Kaiden had never been so nervous and frankly, scared in his life. He heard Theo's muttered words and nodded. "Yeah, and Alex's magic aim." Kai whispered back as he stepped back with Theo. He had his rifle out as a few runners ran up the stairs. Josh looked sharply at Soren, hearing his words and knew what he was going to say. He couldn't save everyone last time, but he was not going to let his sons and his best friend get killed because of this. "We need to get something sturdier to seal it. But what? Everything we would've once used is weakened from age." Josh said as he shot at a clicker running towards him.

Luke smiled, nodding his head at that. "You're welcome!" He said as he saw him run a hand on the back of his neck. He was about to say something else but then they were in the lab. It was practically back to normal and he looked at Hayden, smiling back. "You're welcome Uncle. I was happy to help." He said as he turned to look at Ravi, smiling at him brightly. He wondered if he'd be working on the powder again or not.

Theo smiled like this wasn’t happening, even though it was, and also he was actively not stepping on that dead guy. And also now swinging his rifle at another runner. He was hesitant to shoot in case something else other than a bloater was there and had not heard the shot yet. “Sure would like to not be down here. How do we block these doors?” Soren didn’t have the answer Theo’s or Josh’s question. He didn’t have the answer. After twenty years, he was living off of hope. He was desperately hoping that this was not going to happen, and instead of preparing for it, he ignored it. “Doesn’t matter if that bloater is almost up here. There is no way to stop it now. They can break through whatever we put up.” Where was that hope now?

Hayden patted several of the guys on their shoulders and ran a comforting hand over Ravi’s back. “Anything else you boys need from me?” There was a chorus of ‘no’s and ‘thank you’s. Ravi wasn’t sure what to do. He took a step backwards and away from Luke. Not because he really wanted to. Just because he thought he probably should. “Back to my real job probably. Am I sorting today? Rodney’s still on issuing the guns?” Another guy called back, “Mm hmm. We have a handful of jammed ones. You’re the best at that. Can you deal with it? Rodney’s got them store behind him in a box, I think. Baris, are you doing inventory.” “Yep.” “Cool. So I’m on inspection.” Ravi nodded and took another step back. He gave Luke a weak smile, one hand firmly in his pocket now. “I, uh, gotta go.” Hayden moved to Luke’s side. “I think I am done here for today.”

Kaiden looked around and took off, jumping over a few dead bodies. He grabbed a couple bottles, and pulled some rags out. He'd seen Ezekiel make them. "Guys! Can we knock him down those stairs, kill him with these molotovs and his body could be the block?" Kaiden asked as he swung his rifle into an oncoming runner as he made his way back. Josh looked at Soren, then at Kai. "That's actually.. not a bad idea. Soren?"

Luke stood to the side as he looked at the men, and then saw that weak smile from Ravi. He looked at Hayden and then back at Ravi again. "Um. Right. I guess.. I'll head out too." He said, before swallowing his words and bit his lip. "Unless.. if I promise to stay out of the way, maybe.. could I observe you Ravi?" He asked, doubting that it would be okay, but he kind of spoke before he thought about his question.

Could they break through a bloater’s body? That seemed unlikely. For Theo, it sounded like the best plan. “Yeah, molotovs for the win! Go Eze-“ He cut off that name real fast. “Owen! Owen and his Firefly buddies!” Who cared about being quiet if they were already coming. He hoped that was enough to not be super suspicious. It was at least for Soren who was only partially there anyway. He looked from Kaiden and then to Josh. “Let’s do it. Theo. You are allowed to make the pipe bomb now.” He shot down a runner and a clicker before he made sure that his own rife was loaded and ready. Theo was more than a little excited. Explosives and alcohol made the best pipe bombs. Good thing he already knew how to make those too.

The guy giving all the orders walked around them. “If I find a problem, I’ll bring it straight to you?” Ravi nodded. “Aye aye, Captain.” The man rolled his eyes and walked off. Ravi turned his attention back to Luke, and like he had been the entire day, he was a little shocked by the suggestion. His head tilted just a little like a dog trying to figure out what his master told him. “You want to… observe me?” Hayden, who had not quite been expecting this kind of outcome from taking his nephew with him this morning, made some quick observations of his own, and he liked the odds. “I don’t see why that would be a problem.” And who was going to argue with Hayden? “How do you feel about company, Ravi?” Ravi had no idea how he felt about company. He felt weirdly put on the spot here like there was only one correct answer to this highly specific mathematical equation, everything would explode. Again. He didn’t really mind. He was pretty sure he could do the work with Luke there. It was still weird. Probably. So he shrugged. “Mm yeah okay. Sure. It’s not that exciting, but if you wanna come, I guess that’s cool. I don’t think anyone else would care as long as we get it done.”

Kaiden looked at Theo sharply as he heard the start of Ezekiel's name and let out a soft breath at the change into Owens. Both Josh and Kai waited as Soren looked between them and then a grin on Kai's face. "Yes! Let's explode this guy and block the door completely!" Kaiden said as he looked at Theo as he adjusted his rifle. The roar of the bloater echoed from the stairs and he looked at Josh who was ready too. "Whenever you're ready, let's do this."

Luke looked at Ravi as he heard his question and nodded. He looked over at his uncle and was surprised as well at the comment and then the question. He hadn't meant to put the other man on the spot but he was really interested in seeing him work. If Luke had been born in the normal world, he probably would've been a scientist. But Luke became a patrolman, like his uncles, like his cousins. But many of the books he read were science books, especially chemical compositions. He just never thought that being a scientist was really possible, they had so many already, so he turned to patrol. Luke looked at Ravi and smiled, nodding his head. "I'd like to come." Luke agreed, smiling softly.

This was going to be so difficult to hide. That was what Theo realized as he had to cover for himself and the name. Unless there were bloaters all the time. In which case, this was fine. He quickly made one and was working on another when Soren put out his hand. Theo tossed him the first bomb. “Happy ‘splosions,” Theo chimed as Soren popped out into the stairwell and threw the bomb down. It, of course, exploded. The roars of an angry bloater swallowed the air. “Let’s go Kai. You’re up.” And he started opening fire with the rifle.

“Then that settles it.” Hayden clapped his hand on Luke’s shoulder as he began to turn. “I think you’ll enjoy it in here. Sometimes, I stay back here for a while too. It’s refreshing to have a different perspective every now and then.” He waved to Ravi, who weakly waved back, and was gone. It was just him and Luke. And all the other guys back there. This was definitely not how he saw this morning going. “Come on. We have to go get the box from Rodney. Don’t know where we’ll go to work on it…” Ravi would often just sit right there on the floor and fix things. Maybe one of the desks since no one was in the lab today? That was because no one was crazy enough to want to be in there like Ravi. He headed through the back areas until they were behind the counter. “Rod. Where’s- oh, are these for me?” In an open bin was a handful of guns of various types.

Kaiden knew this would hard to hide and he was thankful that Theo had caught himself. He watched as Theo made a bomb and then the first one exploded as Kai heard Soren. "Got it!" He said as he quickly made a molotov and threw it down the stairs. Another roar echoed up as he looked at Theo. "Got another bomb ready brother?" Kai asked as Josh stood beside Soren, firing at infected that ran up the stairs.

Luke smiled at Hayden as he felt the hand clap on his shoulder. "I think I'll like it here too." Luke said, looking at Ravi as Hayden left. He nodded, and walked with him as they headed to get the box from Rodney. "I'm fine wherever you want to work. I'm pretty flexible." Luke said as he followed him out to behind the counter. He looked at the bin of guns and then at Rodney and Ravi. "Would you like a hand carrying that to the lab?" He asked curiously, looking at Ravi.

“I’m working in it.” Theo was moving as fast as he could to get the next bomb. “Got it! Got it!” He ran over to the stairs and chucked it down at the incoming bloater. He moved out of the way so that Soren could take his place back to continue firing at it and also all the runners that came up with it. From behind, something grabbed Theo, and he tried to wiggle free. The clicking sound only made him more afraid.

“So that you can laugh at my weakling muscles?” Ravi asked with a smile. He wasn’t exactly a weakling. Mechanics and the like usually weren’t. He was nowhere near as strong as some of the guys out here though. The ones who went on patrol and were used to fighting were way stronger. Many of the women could knock him down just by looking at him. “Wanna grab the other side of the bin for me?” This wasn’t super heavy, but why not share? If he had an assistant, he should use him, right? That and he kinda liked the idea of sharing for once.

Kai nodded as he heard the explosion from the bomb a moment after it was tossed down. Josh heard the clicking sounds and looked back to see a clicker grabbing him. "I don't think so." Josh growled softly as he twisted on his foot. He grabbed the back of the clicker and ripped him off of Theo, slammed him to the floor and shot the clicker. "Okay, we're done. Kai one more molotov should do it!" Josh called and Kai nodded, making one and flinging it down. The bloater's dying roar and explosion after echoed around. Then it was quiet.

Luke blinked a little bit as he heard that and grinned, chuckling softly. "No. So I can be a gentleman sunshine." He said with a wink as he smiled. Luke heard the question and nodded, grabbing the other side of the bin. "I've got it." He replied, lifting it up with one hand. "Alright, lead the way Sunshine." He said, looking at Ravi with chocolate brown eyes as he smiled at him.

Theo stumbled forward as soon as the clicker was off his back. Thank the world for fabulous fathers. He scrambled to catch his balance and finally was standing again, aiming his rifle around him. Scanning for anything left. There wasn’t anything. It was silent. For a while. Soren broke the silence as he exhaled a shaky breath. “Okay.” They did it. It was done. Sealed again. There was something satisfying about using one of their own to block them from getting out any more than they already had. “Okay.” He turned around to immediately be rushed by Theo who was grabbing everyone for a hug. “Nothing can stop us,” he beamed.

Sunshine. “Does that make you Roses?” It was a bit of a bizarre question that was wildly unprompted. It did not take long for them to take the bin back to the lab. They could set this down probably beside the desk and then pull each one up for him to inspect. “If I’m Sunshine then? Or maybe Rainbows? I… I actually don’t know the quote that well.” He vaguely remembered his mom saying something like this and a bunch of the older people from before the outbreak would say that too in reference to good things. Or bad things that weren’t so good? He was not a hundred percent certain.

Josh heard the silence around them and he let out a long sigh as he looked around. "Done. Again." He said with a relieved smile on his face. Kai laughed as he was pulled into a group hug a moment later. "Unstoppable, that's exactly what we are when we work together!" Kai said as he chuckled. "Okay guys, we should head back before the rest of our team wonders where we are."

Luke looked at Ravi and chuckled as he heard that. "I don't know if it's Roses or Rainbows. But I know Mom usually says 'Sunshine and Rainbows.' so maybe Rainbows?" He asked as they headed into the lab and set the bin next to the desk. "That's okay. Some of these old world sayings are kind of weird anyway." Luke added as he snagged a spare chair. "Okay, so should I just hand you a gun and you do your magic?"

“We are the actual coolest team ever. Who needs other people?” Theo bounced away and looked down the stairs. “Yeah, but you’re right. They’re gonna be like ‘whoa, how did we lose four people in our group?’ And we’re gonna be like ‘no sweat, we’re just family bonding over here by saving the whole entire world.’ Alright maybe not that much but still.” He threw his arms around Josh first and then Kai and then Soren. “Agh!” He too a deep breath. “Okay. I’m good now. We can go.” Soren chuckled and nodded. “I would very much like to go now.”

Ravi had a chair at this desk, and he was going to start sitting, but he doubted that he would stay sitting. Was this magic? Not really. Did it look like magic if this wasn’t someone’s first language like it was his. It was definitely his native tongue. He couldn’t even remember roses and rainbows. But he knew these. He patted the desk. “Yep, that’s exactly how this is gonna go. So, what’s first, Rainbows?” He peered over at the bin. “Did they leave me any clue what was wrong with these guys or are we only working with ‘jammed’?”

Josh watched as Theo bounced away and shook his head with a small grin on his face. "Yes, of course. Bonding." Josh said as he was then hugged by Theo. Kai laughed as Theo hugged him next and then both Josh and Kai nodding, looking at them. "Let's go." Josh said, turning and leading the way to the stairs. "Kai, Theo. You two go up first. Just in case." Josh said as Kai nodded and slipped in front of Josh.

Luke looked at him and smiled at the nickname. "Oh good. See? I'm learning already Sunshine." He said as he looked into the bin. "Well, this one has a note on it that says the trigger was jamming when they tried to fire it." Luke said, handing a shotgun to Ravi. "I'm not sure if anything else is jammed but, that's the only note on this one." Luke added as he shifted to look at Ravi.

Theo happily bounded in front of the other two, Soren taking up the rear as he looked back down just to make sure everything was good. Everything was sealed again. He needed to go home and tell Jacob literally everything. That was the only way he was going to be able to make it through the rest of the day without any other issues. That was how they made sure that they never had pent up problems. Theo swiveled around so that he was going up the stairs backwards. “We could always save you for once, you know.” Soren grinned. “You did. Kai. That was a very good plan.”

Ravi took the shotgun from him. “Thank you, kind assistant.” He tossed the note aside and looked at the weapon. “Probably a failure to feed then.” He dropped the magazine on the table and opened it up so that he could look inside the chamber. He blew on it and shook his head. “Yeah, for sure that’s what it is. Probably means whoever used it last wasn’t holding it right.” He started to work clearing out the chamber, and while he was at it, cleaning everything else out too. “If this ever happens to you while you’re out there and you don’t have another weapon, drop the mag and empty the chamber. It should be good enough to reset quickly and then use again.” He realized that this was easier said than done when he was never the one being attacked out there. “Uh, I mean, if you can.”

Kai laughed as he followed Theo back up the stairs as he looked back at the other two. Josh was going to tell Hayden what happened, knowing what happened when he didn't speak about this stuff before. He just had to hope that Hayden listened to him, especially since Kai was down there too. Kai heard Soren and flushed a little red. "Thanks. It seemed like a good idea. And it should hold better." Kai said softly as Josh smiled. "Yes, good job son."

Luke smiled and nodded. "You're welcome." He said as he rested an elbow on the table and watched, fascinated. He listened to him and watched as he cleaned out the chamber then everything else. He tilted his head slightly as he nodded. Drop the mag and empty the chamber. Got it. "That's good to know, thank you. I'll keep that in mind and share with Kai. I know his shotgun jammed a month ago. And sometimes we can, it depends on who we're being attacked by."

Theo was up those stairs in record time. He had all the energy in the world plus the adrenaline of their imminent death still coursing through him. He really didn’t want to go down there anymore. Possibly never again. That was not even those lower levels of the basement area. He did not want to know how that looked. Absolutely not. “What do you guys think about posting a sign on the door to these stairs that says something like ‘DO NOT ENTER EVER AGAIN’? Think people would listen to that?”

Ravi grinned as he finished cleaning the gun. “They’re all the same. The shotguns, the rifles, the pistols. I mean, I know they aren’t. They have different ranges and bullets and whatever, but they’re the same when it comes to this.” He shifted so now his body was diagonal on the chair so that he was sort of facing Luke. “They all jam the same way. Or at least they all have common reasons that they jam. So if any of them do that, in theory, doing those two things could help you out.” He slid the gun to the other side of the desk. “Hit me with you next one.”

Josh and Kai both laughed as they watched Theo bound up the stairs and they were a couple steps behind him. Kaiden didn't want to go back down there, and that was just the basement. He stepped out into the center of the hospital and the door swung shut as they finally made it back. "That's a good idea. Maybe one of those do not disturb signs or do not enter ones." Josh suggested, looking at Soren with a grin. "Steal a sign from one of the streets."

Luke looked at Ravi, listening to him with wide eyes as he took that information in. "I have to admit, they taught me how to use the guns and do a basic clean, but that was it. I didn't realize they all tend to jam the same way." He admitted as he nodded his head. "I'll share that information." He said with a smile before he nodded again and turned, grabbing a rifle and set it on the table. "No note on this one, so probably just jammed?"

Soren thought that was a fabulous idea. “The more official it looks, the more likely that our people are to listen.” Theo laughed as he ran through the center. The rest of the group was starting to amass. He finger gunned several and playfully punched others. Soren sighed. “Really, though, I don’t want anyone else going down there. If that was how it was as high up as we saw, I don’t want to know how it is any lower than that.”

Ravi shook his head. “You’d think they would tell you more if these things are going to be your lifeline. Don’t worry. I can be it for you.” He took the rifle and started the same inspection. “And they have the same types of jams. But there are other ones. Like… this one isn’t the feed problem. This one is an ejection problem.” He turned the firearm, and himself, so that he was facing Luke a little better. “This is the exit of the chamber, but they get stuck here sometimes. Also usually a problem with firing technique.” He began a similar process and stopped. “I was disparaging someone too soon. Wait. This is a faulty ejector in general.” He sighed. “Who made this?” He started pulling the rifle completely apart. “Ejector or plunger? Ejector.” He placed the pieces down and moved from the chair to run to the shelves behind them. “Give me a moment, I’ve got parts back here.”

Josh looked at Soren and nodded as he heard his words. "So on the next patrol in the streets, we'll search for one of those signs and bring it back." Josh said, agreeing that he did not want anyone else going down there. "We ran into a bloater at the basement level, I don't want to know about the lower levels." He added. Kai was right behind Theo, laughing as he looked at the others. "Alright, I think this patrol is over. Who's ready to head back?"

Luke chuckled before he shrugged his shoulders. "You'd think that." He said before he smiled wide. "Sunshine and my lifeline? How did I get so lucky?" He asked as he watched him inspect the rifle. He tilted his head as he listened, watching intently as Ravi showed him the firearm as he watched him inspect it. Oh, it was faulty. He shifted closer, brown eyes taking in the magic that he was watching. "Okay." He said, watching him go to the shelves behind them. Luke was already learning more about their weapons and maybe, that could be a lot more helpful during patrols.

Theo was so excited and tired all at once. He hadn’t felt like this since before they were grounded. Of course, they’d gone through some heavy stuff then too. Soren could not agree more with that. He called everyone back, and in no time they had the full team together in the center of this hospital. The team was asking what happened, and Theo of course was obliging by telling the most dramatic reenactment of it all. As was his job in life.

Ravi rummaged through one bin. Another. Another. He muttered to himself the entire time and occasionally muttered out loud and probably for Luke about how he was going to find this. “Ah ha! Got it! This isn’t at all where I put them last.” In a significantly louder voice he announced, “I’m organizing tomorrow! I’ll do inventory too!” From afar, another voice responded, “You’re off tomorrow.” Ravi shrugged and then nodded and answered, “Then I’m doing it when I come back.” There was a grunt of affirmation and another something that was like “thank god,” from somewhere. Ravi finally sat back down, now entirely facing Luke. “Where were we? Oh right. I was putting this gun back together with this new and hopefully functional part.”

Kaiden and Josh stood beside each other as they got the whole team together in the center of the hospital. Josh merely chuckled and shook his head as Theo dramatically reenacted the basement that they’d just made it out of. Kaiden shook his head although he did thrown in a few comments himself as well. "Alright everyone, let's head back to the truck."

Luke heard Ravi muttering to himself and chuckled when he could hear the louder mutters. He heard him say that he found it and then a smile crossed his face when he heard that he was off tomorrow. Luke needed to talk to his uncle about getting tomorrow off. He knew that while Josh wasn't in charge, he often helped organize the patrols. He looked at Ravi and smiled, nodding. "Yes, using that magic of yours to put that gun back together with the new part."

The men seemed ready to head on back. Theo led the way, because no one was as chaotically fast as he was. He could beat Kai in a race but only in short distances. He had so much energy that he could burst. If it was any longer though, he would burn out and definitely lose. He was the first back to the truck and the first in the back. Soren was not too far behind, grabbing the driver’s spot and turning it on. “Anyone have anything interesting to share? Other than Theo?” Theo lowered his already raised hand.

Ravi held the new piece in his hand and lifted it up. “Looks good, I think. When I do inventory tomor-“ He paused and shook his head, “the day after tomorrow, I think I’ll probably do the full thing. Inventory and parts inspection. Make sure everything is good.” He swiveled around to the desk and put the rifle back together. He tested some pieces and shrugged. “Should work now.” He stared off into space as he fiddled with some parts. “Yep yep yep, that’s good.” He slid it to the side and grinned at Luke. “Alright, Rainbows, what else you got for me?”

Kaiden followed Theo, though not as fast. His mind was whirling between seeing Ezekiel again, barely, to the meeting a few days from now, to what they just endured in the basement. He was quiet as he got into the truck as Josh slipped into the passengers seat up front with Soren. The men looked at each other and a couple shook their heads. The hospital was pretty bare on the top floors where they were.

Luke tilted his head as he smiled at Ravi, hearing him. "So what do you do with the faulty parts? Or parts that don't work?" He asked curiously as he watched him put the rifle back together. "Should I test these out for you in the shooting range?" Luke suggested, as he saw Ravi grin at him. He grinned back and grabbed another rifle from the bin. "Looks like this one, the bullet jammed in the chamber according to the note." Luke said handing it to him.

Since no one had anything to say about the patrol, no one was shocked by Theo’s decision to fill the silence with constant chatter about whatever. He was getting out all the things he didn’t get to say while they were grounded. This was not the group that was used to him, so they were in for a wild time until they got used to this. Soren drove them back pretty quietly, wanting this patrol to be over sooner rather than later. He was so definitely ready to get home to Jacob. Yes, Jacob would likely still be working, but that was fine. Soren hung out in the medical tents with him until the end of the day. That never bothered him.

“Do you want the official answer or the actual answer?” Ravi grabbed the next rifle and started his inspection. “The answer officially is that they get scrapped. It’s dangerous to use things that need fixes, because what if the fix doesn’t work?” They couldn’t afford a blowout or something worse. “But if we know we can fix it, we do. No reason to waste a part. And if we can’t fix it up to the code that it would need to be at, then we toss it.” He pulled over a toolbox and grabbed the lubrication and a rag. “But to be honest, I don’t even do that. Sometimes, I know that part is perfect for something else, and I can fix it. So I take it.” He ran it through the other side of the chamber, holding the rifle so that the lubrication could drip down. While he waited he turned his attention to Luke. “It’s dangerous to try these out. Normally I test them so it’s just me at risk.”

Josh and Kai were both not surprised by Theo filling in the silence. And Josh chuckled, glancing at Soren. “Poor guys will learn eventually how Theo is.” He said with a shake of his head as the silence fell over them as they got to the stadium. Kai looked out over the area, wondering, thinking. He wanted to see his dad, maybe spend time with both of them. After seeing Josh down like that, it had spooked him more than any other patrol they’d been on. In normal patrols, Josh didn’t go down like that. He saw the stadium come into view and was anxious to get inside even though they just got out.

Luke nodded as he listened. Well that would make sense, why have a part that could jeopardize everyone’s lives? And on the same note, if it’s fixable, then why waste it? “That makes sense.” He said, nodding his head. “Oh look at you. Um. You’re a real macgyver.
