Also I'm struggling a bit to think of a backstory for the dwarf. He's heard rumors of a potential changing of the guard, as it were, and wants to try and get on the good side of the future ruler. That's the idea, I'm just unsure how to stretch that into 3 paragraphs.

Hmmmmmmm. Maybe you could expand on why he want to do something different from the others in his society ? Like since they are isolationist what circumstances lead him to want to take such a huge risk when he know no one will support him ? Was it necessity ? Or just his personality ? Maybe he has a fascination that isn't usual for his species ? Like how did he get enough resources (if he have them but since he managed to get to Blackrock he probably has some) to get where he is ? Btw what's his profession ?

Oh no that's right Blackrock is firmly in the middle of the country. My boat! What is a merchant captain without his ship! Anyhow, he's looking for an opportunity to get more riches, and he believes securing trading rights with several people within the upper echelons of a kingdom is a good way to do that. And he's not afraid to get his hands dirty, so a bit of espionage isn't off the table.
