  Hotaru, by any means, is a complex character. She can initially come off as a little confusing, since some of her traits are contradicting one another. For example, Hotaru may seem somewhat aloof and reserved at a first glance, but also holds a childish spark regarding the smallest of things — excited by the prospect of celebrating festivities or visiting places such as amusement parks and arcades. She’s also partial to anything ‘cute’, particularly puppies. All of this stems from a stifled childhood that was stolen away much too early.
  
  
  Sometimes referred to as having a Jekyll and Hyde-like demeanour; though she isn’t always entirely aware of this. Whilst she’s academically intelligent and knowledgeable of several topics in a literal sense, Hotaru could be described as socially naive. She isn’t always the greatest at picking up social cues and often misunderstands the difference between a joke and someone being serious. However, if someone can look past her flaws, they will find a deeply kind-hearted and loyal soul. Because of her lack of social awareness at times, Hotaru isn’t the best at thinking about the boundaries of others and is very often ‘touchy’, or physically affectionate, without thinking.

  Hotaru actually descends from a long line of jujutsu sorcerers, though she has been attending a ‘mundane’ school her whole life. The Itō family are known for their weapon skills & particular cursed technique known as ‘kage no yōkai’ — which translates to ‘yokai of shadow’ , or ‘ghost of shadow’. This technique allows the user to summon yōkai by focusing cursed energy from their katana. These yōkai are similar to shikigami and able to aid in battle.
  
  However, Hotaru’s parents were sorcerers who turned rogue when she was just a kid. Now that they are both recently affiliated with Suguru Geto, Hotaru has not seen either of her parents for around three years - experiencing a brief encounter with the man herself [explained under the relationships section below.]
  
  After her parents turned rogue when she was just eight years old, they both became gradually more and more cold & distant toward their only child. Frustrated with what they referred to as Hotaru’s ‘boring’ inherited cursed technique, the two began performing experiments on her involving curses and cursed energy. These said experiments left Hotaru both physically and emotionally damaged — obtaining a large scar across the left side of her face. These events also ended up embedding a curse within Hotaru, that she has been aware of since but has yet to ‘fully awaken’.
  
  Once awakened, the curse is able to communicate clearly, possessing their host’s entire being and turning them into a violent, blood-thirsty shell of the person they once were. It arrives in the form of a dark and distorted feminine human-like figure, that shrouds over its host whilst hissing the most unspeakable and darkest of thoughts in an attempt to shake their sanity. Standing at eight feet tall, its appearance is akin to that of the yuki onna yokai.
  
  Despite the turmoil and trauma she has faced, Hotaru remains a good person at heart. She desires to help others who cannot help themselves — having lived and trained under the guidance of her uncle since the disappearance of her parents, though still currently attends a regular school to finish her studies since she had so little time left before she graduated there.

  Hotaru’s first and only encounter with Suguru Geto as of yet left a deep impression on her. Appearing in front of her in an alley whilst walking home from school one day, Geto proceeded to tell her that he knew her parents and was aware of the curse they had inflicted upon her. He then explained he could help her use this for the ‘greater good’ — to create a new world without the weight of humans to destroy it. Initially, she was left feeling conflicted and emotional, and even almost considered his offer, though the sudden rush of emotions had her fleeing in panic…with Geto murmuring an ominous “I’ll see you again soon, Hotaru.” To his day, Hotaru still feels troubled by this encounter, and has a guilty sense of curiosity surrounding the man.
