Fantasy The World of Od

Saruka shook her head a bit, "No, I wouldn't say that seventeen destroyed villages and towns is a non-existent threat. I'd just say that whether it's a Necromancer or not is the real question, there's going to be a battle either way." She watched as little Jeni looked up at her hands, and figured she knew why. "I have an idea, watch this..." She cupped her hands around her mouth, and blew as if she were blowing a bubble, but instead, a soft cloud flowed forth and formed into a small elephant that danced around Jeni. It even ran under her at one point, and the cloud was solid enough that she stayed on its back. "She really likes elephants, huh? Where did that come from?" She smiled at the kid, and looked back over her shoulder again, to see her new friend/rival walking off into the distance. She thought of an old Simean travel prayer, 'When we will see each other again, under a different sky, may the flowers bloom and the sun shine down on our next meeting.'

Richter smiled and watched Jeni giggle, the elephant following them, "I'm not entirely sure actually, she's only been to a zoo once when she was three or four, the elephant was the only animal that didn't scare her I guess." He nodded and followed her gaze behind them "so was that girl really your friend? She didn't look to happy to see you"

Lizzy left town, shifted into a ashy colored falcon then soared off into the sky, searching for the next town to explore. She thought it was called Broan.

Saruka's face changed a little, her smile faded, her eyes less bright. "No, not really, I just met her after you left. She is a wandering soul, reckless and wild. I was just trying to help her to contain an master that free spirit. Her Energies are probably not so different from mine, she could become a great warrior, if only she would control her rebellious spirit. I guess I saw a little bit of my old self in her, and I know that I have changed for the better since I have trained and mastered my arts, for I have trained and mastered myself in the process." She shrugged and waved one of her hands, as if the issue was none of her business. "She will be broken, one way or another, unless she controls herself. Only time will tell."

"It sounds like she does need some guidance, people or creatures all hold a power to do something great, they just have to know it" he put his hands in his pockets "maybe that's what all of us are finding in Broan, that one great thing" he nodded thinking about his own situation, something in Broan will happen that might make humans look as extraordinary as a Mage. "So where do you hale from? I haven't seen many people with tails"

Lizzy continued to soar over the forests and eventually would see the city, then she would land on the ground and shift back into a human girl. Resting a moment she would soon begin to venture in the direction of Broan, though wouldn't enter yet.

She smiled at the mention of where she came from, "I hail from the deep Simean forests of the Agulpa Valley, third in line to the throne of Kwong Zhu, Monkey King of the Gokong Dynasty!" She said all of this in a mockingly serious voice with a puffed out chest and silly expression on her face, then let all the air out at once, laughing, "Hahaha, I'm just a silly monkey girl taking Academy courses in Kingsdale, and now I'm on my way to Broan to help against the Necromancer threat." She was messing around now, while she was talking, she showed her acrobatic skills by walking on all fours, and now just her hands. "How about yourself?," she said, still upside-down, "where are you from, and what do you plan to do in Broan?" She straightened herself up as she said this, walking along beside him.

"I come from oaken, one of the few human civilizations left. My parents are sailors and who knows where they are now" he thought for a moment of them and continued. "I came to kingsdale to see if I could make a career off of inventing, but none of them have worked so I did odd jobs. Fixing airboats, carts, trains, you name it. That little tyke over there followed me" he smirked and glanced over, the cloud elephant now carrying a sleeping toddler "I thought maybe in Broan I could do just that, I don't think myself much of a fighter."

"So, you're a Mechnomancer? Or is it all done by hand?" She had seen a few Mechnos before, working their wizardry mixed with science, creating tiny metal men to help them with their inventing and even household chores, or flying mechanical birds to deliver messages and small packages across Od. "And do you think you'll be able to help in the battle? They have a lot of things to fix in Broan, I'm sure, but what good will that do if we have to go into a war?" She didn't say this criticisingly, merely out of curiosity.

After a moment of deep thought Ali decided to take the path heading towards the left. As she followed the path she would look up at the sky noticing it's color, the clouds, the birds. She wasn't very sure why but she felt safer in the forest. Because of this she walked the path while staying as close to the tree line as possible. She slowed to a halt. There was a sign next to a split in the path. Ali couldn't understand the writing on the sign and placed her hand upon the carved out letters as if it would give her answers. "Br...oan?", she barely whispered. Had she just spoke? Ali quickly put her other hand over her mouth in surprise. She had no clue what she had said or if she had even pronounced it correctly. She hoped she would find some answers to her questions soon. You know...once she learns how to ask them.

~On the border of Osterin Woods~

Rectra'an stalked the forest, making his way along with his new found charge, Azelik, the Clearblood. He himself had told Azelik to go on ahead to Broan, he would meet her there, but he must seal off the forest from danger as he went. As he lumbered along, he saw a girl, simply walking along the roads, coasting the edge of the woods. She seemed lost and perhaps confused, she kept looking about as if everything astounded her. "Barkless child, have you lost your path?" he creaked in a gentle voice, "Do you know where you are? Perhaps I can help you, little man-sprout?"

Ali turned towards the sound of someone speaking. She pulled her cloak tighter around her body covering herself more as if it would keep her safe if this person were a threat. Confusion was the look on her face as she realized a tree was the one talking to her. A tree? No, a man? Regardless of what he was he seemed friendly enough and that brought her some comfort. She tried to focus on what he was saying to her. "L...lost", she repeated back to him, fumbling over the word, trying to get a grasp on this whole talking thing. It was becoming difficult and she was getting a little frustrated. she looked up at the friendly stranger and hoped he would understand how confusing this was for her.

~Xerno, Forest Outside Broan - Westeshire, Status: Waiting~

Xerno took a deep breath as the sun was nearly setting. It was a beautiful sight, the sunset, the end of a day and the beginning of night. What a perfect symbol for balance. Light and darkness mixing together. Ah, he was rambling again... "It's almost time." He said as he reached for his pouch and pulled out a cookie. It was still warm and fresh. He started muching on it as he channeled magic to the ground beneath him and made it flow towards the surrounding trees, making them glow a soft blue. All in all it made for a magical sight.

Lizzy was roaming the outskirts of Broan's forest. The girl rambled things under her breath, out of boredom really. The sun seemed to be setting now, which made Lizzy wonder if she should stay in the forest or go into town that night. She would decide later perhaps, she was tired after her journey.

Andrea Genis, The Gold Bar, Broan City, Westershire.

She woke up feeling quite refreshed and willing to take on whatever challenge life would through at her now. She did find herself in a rather luxurious room. The bed had crimson sheets on them, off to one end was a polished oak dresser and a large vanity mirror beside it as well as a candle stick on it, opposite the bed were closed windows. No doubt it would give her a view of Broan city. She walked over to it and found out that the windows themselves rusted shut, she had pry it open with sword and felt the rush of fresh air replace the stale one in the room.

Andrea stepped out of the room and walked down the hall to the common area of the inn. The innkeeper had greeted her a good morning.

"Milady, good morning. Are you ready to listen to the details now?"

"Details?"

"Yes, what comes with owning this establishment."

"I own the place?"

A hearty and loud laugh was the only response she got from the innkeep.

"Remember, you bought it with that gold bar of yours the day prior. Don't tell me that you forgotten my name, it's Raytham and you, milady, are the proud owner of this establishment. Now what would you like to name this place?"

"Gold bar? What are you....oh my."

The full realization had dawned on her. Her face was shocked, then happy then shocked, then confused.

"The Gold Bar! Yes I can see it now! This establishment will be rich again, under you guidance milady. Now over there is the what we call the 'inn ledge.' You write down the agendas for the day and me and the lads will take care of it. You'll also net a steady income per day depending how successful The Gold Bar is. You can use that same ledger to order upgrades for the establishment in order make this place great again. Go on, have a look at the ledger. You'll unlock more upgrades, once we get the place up and running again. Go ahead why don't you set the order for us to bring in some additional lighting."

Raytham had pointed to a book on the counter, it was open but the pages were blank. Andrea wanted to leave but found that she couldn't, no, she was walking toward the large book. She places her hands on the empty pages and then knowledge had flowed into her.

She looked down to see the that the page had something written on it now. It was strange, she felt disconnected from the world for quite some time and now she returns this. The book was magic if anything else.

I have left the necessary funds for you all to purchase more candle sticks. We could use the additional lighting for our patrons. -Andrea Genis.

That was the line that was written on the book. She could feel herself regain control of her body now. Andrea looked around and saw that the common area was much much brighter than a few seconds ago. There was something not quite right with the establishment but she had little choice but accept it as it is. She hurried out the door, into Broan and headed out into the forest Mr. Validifer had disappeared to the day prior. She was about to learn magic and she would be damned if she couldn't maximize the opportunity. Still though, where in that forest would he be?

"No no, all with my hands and this" he pointed up to his head, his mind really was the most important tool, to do what he does successfully requires a lot of concentration. "I don't even use magic, as for fighting in the war, I guess I would if I had to." For the next part he lowered his voice not wanting Jeni to hear even though she's asleep. "But I can see myself being the first one dead if I did. People like you stand a better chance than I do"

~~Rectra'an, Osterin forest~~

The barkless sprout seemed lost, and he could not simply leave her here to wander. "I will take you to a man-forest," he creaked, "They will be able to care for you there, better than I can." He lowered his massive head, a swarm of tendril-like branches grew from it and wrapped gently around the child. The raised her above him and set her gently on his flat head, a few thin vines sprouting to give her something to hold onto. Rectra'an walked slowly on all four limbs, careful not to throw her to the ground, and began to make his way down the road to meet Azelik in the City of Broan.

~~Saruka, Road Outside of Broan~~

"Oh, I see. Well, if you happen to be sent to fight, I'll be right there along side you!" She smiled at him and the looked at the sleeping Jeni. "She would be very heart-broken if anything happened to you, I have to see you both safely through this. And I will! I promise!"

She continued to chat with Richter as they walked, the sleeping Jeni carried along on her new aethereal friend's back. She told tales of when she had been back in Agulpa Valley, stories that usually ended in her learning from a foolish decision she had made. "...and that's how I learned that the jaguars spots don't come off if you..." She stopped herself suddenly, looking up at the towering buildings of Broan that had somehow missed her attention until just now, "Whoa! That must be it, we're here, finally! Broan must be the most enormous city in all of Od!" She wandered a few steps, then leaned back on her tail to keep herself from falling backwards from looking almost directly upwards to see the tips of the buildings. They seemed to be scraping the clouds, they were so tall, and for once in her life, Saruka seemed to have nothing to say.

Richter stopped and looked up at the buildings himself, his mouth gaping. "I can see why they wanted everyone to come here" he adjusted the bags on his back and lowered his head again walking over to Jeni and picking her up putting her on his shoulders "alright well, let's go figure out what were dealing with now, I guess now we have to figure out were staying" he nodded and took a step over the border. The atmosphere had almost changed, the quiet forest right in front of the city seemed to have covered up the noisy hustle bustle of the city. Creatures of all races were there. All different, but none fighting, not even the species who were in a lifelong war. "This is probably the largest gathering of odians to date"

Kingston - Green Dragon Inn

Laika arrived back at the inn a few days later. She had run further away than she had thought. She opened the door, expecting Fenri to be standing there waiting for her. Knowing him he'd be worried sick by now. The inn however was somewhat empty. Lucy, the serving girl was sat at the bar reading a book.

"Laika? I thought you'd gone to Broan?" Her face was a picture of confusion.

"No, why would I?"

"Well after you stormed out Fenri and I thought you'd have gone to Broan to join that quest, so he packed up and went, and left me in charge of the inn."

Laika cursed loudly, somewhat insulted. She wasn't all that stubborn. Honestly. Laika sighed and collected some things that Fenri had forgot and set off for Broan.

Lizzy had walked into the town the morning after she arrived and had just been walking silently down the streets, peering curiously at signs, people, and buildings. Humans are so...Weird, and unfairly brilliant. She thought with a small huff, forcing memories of her own people and species out of her mind.

~Saruka, Broan City~

She looked along the streets of the great city, listening to the sounds of conversions, some in other languages she did not understand, the ringing of the smiths' anvils forging their metal, the shouting of street marketeers selling their wares. Many races and types of warriors, renegades and magicians had gathered here, some relating tales of past battles long ago, or practicing mystical arts, or arguing over whose champion would best whose. It was an experience like she had never known, even a great town like Kingsdale was small compared to this massive, bustling capitol.

"You're right, we should find out where to go from here, perhaps someone would know. Should we ask?" She didn't wait for a reply, and walked towards a beggar crouching on a street curb. "Excuse me, can you tell us where to.." She was cut off as he pointed a bony finger at a sign that had been plastered to a wall, it read, 'Any volunteers against the Southern Threat, register with a Royal Guardsman stationed at the nearest tavern, then report to the Grand Arena for evaluation and training.' She nodded, and threw several coins into the beggar's hat for his help. "We need to register first, and then meet at the colosseum across town," she told Richter, "so, if we get split up in this big city, how about I'll meet you there this afternoon? I need to get myself a room and a drink, and I'm sure you'll want to get Jeni to a quieter part of town." She looked around for the nearest inn, seeing a sign for "The Gold Bar -'now under new management'", said "I'll try this place out, but if I can't get a room there, I'll go look around and find you at the arena later, alright?" She waved as she walked towards the bar and went inside.

Ali was finding herself more comfortable in the company of this tree person. She didn't feel right about something though. She had to know what he was called by others. So here she is stressing her brain to find the words and even more so to say them. "Wh..who..?", No that wouldn't do, what if he didn't understand? She had to get this right. What is it called, something that other call you by? A name? This must be it. She laid her hand down on the wood, as if to let him know she was speaking about him, "N..name?" She really wished it was easier to communicate. Hopefully it will become less of a struggle.

~Rectra'an, Road to Broan~

He felt the child stirring, a green tendril growing a few inches away from her felt at her softly, heard her ask a question. "I am an Ancient, little sapling. Centuries ago, a great elven warrior named me in their tongue. Rectra'an I am, Watcher of the Woods." He continued to walk along the woodline, unphased by the looks he occasionally got from other travelers on the same road. "And how are you called," his branches groaned the question softly, "Do you remember anything of your past?"

Ali smiled brightly at her success. He had managed to understand her despite her small vocabulary. An Ancient. Well that definitely sounded better than a tree-man. She was excited to learn his name. Rectra'an, it was a nice name. She found it to be unique and special. Her smile faded however when he asked for her name. She didn't have a name that she knew of and because of this Ali looked down in disappointment. She could feel tears beginning to well in her eyes but before they could fall she noticed something. On her cloak sewn with gold string lay the word, 'Ali'. This would be her name she decided. She tried to pronounce it clearly for Rectra'an, "Ali." He had asked Ali about her past. She would have been happy to tell him stories of her past but she did not have any to share. There was no memory past when she woke up not too long ago this morning. She replied with a soft 'no'.

~Rectra'an~

So, she had no history, at least that she could remember. 'Was she suffering some type of amnesia?' he questioned himself. "Ali, your mind feels empty, as if there is a clearing in your thought-forest. May I examine it closer?" He waited a moment, but continued with his thoughts anyway, "I do not wish to frighten or harm you, however, this might be slightly uncomfortable if you struggle or close your mind."

He reached out his vines to her again, many, many vines this time. They caressed Ali tenderly, quietly tapping at her head, snaking around her body. Then, Rectra'an's mind entered hers, probing for the empty spaces. He found many unfilled thoughts, much more emptiness than not. He used his large and ancient consciousness to move thoughts into place, giving her basic knowledge of things she should know, many words of language, thoughts of the animals and trees, cities and people. Unfortunately, old and wise though he was, he could only give her the types of thoughts that he thought, giving her pieces of his speech, calling humans as 'barkless' or children 'man-sprouts', his love of the forest, viewing mankind as a distant species.

He slowly withdrew his mind, leaving most of the thoughts he had placed of his own. "Ali, your mind is beautiful, so pure, like a new sapling. I have given you several of my precious memories, that you may share in them, and that you may know what it is to know thoughts." The vines withdrew, leaving her simply sitting atop his head once again. "I pray you will forgive me my intrusion, I simply wished to know your mind, as you now know mine." He silently walked along, and waited to hear word from her, to see how these new thoughts had taken root, and if she wished him to remove them again, he would.
