Yeah, I don't need to burn down the forest. That would not be a good thing.
Sooo... Ya'll think we're tough enough to do this? I mean, we can't just let Otiorin walk off into the dark to get killed and it doesn't look like the enemy is going to step forth after all.
This is the part where this Dungeon Master just sits back and watches the team come to a conclusion. =)

I don't really know what to say. Otiorin seems to have made his decision and is acting on it, and Bren doesn't want to force help on him against his tacit wishes. That's not to say the rest of the party can't do anything, but really, I'm extremely frustrated by the scene and the grugachs' total unwillingness to explain, listen, or even clearly state what it is they want, and I don't have any clue what to do about it.

I don't understand if they're willing to let him duel with their leader, only in private, or if they're just calling him in there to gang up on him and thus take him down more easily.

Either way, I hope you all realize these things cannot be trusted. The only outcome from Otiorin going to face them on his own is that we're gonna be one man less when they attack us later... The only thing we should be discussing here is how we are going to slaughter them, not if we're doing it. I was hoping for your opinion Kaerri, as an experienced adventurer *woof*

As an experienced adventurer... I dunno. :P

I do better in dungeon crawls and in social situations where people are willing to at least listen. Which these aren't.

I do have a some background on grugach in general, though I've only met one in-game, and she wasn't quite representative. Basically they're a whole race of xenophobes whose homeland got totally destroyed by an outsider they had trusted, which made them even more xenophobic, to the point where I'm actually a little shocked to even see them here. As far as I knew, every single one of them but the one I met was in the wood elves' Forest Eternal, way south of here.

I don't understand what it is they want either. They've gotten so mistrustful they won't even tell people what they want when they meet people they actually want something from, apparently. Bah. On the other hand, Dann reminded me (we had a rather extensive conversation on the subject earlier today) that if they'd wanted us dead, or wanted Otiorin dead, all they had to do was start shooting. We didn't know they were there until after we were surrounded. So, there's the possibility that they aren't immediately going to try to kill him, and maybe won't try to kill him at all if he satisfies whatever questions/demands/obstacle course they want him to go through.

As far as whether they can be trusted... That falls under "I dunno" too, I'm afraid. If the one I've met were here, I'd say absolutely, at least as far as (relatively) peaceful intentions on their part. But if the one I've met were here, she'd've spoken up already, I think, because it was Bren she met. Most elves of any kind (except drow, of course) tend to be at least neutral if not good, at least by their own culture's rules. The problem here is that the grugach are from a very different culture, and I have trouble relating to it enough to really understand where they're coming from. I do know they don't trust us (obviously!) but it's nothing personal. They don't trust anybody anymore.

Sorry if this doesn't help at all. It doesn't help me any, which is why I'm stuck in "I dunno" land, but maybe you can make more of it? Either way, you've the right to ask and you deserve an answer, so here's what I've got.

Dannigan: such a good GM, even his wife doesn't understand the thinking of the races he created...

Well, at least Oti has some chance of surviving. I mean, thus far he is blissfully unperforated by arrows.

Captain Hesperus

That, dear Cap'n, is a real compliment. Thank you! =)

Let me know when you are ready for me to continue? I want to make certain you are finished with your OOC conversation prior to me continuing the story.

Luna has done her part to help Otiorin get ready. Let's see what the elves do now.

Here's hoping Luna didn't just provoke a pincushion attack.

If arrows fly at Luna, then it's on and everyone's fair game. The only question would be how do Wild Elves prefer to be interred?

Captain Hesperus

(Heya folks! Here is an unedited little something before I go to work here. I couldn't help but write this; the opportunity was too good to pass up. Have fun and enjoy!)

*A sharp whistle blast pierces the air* "TWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!"

The camera focuses in on Dannigan wearing the black and white uniform of an American Football referee. Into the microphone he calls, "Offense, number 71," pointing at Luna with one hand while his other hand points, index finger extended, at his own head and makes circling motions, "Illegal use of spell, improbable use of spell. 15-yard penalty."

Moans and cheers can be heard across the packed stadium as the fans react. The pleasant, clear voice of a sportscaster takes the center stage as the camera focuses in on Luna.

SC: "Well, there's an unusual call. Fire mage, number 71, Luna Callen looking a bit bewildered at the call. Callen graduated from the Knowledge College in Summerset with high marks. This is her second year on the field in Sharseya Football League, and... here comes the ref..."

The referee stands at attention. "The play is under review." Some low cheers can be heard from the massive crowd.

SC: "Well, let's take a look at the replay here." In slow motion, wide-eyed Luna can be seen looking to Otiorin with him as her target as he walks into the forest and away from his party. He is nearing the Wild Elves. Expertly Luna casts a simple spell which outright fails, followed by another spell which is completed right as the play is stopped by the sound of the referee's whistle. "Fantastic technique on the part of Callen, but... yes... that's a Shield spell... and... yes, role-play fans, that's just not going to work. I can imagine there are some role-play veterans out there shaking their heads." The slow motion replay captures Luna attempting her second spell, "And there we have a Protection from Arrows spell being lifted up. Callen definitely has Taletreader's well-being in mind. You have to hand it to her - she has heart. And up goes the yellow flag from the ref."

SC: "Role-play fans, while we wait for the review, we'd like to thank you for tuning in to SFL, the Sharseyan Football League. These moments are brought to you by our proud sponsor, Paizo, originator of the Pathfinder game played by millions of role-players just like you. 'Paizo. It's your fantasy.'"

The camera shoots over to the Wayfaring Wanderers sidelines and to a quartet of smiling cheerleaders energetically waving pom poms and cheering. The Daughters of Summertime led by Bria perform a choreographed dance while chanting:

"WAY-faring WAN-derers!

Go go go!

BEAT those BAD guys to DA flo'!

WAY-faring WAN-derers!

Win da race!

SMACK those BAD guys IN DAAA FAAAACE!

WOOOOOOO!!"

SC: "The Wayfaring Wanderers cheerleaders never lack for enthusiasm. Always a smile on their side of the stadium." The camera focuses in on the referee as he walks back out on the field.

REF: "After reviewing the play, the call stands. 15-yards. Second down."

SC: "There you have it. Let's go to our veteran-in-the-field, Glider, for some Shop Talk. Glider, what do you see down there?"

Glider: "Hi, Bob! Talk about a thrilling game! I just can't wait to see how this interaction turns out between the Wild Elves and our home team, the Wayfaring Wanderers. Take a look at the Paizo board here to see what happened:

"Here we have the Shield spell, which Luna tried generously to cast on Otiorin:"

SHIELD

School abjuration [force]; Level sorcerer/wizard 1

Casting Time 1 standard action

Components V, S

Range personal

Target you

Duration 1 min./level (D)

Shield creates an invisible shield of force that hovers in front of you. It negates magic missile attacks directed at you. The disk also provides a +4 shield bonus to AC. This bonus applies against incorporeal touch attacks, since it is a force effect. The shield has no armor check penalty or arcane spell failure chance.

Glider: "Yes, honey-bunny, it's right there in red. A Shield spell can only be cast upon the caster. Luna's heart is in the right place, as always, but what she's trying just isn't possible through the use of that spell. And here we have Protection from Arrows:"

PROTECTION FROM ARROWS

School abjuration; Level sorcerer/wizard 2

Casting Time 1 standard action

Components V, S, F (a piece of tortoiseshell or turtle shell)

Range touch

Target creature touched

Duration 1 hour/level or until discharged

Saving Throw Will negates (harmless); Spell Resistance yes (harmless)

The warded creature gains resistance to ranged weapons. The subject gains damage reduction 10/magic against ranged weapons. This spell doesn't grant you the ability to damage creatures with similar damage reduction. Once the spell has prevented a total of 10 points of damage per caster level (maximum 100 points), it is discharged.

Glider: "At first it's easy to miss, you know, 'What's wrong with that spell? You can cast it on someone else!' but take another look - Otiorin's player has already stated that he is moving toward the Wild Elves, which by this time, the referee seems to interpret that he is away from the Wayfaring Wanderers as a group. If Luna is going to cast that spell, she is literally going to have to leave her own group, catch up to him, cast the spell, and then fall back to the rest of her group. I can see how that's highly unlikely, though her player may feel otherwise!"

SC: "Fantastic facts as always, Glider. For the fans here, how is your own adventuring career going nowadays? Any chance of seeing you out on the field?"

Glider: "Oh, out here in the wilderness I'm just a tight end, but not long after we adventure in the city of Highwind, I hope to be a wide receiver! Ha ha! Back to you, Bob!"

SC: "Ha ha! Glider's Shop Talk, everyone. Now let's take a quick look at the reactions of the Wayfaring Wanderer fans as the referee calls out that penalty."

The camera dives down upon Bonny and Whittle Meadowsweet who are standing on their seats, fists raised in anger, shouting down at the referee without mercy. "How dare you call a penalty on our dear, sweet Luna?! Especially two penalties at that! And for fifteen yards? Whose side are you on, ref?!" Then they begin to sing. Loudly. "You know, when I get old - and I can't see - I want to be a ref-er-ee!!" The ref just returns to his position and readies himself for the next play.

Stewart, still sitting behind them, reaches over in trepidation. "Saints knickers, will you two cut it out?! You are going to get us thrown out of here!"

SC: "Role-play fans, stay tuned after the big game to a special Sharseyan event. Olympic pool high-diving starring an unusual contestant, Skaagenrackner." The camera goes to a panned out view of the huge rock elemental in a pair of red Speedos jumping off of a 10-meter spring board and into a pool. His belly-flop empties the pool onto everyone in the stands while the judges raise score cards. 10, 10, 9.5.

SC: "Back to the Wayfaring Wanderers versus the Wild Elves in a game that can go in any direction. It's second and twenty-five from the Wanderers thirty-five yard line here on Roleplay Nation."

(@Sherwood. So is Luna really going to do all that to cast Protection from Arrows on Oti? Folks, this is a good time to chime in as a team of players. Until next, woop-woop!) =)

Um, ok. I'm at a loss for words and will need to process that for a moment.

*is still stuck on Skaagenrackner in a Speedo*

I'm at my tabletop game right now, so I'll have my modified IC post in a few hours.

Ok, I made a boo boo with the spells. With ST approval, I'll switch the spells to give Otiorin the Protection From Arrows, then cast Shield on myself.

I must also add that the post explaining the mistake was epic and sent a ray of sunshine into my life. Thank you for the laugh.

Does that mean Luna's running after him to cast, then?

Hmm. Forgot about that. Could I have Sparkle deliver it to him?

As long as you don't mind the possibility of putting her into danger, you can. What do you want to do?
