Fantasy Dragons Reborn

Grey

Grey scratches his head, honestly unsure himself why he turned down the money other than some vague feeling of unease about taking it. Strangely he found that he didn't mind Lil, even though she was loud and overbearing, two things he is historically very bad with. Though on second thought, that might be the alcohol talking, or maybe not, who can tell? Human relationships are tiring. As Grey thought about how to answer her question she turned and began to speak to her brother at which point Grey decides that it's past the time to answer and gives up. He looks over at the brother for the first time. Grey then realized that he had forgotten to pay for a room at the inn today as well when Lil brought it up. "Oi, Lil, Kye, know of anywhere other than the inn to stay the night?"

Alisa ElienAlisa shrugged, "It's late, I planned on resting here anyway. Why else would I rent a room?" She replied. It was then she noticed him seemingly avoiding looking at her. Why? She narrowed her gaze at him, ignoring his question, and trying to figure out why he was avoiding her. "Why are you doing your damndest to look everywhere but at the person talking to you?" She asked him flatly.
Koziak had a feeling that he was being starred at. He tried not being suspicious which only made him more suspicious. Oh god she knows, she knows. A sweat drops, as Alisa spoke to him. He sighs and points to her chest, with his head held down in shame. Those. He left his head up and puts his head down. I'm just trying not to look at them, so I look away whenever I get the urge. He looks towards the innkeep. More ale! He said loud enough for the bar keep to hear him.

The doors open and three people walk in. They were all definitely human. He looked at Alisa.
Look more "squishies". He chuckled. @HuorSpinks @Mykinkaiser

Forrest the Lovable Bear PersonForrest looked at the book Magnus had strapped to himself curiously. Civilization had such weird looking things... Not to mention wherever they were at the moment was enormous compared to the bubble shop they had been in a few minutes ago. "Hey, before we go anywhere," the bear poked at the bronze, textured rectangle, "What is that thing?"

Noticing the elf beside him seemed to have trouble keeping her eyes open, he threw her onto his back happily before staring intently at Magnus' book

Willow the Hydra

Willow had barely noticed what was going on the entire way there, kind of just following along and trying to keep awake. When they finally got there, she looked around with glazed eyes, trying to analyze the area, but having a hard time focusing. Forrest had lifted her on his back, meaning she was on the soft fluffy cloud that was his body. She lazily let herself sink into his toga, cradled against his warm body and held in place by the toga's belt. She let herself lower her guard and succumb to the comfort of Forrest, curling up and snuggling into his back subconsciously.

Alisa Elien

Alisa arched a brow when he pointed to her chest and said 'those'. Was..her boobs seriously the reason he was avoiding looking at her? At first she simply chuckled lowly, as she thought about it more she couldn't help but laugh louder until the entire inn could hear her. She just honestly couldn't believe that was the reason he was acting all weird. Honestly, she couldn't give a shit less if he stared. Really. "
Really? Seriously? That's the reason you're acting like you'll catch the plague if you look at me?" She asked him in an amused fashion after she'd composed herself a bit.

"
Oh man. You seriously think I care if someone stares at my chest? Dontcha think I'd wear thicker armor if I did? I honestly don't care, especially if it means you'll stop acting all funky." She told him. Soon after she'd finally noticed the people that had came in a while back, meh. Only person she spared more than a second of her attention on was the tall chick. She looked strong for a human like Koziak, but then again strong looking humans were often deceieving. Main thing she had going for her was height, from Alisa's perspective and thus wasn't really worth her time unless she decided to insult her.

Kylios - Tavern

"Eight years, I think," Kylios said quickly, straightening up in his seat the moment his sister directed her attention on him. Truth be told, he had not been keeping track either. Things had been happening so fast these past few years that he had pretty much lost track of how much time had passed since important events, since he had been kept busy and learning so much. He trusted Lilly's calculations anyway. If she said it was eight years, it was probably eight years. Time seemed to past so fast when one was engaged in work that was taxing yet enjoyable.

Horror dawned on his face as he listened to the story that was reluctantly shared by his sister. His imagination, quite vast as it already was, immediately began filling in the blanks to the event with the worst possible scenarios. His face grew pale and instinctively he placed a hand on Lilly's lower arm. "Are... are you all right?" Was the only the he could think of stuttering, even though he knew that now, she would probably say yes. He had not been there during that time, as she had always been during the worst points in his life and he felt immensely guilty for that. Even though he would probably have been extremely useless when faced by a whole group of trained soldiers, at least in the aftermath he should have been there to care of her. Guilt made his shoulders slump slightly as he muttered an ashamed, "I'm sorry..."

At least now she had offered an opportunity to help out. "Sure," he said, straightening slightly, the smile back on his face. "My living quarters are located on the top floor, directly above my shop. There's enough space for two people. I have a spare mattress as well, that I can use." She would take the bed, of course. After relating what had happened to her there was no way he was going to allow her to experience any discomfort. He would be an extremely lousy brother if he did.

Kylios turned to the other man as he posed his own question. He had almost forgotten that the man was there due to the emotions that he had been experiencing earlier. A thoughtful frown appeared on his face as he processed the options the man had. He was extremely reluctant at the thought of opening his living quarters to a complete stranger. Family was different; he barely even knew this guy. "There's more than one inn offering rooms in this city, and there are a few boarding houses as well," he said finally. "If you like, I could help you look for a place to stay. I know this city quite well."

Grey

The corners of Grey's mouth twitching a bit in a ghost of a smile at the offer. However he is not that dense, well dense isn't the right word. Grey's actually very perceptive, that's the main reason he's still alive. He only acts upon these observations when absolutely necessary, conservation of energy and all that. Back on topic, he's not about to separate these two during their little emotion fest, well, the real reason is that he doesn't really want to talk to anyone and if Kye showed him around he'd probably say things and Grey would be forced to respond, but hey, Grey can pretend to be a good person once and a while, right? He shakes his head slightly, "That's fine, just point me in the right direction and I'll find my way... probably..." he says, utterly failing at sounding reliable.

Magnus Cain

Magnus had just put his book in his bag when Forest asked what the book was. He was not sure how to really explain so he could understand. An it seemed lile Willow would ne any help because she was fast asleep in his arms. "Well you see is a book that is bound in the scales of a dragon containing spells that are written in the dragon language. This one of seven of these books, I have always wanted to read this and learn more. I guess that is also why I sm very fascinated by dragons."

Lilith Tennant - Town Tavern

Lilly's brain was in another space when her brother brought her back to the world, resting a hand on her lower arm. Here she looked to the side at him and gave a weak little smile. "I'm alive right now, aint I?" That was all she could really muster as a response, she still had nightmares about it but it did cause her to train with a dizzing intensity making her as good a swordsman now as she was. When he agreed to let her stay, her face beemed excitedly. She glossed over the fact he would sleep on the matress, and knew she could physically force him to take his own bed. She wouldn't be much of a guest if she took his bed. Suddenly the idea of a warm bath was calling to her and her eyes were going hazy. "The first thing I'm doing when we go back to your shop is having a bath. This is happening." Grinning happily to him. And he knew she would pull through with it. She turned her head to face Grey now. "There is a not bad Inn down the road called the "Hustling Bustler", they almost always have rooms and the bar maids are a sight to see. If you're into that kind of thing...I'm sure there are some nice looking guys if you swing that way to."

Forrest the Lovable Bear PersonForrest rubbed a hand down the intricate designs on the book's covers, the bronze scales having a cool feeling to them, and as Magnus attempted to explain what it was, he only nodded every time the other said the word 'book'. Deciding not to ask what a book was quite yet, he only said, "Sounds nice! We should come back to this place later! But where do we go now? Willow's sleeping on my back, so I think we should head back to the forest before anything else... but after that."

Grey

Grey nods in thanks and leaves a sack of coins on the table to pay for his drink before getting up and starting to head for the door. Unfortunately for him, he yawns when he was about halfway there and, as usual when someone yawns, he inadvertently closes his eyes. Now this wouldn't be unfortunate if a large, and very drunk, man hadn't staggered into Grey's path. The inevitable happens and Grey runs headfirst into him, staggering back a step or so in surprise. This likely wouldn't have been much of a problem, earning him a dirty look at most, if it hadn't been for the fact that Grey had run into the man's tankard, spilling it all over the man's shirt. The man looks at Grey incredulously, "You bashtard, how're you gunna make up fer thish?" he says in about the most cliché way imaginable, glaring at Grey in drunken fury. As he says this four other men, just as large, just as angry, and most importantly, just as drunk gather around him like underlings. It seems that this man and his group are the "tough guys" of this bar, the kind who get piss drunk and look for reasons to fight every night. Grey sighs slightly in annoyance as he's been in this position a few times before and he knows from experience that he won't be able to use this bar if he doesn't deal with this lot. That's a problem though, the ale is good at this bar and he does in fact want to come back, so he readies himself for the inevitable, if cliché, fight. The drunks, for their part, completely misread his tired look for one of boredom which further sets them off. They are the toughest guys in this bar! They don't take anything from anyone! Who does this little punk think he is huh? They begin to surround him with the intent of beating the "boredom" out of his face. At this point other customers are taking notice and backing away so as not to get caught up in the beat down. Many are whispering to each other, looks of pity for Grey on their faces, the more unsavory types are making bets as to how long Grey will last. In the midst of all this Grey, who just wants a nap, sighs again, "How troublesome..." he mutters. This sigh was sort of like a trigger so to speak, well, more of the last straw really, the first drunkard, with a cry of "YER DEAD!" launches a meaty fist at Grey's face. His expression turns to one of confused surprise when his fist meets empty air, then one of shocked pain as he collapses to the ground. To most people's surprise Grey had swayed out of the way of the punch while pivoting and delivering a beautiful, and heavy, back kick straight into the man's solar plexus, knocking him off of his feet. He proceeds to duck low and scythe another man's legs out from under him before rolling backwards onto his feet, avoiding another punch in the process. The first drunk remains on the ground, his face turning a bit blue, the second picks himself off of the ground and rushes Grey, fists swinging. Grey simply plants a drop kick onto the man's chest, taking him off his feet as well. Before Grey can manage to regain his feet he is hauled up by one of the three drunks still standing who then holds him still for the others to hit. Not really feeling up for being hit Grey snaps his head backwards into the man's nose causing the man to loosen his grip, Grey then proceeds to elbow him in the stomach and break free to engage the one coming to hit him. At this point the man who had been kicked at the beginning gets shakily to his feet. Grey sighs internally, wanting to finish the fight quickly he decides to put forth some more effort. He catches the next man's punch with his right arm, pulling it forwards along its momentum, before throwing his left shoulder into the elbow, snapping it. The man screams in pain and collapses, holding his useless arm. Grey then steps into the next man's punch, his (the man's) arm glancing harmlessly off of Grey's shoulder as the smaller man hammers three short, sharp blows into his gut before swinging his elbow into the man's jaw. Grey then rolls to the side as a drunk tries to sucker punch him in the back of the head, accidentally punching his friend in the face and causing him to go down heavily, the combination of alcohol and punches depriving him of consciousness. Grey turns to face the three remaining drunks who had gathered in a group in front of him. Grey then goes on the offensive, turning towards the man on the right he steps in and, evading the man's punch, spins and delivers a high back kick to the side of the man's head, knocking him out as well. The next drunk comes a little faster than Grey anticipated and as such he takes a glancing blow to the jaw. Grey staggers back a bit and the drunk goes to follow up on this opening. Grey regains his posture and steps back out of the range of the punch. The drunks staggers forward a bit as he doesn't meet any resistance to his heavy punch. Grey capitalizes on this by performing a leaping knee strike to the man's chin, snapping his head back and sending him crashing to the ground, unconscious. The first drunk, the only one left standing, is either too drunk or to angry to care that he's alone and throws another punch at Grey who responds by leaping up and hooking his legs around the man's head and throwing his body weight to the side, flipping the man over and rolling to his feet, leaving the man groaning on the floor. Looking slightly sheepish now that the fight's over Grey looks around before turning to the barkeep, "Sorry about that..." he says before starting to walk out the door, rubbing his eyes, yawning, and really looking forwards to a nap.

Lilith Tennant - Town Tavern

Lillith was in dream land thinking how good a warm, soaking bath would be, that was when she heard Grey mention thanks and her head turned back to him as she spotted his coins on the bench but he had not taken the sack of his winnings. At this she grasped her bag and lept off the stool to follow and force the man to take it. It was the only honourable thing to do afterall, he won fair and square. She was a good man's height away when the whole situation happened and the second the man looked aggressively her eyes narrowed and she straightened her shoulders, forgetting for a moment she had left her giant sword by the bar in her haste. That was when the group pulled together and she was about to yell at them in a booming voice but then Grey was all over it.

Lilly's green eyes watched him almost as if the world was in slow motion, every kick, every swing, every pass he made. His technique was incredible, even a warrior as strong and trained as she could see that. But he was so small! In her mind the biggest were always the strongest and the fact he dealt with them like they were nothing... Her pee brain was struggling to comprehend that. When all was sad and done she had a strange look on her face. Before he could leave she side-stepped him and blocked his exit, bag of coins offered out to him. "Your winnings..." She said in a soft tone. She wasn't even sure why she was using it. She wanted to tell him how impressed she was with his fight but it just got stuck in her throat. He could drink and fight so well, but he was not bulking or tall or imposing. She was struggling to process all this information and it showed on her face.

Grey

Didn't he just tell Lil he didn't want the money? He sighs internally, he's really way too tired for this... He could take the money, and admittedly not having to work for a while would be very nice, but it wouldn't sit right with him and that would affect his sleep so that's a no-go. On the other hand, Lil seems like she won't rest until he gets the money. Actually, speaking of Lil, why did she have such a weird look on her face? He didn't do anything strange did he? Eh, no use thinking about it too hard. He yawns, another wave of tiredness overtaking him, he's been up way too long so it is understandable. Grey is struck with a sudden idea, Lil seems like a decent person so if he were to go to sleep now she would probably take care of him. Not only that but he wouldn't have to deal with the issue of the winnings either. Feeling slightly proud of the plan Grey closes his eyes and begins to pitch forwards, muttering "night," as he falls asleep.

Alisa Elien

Alisa simply chuckled and shook her head as he stared at her chest briefly. Men were gunns be men, and quite frankly she didn't care. It'd gotten her quite a few discounts and free things over the years, after all. Who was she to stop while she was ahead? When he asked when she'd be going to sleep she responded with a yawn. Though before she could respond with anything verbal a fight broke out with the group that'd entered prior. Much to Alisa's surprise it wasn't the woman that looked like she could bench a full grown human male, it was one of the more scrawny men that werr with her.

Before she knew it he'd dispatched a group of men that looked at-least five times stronger and angrier than he. Though before she could say anything the tall chick had walked over talking to him about something and he seemingly passed out soon after. Meh...she'd do something about talking to him later. Then she decided to address Koziak after downing the rest of her last mug of ale. "
Now, actually. It's been fun but it's best I get to sleep. I'll cya in the morning I guess. I'll tell Elise about what went down too." She told him before patting him on the back, hopping off the stool, and walking upstairs to her room. After shutting the door she took off her armor and put on a plain white shirt she usually slept on, sleeping in armor was painful after all.

With that she crawled into the bed beside the one Elise was on and waited for sleep to take her.

Lilith Tennant - Town Tavern

Lilly had her hand outstretched with coin bag in place. He didn't say a word, if anything he just took a massive yawn! What a strange little man...She says little because everyone was littler then her. If that wasn't bizarre enough the man's body weight slumped forward to the point where Lilly dropped the coin bag in a panic, grasping his biceps to stop him slumping altogether. But his trajectory pretty much had him land face first into her surprisingly soft chest. Well, a more comfortable fall then her normal Titan armour might allow. Her eyes seemed huge. Did he just say Night? And sure enough she heard the steady breathing of someone fast asleep. She was stuck there with a limp man just kind of laying on her chest, not sure what to do now. "Ahhh Kylios?..." Maybe he had a better idea. She used what little brain power she had and suddenly scooped him up bridal style, carrying him like one might an infant. So very very strange she muttered to herself. "I guess I'll be carrying you to the tavern down the road...."

As if to answer her call the bartender suddenly shouted across the room. "If ya' wanna room I gots one left but I ain't carrying the guy there!" Here Lilith spun and nodded. "And only if ya' promise not to break any more of my Damn tables!" Here Lilly actually made another weirdly cute girl giggle. "Yeah sure Old Man." He humfed but Lilly was already walking to the stairs passing a strange little dwarf girl as she did. She wandered to a room to the far right, here she bashed a hip to swing the door open widely, before carrying the limp snoozing man to a bed centred in the middle. Here she rathered gently placed him on the sheets, forgoing undressing him because weird, but did unhook his bow and quiver, and dragged off his boots, tucking the sheets up under his chin. She figured if he was still uncomfortable he could change himself. She took a step back to gaze at him. "Such a strange Little Man. Hope we meet again." Blinking, she turned on her heel and walked back out closing the door behind her. She made her way back to the bar and hoisted her giant sword over her shoulder, glancing back to her brother. "Well. That was weird. Anyway, did you want to head back to your shop? I've had my fill of Ale but that bath is sounding glorious." Lilly was one of simple pleasure, never one to multi-task and focusing on one job at a time. And she desperately wanted a hot bath. With Bubbles.

Kylios - Tavern

Kylios quickly closed his mouth when it came to his realization that he had been gaping. Things sure had escalated quickly. "Uh, sure," he said, quickly getting up from where he was seated. First, he took a quick trip to the bartender to pay for the food and drink he had consumed, leaving enough change for what would be considered a good tip in this lands. Then, he headed back to where his sister was located. "I did need to check on how my potion was doing. And to clear up the mess those troublemakers left in their wake." Now that he had remembered that mess, he was starting to get antsy. It was usually quite unlike him to leave messes unchecked, but so much had been happening, not to mention that he had more or less been pushed out of his own shop.

Kylios - Alchemist Shop

Hence, it was understandable that the man walked quite fast in order to get to his shop, trusting his sister to follow behind him, the whole time wondering if he still had a shop to return to. Much to his relief, his shop was still standing. He quickly unlocked the door and headed in. It was getting rather late, so he left the closed sign still displayed. "My living quarters are right at the top floor. Second floor's the lab. If you like, you could go up first and make yourself comfortable. There's some stuff that I need to do first," he said, turning to her. She was here, and he much rather not have customers interrupting their conversation if they should have one. Much to his relief, those troublemakers at least had the sense to pour his potions into bowls rather than throw them onto the floor, so it was an easy matter of draining away the potions and washing the bowls. What he needed to do next though, was to replace the potions that had been destroyed. He was not looking forward to that. He supposed that could be left on the morrow.

Next, he headed up to his lab to check on the potion that he had been brewing for the customer. He blinked in surprise when he realised the potion was now finished. All he needed to do was bottle and label it. He rubbed at his eyes. Had it really been three hours at the tavern? He shook his head and quickly bottled and labeled the potion, leaving it on his work desk. He had told the customer to come back in three hours, so he expected her to appear soon. In the meantime, there was other things he needed to do. Things of a more personal nature, like catch up with a sibling that he had not seen in over eight years.

He headed up to the third floor and knocked tentatively on the door. In case she was within and he did not want to end up accidentally walking in on her changing.

Magnus was not so sure what Forest meant by "we should head back to the forest before anything else... but after that." But he was pretty sure that it did not matter to him where they went. "Forest buddy we can go where ever you want just point me in the direction you want to go." Magnus immediately regretted what he had said but he knew he could not go back on his word. H e considered asking Willow for help but she was asleep in forest arms and she looked so happy too. Magnus did not want to ruin what looked like a good moment for her. So he just waited for Forest to tell him what they were going to do next.

Lilith Tennant - Hurried returning to the Alchemist Store

Lilith watched her brother leave the generous tip at the bar, which reminded her of the coin bag she had dropped at the exit to the tavern. She had a mind to scoop it up and tuck it into sleep man's bag but as she neared the door she realised it had long since gone. She glanced around the tavern with a dangerous gaze. "Scavengers..." But that was all she said of the matter, following diligently behind her brother. She was amazed just how fast his short legs could carry him, she had to use almost a full stride of her long legs to keep up. In moments, they had gotten inside and she peered over her shoulder noticing him keeping the sign saying closed on the door. When he explained the layout to his shop she nodded and smiled. Here she drifted from him as he did clean up duty, venturing upstairs and placing her sword in a corner of his bedroom. She looked at it with an angry little twitch in her eyes, once she had her bath she was sharpening that blade. With that she disappeared into the bathroom and drew herself a nice, hot bath. She undressed, and slipped in the water with a rediculous happy moan escaping her lips. Every muscle ached from the days of walking. She even made a habit of washing and brushing her long hair. After what felt like hours but was only a half hour or so, she emerged from the bathroom with a towel wrapped snuggly around her body. Her hair loosely hanging around her shoulders. As she heard a knock on the door she turned and smiled, taking a seat on the corner of his bed. "Come in Kylios! Silly brother...you don't need to be modest around me..." She just sat there with the towel wrapped around her. "Though if you don't mind, a spare pair of clothes would be nice...My clothes desperately need a wash." Perhaps eluding him to what might await his vision if he did step inside the room.

Forrest the Lovable Bear PersonForrest nodded before pointing in the direction of the dense woodlands he was so familiar with. It was odd, because even when this was only his first time in the city let alone so deep in, he knew exactly where the forests were despite his vision being blocked by the walls... "Let's go back to the forest to finish things up there before adventuring. Willow can't sleep on my back forever... well, she can, but it might hurt her after a while."

...

Forrest gently set the elf down on the soft grass before lying beside her, soaking in the feeling of the green blades of billions of plant cells... "I kinda don't wanna go... but you guys have things to do, and I don't wanna be left behind. So... I guess we should all take a nap before heading off?"

Willow the Hydra

Willow blinked her eyes open to find herself on the forest floor? She wasn't sure what was going on, but she saw Forrest was there, so everything was casual. Rubbing her eyes, she took a deep breath awake. "What's going on? What are we doing now?" she asked groggily, obviously having no idea what they were doing at all. She sat up and blinked heavily a few times to get herself awake. She had a nice nap; for some reason Forrest was rather comfortable to sleep on. But now she figured it was time to get up so they could do stuff without her being a hindrance anymore. She stretched, then held her legs for support, still not wanting to actually get up. Looking into the forest, she wondered what else they would have to face next.

Willow had finally woken up from her nap and asked what we were going to do next. Well they were not really sure of what we should do. Although Magnus without really knowing why could feel that something was about to happen real soon. Something or someone was out there about to make things interesting but also dangerous. He look to the skies up on high and could not believe what he saw. "Hey guys we have a problem, a big problem." It was a large skeleton dragon flying toward the city. And what came next was even stranger. "Forest have you ever someone dressed like that in the woods before?" It was a group of man or women dresses in black robes going the same way as the dragon.

Forrest the Lovable Bear PersonForrest looked over to his side with a grin to see Willow awaken. She'd been sleeping for quite a while, and the grogginess in her voice suggested she needed more. "Nothing, really. I was just getting ready to get to sleep before you woke up," he yawned in between his sentence, "But I was also hoping you'd stay asleep. When we all start adventuring, I'm probably gonna be the only one not tired now, though. "And, uhh... What...?"

Forrest lifted his head up to look at the perfect lines of marching people wearing robes somewhat like the one he had seen on that man from earlier, and high above them, a dragon made of bones and unsettling purple flabs of skin in between the wings... "The only people I've seen here were hunters and you guys! But now that I think about it, they all look like that guy we fought earlier... Maybe he's getting revenge?" He turned his head back to the sleepy Willow, slowly getting back onto his feet. The staple spear and shield formed where they would normally be in combat as the plants surrounding him began to inch out from the ground. "Whatever they're doing here, I really don't think it's good... What do you think, Willow?"

Willow the Hydra

She looked lazily up to him, almost as if she wasn't really paying attention. "Wha- Oh er... Yes?" she answered, not sure what he was talking about. She heaved herself to her feet and stretched a little, trying to get the stiffness out of her limbs. Finally getting to actually looking around, she saw the cult of people but not the dragon. Before they could get close, she decided it might be best to transform into a dragon, so she did. Once she did, she looked up at Forrest, then Magnus. Seeing no reason to approach them, she stayed close to Forrest's legs in case something happened. She didn't want to be totally useless if an attack broke out, so this might be the safest place for her to be. Besides, who knew what those cultists wanted. It sounded like they were after dragons, but most everyone nowadays were seeking their power. If she could stop them from reaching her brethren, she would do so by any means necessary, even at the cost of her own freedom.

From what Magnus saw he got curious and concerned about the dragon and the cultist and why they were going to the city. He almost thought he might have to convince the others to follow him to see what was going to happen but it seemed like that might not be an issue. He could see it in there eyes that they wanted to go as bad as he did. "Guy's we have two options here we can either follow them quietly to see what they are doing here, or we can attack them right now." He thought real careful on what they should do but he wanted to make sure that they all agreed on what they were going to do, it was now no longer just his life at steak.
