The curse of the Darksign plagues all humans. Those who are cursed with its terrible affliction are granted unending death, in that no matter how gruesome their death is, they will continuously manifest from the ashes of their corpses for all eternity. However, with each rebirth more and more of the victim's mind is lost until eventually they become unhallow and kill everyone on sight. No one knows why the curse of the Darksign happened, or how it is passed from person to person, but everyone knows that the origin of the curse lies at the center of the continent in the lost kingdom of Lordan, the ancient land of the First Gods.
Kingdom by Kingdom, the curse spread and slowly began to cause the collapse of society all across the land.
In a desperate attempt to stop the curse, nation after nation began sending it's most seasoned troops to Lordan to unravel the origins of the curse. Unfortunately, by sending their best forces to stop the curse, those nations were unprepared to handle large outbreaks of the Darksign and very few of them remain today.
The remaining nations are Catarina, Astora, Vinheim, Carim, the loose peoples of the Great Swamp, and lands of the East. Civilization barely holds itself together in these lands. Though, regardless of the nation they come from, those who obtain the curse are either quarantined into giant prisons, or make their way to Lordan in an attempt to break the curse.
Lordan itself is an extremely dangerous and wild land. Hoards of unhallowed roam its hills and valleys, while great beasts and demons haunt its ruins and crypts. Cursed ones also wander this land, some out of virtue, some for gain, and others for more sinister ends. The First Gods, not having been seen in over a thousand years, left their ancient capital of Anor Londo sealed away behind a series of fortresses and citadels designed to keep all life out. Thousands have tried to make it to the fabled golden capital of the First Gods, but only whispers and rumors ever emerge from Lordan.
Your character is cursed with the Darksign and has chosen self-exile to Lordan rather than spend the next thousand years locked away in a cell. After months of hard weather and dangerous travel, you have finally made it to the fields of Lordan. Unsure of where to go next or what nameless creature you may encounter, you decide to settle for the night and take refuge in a burned out grain silo.
