Fantasy Beyond the Mist (RP)

Hours had passed since Akira had woken up, the sun had just begun to rise above the horizon. She was sitting on her bed staring at her bag packed with all her necessities for the trip that was ahead of Cailea, two others from their village, whose names she did not know or care to know, and herself. She was contemplating the path ahead of the four of them. Akira had been restless since the elders had told her that she and three others would be traveling beyond where the mist had been. Her wings kept beating open and closed ever few minutes due to her restlessness, causing a great gust of wind to rush around the room. Thankfully there was nothing to knock off the shelves or walls because she never kept anything in the room except for her clothes that were secure behind a door located right beside her bed.

She leaned forward and knitted her fingers together on her knees as her brow furrowed while resting her lips on her knuckles. She was excited, she had never felt excitement before and it somewhat scared her, which was also a new feeling. Akira was so accustomed to not feeling anything but indifference that she didn’t really know what to do with herself. Her hair whirled around her as her wings beat through the air again. She kept thinking about the places they would see, the people and creatures they’d meet, and the things they would learn. That was one thing she couldn’t wait for, learning new things, it had always fascinated her to learn new things.

After a few more hours of imagining what waited for her on the excursion she was bound for that very day, Akira finally stood up from her bed, grabbed her bag and headed for Cailea’s. She knew full well that her only friend would be up as well, they were after all quite similar. Once outside she flew past a few trees and landed on the respective porch just outside of Cailea’s bedroom window and tapped.

“Cailea, are you ready?” She said and took a step back and waited.

As the sun began to rise, so had Cailea's siblings. She spent all the time she could in these last moments before her departure into the unknown. With the lack of knowing if she would ever return combined with her unconditional love for each of them, every last second she could spend with them was precious as she loved them like they were her own children.

The bright glare of the sun was now shining through Cailea's window where she sat upon her bed with her youngest sister sitting on her lap as she told the three-year-old a simple fairy tale. The little one wasn't yet old enough for the stories that the other children enjoyed, the ones about her mother's, father's, and her own hunts along with numerous other tales that Cailea could provide from her experiences as a seeker.

That was when the tapping at her window could be heard and she turned towards the glass pane, one of her hands moving to press back some of the unruly strands of her straight brown hair behind her ear nearest the pane so that it wouldn't hinder her view as her eyes of blue and brown peered out to the visitor. Her full lips quirked a smile as she responded, "yes, I'll be out in a minute!"

She then turned her attention back to her sister and quickly finished the story without skipping anything before giving the little girl a heartfelt hug and kissing her head, "be good for mama while I am gone, okay?" she smoothed the child's hair back before cupping her face and the girl nodded, albeit a bit sadly. Cailea then picked her up and rose from the bed and into the main room of the house, handing the little one off to her mother and embracing the woman before offering her farewells to the rest of the Stormraven children.

They each had their own way of reacting, some begging her not to go, others expressing anger that she was leaving, some excited and asking that she bring them something back, but none of them let her leave without giving her a hug, even the eldest of her brothers who was only two years younger than she.

She collected her bags, a duffel shaped pack as well as one to be carried on her back before opening the door and venturing outside to greet Akira. Their worlds were both so different, it was a bit surprising that they still had so much in common as individuals, but despite Akira's lack of emotion, Cailea still cherished her as she did her family.

Akira watched through the windows of the house as Cailea said her goodbyes. It was strange for her, she realised that in a way she should envy her friend for having people who loved her, however she simply felt somewhat sorry for her because although she would never be able to feel what Cailea did by leaving her family to explore the possibilities of the world, she understood that it was and never would be an easy thing to do. It had also dawned on the young raven that in a way she did have a family that comprised of the elders as they had been the ones to raise her yet at the same time she knew that it wasn’t the same thing as an actual family. She also understood that the lack of emotions she possessed would always hinder her ability to have a real family.

As her friend made her way to the door Akira walked in the same direction. Once Cailea excited her home for what might be the last time in what could be years to come she gave a curt nod. Realizing that others would most likely say something consoling or ask if she was okay or if she needed anything, Akira decided to attempt such a common behaviour between friends.

“Are you going to be okay?” She looked at her different coloured eyes while she spoke. “Do you….do you need anything?” Akira continued awkwardly.

When she stepped outside, she returned Akira's curt nod with her own solemn one before she turned and shut the door to her home, holding her palm against the wood for a moment as though she were hesitating, her brow furrowed and the length of her short hair veiling her face until Akira broke her temporary silence.

Cailea could only offer her a mild expression that was marked by bemusement. Certainly this was not the only time that Akira had tried to express emotion the way others would and for Cailea it was relatively awkward because she never expected it, though the gesture and thought behind it was appreciated. Akira may not be able to express her own emotions but at least she wasn't blind to the feelings of others, "I am fine, but thank you," her voice was neutral in pitch, not too high and not to low and it was delivered with the sort of stoicism that she always spoke with despite whatever she may have been feeling.

With a brave face and sturdy posture, she moved away from the only home she had ever known, not venturing a glimpse back as her brown leather booted feet carried her over the wooden walkways and bridges that made up the paths of their skybound home, her steps imminently leading towards the outskirts of the village where the very first airship known to Ervas was docked.

What seemed to be ages ago, when the vote had been completed and it was shown to be in favor of exploration, several of the village elders had chuckled a bit smugly. It was soon revealed as to why when one of the elders spoke up and said, "you have won the vote, but now how do you propose we commit to it?" it was a reasonable question, after all, their weapons were of wood and stone and their settlements could be called anything other than advanced so actually committing to the vote they had won would present the real problem.

Over weeks of grueling discussion, the elders had finally come up with a solution. They would gather their finest crafters, the most innovative and unconventional of the lot and put them to work. The most creative of all of the villages of Ervas finally were able to come up with a solution to the problem of transcending the mist. They would build a massive ship unlike anything they had ever crafted before and it would be powered by the various caches of crystals that each village kept.

The gigantic construct that rivaled the size of the very beasts that roamed their lands, had required all of their resources and manpower from every village working together in order to achieve their end goal in a timely manner, now that end result was looming in the distance like some great beacon of hope and possible destruction.

The voices outside her head were drowned out by the voice in her head. The scream was unbearable, the merpeople around were trying to calm the scared High Priestess, it was unclear what was going on with her. The others tried to calm her, trying to be gentle as well. The last thing they wanted was for her to somehow bruise herself and infuriate the Royal family. The pale scaled being's body trembled still as if she were cold. Her hands pressed against the sides of her head, her eyes still closed and teary. The voices would disappear, it was slow, but they were leaving. The outside world was starting to become more audible. The servants' voices were becoming clearer, one voice sticking out.

Lunabella's scaly hands flinched from the warm touch, the touch of another. Luna's milk blues shot open, the tears still falling. She lifted her head, only to see nothing. Something that was normal of her. The images that formed were useful for guiding around surroundings, but terrible when it came to merfolk. Thankfully, she had other senses. Her ears picked up on the female voice, the voice of concern, the warming touch of something who had dealt with this before. It had to be her, her guardian. Yora. Luna opened her mouth to speak, but her voice was gone. Luna had been crying so speaking wasn't going to be easy at the moment. It wouldn't be long until she felt the warmth envelop her. A hug?

Lunabella gasped a bit before hugging Yora back, her tears drying up quickly, holding her closely. She was asking a lot of questions, then again, it was excepted for someone who was a guardian. Lunabella opened her mouth, words finally finding their way out, "It was her, M-Mother Crystal. She was speaking to me again. Then sh-she started screaming a-an-and I asked her to stop. But it got louder, and I...I just wanted it to stop." She said with a quickened tone, she was still a bit hysterical, her thoughts were everywhere. It would be a miracle if anyone was able to put that all together. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you w-worry." She said wiping her eyes with the back of her hands, trying to collect her composure and her mind.

Enzo

Enzo could only run so far before growing fatigued. Athleticism was not his strong suit in the slightest. He bent over panting as he desperately tried to fill his lungs with precious air. To make matters even worse, he could hear the hum of an airship approaching. The necromancer wasn’t far from the edge of the island and as he looked at the approaching ship, he noticed it was heading in that direction. A devious little grin stretched across Enzo’s face as he ran back towards the island's edge and waited for the ship to pass by. As the airship drew nearer, Enzo watched the ship approach his position at a steady course. Sparks of electricity began to arc between his fingertips. He ran forward on instinct as the the hairs of his body began to stand on end. A bolt of lightning struck the ground in front of the necromancer and in a split second he reached his electrified hand into the bolt and used it to rocket himself into the air. Unfortunately for Enzo, that was as far as he had planned. He soon came careening down onto the deck of the ship at break neck speed.

Several loud snaps and cracks were heard as Enzo hit the main deck of the airship full speed. A groan of pain escaped his maw as he struggled to roll on his back. Several members of the ship's crew gathered around the strange man as he writhed around in pain. It took Enzo only a few seconds for him to understand his predicament. When he finally realized what happened, he loud an angry yell.

"STAND BACK! I AM A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL!."

Enzo’s placed his hands on his chest and began to pump magical energy into his body. The broken bones slowly began to mend themselves back together. The magic wasn’t potent enough to allow Enzo to heal back to his healthiest, but it would allow him to walk at the very least. He arose to his feet and hunched over. Moundshroud poked his head out from behind the necromancer’s back and stared at the crew members with his hollow sockets. Enzo sighed in disappointment as he slowly came back to his normal, unusual self.

“One word out of you Moundshroud and I will throw you off the ship.”

Akira looked ahead as they walked, the tips of her black wings brushing on the wooden boards that made up the pathways throughout the village high in the trees. They slightly bounced with each step as her pack rested in between, the crafters of the village had come up with a pack years ago that she simply needed to tie the straps. For her it was rather convenient because as with a normal pack she would need the help of others in order to fit each wing into the straps.

Whenever Akira made theses attempts at normal behaviour it always seemed to throw Cailea off balance, she suspected that it was due to her not anticipating her friend to behave like others even remotely. Yet she still felt the need to do such every once in a while simply to remind her friend that although she wasn’t good with her own emotions it did not mean she was blind or unknowing to those of others.

“Well if you need to talk, or think out loud. I’m all ears.” As she spoke she had begun to make out the aircraft’s location that was to be their rendezvous point. “We’ll have plenty of time now anyways.”

The ship was large, larger than anything anyone on Ervas had ever seen. To better see the detail in the craft, Akira tucked a lock of loose hair behind her ear. It was the first contraption ever built within the villages that could fly, and although she had wings of her own that permitted flight, she had been anticipating the sensation of flying in such a mechanism. She couldn’t help but feel that it was a sight to behold and believed it to be an incredibly complex pioneer’s masterpiece and it intrigued her, making her curious about the possibilities it held. Not only those of the craft itself but of the power of the creative minds and abilities of the villagers. It took a great mind, or great minds to fashion something so inspirational and innovating. The structure of the airship, she could tell, was still rather primitive, yet seeing as it was the first successful attempt at such a mechanical technological form for the people living in the forests of Ervas, it was an incredible feat.

They finally walked up to it and halted. “Do you think the others are here yet?” She asked keeping her eyes on the ship.

Cailea nodded to Akira as she offered to listen if she needed to talk, the corner of her mouth on the side where a single dark freckle lay above her lip, quirked slightly in a smirk. Akira surely wasn't wrong. Who knew how long they would be aboard the airship before finding someplace where they could come down? Cailea not only wondered that, but as they crossed the long bridge that led to the group of trees where the airship had been built and currently sat waiting, Cai wondered if there was even anything else out there and whether or not the people of Ervas were the only ones that existed.

She didn't dwell on such thoughts however, for soon they had made it across the expanse of bridge where trees had been cut for building and it wasn't could to continue on with her negative thought process. Those dual colored eyes scanned over the airship where it sat atop the brace that had been built for it. They had tested the flying to see for one, if it would actually lift from the ground and for two, to see if it could in fact become mobile with the primeval steering mechanisms they had managed to construct.

In the long run she just hoped their tests would have been sufficient enough to ensure that this monstrous contraption managed to stay afloat at least long enough for them to discover someplace where they could repair if need be. She flung her duffel that contained her weapons over her shoulder where it rested against her pack, her head tilting back to look up towards the top of the ship, taking note of the various sails and propellers, all of which she didn't have a clue what it was called nor what it did to keep the ship in the air but what mattered was that it worked.

"I guess there's only one way to find out," she spoke softly as she looked first to the left, then the right before walking off in that direction. There were several crew members there, she was guessing these were the crafters that had constructed the ship and would likely be going along on the journey because they were the ones that could make the repairs and knew how to fly the thing. They were all using pulley systems to load crates of food and other necessities onto the ship atop a large platform and beside the platform that was currently in motion being heaved up the side of the ship by several of the crew that were pulling a rope down on the level that Akira and Cai were on, there was a rope ladder hanging off the side of the ship. Cai assumed that was how they were going to get aboard, or at least she would be since Akira could just fly up.

"See you up there," Cai stated before she shifted her duffel onto her arm so she could slide it up to her shoulder before she began to ascend the rope ladder.

Nico sputtered, and held out the water-skin. "Pffft, what makes you think I want to drag your scrawny butt around all day."

Her eyes narrowed as James uttered his threat, her hand settling onto her dagger as she sharply withdrew her water-skin.

"Hey, hey ... Can't pay for anything with sass, beanpole. Now, ask me nice ..."

Nico was mid-retort when her eyes caught something in the shadows behind James, something flickering, glimmering dimly with some inborn light.

Akira nodded keeping her eyes on the craft the entire walk even as she followed Cailea to the rope ladder. When they reached it she kept a few feet away knowing she would simply fly up instead of climb. What was the point of being born with wings if you didn’t use them? Even with her lack of emotions she couldn’t help but give a small smile at the corner of her mouth in regards to her friend’s comment. “I’ll wait.”

As she spoke she looked up and her wings flew open in one swift motion to their full with, each wing spreading a full 6 feet on either side of her small body in comparison. In one fluid movement they raised up and then down causing a huge gust of wing, causing all the dirt around her to whirlwind along with her hair and Cailea’s. She shot upwards and landed at the entrance to the ship within seconds. As she did so all the nearby crew’s eyes turned to watch her.

“Hello.” She said flatly and walked forward. She looked around to see who all was there and moved a lock of hair that had landed in the middle of her face back to its rightful position on the left side of her head. She notice that not everyone was a crew member. Several seconds later everyone continued with what they had been doing. There were groups of four standing in disconnected areas. It dawned on her that each group must be the four chosen from each village located within the trees of Ervas. After looking for a couple moments she saw a group of two and assumed it was the others from her village.

She slowly made her way over to them. “Cailea is on her way.” She stated to them and without waiting for any response walked back over to the entrance to await her friend. Looking down to see how far up Cailea was she noted that she was still only roughly more than half way up.

Taking a look around outside Akira couldn’t help but feel the first touch of sadness in a long time. The forest was a beautiful place that allowed for her to spread her wings as she liked and fly along its branches with the other creatures of flight, unlike the inside of the ship she was about to be trapped inside of for who knows how long. It had never dawned on her that she might ever leave the forest or that if she did that she would miss it. She watched as a few birds passed by and felt the urge to join them even though she knew she couldn’t.

Ignoring James' clenched fist, Nico finally handed over the waterskin, a smug look of self-satisfaction on her face. She had no idea, of course, that the new chill in the air had anything to do with her companion.

"Much better."

Once he'd returned the article to her, Nico slung it back across her shoulders. She still seemed rather pleased with herself as she slipped past him, moving deeper into the ruined hallway, toward where she'd seen the glimmering. Not turning to face her new acquaintance, the dark-haired girl addressed him none-the-less.

"So, what's your name anyway?"

The source of the glimmer was easy to find, it's light intensifying as she neared it, until it glowed with a steady, sky-blue light. She'd seen things like this before ... old-world technology that reacted to crystals of the proper element. The gem in question was set at the centre of a large stone eyeball, part of a much larger carving poking out of the sand. The head upon which the eye was set resembled some kind of bird of prey, and a cruelly hooked beak, showing heavy signs of wear and age, protruded from the statue's head. The rest of it remained buried under sand and stone.

Cailea didn't wait to watch Akira leap into action and fly up to board the ship, she did have a bit of a climb ahead of her afterall. She was left to her own thoughts as she made her way up to the deck of the ship, though her attention did turn from them and to the scenery surrounding the launch site. Those dual colored eyes looked off to her right and into the distance, at the world she had always known, considering that this might be her last time to see this scenery.

She had to pause for a moment, taking in a deep breath as she looked out over the treetops, watching the glow of the rising sun's burning reflection being cast off the highest points of the trees. She tilted her head to the side slightly as she watched, finally releasing the breath she had been holding and closing her eyes for a moment before she turned back towards the ladder and continued her ascent.

Eventually she reached the top, hoping over the edge of the ship with a heavy thud as her boots hit the wooden deck. She immediately set her bag down, allowing her muscles to rest for a moment, her arms stretching up above her head before she lowered them and rolled her shoulders, tilting her head from side to side as she stretched her neck before she retrieved her bag.

She passed by the other members of their group, giving a nod before she reached Akira and stood silently beside her, viewing the same sight as she and sharing the same feelings about the land that they would soon be leaving, though it was an unspoken thing, Cai knew what Akira was likely feeling as she looked out over Ervas.

Several minutes passed while they stared silently side by side out towards the direction of their home, all though it never quite felt like what others might call home. To Akira when she was flying it was home and leaving the wide open airs pained her, knowing that her friend, without even having spoken any words or showing any emotions, knew exactly how she felt. Akira turned towards Cailea.

“We should join everyone else.” She stated flatly walking away slowly, a little reluctant to leave the edge.

As she strode forwards Akira began untying to straps on her pack to be able to take it off, when untied she let the bag fall beside the other’s and halted waiting for Cailea as she spotted the others from the village.

“We’re all here now.” Only speaking loud enough so only Cailea could hear her. She raised her hand to signal to the two to walk over. And gave a slight greeting by giving a small nod to them.

Looking at Neko walk by him only feed his anger as he saw the smug look on her face.
"Its James if you must know"
he followed her into the hallway pushing pass her.
"What the heck are you looking at... oh. Its a eagle..."
he looks at the statue as the stone grew in brilliance but quickly backed off putting the stone back to a low glow. James looked around the room trying to find a fault and saw some holes in the ceiling.
"Back off it might be a trap. Look at the ceiling"

Yora would run a hand gently atop the palescale's head to try and comfort her and when Luna mentioned the crystal the Guardian's face would become serious, brow furrowing at the timing of this vision. York would remain silent for a time, trying to piece together everything and debating whether or not to tell Luna of her ordered absence; she decided not to – at least not right now, not in public, and not with poor Luna so upset and uptight. As if on cue, Luna's brother found his way towards the temple – to find his sister no doubt. He did not looked pleased to see his younger sister on the floor of the temple with tears in her eyes and practically in a fetal position on the floor. Yora would help the palescale up from the floor, her eyes turning to meet the wrathful glare of High Priest Cornelius...to which she quickly averted and continued tending to Lunabella.

Nico watched with wide-eyed interest as the gem reacted to both her and James' crystals, or at least, that's what it seemed like. A grin half-split across her face, and she wondered idly what might lay buried beyond the head. Forgetting that he'd pushed past her, she followed his attention to the ceiling, where a number of small holes had been bored.

They certainly looked trapish, but could they still be functional with the ceiling all-but-collapsed. It wasn't of much concern anyway with the floor, and the crystal-eyed statue buried. Crossing her arms, she stood and turned to James.

"We need to uncover it ... any ideas?"
Much like being pushed past, she seemed to ignore his concern about the holes ... well, that is, until she turned to step around the great stone head and a dart shot from the ceiling, triggered by some long-buried pressure sensor. The dart sank into the sand just next to her boot, earning a quiet shriek from the girl. After she'd relaxed she turned to James and offered a vaguely apologetic shrug.

James looked at Nico and then back at the statue and carefully went to the statue and started knocking the floor and putting his ear next to the ground. he did this several times around the statue while looking at the floor. satisfied he got to his knees and started digging.
"area should be clear around the statue. other then the pressure plate you triggered it should be safe unless..."
he murmured to himself several ways the statue itself could be trapped while digging.

It was a little funny that they both felt the same way about the place that they called home but for different reasons. Of course Cailea would miss her family, but she would also miss these lands that she had always known. There was a certain comfort to the wilds of Ervas, regardless of the dangers and the chaos and she would miss all of it.

She shrugged her shoulders as Akira spoke, not taking her eyes off of the landscape before she finally drew away from the edge and slowly followed after her friend. She was also reluctant, but it was mainly because she would have probably rather it just have been she and Akira going on this journey. Then again, she probably shouldn't look at the situation so negatively since she had met Jerva in a similar manner and that had been nice until the end. That might have also been cause for her reluctance, the fear of getting to know someone and then losing them like that and considering the uncharted territory they were about to enter that was a pretty big risk.

Cai soon set her duffel and pack side by side along with the others' and crossed her arms over the leather jerkin that covered her chest. It wasn't that Cailea was a judgmental sort, she just didn't like to be judged, much less have anyone she cared about judged. Considering hers and Akira's reputation around the village, she was wary of the two they were grouped with. She had heard of them by name when the Elder's told them who would comprise their group, but names couldn't tell one what a person was like and so she was on her guard.

Akira waited as Cai walked up beside her, she didn't like having to take the trip with so many others, she wouldn't have entire minded if the trip was just the for from her village, she had become accustomed to forced interactions with the others. The elders often brought over some of the villagers her age that weren't Cailea in order to have her interact more with humans and creatures that could actually speak and hold a normal conversation. She never really partook in them, usually spending 5 minutes with the person before they left with a made up excuse.Although the elders meant well and understood the way she was, she felt like they pitied her, along with all the other villagers, all but one, Cailea. She seemed to understand and acknowledge that Akira was never be good at showing or feeling emotions and that she would never really get better at it. She stood staring at the two villagers, she really couldn't remember either of their names, it wasn't that she didn't know the boys, it was more that she didn't care about who they were and what their names were.

They greeted the girls awkwardly and with stiff smiles, the one who looked older began to babble, and Akira couldn't help but think it irritating and unnecessary.

"Hey how are you two? Kinda sad to leave everyone back in the village behind but I'm so excited about the adventure and possibilities were about to witness. Aren't you guys. How did your families take you guys leaving? Mine didn't take it to well, my little brother cried for hours." He had been smiling the whole time but at the mention of his brother it somewhat faded. "Anyways this is so exciting." Akira had to resist the urge to simply walk away a the boy spoke, when he finished she said flatly. "I don't have a family." He then looked at her awkwardly. "Right sorry." and turned his focus to Cailea, giving her a look that begged for her to speak to break the tension. She couldn't help thinking that this boy was going to have a tough time with the two of them.

Nico followed suit and began hauling sand away from the statue, casting the odd wary glance up at the ceiling. Working with increasing vigour as they uncovered more and more of the statue, the strangeness of it's construction began to appear. As sand poured away from its shape, the strangeness of its construction became clearer and clearer. Roughly 3 metres long, the creature stood in a perched pose, it's wings pressed to its sides. The back was strangely shaped, with two seat, one before the other, built so that the riders would straddle the great bird's torso.

They hadn't quite uncovered the tail, and one of the feet had broken off, but this was most certainly a piece of ancient technology. Taking a few steps back, a grin plastered across her face, Nico peered into the great big eye of the beast, which burned with blue light now. Without a further word, Nico hoisted herself up and over a wing, settling herself into the front 'seat.'

Looking expectantly at James, the gypsy girl crossed her arms.

"well? Hop on ... let's see if this thing still works."

B Blazinghookshot

James quickly dug out the tail of the statue and looked at her and carefully examined the statue.
"OK two huge problems. One, if this is like other designs I've seen then were most likely going to crash land. Second it might explode."
Getting up he saw something under the tail and picked it up. It was a leather seat strap. He quickly set it up and sat behind her.
"Well screw it. The likelihood of it blowing up is close to zero so LETS DO THIS!"
He pumped his hands in the air trying to ignore the fact that he is afraid of heights.
