Fantasy Ww: Iuncta Iuvant

Scrunching his nose at the sudden intrusion, Rick's feeling of indignation only grew with the newcomer's attitude and comments. Without making a move to take the handkerchief, he turned his gaze to the boy (Meredith), and narrowed his embarrassed gaze into an unimpressed glare.

"
Hey, champ, thanks fer the advice. Allow me ta give ya some in return. Don't jump into a conversation where you ain't involved, and don't give an opinion when you were never asked fer it." He uttered in a somewhat threatening voice. He wasn't scared of this pansy-looking chump. His ponytail and pale skin were in direct contrast to Rick's short hair and tanned farmer's skin, making him seem very effeminate to Rick.

Snorting, Rick lifted his gaze up slightly, looking down at the boy with long hair. "
... Wantin' te play the hero, ye pansy-waisted little brat." He mumbled, glancing around at the crowd and people viewing him, realizing who looked like the bad guy here.

Pandora had a hard time sitting still on the train- jumping between carts easily despite the overall movement of people, as well as the train itself. With every light spark of magic or blast of light, her bright green eyes would find the source and she'd make her way over. When she ducked her head in, the members of the cart would usually stop doing whatever they were doing, but she would continue watching until another magical affinity caught her interest.

Although it was slightly creepy, there was finally a cart at the end that extended their magical show to the pink-haired twelve year old. Although they offered her a seat, her giddiness would not allow her to sit down as she offered the cart to show them her magic. After looking amongst each other, laughing, they nodded and Pandora made sure to close the cabin door.

Taking her wand from her belt, she tried to call upon the magic that usually answered her, resulting in a sudden blast from the end of her wand. The patrons of the cabin were dazed by the sudden explosion from the tip of her wand, Pandora on the other hand only had her cape burned. The girl looked at the disaster and then at her wand, tightening her grip and widening her stance.

Before she could go about fixing it, she was shoved out of the cabin by a particularly burnt patron and flopped down on her butt in the hall. Pandora sighed, banging her head against the door frame a couple times before forcing herself up. After readjusting the clip that held her bangs back, she jumped from leg to leg.

What if she couldn't actually do magic- then she wouldn't be here for long! She had to make sure that she could do something when she got there! With this reserve in mind, she vowed to save her spells until she could actually show off at the Academy. Luckily for her, the wait to the academy wasn't very long and when the voice announce she could get off, she all but prance off the train.

All Pandora has with her was medium suitcase, a grey-green much like her stockings that dragged behind her. There was a man blocking their entrance in, a weird rooster atop his head as he gave detentions out left and right. Eventually the group was let in though, and Pandora eagerly followed the man's instructions, putting her suitcase to the side.

If she wanted to stay here, she had to be good!

It seemed her time in the line was extended due to some, quite literally, bloody miscreants. The girl tried rocking back and forth in her position, swirling her cape about her person, trying to wait to get in. After enough time, and an audible snap could be heard of her patience wearing thin as she drew her wand and marched over to the group. Immediately, she shoved at the bloodied man, trying to put some space between him and the girl already in a line.

"Can't you fight about this when we're all happily in a line!? We're waiting on you- you know!" she continued shoving, which might've looked funny for her small stature but then she pointed her wand at the other boy. "And you, get back to your own line. Geez, a small bloody nose and we gotta have a big conference!?!" Pandora was being very vocal with her opinion, because in truth she was very nervous.

Any minute now and they can turn to her and say that they had made a mistake in letting her be here- she wasn't gifted at all.

Grumbling to himself as he snorted, swallowing a mouthful of snot and blood, Rick sneered at the do-gooder who had leapt in before, before turning his gaze to the very vocal girl who'd called the both of them out. His sneer turning to more of a disappointed frown, his disappointment lying solely with himself, Rick turned on a heel and walked away from the confrontation, down towards the end of the line, hoping he'd get the chance to make amends with at least the poor girl he'd frightened. The goodie-two-shoes and the loud obnoxious girl could hold their breath for his apology, he thought with a chuckle as he tried wiping more of the blood from his face, walking away and towards the end of the line.

Swallowing hard, Shawnee's line of sight was blocked on the kid, and her throat didn't feel as tight as she shot her head in the other direction when she had the chance. Slamming her eyes tight, she heard rather than witnessed yet another new student come over, speaking up and putting order back in place. Still pale in the face, she dared to look back and the bleeding child was gone.

She breathed deeper, shaking her head. Flashes of the blood still glinted her mind's eyes leaving her weak kneed. What a good way to start the school year.

-------------

Felix folded his hands at the podium, nodding to his students, "And now, I hope you shall treat them with the greatest respects and take them under wing as others have done unto you. Welcome kindly, this years newest students."

At his words, a soft whisper was sent up Corbin's spine into his ear, asking him to release the children into the hall.

On the inside, the room was long and two tables stretched far with students packed onto the seats. On the left, the wall was decorated with banners of blue, depicting a Dove in flight over two thorny wands. The right was similar, however the banners were silver, with a raven passing over two swords. Both sides were decorated with trophies, weapons students had enchanted locked in cases, names of past graduates who had done marvelous things for both the magical and non worlds, photos, and even an occasional animal head or scale hide.

Smiling at the front of the hall was Felix, and floating in front of him, was a bowl of water, waiting to be approached by the students.

Corbin would snort faintly, his arms folded, nodding to the students.

"Enter. Now."

He would just stand, a sentinel at the door, stepping aside to let the new meat in. He would grin, waiting patiently, his shambling horde waiting out of sight of the students to take their luggage. After all, it never hurt to have a bit of showmanship in his job. Generally he had to wait until after the sort to make that effort though.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tim would move to Shawnee, putting his hand on her shoulder, moving his head to look her in the eye. Fear of blood. Common enough. Distraction.
Which would be when he heard Corbin tell them to enter. He would gently hold her back as the others went in, waiting until they were last, making sure she was alright.
"Nownow, if you think this is bad, you should hear about my great aunt. She hated the sight of the b-word, and she got bitten by a vampire. Made into one. Now imagine being unable to eat because you can't stand the sight of your food."
He was telling one of his tall tales, of course. As far as he was aware, he didn't have a great Aunt. Much less a vampire, if they even existed.
"Married a sasquatch, they live in a forest in New York state. She's friends with a couple of kosher butchers, goes in once a month."
Shawnee blinked, looking at Tim as he touched her. Her head was still a bit scattered, even as he spoke. She knew he was trying to help, but her head skipped to a few of the friendly faces of hired hands. It was rare her parents offered work to nonmages, or sheer humans, really. She swallowed harder, images of one of them lurking in her room in the dead of night to lock her into a similar fate as his aunt's.
"Uh......D-don't you think we, uh, should be going in?" Her words felt weak and she cursed herself silently for not being better at faking courage.
"I suppose so."
Tim leaned to Shawnee's ear and whispered a little bit of advice, a soft murmur that no one else could hear and leaned back with a grin. Ne would take her hand and squeeze it before walking past the giant black man into the hall, giving the man a grin as he walked past. Inside he looked at the banner and the bowl before the headmaster, a twinkle in his eyes before he closed his eyes, touching the hilt of his carving knife.
Looking a little more cleaned up, Rick carried on inside, past the rather imposing ogre in the hall, who seemed to be giving every single person who walked through a condescending look. Rick didn't think he liked the look of that guy...
Approaching the bowl, and apparently the headmaster, Rick glanced about, wondering exactly what they were supposed to be doing. Well, this was a school filled with magic and wonder, so maybe they weren't supposed to know or understand yet. Rick swallowed hard, hoping this wasn't some sort of test. He was hardly an aspiring mage, having used magic once through a mixture of sheer force of will and utter panic. Pulling at the neck of his shirt, suddenly feeling a little hot under the collar, he focused his attention on the bowl, blinking a few times as more students closed in closer, and it became a little more packed. Apparently not many people had actually approached the bowl yet.
"
.... So, what's tha big 'ol bowl fer?" He asked, his impatience getting the better of him, his gaze looking up to the headmaster, the biggest authority figure the Academy could muster.
Shawnee blinked, looking down at her hand before realizing she was the last one outside. She moved after him, disregarding his words because like all the ones that had been pressed into her before, they did nothing. Entering the hall she found herself breathless, drawn to the colours lighting on the walls. Someone asked a question, and she looked forward.
-------
Felix smiled at the outspoken student folding his arms behind his back.
"Since you show such outstanding interesting, " A few of the older students chuckled, knowing what was coming next, "Please, step forward and place your hands upon the rim of the bowl."
Rick shrugged, immediately placing all trust and faith he had in the headmaster. He seemed like a swell guy, with a winning smile. Besides, he wouldn't do something dangerous to a student on the very first day, in the very first event of the year, right?
.... Right?
Swallowing a lump in his throat and glancing about one more time at the gathering crowd, Rick pouted slightly, turned his gaze up at the headmaster, nodded in determination, and stepped forward, placing his hands on the rim of the bowl, feeling it's cool surface, and the sudden rise in exhilaration and thrill of the unknown well up in his stomach.
Felix took a deep breath, looking down in the water. It turned a violent shade of green before filtering through blurs of colours in the middle. His own eyes reflected the changes before he stepped back. Out of the once again green water, a key rose, presenting itself for Rick to take.
"It seems that you are to join the House of the Doves. Congratulations. "
The house applauded loudly, a few of the older ones coming up to greet and bring him to their table.
Rick saw the key rise, and as the headmaster said something about the House of Doves, and congratulated him, Rick glanced about. Weren't doves birds or something? Rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly as he reached for the key, Rick shrugged. Maybe he'd ask someone later if a dove really was a bird, or if he was wrong.
"
So if'n I'm in this Dove House, are there other houses? Do we go live there er somethin'?" He asked in curiosity before being welcomed and ushered away from the bowl by the older students. Clutching his key like it was a life-line, Rick glanced about frantically. They were other Doves? If it was a house of doves, wouldn't there be like, bird crap everywhere? A little panic welling up and replacing the excitement in his gut, Rick didn't entirely know what to do as he relinquished himself to just following the flow and allowing the older students to bring him to the table they were sitting at.
Kana out of nervousness had unravled her long hair before running her fingers through. Walking past Corbin she did not give him a glance or a shred of interest to do so. Weaving past him she joined the boy who had spoken out first. She follwed behind another student who was second in line to walk to the bowl. Looking over his shoulder she blinked with curiosity as she rebraided her hair again.
After the student passed she walked up and looked up toward the headmaster. Her hands clenching the strands of her hair.
"Hello"
"Good Evening, Miss. " He gestured to the bowl and offered a smile, "If you would be so kind as to touch it, please. "
When it had been done, the water turned a pale violet, and much the same as the other two students, the center had flickered as Felix stared into it transfixed. Though he wouldn't say, it was the ways of the headmasters past, to use scrying into the new students futures to see the many paths their lives could take, and to find the best group of people to help them grow to avoid the more gruesome ends.
With a soft smile, he stepped back. A bell came forth as the water cleared, it's soft chime audible only to Kana.
"A second home I hope you shall find the Ravens. " Much like the others, the table had cheered proudly for it's newest member, and a few came forward to guide them to their table, offering information on the house, the people, and things they could do to help with grades and practice.
After touching it she watched it curiously as it changed colors. When the bell had rung she looked around. When the headmaster began to talk once more she looked back at him. Kana wathched the bell rise from the pool of water then saw a few students who had the same house cdme and greeted her. Taking the key she smiled at him.
"Thank you."
Kana departed from where she stood as she followed her new house mates. One had asked her about the name of the house and if it sounded scary. She shook.her head no as she seated herself next to a tall fellow and a short one who was a few inches taller than her.
"My father wore raven feathers and his face paint symbolized a raven amongst all his other spirit animals."
She gave them a smile before turning the bell in her hand.
Shawnee watched students approach the bowl countless times, each colour changing. Some students got objects, some didn't, she wasn't quite sure what most of it was about but it apparently decided placement. She looked back at Tim, giving a half confident grin and a shrug. Another student tugged her arm, asking her to go forward next. Shuffling up she looked at the headmaster nervously. He smiled and gestured to the bowl. Complying, she watched the water blush pink, before she was presented with a stone.
"Welcome to the Dove's House."
She managed to get out a muted thank you before she was whisked away to a table. Not really listening to what they were telling her, she watched the rest of the students go through the sorting before the only one left, was Tim.
---------------
Felix motioned the last student forward, the same kind smile still on his face.
Tim would have smiled faintly through the ceremony, but of course, Shawnee would have been close enough to hear his teeth grinding. He was against segregation as a means of enhancing competition and with his own reasons. Forced sports, the fact he was basically repeating stung him. It almost outweighed the fact if he didn't like the place, to hell with it, he'd leave.
He would take a deep breath and stepped forward, looking at the headmaster, putting his hand firmly on the bowl, almost and completely by accident, honest, tipping it over.
Felix let out a soft laugh, the water's waves cresting out of the bowl forming the other half of the circle for a moment, before settling back down into it's holder. It stayed clear for a moment before it turned a deep scarlet, almost blood like. Felix's eyes flickered between shades, his eyebrows furrowing in frustration. Whispers went through the older students, and a few of the teachers shared glances from their posts along the walls. Issues, so many possibilities so little he could affect, all up to sheer chance, and so many horrific tales to be written on a whim.
For a long tense moment, longer than anyone elses, he stared at the water locked in a mental debate with himself. The water cleared slowly, and Felix cleared his throat. A feather rose from the water, offering itself to Tim. With a tired voice, he said calmly,
"May a house become a home for you with the Ravens."
Tim looked at the headmaster as civilizations rose and fell, time dragging out, a show made out of him. His foot started tapping of it's own accord before a feather lifted out of the bowl, and he got put in the house that Shawnee wasn't in. Strike one. He could deal with it, he was sure of himself. Enough time and he could do anything he really needed to. He would stick the silly feather behind his ear. Worst case he could use it to make fletching.
His hands would move to either side of the bowl, his eyes locking onto the weary gaze of the headmaster. He would stand for a few things on occasion, but this one he was going to push on already. He had seen the looks on the peripheral, he'd heard the whispering. He honestly didn't much care for houses to start with, but he wasn't going to push that, not yet.
"What took so long, Sir?"
His voice was soft, a quiet whisper meant for the headmaster alone, but he honestly didn't care. He just knew that something was wrong, and there was none of the venom he felt in his voice.
With a gentle smile that showed his age more than he truly looked, Felix glanced at the scrying bowl. He couldn't remember seeing a future like that, and yet it echoed so vividly in his head as it flashed before him. He set a hand on the bowl's shoulder, leveling his eyes to look at him.
"You have many great choices ahead of you, young sir, choices that will affect more than you know at the time you make them. I trust you shall choose well when the times come."
He straightened up, nodding. The bowl shifted itself, the water soaking into the wood before the bowl narrowed out, becoming long and thin, a cane. Grasping it, Felix tapped the floor once with it.
"Before our night's welcoming feast, I wish to cover a few simple rules we have at the Academy. These rules are in place to keep you alive during you're time with us, and breaking them will result in punishment, and possible expulsion from our school, so I advise you listen carefully. The Western Forest, as all past years, is off limits to students. You will be able to note this by the sentries guarding it, for our newer students. The classroom building between the dorms and the Freshman classroom building is still off-limits to all students as of last semester.
"Our faculty is to be adhered with respect. They are here to teach and guide you, you may not like all of them, but trust that what they do is in your best interest as students.
Please note, curfew to be in dorms has been moved back to 11:30 to allow more time for you late night study-ers. "
Through his speaking, his voice grew stronger once again, and with a flourish of his hands, doors opened on wall behind him, trays floating out in a dancing like fashion towards the tables choked full of food and drinks. As they were set down, tiny lights shot back out towards the doors, almost fast enough to miss if you blinked at the wrong moment.
Nikolas was still nervous, almost to the point of fear about being here. All of these strangers around him, new faces he didn't know... plus this was his first time in a real school. He had been home schooled by his parents up until they decided to send him away to the Academy. At the time, the black-haired boy had been excited but now he was here and his excitement was being crushed by social anxiety. It had always been just him and his parents growing up, sometimes he went to the markets, but he always liked to play on the beach or in the garden. If he woke up early enough, he would sometimes go out on the boat with his da. His hood was drawn up over his head as he watched the other students going up to the Headmaster and being sorted into the houses.
Now it was his turn to walk up there in front of everyone to find out which house he was to be in. Taking a deep breath, he pulled his hands into the almost too long sleeves of his hoodie and pulled the hood a little further forward. Getting his his feet, the short student padded up to the Headmaster and smiled nervously at him. He had seen the other students placing their hands on the edge of the bowl, so he pulled his sleeves up enough to reveal most of his hands and he grasped the sides of the bowl, not exactly sure what would happen.
Like the rest, Merideth shuffled in past the huge voodoo priest (or at least that's what he assumed Corvin to be) and into the main hall, like the rest he waited in line, shuffling nearvously, the students from both the Raven house and the Dove house eyeing him up, like a piece of meat, of course they were doing it to everyone else too, even if they didn't realize they were doing it. He's seen Harry potter, he knows what the deal is here, one table is the house with the dove, the other is the house with the raven. Once he was told their names were simply "House Dove" and "House Raven" he scoffed "Well, that's unimaginative" he mumbled.
Once it was his turn, he like all the others put his hand into the bowl, until finally it was announced he was to be in House Dove, the house cheered like for the others and he turned around, heading down to the table where he took a seat next to the boy who had the bleeding face earlier "I see you cleaned up, good... keep the handkerchief, next time you're all bloody, wipe yourself up instead of making yourself look like a b**ch in front of everyone" Oh that's right, he wasn't going to let him escape that little slip-up any time soon, at least, not until he had something humiliating of Merideth's own to use as a counterweight... not that he would ever let Rick know his name was actually "Merideth" hell, he even wrote "Rodney" instead on his application.
As the trays came in, his mouth began watering instantly, he silently licked his lips as the food approached, he was starving! come to think of it, he hadn't eaten anything since he set out to come here, and was it just him, or was his jetlag gone? he felt like he was in his normal timezone again... He looked to one of the other newcomers (any) "Hey, you know why the forest's off limits? or that building between the classrooms and the dorms?" he asked, hoping that someone would have read something in a newspaper or anything like that.
She remembered the boy from the train but never caught his name. She watched him take his feather and stopped to say something to the headmaster. One of the seniors behind her had also asked what the hold up was. Taking thd incident to not she turned around to see the boy who had helped her earlier. Smiling she waved as he did the same. Before the food was placed before them he handed her a black ribbon. "This ...well if you want to keep it on you would look better."
"Thank you."
Taking the black ribbon she had slid one end into the small slot before bringing it up to mat the other end. Lifting up her ankel she tied it around before double knotting it. She eyed it once more, her thumb rubbing against its side. "I got a band when I went up there." She looked up before setting her foot down as he lifted up his sleeve.
"That's pretty too. This food here looks good as well. I'll wait till the other kid comes to sit before eating. That way we'll all be eating as a full house."
He sighed having no care to wait for the one with the feather or any other. "Sure"
He had been chosen to live in House Raven, which was fine by Nikolas. He always had a soft spot for ravens, there was something about them. Moving back to his chair, he pulled his hands back into his sleeves nervously and sat down, listening to the Headmaster. Although as food was placed on the tables in front of him, his attention swapped to that. He was used to such simple meals, fish and vegetables, that most of this was new to him. His finger idly rubbed the black metal ring that had emerged from the bowl for him as he decided what he should try first.
Sitting at the Dove's table between two girls she didn't know, she glanced over towards Tim. She was worried. Sure, they didn't know each other well, but he was a sweetie. One of the girls bumped her arm, offering her one of the glasses of juice that had been set down near them. Accepting it politely, she joined into their conversations.
"So, what are dorms like here?"
The girl on her right answered cheerfully, a soft-more, as it seemed. "You have two dorm buildings per house, right? Freshman and soft more in one, juniors and seniors in another. You'll be pointed where you need to go to get to them after this, so I wouldn't worry, and your name is on the door of your room, so it's pretty hard to get mixed up there."
Shawnee nodded, asking a few odd questions here and there.
Down the table, one of the older students eyed Merideth, "Forest is off limits because the things that live in it can kill you. It's for finals week purposes only, though you'll learn that well enough. The lab building is well....let's just say some kids thought it'd be funny to have a duel in there, and quite a few support beams got hit in the crossfire, what between the spells and exploding potion cabinets.
Next thing you know, the fourth floor is now the third and ivy samples took root in the basement and claimed the other two floors. A few of the teachers say there's still a good bit of residual magic in there making it difficult to get it cleaned and repaired."
The kid next to older student grinned broadly, "Hey mate, I told them I was sorry."
The two broke back into jesting mannerisms, catching up from their summer apart.
