A Change of Heart

Mei would have spat out her drink if she had been drinking anything. "Wow, never thought a guy like you would have a girlfriend. Cheerleader?" She asked with a bit of sarcasm, though somewhere inside her heart was cracking into tinier pieces.

He scowled at her. "That was mean. I'm a pretty nice guy, so there's no reason I couldn't get a girlfriend. Besides, Julia and I aren't even serious," he said, playing with his Popsicle stick. He was pretty sure Julia was just using him as a beard, but it's not like he cared. He knew of girls that would want to be with him, so it wasn't like he was as undesirable as May seemed to think. "And no, she's not a cheerleader. She is an orchestra geek. She plays violin, and she's rather talented with her fingers from what I've heard," he chuckled, joking about her suspected sexuality.

Mei blushed. "In it for the love out of the lights, typical." She joked. "If it's so boring being with her, they why be around her at all?" She asked.

"It's not boring, per se, she's really nice and fun, it's just..." He trailed off, not sure what exactly to say. "And we don't do any of that stuff. I think she just wanted someone to show off to her parents," he said honestly.

Mei nodded, crossing her legs. "Still seems more like a mutual friendship than love. You can't force that kind of thing." She explained. "Plus, you would know when you're in love. You get all soft and gooey and you start acting or feeling kind of strange around one person." She explained to him.

"Well, yeah, I know what love is," he said, trying to save face in his now flustered state. He did think he'd know real love if he saw it, but he couldn't let himself look like even more of an idiot. "Julia just needs me right now, and if I have to support her by being her boyfriend then that's what I'll do. She's my friend."

Mei smiled. "Seems like she has a riveting life." She said, looking at him. Riveting? she had so much stuff to do, not to mention other complications....

Mei sighed. "I think love is incapable for me." She said in a low voice.
Mei didn't even bother to look up at him anymore, her mind wandering to her dark thoughts.

So that was heavy, he thought to himself with a frown. Izzy figured she'd be a great girl if she wasn't on the weird side. Sometimes she'd act almost normal, and then it was gone. Izzy figured that one need not be normal to be cool, however. "I'm sure you'll find someone."

He smiled in return, and messaged Matty that he and May would attend. A minute or so he received a text back.

Who the hell is May?

Izzy frowned. Uh, that Asian chick from Calc

Dude, her name is Mei. Asian, remember?

Izzy looked at her. "Oh."

Mei smiled. "Sort of. I am never very good at being social, but there is always a first for everything."

"Do you drink," he asked, "or smoke weed? Because you'll have fun then. Or if you like s'mores. Trust me, though, you don't have to be social-everybody is just having fun, and they'll include you without even knowing your name."

He leaned back in his booth. "We're just a fun loving bunch."

Mei smiled. "Alright then, but don't expect me to be smoking a joint with them." She said. Drugs and alcohol where strictly against her training policy.

"I'll smoke it for you then," he grinned. He checked the time. "School gets out about now. We can meet Matty at his place."
