Fate/Crossed Souls

Tick.

Your mind races as the pieces begin to fall into place. Perhaps you had already suspected this from the onset, but with his own history - his legend - revealed, you definitely have enough information to hazard a guess.

Tock.

“...Berserker, you’re Ro-”

Tick.

Sway. The whole room sways as you find yourself staring down at the table. Ha. Haha? What was it that you were about to say? You remember feeling slight trepidation when you opened your mouth, but now you only feel a sort of bliss as your Servant stares at you with a raised eyebrow. You’re smiling softly now, but for some reason that only seems to put him on edge.

Tock.

Annoying. It’s so annoying. You scratch at the inscribed mark on your right hand - the Command Seals. It itches, it burns. It’s interfering. You scratch at it harder but the pain doesn’t subside. Oh well. You’ll just have to ignore it. There are more important things on your mind. When you glance around the room, all you notice are the faceless strangers. Nothing of interest. Time to move on.

Tick.

“Berserker. We’re heading out.”

“Twain, there’s definitely something up with you. Let’s just head back and get some re-”

Tock.

“No, we need to get going. Trust me.”

You hear it. That wonderful, repetitive noise. So ordered and reassuring. But, you know better. Its latent purpose. That which moves civilization forward only plunges it further into chaos. Ah~, how lovely. The great end of all. The awakening of that one. The end of the world. A deep blush makes its way onto your face as your heartbeat quickens. You grab Berserker’s hand and rush out the door. You’re deaf to the yelling waitresses as you rush out of the restaurant.

Tick.

Those automatons step out of the crowds and watch you with those camera lense eyes. Their swift and fluid movements belie their mechanical nature. As they move their limbs to point a path, Berserker starts to protest. He yells and curses as your grip tightens and you make your way forward like a man possessed.

Tock.

Eh? That’s strange. You suddenly felt as if there was someone behind you, but it seems that they’ve already vanished. Or perhaps there was never really anything there. Is anything actually genuine? You know that those red characters are. Their alien scripts remain foreign and indecipherable to you, yet you feel a strange kinship with them.

Tick.

How much time has passed? Does it matter? You’ve pushed through crowds with the aid of the automatons and you’ve now passed through the revolving doorway of a certain skyscraper. Royden Robotics, the driving force behind Downtown’s advancements. The woman at the front desk is deathly pale and her long black hair frames her doll-like face perfectly. Berserker only gazes at her with suspicion. What is this? Is that dog getting jealous? How cute.

Tock.

And now you’re in a glass elevator. Your consciousness briefly vanishes but it doesn’t matter. You’re almost there - you’ve chosen to answer the call. Mayhunt’s patchwork cityscape is gorgeous, it’s almost a shame that it’ll be twisted so elegantly. Berserker’s already donned his armor and he tries speaking. But all he does his move his lips - you can’t understand an existence like his. Instead you offer him a soft smile and stroke his cheek. As soon as the elevator’s doors slide open,

Tick.

Whoosh~! You’re off with a running start and instinctively channeling lightning through your muscles. You barely get a good look of the area around you as the red characters force your gaze in the right direction.  Berserker attempts to chase after you, but a number of those metal men step out from hidden compartments in the wall and block his path. It’s a shame, but if he’s going  to act like this he has to stay behind. So close, just a few more steps…

Tock.

And there he is. As Berserker struggles against the unyielding horde of machinery, you close the door behind you and stand perfectly still before him. You don’t know his name, but it’s clear from the desk he stands in front of and the magnificent view from the large glass window behind him that he’s someone important. He’s dressed in a simple white suit and his sharp gaze penetrates through your very being. You meet his eyes. That calculating look reminds you of someone sizing up a chunk of meat at a deli. But at the same time, there's a certain fondness in his glare. Almost like someone reuniting with an old friend.

Royden.jpg

Tick. Tock.

“Interesting. To think that calling out with the [K Equation] would actually yield fruit. Though, you certainly were the last person I’d expect to actually carry that fragment.”

You can’t move your body, it’s gone all rigid. You can feel the strange force that keeps your body together now binding you forcefully. But you don’t mind, nor do you mind when he lifts your hand up and inspects your three Command Seals.

“What an interesting arrangement, I suppose that man planned ahead. A futile attempt though, especially now that you’ve been sewn back together with those formulas. I suppose Berserker will be a useful asset. You’ve performed your duty well, but it seems that I win this time.”

Slowly, he steps back and raises his hand. Red script swirls around his hand and distorts reality. The characters soon arrange modify themselves - a translucent claw has been overlaid over his reaching right. You’re vaguely fearful of this stranger, but at the same time you feel at ease. There’s something familiar about him. As you focus on the sharp red talons of the man’s hand moving towards your chest, you hear a name being shouted from behind the door. You hang onto something - a brief piece of your lucidity that should have been lost to the chaos that stirred your soul. What was it that you wanted?

 1. “Ber...ser...ker…?”

 2. “I… don’t… want….”
 3. “This… to… end…”

It's easy as, 1 2 3
As simple as, do re mi
A B C, 1 2 3
Baby, you and me

You still persist even as you feel your identity, your shell, being peeled away by the man’s very presence. Your lips tremble as you attempt to say something - this is the first time you’ve ever felt cornered. Pain starts to flood your body and the air around your artificial arm slowly starts to distort…

“Ber...ser...ke-”

SHING!

There’s a sudden flash of silver that interrupts your voice. The man in front of you reels backwards and clutches his hand as you nearly fall backwards. The pain remains, but you manage to quickly regain your wits. You’re Sheila Twain and it seems that you’ve somehow been led to a corporate office. A quick glance at the suited man’s hand reveals that a sharp, metal implement has dug into his palm. You recognize its shape instantly - a throwing star. Though you find the strength to stand straight sapped by whatever Magecraft briefly affected you, you remain as vigilant as ever. Your eyes dart around the room before a dark shape seems to fall from the ceiling.

“You! You said Goro just now didn’t you? You’re working with that bastard, aren’t you?!”

Standing in front of you is a black-haired boy wearing a dark blue hoodie and black clothing. He’s taken a stance low to the ground and looks to be holding some sort of blade. He’s shorter than you and his voice carries a slight accent. His tone carries nothing but bitter hatred. It’s more than likely that he’s a high school student.

“Tch. And I was so close too. To think I’d be blind sided by something as simple as this…”

Even as blood continues to drip from the man’s injured palm, his voice remains as slippery as ever. His eyes scrutinize the assailant before him as he yanks out the throwing weapon and tosses it to the floor. The silver haired man’s face remains as collected as ever. The next few seconds are filled with a tense silence…

That’s soon broken by an immensely loud noise from the door behind you. The entire building seems to quake for that brief moment and you lose your balance and fall backwards. Then, you feel a brief surge of mana in the air. It diffuses through the area and fades quickly, but even the other two in the room glance at the door in surprise. Step. Step. Step. You can hear his footfalls as he approaches. Instinctively, you cover your head as the elegant oak door slams open.

The Black Knight shambles in looking slightly injured but otherwise still in fighting condition. He pants as he holsters a hunting horn on his left.  His blade scratches the shining tiles as he drags it behind him. Though you can see that his Mad Enhancement hasn’t gone up, the look on his face indicates that your Servant is pissed.

The silver-haired man is the first to move as he vaults over his desk and slips a hand under the table. Hoodie starts to move but another person materializes. As Berserker tosses you over his shoulder without a word, you catch a glimpse of a young woman in a red hood. Her lips move, but you can’t hear a thing. Pain overwhelms your body and all you can do is silently endure it. It feels as if you’re slowly being put through a grinder starting with the left-side of your body. Your eyes narrow as Berserker snarls out something. For some reason, the room starts to darken. Large metal shutters begin to slide into place over the glass panes that make up the other side of the room.

You’re moving now, or rather Berserker is. From your position slung over his shoulder, you can make out the far-off silhouettes of inhuman figures moving towards you. Their red eyes herald their arrival in the darkness of the hall. The pain spreads to your head and you find yourself unable to focus. You lose consciousness.

---

This must be what a hangover feels like. You have never been more sure in your life about the phrase ‘feeling like shit’ being a perfect match for your current state. As you move to sit up, a slight pain shoots up your side. You groan and lay back on what seems to be a hard surface. The view of the ceiling shows some fluorescent lights, corrugated iron, and steel supports. When you gaze to your right, you see nothing but a wall of cardboard.

“Ah, you’re up already? Your Servant was worried about you. It seems that you lost consciousness during the escape - I do hope that you didn’t mind the bumpy ride Miss.”

It’s the young woman from earlier.  Aside from her long gray hair, she seems to be rather plain. She seems rather pleasant regardless. She offers you a hand and you manage to sit up this time. It seems that you’re in a warehouse now. It’s surprisingly clean and organized and you can make out the distinct logos of a certain online retailer. You slightly relax when you spot Berserker conversing or… perhaps arguing with the hoodie-wearing boy. Now that you think about it, you remember spotting them at the WcDonald’s the day before.

 1. Call Berserker over and get some answers. You can’t help but remain suspicious about this strange pair.

 2. “Some answers right now would be nice. For one, who are you people and why were you even at Royden Robotics?”

 3. [Write-In]

3. Call Beserker over and then demand an answer from these mysterious rescuers(?). Some fact crosschecking between them would be nice.

Even if you haven’t been killed yet, there’s no way you’ll just converse with this stranger so freely. You call Berserker over and he disengages from his little spat with the black-haired boy. Though he looks immensely relieved, you hold motion for him to stop. You fold your arms and begin to speak once everyone has come around.

“Some answers right now would be nice. For one, who are you people and why were you even at Royden Robotics?”

The youth steps forward. The enmity in his eyes is culpable, though you’re certain that it isn’t directed towards you.

“...That man is an associate of someone who’s done me a great wrong. We were observing the building when you suddenly showed up.  Your arrival opened the door for me.”

You narrow your eyes as he delivers his answer with a cold tone that barely conceals the rage behind his voice. Even Berserker isn’t this edgy.  It doesn’t seem like he’s aware of the fact that you’ve actually seen them around several times prior to this. Still, you decide to press him for more answers.

“If that’s the case, then why have the two of you been stalking us? Did you really think I wouldn’t have noticed you two?”

“!”

He’s taken aback by this sudden revelation and takes a step back as the red-cloaked girl sighs in exasperation. His mouth moves but it seems that he’s too shocked to even speak coherently. She pulls him back and clears his throat.

“The truth of the matter is, we were actually hoping to approach the two of you to form an alliance. Though my Master won’t admit it, he doesn’t believe that he can handle this matter with just the two of us. Once again, I apologize for the subterfuge.”

“H-Hey, Rider, don’t just tell them everything like that!”

“Master… we won’t get anywhere if we don’t explain ourselves. This would have happened sooner if you weren’t so shy about asking for help.”

A critical hit. You’re honestly surprised that his Servant has managed to rein him in so easily. He shambles to a corner of the warehouse and proceeds to sulk. Berserker bites his lip as he suppresses the urge to laugh. Admittedly, it is amusing to see someone get the wind completely knocked out of them like that.

“I see. But what makes you think that we would accept an alliance with the two of you? The Grail’s power is more than enough to break such agreements is it not?”

“...That’s the thing. My Master has only joined this conflict to kill another master… to be honest with you, he isn’t even a Magus. He merely hijacked another’s summoning ritual - his lust for revenge is more important than a simple wish.”

Despite those words, you can’t help but feel wary about this. With Kun, you knew you could trust her because her Servant had already been taken out. Even with those words, you can’t help but doubt their intentions. You request some time to think about it and drag Berserker to the crates where you awoke. If anything, some input from your Servant might help you come to a decision.

“Twain, though he’s an insufferable little prick, he did make the decision to intervene and bail us out. As much as I hate to admit it, we wouldn’t have gotten out of their without Rider’s wolf. I don’t know about you, but I really want to fuck up that Royden guy after what he pulled. Our interests sorta align, y’know?”

The prospect of having another Servant supporting you is rather enticing. Though you know very little about these two aside from the fact that they didn’t kill you in your sleep or leave you to die back there. It’s almost unsettling to think about how they’ve tailed you during the daytime.

 1. Accept the offer of an alliance.

 2. Reject the offer and leave the warehouse.

 3. [WRITE-IN]

3. Accept the offer of an alliance but demand that they prove themselves somehow. Give you some kind of collateral, etc.

>Rider

>Red cloak

>Wolf

Little Red Riding Hood? I'd like to think that such an innocent figure is at least somewhat trustworthy. Based on that assumption, we just need to make sure the master is serious about this deal.

3. Accept the offer, but demand that the master fork over a command seal as proof that he's serious about this. If a wish means less to this master than revenge, he won't mind giving up the ability to turn a wish into a command if it means getting closer to that revenge. Otherwise we ought to assume that this deal is disingenuous.

You purse your lips as you come to a decision. Having another Servant on your side is definitely useful - but you’d like some insurance. You clear your throat and approach the pair once more - it seems that the boy has regained his composure. His intense gaze is focused squarely on you as you begin to speak.

“...I’ll agree to forming an alliance with the two of you. Though, I can’t just take your intentions at face value with you words alone. Though I’d prefer if you transferred over a Command Seal, we’d need the overseer for that - instead, I’d like you to order your Servant to bring no harm upon both Berserker and I.”

You briefly consider having the young man establish a Geis to ensure your protection, but he seems like someone you’d be able to take care of without Berserker’s aid. The hoodie-wearing boy nods solemnly as a red pattern begins to glow through the fabric covering his right shoulder.

“Very well. I, Kouki Rokakku, order you to bring no harm upon Twain or Berserker through your action or inaction. That good enough for you?”

His words are punctuated with the disappearance of one third of the pattern. The glow falls silent as Rider nudges her Master forward. He extends a hand out which you shake with a curt nod. Berserker seems to be contemplating something as he stands back and watches with his arms folded.

“I guess introductions are in order, yeah? I’m Kouki Rokkaku, a practitioner of  Kōga-ryū. I’m not much of a magus, but my skills as a ninja are more than enough to compensate. And like I said before, I’m only here for one thing - revenge. It just so happened that he became embroiled in this war.”

“And I am Rider. I’d like to apologize in advance for that nasty look on my Master’s face, he can’t help it. I look forward to working with the two of you.”

Both you and Berserker give short introductions as well. Though Kouki is young, you find yourself struggling not to smile at the prospect of having a trained ninja at your beck and call. So long as you stay out of his way, it seems like this will be a very useful alliance.

“Alright - Rider and I are going to check the perimeter and make sure that none of Royden’s toys haven’t managed to track us down. The bounded field I set up is pretty weak, but it’s more than enough to serve as an early warning signal.”

“That reminds me, don’t be alarmed if a Chinese girl shows up. Her name is Xiahou Kun - another one of my allies. Though, her Servant has already been eliminated from the war. And Berserker, try not to seduce her.”

“Eh? What the hell do you mean by that?”

“Hmph, I suppose the Mad Enhancement has also made you denser than a neutron star.”

“...This is almost like one of those Japanese comics you’ve been reading, Master.”

“...”

Kouki and Rider leave without another word as you call Kun. You ask her to break into your hotel room and retrieve some catalysts you’ve hidden. You also give her a brief rundown of the situation - namely that you’ve secured an alliance with another Master. As you end the call, Berserker leans up against a nearby shelf full of boxes.

You get to work drawing out the circle used to call upon your Master. Though, as you inscribe the pattern upon the ground you find yourself thinking back to Kouki. Were you ever like him at one point? Or are you still like that - but simply more subtle about it? You decide to break the silence when you feel Berserker’s eyes on you.

“Berserker, how do you feel about Kun? You can’t have been that ignorant to her interest in you - I refuse to believe that my Servant actually lacks that much awareness.”

“...I’ve felt her staring at me once or twice before. But, she’s not really my type.”

“What is yo-”

“AHEM. She reminds me of someone - back when I wasn’t dead, I was engaged to my best friend’s little sister. The whole thing was pretty political, y’know? We served under the same guy and everything. Though we were on good terms and all, I couldn’t return her love. She looked at me the same way Kun did - with the worship of a hero. I’m not anything like that.”

“Interesting. So did the two of you get married then?”

“No, no. I died before that. To be honest, I only proposed to her because Oliv- my friend went on and on about how his precious little sister really looked up to me. When I met her, I sorta had this feeling like ‘If I died, she’d probably kill herself and follow me’.”

“...Berserker, you’re Ro-”

“Hey~ Sheila!”

A cheerful ex-Master barges in looking no worse for the wear with a plastic bag with what you can only assume to be the catalysts you’ve asked for. At the very least, it seems like Kouki managed to remember your words. As you take the bag from her and begin setting up the summoning circle, you find yourself occasionally staring at the young girl clinging onto Berserker. For some reason, you feel something welling up in your chest. Still, you manage to set up the ritual as the Master of Rider and his red-cloaked Servant return.

You’ve set up the circle behind some boxes and Berserker’s (sort of) keeping guard.  While you’ve accepted these people as your allies, the secrets of calling upon the Thunderbird are a closely guarded secret. The only other person who’s seen you call upon the source of your power is Berserker.

A roar of thunder fills the warehouse and a blinding flash of light as a man clad in a white uniform stands tall and resolute in the center of the circle. His eyes are closed tightly and his arms are folded, but he still brings his head down to ‘gaze’ at you. The lightning bottled up within you races as you lower your head.

“Twain, it’s good to see that you’ve managed to survive this long even in such a diminished state. It seems like you’re ready to regain more of your abilities.”

“Of course sir. If the Freeshooter is the best that the Mage’s Association has to offer, they’ll stand no chance against me.”

“I saw - and while you did perform admirably it did ultimately end in your opponent’s escape. And your apparent death. You look rather well for someone who was butchered by their own Servant.”

“Come again? I did lose my left arm to Berserker, but I’m still alive.”

“Indeed. Though it’s clear that this isn’t one of that thing’s tricks - you’re still Sheila Twain. Though I can sense something strange currently afflicting you. It’s not something you need to worry about like a curse, but it’s definitely not anything a magus could achieve on their own.”

“...I see. Interesting. L-Let’s continue then.”

Though your mentor enjoys being as cryptic as possible with you, his plain words were enough to shake you to the core. You glance down briefly at the mark on your hand as your mentor speaks once more.

“For now, it seems like you’ll be able to handle this much with that body of yours. I’ll give you a choice. You can either regain the ability to channel lightning into your muscles for raw strength and endurance or a greater control over electricity that should allow you to ‘modify’ those modern electronics you humans are so fond of these days.”

You pause as you contemplate the two choices. They’re both abilities that you learned after exerting mastery over the two basic ones you currently have. The first basically boils down to a more powerful version of Reinforcement based on the energy you have stored up. From prior experience, you recall that you’ve been able to shrug off a bullet with it and toss cars around like nothing. The other option essentially boiled down to high-speed hacking. While it’s uses were limited against most magi, it came in handy more than once when dealing with technology-reliant foes.

CHOICES

 1. [Body Electric] - regain the ability to stimulate your muscles to grant yourself superhuman strength and endurance for a limited time.

 2. [Grid Jacker] - regain the ability to perform high-speed hacking on electronic devices through your control over electrical currents.
