How large an army, and is Suhiko in command?

To change the subject completely ( :P ), how do you feel about the mass combat system?

Mass combats will be fought more along the lines of Legend of the Five Rings, with player actions influencing the overall flow of the battle.

Suhiko is not in charge of the SL's army, though there is nothing in particular preventing you from taking the Command background for a small force of your own.

You didn't answer how large it is. And is the overall leader competent? If he is not, I predict Drama!

Most of these will have specific answers when the RP goes up, but it's a decent-sized force made up of several mercenary companies, each led by their captains, and his personal guard, led by his bodyguard. The captains have varying levels of competence from adequate to very competent, and the bodyguard is an icewalker and used to coordinating skirmishers, which is what the personal guard is comprised of, so she is very good at what she does.

If you want to be one of the mercenary captains, with a command rating, go for it.

If, say, the Perfect showed up with the more than just a token military force, or Gem turned out its coffers at the Mercenary Market, then the Scavenger Lord would be hideously outmatched. But he's got a large enough presence to discourage raiders and the curious.

Yeah I am setting my character up to be a manipulator--sort of a spy master or the chief adviser to one. I focused on Presence, Larceny (criminal/spy networks), Dodge and Stealth.

Mmm, if I buy Tiger Warrior Training Technique, can I have used it in any soldiers under my command prior to game start?

You can, so long as you don't mind them being in experience debt equal to the cost that the training would have incurred in play. I'm also going to say that to have tiger warriors, you need to have a command dot higher than you would for an equal number of normal soldiers.

Don't NPCs/extras not have experience meaning they can't be in experience debt?

I have to look up the charm again when I get home, but I was under the impression that Tiger Warrior Training Technique allowed your army to bolster their stats by going into xp debt rather than having to wait to increase them when they can. And NPCs can have xp; else they'd never keep pace with the PCs.

I find it unfair that I should pay extra since I already payed for the charm. Alternatively, I could just get the super elite soldiers without buying the charm.

You have to pay extra because you are getting training that takes several weeks or even months without having to devote that time in-game. It's a convenience cost for starting play with a quite powerful army.

Each trait dot and point of Drill costs, IIRC, a week, 10m, and 2wp. The extra bonus point represents the additional time and Essence in your background that was invested into training the Tiger Warriors as opposed to the time it would take to train regular soldiers.

Should you wait for the game to begin to Tiger Warrior Train, then there will be no additional cost aside from those outlined in the charm.

Here is the training keyword from Core:

Core said:
Training: This Charm trains other characters. Characters who receive training and aren’t extras must pay the normal experience cost for any trait increases. If they can’t afford this cost, they go into “experience point debt.” They must pay at least half of all awarded experience points, rounded down, toward this debt until repaid.
Emphasis mine.

The description of extras lists "Elite mercenary" as one of the roles extra's fill, and Followers are always extras.

Fair enough.

I'm going to say no Tiger Warriors at chargen. I feel it would be unfair to have a background that explicitly requires time and energy above and beyond what would be spent acquiring the normal background cost the same as the normal background, and you feel that it is unfair to have to pay extra for something you already spent a charmslot or BP on being able to do. I understand where you are coming from, but I feel as though my point still stands, so I'm just going to say that Tiger Warrior Training can only take place during actual gameplay.

I see BP, and consequently BG dots, as a sort of game abstraction of the time your character has invested in their backstory, whether in training an army, attuning to a manse, amassing wealth, training their essence, etc, and try to treat costs, especially background costs, accordingly.

So, how would my character get involved? She always needs money, but she's not much of a fighter without her mech, and joining a mercenary army might not be compatible with righteousness...

Well, I am a rich, deposed king who might be able to cover the cost.

Hey, I am too a rich king from Varangia! If you could just help me with a small initial investment, I'd be able to finally get the coffers of my family and share with you the enormous wealth!

Sorry, I am currently calculating if the humor inherent in devaluing currency in an entire direction would outweigh the negative repercussions.

Jokes apart, I choose a Motivation that keeps me away from scamming the other PCs.

@hellrazoromega our characters seem to have a lot of overlap BUT I was thinking that this is actually a good thing, it means that we can actually act together a lot rather than having to go solo like most of these character have to do.

We are Ocean's 2.

Or something. ^_^

Anyway, this is what my charmset may look like:

Shadow Over Water

Larceny II

> Flawlessly Impenetrable Disguise

Flawless Pickpocketing Tech

Easily Overlooked Presence

> Inv Statue Spirit

Insightful Buyer Technique

Flawless Brush Discipline

Sagacious Reading of Intent

Mastery of Small Manners

@ST: I'd need an Artifact that can host a heartstone but doesn't give me away as an Exalt. What could it be?
