I went ahead and tweaked Luna's sheet to be readable, since I have no idea how the changes would make the sheet look when it was done.  As with all changes, there will be good and bad to it, and it will just take us time to get used to the new system.  Soon enough, we'll be plugging along, wondering what the big deal was all about.  Just so long as I can continue to post, I'll be happy!

Luna's character sheet looks really good, Sherwood!  Good job!   The only thing I noticed was Luna's crossbow; would you clarify that it's a light  crossbow +2 with Light on command (as opposed to a heavy; that's the sort of thing I'm liable to get confused with if it's not written down).  =)

Boy, I hope I don't have to go through each and every character sheet and rewrite them...  much less all of our previous in and out of game posts.   Of the three RPs I'm involved in, I haven't yet seen RpN 2.0 become able to read them as they should be.

And Wolf, I'm with you on this.  In many ways, I like this update, but in some ways I don't (the aforementioned worry is my only worry, but it's a doozy; I want to spend my time playing, not fixing two-plus years of our game data).

Sherwood, I hope you're right about plugging along.  I don't like all of us being stuck in this weird limbo of "when will RpN 2.0 read our 1.0 data?"

@Kaerri @Wolf Rawrrr @Sherwood @Captain Hesperus

O.K.  I need your input, my dear players.   I'll spoil a surprise for the sake of the fun and story.

In the next in-character scene after the Wayfaring Wanderers have gone through the Gate to rescue Shalin Riversbane, I had planned a sudden combat scene!  Fun!  Fireballs, axes, and arrows flying!  Oh boy!  We haven't had a good combat scene in too long, right?  Well, if RpN 2.0 isn't reading data from RpN 1.0, I'm about ready to scrap that idea and say that the Wayfaring Wanderers just show up after the battle.  To me, that's a downer.

On the other hand, scrapping the combat gets us playing again sooner.  Maybe much sooner.  Playing sooner means I keep the story that's in my head instead of losing it to time (this happens if I don't play for whatever reason; the story fades and I have to basically start over).  I can't just write the story down in My Private Workshop, either.  That's great for summaries, but not for my style of play where something can change at a moment's notice.

So...  how do each of you feel?  What do you guys think we should do?  Wait for RpN 2.0 to figure it out or move on with the story minus the combat scene?

I'm sure everyone's tired of being told to have patience.  I'm certainly tired of telling them!  So I won't say it.

Personally I'm inclined to wait because I don't think it'll be much longer, but that's just my opinion (on both the game and the time).  That's why I haven't adjusted any of my character sheets at all (the coding's in a bit of flux as all the backend stuff settles).

I also don't want to miss the battle and find something bad has happened that we maybe could have prevented if we'd gotten there during the fight as planned.

Have no worries on that note.  I'm not that kind of Dungeon Master.  If, for some reason Real Life intervenes like this (and I count this as such), then no in-game problems like that occur.  Put another way, you guys don't automatically fail a combat you had  no way of joining.  That's just plain wrong.  =)

I think I read this in a Dragon magazine many years ago - A good Dungeon Master lets either the dice or the players do the player-character killing.

I would love a chance to have a good fight. I, for one, don't mind having @Dannigan do the die rolls for us as we describe our actions. I have complete trust in you to do that. As much as I like the power of rolling my own attacks and damage, waiting until the die roller is up might be days or even longer down the road.

What are everyone else's thoughts on this?

Thanks a bunch, Sherwood ( =) ), but it's not a trust issue - I can't read your character sheets (except for Luna).  And last I checked, neither could anyone but Sherwood.  That makes combat extremely difficult.

Ah. That is a problem. So, we either wait and hope the reformat works, or everyone has to edit their sheets like I did.

Right.  And I have to edit a minimum of three character sheets (Bria's, Powerpaw's, and Mamapaw's) from top to bottom before I can even get started making the combat happen.

If RpN 2.0 suddenly starts reading everything properly, all this is a non-issue and we can proceed.  Otherwise, as Kaerri has pointed out, it's a waiting game.  The question is - how long?

Whatever it turns out to be, I appreciate your compliment in your second-to-last post.  Thanks, Sherwood!  =)

Well, hooray!  RpN's 2.0 site-loading speed is faster than it's ever been and looking back on a few pages of Sharseya in-game, I see that the site now understands our colored texts and the use of bold and italics.  Character sheets, however, are still in Yiddish...

Still, it's nice to see improvements!  =)

Wowser.

Do we have any idea at all as to when, if ever, the code is going to parse? I am willing to give it a few days, but if the span we're talking about might just as easily be hours, days, or months - then I don't think it's worth it. Editing the sheets manually is not that complicated. It's one for each of us and a few for Dann.

Additionally, let me once again express the deepest doubts as to the site/editor's capability to efficiently translate the old code. While it may parse the text colors and weight and all the basic tags, it probably won't get right the paragraphs and spacing, alignments, spoilers etc. In fact I am almost certain it won't.

For example in Amaranth, some stuff parsed and the editor decided to put half a post into spoiler tags, resulting in nested spoilers, one inside another, a dozen times over. With the thread saved like that, do you really think it will reverse-parse itself back into the original and retry to get it right? For all I know that might have even been it. If the engine is doing an alphabet run, then Amaranth has already been parsed from 1.0 to 2.0 and that is the final form. Amazing.

Wouldn't be surprised. I mean the images and basic formatting parsed. I do not expect there to be a second, enhanced wave of parsing that will redo it right. Yet the result is far from satisfactory.

So my point is, ultimately, that some adjustment will be necessary either way. Likely quite a bit of adjustment. So why waste days and possibly weeks waiting for a cleanup process that is going to leave you needing to cleanup after it anyway? Might as well do it all yourself now and save precious time.

And I don't understand why you'd need to cleanup the entire posting history of Sharseya when all we need are the character sheets, shop talk threads, info and such.

*woof*

p.s. dice rollers abound all over the internet, any one with a shareable link can temporarily replace RPN's

Get ready for another long post from your friendly, hyperactive Dungeon Master!  Wooooo!  =)

Thanks for letting us know how you feel, Wolf.  I didn't realize the situation might be that (for lack of better word) dire.  Yikes.

A few thoughts I'd like address here:

1. For the short run, you're absolutely right, Wolf - it's just a matter of each of us sitting down for (I hope only) a little while to fix our character sheets.  But in the long run, it's our unreadable posts that have me worried.  The biggest reason for me is because I'm into role-playing for the memories.  The "good times" if you will.  I really enjoy looking back through our posts, not only to keep things fresh in my mind, but to re-enjoy what we've done together all over again!  It just makes my day to relive and reminisce, especially with the people that made it happen.

I've been role-playing for most of my entire life and I'll die a role-player (get it?  Die?  /roll20 Ha ha!).  Like you, this is part of who and what I am and I love it.  Oh, how I wish RpN were around when Sherwood and Killfire had first started together!  We could look back at our adventures word-for-word...   Not to mention all of the other games I've been a part of!  We are talking about decades of gaming here.  If we had a way to write it all down like we do at RpN...  so much would not be lost to time...  =)

The thought of having to attempt to fix each in and out of character post here in Sharseya online is just staggering.  Gosh, I hope it doesn't come to that, but I'll try to do it if there is really no other option.  These are wonderful memories we are talking about.  Irreplaceable and precious.  10, 20, even 30 years from now, I hope to look back on these very days with you and smile all over again.  Will it happen?  Time will tell.  =)

2. Actually, I just realized (and it took me long enough!), the short run on my end isn't anything to worry about - I have been keeping my NPCs stats, updates, etc. offline on my PC here.   I was looking for a way to update their character sheets here on RpN 2.0 (perhaps with some of those snazzy Pathfinder online character sheets; boy, those make life easier!), but my NPC's data isn't in half the mess your character sheets here on RpN 2.0 are.  I wish I'd thought to copy your character sheets over...  That might have made this all a non-issue.

3. As for online dice rollers...  (incoming rant!  =)  ).   I just cannot bring myself to use them, good Wolf.  There is no way to verify the fairness of said rolls.  Yes, I trust you guys implicitly, but part of being a fair-minded Dungeon Master means also being my own referee.  On RpN 1.0, I could look up the die rolls (and did so for the sake of verification when it came up).  That way, there was no argument about the outcomes whatsoever.  Not like there would be with our relationships, but I run Sharseya online as close to one my tabletop games as I can.

With an off-site dice roller, I don't know how many times a player rolled before posting their result.  Cheating has happened in my tabletop games and I can't stand it, for it takes away my fun in a big and long-lasting way.  It did every time it happened, because now I had to watch and babysit these players and their die rolls.  An unnecessary waste of everyone's time.   I want these rules to be in place should we ever ask another player to join us.  If they roll their characters attributes, I need, as a Dungeon Master, to be able to say, "Yes, I can verify those rolls without a doubt."  No matter how they roll.

Many years ago, Kaerri rolled averagely for her half-elf rogue, Kaerri, but she rolled really good for Bren.  If another player showed up and said something like, "Oh, she's your wife.  Of course, her PC's attributes are high..." I can tell them to shove it because I was fair.  She rolled those dice in front of me using the same rules as any other of my players.  =)  My rolls for Bria were pretty good too.  Wolf's new character was also blessed with "nice dice."  I can rightly back them all.  =)

You may remember our character creation Conversation in RpN 1.0?  I gave you guys choices pre-rolled stats I had rolled myself?  I took Powerpaw and Mamapaw's attributes from the same choices you had and adjusted them for Large-sized ("Felane") creatures per my own tabletop rules.  I like being able to say that, but moreso, as a Dungeon Master, I must be able to say it.   I guess I'm "old-school" like that.  =)

4.  And with all that said...  I think it's time for me to let the cat out of the bag and tell you guys.    @Wolf Rawrrr @Captain Hesperus @Sherwood @Kaerri  I am seriously considering running a second game here on RpN 2.0. =)

Kaerri knows this already because we're married like that.  =)

The game is still in its infancy stages.  It will not be ready any time soon, but when it's ready, it'll be really good.  I want it to be every bit as deep and fun as Sharseya is.  It's a sci-fi game set in the Robotech world with a few major changes.  Call it an alternate Robotech world with a touch of Rifts (with all PCs being Robotech characters during the end the 1st Robotech War and the beginning of Southern Cross), and a few other nice things I dreamed up.  So, we're talking mecha (some transformable), Earth invaded and partially by giant warrior aliens.  The setting is a bit grittier and more profane than than the Robotech cartoon universe seems to be.   Think Fallout's post-apocalyptic universe with a little bit of Mass Effect.  Kind of like Sharseya, but set on Robotech Earth.  Open-world and open-ended.

The game is based on Palladium's Second Edition Robotech rules (all in all, much easier and straightforward than Pathfinder/D&D 3.5).

I have a neat idea concerning a team of highly-trained player-characters that start young with something very special in common.  They're basically out to change the course of Earth's history in a way only they can.  Do they do it?  That would be up to you.  There are also a few non-player characters I have that I'd like to see in the light of day again.   You could say I miss them.

Looking back, I thought being in 3 games was my limit, but having been in Grey's game, the real limit I see now was 4.  So... you could say I'm making the game as we speak and it's at the stage where it could be a real game if there is sufficient long-term player interest.  And if not, hey, I like creating these things just to make them.  I now have all of the Robotech 2nd Edition books and I'm just doing what comes naturally, I suppose.  You never know where the road of creation will lead you.

Again, I don't know if this game will become reality, but it will be real fun if it does.  This is why I asked for player feedback earlier in the month; sometimes, especially when I am making something new like this, I really need to know what I'm doing right from my players' perspective.  It's a perspective I can only get from you.

That said, do any of you have an interest in joining another long-term game like this?  What are your thoughts?

Wow.  That's a lot to process.  For me, the bottom line is this: I'm willing to do whatever I can on my end to make sure that this game doesn't die out.  I love playing Luna, and the in character interactions with both the PCs and NPCs are wonderful.  It makes me feel as if I know these people personally, which is quite a complement in the roleplaying skills for everyone involved!  I posted earlier that I have no problem with having Dann make all our rolls for us, from to hits and saving throws to damage.  I've gamed with him for longer than I care to think about, way back when in high school where the name Sherwood first came up as the last name of my character in his sci-fi game we were all in.  So there is my two cents worth about the game.

Now, the thought of a second  Dannigan-run game on RpN fills me with delight!  Especially since you said the magic words that speak to my Robotech heart: beginning of the Southern Cross era means Hover Tanks!  My personal favorite of all the transformable mecha in the series.  I am all for this idea, and let me be the first to toss my hat into the ring for it.

Thanks for working on that, Cap'n.  Do you have any thoughts on our aforementioned posts?  If not, that's fine.  You're Admin and I'm sure you're busy with the RpN 2.0 birthing pains.  I'm still really looking forward to what RpN 2.0 will feel like in a month or two.  Much smoother, I imagine.  I'm very happy with whatever DWiz (and Ghan, likely) did to get the site running so quickly again.  Look ma, no lag!  =)

Also a heads-up here.  Folks, I'm starting to reach a point where the story is slipping away.  Rather than let that happen, I'm going to go ahead and continue our game minus the combat (so don't worry about fixing your character sheets just to get this rolling).  I'd also like to get Wolf playing his new character sooner rather than later (thank you, Wolf, for your incredible patience).  Please expect an in-game post within the next 48 hours.

Sherwood, thanks for the feedback!  That kind of feedback is exactly what I'm looking for - specific details on what I'm doing right (as I think I've got a good hook on what I'm not doing right).

As for die rolling, I'm quite willing to roll the dice for all of you (though, I may, if all of you don't mind, ask you to choose the colors for the dice I roll for you; I want you to have as much say as I can fairly allow here!  Hah!).  Hope you're having a good weekend, friends!  =)

You are welcome, my friend.  Looking forward to the new posts.

I don't mind if Dann rolls the dice until Wizard pulls an on-site dice roller out of his hat. I know just how worrying using off-site rollers can be. I can't count the number of times I've misclicked the site's dice roller and gained two results, the second being better than the first and having to discard the second, better roll simply out of fair-mindedness (damn my honest heart!!!). And I know the frustration of having a cheater in a roleplay (not accusing anyone here), as when I was STing a game of Exalted way, way back, I had one player who would argue every dice roll I or other players made and then would be super-sketchy when she rolled her own, keeping the dice obscured while she 'counted them' with her fingers and always rolled just enough or higher to succeed in whatever action she was rolling for. In the end, I had to instigate a 'dice box' where people had to roll their dice so that everyone could count them. /shrug

As for the broken formatting, sadly a lot of the formatting addons were custom built for RpN on xenForo and, as such, could not be translated over to IPB. That is not to say that we could not see a return of something similar in the future, but that future is not right now.

Also, Southern Cross RP is awesome. Love me those hover tanks :D

Latest word I have is that the posts are as clean as they're going to get, unfortunately.  So I'll be working on Bren's (and Eadric's, Sherwood) character sheets later today.   I took a looksee into the current chapter, and for the most part it's just the tabs and headers (for those of us using the side-panel) that are screwy still, so there's that.

Dann knows, but he asked that I post here because I don't live with any of you so you don't hear everything he does ;)   I'm interested in his new game, if only because I love playing in his games.  This will be my second-ever Robotech game but Sherwood's has made me appreciate mecha more than I might have otherwise.

Looking forward to seeing Sharseya rolling again!

Capn', does that mean you are interested in joining my new game once it's up?  I don't want to read too much into your statement and get all hopeful (O.K., too late for the latter!  Heh!).  =)

Concerning cheaters, yeah Cap'n, I had one like that too.  That particular player didn't so much point out other players, but instead hoarded their own die rolling results and just happened to never fail any important roll.  I had them roll out in the open (which, as a Dungeon Master, is how I do it on tabletop too).  They didn't like that.  And lo and behold, their luck changed dramatically; their results became a lot more like the rest of ours.  Imagine that!  I can only hope that our leaving RpN 1.0's dice roller changes your own luck here in Sharseya online!  =)

In other news, yesterday Teh Frixz offered to join us here in Sharseya (via private message to me), but I'm O.K. with who we have here (I politely turned her offer down).

The day before yesterday, I tried to Hide Sharseya and ended up Hiding the entire roleplay from myself!  Hah!  Wonderful folks in the Staff quickly fixed the problem.  Now that your characters have been found and are here, I am going to try that nifty option of making Sharseya "invisible" to non-members.

It's a tentative 'yes', I'd need to know what the general basis of the RP would be: Does it follow the established R:TM timeline, does it differ in any significant way? Are you planning an original storyline in the setting? I've just this month started a full-time nursing job so my time is less my own any more, and I have to watch my commitments.

Captain Hesperus

First off, grats Cap'n on going full time in your nursing career!  Woohoo!  8D

Secondly, this game follows the Robotech timeline and is played on Robotech's Earth, but with two significant (and fun!) changes to the world of the player-characters (not necessarily to the world at large).

Thirdly, I can say more later.  Real Life is calling now.  I will start a Private Message Conversation with all of you (you too, Wolf, if you care to join us).  I like the ideas that I've created, but I feel more comfortable sharing them with you.  I will post more after my return tonight.  =)

This is a great song that really speaks to me.  Thought I'd share.

Oh, I uh, had a new character? Oh that's right! I did! Nearly forgot all about that *woof* Got two character sheets to fix, then.

I think I'll pass on the second game offer, though. I'm not into the robo/mecha scene and know absolutely nothing about it (except that there's transformers in it?), so it wouldn't make sense.

@Sherwood - cool song, my favorite part was the ladies *rawrrr*
