Futuristic ARK: Survival of the Fittest (Closed)

"I just want to better how we live. Make our lives easier," she answered.

"Relax!" Roan said, raising his voice a bit. He had fastened the harness together with a few simple yet sturdy knots and began to untie them, "I was just making sure. I dont need the attitude."

Well that was no good, everyone wanted that. "No, I mean right now," Jack stopped Vera to look her in the eye, "Right now, in this moment," he pointed at the sand between their feet, "What do you want?"

Anna flinched under Roan's tone, usually he was so meek. "I'm sorry!", she apologized hastily.

Vera thought for a moment. Her eyes trailing from his eyes down, stopping at his lips. She smiled a bit, "How about a kiss?"

Roan sighed, releasing what irritation he had built up. He voice was now quiet, but held an air to it that sat as a warning to others. He was calm but he was still bothered. As he unfastened the last knot, he let the harness drop from around Anna, "There. It's off."

"That's a start," Jack smiled and leaned down, putting his arms around Vera to pull her close, and planted a kiss on her lips as the wind picked up, blowing Vera's hair around.

"Thank you." Anna stepped out of the harness and picked it up, setting it over the railing of Roan's porch. She turned back to Roan and looked like she wanted to say something, but Roan's surprise outburst was scary enough she didn't know if she should.

Vera hummed, kissing back as the wind began to blow. This was unusual, she thought, but she didn't care. She felt invincible with his arms around her.

Roan was quiet for a moment, "I'm sorry.... I shouldn't have lashed out.. its just been a long day."

He waited another moment before trying to make light of the situation, "If it makes you feel better, the birds and the harnesses have been battering me all day. So its kind of like payback."

In the wind, the dark clouds on the horizon were beginning to approach the shore. "Ah," Jack paused when they separated for air, "Should we, should we go back inside?"

"Um," Anna looked down at the ground, "You just surprised me, is all..." She looked up at Roan and smiled, "It was nice." It wasn't as terrifying as it had seemed in the moment, as surprises tended to be.

"Its probably a good idea " Vera said with a nod, "I dont really want to get caught in a storm."

Roan gave a small smile, "I think I have plenty of bruises to prove it. I thought I was going to die earlier."

"Alright," Jack smiled and got down, offering Vera a piggyback ride. "Climb on."

"I meant..." Anna paused, "Normally me or Jack's calling the shots." She shook her head, "I'll take a look at your bruises if you want."

Vera giggled, climbing onto Jack's back, "Take us home!"

"Sure. Lets go inside." Roan said, leading the way into his place, "I dont really like barking orders, honestly. I prefer to give and take ideas. Work as a team."

"Hang on," Jack got up, reached behind him to hold Vera's thighs to help support her weight and started jogging back home. Waiting to be let back in for shelter from the coming storm, was Janus. Meatloaf had already run back to her kennel, and the direwolves were working their way under the beams of the houses with wooden foundations to take shelter from the rain. Rockey and the parasaurs huddled against houses in anticipation.

Anna followed Roan into his place, "But it was..." she realized she didn't have a word for what she thought of Roan's sudden taking charge, "...cute." That didn't feel right.

Almost as soon as everyone was inside a house, the bottom fell out, and rain poured down, rattling the thatch rooves and running off of Jack and Vera's wooden one. The three argies had thought they could just fly away to a more sheltered area, but the winds were a bit rough for flight up here, so instead they took shelter by huddling on the porches of Roan, Anna, and Vera's former houses.

"Well now I can't get out," Anna sighed when she saw the bird blocking the way. She turned to Roan and shrugged, "Mind if I sleep with you for the night?"

In the big house, Jack was laughing when he and Vera got inside and he let Vera down from his back. "Looks like we got in right on time!", he said as he closed and barred the windows and doors on the ground floor.

"Perfect timing," Vera giggled, "One more second and we would have been soaked."

"Sure, I dont mind." Roan said as he took his chest armor off. Sure enough, his back was littered with patches of blacks blues and yellows that all came together to form several large bruises. He had mentioned earlier gettingnthe wind knocked out of him, "I can make you a bed if you want."

"Hehe," Jack smiled, not that he would have minded if they'd gotten rinsed. "I'll start the fireplace up," he said as he went upstairs to board those windows shut against the storm and light the fireplace. The main floor of the upstairs area was still pretty bare, just boxes for storage near the windows and up off the ground. That didn't really matter when it was just Jack, Lil' Chicken, and Janus, but now it was Jack, Lil' Chicken, Janus, and Vera, and he got the feeling they would need somewhere comfortable to spend time together besides the bed. Maybe he'd work on building that 'couch' thing he'd thought of this morning.

-------------------------------------

Anna made a face when she saw the latticework of bruises on his back, "That's not good," she didn't answer Roan's question of if she needed a bed, they could deal with that once these bruises were dealt with. "Sit down," she pointed at Roan's bed before opening her inventory to go through what she had and see if she had anything to help him heal.

Vera nodded, "We're going to need it, I can already feel the cold setting in."

Roan sat on the edge of his bed, not having much for seating in his home, "Landed directly on my back earlier.. on a couple of pebbles.."

"Well," Jack smiled as the fire sparked to life, beginning to warm up the room, "Come on upstairs." The loft was an attachment over the porch, so it wasn't as warm as the main part of the house. "I'll move the bed in here so it's warmer." Janus was quite excited that there was someone else in the house at night, prancing around Vera and wagging her tail, inviting her to get down on the floor and roughhouse.

"That doesn't look like a couple of 'pebbles'," Anna shook her head, "It looks like a couple of whacks from the doedicurus." She set down a mortar and pestle and started grinding up some herbs and berries, "Alright, this is going to feel cold, but its the best I can do right now." She brought the bowl of the mortar and pestle over to Roan, filled with a red-tinted paste, "Lean forward," her hands and the paste were cold, but the bruises started to ache less as she rubbed the mix in, and then wrapped Roan's torso in some cloth to bind the injuries. "There we go."

Vera did just that, making her way to Jack, "I think Janus is excited about company."

Roan gasped at the cold on his back, but sighed as the pain began to subside, "Hey, i got another one on my thigh, think you can use that on it?"

"I think she gets excited about everything," Jack chuckled as he laid the sleeping bags from the bed down a short distance from the fireplace for warmth. "Janus! Sit!" The big dog immediately sat down, wagging her tail excitedly. Jack knelt in front of the dog, "Shake. Other hand. High five." He'd already taught her a trick. "Good girl!" He went up to her treat box and gave her a treat, and she excitedly retreated into the bedroom to eat it.

"It's no couch, but," Jack gestured to the opened sleeping bags on the floor, "It's warm." He was already trying to figure out how to insulate the sleeping loft better so it would be warmer.

"Alright, roll up your pants leg," Anna started mixing more paste before she realized Roan probably couldn't roll up hide leggings that far.

Vera sat on the beds, "I'm sure you will figure out making a couch."

She patted beside her, inviting Jack to lay with her, "Lets cuddle."

Roan looked at the hide leggings, "I'm sure there's an easier way. It's pretty high, willing the pants up would just get in the way."

There was no way Jack would turn that offer down, the giant man pretty much floated across the room to the makeshift bed by the fire. "I'll warm you up," he promised her, putting an arm around her to pull them both closer together.

Anna sighed, "Alright, but no funny business, get those pants off." What 'funny business' was, she didn't know, but it seemed like a thing she should say when clothes started coming off.

Vera smiled, snuggling up to Jack, "This is nice. A storm, fire, and someone to cuddle with. I can get use to this."

Roan raised a brow as he lowered his leggings. He had the wraps that they all started with on, so he was covered. Around his thigh there was a deep purple bruise about an inch thick. It made it all the way across the front of his leg, "Hide doesn't snap as easily, but I found out the hard way thst its better to have more support in the harness than just your thighs."

Jack chuckled, rubbing Vera's back, "I hope so," because he hoped for this to happen more often. He also hoped he wouldn't do anything stupid overnight, up until this point his only companion in bed had been Janus or Lil' Chicken, the latter of which was now eyeing the two from her climbing frame in the rafters.

"Oh, that's bad," Anna winced, "Okay, I think I can fix this." She mixed more paste and dabbled it around and on the bruise. "You're sure this is just the harness?" It looked like he'd put his leg in the spino's mouth with a piece of wood to keep the teeth from penetrating.

Vera hummed, closing her eyes, "I could fall asleep.."

Roan. Winced as she dabbed the mixture onto the bruise, "Yea. Unfortunately I was there when it happened."

"It's been an exhausting day," Jack smiled and kissed Vera's forehead, "Goodnight, Vera." He reached over her for the flap of the sleeping bag to pull it over them, settling next to her with a protective arm around her. He liked the feeling of having her in his arms, of being the protector.

"Well, let's not do that again, huh?", Anna asked, smiling a bit as she wrapped bandages around the bruise to keep the paste from getting all over anything else. "Does that feel any better?", she asked.

Vera hummed a response as she easily fell asleep in his arms.

"Feeling better already," he answered, "Told you those birds and harnesses beat me good."

Janus eventually came out of the bedroom when she finished her treat to curl up next to the couple, and Lil' Chicken got cold and came down from the ceiling to curl up on Vera's stomach in the night. Jack, it turns out, snored like a rex sometimes.

"Well," Anna smiles patted Roan's leg, "If the paste works, you'll feel better by morning."

Roan chuckled, pulling his pants back on, "Then I hope it works. Its been aching all day."
