Nate stopped to watch Alex as he moved. Watched his hands and body language. He was so much more comfortable in this building than any others. Was this what they needed? Find a wooden cabin instead? Build a farmhouse on their own? He had no idea how he would do that. Maybe he could ask Kaleb and Carlos? They seemed like handy and capable people. “Maybe we can find a wooden home too. I don’t really know how homes are built to be honest. I never had one like this. No building that was mine.”

“Certainly better than that horrible QZ rooms. I know you had more than we did, but it was still terrible. Four people in that one room was hard.” He opened cabinets and drawers. Lots of rags, a bottle of pills, and some alcohol. He moved to a bookshelf, distracted by the many titles. Someone was a reader once upon a time.

Alex had opened a couple cabinets and had found some rags, a few dusty bottles, and some sharps. He turned to Nate, looking at him. “We need a bigger house than this for all of us. It takes a lot to build a house. I had to help a couple times when new homes would come up in our section of the island.” He said, turning back to check a few drawers. Sharps, tape, busted scissors, and rags.

Kaleb could only imagine four people in one room. He had a larger bunk house with his group of five so there was more room. “I didn’t know that was how you lived. I guess I’m glad you followed me out here then.” He said quietly, looking at a drawer that was empty.

Nate was lost in the idea of house and forgot to check for supplies. He stood somewhere in the middle, imagining what it would be like to live somewhere like this. Somewhere bigger of course. Alex was right, this would be a tight fit for all of them to live. To stay a night, it was no problem. If they wanted to stay somewhere to really exist forever, they would need more space. “I am not surprised that you have even more skills than I previously knew. You will always amaze me.” He chuckled, because it was true. “But hey, what if we got a whole bunch of these little guys and smooshed them together. Or we found a cute little town like this far away from everyone else and make it our own? Build the fences for our livestock? Plant… plants. I don’t know how that works. A little house for us and a little house for them.” He turned his attention back to the front door. “I don’t know if I want to be around Carlos when he’s in a mood.” It was then that he shook his head, blinked a few times, and actually started searching. But only the table right beside him, because he was lost in thoughts again.

Carlos shrugged. “It wasn’t really that bad,” he amended. “I mean, we did sometimes have to take turns on who was going to sleep on the cot and who was getting booted to the couch? We only had the one bed, so it was usually the girls who got them. I had the couch. Salim had the cot. Most of the time. Sometimes, we were lucky enough to convince one of them off the bed so that we could have it.” He moved to the little bathroom. More pills. These people liked medication he was learning. Some tape. “You would think with how cuddly I am, they would be more willing to share. And sometimes we could get three of us on there. Sometimes. That was when I knew I had to go, you know. When I didn’t even argue about where to sleep anymore. When I was too busy dreaming about you in a chair to even care about where I slept.”

Alex had noticed Nate standing in the center of the room and looked over at him. "It was just something that we had to do. It was commonplace to help with new homes or whatever needed to be done when we weren't on patrol or in training sessions." He said with a shrug. He kept watching Nate for a minute as he listened to him. "It wouldn't really work trying to combine already built homes, they don't move well. But maybe finding a small town like this further away is a pretty good idea. And I'm with you on that, I'd rather let Kaleb deal with him on their own." He said as he turned away to continue searching. Rags, bottles, alcohol, sharps and even a few dusty cans of beans. Alex had searched the cabinets and turned to look at Nate who'd made it to the table. "You still thinking over there?" He asked with a chuckle.

Kaleb frowned at that. He had no idea that was how Carlos had lived. "That's horrible. Another reason to leave that QZ behind." He said, searching a few cabinets in the small kitchen area. Canned beans, rags, alcohol, and a couple bottles. Kaleb looked over at Carlos and sighed. He knew that the zone didn't have great living arrangements, but that was really bad in his mind. Though he was touched that Carlos had dreamed about him and didn't care where he slept. "Well, you made it out and you got me. So win-win?" He asked, walking towards him.

Cute little homes altogether in one little community. They could live as a family but also maybe a little separate. The farmhouse would do that too. Separate rooms for a little space. A little privacy? Did Carlos care about privacy? Overall, Nate really didn’t, though he was starting to see why someone might. Sometimes he missed having Alex all to himself. Sometimes he missed how it was when it was just the two of them. He already loved Kaleb and Carlos of course, but he also liked being two. He wished he could have both. He looked up a little surprised then smiled and laughed. “Uh yeah, sorry. I didn’t mean to space there. I was just…. Yeah, I was just thinking.” He looked at the table then shrugged. Gave it up. He was clearly not doing so hot on the searching for supplies thing.

Carlos nodded. “Many reasons to leave the QZ. I didn’t really know it was bad, though. I mean, it was, and when I look back on it, I’m not shocked we were all miserable.” He walked back to the main area. Good enough stuff from this one. Maybe there would be more in the next. He met Kaleb halfway and smiled. “Love, I could have gotten you while we were stuck in that horrible place, and I would still be a winner.” He ran a hand over his cheek before moving towards the door. “I have won the whole world, even if the world doesn’t know it.”

Alex thought about having a small community, and even though their farmhouse could do that similarly, having a home that was just theirs would be nice too. He loved his family, but sometimes being apart was needed too. His own thoughts were drawn when he heard Nate respond to his question. "It's okay, you can think all you want. I think we've gotten this one done. Next one?" He asked, walking over to him with a smile on his face, taking Nate's hand in his.

Kaleb blushed as he listened to Carlos. "It was much easier to get me outside of there though. Less rules and less people." He said with a chuckle, though he loved it when Carlos ran his hand over Kaleb's cheek. That was the sweetest thing he'd heard from Carlos. "I've got the world myself" He said, following the man towards the door.

Thank the world for Alex otherwise Nate would be lost not only because of his horrible direction sense but also because he would get stuck in whatever his thoughts were both good and bad. He smiled at their connected hands and pulled them out the front door. “Maybe I’ll actually be helpful in the next one. I’ll try not to get so lost. Thank you for being my guide always.” He kissed Alex’s cheek as they made their way to the next one.

Carlos bounded out the front door, holding it open for Kaleb, a bow and gesture outward as he stood there. A nod to old times and current times. He never really changed all that much. “If we stayed in that QZ, I would have won you. I know I could have. We would have had a star crossed lovers, secret tryst that would have been the scandal of them all.”

Alex smiled as Nate pulled them out of the front door. "Maybe. You just seem to get lost no matter what. That's why I'm here." He said. Alex couldn't help but smile wider at the kiss on his cheek. He walked to the next cabin, pushing the door open, and listened. Quiet. He stepped inside and noted it was similar to the one beside it. He looked around, before heading to check the kitchen cabinets first. Rags, alcohol, beans, scissors. They'd have all the medical supplies they'd ever need after this town. And a good amount of stuff to make different explosives too.

Kaleb watched as Carlos basically bounded out the door and held it open. There was that little bow and outward gesture that Kaleb had come to adore from him. Kaleb made his way out the door with a smile. "I'm sure you would have, but you're right. It would've been a huge scandal considering you'd be trying to make a partner out of the general's son." He said with a grin.

“It’s not like I don’t try, you know.” He walked into this next cabin and marveled at how well preserved it was. “I can’t help that my brain doesn’t think being aware of my surroundings and not getting lost it’s important.” This time, he made his way around the other side of the small cabin, looking for supplies. Whenever was here before left plenty of things for them to use. They would never struggle again, or at least that was how it felt. They would be practically bogged down with all their baggage now. More medication. He would toss that over to Carlos. Actually, there was a whole lot of pain medication. That could come in handy for sure. “It really is too bad that we can’t just live here forever. We would be set for life.”

Carlos, in his bow, timed it so that he was could quickly stand up and kiss Kaleb’s cheek as he passed before fall back into his bow for a moment, definitely not laugh, and then follow Kaleb towards the next cabin. “Can you imagine how it would have gone? I, the troublemaker, would be all but trying to court essentially the prince of the QZ. I would bring you gifts or leave them around for you to find. I would find reasons to talk to you and stay around. I would be around too early and too late.” He chuckled. “Honestly this sounds like how we were already. But! It would change! Midnight rendezvouses where I win your affection. A kiss on the hand or cheek when no one was looking. We could put all my sneaking to the test.”

Alex looked over at him as they moved apart to search. "I never said you didn't try." He said as he headed to the opposite side. He found several more rags, some alcohol. It was like this place was just abandoned long ago, and no one had visited it since. Alex looked back at Nate. "If it wasn't so close to the hunters in that city, I'd say we move here. Make this our dream." He said with a small laugh. They'd only been to two cabins and already they'd found a lot of stuff. Alex searched his side of the cabin and it was amazing how much he'd gotten. More than enough supplies for everything, and he'd even found stuff to make more arrows.

Kaleb blushed at the kiss as he passed Carlos, chuckling at him. His focus was on Carlos even though his eyes were watching in front of him. "The head trouble maker trying to court the prince. It sounds like our own version of a fairy tale. And you did, you found any way possible to talk to me. It was kind of endearing. I'm just glad my father never caught you. We'd have been quite the talk of the QZ at that point." He chuckled. That led his thoughts to think about his dad. General Price had been one of the bigger figures in the Denver QZ. He looked like an older version of Kaleb, but all military. Blonde hair cut short, his blue eyes a lot harsher and more judgmental that Kaleb could ever make his. His father always expected perfection and it only got worse as Kaleb got older. He had to wonder if his father cared that he'd left, cared that his only son was a deserter. Probably, but Kaleb didn't really care about what his father thought, not anymore. He had Carlos, and now Nate and Alex. That was all he needed.

Nate wondered if they should find additional bags for all their things, though that seemed highly impractical with the trouble they were bound to find before they got to their dream farmhouse. However, with a whole house, they could have so many things. He could have a collection of old world items again. He could take some of the bigger things. They could have a home full of real home things and not just the supplies to survive. They could live. These little cabins gave him hope. “Alex!” He moved quickly to the kitchen and pointed. “This is a cookbook.” He pulled it out and ran over to him. “Look.” He held it out like a gift.

Carlos ran past him and opened the next door. Well, actually, it was locked but old so he easily pushed it in. That was broken now. It was fine. He held the door open with another bow. “I might have thanked him for bringing the most amazing person in the world to life. He was instrumental in creating our fairytale romance.” It would have gone poorly, but he would have done it anyway. “You know, if you’d given me more time before running away so fast, I would have done more. It would have gotten far more elaborate. You would have loved me before we left.”

Alex had been looking through some drawers when he heard Nate. He looked up to see him moving quickly over to the kitchen. Alex followed him, and looked at the book that Nate pulled out. "So this a cookbook." Alex took it gingerly, flipping it open. He looked through it, before his eyes stopped. "Nate, we have to take this with us. It shows us how to make bread." Alex said excitedly. He moved so he could show Nate what he was looking at. It was a recipe for fresh bread, with everything laid out on what they'd need to make it and how to make it.

Kaleb laughed lightly at Carlos ran past and, well pushed open a locked door, breaking it. And there was that bow again. As he stepped inside, he cast a glance back over his shoulder. "If you met him, you'd probably have been killed for even thinking about me at all." Then his face fell a little. "I had to leave, I didn't want him to find out that not only was I not the greatest officer but I was falling for the biggest trouble maker in his zone." Kaleb said quietly, moving to start searching the kitchen.

Nate watched as Alex flipped through the pages. Bread. Oh yes, that was exactly what he wanted. If he could choose any food in the world, it would be bread. He but back his smile, poorly, and tried not to look like this was the most exciting find. “You’re going to grow wheat, and then we’re going to bake bread. Though, I don’t have an oven I can preheat to certain temperatures? Is that something we can replicate?” He brought his chin to Alex’s shoulder as he peered down at the recipe. This was going to be perfect for them!

Carlos thought about the consequences of his angry father who would never approve of anything Kaleb wanted. That used to make Carlos furious. How could someone not be proud of their son who wanted to treat people with care and kindness, who appreciated more than power and himself, and found love that made him happy? Why would anyone want their child to be miserable? “You know I would never have let him hurt you, right? When we were there. If I had known…” he let his voice trail away as he searched through the small living area. “I wouldn’t let him do that to you. I would have done whatever I could to keep you safe especially such volatile disappointment.” He was not sure what he would have done then when he was young and stupid, but he knew what he would do now. Anything. He would do anything.

Alex smiled himself, glancing at Nate who now had his chin on his shoulder. "We used fire to bake it on my island. The oven we used was made from stone, and while it was open, it worked perfectly. I'm sure I could make one for us." Alex said as he looked down at the book. "We will have fresh bread every day for breakfast, and with dinner at night." He mentioned, thinking about this beautiful farmhouse that they'd find.

Kaleb looked back over at Carlos, he knew that he was being honest. "I know that, but back then it was a lot harder to disobey or even consider deserting. It was safer for both of us for me to leave before things got worse." Kaleb said, turning back to searching the kitchen. "I know you could've handled him, would've protected me, but back then all I could think about was protecting you." He stated, pulling out drawers to find some tape, scissors and rags.

Nate snaked an arm around Alex’s back so that he could wrap both around him in a hug he felt was necessary. With so much talk of their future home, it was hard not to be so excited. “Of course you can make one. There is literally nothing you can’t do.” He closed his eyes as he gently squeezed his embrace. He loved the future and he loved bread and he loved Alex so much. “We’re going to have the most perfect home.”

Carlos paused and turned to look at Kaleb. Protect him? From what? His father? The other guards? He knew that was why Kaleb tried to get him to stay at the QZ. That was to protect him from everything Kaleb was afraid of on the outside. But the question always remained. How would that protect him when Kaleb leaving him would have hurt more than anything else that could happen there? He tried to pull himself back to reality as he checked rough drawers and cabinets. To the tiny bathroom. Back to the center. “I’m glad we left. You and me. I’m glad we protected each other by leaving together. I don’t think I could have survived without you.”

Alex felt the arm snaking around his back and smiled. He enjoyed the hug, it made him happy. He was excited to find their future home, and he was more than excited to share it with Nate, Carlos and Kaleb. He blushed at those words, although the smile on his face widened at the gentle squeeze. "We really are, all four of us enjoying the warm bread, ravioli we can learn to make and anything else." He said with a smile. This was a beautiful dream he couldn't wait to make a reality.

Kaleb caught Carlos looking at him. He looked away, pink on his cheeks as he checked the drawers near the bed. He knew his father, knew what the man would do if given half a chance or if he knew about Carlos at all. If Kaleb was gone, and no connection had been made between the two, it wouldn't matte. If they'd tried to form a relationship at all, his father would've found out and neither of them could've made it out alive. It had been for both of them that Kaleb had left. "You would have survived without me. That's what you are. A survivor" Kaleb said quietly.

Nate had never been so happy even with his mama and his brothers. He loved them like nothing else, and they all loved him and each other. It was the most beautiful life. And then there was nothing, and he just knew he would never have that again. He was right. He wouldn’t. He could never have that family again. What he had with Alex was so different in the best way. The only thing that could make this life better was if he could have them all. Alex, Carlos, and Kaleb as well as his mama, Max, and Ben. They would have been the best family. It was okay. All of his people could be happy for him even wherever they are. They told him so. Find the fireflies, Nate. Find our people. Okay, family. he found them. He found his people. He pulled away from the embrace, and took the book from him to pack into his pack. “Come on. Let’s see what else we can add to our dream.”

Carlos faced him with those quiet words. No. After all this time, Kaleb still didn’t understand. “My love, my heart, my world, that would only be surviving. That’s not living. There was no life before you. There would never be life without you.” He grabbed parts and pieces and bits and bobs without any thought to them and their uses. His thoughts were only of the beautiful blue eyed officer who took his breath away. Who was everything.

Alex let out a little sigh when he felt Nate pull away, and let him have the cookbook. His eyes slid over to look at him with a smile and nodded. "That sounds like a wonderful idea." Alex told him, pulling open a few more drawers before his face lit up. He reached in and pulled out a small bowl and its club. "Nate! Look what I found. This is a mortar and pestle." He turned towards the other, showing off the dark grey mortar bowl and the pestle sitting inside. "We can use this to grind the plants much better." He added.

Kaleb didn't notice Carlos looking at him. He did however hear his words. "I'm sure you would've figured out how to live without me." Kaleb muttered. It was hard for him to accepted sometimes that this was where he belonged. That he had the love he'd wanted two years ago, but sometimes that officer part of him just snuck back in. It would hang out for a bit before being scared away again by Carlos. Kaleb didn't like it when it showed up, but it was something that just happened. 25 years of that mindset doesn't always go away.

Nate moved back to the kitchen, pocketing some things here and there, but found nothing of additional import. He looked up at Alex’s excitement and immediately joined him. “Ah, so this is your fancy smashy bowl thing. For mashing plants and maybe beans if we want to change it up.” He touched the strange utensil. The pestle. Why was it called a mortar? Why was it not just a bowl? Was it meant for mashing? He nodded in approval. “We should show them when we’re done. We can tell Kaleb his plant poultice is going to be even better now.”

That was it. He wasn’t searching anymore. It was time to talk remind his Kaleb how things really were. He moved to him, no waiting or questions or anything else. He took his hand, turned his body to face Carlos’, and moved his head so that there was no looking anywhere else. “I couldn’t. That’s why I went with you.” He pressed a gentle kiss to his lips as a reminder of who he had always been. There was never anything before him. There would be nothing without. “I think, when we’re all officially married, I’ll take your name. Carlos Price. What do you think?”

Alex nodded. "Yep! It's a perfect way to grind and mash up things. But no, no beans are touching this." Alex said with a firm shake of his head. "The club here is designed to mash stuff. It's weird but it works." He added with a smile. His attention was drawn when Nate told him they could tell Kaleb and show off their find. "Okay, I think we've searched this house enough. Ready to move on?" He asked.

Kaleb had been absentmindedly searching drawers and stuffing whatever he found in his pack. He wasn't expecting Carlos to take his hand or move him. Kaleb found himself facing Carlos, no way to look anywhere else. He wanted to shake his head but he couldn't move. His eyes locked onto Carlos' and he sighed at the kiss to his lips. He still wondered just how they'd made it here, to this place, this path to a dream. Kaleb blinked for a moment before he smiled softly. "I like that a lot." He finally said, watching his partner intently. "Mr. Price, should we carry on then?" He asked, this house was searched thoroughly.

Nate laughed. “Okay no beans. Never beans. I think we should have a strict no bean policy in our farmhouse. What do you think?” He slid his hand into Alex’s as he took the mortar and pestle and put it into Alex’s pack. It made sense and was easier that way. “Come on, beautiful. Let’s see what else this amazing place has to offer.” He pulled him to the door. “How many more are there?”

There was nothing more that he could do to prove his love in that moment than to change who he was. He needed to show that he was no longer Carlos Da Silva the troublemaker who was infatuated with some guy and followed him out of QZ to his imminent death. He was Carlos who was defined by who Kaleb made him. “I do like the sound of Mr. Price,” he smiled. “Maybe that’s who I’ll be now. No waiting for a wedding. Who would stop me?” He kissed the top of Kaleb’s head then gently tugged him towards the door.

Alex chuckled at that and nodded. “No bean policy, I like that. Besides when we have our fresh crops, we won’t need beans anyway.” Alex agreed as Nate took his hand and put the mortar and pestle in Alex’s pack. “I’m right beside you love.” He said with a laugh. He thought about it for a moment at the question. “I think there’s two more before we hit halfway.” Alex told him as Nate pulled him to the door. As they exited, he looked down the street. Two more on each side and then a larger house further up in the center of town.

Kaleb laughed at that. “Get married in this quaint little town with our people? Sounds like a dream Mr. Price.” He said as he followed the gentle tug to the door. As they came to the street, Kaleb looked around. “Looks like we’ve got two houses before we can meet up with the other two.” He said as they headed to the next house.

Nate swung their arms as they left the cabin and moved towards the next one. “Maybe we should have Carlos make us a sign. ‘Strict no bean policy’ sign that we hang up somewhere like some of the signs people hang up in their houses? Like that one back there.” He gestured over their shoulders. “In the kitchen it said something about how they dance in there? And Ive read more like that. We can have our own as a reminder that we are leaving that behind.” He brought Alex’s hand up to his lips as though that was as natural as walking. He stepped to the next cabin and opened the door.

Carlos had thought about this a lot. He always wanted to be with Kaleb since the day he met him. That was his identity. He thought about marriage a lot before he asked. He thought about the name change equally as much. “If you keep calling me that, I don’t think I’ll ever be Da Silva again. Changing my name right now while we walk. No wedding necessary.” He laughed they walked to their next cabin as well. “Impatiently waiting for a ceremony and impatiently making the decision that names can be whatever we want as well.” As was customary, he opened the door with his bow for him.

Alex chuckled as they moved to the next one. “That sounds like a great idea. Remind us never to have beans again. If we find some spare wood and paint. I’m sure he’d love to do that.” Alex said. He smiled at the kiss on the back of his hand. He loved that, a lot. It was one of his favorite things that Nate did. He stepped up into the cabin, looking around and made it over to the bed. “Maybe that larger house will have separate rooms. After we play truth or dare we can shove those two in their own room.” Alex laughed.

Kaleb looked at him with a smile. “Maybe I don’t want you to be a Da Silva anymore.” He said. “Kaleb and Carlos Price. The prince and the trouble maker. Had quite the ring to it doesn’t it?” He asked as they walked to the next cabin. He smiled at the bow as Carlos opened the door. He loved this man so much, and he couldn’t wait for them to marry.

Nate moved into the next cabin but paused. “Our own room? I would love to have our own room.” He squeezed the hand he still held. “I miss just being us. A little bit. I mean, I love them, but I love you more. I mean, yeah, wait is this even making sense right now? I feel like I’m getting all discombobulated again.” He shut his mouth, red flushing across his cheeks. He separated from Alex to start checking this cabin. He was trying to focus, but he was so scrambled that it was probably going poorly.

Carlos reached forward, placed both hands beneath Kaleb’s arms, picked him up, and swept him across the threshold of the next cabin. “I think there’s nothing better than that, my prince.” Then it was so. He hadn’t really been a Da Silva in a long time. He didn’t even know who they were. But he knew who he was. He twirled around his love before moving away to begin his search.
