Fate/Crossed Souls

“Charmed. My apologies for not meeting you sooner, I’ve been rather busy these last few days as you can imagine. I hope that our relationship going forward is a cordial one regardless of what transpires this week.”

A good, neutral response - though given your shared animosity with the Mage’s Association, a good relationship with the church’s overseer was something you were anticipating. In all likelihood, this man probably had some sort of combat history. They wouldn’t send an ordinary clergyman to watch over this competition.

He smiles - though that grin he bears seems practiced. His eyes open just a crack and you catch a glimpse of the hidden emerald orbs that seem to stare into your very being. For a second, you almost seem apprehensive - that split second of eye contact makes it clear that he’s more interested in you than the Heroic Spirit accompanying you.

“I hope that this experience proves to an enlightening one, Miss Twain. It is rather comforting to see two Masters seated at the same table and eating like comrades. I suppose I should get going, there are other duties I must attend to besides my responsibilities as an overseer. I wish the best for you.”

You nod mechanically, only now realizing that he had managed to finish his meal while you were busy worrying about him. Berserker pats his stomach and lets out a belch as he leans forward. Richelieu has already disappeared from view and your eyes catch sight of a throng of high-school girls swarming over something at the back of the restaurant.

“Xiahou, you don’t happen to know anything about this Richelieu aside from his current position do you?”

“Nope, not a thing, sorry. You sort of got that same suspicion too huh? Eh, he’s probably an Executor or something - I remember that there was a Subcategory where the overseer turned out to be one of them. Apparently they ended that one prematurely by destroying their grail.”

“Tch, forget about that guy. What about the Master who tried barging into our room this morning?”

“O-Oh, right. B-Based on their erm, methods, it seems like the M-Master who tried to ambush you this morning was Der Freischütz. A-A rather infamous Enforcer who has been likened to the Magus Killer. Y-You know, that Freelancer who operated back in the 90s…”

The title does ring a bell, though it takes a you a few moments to recall what only amounts to vague information. The magus in question has become somewhat of a boogeyman for magi - stories have been told of their enchanted bullets striking down their target if those dire wolves don’t tear them apart first. It’s even been rumored that they also operate as a hitman when they aren’t hunting down Clock Tower’s malcontents.

“...Well Twain. It’s either we get busy killing or get busy dying. With any luck, I might even get some payback on that bastard from last night.”

Berserker flashes a shark-like grin as he cracks his knuckles and stands up. The Freeshooter will certainly be a challenging opponent - especially as they’ve already pinpointed your base of operations. Paranoia starts to kick in when you realize that this upscale WcDonald’s restaurant is practically made out of glass. The Chinese magus stands up as well and rolls a shoulder.

“My investigation won’t go anywhere if you die Miss Twain. Here’s my number - just give me a call and I’ll swing by to help you out.”

Excellent, an ally at your beck and call now. Given how she brutalized the Enforcer’s dogs, she could prove useful in an upcoming skirmish. That thought leads to another - perhaps it’s time that you summon the Thunderbird once more and regain some more of your previous capabilities. It also dawns on you that talking to Berserker may also help the two of you fight better.

All of those thoughts are abruptly stopped when a certain orange-haired young man pushes through the throng of girls near the back of the restaurant as you three are about to head downstairs.  He’s… reasonably attractive, though you don’t really understand why he had so many girls surrounding him the two times you did catch a glimpse of him.

“Gah, I don’t even know why I keep getting sent out to do this sort of thing. It’s so hard to breathe when they’re all grabby like that…”

You resist the urge to roll your eyes, but your other two companions are just exasperated. The orange-haired youth looks back at the crowd that’s already dispersing. And for some reason, he turns to you and strikes a rather flamboyant pose - his body contorts into a shape that you thought you’d only be able to see in some Japanese manga about supernatural battles. You scratch your Command Seals as he remains frozen in place with his brilliant golden eyes staring at you.

“...”

“...”

“...Weird. I guess I’ll just skip to the end then. Here. If you don’t show up, expect a repeat of this morning.”

Berserker’s hand moves to his side, but you use your lightning-enhanced speed to grab his wrist before he can materialize his blade. It’s more than likely that this high-school student is a Servant. He smirks at the mad warrior before casually passing you a slip of paper.

“What a beast of a Servant - to think you’d swing that sword around with all these innocent people around. You’re a disgrace to my brother’s memory - it’ll be a service to the world to wipe you out.”

You feel Berserker tensing up and you move to pull him back. What’s more worrying is the trails of black vapors that are beginning to surround your Servant - a cursory glance at his status indicates that his Mad Enhancement’s rank is starting to fluctuate. The orange-haired Servant gazes at you once more before the sight of his face causes a few nearby women to suddenly rush over and mob him.

The note you received only has a location and a time scrawled on it. 10:00 PM, Central Plaza Downtown. Given the fact that it’s surrounded on all sides by high-rises it’s also obviously the most advantageous spot for the Enforcer to fight you. Though, having to relocate and the fact that they already know both you and your Servant’s faces make it clear that there’s no escape if you try to avoid this confrontation.

“I’m going to headback to my safehouse - you know how to reach me. I guess I can try and dig up some more information on Saber while you do your thing.”

She winks at your Servant before parting ways with you at the entrance of the restaurant. It's almost sort of irritating, especially given Berserker's own lack of a response. For a Magus, she seems rather simple - though you can’t really find yourself suspecting her of any subterfuge. Kun just seems too simple and you don’t have any reason to really doubt her apparent motives.

Berserker still seems somewhat annoyed, but his Mad Enhancement has momentarily dropped back down to its regular rank. It then dawns on you - that Servant specifically mentioned his brother in reference to Berserker. It’s not a lot to go on, but you might be able to kill two birds with one stone if you follow this lead.

Prepare for the Duel

 1. Find a safe spot to perform the ritual and call the Thunderbird. Having some offense of your own will help.

 2. Talk to Berserker and attempt to learn more about him. You may be able to learn that Servant’s True Name that way.

 3. [RANDOM ENCOUNTER]

Mystery Box options are always fun. Especially since the quest runner can laugh at you when it blows up in your face because you chose the option.

2. Come on, it can't be just me who is curious about who the hell our servant is B|

We can't be learning about our servant in the middle of a duel, @ViAdvena.

Imma go with 1 because I don't want to be helpless in case some weirdo wanting to kill me pops up and Berserker is unavailable. Want to live. Thanks.

Changing my vote to 2 because it's the second riskiest thing on the list.  Still count my vote for 3 though, if it'll put it over the top.

PLAYING IT SAFE IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING IN THE WORLD.

also the sooner we get that name, the better.

Haha!

#1

I feel Saber is going to reveal Berserker's name through the fight anyway. Why do double work??

It’s been a day and you can almost feel your magic circuits crawling under your skin. It seems like you’re due for another visit from the Nature Spirit. Though, as your current base of operations is compromised, it seems that you’ll need to locate another location. Thankfully, you root through your memories and remember that Downtown had quite a few buildings where ley lines ran under. Obviously, heading to the city’s tallest skyscraper is probably too conspicuous so you decide on a parking complex on the far side of the city. It’s out of the way, but you’re certain that it’s a far safer alternative.

“Alright, we’re heading out Berserker. I’m going to call the Thunderbird forth - relying on you solely for protection is far too risky with that Enforcer and their range.”

“Thunderbird? Not too sure about all this magic shit, but don’t you usually pay a price for making a deal with the devil?”

“He’s a Nature Spirit, for one. And our contract did require a sacrifice - two decades worth of hair and a yearly pilgrimage for the rest of my life. We’ll be using the motorcycle - try not to vomit.”

Berserker pales as you utter those words. And for the rest of the ride, he’s caught in a constant struggle not to regurgitate all of those breakfast sandwiches he consumed. You’re slightly conscious of the fact that he’s wrapped his arms around your waist, though you push those thoughts aside. You make a stop at the hotel to grab your catalysts before speeding towards your destination.

The sun is already setting by the time you’ve set up the ritual and partitioned off the third floor of the concrete structure with Bounded Fields. Your Servant is standing by, leaning against a wall with his arms folded. You can feel his gaze on you as you give the immediate area another glance.

A drop of blood touches the circle traced out with bone powder. The white granules are dyed a deep crimson and you can feel the air around you warping. Berserker shields his eyes with his forearm as a brilliant light floods the area. Berserker almost seems amused by the rather dramatic entrance that the Elemental has taken. Clad in his white uniform is the Thunderbird in his preferred form - only once have you seen him in all his glory as the elemental who dominates North America’s skies. You bring a hand to your long hair - it hasn’t grown at all since the day you connected with him.

Clad in Lightning from the Ends of the Earth

“...Do you remember why you forged this contract with me Twain?”

“Of course - I didn’t have the means to achieve my goals back then. You were an avenue of power for me - and a valuable teacher.”

“Spare me the flattery Twain. Still, it is comforting to know that it is you.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“There’s a rather troublesome being who has recently resurfaced - if I were in your position, I would probably be concerned. Through your understanding, you’d know it as a demon - though it has a more proper name.”

“Cryptic as always I see.”

"Adversity builds character, even if you are an accomplished individual you always have room to grow. A word of advice as well - don't rely on that sword lest you wish to make the world your enemy."

Berserker raises an eyebrow when the man addresses him without even opening his eyes. Before you can respond, however, the air slowly distorts once more - it seems that you've run out of time on this call. It couldn't be helped, you only had enough time to grab a handful of materials..The ancient being raises a hand and a bolt of blue flies out from his palm and strikes you directly in the chest. Berserker’s sword is already drawn as soon as he sees this - but stops in his tracks when it becomes clear that you’re unharmed. Energy courses through your veins once more as you regain the ability to channel lightning through body. Your strikes rend foes with the power of storms and you’ve also become slightly faster.

“Jeez, don’t worry me like that… Not that I’m worried about you - I just don’t want my experience to be cut so short. Anyways, we still have some time before that duel right? There’s something I have to talk to you abo-”

With his sword still drawn, he turns his head slightly. You notice it soon afterwards. Standing there, in the middle of third floor, is a figure wrapped in a red cloak and bound in leather armor. Their face is similarly bounded by leather strips and further concealed with the shadow from their hood. And in their hands are two daggers. They’re rather ancient looking with jagged edges and a seemingly dulled finish. But you know better - they’re wielding magical tools of some sort.

Your body immediately shifts into a fighting stance familiar to you. Much as the Tohsaka family learned martial arts in conjunction with Magecraft, you’ve taken to weaving the Thunderbird’s elemental fury with kickboxing. It only takes a few moments to apply Reinforcement to your body.

And then the assailant rushes forward - their unnatural speed is rather surprising. Berserker glances back to you as he prepares to intercept the stranger. You know for sure that this isn’t the Freeshooter’s Servant. That young man was far too flashy for his own good. As Berserker’s blades clash with the hidden daggers you wait for an opportunity to strike. The ringing of metal is all that you can hear as the two combatants fight.

It’s rather surprising that this assailant has managed to even last this long in combat against Berserker - though it’s clear that they have no chance of overpowering him. They’re fighting defensively with each dagger being used to parry the blows from Berserker’s sword. The black knight almost seems rather annoyed by their tenacity. The cloaked figure’s head seems to occasionally turn towards you in-between your Servant’s strikes.

 1. Wait for the right moment to leap into the fray. It seems like it would be a good chance to test out your regained abilities and a little practice never hurt.

 2. Stand back - Berserker has the upper hand after all. You still have 8 years worth of experience with your Magecraft and the possibility of Kun’s intervention.

2. Stand back - Berserker has the upper hand after all. You still have 8 years worth of experience with your Magecraft and the possibility of Kun’s intervention.

“Berserker! Finish it!”

“Don’t have to tell me twice!”

You decide that you might as well let the inevitable happen and take a step back as Berserker presses his attack on the dual-wielding assailant. You take note of the mysterious enemy’s arms starting to waver with each parried blow from the black knight’s blade. Your Servant is grinning, if nothing else you can tell that he really does enjoy combat. He maintains a tight grip on the sword before landing a rather painful looking punch to the assailant’s gut that sends them flying back a few feet.

With that hungry snarl plastered on his face, the mad warrior charges forth to deliver a fatal blow. Though clearly impaired by that gut punch, both you and Berserker notice the assailant’s subtle movements. Berserker’s momentum prevents him from stopping in time however. A black blur rushes past your Servant and lands behind him before falling to a knee. You clench your fists as Berserker remains still.

You were certain that the enemy’s desperate last attack would have been able to take out Berserker’s eye - especially with those daggers that managed to remain intact after his onslaught. Yet, the only visible injury Berserker sports is a thin scratch on his cheek. Were it not for the small trickle of blood bubbling out, you wouldn’t have noticed it.

Berserker seems more confused by this than anything and fails to act as the assailant stands back on their feet. They throw a metal orb to the ground and smoke bellows out at an alarming rate. You rush forward in an attempt to catch him and you actually manage to get a good grip on their cloak with your enhanced speed. However, you catch a glimpse of a silhouette flying out into the distance. You take a look at the scrap of red cloth and pocket it before walking over to Berserker and cupping his face in your hands.

“O-Oi! What do you think you’re doing right n-now?”

“Shhh. I just want to make sure those blades weren’t poisoned - you wouldn’t be useful to me if you were dead.”

Ignoring his blushing face, it seems that it was little more than a shallow cut. Considering the quality of those daggers, it’s a rather disjointed outcome to the clash. For a moment, your gaze meets his - you’ve never really noticed his dull blue eyes. There’s nothing beautiful about them. But they remind you of something. The eyes of your father. Someone who succumbed to despair. It’s rather unsettling and you turn away to check the time on your phone. You catch the slightest hint of a frown on his face as you begin to walk towards your motorcycle.

“We should get going.”

“Yeah…”

You simply can’t understand what’s making Berserker so melancholic - it’s not as if you had offended him this time around. And it certainly wasn’t because of that scratch. That usual bashfulness disappeared in an instant when he stared into your eyes as well. He doesn’t say a word as he settles behind you on the jet-black machine. The ride to Central Plaza is as silent as a corpse.

The motorcycle is parked a fair distance away from the ‘arena’ and you’ve started to walk with Berserker who has now materialized his bloodstained armor. You’re not particularly nervous about this encounter, rather, you go into this with that same calm demeanor as usual. This Enforcer is little more than a speedbump on your path to the Holy Grail. The footsteps behind you stop.

“...Twain.”

“What is it Berserker?”

“Here. It’s… if I lose control. Though, I guess I’d understand if you had to put me down like the dog I am.”

He conjures up a small, simple bottle from thin air. A strange blue liquid that glows ever so slightly swishes around the glass prison. There’s barely any of the fluid left and you make a note to perhaps try and conserve as much of it as possible. You have an eerie suspicion that this might be something important for later.

The two of you stop short of entering the wide-open space surrounded by buildings. In the distance, you can spot a glowing figure and a few silhouettes at their sides and low to the ground. Berserker folds his arms as you take a moment to mentally prepare yourself for your first real taste of combat in this war.

 1. Call Kun. Take the pragmatic approach and build up as much of an advantage as possible. She’s handled the Freeshooter’s familiars before after all.

 2. Enter the arena with just you and Berserker. It’s tactically unsound, but if the Freeshooter actually called you out instead of resorting to more cloak and dagger tactics, you might as well honor it.

1. Call Kun. Take the pragmatic approach and build up as much of an advantage as possible. She’s handled the Freeshooter’s familiars before after all.

1. Call Kun and give yourself as much of an advantage as possible, but tell Kun not to act unless it seems clear that we're losing. There. Compromise.
