"That's what scares me. They must be nearby if they decided to attack this village over all the others in the region."

Emmalia chuckled. "You severely overestimate them, my love. Did you notice how they were dressed so that all their skin was completely covered, short of their faces? They can't stand sunlight like I can, it weakens them considerably, and causes them pain. Wooden stakes and a silver dagger, they're dead. My bet, they're severely outnumbered, even by this village."

"Are you sure?" Callum asked. "Well in that case, could we just burn off their clothes and they'll die from the sunlight? Fire would be effective right?"

Callum contemplated this. "Either way, we need to find a way to beat them. They're causing too much harm to those around us."

"I'm glad. Thank you Emmalia." Callum said, giving her a gentle kiss on her head. "Should we check around the village?"

Callum nodded and did as he was told, going around the perimeter of the village with her to make sure the city was safe.

Nearing their inn on their return, Emmalia let down her guard a bit. Perhaps those vampires really did mean no harm. As she was thinking this, she didn't notice the figures lurking in the shadows. Almost quicker than she could think, six vampires were upon her and Callum. Four grabbed her, and the other two grabbed Callum.

Emmalia managed to get in a few slices with her weaponry, leaving one of them dead, but not before a gag was shoved into her mouth and her hands were bound. Because of what Ander had done to her, this put her into a frenzy, but it didn't last long. One blow to her head, and she was out cold, not fighting anymore, while they ran off into the forest at inhuman speeds with her. All of this happened in the span of five seconds.

It took Callum a moment to process what had happened - they had left even before he completely understood what had just went on. When he realized they had taken Emmalia, he quickly drew his sword and went in the direction they took Emmalia in. "Stop!" He yelled, knowing he couldn't hope to match their speed. They had Emmalia though, and he'd stop at nothing to get her back.

At some point about three minutes into their escape, Em woke up, though she was groggy and had a concussion. The moment she recognized her situation, she played dead, until she got a chance to get in a good attack at one of her captor's throats. It was a lethal wound, and he fell, so the other men holding her dropped her. She took a moment to recover before scrambling to her feet, only to have her arms grabbed again. She growled and thrashed around more, while two vampires discussed if they should let her walk or continue to carry her. The decision was made that she was too dangerous to let walk, so she was again grabbed up and carried.

Callum marched through the woods at a steady pace, keeping Emmalia on his mind as he kept going. He wasn't sure if he was going in the right direction, but didn't have anything better to go off of. Eventually as he ran, he came across the corpse of the man Emmalia must have killed earlier - he ran even faster now, knowing he was on the right path.

The trek was very, very long, even for the vampires, who eventually met up with more of their clan. Emmalia had been in and out of consciousness, until she finally passed out. When she woke up, she found herself lying on a four-poster bed in a private room with a crackling fireplace. It looked like one of the guest rooms in her parent's castle, it was so formal and fancy. There were no windows, though, and the door was locked. She paced around, looking from the writing desk to the soft leather chair in the corner, to the shelf full of books. As nice as this room was, it was sinister merely because she didn't want to be there. Also, her raging headache didn't help her mood. She just wanted to get back to her husband, who she was sure was worried sick. Evidently, though, they still treated her as nobility, so she decided to try knocking on the door loudly. Mere moments after she knocked, a young woman answered the door and hurried in, shutting it behind her before Em could push her way out.

"Pardon, m'Lady, I wanted to wait for you to wake on your own," the girl said.

"Who are you? And why am I here?" Em asked rather calmly.

"I'm Magdalene, your handmaiden, and a healer. You're here because my Lord wanted you here," she explained.

Em paused, then said, "You're human. Why are you in a castle - I assume this is a castle - crawling with vampires?"

"Vampires cannot be healers, M'Lady. I am happy to heal them."

Hearing that she was happy to heal vampires was Em's first tip-off that something was very awry. "Where is my husband?"

"Last our scouts reported, Lord Cross is stumbling about in the dark somewhere quite a ways away. They're making numerous false trails, though it's getting too dark for him to see so I don't think there's a point, personally."

Callum had searched well into the night, even after it had gotten too dark for him to see. He frantically made his way through the woods, getting lost and turned around multiple times - He would never have stopped looking if he felt he could do it. Callum had completely lost the trail though, and eventually went back to the village to search for more answers. Someone had to have seen where they went off to.

Emmalia's head was healed by Magdalene, and she listened to the girl speak about how lucky she was to have been taken in by the vampires. Apparently the vampire apothecaries are quite good, and had helped her when she had had a sickness she couldn't heal. "They are absolutely brilliant men and women, so worthy of the title vampire."

Em quietly said, "You do know that vampirism has no affect on intelligence, correct? It is also not a title but a label - a species."

Magdalene shook her head. "No, no, those whose bodies and minds can accept the Gift are worthy. I am nearly certain I could not handle it, and would perish. So I am happy to serve, since I cannot be among them any other way."

Emmalia grunted. She didn't want to mock the girl who could potentially be an ally, not yet. "What of me, then? I am noble by blood, breeding, raising, and marriage. Also a dark huntress, and a vampiress. I sustain myself on animal blood, with few exceptions. What does this make me to you?"

"Oh, nothing less than the highest of nobility, M'Lady, but you still insist on living among the humans, and acting as one, so you cannot have a true place here, not yet. You do not even understand your own magnificence yet." Magdalene said. "You aren't a normal vampire, either, something is different about you. You are much harder to heal."

"I took a healing potion with some... Side effects." Emmalia looked away toward the wall and started pondering how to escape.

Callum seemed to have asked the entire village for help - he made sure he knew which direction to go in, since he found the original path again, and made sure he kept his silver weapon on him. He began his trek again, hoping to catch up to Emmalia and the vampires that took her before he was too late.
