After Mason had left, football practice started soon after. Warm ups went by quickly, just a couple laps around the football field followed by stretches and various strength workouts. Not even ten minutes into practice though, Kanen walked off the field, heading over to the coaches. "I need to leave." He declared
"Practice just started." The coach argued,"Go get back out there with the rest of be guys."
"Well I need to go. I'll run extra tomorrow or something." Kanen said back, unbuttoning he straps on his helmet and loosening the laces on his cleats.
"You skip practice, you don't play. That's always been the rule, you know that."
"Give my starting spot to someone who cares then. I'm leaving. See you all tomorrow." With that, Kanen jogged off the field, heading right to he parking lot. His cleats sliced across the concrete as he jogged, his pads and helmet slung over his shoulder, bouncing on his back with each step.
His car was hot after sitting in he sun all day, but as soon as Kanen started driving, windows all rolled down, the temperature in the car dropped. The breeze blowing into the car was comfortable and cool. Summer time was definitely over. Fall was coming quickly, and soon it'd be cold enough that Kanen would have to start wearing a jacket.
It wasn't hard to spot a cripple hobbling alone down the road. What could be an hour of walking would only be a few minutes in the car. Kanen knew Mason would probably be stubborn about it, but Kanen was just offering a ride home. It's not like they needed to say anything o one another.
Pulling up to the boy on crutches, with the window already down, Kanen leaned over so he could see Mason out of his passenger window. "Get in... You're going to get bruises or some shit hobbling around all he time..."
