Tales of the RDF - OOC

Ok, I couldn't wait. The initial post is up. @Dannigan, you have been at Brazilia Base for the past several weeks, waiting for your XO to get off his ass and assign you a squad. You have a feeling that he doesn't like you very much, but once you get your orders from on high, he can go suck it. Along with your orders are the personnel jackets for all the members of your team. You are surprised to see that you are not the only Zentraedi; you recognize the name and have run across Zaile in training, as the two of you are a part of a very select group of Zentraedi being trained up in the use of human mecha.

The next name on your list is a private Barbara Tolson, fresh from her training as a comm expert. She is not trained up in the operation of any Destroid, and is so green if she went walking through the woods, you'd never see her as she blends in. You will have to assign her to ride in one of the Tomahawks as she keeps the team linked up via radio.

Corporal Kevin Renner has completed Marine Commando school, and was hand-picked to go from there straight into Destroid training. His mecha of choice is the Spartan. He has also been trained as a field armorer to help keep the mecha combat worthy.

@Epiphany , @Beowulf, and @Sohisohi; the three of you have arrived at the base a few days ago, giving you some time to begin to acclimate to the climate. You have just received your orders to report to your new squad leader and are about to be deployed. Epiphany, your wife is not a member of your unit, but she is going to be traveling with you to Anton-17 to replace another medic that is being transferred out.

We may have another player jumping in, but as a field mechanic, not a Destroid operator. A friend of Dannigan and myself, his name is @killfire, and we have gamed with him in Real Life many years ago. He has asked to be a non-combatant mecha engineer, and so long as it's ok with everyone else, I can see him being tasked to ride shotgun in one of the Tomahawks and keep your weapons on-line in the field. He would then have the option to work as a gunner in that mecha, working the gun clusters and missiles while the pilot works the particle cannons and dodges.

@killfire! All right! 8D This just made my day! =)

Killfire, I'm playing Taniya (my first time ever role-playing a Zentraedi character from a player's perspective). It'll be great to have you, man! =)

@Sherwood Ah, if we are going to have two non-combatants in the group at all times, would it be possible down the road to maybe have two-seater versions of the other Destroids? I don't see this happening, but let's say a particular mission calls for a certain touch and we all decide to go non-Tomahawk? If we don't do this, then we will have to have a minimum of two Tomahawks in every line-up. What do you think?

Personally, Zaile's plan is to all Tomahawk all the time. As she's not a Destroid OCC, she's only got the one mecha she's skilled in and it wouldn't make a lot of sense for her to switch out of it. Plus, this player has always wanted to pilot one. :)

That said, if Sherwood wants to modify crew capacity, it's all good.

Hey Epiphany! Incoming! (See the IC thread.) =)

I love that our characters were trained in New Alburquerque back in what was the U.S.! They way Palladium describes that base makes it sound to me like one of the best places on Earth to get your mecha training (and on top of that, that side of the U.S. has some really good food!). =)

I see your post and raise you!

Given the Zentraedi Holocaust, most of that side of the US is pretty shot up (and by shot up, I mean uninhabited). But I suspect the local cuisine is still solid. For a pair of aliens used to nutrient paste, I'm sure it was memorable! ;)

I went with New Albuquerque for the Destroid training ground for the same reason that Fort Knox is the home of the tank training in the US Army; lots of room to maneuver in the wide open desert. With the weapons of the mecha having effective ranges in the double digit miles, you need lots of room to practice.

@killfire, you are a private that is fresh out of training. You've been sent to Brazilia Base to meet up with a squad to be their field support and weapons engineer. Feel free to start posting your arrival at Sgt. Taniya's office with the rest of the team.

Having a two seater Defender makes more sense to me than a two seater Tomahawk, actually. With the advanced radar that the Defender has, having a EWO onboard to operate it and coordinate a squad makes sense to me. Using my nigh unstoppable powers as Storyteller, IT SHALL COME TO PASS! There is now a two-seater variant of the Defender. Fear my powers!

I have just made a tweak to the Defender, giving it the following bonuses:

Enhanced sensors in this model of Destroid provide the following additional bonuses to the squadron:

+1 to initiative, +2 to strike, and +1 to parry and dodge for all members of the squadron within one mile (1.6km). This roll requires a roll on the Sensory Equipment skill at a -10% penalty due to the chaos of combat, unless the roll is made by the Electronic Warfare Operator, then it is at no penalty.

This gives you guys another reason to have a Defender in the squad.

Alright, I'll post my character in the character area and start posting in the main forum once I get back from work.

Character is pretty much done, just needs to be copy and pasted over (with a few minor tweaks)

Hooray! Thanks for joining us, Sohisohi! What does your name mean anyhow?

Looking forward to seeing your posts!

@killfire, when you are ready with The Kid (he will need a official name, BTW), please do the same.

Everyone, just make sure you post your character name with your IC posts. That way everyone can see who you are.

Also, I know that Epiphany wants to run with a Tomahawk starting out, and I seem to recall Beowulf saying he wanted a Defender. Just make sure everyone has on their sheets what mecha you want to have your MECT in and, in the case of any character that has more than one MECT, which one you wish to start with. Anton-17 does not have a supply of extra mecha to go to.

FYI, I'm going to post some house rules in a new tab, and repost some game mechanic stuff. Just to keep everyone on the same page with tweaks.

@Epiphany sez,

Sorry for the rank typo. I've fixed it in the original post at least. :) Also, sorry for taking liberties. I'll avoid doing so in the future, though it may make for far shorter reply posts!
Oh, no worries, friend! It was an easy mistake to make. Please catch me when my turn comes around to goof up (it will happen; I'm human after all!)! As for liberties, again no worries; how could you know my role-playing style so soon?

(To everyone here) Speaking of role-play styles, how do you like to role-play your characters? What gets you thinking and creating them? What influences and inspires you to play the character in this game?

Also, @Beowulf or @Sherwood What is Connor's rank, please? I can't find it. Also, Beowulf? I notice both of your characters in Sherwood's game (here and Army of Southern Cross) are named Connor McKinley. Do you just like the name that much or is there something else to that? =)

I'm just bad of thinking up names. Buras was my first ever character's name. And Connor McKinley was my first character in RPNation. Oh, and I've used Sven and Char a couple of times. That's about it.

Thanks for explaining, Beowulf! I couldn't figure it out.

By chance, do you know what rank your character is?

Same as almost everyone else, excluding your character, I would think. Low on the totem pole but not the total bottom.

But we don't know if you're a private or a corporal? Sohisohi's character is a corporal, Epiphany's character an E-1 (private). Hmm. This one's for Sherwood. =)

Yep. I didn't even know ranks played into it. I just chise my template, my destroids, and he said it was good. So, I shrugged my shoulders and said "He's the boss."

That is true; the storyteller is the boss. Seeing as you're new to the system, do you have any questions? I will help where I may.

Yeah. The rest of you have pretty, and rather filled out, character sheets. What? Why? Am I missing something? Perhals the most confusing thing is the damage system. Roll 4d8x10 I thought I saw in there. So I roll 4 d8s and then multiply it all by 10? So that would mean the highest damage for that role possible would be 320. So I would deal 320 damage if all went well to... What? Do I have to specifically target something? There are seperate parts to ours, like arms and cores and what not. Or is it generally assumed we're shooting at their cores? Basically go over the whole combat system. Otherwise I won't know what to role or how much to role.

What and why? Because you're a new player, I'm not, and all games require that folks know the rules (even tic-tac-toe). But more importantly, you're also a "gaming buddy" here in Sherwood's game and I intend to treat you like one - that means sharing! Sharing games with new players makes me happy. Plus, this is what we do here at RP Nation. =)

Shop Talk: Your math is correct. Successful strikes hit the main body of a target unless you specifically perform a called shot on another target (head, sensor, weapon, etc.). There is usually a negative to strike on smaller targets than one's main body, but if you miss the called shot (and the defender fails to defend on his roll), your strike still hits the main body. This all goes unless Sherwood states otherwise. =) This rule also (now) applies to missiles (as Sherwood has introduced a House Rule; normally, missiles strike only the main body of a target and therefore cannot be used for called shots).

Here's a basic rundown of how combat works from Sherwood.

I see in the IC-post that you're logging off. Have a good night, Beowulf! =)

Found this while perusing the Internet - commissioned Robotech Malcontent Uprising artwork from a very talented artist named Gregory Lane. I like the mecha, but I'm not able to identify that one on the left/foreground. What is that? =)

For rank, I was going with one Sergeant and the rest Corporals, except for the NPC of Tolson. She's just a private. Now, if there is a player that wants to be a lower rank due to either being demoted due to disciplinary problems or just being fresh from training, thats fine with me.

Now for that picture. I suspect that the drawing is a Stinger. What is a Stinger, I hear you ask? The Zentraedi did not have access to their normal equipment base, so they went with what they have on hand, including spare parts from damaged and destroyed mecha of other kinds. Picture a Female Power Armor with a Tomahawk's PBC replacing a arm and a gun cluster mounted in place of a chest grenade launcher, all designed to be operated by a Micronized pilot and you start to get the picture. Another term for it is Frankenmecha, taking parts from two broken up mecha to make one useable pile of junk.

Also, if anyone has a idea or request for a rule tweak, I am open to suggestions. The most important rule of my games is that I want everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves, and if you can come up with some ways to make the experience better for us all, I will happily look it over.
