Alex chuckled seeing the shake of his head. "If we're being actively attacked, I'll just tuck you closer and run." He said with a smile. "Maybe I'll take you up into a tree and save you that way." He added as he walked on. His attention was straight ahead for a few moments before he heard Nate speak again. "What I meant was, I did not realize what I'd had before this point in time. I plan on being happily taken until we're both gone." Alex told him with a happy smile, leaning his head down and kissed Nate's forehead before he looked straight ahead again.

Kaleb shook his head with a laugh. "I tried, I really did try but it was very tough." He said, remembering how dead set he was against having any kind of relationship with Carlos. Now, two years later, they'd found a family and they were headed towards a home, a home for all of them. One where he could marry the man he loved so much and finally enjoy peace.​

The imagine of Alex barreling through the trees he felt must have looking similar to how Carlos looked carrying Alex when they had to run out of that building at the beginning. That might have been an amusing scene had he not been afraid for their lives. The mental imagine of Alex jumping through the trees with Nate holding onto him was such a strange and amazing vision that he did not know how to handle. As Alex looked down at him, explaining this love that was going to last forever, Nate lost himself in the moment. He did that so often now. “Did you know that you’re my favorite person in the whole world?”

“Because I’m delectable,” Carlos repeated with an insistence. He took Kaleb’s hand and brought it to his lips. “And I always wanted you to make sure you remembered that. “ he nodded towards the two in front. “Just wait. We’re going to watch the unfolding of what we have unlocked in them. This is why I love sheltered people. So much untapped potential.”

Alex looked down at Nate, that same warm smile on his face. “Am I? Well, you are my favorite person in the world as well.” Alex told him. He loved everything about this moment. And he looked up to see the tree line was ending a few hundred yards ahead. “As much as I’d love to keep carrying you, I do have a tree to climb to see what’s up ahead.” Alex told him, nodding ahead to show the edge of trees. Montana did not have the expansive forests of North Dakota, most of it was barren and open.

Kaleb felt his cheeks flush pink. “Yes, you are.” He finally agreed before he smiled at the kiss to his hand. “It’s something I will never forget.” He added before his eyes looked ahead of them. “It’s like a real life fairy tale. Watching them.” Kaleb admitted.​

Nate nodded into his nestle. Did Alex really not know that? Was he unaware of just how much he was to Nate? Favorite person in the whole world and that was before he realized that he was also in love with him. Granted, he now only knew a whole three other people since everyone else was dead or, disbanded and absorbed somewhere, or trying to kill then. Despite this, he knew that Alex would always be his favorite person. “Okay, but first.” He reached up his hand to bring Alex’s head down as he lifted himself up enough to kiss him. A breathless kiss. When he pulled away, he smiled wide and said, “Your toll.”

Carlos eyed the fairy tale and chuckled. “Hey now, you’ll pay him the toll and not me?”

Nate, looking only into the eyes of Alex, answered, “Nope.”

Carlos dramatically sighed. “Now that’s just not fair.”he looked to Kaleb. “How can I win everyone over but him? What is this? Have I lost my charm, love?”

Alex felt a swell in his heart at the nod. He had never been someone’s favorite person before, not this way. He had friends, he had his people, his family but Nate meant more to him than the others. There was just something about him that drew Alex in. Alex felt a hand being his head down as Nate lifted just enough to kiss him. It was one that stole Alex’s breath, and he was trying to catch it when Nate pulled away. Alex knew he had a goofy smile on his face as he looked at Nate. “I might have to carry you around all the time just for the toll.” Alex finally spoke. His head turned to look at Carlos with a wide smile. “Like Nate said, there are something’s only for him, and that would include toll kisses.” Alex said before he gently set Nate down, arm on his back until he was steady.

Kaleb laughed at the scene before them. He turned and smiled “Some people can only really love one person. So no, you haven’t lost your charm.” He said with a smile.​

Nate settled onto the ground again, sad that he was going to have to be his own person once more, but decided that the only appropriate answer was to take Alex’s hand so that they could continue to be one. It was nice to see Alex struggle for breath as well and not just have it be him. It was an amazing feeling to be able to do that to someone. “You are welcome to carry me any time you like, Monkey Man.” He squeezed Nate’s hand as he gently swung it in preparation of moving. He looked back at Carlos and all he did was wink before laughing and facing forward once more.

Carlos could not help but smile at the beautiful love they were watching unfold. It was everything his romantic heart could ever desire to see. To Kaleb’s words, he could not help but spread his lovable grin, give up doing anything real, and gather Kaleb into his arms for one very intense hug “You mean like how I love you, my soul and heart?” Of course, they were supposed to be moving forward, so it was a short and intense hug.

Once Alex had made sure Nate was good on his own, he had slipped his arm off the other man's back. He did take Nate's hand though, and he would hold it until they got to the last tree. Alex let out a happy sigh at those words. "Better be careful, you might never walk on your own again, Medicine Man." Alex said with a laugh as they started walking again. He had never experienced such joy in his life as he had the last few weeks? He'd lost track as to how long it had been since he first met Nate.

Kaleb loved seeing these two together and he'd do whatever he had to in order to allow their love to continue. These two deserved each other, their farmhouse and Kaleb was determined to make sure it happened. He turned to look at Carlos when he was wrapped up in a very intense albeit short hug. Kaleb smiled and nodded. "Exactly like that my love" He said in agreement.​

Nate almost giggled. Almost. If he was going to start the giggling again, they were certain to get caught somewhere in the barren openness in front of them. He needed to get that together. “Oh no,” he whined in the flattest tone he could manage. “That sounds terrible. I will never ever be able to make it if I am carried for the rest of my life. Pampered and cared for always. It sounds horrible.” He did not giggle. He would not giggle. He would smile like an idiot, and he would probably look giddy, but he would not giggle. Under control by the end of the tree line right there. Under control.

Carlos kissed Kaleb’s forehead, whispered, “I’ll forgive him then,” pulled away, and swooped a hand down to Kaleb’s before jogging quickly to catch up since he was the reason they fell behind a little. Kaleb was right, though. Looking at the two younger men in front of them was like a fairy tale. That was the kind of story to keep going. It may have been that he saw himself and his love in them, or it may have been that he was older and wiser now and felt protective of them, but he knew no matter what, he would work to keep them safe. That dream of theirs was everything he wished that he had. They never dreamed like they. They were too busy traveling and surviving. Now it was time to settle down. Retire. Make a dream come true.

Alex rolled his eyes playfully as he heard that whine from Nate. He looked at him and shook his head. "You are absolutely ridiculous, did you know that?" He asked with a smile on his own face. He loved seeing that face that looked so giddy. It was everything Alex could ever want. "I'll see you in a few minutes." HE told Nate as they reached the tree line. He pulled his hand from Nate's, placed both of them on his cheeks and kissed him on the forehead. He needed his breath after all to climb. Alex pulled away, smiled once more before he moved to the tree, reaching for the first branch and hauled himself up. He then reached for the next one, climbing and moving till he got to the top. He looked at the expanse of land in front of them. Off in the distance looked to be a smaller town, one that seemed like it had been abandoned before the world had ended. They may find supplies there, and it was on their way. Alex made his way down gracefully, landing on the forest floor and walked over to them. "Straight ahead in the direction we're heading looks like an old town, I mean old as in before the world went down. We could probably find some supplies there, and it would be a good rest spot as well. By the time we make it, it'll be close to night anyway." Alex said.

Kaleb smiled at the whisper and the kiss. "Okay" He whispered back, before laughing when Carlos grabbed his hand and they jogged to catch up. Eventually they made it to the tree line and waited for Alex to scout ahead. He watched the man climb and then listened as he heard about the upcoming town. One that abandoned might be not worth any groups time so it shouldn't be too bad.​

Nate watched him go, one hand across his chest and the other hanging limply as his entire brain functions were focused only on watching him move. His gaze stayed upwards even after he could not longer really see him. His beautiful Monkey Man. He waited patiently for his return. From behind, Carlos watched Nate as he stared at the trees. Lost in a dream. That was why he never got toll kisses. That was why he never got truly flirty banter. That was why nothing he ever did even phased Nate. That man only had eyes for Alex. Sometimes, as he watched Nate specifically, Carlos wondered if he was doing love all wrong. Should he have been less interested in flirting with everyone and kept it all for Kaleb? Should he have quelled that passion he felt for all people? Would he still be him? It was an interesting thought he might explore later. Maybe.

Upon Alex’s return, Nate was the first to be by his side. “Old and abandoned sounds like exactly the kind of place we want to be. No hunters, hopefully no infected. Just places for us to find interesting things and a place to rest.” He gestured forward. “I’m ready when you are.”

Alex, upon Nate coming to his side, instantly took his hand. Wanting to be one unit again. He may have enjoyed the attention from Carlos early on, and even wondered if it was because he'd never had that before. But Alex in his heart, only had room for Nate. He was all Alex ever wanted, all he ever needed in his life when it came to love. He needed his people, his family, but he needed Nate just a little more. "Hopefully." Alex agreed, looking at the other two before he turned, and continued on, leaving the forest behind and entering the barren landscape. A warm breeze blew over them and the town was a tiny speck on the horizon. That was their destination and that was just one town more, one more pause in their journey to finding that dream. Find that farmhouse. Settle down, enjoy each other, enjoy being a family. "I've got a wonderful idea if we find a safe spot to rest tonight. We should try truth or dare again." Alex said, now that they were all more comfortable with each other and with their partners. Kaleb followed Alex as they walked. "Now that's a good idea." Kaleb agreed with a smile on his face.​

They walked along out of the trees and into the nothing of the hot air and empty land. It was so far Nate’s least favorite place that they had been. It was similar to some places he’d been throughout his travels with him mom, but it was really quite terrible. He liked the luscious fields and mountains way better. Hopefully they could find cities and towns near those soon.

“Yeeeesssss!” Carlos’ favorite game was truth or dare after all. “All of the secrets revealed!”

Nate snorted out a laugh. “Do we have anymore secrets? Everyone is in love with someone and used to be something else. We already know all of those.”

Carlos clapped a hand on Alex’s and Nate’s shoulders. “You never know what juicy secrets can come up until a healthy game of truth or dare.” He eyed Nate. “Or what dares you can get people to do.”

Alex was glad that at least three of them had agreed. "Come on Nate, won't it be fun trying to make them do stuff?" Alex asked, nudging Nate playfully with his shoulder. He was totally on Carlos' side with this, just like when the game had been brought up the first time. It would hopefully go much smoother than the first time they'd played it. Alex felt the clap of a hand on his shoulder and looked at Carlos. "See, he gets it!" Alex said with a grin. Kaleb just shook his head with a smile at the other three.​

Nate laughed as he shook his head. It was not that he didn’t want to play. He loved games and fun and general being together with people. There really wasn’t a problem other than he was mildly afraid that he would do something stupid because he would get jealous again. Or believe in some old mentality that no longer applied. He was afraid of himself. But as he looked at his people, he knew that even in his worst, they could handle him. Finally he nodded, and as Carlos began to cheer, he cut him off with a fake stern look and a point. “I’m not kissing you.” Carlos let his arm fall over Alex’s shoulder so he could pull him close conspiratorially. “We’ll see,” he answered with a mischievous smile. “Let’s go party people!” He turned to grab Kaleb’s hand as he also grabbed Alex’s knowing Nate already was attached to Alex as well and pulled them along like he was trudging through water.

Alex was enjoying this, it was a wonderful feeling to him. Even on his island with his family and his friends he never quite felt like he belonged. Here though? With Nate and now Carlos and Kaleb, it was like he found where he should've been all along. Like this was what he'd been missing in life. So when Nate agreed to play truth or dare, he was thrilled. Alex chuckled hearing Nate tell Carlos that he wouldn't kiss him, and the arm around his shoulder had Alex turn to face Carlos when he pulled him close. "It'll be the first dare" He told Carlos with his own mischievous smile. He was excited to make it to the town now. He felt Carlos take his other hand and nodded. "Here we go!" He said excitedly as they headed towards the old town.​

Nate rolled his eyes but he was equally as entertained and excited as they rest of them. Okay, maybe not as much as Alex and Carlos. He was excited enough for the game. Maybe he would try dares this time instead of truths since that worked so poorly for them the first time. Though, truths worked out well in the truth or truth game. That was fully of only good things to learn about each other. They really did learn who Carlos and Kaleb were during that game. He squeezed Alex’s hand as they walked to this abandoned town, hoping that what they would find was small abundance of readily available supplies and a nice hotel or house that had not succumbed to the infection for them to stay in. So far, the old town really did look like an old town less than an infected town. That was a pleasant surprise.

Alex squeezed Nate’s hand back as they moved. The sun was hot, but it was getting low in the sky as the town appeared in front of them. Alex looked at the old buildings. They looked older than even normal buildings. Spread out a little from each other. It was quiet, and Alex didn’t see many places aside from being in buildings for anyone or anything to hide. He looked around before he walked to the first building, most of them looked to be made of wood. It actually made Alex feel like he was home. His own home had been made from logs as well. “We can check out a couple of these buildings and then find one to rest in.” Alex commented.​

As they reached this small town, Nate felt far more relaxed than in any other bigger city. He came through a couple of these with his mama when he was younger. They were always nice and quiet. They could not often stay in them, because they were often in such horrible disrepair, but there were only ever supplies. They never found any infected or anything. Places that were abandoned before the outbreak stayed abandoned. “I have a good feeling about this place,” Nate told them, though mostly Alex. “We used to travel through these sometimes. Lots of supplies sometimes. No dangers.”

Alex nodded. He was glad to hear that. “Good. Should we split off in pairs? We can search these buildings and perhaps there will be a place further in to rest.” He mentioned, looking at the other three. “We can each take one side of the street too.” He added, looking around. Kaleb nodded. “That would be a smart idea, and we aren’t that far apart. It’s similar to searching the rooms in those buildings, except these are houses not small rooms.” Kaleb said.​

Nate agreed. They could cover a lot more ground a lot quicker if they split into two groups. He was not leaving Alex’s side, and he doubted Carlos was going to leave Kaleb. He was right, because the moment Alex suggested it, Carlos was already throwing an arm around Kaleb from behind. Once upon a time, before everything else happened, would Carlos have tried to take Alex with him? Would Nate have let him? He wasn’t sure. Carlos leaned his head over Kaleb’s shoulder. “You and me, babe. Like old times.” Old times meaning also last week. Nate, still holding Alex’s hand, squeezed it with a nod. As long as he could stay with Alex, he was fine with the plan.

Alex looked over at Nate and nodded. “We’ll take the left side here, meet up near the middle of the town?” He asked as he looked at the other two. Kaleb nodded as he looked over at Carlos who’d leaned his head over Kaleb’s shoulder. “We’ll meet you in the middle. Like old times babe. We’ve got the right side.” Kaleb nodded. ​

Carlos slid his hand across Kaleb’s shoulder and down his arm. As soon as his hand found Kaleb’s, he was practically running to the right side. No one could quell his excitement about anything. It was just who he was. Nate laughed at the other two, mostly Carlos, and turned to their left side. This might have been a cute little town if they were here before it was abandoned the first time. There were not that many buildings, and he was sure that they should be able to find something nice. Maybe they could even take a little more time to sift through everything instead of rushing and missing everything out of fear of death. The first little cabin on the left side was small enough to fit in some of the lobbies of city buildings. That was crazy to think about. This could be someone’s whole house and the people in the city would never understand that. It was like an entirely different world out here.

Alex watched as Carlos took Kaleb’s hand and ran to the right side. Alex liked this little town, it was quiet. “I like this place.” He commented as they headed to the first cabin. It was small and beautiful. He pushed open the door and looked around. It was a one room cabin and it had no infected. “This is cute.” Alex said, looking around.

Kaleb followed Carlos as he took his hand and basically ran to the right side. The first cabin was bigger than the one on the left. He pushed the door open and stepped inside, looking around but he didn’t hear anything. “Well this is nice.” He said, looking at the cabin.​

Nate walked inside, marveling at how well it was still intact. It was almost shocking really that it could have lasted this long without falling apart. Maybe that was why they built these building out of wood. “Maybe we can find a farmhouse like this?” He suggested. If Alex like this kind of style, he would be more than willing to live in something like this. Maybe not here. It was too close to the city of murderous hunters for his liking. They could be here too quickly. However, there were places like this out there. Somewhere.

Carlos followed in after Kaleb and looked around. “It is nice.” This was far nicer than those corporate buildings that were always falling apart. “I think it’s cozy.” He moved around one wall to begin his search.

Alex looked around. Wood was a great building material, it lasted much longer. “Maybe. Wood is a great material. My home was made of wood.” Alex commented, running his hand along the wall as he made his way to search the cabinets. It felt like he was home and if they weren’t so close to the city of hunters, he’d suggest they move here.

Kaleb nodded. “I agree. It’s beautiful inside. Much nicer.” He said as he went in the opposite direction of Carlos to check the other side of the cabin. He opened drawers and found alcohol, rags, some busted scissors and some bullets too. He turned around to check the cabinets by old fridge.​
