Fandom Pokémon: Exeggutor Island Contest

August 11, Morning Time — Seafolk Village, Poni Island, Alola

Aetherial winds that carried sweet smells, psychic light shows, and inSANE Hydro-Pump-fueled displays of surfing had all been served to an audience who ate it up like a Snorlax on his eight hundredth daily berry. They must have been particularly sweet, no, delectable berries, too, because the people in the stands spit back round after round of their compliments to the chefs in the form of thunderous applause.

The appeals so far might've sated the audience's appetite, but all they did for Nua was make her hungrier. Even just standing outside the thatched-hut, impatiently waiting for her and her Pokémon's turns in the spotlight, she could feel it all.

The THUMP-THUMP-THUMP! of her heartbeat quickening, the electricity racing across her skin like an Emolga was ZIP-ZAPPING! between each pore, and her breaths shortening like Alola's summer breeze was stealing her air away — the word for it was anticipation.

Anticipation to be front and center, to win, to outperform a bunch of losers...she was getting PUMP! PUMP! PUMPED!

Tiny fingers tugged at her white-and-green swim skirt, and two white arms stretched up from her side — her little buddy.

"D'you want uppies?" Nua grinned down at her Ral— no, her Kirlia. He'd only evolved a few days prior while they were practicing for the contest, and she was still getting used to her little buddy being not so little anymore. "Alright, c'mere Suita."

The Kirlia just looked up at her with his typical 'head empty' stare and his hands outstretched, and Nua hooked her's under his arms and pulled him up. "What a mama's boy you are."

She glanced back at the "stage" — ice SHATTERED! and glimmering crystals cascaded onto the snow. It was a little pretty, maybe, but they were ready to top it.

Back in his ball went the Kirlia, and Nua hastily preened herself as her heart picked back up with its THUMP-THUMP-THUMPING!

The spotlight was only a few feet, a few seconds, and a few moves away. It was time to seize it!

Nua had experienced it time and time again, but as she stepped out onto the stage area's soft sand she felt like there was no better feeling than having eyes on her. Well, maybe there was something better. It wasn't time for that though, it was time to start! She TOSSED! Suita's Poké Ball with a flourish, and when it popped open a light-pink cloud POOFED! into existence courtesy of a couple capsules.

Suita would be well hidden for a few seconds, and that was all they needed to prep their space. The cloud seemed to flood out from the bottom, bathing the sand in a layer of pink mist that Nua always thought seemed to sparkle if you squinted at it — Misty Terrain.

The cloud dissipated, revealing the Kirlia slowly twirling around in the Misty Terrain's center. He wobbled a couple of times, but he was basically freshly evolved. Nua was just proud that he was doing so well!

"Start the choir, Suita! <<Disarming Voice>> and <<Double Team>>!" She called out, watching with gleaming eyes as her little buddy nodded. The Kirlia didn't miss a beat — he sang a soft melody using, something simple that they'd come up with a few days prior, and the mist on either side of him rose up and coalesced into two perfect Kirlia-clones.

They spun and sang in perfect harmony, and another pair rose from the smoke to make their choir a quintet. Disarming Voice's soundwaves hummed with a faint pink light, and they spiraled up into the air in beautiful faint wisps. Nua let them do their thing for a few seconds, never taking her eyes off of Suita-prime in the center, until she called out, "Pick it up! <<Psybeam>>!"

The clones continued their simple twirling and simple singing, but Suita spun faster. He picked one leg up and outstretched a hand, pirouetting faster and faster with each rotation until he switched legs and gathered psychic energy between his little hands. The Psybeam SHOT! up into the air, mixing with the clones' Disarming Voice to make a bright-pink light show, and Nua watched with a grin.

Time for the finisher! "Close it out!"

Suita cut off his beam, and the faint blue glow in his eyes was replaced with white.

POOF! POOF!

The outer two clones BURST! back into pink mist that swirled around the remaining three.

POOF! POOF!

The other two clones poofed away, too, fully obscuring the still-twirling Kirlia in the center.

Nua smiled — this part knocked her mom's socks off on their video call!

Misty Terrain's glow faded, and the swirling fog dissipated to reveal...nothing. It was like the twirling Kirlia disappeared into thin air right along with his Double Team clones, but in reality he'd Teleported right into his trainer's arms. Nua looked down at her little buddy, and he looked up at her with his cutesy head-empty stare. "We're not done yet."

Suita's sudden exit didn't get quite the reaction she'd been expecting, so Nua resorted to plan B. She took a few steps forward with Suita in her arms, set the Kirlia down, and with his little hand in her's they took a bow.

Now it was time for the best feeling in the world. The audience caught on to the fact their performance was finished, and a thunderous chorus of cheers and applause rang out. Talk about music to her ears!

Nua couldn't keep herself from grinning wide as she and Suita waved and turned to head back to the thatch hut, and could only barely contain the urge to skip the whole way. The girl scooped her little buddy into her hands and SPUN! him around. "That was great, Suita! They loved you!"

The Kirlia didn't react much, but he did keep hold of her hand when she set him down. She looked around and noticed a group of the other contestants talking — must be the loser's bracket already divvying themselves up. Let's see...it was the klepto-Klefki dude, the surfer girl, and Mr. Cold. There were a lot of crazy hair colors around...Nua fluffed her own hair a bit. Should she get it colored?

There were a few other contestants milling about, too, but one stood out. Black-haired girl, white and blue dress...and were those blue underlights?! What was it with these people and dyed hair?!

Nua crossed the small room with Suita in-tow, and once she was a little closer to the girl she asked, "'Scuse me, is dyed hair like a...thing...with contests? It's like everyone has it here!"

G crossed her arms as she watched the Kirlia trainer do her multi clone show. That was quite impressive and her Sneasel could probably learn a thing or two about making clones. But that would have to be for another show. For now, they had their plan already. G went over her preparations in her head. There was that one move that was difficult to pull off, but if she and-

G blinked as she faced the person adressing her. It was the coordinator that had just participated. The Kirlia looked more adorable in person, which only brought a smile to the gamer girl. G looked a bit confused by the question made by the new arrival. "Well, it is like the current fashion, yeah." G touched her hair. "Helps you stand out, you know?"

The gamer girl smiled at and placed her hands at her hips. "Your hair is really pretty though, I doubt you would want to dye it. Nice job by the way, your Kirlia is really adorable. Gardevoir or Gallade?"

Heizou gave a half narrowed gaze to Altair, as if asking if he really had to reply to that comment-well, question, or not. Of course it was in a friendly manner, he just didn't want to act like he wanted to know everyone so that he could gain knowledge and a good image of who'd be winning the battle stages. But of course his own language was a bit morphed (not because I want long paragraphs...mwahaha...) because he wasn't around here. Still, he guessed he needed to explain.

"Well, aren't you the humorous one? Of course I never threaten anyone-I can't see myself doing it to anyone here or anyone I met before actually. Just for clearance-it's so you don't get intimidated by me. But I see that my own words makes you a bit tense. There is no need for such awkwardness...and I'll add in an apology for my wrong lines."

Heizou glanced at Esther, nodding to the other question while pulling out the Pokéball he had on him and gently tapping Glaceon. She seemed to know what was going to happen, but begrudgingly accepted being put away. He surely didn't need her sass coming in times like these.

"And yes, but not so much. Esther and I only had a mini battle on the same ferry we were riding just before this appeal stage and going on the island at all. She one, yet it was still still enjoyable. Though I'm glad to get revenge whenever I go against her. If I ever make it to her, that is. I'm quite impressed by the choices of Pokémon right now, but still a bit weary if someone was hiding a scary beast in one of their Pokéball right now."

"Gardevoir or Gallade?!" Nua suddenly crouched down and placed her hands over Suita's ears, or at least where she thought his ears were. "He only just evolved, you know!" It was way too soon to start talking about Gardevoir-this and Gallade-that! Luckily Ms. Black-and-Blue's suggestions of growing up didn't seem to reach the Kirlia — his face was just as blank as usual.

Nua huffed, pulled her hands away, and stood back up with a quick brush-off. "If you must know Ms. Nosy...I haven't given it much thought." She put a manicured hand to her chin and squeezed her face a couple times. Suita'd been a Ralts for so long that she'd never thought much about which evolution would suit him more. She gave the Kirlia a playful poke in the forehead, which sent him into what she could only imagine was an instinctual twirl, and turned back to Ms. Black-and-Blue — "He's kinda dopey for a Gallade, though, right?"

"Eh, it doesn't matter much right now." Nua waved the thought of Suita growing up away and reoriented herself to whatever the girl had said before that. "I never thought about the costumes that much...you can stand out, yeah, but isn't the idea to show off your Pokémon? Using moves and doing things that other people wouldn't think of?"

She paused for a second — she was getting ahead of herself. "I'm missing something, I guess, but whatever it is you've got it! Your costume is so cute!" Nua's was just something she threw together after a quick visit to a department store after her flight to Alola. There was definitely something to matching colors with your partner, but Ms. Black-and-Blue took it to a whole different level!

"You haven't gone yet, right? I definitely would've remembered such a cool outfi—" Oh. Dear. Arceus. How rude of her! Nua swept a hand through her hair and said, "Oh my gosh, I didn't even get your name! I'm Nua."

"Aren't you an eloquent one." Altair leaned against a chair casually and watched the guy speak, now understanding that perhaps it's just how he was, rather than anything for concern. "I suppose that's how coordinators are." He muttered while looking around, as G walked off to prepare for her turn, and the last appeal round.

"Yeah, do your best." Altair said to the dark-haired girl as she walked off to prepare, he glanced at her a bit worryingly for a moment, but eventually decided to leave her to her own devices. She's not a child, for goodness sake. He laughed at himself for thinking that G was a kid or teenager for weeks.

"I'm not exactly intimidated." Turning back to the conversation at hand, Altair looked at Heizou and responded more casually. "It's just rather interesting that someone would assume their presence is threatening or intimidating by default, you're not that scary." Altair chuckled slightly, "Unless you secretly run a mafia or something." He added in the most 'this is a joke' tone possible. "And there's no need to apologize. If that's how you prefer to speak, then so be it."

When the youth mentioned that he and Esther only met on the ferry and had a battle there, Altair raised his eyebrows slightly. "Oh, so that was you two." He commented nonchalantly. The mention of the ferry trip and Heizou's mention of 'scary beasts' did remind him of something though. "Excuse me for a moment." He pulled out two Pokeballs and tossed them towards the direction of the ocean.

From the two bursts of red light emerged two ghost type Pokemon, the imposing Dhelmise, which is a few sizes larger than the average specimen, and a playful looking golden hued Pokemon, Gholdendo. "You two can go off and play if you want." Altair instructed his Pokemon with a slight nod toward the ocean. Dhelmise waved their seaweed tendrils excitedly, bobbing up and down slightly. Meanwhile, Gholdendo generated a surfboard from the coins in its body and began sliding towards the water already.

Another quick red burst came out as Altair's Togedemaru jumped out and landed directly on Gholdengo's surfboard, the latter looked slightly annoyed (as well as lost some speed), but chugged on into the water diligently. A soft sploosh sound can be hurt as the giant chunk of metal sunk, but then bobbed up slowly. Togedemaru decided to jump onto Dhelmise's much larger body instead after that.

"...Alright, if you really want to go." Altair shrugged and let the electric round Pokemon go play in the ocean as well. "Don't overdo the electric moves, we're in regional waters. Let Asago (Gholdendo) handle it." The trainer nodded towards the Gholdengo, who've always been more skillful when it comes to controlling his firepower, compared to his electric rodent peer.

"Sorry about that, it's been a while since they got to play in the water. I was too caught up being the first appeal and all to let them out." Altair returned to explain his actions to Heizou, while turning around and waving and shouting to the Pokemon. "Come back when the contest's over! Okay?"

Klefki floated beside his trainer dutifully, seemingly scorning at the childishness of his other party members. "He's the only one even remotely interested in this whole...thing. Well, I suppose I have other Pokemon who're willing to do it if I make them, but he's the only one who'd enjoy it. I did mention I'm not actually a coordinator, no?" Altair laughed dryly, referring to his Klefki, who was probably the only one of his Pokemon who genuinely enjoyed both showing off and being unnecessarily elaborate during that process, making him the only Pokemon of his he was comfortable with pushing into a contest with.

Esther usually wasn’t one to judge but…beady yellow eyes, loose cheese-lock hair, awkwardly pudgy three-fingered hand, lopsided body proportions and waddly stubs for legs…
    Ew, ew, ew...
Some Pokémon were simply possessed of a terrible misfortune: when Arceus was handing out beauty and grace, it had skipped right over them.

The Oblivian averted her eyes as Gholdengo made a mockery of locomotion; rather, with Altair’s release of his Pokémon, Esther realized it was best to release her own. After all, this was a prime chance to watch more experienced coordinators up-close.
    ”Come out and stretch y’all!”

She tickled the surface of her Pokéballs, coaxing out each occupant—five flashes answered, the six faltered then remained stubbornly shut. Tickles turned to a gentle caress as Esther wore a commiserating smile. Not today, it seemed.

Jangmo-o, Houndour, Bounsweet, Drifloon, and Surskit; Esther returned her attention towards the boys to introduce her Pokémon.
“Meet Pyrrha, Halay, Çiera, Jecroix, and of course, Susu. See any scary beasts among them?”
A snicker escaped her as she teased Heizou. He was way too worried; who cares what Pokémon other people wanted to keep hidden?

Nosy? It was a bit rude but the girl seemed to say it in a more carefree manner and not actually trying to offend G. At least for now. The Kirlia did look young, but G figured all of them did. At least now, she was sure Nua had friendly intentions. G smiled and shook her hand. "The name's G, like the letter G. Thanks for the compliment! I did some research and noticed a lot of coordinators do try and match with their teams. I don't have a sponsor though, at least not for dresses. So, I bought one that matched with most of my Pokemon."

G waved her hand and her Rotomphone came out. "Here's my team so far..." The screen unlocked and a gallery of G's Pokemon started to show up. "Most of them are blue, white and black. So I searched for the dress that best fit them all. My Psyduck recently evolved, so that was lucky because adding yellow would've made things so much more complicated. How do you show up on your social medias? I can follow you to see your contests in the future, I really liked your show."

He scowled at Esther, knowing the hidden mockery-that wasn't offensive but more teasing-coming from her glowing face. The two people were taking out their own Pokemon, so Heizou decided it was only best for him to do the same in turn. He lightly slid his hands to his bag once more with a slightly relieved sigh, only reaching for four.

Gardevoir, Lycanroc, Meowstic, and Espeon popped out in flashing forms-creating a stance once coming forth, before actually moving to circle around Heizou who had took another chance of standing up. Glaceon was put away for typical reasons, and as for Noivern...he was too have his chances sooner than later. This would prove Esther wrong about her previous comment-and to rub it in her face with sarcasm and humor, he plucked dear Espeon from the ground and held it up towards her way.

"If Glaceon's eeveeloution wasn't enough, I hatched another perfect for me! At least I wouldn't be stuck having just my favorite Pokémon types. All come in useful ways, so why not have a chance at it while it's there? It'd be a waste if no one made use of it. And sure, I guess I was being a bit too dramatic of how Pokemon can be. But cut me some slack, it's not like every Pokémon can be appealing."

He gave a quick glance towards Altair's and Esther's Pokemon, a small smile quirking upwards amongst his lips again when he saw the interesting types varying in all kinds.

(Hear me out...a Kirlia and a Gardevoir between two different trainers is crazy Patriot Patriot )

While all of her competitors were arguing/debating about the beauty or bestiality of differing pokemon, Anju (finally) strolled into the arena, taking one deep breath. The girl was wearing, in addition to a flamboyant cerulean dress, a domino mask. It wouldn't hide her identity, but it would allow her to pretend that no one knew her. That it wasn't her performing... that it wasn't her being seen by hundreds, nay, thousands of people who would judge her. With one more deep breath, the girl threw a pokeball up into the air, an old looking pokeball with a lot of wear and tear, signaling the age and experience of the monster held within.

Bursting forth was a powerful looking Volcarona, fiery scales being cast off as it flies up. "Engarde Vesta!" Anju calls out as the flaming moth comes forth.

Vesta proceeds to climb higher into the skies of the performance stage, before Anju calls out. "Vesta, engage with quiver dance!" As soon as the words escape the girl's mouth, the Volcarona begins to fly in a rhythmic pattern, swaying to and fro, the heat emanating from her body getting even hotter. The bug pokemon seemingly glows a little as its stats increase greatly.

"Now use string shot to create multiple cocoons!" Anju calls out. In response, Vesta shoots multiple strings of webbing at the ceiling of the facility, made easier due to her flight allowing her to be close to the ceiling. Multiple hanging strings go down. On the ends of these multiple strings are large cocoons dangling like disco-balls. "Great job, now ignite them with a heatwave!"

Even hotter heat emanated from the Volcarona, causing the cocoons to burst into flames. "Now give them a light show with gust from below!" Anju adds. The bug proceeds to rush down below the hanging balls, stopping on a dime right before touching the ground, and flap her wings, causing the fiery balls to launch skyward and appear like a constellation before the eyes of the spectators.

"Now pop them with bug buzz!" Anju calls out, to which the ever reliable Volcarona launches yellow waves of energy, buzzing quite loudly. As the energy touches each of the flaming cocoons, they burst like fireworks, yellow and orange energy sparkling out in a beautiful and dazzling display. All of them burst one by one until there only remains one cocoon hanging directly above Vesta. As if in slow motion, it falls right down to the bug.

"Now finish this one with a dual wingbeat!" Anju shouts. The fire type climbs up once more, wings glowing white, as she dives into the cocoon and slices it in half, causing it to burst. All of the red and orange energy contained within the flames sparkle forth as it bursts, cloaking Vesta in a brilliant light. The bug type floats in the air and faces the audience's adulations, before slowly floating back down to Anju, who takes a bow once Vesta is right behind her.

"Thank you for being a wonderful audience." Anju says in her bow, before lightly tapping Vesta with her pokeball, recalling the pokemon. "And you did wonderful as well Vesta." She whispers to the ball, as she returns back to the waiting room, butterflies returning to her stomach now that she is no longer distracted by her performance.

Interesting name aside, this girl seemed like a complete cornucopia of contest counseling! Nua didn't know much about the coordinator scene, at least not from the coordinator's side, but Ms. Black-and-Blue had everything locked down. Stage names, stylists, sponsors?! It took everything in her to stop her pupils from morphing into big fat dollar signs — how lucky was she that the first person she talked to wasn't some other shmuck just trying it out?! Thank you, intuition, for never letting her down.

After a quick round of 'Oh my gosh!' and 'They're so cute!' when...G...pulled the pics of her team up, Nua "My socials?" Nua had her own personal accounts, but nothing dedicated to contests or anything. "I have Shinxtagram and all that, but I don't have one set up for performances or anything."

She was about to ask to actually see G's to get an idea of how she should start, but a tug at her hand reminded her of the Kirlia at her side. Suita cradled her hand and moved a little closer, glancing back and forth between the sudden surge of Pokémon that'd invaded the backstage-bungalo and Ms. Black-and-Blue. He reached both his hands up — the universal language for 'uppies'.

Nua pursed the corner of her mouth. Couldn't he see she was trying to network here?! "C'mere, then," she said as she pulled him up into her arms, balancing him on her hip. She turned back to G — "Sorry, I think he's getting a little antsy. It's getting a little..." Nua glanced back at the steadily-growing number of Pokémon. "...crowded in here. I'll catch you after your performance, I'm so excited to see what you're gonna do!"

She kept it simple and gave the girl a parting grin before heading back outside into the fresh Alolan breeze. And just in time, too! Nua stepped out just as the contestant after her, something with an 'A' if she remembered the roster right, put on a fiery performance with a Volcarona of all things!

Nua frowned as she watched it SWOOP! and BLAZE!. Was it one of the coolest things she'd seen in a while? Ugh...maybe. Was it annoying that she was competeing with that? Abso-LUTELY!

G watched as her name was coming up to go perform. She smiled at Nua and excused herself. She took out the Premier Ball and started walking towards the stage. She stood in front of the judges and smiled, placing her right hand on her hip and raising her left hand with the Poke Ball. "My name is G and this is my partner, Vanilla!"

The Premier Ball opened up and the artic fox jumped into the sky. She curled up into the ball and spinned as she started to come down. Before landing she spread open her tails and her legs stretched out, landing with her head held high and her front legs corssed in front of her. The soft landing spread a few icy sparkles. "We present to you, Winter Wonderland!"

G hugged her chest with her arms while the Alolan Vulpix sat on her back legs and shot an Icy Wind into the sky, creating some sort of crusty cold fountain. A pop song began to play and G then proceeded to walk casually around the made up fountain, swaying her hips from side to side, moving according to the tune.

As she made her way to the front of Vanilla once more, she stopped and raised her hands into the air. Behind her, a dozen pointy icy shards shot into the sky, which landed perfectly in a circle around G and Vanilla. The Vulpix then jumped on to G's shoulder while G placed her hands on her hips. The Alolan fox's tails began to glow along with the Ice Shards laying around. Vulpix jumped and spinned in the air while using Powder Snow around them, making the air begining to crystalize. "A nice gift to take home, a G and Vanilla, Snow Globe!"

Vulpix landed and shot an Aurora Beam above G, which connected with the Powder Snow and then down to the Ice Shards, creating a glassy round barrier around them which shifted colors thanks to the aurora. The made up Snow Globe stayed up while G and Vanilla bowed to the judges. "Thank you!"

The coordinator swooped up her Vulpix into a hug as the fake snow globe fell apart before they walked away with G skipping joyfully. She walked into the area with the rest of the participants, swaying her hips and dress to the sides in a joyful manner. "That was perfect!"

    Half…?
By her count, Heizou’s psychic types accounted for half his team. Was that enough to call himself a Psychic type trainer? Perhaps…

Esther squinted and pouted and playfully stuck out her tongue. Guess he wasn’t lying. There was even a chance that Heizou had other Pokémon elsewhere who were also psychic or dark types.

Esther herself had left three of her Pokémon back home in Oblivia: Pari the Munna, Kasriel the Zigzagoon, and Bambi the Shellos.

Focus returning to Heizou’s Pokémon, Esther pondered.
Wonder which one will debut in the battle stage…?

It wouldn’t matter. Esther had already locked in her choice and penned up a few strategies to grant her the edge in battle. There wouldn’t be enough time for a last-minute change and brainstorm session, especially as the second to last contest took the stage with a—
    ”What. IS. THAT!?

Six scintillating wings, deep crimson horns and positively adorable little legs nestled within a sea of fuzz. Esther’s pokétch was scanning before she’d even finished admiring:

    Volcarona, the Sun Pokémon

Thought to be the embodiment of the sun, as it flies, it scatters its flaming scales. In some areas of the world it was feared by ancient people, who referred to it as “the rage of the Sun”, in yet other areas of the world it is praised as a deity; legends says that when volcanic ash darkened the atmosphere, Volcarona’s fire provided a replacement for the sun.

Cool! Beyond cool! Now that was a powerhouse bug! Esther immediately hit record. Her little sister would love this!

As fate would have it, Anju’s fiery performance was followed by a icy performance from G. Esther contributed to the enthusiastic applause for both girls. She was about to congratulate them in-person when the PA system crackled to life with a message from the Judges.

”We thank all our Coordinators for their wonderful performances! The Judges will now recess to judge the performances and determine which contestants proceed to the second round! Trainers will have 30 minutes to rest and recuperate after which the succeeding Coordinator’s will be revealed and the Battle Stage will begin!”

“Alright, keep your eyes open and pay attention! We can learn a lot from this. I’ll be relying on you to identify the people I should watch out for.”

With the Battle Stage just around the corner, Esther had retreated to recess with her Pokémon. With the added isolation, Feebas had joined the group and they’d spent a few minutes digging a small pond for her comfort.

In Esther’s assessment, it was in her best interest to allow her Pokémon to act as her eyes and ears. They could learn from the other battles going on and serve as council between matches. It wasn’t much, but every advantage had to be seized.

The P.A. System came alive once more with the tender tones of Nurse Joy’s,
”Contestants, please direct your attention to the stage where the succeeding Coordinator’s will be displayed!”

Esther nodded along as a holographic screen was projected onto the sky and the brackets were revealed.

    Esther vs Heizou
    Saga vs Anju
    Laurie vs Nua
    Altair vs G

”Coordinators will battle in a double-elimination tournament! Meaning after a loss, a Coordinator will fall to a secondary tournament bracket and be matched to a Coordinator who has a similar record of wins and losses. Once a coordinator has been defeated twice, they are eliminated from the tournament!”

”The winner of the secondary bracket will be given a chance to challenge the winner of the primary bracket and then the runners-up of both brackets will battle it out for third! Once the top three Coordinators have been established, all eliminated Coordinator’s will be given a single opportunity to challenge one of the top three. If a Coordinator succeeds in their challenge, they will take loser’s position and enter the top three. Once all challenges have been made or forfeit, the final three Coordinators will be granted the Exeggutor Ribbon!”

In simple terms, this was a double elimination tournament where the top three would then defend their positions against challengers King of the Hill style.

    Esther’s first opponent was…
    Heizou?
The first opponent was also the most familiar one, her ‘psychic’ friend. Esther liked her chances. Though Heizou was strong, her Pokémon matched up well against Psychic types but…

I could play the long game instead.
Rather than give her all and potentially expose her tactics in the earlier rounds, it was also possible to hold back and seek a resurgence from the loser’s bracket.

There were benefits to hiding her trump cards. If she could make it all the way through the loser’s bracket without exposing all her tricks, maybe she could catch her opponent by surprise to win the whole thing.

Of course, that was a big IF. Being inside the loser’s bracket meant there was no more insurance. One loss would knock her out of the tournament until the final King-of-the-Hill section… it was risky. Furthermore, each Coordinator would have to battle at least three times, two if they forfeited their challenge at the end.

Then again…did she really want to win because she caught her opponent off-guard? Mayhaps later… But this was her contest debut! Rather than subterfuge, wasn’t it better to win with a dazzling performance?

“Okay! Let’s do thing Halay, we’re going undefeated—all the way to the end!”

The projection showed her battle against Heizou would be on battlefield one and Esther could hardly wait! She returned Halay to her Pokémon and rushed off.

She was ready. She need only wait for her opponent to arrive.

Thankfully the given time of thirty minutes in peace had calmed down any existing/remaining anxiety from Heizou. His other Pokemon had seen his little frets but it'd be soon that he was more than ready. The selected Pokemon he had chosen has at least been seen once-and the burgundy boy kept fate in them that they'd succeed. The last performance for the appeal stage had left everyone surprised-way different from all the others but interesting. Now, he was just settling in when the announcement rang on again...

Something about having eyes on a projected film in the stage area brought his gaze up. It'd be displaying who Heizou would be going against in the contest-and at first he felt a distant thrill riding in him. But that quickly disappeared, heart leaping up as if about to join in the memory of a heart attack. The following words of the voice ringing about on the speakers was not at all on his mind. As much as getting two chances in the contest is great, now looking back at the scene, he felt a bit drained.

Esther vs Heizou

Having dear old Esther as his opponent was...fine, he supposed. But Noivern was going to be his choice for battle. The first meeting up with the other coordinator forced him into taking the dragon type out since they were technically the only one accountable for being over water. At least he hadn't went full on out with the ferry incident-Heizou knew better beforehand to actually dive in to a pile of sticky strings. Attacking from far in the past would've been better, but he had decided against it. Now he knew he'd have to actually try now.

Yet this might also help him. Esther had a half-and-half assumption about his Noivern still. She had yet to find out he was Heizou's ace partner-even if it doesn't mean all victories end well. The little night creature was a Noibat in the beginning, and he wanted to make sure his Pokémon had a perfect legacy to carry on. Hopefully the Pokemon Esther chose didn't have some sort of advantage from the very start.

The area he was to be directed didn't take him long to get to-but Heizou did double check to have the rest of his Pokemon put back inside. They'd be better off besides him, even if still in their balls, since it'd give a sense of comfort. A whole article-like amount of ideas were swarming through his head of the possibilities he might encounter.

Esther wet her lips and focused. She had taken position near the sea with the breeze at her back. The sand was warm, uncomfortably so; the scarred flesh around her legs itched with the heat, a faint reminder of the flames that had born them. She counted the moments by the crashing waves, whose cool waters provided brief relief to her discomfort.

For this round, Esther proudly displayed her motivations. Winning this Contest would be among the first steps she made towards avenging her scars. She suffered the discomfort to remind herself of what was at stake; friend or not, she wouldn’t hold back.

She couldn’t rely on Susu’s (Surskit) trickiness or Pyrrha’s (Jangmo-o) power. Victory would require both. Among Esther’s Pokémon that left one option. Esther’s grip on her chosen Pokéball tightened as she let it fly—
    “Vīs alae alae, Halay-Alae!”

Smoke and fire poured from the Pokéball, followed by the sinister, «Unnerve» -ing howl of the Dark Pokémon, Houndour. Halay-Alae matched well into many of Heizou’s Pokémon, save Noivern and Esther liked her chances of starting this battle on the up-side. So truthfully, she hoped Heizou selected anything but Noivern. Fingers crossed!

Heizou had only just rounded himself onto the battlefield, yet the sight to behold was a bit better than he imagined. He made sure to keep surprise swept off his face as he stood a lengthy expected distant from his opponent. They both assumed a good enough glance at each other until the round had begun. A fly of a ball brought a intriguing Pokémon-a dark and fire type? Something about that couldn't help but ring a bell in his mind.

All the Pokémon he had took out during the break was psychic and dark types. Perhaps Esther was hoping for one of the mons he used as props back there. The frown on his face flipped out into a smile. Even if Noivern was already fought against, against the Houndour both had advantages. But Heizou better not forget how much of a strategic the friend across him was. It wasn't like gears weren't already turning in his head, though.

His own hand grabbed for what he searched for, and soon enough held up his own Pokéball. "Entertain me, Noivern!" With a short fling, a flash of gleaming light spawned the bat-like creature, who was in a position with both wings covering it's body. As soon as they spread, a ringing sound caused by a soundwave sounded. Heizou had gotten used to Noivern coming out of it's confines like that, but remembering the past started to make him laugh inside. Usually, he'd just cringe. But no way was he going to do that here.

Now...Ladies First!

    And…Noivern. Of course…
One-in-Six odds and she’d still lost. Sometimes Lady Luck was cruel and unforgiving.

Well, there was no use crying over spilt milk. There were advantages to facing Noivern as well. She knew some of Noivern’s moves, but there was no guarantee the moves she’d seen against Susu were the same moves Heizou had registered for the Battle Stage.

However, she was at least familiar with the Noivern’s Pokédex entry and she could eliminate a few strategies which she knew wouldn’t work against it.

Esther licked her lips as Heizou took position and…did nothing.
Ohhhh, I’ll make him regret that…

He wanted her to take the first move? Fine,
    ”Don’t mind if I do—Halay, Nasty Plot!”

Esther leaned back as Houndour widened her stance, Dark type energy galvanized around the Dark Pokémon and would provide extra oomph to her subsequent moves. It was a safe first play that would pay dividends as the battle advanced.

    Weren’t expecting that, were ya?

Esther threw a smug look across the battlefield. Houndour didn’t usually know Nasty Plot, it wasn’t rare, but it was certainly uncommon. Or at the least, Monty’s Houndour hadn’t known Nasty Plot.

This was good momentum, a free +2 was an excellent first step towards victory.

Heizou's eyes narrowed a bit, seeing Nasty Plot settle in for Houndour. Initially, the move would be best used for Houndoom-the evolved form of Esther's Pokémon. Perhaps it was nearing it's time to gain it's evolution. It'd be a sight to see. As much as it might be just strategic for his opponent, now he'd have to get things moving along first. He brought his hand forward to motion on in a sideways, 3-Fingered-Salute as some may call it.

Fine then, if that's how you wanna play...!

"Ah, I hate starting things like these...Noivern, something basic. Our last battle hasn't seen victory, so we'll make it up this time. Flash out Supersonic."

In all means, Heizou would have to give a slight worried glance towards Houndour-or Halay for what Esther called her battle Pokémon-only later. The creature itself would technically be able to hit Noivern while still in the air since there were moves for things like that. Even so, Houndour carried dog-like characteristics. If Houndour wanted to play fetch, they'd have to manage to catch Noivern first.

The bat let out a defiant grunt and swiveled up into the air, sky high and a good ways away for crowds to view. Once target was fixated, it's jaws gaped open to let out a curdling screech, rows of waves supposedly hitting it's opponent. Getting Houndour confused was something along his mind, so getting it out of the way would be best. In other words, Noivern wouldn't stop until Houndour was going to do something on it's end.

    “Ha! You're on!”

    Great minds thinks alike—
Heizou wanted to play with soundwaves; heh, that had been Esther’s plan all along! From its Pokédex entry, Esther recalled Noivern's proficiency and reliance on it's hearing. It was an excellent night fighter who could attack with Ultra-sonic soundwaves.

Naturally, Noivern's ears were Esther's first target!

Both palms raised to plug her own ears as Esther called,
    “Make it loud, SNARL!”

The air distorted with power as a Houndour barked out a sinister snarl, that raced to meet—possibly even down out—Noivern's supersonic. If Houndour couldn't hear the supersonic waves then she'd be safe from confusion, right?

Esther wasn’t sure how those moves interacted, but her logic seemed...sound. Heh. Trying to out-loud Noivern would be a better gamble but Nasty Plot would help and...wait, did Nasty Plot increase Snarl's power by making the move louder? How DID these moves interact??? Whatever, it was way too late tot hink about that and this was still a better option than trying to evade the swift-moving sound-waves.

    Gamble! Gamble! Gamble!

"Just so you know, I'm not going easy on you so you better do the same." She sighed and took a step back, smiling. "Lose has to buy the other one lunch! I'll go out there first."

G went to her backpack to switch Poke Balls. She then proceeded to walk out to the stage, where she would take her side and wait for Altair to show up. Her Rotomphone buzzin around taking pictures from affar and live streaming the whole event to her fanbase. G held the Poke Ball with her two hands. "This is your first show, no matter what, I'm proud of you." She whispered to it before looking up.

"Let's show them the fruit of our training and rock this joint, go Banana!"

The Premier Ball flew into the air and popped open to release Golduck. The blue duck Pokemon did two front flips in the air before landing on his two feet. He spread his arms open and a small mist emerged from his mouth. "Ready whenever you are, Altair." G called out, scared but excited at the same time.

Heizou grimaced when Houndour came up with snarl. The sounds were increasing and so was the movement of the wind. He pulled an arm above his face to block it, but was able to see Noivern slowly get beaten at what it's best at. The pure luck! Sometimes this girl uses her brain a bit too much in such circumstances. And I'm the first to deal with it. It'd be no surprise if she won, but who am I to think so negatively when everything had only just begun?

A small hint of flailing wings from the bat proved it was going to stop using it's move. Supersonic faltered, and in that split second Noivern was directly hit in a sweet attack that brought it flipping over mid-air, and then back to the ground. The sand simply skimmed over to Heizou as his Pokemon made it's stance, right back up again-but not free from hurt. Ah, this was going to be too tricky. Esther wanted Noivern to use sounds, perhaps she read his mind to easily. He shared a glance with his partner, as always to see if each other were okay, before thinking on the next move.

The dog had a great trainer, and what made a great trainer made a great opponent. "It was inevitable, but we can do better. Use Dragon Claw!"

Noivern shook itself, composed enough so that two green, glowing blades format the Pokémon's claws. Heizou waited for the bat to start charging at Houndour, and perhaps land an attack this time. Yet, just nearing the other Pokémon, Noivern chosen to swoop up back into the air and dive down from the height. If Esther had got caught in surprise, that would mean Houndour was defenseless. If not, it'd either have to manage to dodge out of the way despite Noivern's fast flight, or bear against it with a move of it's own.

    Score!
A few more direct hits like that and maybe Houndour would even clutch the win. Who said dragon types were the hardest type to deal with, wasn’t she dealing with them just fine?

    ”Halay, follow-up with—"
Esther froze, her face sour as Houndour staggered drunkenly across the sand.

    AHHHHHH,
that lucky red-haired rabble-rouser! Apparently, you couldn’t out-shout super-sonic; Esther filed that knowledge away from later.

For now, she’d keep her fingers crossed. She wanted two things: a short confusion and no confusion-induced fumbles. Once more, her fate was left to the dice.

Noivern was closing in with Dragon Claw, Esther softly cursed—
    Knew I should’ve registered Counter…

Unfortunately, Esther hadn’t planned on taking hits due to the nature of Contests, so she’d forsaken Counter in favor of another move…

    ”Catch its wings, Thunder Fang!”

Of course, whether Houndour could hear those orders through the fugue were one thing and whether it could actuallycatch dragon claw was yet another. If they were lucky, Heizou & Noivern would exit the exchange worse for wear. Dragon Claw would land, but Thunder Fang might just leave Noivern paralyzed or flinching.

Heizou watched intently as Noivern swept downward again, hearing that he managed to also cut off Esther's move since Houndour stumbled beforehand. But now, inching closer in the fall, the bat soon met with a sparkling new force. Seriously...that 'ought to be bugged out! Of course Esther managed to huff out something last second, so when his Pokémon met head on and claws first to the dog, it'd be stopped.

Houndour, leaving Heizou to watch his partner get technically ruined, opened it's own mouth to let Thunder Fang form in a mix of just a blur of electricity and bright yellow canine teeth. Of course, Noivern was tackled - forcibly letting out a wail when the shocks coursed through it. The clamps on it's only escaped brought it's loss close...but he wasn't going to let that happen.

Down on the ferry, Heizou's first appearance towards Esther had been a flutter of stutters and nervous laughs behind a mask that probably was going to break any second. Surpassing the appeal stage was one of the only things that let courage flurry past him, and with that coursing through him, it'd be better called as weapon rather than a weakness.

“It’s always the quiet ones you gotta watch out for..."

It was funny he kept thinking about that.

Meanwhile, back to the electrocuted Pokémon, Houndour seemed to be having it's own fun handling Noivern with ease now. But Dragon Claws was still, somehow, working in broad daylight. In tough times Heizou made sure to let his `mons note that there was always a way to score a point, despite losing something else. To prove that, the bat had let it's hurt become a sort of feint for which the blades of Noivern's nails managed to hit it's opponent. For that second, Houndour must've gotten it's move to 'loosen' in whatever way, which let Heizou's Pokemon stagger backwards and free from chance.

There was some occasional glitters of electricity running along the battered bat's body, but those wings of it's had lifted within a moments notice-a roar bellowing to show Heizou wasn't done yet.

Nua squinted up at the holographic screen, and a grin spread across her face when she saw her name where it should be among the appeal round's victors. She felt about as giddy as an Alolan Sandshrew in the blizzardiest-blizzard to ever blizz all over the place, but making it through the appeals was only phase one of Operation: See How Easy it Would be to Get Super Duper Famous or Something. They still had phase two to go, and even though they had a bit more battle experience than coordinating it would still be more difficult than the first round had been.

If she understood it properly, they'd have to battle at least three times if they managed to crush every match. At minimum: two to make it to the end of the primary bracket, then another if they were challenged for their spot in the top three. They'd have the same number if they ended up in the loser's bracket, too, but the loser's would technically be allowed more losses if she heard correctly. Oh, you made it all the way to the end of the primary without losing? Guess what, you can get challenged by someone who threw their first match and if they beat you you're out!

Nua rolled her eyes and looked down at Suita, who'd been staring up at the holographic display like his dopey self was reading the words. She asked, "You ready to take this thing all the way to the top, buddy?" Her Kirlia gave her a spin, and she took that as a resounding 'rip, roaring, ready to go'.

She turned back to the match-ups to see who their first stepping stone would be. "Laurie, huh?" That was...the person with the Galarian Ponyta? If she remembered right, their appeal didn't have as much of the spectacle that some of the others did. That didn't mean it wouldn't be a threat in battle, though. She'd rather go up against someone who was all flash and no fire than a master of the basics.

Nua spent her remaining twenty six allotted minutes kinda thinking up a strategy, but it mostly ended up being her taking pictures with Suita. The time on their photoshoot Alolan-breezed by, and she stood on the edge of their designated battle stage before long.

Her heart THUMP-THUMP-THUMPED! like a Tinkaton who'd caught sight of some dastardly Corviknight and was moving down a row of carefully placed boulders, and she took a deep breath as she eyed up their opponent across the way. All they had to do was win and look good doing it. Too freakin' easy.

"Take the spotlight, Suita!" She called, tossing his Poké Ball in an arc. The Kirlia popped out with the same poof of pink smoke as in their appeal, but it didn't spread this time. He just started twirling, but his eyes stayed trained on their opponent.

There was no tactical advantage to give up in releasing her Pokémon first, so Nua just waited to see who their opponent had chosen.

Hoping against hope; against the odds Houndour’s spasmodic discharge of electricity had injured Noivern along with herself. It wasn’t exactly Esther’s plan, but hey—that was still a W.
    We take those!

Despite that, Esther wore a frown. She wouldn’t be satisfied with one lucky, pyrrhic exchange. They would need to do more than get lucky.

Noivern wouldn’t go down easily, of that Esther was sure. Thunder Fang was an okay option, but it wasted Houndour’s boosted ranged attacks and general preference for special moves. Worst of all, trading blows wasn’t in their favor. A quick glance at the scoreboard confirmed that.

Although both Pokémon had taken injury, Halay’s confusion left her dazed and discombobulated. It wasn’t a good look and her contest points were steadily decreasing as the Dark Pokémon continued to make a mess of herself.
No, if this goes on I’ll lose all my points before Houndour faints.

It was still early in the brackets, but it was time to start pulling out the stops—
”Halay, hit the water then load ‘em up, H.E. Shells!

The haze of confusion once more complicated Esther’s plans: would Houndour have the presence of mind to recall the code-words they’d practiced? And would confusion interrupt her set-up part-way? Guess she was about to find out…

If Halay could act despite her fugue, then her next move would be to dive into the ocean and release thick clouds of «Smog» above the water.
