Fantasy Code FERAL

Falarion continued aimlessly digging about near the digging crew, but stopped the instant Duik was spotted.

Bounding over near Alec, Falarion halted in place and stood rigid with his ears forward, as he watched Duik get pulled clear of the rubble.

Stiff, Falarion walked over to Alec's side and peered over his shoulder with worry in his eyes, as he saw Duik's battered body and lack of breathing.

Letting out a small whimper, Falarion folded his ears against his head and glanced away just as Duik let out a small cough.

Eyes wide now, Falarion suddenly was at Duik's side and saying, "Duik! You're okay! You're alive!"

Suddenly, Luness' flare happened and Falarion was caught completely off-guard by it.

Staggering to the side, Falarion then flopped down on his side in a daze.

"Ugh, I can't see...what just happened?"

Oblivious once more, Falarion didn't understand why Alec suddenly called out Xiao's name. What was happening now?

@SilverFlight

Manjano quietly followed after Beth and uncertainly paused at the edge of the rubble when Beth pulled back Alec and redirected their digging team.

Glancing about, Manjano then saw Luness' light growing in intensity and quickly looked away while covering his eyes in time to avoid being blinded by her attack.

Looking at the Nian after the attack, Manjano let out a small sigh of relief when it clumsily flew away and was clearly making a break for it. The team didn't seem ready to handle it so it was best for it to run away.

Yet, Xiao and Laohu seemed to be up in the rigging above and now they were in the line of fire, as the Nian stumbled right at them.

Hearing Duik was found, Manjano felt as if he should've been relieved, but now Xiao and Laohu were both in danger. It just never seemed to end.

Leandra chanced a glance over her table just after Luness did her thing, watching in excitement as the Nian flew away in a daze. Yes! They'd won!

Hearing Alec had found Duik, Leandra gleefully scrambled onto the stage and began walking towards him. Duik was safe, the Nian was running away, nobody was dead. This was definitely a win.

Luness flew up to land onto Leandra's shoulder and the two grinned at each other only to freeze mid-step upon hearing Alec's terrified shouting of Xiao's name. Oh no.

Glancing to the ceiling, Leandra gasped when she saw the Nian stumbling right towards Xiao Hui and Laohu. No!

Sprinting to the area of the stage where she could only guess Xiao might end up falling, Leandra then pointed to where Xiao was and Luness was quickly airborne, flying up to vainly try to grab some kind of clothing or even body part so she could try to slow Xiao's fall. Or even Laohu's fall if he fell over.

Barry got up from the ground after knocking Zoe down with him. He gave a quick nod to her and inspected her at the same time. She seemed less dazed from whatever was going on in her mind. She looked just have cold feet for the time being. The commotion from the battle caught his attention. Seemed the Nian wasn't having a good time out there. When Eos smacked it to it, Barry couldn't help but wince at it. He would not like being the target for that attack. As the Nian raised to swipe Eos, he turned to Zoe. He could only imagine the look on her face. As his eyes rested where she would be, a clang from the Nians attack against metal rang. [geez that girl moves fast.] he smiled. They didn't need any more injures on the team.

With the flare from Luness radiating, the Nian fled in what could only be humiliation if it could feel that.
Yeah! That's right meat head! Don't you dare think about messing with us again ya baby. BB yelled at it as it flew away. Though she didn't do much, it felt good getting that out of her system. She saw Barry rushing over to the rest of them as he was looking up. BB turned to face what was the Nian barreling towards Xiao. Hey! What did I say about messing with us?!

Raven/Kitsune

It was a struggle to carefully wind his way through the live wires and sharp, pokey bits of metal that had fallen atop the hyena, but Kitsune was a clever fox (at least, that's what he kept telling himself) and he managed to find just the right path to Duik. On arrival at his goal, Kitsune sniffed at the unconscious Duik and determined that for now, at least, he lived.

Gently, gingerly, Kitsune eased his jowls around one of Duik's shoulders and then slowly backed out the way he had entered. It was an arduous process made even more maddening by the cacophony of noise in the club. Kitsune closed his eyes and focused on the task as he folded his ears down to block the blaring music and the screeches of the nian. Finally, at last, they emerged both sopping wet with muck and retardant pasted thickly into their fur.

He watched as Alec and Duik were reunited and relaxed – only a little – when the hyena regained consciousness. Kitsune looked back for Raven, but was interrupted by Alec's request. He peered back into the mass of wires and metal and spied ... something.

"Coax it out?" Kitsune said with a mild shrug. "Of course. I'm such the charmer, just ask the captain." With that, the fox re-entered the wire/metal maze.

The animal couldn't have been in there before, or else Kitsune would have smelled it right? But if that were so, then how did it get there? Where did it come from? Or, for that matter, what in the hell was it?

"Um, hey," Kitsune offered as he wiggled his way back into the debris. "It's ok, you can come out. The nian is ... well, my friends are dealing with it. You're safe." Yeah, such the charmer, he thought. Some of the debris shifted and from outside Kitsune heard another wire sizzle in the water. "Um, well, ok maybe not so safe in here," he added. "Come on, let's get you out of there before we both end up getting our innards fried."

* * *

Raven watched as the nian took flight. Even in it's destructiveness she admired its simplicity and the grace with which it lifted despite the assault that they had pressed upon it. Then, she noticed Xiao's position and sudden predicament.

"Dammit!" Raven swore as she took off toward Leandra with the same intention of doing ... well, something, even if it meant acting as a cushion for her fall. She holstered the .357 and came to a skidding halt next to the younger girl.

"Right," she said as she tried to appear to take command of what was virtually an impossible situation. Then, with quick thinking, she removed her long coat and handed one end to Leandra. "It isn't much, but we might be able to catch her with this between us."

Raven looked up and saw Luness heading for Xiao and thought that perhaps, with them all working together, the decent might be slowed enough that Leandra and her might actually pull it off with the makeshift net. A grin of confidence spread across her water and fire-retardant streaked face. "Yeah, we got this," she said.

Looking from below, Xiao Hui glanced down, worry clouding her mind as she took shallow breathes, hoping the team searching for Duirk found him soon as she spotted one of the newer agents from training earlier this morning. Julia and Aslan, was it? Soon. Rin sheathed his katana with Haku on his neck, distracting Nian as well. She smiled softly, seeing everyone together, working as a team, even through the unexpected encounter. Nevertheless, eyeing the haunting beast, Xui Hui bit her lip, wanting to grab the needles Nigel had given her. She had yet to use them, perhaps now would be a good time. Soon, chaos erupted for Nian, seeing that the noises from the firing of the bullets, BB's loud voice, Eos ramming into Nian, had managed to render Nian powerless and stumped, making him flail everywhere. The mix Duirk had played to distract Nian was working as well, giving him a sensory overload as he tried to resist each attack. Forming a small smile on her face, Xiao Hui clasped her hadn't together, "Come on, come on." She whispered, but seeing one of Nian's hind leg shooting out with massive force aiming towards Eos made her heart dropped. "Eos, look out!" Soon enough, Zoe had came swiftly to the rescue as she saved Eos from being trampled over. Sighing in relief, Xiao Hui cheered softly, "Good job, Zoe!" However, before she knew it, Luness managed to get in front of Nian and found her opportunity to blind him as Laohu quickly spoke, "Cover your eyes, Hui!" He said, lowering his head from the light and covered his eyes with his paws as Xiao Hui knelt down cover her eyes with her arm. Once the light was over, Xiao Hui opened her eyes up, walking towards the window of the room, as Laohu trotted near her. Hearing Nian's screeching and roars as he spazzed out from below, she internally cheered as Laohu grinned lopsidedly, "Hui, look." He signaled over to where the stage was to show that the others had found Duirk and he was safe. Breathing a sigh of relief, Xiao Hui looked towards Laohu, "Let's finish this!" She exclaimed, however, what she hadn't expect was that the half-blinded Nian was looking for an escape and what better way was it to go above the stage and head towards the roof to exit?

Before Xiao Hui had a chance to react, Laohu growled, his ears perked up, as his eyes widened,
"Hui, watch out!" Flying quickly towards them, staggering everywhere, Nian managed to feel the hinges up the floor and flew it open as his enormous frame managed to cause Laohu to collapse down to the ground, pawing at the floor as he called out, "Hui, get down!" Gasping widely, before she could even react of listen, Nian was right in front of her, as he rammed into her small frame, cracking her ribs and knocking the wind out of her, as if she was the bowling pin and he was the ball. "Hui!!" Laohu screamed in horror as he roared at Nian, trying to get to him, but the force of wind his wings made were to strong for him to get to her. Nian threw Xiao Hui across the room, behind him, like a rag doll, as she fell down the top floor, unconsciously. Once Nian was gone from view, Laohu quickly jumped down from the top of the level, seeing Luness from above, "Lune! Ease her falling!" He yelled in horror as he jumped down with Xiao Hui, attempting to catch her though he landed on the stage, falling on his paws as Xiao Hui miraculously fell into the small little "tarp" Leandra and Raven had made to catch her fall. Not caring that his paw may have been injured from the jump, he ran towards Lea and Raven, "Good thinking." He said quickly before checking over Xiao Hui, seeing a purple bruise forming on her belly. "Hui. . " He said softly, "Wake up, Nian's gone, Duirk's safe, come on." Laohu nudged her as they placed her on the ground. Whimpering softly he licked Xiao Hui, "Come on, get to your senses, Hui."

A weak and low murmur was heard from Xiao Hui's lips as she opened her eyes weakly, extending her hand out slightly, "L-Lao . .?" Hearing her voice, Laohu looked up, nudging his head against her hand, as a small smile formed on her lips, before she looked at the two girls and the pheonix, "Lea. . .Lune . . and. . Miss, thank you." She coughed, though it hurt too much to continue, every part of her aching. Attempting to get up, a shock ran through her small frame. Laohu felt suppressed a hiss, concern etching his tone, "That's not a good idea, lay down." Obeying Laohu's words, she nodded slightly, "Right. . so . . next time. . let's not be the back up plan. . ?" Xiao Hui attempted a slight laugh and joke, "We . . need to . . celebrate. . " She whispered softly, before closing her eyes, letting her hands fall to her side.

Alec watched in horror at the scene unfolded, he saw Xiao get tossed aside.

"What the heck are you standing next to me for?! Help her!" Duik yelped and that was enough to drive Alec forward.

He dove for the makeshift net and helped cushion Xiao's fall, making sure to protect her head and neck from the impact.

He shifted back as Raven and Lea placed her on the stage, propping himself up on both hands as he sat there, breathing heavily.

As Laohu nudged her Alec looked on with worry.

"Come one Xiao...you're killing me, almost losing the two people I care about most..." He stopped himself as Xiao stirred.

When she spoke he was so relieved he let himself fall onto the flat of his back and lay there for a moment.

@crucialstar @Lioness075 @Kharmin

Duik watched as the kitten slowly began to crawl out, staying squarely under Kitsune's legs. When it saw the hyena is waddled out a little faster, tripping over its too-big paws. When it opened its little pink mouth it sounded like a kitten. Duik's heart melted.

"Awww! You're such a cute little kitty!" He lifted a paw and placed it gently on the animal's head. Its front legs buckled under the added weight and it sank to the gound, bobbing up again when Duik stroked it.

@Kharmin @anyonewhowants

Just then a voice sounded over their com links.

"Team Beijing report! What is your status! Simon! Simon are you there?!" It was Amber, and it was hard to tell if she was angry or just frantically worried.

"We got data that the club was attacked by a mythic, what's going on?!"

@zCrookedz @anyonewhowants

The roar of the nian echoed across the room as it finally seemed to give in due to the combined effort of Luness, BB and everyone else shooting at it. The creature could not bear the unrelenting assault of the team and finally decided to flee - which gave everyone a moment of respite and an opportunity to get themselves together. Eos panted heavily as he felt exhaustion creeping over his old bones and he looked at Zoe. The girl stood there triumphantly, looking at the retreating figure of the monster, smiling. But as Eos observed her from close up he noticed something... she was trembling. Her hands and her feet were shaking like never before, despite her breath not being ragged and her calm exterior not giving away her true terror he knew what she was going through - and was truly impressed by this.

" Zoe... " he began " I... "

" We did it. " she said silently " We drove it away... it is over. " she smiled happily. Eos nodded and noticed how desperately did Alec look for Duik underneath the rubble and when he found it how emotionally stressed he was. Turning to Zoe he nodded.

" Rest for a moment, my child. " he said calmly " I am going to check up on Alec and Duik. "

" Sure... yeah... " she replied, staring at the fleeing beast, a boastful pride filling her soul as he saw the enigmatic shadow of the best fleeing into the night. Yet before anything of a celebration could have happened she realized that it was heading towards Xiao first and foremost... and her pulse started to rise again. Panic returned in her heart and she was not certain if she could muster enough courage to launch herself into the fray a second time against the mythical beast. As the creature knocked Xiao down her eyes widened in horror... a strange flashback came in her mind, similar shades doing similar battles... and she knew what the outcome will be.

" XIAO! " she screamed in fear as she saw the girl fall, despite being caught by others to negate the blast from the creature Zoe could stand idle no longer. She saw Alec rushing to her side as well and when she reached her and hearing Laohu's hopeful words for the girl to wake up she felt her eyes becoming... wetter...

" Come on... open your eyes! " she demanded, trying to keep her composure but she did a poor job at that. " Don't you dare to die on us! If you die I will kill you myself! " she said, kneeling down, her heart pounding faster and faster. It can not happen... not again... " Wake up... wake up... "

The sigh of relief which left her was something she had never experienced before. She watched how Alec theoretically confessed to her as she looked at the girl with angry eyes.

" You stupid agent! " she said, fighting with her tears " Why didn't you watch out for it? Why didn't you avoid it? " her voice trembled as she could hide her terror no longer " I swear to god if you ever do something like this again... " she raised her hand, preparing to slap the girl but instead she just clenched it into a fist as her legs finally gave away and she dropped on the floor, sitting next to the girl... and feeling some warm liquid pouring from her eyes.

@crucialstar @Lioness075 @Kharmin @SilverFlight

Eos caught the wind of fear but when the others created a safety net for Xiao to land on he got calmer. He saw that Zoe was not this composed and he could understand it.

" I am surprised you managed to come after all that happened... " he mumbled to himself, watching as the girl was now sitting next to the others, exhausted. He was frankly proud of the little ball of viciousness and with a gentle smile he turned his attention to Duik and the little friend he and Kitsune had made. It looked like quite an adorable little cat... but it looked kind of familiar in a sense though he could not explain why.

" I see that you are well, Duik, praise be. " he smiled as h turned to him and Kitsune " And who is this adorable little ball of fun? He looks... unique. "

@SilverFlight @Kharmin

Simon and Jimbo continued to lift until they heard Kitsune speak up and the little fox darted in along with Alec and Beth. The structure was pretty damn heavy, Simon could only hope that Duik had managed to find a safe pocket unter the DJ table or something so that this stuff didn't fall directly on top of him.

Finally after several minutes of digging Alec reemerged with the others with Duik in hand. Then he heard them say something about another creature in the rubble.

"Not to rush or anything......but this stuff ain't exactly light..."

Simon gritted a smile as the little creature came bounding out of the rubble and over towards Duik. Simon eyed the creature with surprised interest until Jimbo grunted at him and Simon realised he had let his attention wander yet again. He nodded to Jimbo, a bit apologetically.

"Everyone stand back."

Jimbo and Simon gave the structure one last heave once Kitsune and the others were clear and then backed away quickly from the mass of steel and debris. The pair tried to catch their breath as they looked from the scene with the new creature to the Nian disappearing out of the building. It looked like they had been able to survive this.

Simon breathed easy for a moment until he heard his comm click to life and Amber's voice came over. The sound of her voice made Simon smile as she tried to see what was going on. His breathing just t tiny bit labored from lifting the structure, Simon place his finger to his ear.

"Amber.....god am I glad to hear your voice."

He looked around, his eyes landing on Zoe and Alec huddled over Xiao laying where she had landed after her tussle with the Nian. He felt his blood go cold as he began to fear the worst. He went back on the comm, a bit more hectically.

"Strong, confirmed Mythic attack. It was a Nian, came out of nowhere! We need a medical team and an Evac ASAP. Agent Hui is injured."

When Raven ran up to join her, Leandra worriedly looked to her, as she had no idea what to do other than try to catch Xiao Hui when she fell.

Luckily, Raven had an idea and soon the pair were holding either ends of Raven's jacket.

"I really hope this works."

Soon, Leandra heard Xiao Hui falling and glanced up in time to see Luness do her best to slow Xiao Hui's fall just in time for Alec to join Leandra and Raven. With Alec's help, the trio caught Xiao Hui and slowly lowered her down to the ground.

The moment Xiao Hui was laying on the ground, Leandra let go of Raven's jacket and slumped to her knees before letting out her breath that she'd been subconsciously holding.

Listening to Alec speaking to Xiao Hui, Leandra furrowed her brows (yay, jealousy!) and simply glanced away in time to see Laohu favoring one of his paws.

Before she could say anything to him or usher him over so she could help, Zoe approached the small group and suddenly started berating Xiao Hui.

Instantly angered by this reaction after Xiao Hui had fallen from the top friggin' floor and nearly died, Leandra looked sharply at Zoe and widened her eyes in slight fear when she saw her raising her hand as if she were to slap Xiao Hui.

"Zoe, don't!"

Suddenly lurching forward, Leandra all but threw herself in front of Xiao Hui with a raised hand, but the slap never came.

Watching Zoe lower hand in a clenched fist instead, Leandra felt livid, as she spoke through gritted teeth, "Zoe, what the hell is wrong with you? Xiao Hui just nearly died and you wanted to slap her for it!?"

Clenching her own hands tightly into fists, Leandra then added in a somewhat calmer tone, "I don't care what you think about your own actions, Zoe, but you just almost made an unforgivable mistake."

Narrowing her eyes at Zoe for a moment, Leandra then shook her head before turning away from her and facing Xiao Hui once more, having now repositioned herself so she was kneeling at Xiao Hui's opposite side from where Alec was.

Leandra took a deep breath and then carefully looked over Xiao Hui from where she was kneeling. Watching her feebly attempt to sit up, Leandra lightly pressed down on Xiao Hui's shoulders while saying, "Hey, it's okay. You don't need to sit up, Xiao Hui. The Nian is gone for now. Rest."

Letting out a small sigh, Leandra then leaned to the side and carefully lifted Xiao Hui's shirt a bit, as she recalled seeing the Nian all but charge right into her.

Sure enough, Leandra quickly saw the intense bruising and Xiao Hui's feeble coughing had given away her injury to an extent. Letting Xiao Hui's shirt fall back down lightly, Leandra then said, "You've probably broken a rib or two, maybe even more, based on what I can see. It's likely that your broken ribs might've pierced one of your organs, too, but I haven't the faintest idea without the proper equipment. Honestly, you just need to lie still and wait for the medical team to get here. The less you move, the less damage you'll sustain."

Leaning back on her knees, Leandra wiped at her sweaty forehead and then glanced to the side to see Laohu still nearby.

"Laohu, come here. I can see you favoring that paw. Let me look at it and see what I can do."

Meanwhile, Luness hand landed near Xiao Hui and was staying near her head while giving off some warmth in an attempt to help Xiao Hui remain somewhat comfortable.

While she was at it, Luness suddenly recalled what Xiao Hui had hummed to Leandra when she'd hugged her before one of their debriefs before. With a small smile, Luness leaned in close to Xiao Hui's ear and then began humming the tune to her.

Manjano hadn't been able to do much to help, but luckily it seemed the others were able to quickly help Xiao Hui not die from her fall.

Hearing Falarion's excited reaction to Duik being alive and mostly okay, Manjano decided he should rejoin him for now and soon was at Falarion's side.

Glancing down at Duik, Manjano grimaced, as the hyena was most certainly not looking his best at the moment. It seemed this team couldn't manage going through even one mission without someone being seriously injured. Great.

Hearing Kitsune talking to something and then hearing Duik's reaction, Manjano glanced to the side to see...something that somewhat resembled a kitten. What in the world was that thing?

Meanwhile, Falarion was more than excited for some weird animal to be joining the team and lowered his head to the kitten's level before gingerly poking at it with one of his paws while saying, "You're weirdly cute, little guy. What's your name? Do you have a name? What are you? Part cat or something? Are you a mythic we've never heard of before?"

Shaking his head in amusement at Falarion's questions, Manjano kinda hoped his companion didn't scare off the little thing. It might be vital to their mission for all he knew.

Suddenly, Manjano remembered Beth's injuries and he turned on his heels to quickly join her side, as he gently took her shoulders and then guided her away from the rubble to a clear area on the stage. He then began to help her sit down while saying softly, "Beth, you need to rest now. Duik's going to be okay and even Xiao's going to be okay. Let yourself relax now, please."

Hearing loud yelling, Xiao Hui forced her eyes to open again, seeing Alec on the ground. When did he get there? Wasn't he with Duirk? Why? Xiao Hui wondered if he was okay, "A-alec. . ?" She croaked out, not knowing the words he had said to her, before turning towards Zoe. Giving her a faltered smile, she felt touched by her worries, knowing exactly why she had been yelling at her for her actions. She. . reminded her of her father. . in a sense, he always yelled at her whenever she managed to injure herself, it was his way of showing how worried he was. Comparing to how Zoe reacted, she could safely assume it was the same reaction, seeing that she, also, didn't know how to express herself easily. Preparing herself for a slap, Xiao Hui took a shallow breathe as Laohu looked onwards, knowing Zoe wouldn't as he stayed by Xiao Hui's side. However, seeing Zoe backing off and in such a vulnerable state, Xiao Hui wanted to reach out and wipe the tears from her eyes, but in her state. knew she shouldn't move. "T-thank you, Zoe. I should. ." she breathed in shallowly, wincing from the chest pain as her breathing became uneven, "have, next time, I'll . . be prepared. . promise. I'm sorry." She finished letting out a soft whisper, before Lea suddenly reached over her, protecting her frame from Zoe. Hearing Lea's concerns and the two misunderstanding each other, Xiao Hui made a slight whimper as she mentally mind-link Laohu as he nodded. Once Lea regained her position as she knelt by her side, Xiao Hui faced Lea, sending her another faltered smile before saying, "Lea. . thank you, for worrying and getting angry... for me." She said sincerely before Laohu spoke up, "Hui wanted me to be her messenger, so you guys can speak through me as she's having trouble speaking, at the moment." He said, clearing his throat, "She said, don't worry, Lea, Zoe wouldn't have harmed her, since she doesn't really know how to express herself, she reacts that way, perhaps, you can help her." Laohu spoke before he saw Lea assessing Xiao Hui's wounds. Hearing that she had bruises forming on her chest, perhaps a few broken ribs, and maybe a rib have pierced one of her organs, Laohu whimpered slightly, not liking that. He had felt the impact of Xiao Hui's pain, but it wasn't painful enough for him to be in the same condition. Xiao Hui looked at Lea, nodding in response as she gently reached over to rub Lea's hand, "Don't worry." She whispered softly, repeating herself, before Laohu spoke up, "Xiao Hui said that you two still have more to learn from each other, she isn't going away any time soon. Don't think you can get rid of her yet." As Lea asked Laohu to come over to him, seeing that she noticed he was favoring his right paw, Laohu nodded, limping over to her as he laid down still close enough to Xiao Hui. On the other hand, Xiao Hui laid there, as still as she could, but reached over to get Zoe's attention, whispering, "It's okay. . please don't be angry. ." Soon, with Luness by her, she felt more warmth radiating, as she felt a little more comfortable. However, once Luness hummed in her ear, the song she had hummed to Lea, tears welled around her eyes, as Xiao Hui waited for the medical team to come. The hum. . sounded exactly like how she sung it, but it was different. . reminding her of her mother.

Raven/Kitsune

The sprinklers above continued to rain down their fire suppressing concoction on those who remained in the club. A pungent and acrid stench wafted through the air as electronic circuits and wires popped and hissed in their valiant fight against the deluge but soon would be overcome by physics. The entire encounter with the nian had only lasted a few minutes at most. The fire department was still en route as they battled the traffic of the parties in the streets around the club's block.

As the others assembled around Xiao, Raven stepped back a pace and dropped her leather long coat. It had served its purpose, and more, and since she was soaked completely through it was of no further use. Her dark hair, made even blacker by the water, plastered to her head and neck and rested immobile along her shoulders and her smaller, lithe form was accentuated by the way her soaked clothing clung to her frame.

Raven glanced up, uncaring for the water that showered down onto her face and into her eyes, and regarded the torn access door in the ceiling through which their adversary had fled. Damn, she thought as she cursed their ill-luck for allowing the creature to escape. Whatever plan they should have had coming into the club certainly would not have accounted for the nian. We need to be better prepared the next time, she mused knowing that this would certainly not be the last unexpected mythic to appear.

She tore her gaze from the ceiling and glanced over to the crowd that had gathered around Duik. Kitsune was there, a messy, dirty water-logged, red furball along with ... some kind of cat? "Kit, what have you done now?" she said aloud to no one in particular. Raven shook her head and started toward her companion.

* * *

"Um, I don't think that's a cat," Kitsune offered to Duik who stroked their newly rescued creature. "Still, I couldn't just leave it under all of that mess." The fox leaned in for a closer inspection but the downpour from the sprinklers continued to dampen his sense of smell. Wires sparked and sputtered nearby. "Hey, maybe we should get out of here before we all get electrocuted?"

Beth breathed a sigh of relief when Kitsune located Duik. She would have preferred a safer way to pull him out, but she was not quick enough to correct it, and whats done is done. The reunion was heartwarming, and it seemed like they all took a moment to appreciate it. That is, except for the Nian and for Kitsune.

She was shocked when the fox turned back and emerged with another.. creature. It appeared to be feline, and it certainly sounded like it, but she had no doubt that it was something mythical. A thundering sound behind her distracted her, and she and Totus both watched as the Nian hit Xiao. Luckily, the team mobilize to save her, but Beth knew her injuries would need attention as soon as possible.

Totus was perched on top of the rubble pile, watching the situation, and Beth took several steps off of the pile. Now that the Nian was gone and they were all (relatively) safe, the weight of her pain hit her. Totus's eyes snapped to her, as she ducked her head, her curiosity about the little feline creature gone as suddenly as the thing had appeared.

For once, she was relieved to have someone tell her to take a break. She didnt protest as Manjano moved her away from the rubble to a clear space on the stage. In order to sit down, she had to take hold of both his forearms and lowered herself without bending her back.

"Let's not do that again," She said softly, glancing up at him with a grimace. Beth mentally moved her back up on the list of things to have looked at, but she wasnt sure if she should prioritize it over her ribs. She knew that he was probably thinking the same things that Totus usually did (why do you always have to put yourself in danger, why dont you take yourself out when injured, why are you so stubborn, blah blah blah), so she said cautiously, "But at least we got the intel and limited other injuries.. right?"

Totus watched the two of them from near Falarion, but for now, he trusted Manjano to look after Beth. She would want to know about this creature, so he stayed near it to learn what he could.

Barry was still too far away from the stage to do anything but watch Xiao fall. He gritted his teeth but kept running on. He heard a tarp flap out as Xiao made contact but nothing like bone to floor which was a welcomed silence. [well now.. Now we can get some peace.] He started to slow down to a jog as he assessed that, although pretty battered up, everyone was okay. As he walked up the stairs to the stage, he say Zoe raising a hand to a new unconscious Xiao. The hairs went up his neck but soon wilted when she lowered her hand in relief. Leandra was scolding her but he understood what Zoe was feeling. [Sometimes loved ones make you do stupid stuff. Especially when they could have been worse off.] He thought as a small smile managed to eek out. Seeing as there were many people around Xiao, Barry opted to check out Duik. He felt bad. If he were there maybe there wouldn't have been the initial scare.

Walking up to him, he noticed a small little creature. It was kinda cute in a way. Still, it was off putting thinking knowing there was still an unidentified creature around. He wasn't really sure why it was here but it seemed small enough to be a baby or something. Who knew? It was probably a mythic or some cat dressed up for the big night. Barry nodded at Duik who seemed to be holding up. He held out his finger limply to the creature hoping it would find him non threatening. Let them come to you rather than spooking it. For all he knew, it could breath fire.

BB raced down to Xiao as people were crowding around her. All yelling at each other and cradling her. It was funny to think about. They looked like a big family that were scared out of their minds.
Naw.. I'll let the babies be. She laughed to herself as she fluttered down to Barry. With a grand gasp, BB couldn't believe her eyes! OH MY GOD!! YOUR SO CuUTE! would you look at your little tail and, OH, those eyes! IT so adorable!! She sent blaring into Barry's ear. He swore, one of these days he was going to wake up deaf. That is what people need on the team. Deaf and mute. Can you talk? huh huh? such a cutie! She spoke in a more calming but still hyper tone.

Bael rushed over as soon as he was able to the cloud of the group. He had been out with the civilians, and when he had heard the crashing from inside, had tried to fight his way back. Cedar was beside him, mouth stuffed with bags.

"Okay. Okay." He closed his eyes a moment before looking around. "We have injuries. ...Xiao, yeah? Okay, I'll help her. Cedar, give me... That—" he grabbed something out of the Bear's mouth and moved to Xiao, trying to determine what exactly to do with her injuries and look them over. He hadn't even paid an ounce of attention to the strange little kitten yet. "It may be shy," he called over his shoulder thoughtfully. Then he turned back to Xiao, concerning himself fully with the girl's injuries. "There isn't anything I can do thet isn't gonna sting," he warned her. Then he called, "Barry, you're next," once more over his shoulder.

Cedar, meanwhile, dropped his supplies and, curiosity piqued, moved to the rubble and small animal. He flicked an ear and tilted his head, but stood back. It was his nature to be a bit shy with the beast and like Bael had suggested, it was possible it was, too. He looked around at the others. "You don't s'pose it's hurt?" He thought out loud, to no one in particular.

You could almost hear the relief in the silence over the com, nobody was dead. Amber's next words were noteceably more calm, though the urgency was still there.

"I've already dispatched a hospital team. They'll meet you outside."

@zCrookedz

Xiao opened her eyes, but didn't seem to hear what Alec had just said. With hindsight he was grateful for it. Getting slowly to his feet he thought about saying something to Zoe's outburst. The fact that she'd flown off the rails when Xiao had just been frightened out of her life and was porbably in a lot of pain had made him angry, but a soft word from Xiao made him shut his mouth.

"Raven's right. Its not safe here with the live wires. We need to get out."

Very carefully he knelt down and lifted Xiao gently into his arms, trying hard not to jar her ribs.

@crucialstar @Lioness075 @Kharmin @DawnAntalios

When the debris fell it scared the little white creature who shot forward, or at least would have if its tiny claws didn't have it run in place for a second. It shot out of control into Duik's sift side and after pulling its head free it blinked several times before noticing Falarion staring down.

"Nyyaa!" It squeaked and padded the wolf's nose with a tiny pink paw. Duik melted.

"Ooooowwwwrrrr." The hyena exclaimed, "cuteness overload!"

When Kitsune poked hs nose closer the cat stood on its hind legs and put both paws on the fox's face, sniffing and snuffling as it memorized his scent.

The it butted him gently in the eye, just like an affectionate kitten and began to purr.

At this point Duik got slowly to three feet, favoring his back leg.

"We are so keeping him."

When Barry approached Duik saluted him with a paw. "How's it B-man? Mini B?" He had been working on those nicknames all night, and just remembered them now.

The creature initially shied away from Barry, intimidated by either his size or the fact that he was human, but its curiosity soon won over and it wuffled his finger, then began to lick it with its sandpaper tongue.

"I think he likes you." Duik observed, flashing them all one of his signature grins.

From the way it moved and the seemingly infinite curiosity it certainly didn't look ijured at all.

"I saw the little guy before the lighting fell, dove on him to keep him safe, he looks ok to me Cedar, but when we get out of here, you guys should probably look him over, to be safe."

~^~^~

The hotel had been very accommodating, allowing the medical staff to treat the injuries on the premises. Of course the Watch had sent in some of their professionals and supplies as well, to help things along.

The morning was filled with light and Alec had gotten up early, determined at least today not to be woken up by Taylor Swift or the Spice Girls or whatever else Duik had felt the need to play when he woke up. As far as Alec knew the hyena was still passed out in their room, paws curled protectively about the new companion they had. He had changed and washed as soon as he was given the room. Now he stood in his regular outfit, a green vest and a crisp, white shirt. His cap placed firmly on his wild brown hair.

The hotel was massive and shaped like a long rectangle with a large courtyard at its center containing an oriental garden and a series of river-like swimming pools intertwining within it. The far side of the garden had the pool connecting and opening up into a wide basin.

Alec’s room was on the fourth floor and he watched the goings on from there. There were a few people already swimming, a hippopotamus and a capybara did laps with their partners while a horse watched the clock of a third person.

The halls of the hotel were all carpeted, even the open corridor on which Alec stood.

"Morning Alec!" Duik said in a singsong voice. The little creature was tripping its way behind him. “You been to see how Xiao’s doing?”

No.” Alec admitted and was ready for resistance, to his surprise he was given none. He had passed Xiao off to the Watch medical staff as soon as they had arrived. They had the gear to make a difference, he was just a vet.

Ooooh! I wanna check out the pool!” Duik exclaimed happily, putting his forepaws on the banister and taking in the view. “Come on! Let’s go find the others!

Alec sighed and followed Duik as he bounded down the hallway to the elevator.

Take it easy Duik, don’t jump around so much, you’re still hurt, remember?” Alec nonchalantly scooped up the kitten into his arms and it sat there contentedly as they made their way to the first floor.

Oh you worry too much.” Duik shot back.

They were both pleased to find a buffet had been set up outside just by the pool. Duik made his partner collect all the choice bits of dried meat and put them into a bowl for him. Alec then sat back in a chair carefully, hand feeding the creature little pieces of ham, which it snapped up with happy trills and a lot of lip smacking. He had to admit the thing was pretty cute, and it hadn’t tried to assassinate him as he slept that night. Though the other members of the team were right…this was no cat.

Once they moved to the hotel and both Xiao and Beth were given the medical attention they needed, the twins and their companions all dragged their feet, paws, and glided about lazily, as they all but fell onto their beds in their hotel rooms after taking well-deserved showers.

In the morning, Leandra shuffled out of her room with Luness on her shoulder and nodding off already.

Feeling much like a zombie, and probably looking like one, Leandra had, at least, changed into some comfortable jeans and a tank top that featured the characters from The Lion King 2. Having not wanted to fix up her hair, she'd thrown on some khaki-colored beanie to help her avoid having to fix her hair at all. As it were, frizzy ends stuck out on either side of her head now.

After taking the elevator down to the pool area, where other early birds seemed to already be gathering, Leandra then walked out to see Duik engulfing some breakfast nearby. Looking past him, she then saw Alec feeding that weird cat-like thing they'd found last night at the club. From what she'd heard about it from Falarion while he'd still been bouncing about last night, the thing didn't appear to be able to communicate with anyone.

Letting out a long yawn and stretching a bit, Leandra then gathered some mixed breakfast foods on her plate and then made a second one filled to the brim with bacon for Luness. Seeing the growing mound of bacon for her, Luness churred happily and rubbed her head against Luness' cheek before blinking sleepily.

Having forgotten to put on shoes (zombie-mode activated...), Leandra decided to sit at the edge of the pool, wisely staying away from the swimming companions so she didn't get splashed.

With her feet in the cool water, Leandra happily began eating some watermelon she'd found while Luness hopped down from her shoulder and began eating the bacon.

Blinking after eating a few bites, Leandra then realized she hadn't greeted Alec or Duik, or that 'cat', and so she turned briefly and waved at Alec and Duik before saying with a yawn, "Good mornin', Alec, Duik, and cat...thing."

@SilverFlight

Manjano had woken up earlier than the others as per usual for himself and had left Falarion to get his rest since the maned wolf had worn himself out yesterday.

Standing uncertainly just outside of Beth's room (he knew where it was since he'd insisted on escorting her all the way to it after the medical staff had looked her over), Manjano hesitantly held up his fist to knock and then lowered it again, indecision more than clear on his face.

Suddenly, Falarion appeared at Manjano's side and excitedly barked, "Manjano! They have a buffet downstairs, I can smell bacon! Come on! Food!"

Wagging his tail like crazy, Falarion danced about while Manjano shook his head in amusement and then gestured towards Beth's door.

"Ugh, fine. Go say hi to your girlfriend. I'm getting some bacon."

Blushing slightly at the proclamation of Beth being his girlfriend, Manjano gave Falarion a mock glare, but the maned wolf had already bounded away, making a beeline for the buffet downstairs.

Sighing, Manjano turned back to Beth's door and knocked on it, inwardly hoping neither Beth nor Totus had heard what Falarion had just said.

@Flutterby

Falarion sprinted out of the hotel into the pool area in time to see the wonderful buffet...only to skid right past it on the wet tile.

Letting out a surprised yelp, Falarion scrambled frantically on the tile to stop himself, but he couldn't and soon went sliding right into the pool headfirst.

Luckily, he landed far enough away from Leandra to not splash her.

Laughing at Falarion's entrance, Leandra then watched as the now soaking wet maned wolf swam to the pool entrance where animals could walk out instead of trying to climb out.

Once he'd exited the pool, Falarion shook himself mostly dry and then made a surprised expression when his fur all puffed up.

Giggling now, Leandra waved Falarion over and he trotted to her with a grin while she gave him some of her bacon.

"Quite the entrance there, Falarion."

Wagging his tail with a grin, Falarion responded with bacon in his mouth, "Hey, it got me some bacon...so clearly it was a great mistake to make!"

"So, that's how you rate your performance?" Raven asked flatly. It was more of a statement than a question and Kitsune visibly blanched at the reprimand.

Raven kept her eyes straight ahead with her hands clasped behind her back as the antics around the courtyard pool played out in the morning. She stood erect with her feet shoulder-width apart, back straight and shoulders pulled back in a standard, practiced military stance. She was dressed in her usual clothes: the brown combination vest and long coat defiant against the light, morning breeze that gently circled the courtyard and carried the scents of the freshly made breakfast that awaited the hotel's residents on the buffet nearby. Raven's worn and trusted pistols rested easily in their holsters and even if the perception of her posture was that she was stern and tense, the veteran was actually calm and composed, almost comfortable in her present position.

They stood on the ground floor beneath the cover of one of the walkways that enclosed the courtyard along the second floor above them. The morning sunlight hadn't yet mastered the shadows in which they were partly concealed. Kitsune's ears swiveled and twitched nervously as he divided his attention from the patrons assembling for breakfast and his stoic captain/companion. His presence at her side had only been acknowledged when she had tersely asked him to summarize the events of the evening in the club.

Kitsune reviewed the events in his mind for the umpteenth time as he looked for the flaws that he knew Raven would address. He had acted rashly, recklessly in her opinion, and should not have been as far removed from her as he had been. His heroic rescue of Duik was quashed as impetuous; he could have likewise become ensnared and then the crew would have had to rescue them both. Kitsune argued that foxes lived in dens and that he was completely confident in his ability to ferret himself in and rescue the hyena, although at the time Kitsune did have his doubts. The structure and wiring that had been Duik's trap was much more hazardous than any simple den, but Kitsune knew that time had not been on their side. Besides, rescuing Duik also rescued the new ... whatever it was.

That had been another strike against him. Raven admonished him for risking his life, again, to save the cat-creature without even knowing if it were hostile. Kitsune told Raven that it had snuggled him and purred, to which she replied that most prey is easily hypnotized by their predators just before they're eaten.

Kitsune had a great quote to offer in rebuttal ("A man who trusts nobody is apt to be the kind of man nobody trusts." -- Harold MacMillan), but he quickly thought better of it and let the point go un-answered. To be honest, Kitsune couldn't have left that cat-creature in a dangerous place any more than Duik. It had to be rescued and Kitsune had been the only one available at the time who could perform the task.

Which brought him to Raven's final point: he had been too separated from her during the entire encounter. Yes, she did send him after the glasses and she did commend him for getting them to Jimbo and Manjano who had been outside of the venue. Once accomplished, however, he should have returned to her and not gallivanted around like some self-possessed hero. Kitsune looked down as his tail flopped and ears drooped. He was never going to make it as Raven's companion; he was sure that she would ask for a replacement.

* * *

Raven noticed Kitsune's deflating at the edge of her vision. He had been chastised enough, for now. Had he been one of her company during the war he would have been placed on report and then assigned some of the worst camp duties that she could find. If they were to truly be a team, then the fox would need to learn respect and discipline and that meant following orders and being where he's supposed to be when he's supposed to be there.

Raven admitted to herself that Kitsune's heroics were quite extraordinary given the circumstances at the time. Without hesitation, he had vaulted himself into a dangerous situation to save one of their crew and also retrieve their new-found cat. Or whatever it was.

She refocused her attention on the courtyard, buffet and swimming pool. Duik seemed not too worse for the experience and Falarion's antics upon arrival tugged a slight grin against Raven's otherwise stony facade. Leandra, Alec (with the new cat) and the others seemed fairly well in tune with the company as a whole – a company into which Raven and Kitsune had been thrust, possibly disrupting whatever synergy existed prior to their assignment to it.

As usual, ever since her discharge from the army, Raven was an outsider. She took in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. Acceptance would come. Someday. Maybe.

"Go on," she said to Kitsune with a nod toward the buffet. The fox looked up at her and his ears perked. There was hope in his small eyes; hope that things would get better between them and hope that they would finally find others that would accept them. Raven dismissed the emotion reflected in Kitsune's eyes. That kind of hope was folly.

Kitsune hesitated and then took a few tentative steps out of the shadows. He looked back at his companion. "If you're looking for an invitation..." Raven said and then let the sentence drop. "Just don't gorge yourself or you'll be worth even less should something happen."

"Do you honestly believe us to be in danger here?" Kitsune asked incredulously.

"Kit, I always believe we're in danger," she replied. "It's what's kept me alive so far. Go. Enjoy your friends and your breakfast."

"What about you?"

But Kitsune's question was met with detached silence. His heart hung heavy as he turned away from Raven and slowly made his way across the area. With a deep sigh, he suppressed his inner turmoil and put on a brave face to meet the others. It wouldn't do for them to see the conflict inside and he would do his damnedest not to show it.

After all, he is such the charmer.

Zoe's face started to radiate happiness when Xiao opened her eyes and whispered to her and everyone around. Relief and joy filled her unlike any before and she swelled in happiness, her tears still flowing like river. She was so entranced by the words of Hui that she did not even recognize what the others around her were saying... Leandra was saying something directed at her probably, Laohu tried to speak in a calm voice and Hui was just generally trying to reply to everyone around her. She was in a bliss, a safe haven knowing that she was all right.

She was pulled out of this complete splendor when Leandra inspected Xiao from close up and diagnosed her with few broken ribs. Indeed she seemed to be injured and Zoe was positive that she would need a lot of medical assistance. She dried up her tears finally as she nodded at her.

" Don't worry, you will be fine. " she whispered with relief, looking over her face calmly " You made us worry about you too much, be careful next time! " her attention turning to Alec she nodded at him as well " Please keep her safe. At all cost. "

With that she watched how they escorted the heroic girl away and she sighed in relief once more. Glancing over to the others she searched for Eos and decided to join up with the elder stag to see what he was looking at.

Eos looked at the little furball as it started to make friends with everyone. He was quite amused by this cat-looking strange animal but he could not understand what kind of creature it was anyway. It's appearance did not match anything he had seen in the past and he was a bit worried about what kind of animal were they meddling with - but his doubts faded away when he saw Zoe approach and he smiled.

" I am proud of you, you did not burst out in rage. "

" Say what? " Zoe asked, confused. It was then when the stag understood what happened and instead he let out a laugh and walked towards the exit, leaving the girl utterly baffled about his reaction. Crossing her arms she frowned as she looked at the small group hugging and laughing at the small creature - something she did not really care about right now, not after this fight.

" We all have our demons... " she whispered a she finally followed Eos outside.

@SilverFlight

-----

Eos was still sleeping after the exhausting night when Zoe began to sneak out from her room. It was early in the morning, the first rays of the crimson dawn painted the dark night sky in a purple hue and woke up all the slumbering birds with it. Zoe sat on the chair she prepared on the balcony as she listened to the symphony of these little animals - she felt at peace, the dark worries and nightmares expunging from her heart as she was relaxing... and thinking.

She was still baffled how fast could she react when the Nian attacked Eos. The monstrosity - though it was not a perfect replica of it - looked very similar to the monster which tore her life apart few years ago. Though that incident was not in china it still looked very similar in its features and the moment she saw this beast she felt the past overwhelming her, paralyzing her entire body. She looked at her palm which was a bit bruised - that was the tiny injury she suffered when Barry knocked her out of harm's way... she had to thank the boy for his quick thinking, it could have been much worse than that.

Finally seeing the sun coming up she heard silent steps behind her.

" Observing the sunrise as always. " the old stag smiled " It seems some things never change. "

" At least something remains constant then. " the girl spoke with an uncertain voice " At least some habits should stay if everything else is turned upside down in your life you know. "

Eos laid down next to her on the floor.

" The ice is melting then I assume? " he asked with a sly smile but Zoe did not reply at first. She just stared at the horizon with almost a petrified face, scouring the distance with her eyes vigilantly.

" This is different. Entirely different. " she concluded finally when she spoke " I... we were never in an environment close to this, let alone in a family. This feels confusing... I don't know how to react most of the times. " she sighed and the stag cuddled with her briefly.

" What you did for Xiao was actually quite an interesting turn of events. You should have seen Alec's face when you wanted to slap the poor girl, i could have sworn that he was going to kill you for that. "

Zoe let a sardonic smile sit on her face.

" I wanted to slap her so hard for scaring us... but in reality I was just afraid of... of... "

" Losing someone again? "

She looked at the stag with a firm expression and Eos expected her to yell at him for his audacity. But instead she just nodded.

" Yes. " she said finally as she pushed herself up in a standing position " I think I shall go and explore the hotel for a bit. You coming, Furball? "

" Nay, I shall rest here for a bit. Go ahead. " said Eos and the girl nodded at him, proceeding into the building. Though she was hungry she was uncertain where the others were in this morning. As she walked she spotted one of the new girls... Raven was her name if she recalled it correctly. She helped Xiao when she had her fall so she already reserved a very grateful spot for the girl in her heart... though that did not mean that she would know how to properly interact with someone. Finally mustering enough courage she walked up to her, waving at the girl.

" Hey, how you doing? " she asked, trying to act as friendly as possible " Your skills were quite impressive at the mission and... well you were quite a quick thinker for reacting so quickly when the tragedy would have happened. You are an excellent soldier in my book. "

She realized that the compliment she had made went completely off the rails so doing a quick mental facepalm she changed tactics and tried to chat.

" So uh... Raven. Any place you headed to? I mean... there is a lot to discover here and... uh... " she shook her head, this was really hard. " Damn this thing, fine I will just say it - do you want to go and search for the others by any chance? I wouldn't mind to check on them. For safety measures of course. "

Raven glanced over as the blonde, young woman, Zoe, made her way across the courtyard to where she was standing. She maintained her militaristic posture as she watched Kitsune make his way to the assembly by the pool. Internally, she wondered what Zoe could possibly want.

She listened as Zoe complimented her actions at the club. "My skills were shit," Raven said with the same flat tone she had taken with Kitsune earlier. "We're lucky that only a few civilians were killed; it should have been much worse."

Mentally, Raven snorted at Zoe's praise of being an excellent soldier. An excellent soldier would not have entered the club without a viable plan, an alternative plan and at least two, clear methods to escape. Instead, there had been no plan, no alternative plan and no clear methods to escape.

Raven realized that Zoe was trying to make nice but in her own, awkward way. Raven's visage softened and she relaxed her posture. "I'm sorry, Zoe," Raven said as her deep, brown eyes settled on the blonde. "Forgive me, this group and the missions are still new to me."

She raked her fingers through her straight hair, then crossed her arms over her chest as she considered Zoe's suggestion. Perhaps the other woman was as uncomfortable as she herself was when it came to this group? Raven didn't need Kitsune's senses to realize that Zoe seemed nervous, or even apprehensive, about this brief exchange between them and Raven knew that her own personality probably wasn't making it any easier. Raven offered a brief, uncharacteristic smile to Zoe in an attempt to ease the woman's concerns. "That's not such a bad idea, Zoe," she replied. "We could check on Xiao's condition and perhaps see if there is anything that we could bring her."

With a brief gesture, Raven offered Zoe to join her as they walked to the make-shift infirmary at the hotel. She cast a quick glance toward Kitsune, but the fox had already started to gorge himself on breakfast – exactly as he was instructed not to do. Raven sighed. She would lecture him later; he deserved a break for his deeds last night and if she came down on him too hard, too often, then their pairing would never fully be realized.

"I only did what I had been trained to do when I was Army," Raven continued as she returned to Zoe's earlier compliments as they headed toward the elevator. She forced the memories of her last tour back down in the recesses of her mind before she continued. "From my early observations of this team, they take too long to accomplish their goal. It's ... difficult ... for me to find my place with them."

She turned her head toward Zoe while they waited for the elevator. "How do you manage it?" she asked. "You've been with them for a while, no? Any insights you might be able to share?"

The rest of the night seemed to pass by in a blur to Simon. He watched as the med team was on scene within moments after Ambers last comm transmission. After, everyone was loaded and whisked away towards the hotel that they had first arrived at. Simon was not injured, and from what he could tell Jimbo wasn't either. He kept the tablet tucked into his shirt until he arrived at the hotel and he was able to take it out. It did not seem to have sustained any damage from the water, from best he could tell. But he knew it needed to get to someone who could access the information quickly. But that would have to wait until the morning.

Unfortunately, after Simon was out of his fancy clothes and back into his normal attire, sleep did not come to him. He lay awake in the bed, staring at the ceiling replaying the events in his head over and over until about 3 in the morning. When it was completely obvious to him he was not going to get sleep, Simon made his way to the hotels fitness center. It wasn't anything to sneeze at, given the amount The Watches fitness center offered, but it at least had the essentials.

Simon made his way over to the bench and began to slide weights onto the bar. His mind continued to play through the events of what happened. The Nian was unpredictable, but Simon was not new to unpredictable mission complications. What could have been prevented was the meeting with Marie-Lynn. So much about it rubbed him the wrong way. He kept comparing how it was handled to missions in the past. Strang had always been good at giving orders, assigning people jobs and making sure they were followed through to the letter. Simon hadn't done any of those things, and couldn't help but feel as if his first mission a field command had been sour because of it.

Before Simon knew it, the clock in the center changed to 7:00 and Simon had loaded the bar with as many weights as it could hold. As he lifted the bar over his head, the lumbering shape of Jimbo's furry head came into view in the spotter's position.

"Couldn't sleep?"

Simon exhaled through his mouth as he pushed the bar again.

"Nope, too much to think about."

Jimbo watched as the bar lifted and fell in a decent rhythm. He was used to this, it was one of the two ways Simon thought about stuff. Since there were no cars to work on, he knew he was going to find him here. Finally, Simon lifted the bar and held it over his face. Jimbo guided the bar into the arms.

"Last night was crazy huh? Did you see that thing that Alec and Duik brought back? Got any ideas....."

Jimbo didn't get to finish his sentence, Simon lifted himself off the bench and reached for a towel to wipe his face with before cutting him off.

"Last night was a disaster Jim. I just know Darcy is back at HQ reviewing the situation. I give it 2 hours before he waltz in here and reassigns someone else to command."

Jimbo became confused, he had never thought Simon would care so much about this kind of thing before. By all accounts, the mission had been a success. The teams got the information they needed, and even though they had an unexpected guest, everyone survived.

"Simon? What are you talking about? We got the things we needed? No one could have seen that Nian thing coming in and busting up the party."

Simon shot Jimbo look that made Jimbo stop.

"Just like the Merlion and yet, here we are again. Same situation, and we could have had the same results if we hadn't gotten lucky Jimbo. Let's face it Jim, that's all we've got. Luck."

Simon did not feel like having this conversation, he threw the towel over his shoulder and headed for the exit of the fitness center. Jimbo looked from Simon to the bench and the scowled at him.

"SIMON!! Get back here and clean this up."

But he was already out of the door, leaving Jimbo with his bench to take care of. Jimbo glared out after his brother as he began to lift weights from the bar.

Simon wandered out into the lobby, his gym shorts and a towel over his shoulder as he headed towards the pool to cool off a bit. Not paying attention to a few wide eyes he received from folks in the lobby, Simon pushed open the door to the pool and was met with a pair of familiar faces he nearly ran into not paying attention.

"Jesus, sorry about that Zoe. Raven. Run into a wall if I wasn't paying attention."

Simon looked up towards the pool at the buffet that had been provided. It looked good, and Simon was actually hungry after the long workout. He looked back to Zoe and Raven who seemed to be secluding themselves from the others and merely watching. Zoe made some sense, he had been teammates that it didn't seem to out of the ordinary. Raven however, he had only read her dossier before the mission. Trying to shake the mornings unpleasant thoughts Simon smiled to the two of them and grabbed hold of the towel around his neck and pulled on it as he watched Alec feed the newest member they had acquired.

"Weird little critter isn't it? Looks like something straight out of a cartoon.

Zoe listened intently as the girl spoke. She found it pretty curious how strict she was on herself... it was something very familiar she could relate to herself - in fact she was almost sure that few years ago she would have berated the entire team for allowing something this unexpected to almost spoil the mission for them. It seemed that Raven shared this kind of mentality with her - and now she was curious whether she will be influenced by everyone else like she has been.

" You are too hard on yourself. " she said with a sardonic smile " True, our preparation level was surely not the highest - but I am certain that over the missions you will learn that this group mostly succeeds when improvising of certain things is required. " she looked around tentatively, watching the others. She turned her attention back to Raven and was frankly surprised when she actually apologized and she tilted her head briefly before recognizing that strange, forced smile on Raven's expression that she herself often used in the past. It was almost as if she was looking at a mirror from ages past, as she inspected the curious girl a strange feeling of familiarity filled her heart... it was something she felt when she was with Eos and so far she only felt this with her companion...

She felt a kindred bond between the two of them forming ever so slowly. She quickly chased away these thoughts, it was true that she felt a different connection between her and the others but she did not want to be enthralled by false illusions. Still... somehow around her she felt a familiar, comforting aura, one which she had grown used to back in the past - and it allowed her to be more at ease.

" No need to apologize for anything, Raven. " she said, bowing before the girl respectfully " In fact I should be the one actually thanking you for saving Xiao. It is thanks to your quick thinking in part that she survived with nothing more than some broken ribs. I would not want to imagine what would have happened if you would have not hurried there to help her. I wish to express my gratitude on her behalf as well."

She stopped for a moment as she realized how much did she praise Raven for her action - and how did she managed to lose her objective tone which she strove to keep up. Though she knew that keeping an objective opinion in matters like this was very difficult she still wanted to keep to her code as being professional first and only then a friend - but truth be told this mentality of hers got weaker and weaker the longer she was with these people...

" Excellent. Let us be off then. " she commented upon hearing Raven willing to explore - even better when she mentioned that they would pay a visit to Xiao her face brightened up even more. As they walked across the courtyard and Raven started to speak about her past in the army the picture became clearer for Zoe. It was now evident how could she have been so disciplined and so efficiency oriented - virtues which were well regarded in an army.

" It feels good to have others at our side who are well trained in the art of combat. " she commented " This team - as you may have noticed - lacks proper training, well most of them anyway. Some, like Simon, were indeed working for the Watch for an extended period of time and I myself also enjoy the luxury of being trained in the art of war. " she sighed " But here it feels like we need to start training from scratch - though they have improved over the last three weeks prior to this mission they have still lot to learn. "

As they arrived to the elevator she looked at Raven with a smile.

" You know when I first joined this... rather unique bunch of agents I was skeptical. Most of them seemed to be... privates, untrained soldiers unfit for dangerous missions like these... yet... "

She closed her eyes momentarily, recollecting her memory about the previous missions.

" They are unique for a reason, their skills are many and we differ in great many things... but they, we, band together as a family. And we never let any harm come to anyone else... we look after each other. " she smiled warmly at Raven and then realized what she was talking about. She blushed and immediately faceplamed again. So much about impressing Raven with her professional attitude...

" Look, if you tell anyone that I was this sappy I will... "

She was interrupted by a familiar voice as Simon suddenly bumped into them. She took a step back in surprise and was a bit anxious as the great man entered the room. It was true that she has talked to him before but she was still uncertain whether they were on good terms... after all her first entrance still reverberated in her mind like an echo which would never cease to scream.

" Morning, Simon. " she replied with a forced neutral tone, turning to Raven briefly. Was she now to... show a bond between her and her team mate? Was she now to encourage her new found partner to ease into a conversation with Simon? She was torn between decisions, if anyone then she was probably the worst person to ask about things like these... but luckily Simon saved the awkward moment when he brought up their new "friend". Zoe's eyes narrowed.

" I don't know what to think about that... thing. " she said, not concealing her suspicion and bad feelings " It may be but a cub or whatever it is but it might still mean trouble... we know not where it came from, how did it get there and most importantly whether it is being tracked via a chip or anything. In my opinion it was folly to bring it here... "

Looking at Raven once more she realized that she was not doing the group justice. She sighed and frowned, trying to convert her harsh judgment into a more acceptable one.

" But as long as we are careful it should not cause any havoc... I hope. "

Now that they were standing there in silence she felt unease creeping over her again... she felt compelled to talk to break out of this awkward silence, it was driving her crazy... this is why she preferred to be alone in solitude.

" So... " she started, looking at the group, specifically at Simon " We were just about to visit Xiao and bring her something so that she would feel better... any idea what we should get her? "

Barry and BB smiled as the little creature licked his finger. It felt so strange but it was pleasant to know it wasn't feeling threatened. Soon after, the Watch picked them up and took them back to the hotel. Barry got his hand looked at but was deemed clean and well closed thanks to Leandra. It would leave a scar that is for sure. There was no harm though. He was just being stupid and didn't see where his hands were landing. It felt weird to close it so he decided to just let it heal for now. News was that there would be no damage, nerve or bone wise. That was pleasant to hear. He enjoyed using his hand.

It was a long night but Barry managed to rest and BB went into a torpor. He hadn't the slightest clue of what happens during missions, but if it was anything like that battle, he was in it for the long haul. He wasn't scared or discouraged in the slightest, it was just unexpected. Next time he should be ready for what ever is thrown at the group. After a few hours, he heard faint humming. Slowly opening his eyes, it reviled BB fluttering over his head while she hummed. Seeing that he was now waking up, she could be much louder. Finally! Geez B, I've been waiting hours for you to wake. Have you seen this place! It's so nice and pretty. Like, see that pillow there? I've been trying to figure out what it says for the longest time! Barry looked at her with a questioning look. Of course she couldn't read it, neither of them knew the language in the first place. What? Can you blame a girl for trying to learn? Man Barry, it would do you some good to learn a language! Speaking of... Sign "Good morning BB you amazing friend that keeps me on track with learning all of these hand movements." Barry swung his legs off the side of the bed. He stretched his hands and fingers then proceeded to sign somewhat sloppy. Fine! I'll give you that one since your hand is busted for a while. Now, let's go eat! She proceeded to fly off until she got to the door. She had been trapped here all night. Bar- The shower turned on and BB had to wait a little longer.

After a nice wash, they made their way down to the Buffet where some others were hanging out. Barry shuffled to the food and got a plate full of Fruit and a cup of bitter tea. He went to sit down at a table before he took out a bottle for BB to drink. [
I should get a dwarf tree before we leave. I could go for one of them.] He thought to himself with a small smile. It would look nice in his little room.

Too hard on herself? During her deployment, if she wasn't hard on herself, people died. Hell, people died last night, granted that it was through no fault of the Watch. Their actions, uncontrolled as they were, maybe saved lives when it was all said and done. Even Kitsune had saved a life that no one knew was there.

Raven started to retort, but then thought better of it. Save your vitriol for the fox, she said to herself. You're not in the army anymore; you need to figure out how to work with these people.

Zoe's bow took her off-guard, which didn't happen that often. The acknowledgement for her quick actions that probably saved Xiao from even more serious harm was genuine and Raven's demeanor eased a bit more. "Yes, well, um ... if anyone should be thanking me, it ought to be her," Raven said. "What was she doing up in the rafters in the first place? She was damn lucky I was able to get there in time."

The scene replayed in a flash in Raven's mind. The nian, cowered and pressed back by their assault and then it's flight through the roof. Raven still pictured Xiao's predicament and recalled how she and Leandra and Alec braced her fall with nothing more than Raven's leather long coat. It hearkened back to the theater in the Middle East where everyone under her command looked after each other and, for a moment, Raven thought that this Watch shared a similar bond.

She shuddered at the memory and wrapped her arms around herself as if to dispel the chill that the memories so distant recalled through her body. So much loss with such depravity that the photos of the event that were brought back to headquarters tempted even the strongest of stomachs to heave. Still, today, the smell of blood and defecation from the corpses lingered fresh in Raven's memory despite her efforts and the efforts of several military psychologists. Joining the Watch was someone's bright idea to get her mind off of her past. Linking her with Kitsune at such an older age was a risk and so far, Raven wasn't sure that it had been worth it.

Kitsune tried, he really tried, and Raven knew it but her personality rebelled against the change and the memories of her unit. The sadistic way that they had been tortured and killed burned her deep to the core. Fox companion or no, Raven was scarred in a way that nothing would heal.

Raven turned her head and looked away for a moment as she fought to regain her composure. When she turned back, she relaxed the grip on her own arms and her aura was all business, as usual. The memories had been relegated back to the darker recesses of her mind where she fought every waking hour to keep them in check. Zoe had been saying something and in the throes of her daymare, Raven missed it. Something about training and the lack of it.

Zoe echoed Raven's earlier summation when she termed the group as a family. Clearly, Zoe took some level of pride in the Watch and her place within it – a place that Raven and Kitsune hadn't yet had the luxury to discover. She waved away the blonde's concern just as the large man, Simon, blustered through them.

Raven scowled at his abrupt entrance but then forced herself to relax. He hadn't intended to nearly bowl them over. He ... well, he stank. Simon was covered in sweat from what clearly had been an overly long workout, one which he seemed proud to have accomplished. Raven stood back a pace and wrinkled her nose.

She followed his gaze toward the new cat-creature that seemed quite affectionate with Alec. "He shouldn't get so attached to it," she muttered dryly. "If that thing turns out to be dangerous somehow, it will make someone's decision that much more difficult." She turned back to the duo. "I agree with Zoe," she added. "It was folly to bring it back here and not quarantine it."

The doors to the elevator whisked open and a few other hotel patrons exited to the courtyard as they tried to avert their eyes from the three of them. Raven placed her arm in the elevator to hold the doors. "I'm sure Simon will bring her something," she said to Zoe. "Shall we go on ahead, then?"

Simon let his eyes fixate on the creature in Alec's lap momentarily. He had not thought about the creature being some sort of way of tracking the group. Could it be that their enemy was taking advantage of The Watch's good nature and willingness to help with this creature? The more Simon thought about it, the more he began to realise that Zoe and Raven could be right. He sighed before turning back to the ladies and he noticed Raven making a bit of a face at him. What in the world was up with her? Before he could ask however she ushered Zoe into the elevator and mentioned to Simon about Xiao. Simon had not seen her since they arrived back at the hotel. It probably would not be a bad idea to go and check on her next time he was heading towards where she was.

Before Zoe ran off with Raven, he cleared his throat and attempted to try and make what followed less awkward.

"Oh, uh. Zoe. Before I forget. Thanks. For last night I mean. Last night was kind of, a disaster. You, Leandra, and Beth's quick thinking really helped with Marie-Lynn. Even it was kind of........weird. You three were great. Really pulled my ass out of a fire."

He smiled at Zoe and nodded to the pair as he backed away from the elevator. One down, two to go.

Simon headed turned back towards the pool doors and headed out into the morning sun. It felt warm and pleasing on his shirtless torso and the cool clear waters of the pool looked very nice and inviting. He glanced over to the others who were enjoying the sunshine and saw Leandra feeding Falarion. Now was as good a time as any to get the apologies over with for last night's "performance".

He smiled as he made his way over towards the group, seeing that Berry had also joined. The others would make this a bit more awkward for Simon, but it had to be done. He waved to the group as he approached.

"Morning, everyone."

Before he could go to much more into a proper greeting. He heard a noise that sounded like a door banging open and something big lumbering out. He turned just in the nick of time to see the big bulky form of Jimbo lumbering on three limbs out of the doors with something round in his hands. Simon's eyes went wide as Jimbo lifted the arm with the circular like object and hurled it straight at him. The 25lb. free weight was easily snatched out of the air by Simon as he flew at his chest. However, he did not take into account where his footing was and suddenly found himself falling sideways until he was met by the cold splash of the pools waters. Jimbo smirked as he lumbered over towards where the group was.

"I am not your maid Simon. Clean you bench when your done with it."

Jimbo smiled at the rest of the group, trying to play off the episode as if it were just a normal thing.

Beth gratefully went with the med team, letting them put her onto a stretcher for transport with no protest. Totus left the rubble and settled next to her for the ride, hiding his concern with a blank expression.

The med team did a lot for her, most of which she didnt understand or couldnt remember, but before long, she was settled into a soft hotel bed with Totus perching nearby.

The next morning, Totus watched the sunrise from the window. This was perhaps the second time that Beth had not been awake before the sun in all the time he had known her. But she had been put on some medications that had wiped her out, and she had yet to stir from in bed. He glanced back at her, watching for a long moment and counting her breaths. The owl worried deeply about the injuries she had sustained recently. Sure, it was part of the job, but he seeing her in pain, and imagining how it could have been worse, was paling his feathers. He studied the sky for a long while, and eventually the sound of the other team members stirring reached his sensitive ears. Beth would want to be with them, but it was better for her to sleep.

Totus held that opinion, until two familiar voices sounded directly outside the door. Falarion and Manjano had a short exchange, which ended in Manjano knocking on the door. Totus flew over and pushed the handle down, letting the door swing open. He landed on the nearby dresser and gave a nod in greeting.

"She's been sleeping, I didnt have the heart to wake her yet, but Im sure she would like to join you, and the team, for breakfast." Totus said softly, indicating Beth with a wing.

Beth was curled up on one side of the bed, with her arms cuddling one of the extra pillows to her chest. She was wearing what appeared to be some male's blue sweatshirt that read "Tiger's Baseball" across the front in orange lettering over a pair of running shorts. It was obvious that she had started out snuggled under the blankets, but had kicked them off at some point, as they were tossed across the bed. There were bandages visible on her palms, and a bump on her forehead, but otherwise there didnt seem to be a sign of her injuries.

Beth stirred at the sound of voices, and tried to stretch out, but she stopped suddenly with a grimace. She opened her eyes, surprised to find Manjano standing just inside her room, and gave him a sleepy, albeit pained, smile.

"Oh.. hey, stranger." She murmured, unwrapping her arms from the pillow and very slowly starting to sit up and get out of bed.

Maia Asim

"You missed it again."

Maia groaned, rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and yawned powerfully before rolling over in her hotel bed. One foot thumped Ahmose in the ribs. The great snow leopard was an easy target, given she was sprawled out over the other half of the bed. Ahmose had propped open a book and methodically turned pages as she read. Craning her neck, Maia spotted the book title. The Screwtape Letters by T.S. Eliot?

"Right, what's that then?" she asked, yawning again.

"The Fajr? Morning prayer? That is something a good Muslim does, isn't it?" The snow leopard chuffed in amusement.

"Look, enough with the religious pokes and prods, yeah?" Maia rolled out of bed and slipped into a sport's bra under a tank top tucked into yoga pants. "So it's not the first thing on my mind when it's early. I don't mock Christians for only showing up on Christmas, do I? I'm working out now."

"Enjoy yourself," Ahmose said, echoing her yawn albeit with far more teeth. "I might try the pool."

@zCrookedz

Feeling cross, Maia headed down to the hotel's fitness center. One of the perks of staying in a nice hotel in China; more than just cardio machines and weights. She spotted Simon immediately, if only because he was one of the dozen or so faces she knew in a thousand miles. He looked busy, though, and soaked with sweat and determination to lift stack after heavy stack of weights. A man exercising more than the body if she had to wager.

Trading a nod if he noticed, Maia instead went to the mats and stretched out before warming up with a series of light movements. After working a night's sleep out of her arms and legs, she went to work on a punching bag, landing blow after punishing blow on the leather. Then she chuckled and moved on to a mu ren zhuang, something even rarer in hotels than a punching bag. She had one back in her flat in London but being on the road so much it hardly had use.

As she wrapped up her workout, Maia spotted the big figure of Jimbo spotting for Simon. Her lips quirked into a wistful smile. Ahmose was many things to her but never a workout buddy. Though her smile slipped away as the conversation turned tense. Uncomfortable, the British Agent instead hit the showers before changing into something a bit more lowkey.

Jem%20and%20the%20Holograms_zpsh53th4yy.jpg
Dressed in a pair of blue jeans with a pink Jem and the Holograms t-shirt, Maia topped her outfit off with a purple stocking cap. Outside of the fancy red silk brocade dress and without make up on, the Agent looked almost an entirely different woman. She passed Simon conversing with Zoe and and Raven and gave the three a nod in passing.

Maia stopped by the breakfast buffet and picked out a plate of her own, loading it up with eggs, yogurt and fruit. Hurrah for a Western menu. Noticing Barry at a table and Leandra by the pool, she swung by the pool first and said. "Oi. Pretty girl. Have breakfast at a proper table with proper mates, yeah? The company will be good for you after yesterday's business. Shall we?"

Hopefully with Leandra in tow, Maia headed over and sat down next to Barry. "Right. You're the quiet one, aren't you. That's alright, I'm decidedly not. At all. It's Maia, by the way. Maia Asim." And she offered a hand for the lad to shake. "From London originally. Nice to work with a proper team again. It's been ages it feels like. Oh, I don't do solo work. ...Well, that's not true but usually with just a partner, not a whole gaggle. What do you think of the food, anyway? It's not rubbish is it?"

She tilted a head in the direction of the pool. Lounging on one of the lounge chairs was a fairly large snow leopard evidently enjoying a slim book while getting some sun. Though given how amazingly puffy and thick that black-speckled fur looked, it was a wonder the cat didn't over heat.

"That's Ahmose. My companion since I was 15. Turned my life around actually. Got me out of trouble and on the path of doing something constructive with my life. So what's your story then?" she asks, of Barry, of Leandra and of anyone else who sits at her table.
