"Yeah, okay that's nice..." G looked over at the battle and turned back to Altair. "Listen. We need to prepare your performance. But we Might be opponents so I can't know it. You need something that goes with you, your Pokemon and catches the judges attention. Did you like not see my last contest? I looked so cool with Vanilla." G stood up and adjusted her hat on Altair's head. "The bow will help but you need something else. How about a pony tail? I can do one for you."

G looked at Altair for a moment, trying to find a way to improve his current outfit. "Ugh If I would've known, I would've brought some stuff. Here, your Pokemon are steel type, so they look well with silver." G looked through her backpack and brough out the cuffs for her outfit. She popped off the silver stars on them. "Put these on, make sure they're visible." She looked at Altair for a bit more. "Here, just take em." She handed the cuffs to him. "They have a bit of blue but I'm sure that won't matter. This should improve things a bit. So, want me to do your hair?"

Better Luck Next Time

Heizou let out a few more relieved breaths before averting his attention back to the one he just had a decent battle with. If that was humor coming out of her, he might just be jealous of her ease. It's not that he did feel nervous still, but now he had to worry more about the future contests. He didn't need to win-it was all a want, every goal after all was always a want. But he wanted it badly.

"Everyone who doesn't find themselves arrogant always pushes the trophy away. You work well I suppose with Bug Types. I see an interesting amount of fire already waiting to burst that petrifying bubble of yours, but I wouldn't want to let you in on that surprise. Though it does seem we have melted some ice between us. I think you just taught me how to be more sociable towards others, so thank you. I enjoyed something I thought I wouldn't at the beginning of my training. Let's just hope that that doesn't end."

Heizou settled his pokemon tucked away in it's capsule inside the bag once again, patting it for just extra comfort. Who knows when he might just need to use dear Noivern again, after all, this day held lots of awaiting ceremonies for all trainers in Alola attending this here's event. It was close to just starting, yet far due to the excitement.

Speaking With: CloudySkyLoftyMoon CloudySkyLoftyMoon

"Y-Yes... I'm Hercules's trainer..." The girl mutters in response to Saga's excited utterances. Gently she taps the Teddiursa's pokeball to the back of his head, calling him to be withdrawn. She'll let him have his fun later, but for now it isn't a good idea to let him continue to run around. Especially not when they are all stuck on a ferry and there is a risk of the bear tumbling overboard if his curiosity gets the better of him.

Before the girl can say anything, her hand automatically gets taken by Saga's, and rapidly shook up and down in the young woman's greeting. While listening to her introduction, she nods her head demurely to be polite. When finally given the opportunity to answer the rapid barrage of questions, the girl speaks in a somewhat awkward manner, averting eye contact from Saga and blushing a bit.

"And yes, I-I'll be... competing as well. I trained with th-the team a bit, b-but this'll be m-my first time w-with a crowd. So I um... I'm worried about h-how I'll do. I d-don't do well with people... Unlike my m-mother..." She responds to the girl.

Upon taking notice of the Drizzile's trainer watching from the shadows, Anju clams up, and hides right behind Saga out of an automatic anxiety reaction. Jeez, wasn't Anju a mixture of shy and jumpy?

"If you really want to." Altair shrugged as G told him she wanted to style his hair. He wasn't a complete stranger to this type of interaction, as he remembered that a distant family friend enjoyed doing that to him when he was younger too.

"It's so hot here, I was thinking of tying it up a bit anyways." He looked around at the Alolan tourists in their graphic tees and shorts, noticing that he was probably the more unusual one, but in his defence it was an impromptu trip from Sinnoh in the first place.

"I did look at the clip, you guys were just...using moves though?" Vaguely recalling watching G's video play back on the plane at 1.5 times speed, Altair replied. "I thought you were practicing because you're like, new to this trainer stuff, all my Pokemon are already accustomed to using their moves, so I don't really need to practice that." The young man glanced over at G before averting her eyes again. "I mean, I know we have to battle, but if it's just using some moves on a stage, I figured my Pokemon can just...do that?"

Laurie Wright

Laurie had been spotted. "Arceus above..." they muttered. Drizzile dragged them over to where the other two trainers were standing. They couldn't help but grimace slightly as they stepped into the harsh sunlight.

Although not intentionally eavesdropping, they had heard the ongoing conversation. It was a relief to learn some familiar faces, and even more to know that they weren't the only one competing for the first time. The trainer who Teddiursa belonged to, Anju, seemed even more anxious than they were.

"I'm entering, too." They said. "Hi. I'm Laurie. And, er, I see you've already met Drizzile." The Pokémon in question stood next to them, quietly content. Laurie offered a sheepish smile, unsure whether to go for a handshake with Saga. They didn't want to be rude, but also didn't want their first impression to be 'that guy with the really sweaty hands'. Anju, meanwhile, didn't seem like she would mind missing out on that.

While these people seemed nice enough, Laurie couldn't help but internally hope that the ferry would reach the dock soon. Small talk was not their forte.

“Thanks! I grew up on a Bug-farm, so I’m familiar! Don’t fancy yourself much of a battler?”
Esther wouldn’t have taken Heizou for well…a non-battler; frankly, she hadn’t met too many battle-averse trainers.
“I’m sure you’ll be fine, it’s all for fun, y’know? Don’t swear it too much.”

The ship’s speakers crackled life, the Captain’s voice projected to all the passengers.
”Attention Passengers, please find your seats and buckle in. I’m Akoni and I’ll be your captain. Welcome aboard the Poni-Poni Express! We’re in for a short 30 min ride before we arrive at our destination—Exeggutor Island! To all our aspiring Coordinators, good luck out there!”

The speakers died with another crackle.
“Oh! That’s our cue, I’ll catch you at the Contest Heizhou~!”
With that, Esther scurried back to her seat. Next stop Exeggutor Island!

"Why did I agree to do this again?" Altair sighed to himself as he tugged on the collar of his outfit, after 30 minutes of G tearing through his and her own luggage, he was now wearing way too many layers of clothing for the occasion, including the blazer he wore for the Paldea League's interview (that he flunked) and a cape that used to be a poncho (for Sinnoh's climate).

He didn't know whether to be relieved or panic harder when he saw that he was first during the appeal stage. Good news, he can take the jacket off soon, bad news, that can be clearly seen on the Rotom phone screen that he was forced to put down.

Altair wasn't a person who gets stage fright, but one have to admit that it's almost natural to be slightly nervous when you get on stage with little to no preparation, especially when there's also a live audience and judges.

"Well," He looked down at the Pokeball he held and had hastily slapped too many "The Letter B" ball seals onto, "of course it's gotta be you. Let's get this over with." Altair said with a resigned calmness while tossing the Pokeball ahead.

From the Pokeball emerged a small fae-like Pokemon with a metallic shine, it was Psion the Klefki, Altair's first Pokemon. The metal keyring appeared on stage in a flurry of "The Letter B", the Pokemon itself has an expression of "what" on its face, but dutifully spun around and waved its tendrils to smack the "B"s into a shower of sparkles under the sun.

"Alright Psi, move it, let's do the thing." Altair clapped his hands twice to get the Pokemon's attention from the falling "B"s. "Castelia Style."

IflhH0h.png

"Light screen!" The trainer commanded, and in a blink of the eye, faster than usual thanks to its ability, the Klefki created a barrier of light. Without hesitating a single moment Altair continued, "no enemies to worry about, let's do Reflect next. Make it cool."

The key ring Pokemon gazed back at its trainer before nodding its small nub of a head, before generating another gleaming barrier, that intersected with the light screen from before. Altair looked at the Pokemon and nodded firmly. "Okay, good idea, Magic Coat next. And cycle that!"

The Klefki moved at a rapid rate, generating a variety of shining barriers of different colours, it seems to be creating some sort of shape with intersecting sheets of light.

"And now use Protect."

In the middle of the contest stage was a polygonal statue made out of pure light barriers of different colours and properties, glistening underneath the blazing sunlight, weaved together yet with sharped edges that were reminiscent of the types of "modern art" that lined Castelia City's condominium lobbies, often used as tax write-offs. In the middle was Klefki, glowing with the light colour of Protect's barrier, completing the form of the piece...

...
...

Or was it?

Was it...really there?

The first auto-suggested result of looking up "Pokemon contest beginner appeal tips" - don't obscure your Pokemon, showcase their innate traits and abilities as Pokemon.

Altair walked up a few steps in front of the statue made from barriers, now slowly fading away into a shower of sparkles. He was pretty sure this wasn't against the rules, or somewhat sure, or a little sure, or not sure at all actually.

"Alola may be a wonderful destination for a vacation, but I would like to give everyone present a small reminder..." The trainer spoke towards the audience and judges, the light statue behind him now completely faded away, but the Klefki that crafted it was nowhere to be seen.

"...That in crowded tourist destinations, please make sure to look after your personal belongings too while you enjoy the show."

Altair raised his hand and did a small beckoning gesture, and the Klefki that disappeared during the previous performance suddenly shot out of the audience area with a cacophony of metallic jingling sounds. Upon it hung more than a dozen of keys, keychains, and even what seemed like an ID card with a strap, much more than what the Pokemon started out the appeal with.

Seeing that his Pokemon managed to pull the stunt off, not that he ever had a doubt, this was how he survived in the past after all, Altair finally cracked a small smile and put his hand on his chest, bowing to the crowd slightly.

"If anyone finds the pieces presented here familiar," He gestured at the Klefki's haul, "please do not hesitate to find me backstage." The trainer straightened up and tried to do his best impression of the popular streamers with a wink and a wave, though still looking a little stiff.

    My first Contest!
Esther was one big ball of pure, unadulterated excitement. After a short opening ceremony and an introduction to the judges, the Contest moved right into its appeal stage and Esther, along with many other coordinators, were directed to a thatched hut where a television had been set-up to broadcast the ‘stage’. This was the so-called lounge. It wasn’t much, but then again Exeggutor Island was a Pokémon ecology reservation first and foremost and a contest venue as a distant second.

Already things were heating up and the first coordinator to take the stage released a—
"Klefki, the Key Ring Pokémon. This even-tempered Pokémon has a habit of collecting keys, it will sneak into people’s homes to steal their keys. Although it’s unclear why it collects keys, giving it a key makes Klefki very happy. In the past, people used to entrust Klefki with important keys which it would protect fiercely."

Esther lowered her Pokétch thoughtfully as the Coordinator—Altair, she believed—finished off his performance by absconding backstage with a jingle of keys and paraphernalia.

Frankly, Esther was immensely disappointed that he didn’t end his performance by moonwalking off stage— Sometimes you really had to do people’s job for them.
    “You’ve been hit by—Bam Bam! You’ve been hit by—BAM~! A smooth criminal~♪”

It was a performance worthy of applause and applause she did! Her own turn on-stage wasn’t far, she was third in line, and she felt more than ready! She’d changed into a swimsuit, rented a surfboard, and had gotten plenty of practice in Oblivia! That said, she was extremely curious about the appeals of the other Coordinators and how they would choose to display their Pokémon. Who knows, maybe she’d gleam some inspiration.

Laurie Wright

Did+you+see+that+one+about+the+three+sisters+who+_b2213d9d0535f1df318b13c08478a365.png
Laurie, now dressed in a white linen button-up shirt and a pair of chino shorts (only having what they had packed for the vacation to work with), tentatively walked out onto the stage. Their routine had been rehearsed plenty of times before, but never in front of a real audience. It was one thing to have total faith in their Pokémon, but they had to hold up their end of the bargain too.

Okay. Deep breaths.

It was time.

"Alright! Ponyta!" Laurie tossed a Pokéball into the air, releasing a Galarian Ponyta. The foal's most striking features had to be her mane and tail, which showcased resplendent shades of purple and blue. Whinnying, she trotted in a circle, before striking some poses for the crowd.

"Let's start off with a Fairy Wind!"

Ponyta stood up on her hind legs with strength and elegance as a sparkling pink dust emerged. Steadily, it swirled around the floor of the stage; the effect was somewhat like that of a fog machine at a concert.

"Now use Tail Whip!"

Back on all fours, Ponyta turned her back to the audience. With a swish of her tail, which was donned with a pink bow, the sparkles from the Fairy Wind dispersed into the air, gently raining down on the audience.

"And we'll wrap it up with some Psybeam!"

Ponyta threw back her head, launching bursts of multicoloured light like flares. This continued until the dust from the of the Fairy Wind had settled.

After a final leap into the air, the Pokémon stood proudly, taking in the applause.

"Thank you! Thank you very much!" Laurie called out. With their showcase complete, Ponyta galloped back to them. They crouched to the Pokémon's level and gave an affection embrace. Ponyta rubbed her muzzle against their face.

"You were amazing," Laurie whispered, delighted. The pair exited the stage. As soon as they were back in the waiting area, they slumped against the wall and let out a sigh of relief and exhaustion. Did that really just happen? It was a lot to process. They would be glad to focus their attention on appreciating the performances of their competitors instead.

Galarian Ponyta! That was a Pokémon Esther didn’t need her pokédex to identify. Laurie’s appeal was punchy and sparkly, a spread of fairy glitter highlighted by psychic power. It left the audience dazzled, but Esther didn’t have time to admire because she was up next!

Esther took the stage wearing a one-piece swimsuit, generously frilled and accentuated with a class swim skirt wrap. Dark black brightened to fiery tongues of fabric that licked the sand as Esther skipped to the center stage. It had been difficult to find a swimsuit that so-perfectly matched her hair, and a matching surfboard only added to the cost (rented), but it was worth every penny.
    “Susu it’s showtime!”

Also worth every penny were the Ball Capsules that transformed the pokéball’s mundane red flash into a font of bubbles and glitter! Spindly legs caught the wind, twirling twice as Susu descended onto Esther’s outstretched palm and struck a pose!

The bubbles & glitter descended and vanished onto the sand and that was the pair’s signal to start.
“You know what to do Susu, surf’s up!”

Esther lowered her arm and gave Susu a light toss that sent the Surskit skyward. The pond-skater puffed up and filled the air with the tropical fragrance of «Sweet Scent», Esther had made sure to let the bug-type gorge herself on Alola’s tropical flowers so that her sweet-scent would take on an Alolan-aroma.

The pink cloud hung in the air as Surskit landed and another pose pointed her antennae heavenward; a furious fusillade of «Bubblebeam» fired into the cloud of sweet scent, the fragrant plant-oils being absorbed by the bubbles which emerged from the cloud with a flowery pink tint.

As the bubbles began to descend, Surskit erupted with «Aqua Jet», displaying blistering speed and catching the bubbles in the wake of her Aqua Jet! The bubbles, made more durable by the addition of oil, were swept along by the currents—a pink comet’s tail as the water absorbed the oils from Sweet Scent and Surskit drew increasingly narrow circles closing in on…Esther!

Already laying prone on her surfboard, the Oblivia was more than ready for the next part of their performance! Susu’s Aqua Jet encased her, the jet-stream currents pulling her along in the pond-skater’s wake! It was like a waterslide drawn directly in the air, Surskit led the way with Esther and the pink comet-tail of bubble not far behind!

Once more Surskit circled, once, twice—gather speed until…SWOOOSH! Straight into the sky! The shooting star streaking into the heavens! Aqua Jet abruptly cut-off, Surskit descended, somersaults carrying her back to the beach while Esther and the pink bubbles were launched into the sky!

Launching her trainer into the sky was already a neat display of power and skill, but they were hardly done! Surskit paused to aim, eyes narrowed in concentration before—FWOOSH Hydro Pump shot into the sky, landing on Esther’s surfboard and pushing her higher yet!

Like a summer rain, droplets of water sprayed everywhere, sparkling in the sunlight along with the blush of bubbles which also began to descend…rapidly! It would take sharp eyes to notice, but the bubbles were capturing droplets of water, descending quickly as the grew heavier and heavier.

For her final act, Surskit erupted once more, this time with the white glow of «Quick Attack»! Once more she made a show of catching the bubbles before they could pop against the sand, but this time she did more than just catch them. She combined them. Two small bubbles became one big bubble; two big bubbles began one huge bubble…soon Surskit had managed to form a truly enormous pink bubble that sat on the sand—no, not the sand! All those circles she’d been drawing weren’t just for show, she’s used the wake of Aqua Jet to ‘excavate’ a small pond which had filled itself with all the excess water she’d tossed about.

In this small faux pond, sat a bubble that defied expectation and atop the bubble stood Surskit! The water within the pink waters within the bubble caught the sunlight and filtered it into a pink disco Elysium; the stage, the audience, everything was bathed in pink sunlight.

From her perch on the giant bubble, Surskit took a bow, welcoming the applause as her performance ended…or did it?

With a final flourish, Surskit pointed to the sky where—of course—Esther was now descending from her Hydro-fueled rocket ride.

A gasp rippled through the crowd! Cries of shock and fright! Tourists, the lot of them!

Adrenaline coursing, Esther grinned as she impacted the super-bubble, and the pink mass deformed under her weight in ways no normal bubble ever could. It only took a second or two for the bubble to reach its limit, but that was more than enough. The bubble POPPED! The water and fragrances within being released in a small wave—surfs up!

Clung to her surfboard, the Oblivian rode the wave until the water vanished beneath the sand, her knuckles were white from the ordeal (surely, no one would notice?) but things had gone off without a hitch! With her appeal truly and finally over, Esther took a bow as the crowd cheered!

Heizou Synopolis
Trainer 101!
Heizou whistled, watching the 'performers' for this year's contest's appeal stage come up. The first show was simply basic, nothing much but some blings here and there using the Klefki. It was an interesting Pokémon no doubt, and it even made Heizou wonder if he should catch one for his own batch of companions. Luckily, being the sixth performer let him observe the others with calm ease and actually view how other Pokémon work.

The next one was more interesting, a cute choice too for Ponyta. But Heizou didn't really want to choose Pokémon for appearance-more for how they act. After all, they all had their own minds, so the best thing was to find one matching with the trainer's. The fairy wind added a more appealing effect, turning the overall stage into light glimmers.

But things got even more better. A familiar figure on the 'stage' appeared, alongside the same Pokémon he had went against. Esther! Surskit was alongside the woman, and they brought a wonderful performance. Adrenaline could be rushing through the audience from the suspense she and her partner had come up with. But when it ended, Heizou wondered of what he should do for the Appeal stage.

It was only a few ways away anyway.

"That was so cool!" G clapped her hands together to welcome Altair into backstage. "I can't believe you barely practiced that. You two are like so in sync!" She dug quickly through her bag and brought out a Mt. Brew Blueberry Cool Blast soda can. "Here, you two can share this one, I already had mine."

G turned her attention to the screen, to see the next competitor take the stage. "Woa! Look at that Ponyta! It's so cuuuute!" G took out her RotomPhone to check the information on it. "We have to go to Galar to check them out. I love Ponyta in Sinnoh, but this one is so more my style." She stopped to think for a second or two while watching the performance. "Nevermind, I like fire Ponyta more. Rapidash look so beautiful!"

G watched the rest of the performance and clapped when Laurie walked in. "Great job! Your Ponyta is really cute!" She called out and then turned her attention to the screen once more. "This contest feels a lot more complicated than the first one. But I can't leave the circuit with a 3rd place!" G crossed her arms while watching Esther starting her performance. "Surskit? I remember seeing those at the lake by Snowpoint. Also very cute! Not as cute as Psi though." She smiled towards Altair and his partner.

Once Esther ended her performance, G greeted her also. "That was awesome! I loved the water style, really neat."

Saga couldn't wait for her turn for the Appeal Stage. Hugging her Combee to her chest as her eyes were glued to the performances, when she was watching the few trainers who went before her. Combee wasn't entirely happy about being wrapped in a hug but ignored it as it watched the performances. "Don't worry, Combee!" She snuggled the bee pokemon before letting her grip lessen, "Let's do this!"

Gleaming with eagerness as she ran onto the stage, Saga's flowy, honeycomb patterned dress before she released the bee pokemon when she was near the centre. "Sweet Scent, then Gust!" She cheered and pointed forward where Combee produced a circle of light, honeyed aroma and spreading it around the audience.

Buzzing off into the sky, Combee stopped not too far from the arena before it waited for a signal "Now now, you know what to do!" Saga cheered for the Bee Pokemon as she pulled out a thumbs up.

Bright, Green slashes that exploded with colourful orbs when they hit the ground began to decorate the arena in small, orbs. Combee let out a spiraling gust as he reunited into Saga's hands as the orbs come together and explode. Saga began to show her buzzing pokemon off when the audience began to clap and cheer. Twirling around as she waved to the cheering crowd, the pink haired trainer leaped with joy before hugging her pokemon tightly. "Alrighty, one round done!""

Heizou Synopolis
Trainer 101!
As the latest contestant had gleefully bounded off the stage and the crowd had shut of it's cheering, Heizou by then had got everything set up for his own performance. There had been a summer themed one and a few fairy-ish themed Pokémon dances-so far not a single proper Icy one. If there were any moves of it, he was sure he and his partner would do the most of it.

The lights of the performance space had been filtered with a more cool lighting to fit what exactly he had planned. A light blue half shoulder cape coat was to cover his left arm. Underneath was a white slightly puffed out, simple shirt that showed a rolled up sleeve. The hand that was covered by the cape had no glove, yet the one shown had a white glove that wasn't so long to slide underneath his shirt. Everything was to accommodate the colors of Glaceon-his choice for this round. Heizou even had let his Pokémon wear a matching mini cape but instead a full wrap around-colored in white instead of blue.

Once under the gazes of several strangers hoping a good set from him, he let out a sigh. The occasional calming breath. Glaceon stood besides him, looking up as if to ask for the signal. I got this...I do...the crowd is just like anyone you've ever met-think as if it's your family...

"Alright Glaceon, let's do this!"

He snapped his fingers of a hand in sync with his words, the other arm raised before Heizou let Glaceon take care of the rest. She twirled around for a few seconds before leaping onto his outstretched limb. Cold air swamped Glaceon's breath, the air coming out as Icy Wind and directed to the stadium flooring. Soon the area around him himself became frosty, but that wasn't all.

Ice Beam also protruded out of the ice type's mouth, dancing along the frost floor below Heizou until it became a circular ice rink all around. For the final step, Glaceon leaped off of his arm, and while mid air, summoned ice shards to hit the glass like area. Everything shattered at once, pieces of it glittering within sight before melting away. Glaceon by now had made it back besides him, and Heizou and her both did a dutiful bow.

Surrounded by the up roar of cheers and small clicks of people's palms connecting, Heizou had his lips in a smile. Glaceon returned onto his shoulder as they both returned to 'behind the scenes'. He didn't want a too over-the-top performance, something simple so it ended up only using three physical moves. But the real challenge was just coming.
