Being the Caretaker Again

Cooing at his Daddy's praise, Sam nuzzled in his Uncle's shoulder, holding Goldie in his hands.

"When is our Sam never a good boy?" the angel said warmly.

Growing shy at all the attention and praise he was receiving, the little one hid his face with the stuffed puppy.

"Aww. There's no need to be shy, Sammy. We love you so much, that we just have to give you lots of attention." Dean says, as he rubs Sam's back gently.

Cooing at his Daddy's words, the little one felt a bit braver, peeking behind Goldie and wetly kissing Cas' cheek and Daddy's. He loved them so much too: they took care of him and never got mad at him when he screwed up. They praised him when he learned new words and gave him toys.

Putting his friend in front of Daddy's face, Sam smiled widely and made little growls, "G-Grrrrr."

Dean grinned and peeked over the toy, chuckling at his little one's antics. "Oh, you know what, Cas? I was thinking about taking Sammy to the zoo tomorrow. Would you be able to come with us?" Dean asks.

"I believe so," the angel quickly answered, wanting to go somewhere with his nephew and friend.

Hearing the word 'zoo', the shaggy-haired baby's eyes widened and the next second he couldn't stop squealing and bouncing. He loved animals, but dogs most of all. Tigers, elephants, birds, you name it, the kid adored 'em.

So much for trying to suppress the little one's excitement...not that it was entirely a bad thing.

Joining in the hearty laughter of his green-eyed friend, Cas agreed, "He is not the only one."

Calming down some, Sam's squeals quieted down to high-pitched breaths, though he continued to bounce in his Uncle's arms. Hugging the angel, and then hugging his Daddy, the little one couldn't wait till tomorrow.

"T-Taanks, C-Cas 'n D-Dadd-ddy," the baby worded out, maybe he could get Daddy to teach him more words sometimes. Then he could talk more.

"Wow, Sammy, you're getting much better at your talking, buddy. Good job." Dean says, as he goes to grab a beer out of the fridge.

Giggling at his Daddy's praise, Sam squirmed a bit, wanting to be put down.

Complying to the long-haired one's actions, Cas set Sam on the floor, patting his back before going to join Dean.

Beginning to crawl on the floor, Goldie in hand, the little one pretended to walk the puppy, making the appropriate noises and taking him everywhere, showing Goldie his toys, blankets, stuffed animals (now Goldie's friends), and beloved books.

"Man, he sure does love that dog, huh, Cas?" Dean asks, watching Sam interacting with the stuffed animal. Maybe they'd get Sam a real dog soon.

Looking at his nephew, the angel couldn't help but chuckle, "Indeed. I look forward to his expression once you get him a real one, Dean."

"Oh, yeah, he's gonna go wild, Cas. I don't know why he likes dogs so much, but it's okay. It's not like it's something imaginary, or some fantasy creature." Dean says.

That was indefinitely better, the angel thought. As the two continued to chat about getting their precious little one a dog, Sam was sucking his thumb on his free hand, and talking to Goldie around said thumb.

"Go-Goldiie," the chestnut-haired baby cooed, before taking his thumb out of his mouth and building a tower of soft blocks, with his puppy-friend guarding it.

Dean smiled as he watched Sammy build a tower with his blocks, using his puppy as the guard. "Is Goldie the guard, Sammy?" Dean asks.

"Alright, Sammy, you want a snack, baby boy?" Dean asks, knowing that they had a long ride home, and that Sam still seemed hungry at the mall.

Nodding, Sam tried to stand, but his long legs wobbled and he fell, tears springing his eyes. He wanted to try walking, everything was going so good today, and then he screwed up.

Rubbing his face against Daddy's shirt, Sam whimpered as his tummy growled. He was hungry. And so was Goldie.

"Okay, let's go get you some ice cream, huh?" Dean cooed as he carried Sam to the kitchen and put him in his highchair.

Tears drying, Sam gurgled at the idea of ice cream, seeing Cas in the kitchen and smiling as he was placed in his highchair. Lightly patting the tray of said chair, the younger placed his stuffed puppy next to him.

Kissing his nephew's neck, the angel smiled, "You've been very good today, Sam."

"You wanna feed him, Cas?" Dean asks, handing Cas the bowl of chocolate ice cream, and a spoon. Dean had some things he needed to do, anyway.

Nodding, Castiel took the bowl and spoon, before sitting next to their precious little one. Scooping up some of the ice cream, the angel's lips turned up in a tiny smile.

Opening his mouth, Sam messily ate the confectionery, some of it dribbling on his bib, he cooed, liking the sweet taste.

Once the angel finished feeding Sam, he wiped the sticky mess away from the long-haired baby's face, before burping him.

Giving a series of gentle burps, the little one giggled, before grabbing Goldie and showing him to Cas.

"Yes, Sam. I see it. Are they your new friend?" Castiel already knew the answer, but he wanted to ask his nephew.

"Y-Yeah-ah," he replied.
