At the Adventurers' Table: Chapter Eleven

Status
Not open for further replies.
Regarding Psychie, I have no worries that either a private intro (a la Robotech: Broadsword) or a long chat in OOC. As for potential in-roads to the story, it could be that Oscar makes the introductions, Bren knows of them, we meet them prior to or during the dungeon trawl, or they happened to be in Highwind and heard that a legendary Elven weapon has been brought to the city and the bearer is seeking out another weapon of prominence. Of course, this depends on Oreleth's interests.
Regarding Bren's amassed fortunes: Bren is a long established character, a noble and prominent figure in local circles. It stands to reason he has vast sums of untold wealth and magical baubles to lay his hands on as need requires. I have no issues with him delving into those to supplement his current loadout.

Captain Hesperus

Thanks, Cap'n! =)

I'll post some thoughts here hopefully later today, and I hope to post in-game within the next day or so.

So, what's an ideal solution? Do I create a prologue for Oreleth (Psychie's character) and we one-on-one it for a few weeks while you guys go shopping (which, by the way, has its own little roadblock which I'll cover in section 2 below)? Should Kaerri, Psychie, and I start a nice long talk here in Adventurers' Table and have Psychie meet the Wanderers sooner? Any other ideas out there, friends?
I'd like to point out that Bren has actually been to the Forest Eternal, home of the wood elves. It's plausible they met while he was there, or on the road to/from along the way. And it would not surprise anyone if Bren picked up another elven friend - the number of elves in parties he's joined long ago reached "ongoing joke" status! A bit of OOC discussion to straighten out the details, then perhaps we run into her here in Mielikki's temple? Closest thing a wood elf would find to homey, in Highwind, so it would make sense to me that she would at least visit. Would Oreleth be interested in doing a hazardous mission for Mielikki? Has she heard of the goddess's return and wants to help? Or is she one of the lonely faithful hoping for the return of Mielikki's hunt-god husband Tapio, and Mielikki's clerics direct her to us knowing we're headed out on that goal?
Kaerri and I are in the process of talking about these items (as in which are available and not) and how a few of them might enter the Wayward Wanderers.
I'm personally hesitant. Yes, Bren earned these in his former career, but this is not just a story, it's a game, and I'm concerned about balance (which is properly Dannigan's problem, not mine), and this is an RP, meaning we're all in this together and I don't want to risk overshadowing you guys just because my character has been around longer. But if you're happy, I'm happy, and I trust Dann on the balance issue.
My issue with the shopping is that I am dealing with expensive tastes and a cheap budget. Luna just got a major boost to her character sheet in the form of her Wand of Scorching Rays, so I would be in the market for extra armor to keep me alive and well as our intrepid team deals out the hurt on the bad guys. Also, we have never had the chance to delve into the prismalcum ore that we have. I would love to have a good pair of bracers from that to try and boost my AC, and see what else it can do for me. Do we have enough time to have it worked on?
I don't think we'll have time to get the prismalcum worked on, but we can definitely "place some orders" as it were for when we get back. Then again I could be wrong and there is time - but we can ask! Without Bronze in the party, Bren would suggest taking it to Ben, the smith who (with his wife Misha) runs the shop I wanted to go to anyway.
I have no issues with him delving into those to supplement his current loadout.
I'd like to mention that Bren is also hoping to supplement the rest of the team, if possible. I don't recall there being any mage gear, unfortunately, but there is a weapon Dannigan and I have been discussing to replace Powerpaw's broken one, and the gold and gems could come in handy for shopping.

It sounds to me that it would be fairly easy to say that Bren and Oreleth know each other from meeting in the Wood Elf home, and he would know her story and her quests to better herself and find other survivors of the minotaur raid that wiped out her family. He would also know of Oreleth's martial skill with the bow, and so having her join in the party wouldn't be too much of a stretch. I like it.

Closest thing a wood elf would find to homey, in Highwind, so it would make sense to me that she would at least visit.

I misread this both times I read it. I read, "Closest thing a wood elf would find to a homey, in Highwind..." (bold and underline mine). I'm thinking, "A homey as in a homie? From, y'know, 'round da way in da hood? And right then my hyperactive mind made a scene.

Bren in EarthHome: "Wazzap, homie!"
Oreleth: "Oooh, izzat Bren? Summaset Bren? What'choo doin' slummin' up in here?"
Bren: "Giiiiiirl, am I da Elfie-magnet or am I?"
Oreleth: "Fo shizzle, baby-pops! Hey, you gotta crew I can hook up wit?"
Bren: "Sho do, home-girl. Keep yo eyes on da master..."

Bren to Wayward Wanderers: "Hail, friends! A dear friend of mine from the Forest Eternal is here to aid us! What say you to having her add her bow to our adventures?"
Oreleth whispers to Bren: "Daaaaaaaaaamn, boy! Yo sho is smooth!"
Bren: "Dats why I'm da Paladin, giiiiirl!"

Without forcing me into the group, if we could start some kind of intro to help me get introduced to the group, I think that would work better.

Okies. Three things I should point out here:
1. This would be an easy way for Psychie's character to join us here in Sharseya. "Hey, I'm a friend of one of the PCs!"
2. "Hey, I'm a friend of one of the PCs!" has to be the oldest and most-overused excuse to get someone into an existing party in a Dungeons and Dragons game. =)

It works because it's quick and handy! However, it doesn't work because PCs often don't provide backstory (which many games, unlike ours, don't care about). Remember - two PCs are now saying they know each other to some degree. They are saying they know each other well-enough to trust the new adventurer with the rest of the party's lives....

But, far more importantly, what happens if or when the new PC screws up? I mean really screws up?

Allow me a little made-up example, based on experience, for your amusement. =)

Dungeon Master: "All right, players. After several months of painstaking and expensive searching, you guys have finally found the hostage who has the secrets of the legendary super-guns you all dearly want. Problem is, he's chained up against a gigantic propane tank. The nasty gang of assassins, put away their guns and, all armed with dangerous-looking melee weapons, challenge you to a big martial arts battle right there and then! They have you outnumbered three-to-one and their big boss is taunting you! What do you do? Leader?"

Party Leader: "O.K., team. You know the drill. Take out the little guys while I keep the big boss occupied, then release the hostage--"

New player: "That'sa lotta baddies, but don't worry, guys! I got this! Hey, DM? I use my grenade launcher on that big-ass propane tank!" *before anyone can stop him, he rolls a d20 and hits, blowing away half the bad guys and the poor hostage.*

Guess what happens next? You got it. The rest of the players look NOT at the newbie, but instead the PC who backed the newbie and descend into this (replace the video game with a copy of Players Handbook and just try not laughing when you see this gif. Hah!):

Angry Gamer.gif

To be fair, the new PC gets their share of the gripes, but the poor guy or gal (not so much for gals) who did the inviting? Oh, they might never hear the end of it! Which leads us to #3...

3. I don't mind Psychie and Kaerri doing this! On one condition: Kaerri and Oreleth, either here or in Conversation, create Brendoran and Oreleth's background together and relationship. Also, Kaerri, if you could teach Psychie a bit about playing Wood Elves in Sharseya? You are more than a good person to ask about that. Plus, if you want me involved, I can help too. Psychie has only a little idea of who these people are and how they tend to go about life. I don't want Psychie to just play a standard "blah" elf fighter; I want her to experience playing a Wood Elven fighter in Sharseya.

In other words, give me something to work with and I'll try this your way. Otherwise, we work out another way.

Psychie Psychie Kaerri Kaerri Is it a deal? Any questions from anyone? =)

Unfortunately, the best mage gear died with the dumbass PC who knew better mage, I'm afraid (and Kaerri knows that particular story all too well).

I'm personally hesitant. Yes, Bren earned these in his former career, but this is not just a story, it's a gane, and I'm concerned about balance (which is properly Dannigan's problem, not mine), and this is an RP, meaning we're all in this together and I don't want to risk overshadowing you guys just because my character has been around longer. But if you're happy, I'm happy, and I trust Dann on the balance issue.
(bold mine)

This. I really appreciate this. Not just from Kaerri, but from all of you. For every hour I'm here typing, I must do about two or more off-the-keyboard creating what I'm typing. I like to think I have balance down pat, and most of the time I do. Still, it feels good to hear you guys say it. =)

I am lookin' forward to chillin' with Bren's new homie in da 'hood, yo! I be like, "What up, brah?"

Seriously, however you guys set it up, I'm good for it.

OMG! I actually laughed out loud when I read that! Yeah, buddy! I be down wit' my bad self, chillin' with the homies! Ha!

This sounds quite good to me. I would suggest we make a PM between the three of us to keep from bogging down the OOC boards. That way, Kaerri and I can make up the details of just how well Bren and Oreleth know each other, how they met, are they friends or rivals, that kind of thing, and with Dann added in, he can be his good ol' Storyteller self and be on the same page as the two of us.

I really like the idea of getting some more knowledge of how Wood Elves live, think, and fit in to the world of Sharseya, so I don't accidentally step out of character and need to edit a post to correct my mistake(s).

OK, well, first, and I'm sure everyone knew this but I just have to say it - Wood Elves don't talk like that. >.> (But Highwind's minotaurs do!)

Second... I'll just get that PM going? ^;3^

Along that line of thought, would that make Rivendell ‘the last homie house in the East’?

Captain Hesperus

Captain Hesperus Captain Hesperus Cap'n, your character sheet remains a wreck-in-progress. Did Otiorin ever get trained for 10th level? If so, which classes (rogue/sorcerer) did he choose?

Would you like my help (or someone else's) in helping put that all together?

My character sheets are still up for grabs in the form of a template, if anyone (Captain) is interested. As I said once before *woof*

Thanks again for offering, Wolf. If anyone knows how to make (or fix) a good character sheet around here, it's you. =)

I really would appreciate the help. I'm trying to use Wolf's template, but my eyes/brain can't wrap around it too well.

Captain Hesperus

Wolf Rawrrr Wolf Rawrrr Wolf? Since it's your template, do you want to be first to help him out with it? My own computer skills are maybe about average.

Well there's certainly people on here who are arguably better than me. It's just that they tend to go for very heavy customization effects, like scrolling text boxes, fancy buttons and backgrounds etc. but in my opinion it tends to look too flashy/clashing between the shapes and colors plus loads more slowly. So I prefer to go for minimalist designs that focus on the actual content and readability rather than pure aesthetics. Of course I would never say that out loud in the BBCode workshops... :P *woof*

To get back on topic, I'd love to help out Captain. That said, apparently the background image on my sheet has gone bonkers. I get a spam of missing image thumbnails, despite the file being normally accessible (just tested) so I suppose the HTML code used to produce it is no longer supported in this new RpN update. I'll see about fixing that first.

I see that you've already gone and copy/pasted my sheet Cap'n. I'm not sure what's the problem at this point, but if you want I can try to fill it out for you, then send you the code via PM. Otiorin's info is quite messy but technically speaking it should all be there. Not that I haven't seen a worse pile of code, mind you! *woof*

The problem is I can't see the stats for the code. A combination of new meds and needing new glasses is making it nigh impossible to pick it all apart.

Captain Hesperus

Not to worry, Cap'n. I got your six *woof*

Now, attached to the bottom of this reply you will find the code for Otiorin's recreated sheet. I included some comments in red which you should delete as you resolve them, alongside double-checking everything else for data that still needs input (like Signature Abilities!), as well as checking for mistakes/inaccuracies in general. Though I have to say, I've tried really hard to be accurate. I didn't rush this at all, especially not the skill ranks table.

The part that totally confuses me is what's at the end of your original first tab. Looks like a lot of racial/class notes bundled with the weapon/armor proficiencies that I can just about barely separate into lines - you'll have to merge this data with the sheet on your own, where and how it's supposed to go. Note that some may be irrelevant or duplicate. It's confusing for me since it appears to contradict itself at times and I just find dual-classing too complicated (which is the real reason why I never did it). Here it goes:

Half-Elf notes:

+2 to one Ability score
Base speed: 30'
Immune to sleep effects
+2 racial saving throw vs. enchantment spells and effects
Skill Focus bonus Feat at 1st Level (Perception skill)
+2 Perception Low-light vision, can see 2x normal human in dim light Counts as Elf and Human for effects related to race
Can choose two favored classes at 1st Level, gain +1 HP/skill point when taking levels in either class
Rogue (4th Level) notes:

Weapon Proficiency: All simple, plus hand crossbow, rapier, sap, shortbow, shortsword
Armor Proficiency: Light, not shields
Special: Sneak Attack +2d6, trapfinding, evasion, rogue talent x2 (Combat Trick: Weapon Finesse, Bleeding attack), trap sense +1, uncanny dodge
Sorcerer (4th Level) notes:

Weapon Proficiency: All simple
Armor Proficiency: None
Special: Draconic (Silver Dragon)
Bloodline Power (Claws), cantrips, eschew materials,
Bloodline Power (Resist Cold 5),
Bloodline Spell (Mage Armor)
Spells per day: Lvl 1 x 6, Lvl 2 x 3 (Lvl 0 Unlimited)

You are likely going to want to add a new tab for spells. Maybe. You may copy Nivirea's superb spell table but since Otiorin isn't a dedicated sorcerer and has fewer spells, I think you can just wing it. Simpler that way.

That said, sorry but you can't have Wolf's brown theme! Nooo! Here's a nice grey-blue to match Otiorin's eyes instead. The easiest way to replace this color throughout the sheet is to copy/paste the raw BBCode into Notepad++ and then do a Find/Replace (CTRL+H). The curent color is #475577, so if you wanted to make it red you would search for #475577 and replace it with #ff0000. Then simply copy/paste the results back into the sheet on RpN). Apologies for the redundant tutorial if you already knew this :/ *whine*

Now excuse me, but I think all the Baileys Irish Cream that I consumed is slowly starting to hit home, so I'll sit back and enjoy my impending intoxication *howl*

This is what the sheet looks like right now, and at the very bottom you will find the raw code for copying:

  • Name: Otiorin Tale Treader
    Race: Half-Elf
    Sex: Male
    Age: 22

    Class: Rogue-Sorcerer

    Hair: Nut-Brown

    Weight: 140 lb (64 kg)

    Alignment: Chaotic Good

And finally, the code for copying:

Benefit: Description goes here!
Prerequisites: Prereqs if any

(the following was originally under your Feat section, and should definitely be easier for you to recreate than for me. Looks like the names and descriptions have been scrambled. BTW: I left Wolf's acquisition history underneath as an example, make sure to replace it with Otiorin's, it was one of the things Dann was specific about having to be there)

(this is 100% copy/paste of your old history, all I did was insert paragraph breaks where it made sense to do so)

The tale of Otiorin Taletreader.

Otiorin's tale began with his birth in the Grey Elven kingdoms high in the mountains. His mother was of Elven birth, but his father was Human, a distinguished if diminished heir to a throne burned in one o
f the many wars Humans perpetrate upon each other. Otiorin was not greatly interested in his father's ancestry growing up, his mother's lineage was far more interesting and rich with history. As a boy, Otiorin was noted as having a fanciful tongue. He was able to weave fantasy and reality into his words with such seamless skill, some were always worried which words tripped from his able tongue were truth or falsehood. This state of affairs did not trouble Otiorin overmuch, he enjoyed the notoriety as he matured into a young man.

In the rest of his world, however, things were far from rosy. This was due, in the most part, to Otiorin's inability to settle and focus on a task. It drove his parents almost to distraction that he would take up a hobby or profession, perform it for a while, then discard it when it appeared he seemed to be doing well at it. His mother fretted that he had some malady of the mind, but in truth he had simply become bored. Each task he turned his hand to, beit playing the lute or economics or history or swordmanship, swiftly sapped his will to learn and he would quickly lose enjoyment and drift away from the lessons.

It was with a heavy heart that his mother suggested that he should perhaps experience something of the human world beyond the safety of the mountain kingdoms. The suggestion at first appalled Otiorin, but as he took time to consider it, he felt a surge of excitement welling up within him. Maybe his mother's suggestion was exactly what he was looking for! For so long he had abided in the Elven lands, among people who drifted timeless as the rocks around them, unchanging and content. The atmosphere was.... stale, stagnant. While Elven music was full of life and vibrancy, the people were stoic and immobile. While the wines were rich and full-bodied, the people were rarified and dry. Yes! Otiorin had heard tales of the Human lands, where there were places a man could purchase a heady brew and a plate of well-cooked meats, have every whim served by pretty wenches and entertained by talented minstrels. Where all avenues were open to those with the right skills and their coffers would swiftly be filled to overbrimming with coin and gems.

Otiorin left with almost unseemly haste, his meager possessions supplemented by a weapon gifted to him by his mother as a means of protecting himself on the roads. He entered the first Human settlement he encountered in high spirits, expecting all his dreams to be fulfilled. He was greatly disappointed. The settlement was little more than a habitat for mud farmers, those dwelling there dour and suspicious of the bright young Half-Elf who appeared in their midst. Women dragged their daughters back within-doors, whether they were pretty, ugly or indifferent and the fare at what he assumed was the inn consisted of a watery beer that had hints of vinegar in it and a thin gruel that was even less appetising that the persistent rain that swept the streets outside. Otiorin was about to give up on this grand adventure in the Human lands when a trader's caravan rolled in to the village. The leader of the caravan recognised the young man for his ancestry and invited him to talk. The trader had had dealings with the Grey Elves in the past and was willing to spirit Otiorin away to a town where he could better experience Humans and their world. This village, he joked, is still living in the Dark Ages. Again opportunity knocked and Otiorin not only opened the door, but he took it's cloak and boots and settled it by the fire.

A week's travel brought Otiorin to a large settlement where he parted ways with the caravan. This was more like it! It wasn't up to his fullest expectations, but it was close. Otiorin had the time of his life in this place, dining well each evening and, more often than not, sharing a bed with a comely lass. But the few days of the high life abruptly ended the moment he felt the bottom of his coin purse. The minute he spent his last few coins, his world closed in. He was suddenly not so welcome at his regular haunts and his plate was less and less piled high. He resolved he should find work. After all, were not Human lands replete with folk seeking a talented employee? Sadly not. After a failed attempt at being a minstrel, a silversmith, a stablehand and an hour as a dunnykin-diver, Otiorin determined he was not meant for usual avenues of employment.

As he roamed the streets at a late hour, he glimpsed a shadowy figure drifting across a rooftop. The dark-clad form flitted from casement to window, deft hands working the panes and shutters and, with lithe, silent movements, entered within and exited moments later. A rogue! Otiorin watched entranced, as the cat-burglar finished their job and disappeared into the night once more. That was a job to do! Excitement, danger, money! All the things he was seeking. With his natural agility and skills, Otiorin considered himself well-suited to a life crossing the benighted tiles.

Thus he embarked on the career of a rogue. During his work, he also discovered an aptitude for spontaneously drawing on the magical nature of his mother's heritage, distracting a guard-dog with a series of spectral sounds in the near distance to draw it away from his hiding place. Otiorin did not question these powers, instead using them to his advantage in his profession. Otiorin continued in this line of employment for some months, at first working to fill his own purse then, as he became visible to the underworld agents, taking contracts to steal to order. These contracts were always taken through intermediaries, since neither he nor his clients wished to be too familiar with one another.

And yet, as his wealth and prestige grew, Otiorin's old curse began to rear its ugly head. Apathy and boredom. His skills were more than a match for most of the guards and defenses of the locations he burgled and the local authorities, despite having some inkling of his identity, had little evidence to link him to any of the crimes. Otiorin, for his part, had become interested reading about the various ancient tombs and abandoned dungeon complexes that adventurous types sought out for the chance to unearth great treasures, deadly traps and dangerous foes. This was starting to get his attention far more than his nightly forays across rooftops and through windows. He started to visit a variety of establishments in the town, known to house and support adventurers who passed through on regular occasions, striking up conversations with many diverse groups but not really meshing well enough with any of them to really fit in. That was until he saw a table in the snug of The Unfurled Banner.

At the table, there was a young Human woman, dressed in light robes he could identify as a magic-user of some description, a Halfling lady clad in sturdy armor, a burly-looking human man dressed in hard-wearing garb and smelling of smoke and iron, another Human man with a dour face and the look of years spent under the sun and rain, along with what appeared to be a Human warrior and a cleric of some description. Otiorin had never really been one for religion, he'd only really attended the temple back home when his mother had hauled him out to worship and, even then, he'd tended to doze or be distracted by the young female acolytes accompanying the cleric leading the services. With a round or two of drinks and a few hours of haggling, Otiorin managed to get himself a 'trial run' with the group, acting as a scout and trap-handler for their next foray. Otiorin was well pleased with the outcome and hoped it would give him more of what he was looking for.

Captain Hesperus Captain Hesperus Cap'n, please bring me up-to-date here.

1. Did Otiorin train for 10th level. The last time I remember him training was for 8th level.
2. Are you happy playing him as a rogue/sorcerer?
2a. If so, are you also all right with his current levels in each class?

I am asking because the timing in the game is right if you wanted to make any major changes to him (Mielikki is here and willing to help after all).

3. Also, I will go through your character sheet again to make certain the numbers are correct. After a short glance, I noticed Oti's gold seems to be his starting gold. That can't be his current amount. Do you agree?
