Fantasy Swords Over Stalingrad

Hello. I've been fleshing out this world for the better part of a month, and to communicate all that I have created and thought up would take more time, effort, and pages upon pages, that I'm simply not willing to commit to a recruitment page.

That being said it is very reasonable that you might have questions about the world before you commit yourself to role playing in it. As such I encourage you to ask whatever comes to mind - I have an answer, I promise. Below are some questions I'd like to answer preemptively.

FAQ

Q: If there are no guns, how come I'm reading about rifles?

A: Rifles were already in production when gun powder became inert - as such it was much cheaper for the USSR to arm the overwhelming majority of conscripts with bayonetted rifles, which function basically the same as a heavy short spear

Q: There are boats, planes, trains, and tanks? How does that work?

A: Short answer - because I said so! Long answer - the weapon only made gun powder inert, not gas or diesel. This will play a critical roll in the world itself as gas and diesel are used not only as fuel, but as weapons, increasing consumption of the already limited resource.

Q: Is this story just going to be a bunch of fighting with no character interaction?

A: Not at all. The fighting is the backdrop, the canvas upon which our story will unfold. This role-play will focus much more on the interactions between the soldiers and how they end up surviving (or not) in this world. What will you do together, and how far will you go to survive?

I know you just got this up but I was wondering if there was a draft in Russia that is forcing all these people to go fight? If so, could a female potentially sneak on instead in a "Mulan-esque" situation or is that not plausible?

@FloatingAroundSpace

In short, yes it is very plausible. More detail below if you care to read that much.

During WWII (and by extension this RP) the soviet forces drafted huge swaths of the countryside. Much of Russia at the time was rural farmland - what would typically happen is a truck would come through and take all the men able to fight. They would drive to a train station, be issued their equipment, and then placed inside box cars. The train would then take the raw recruits to the front line, where they would be assigned to their regiments etc. and be sent to the front line.

While it is atypical for a female to have been drafted, there are historical instances of this happening (more often than you might think). In fact, the soviet forces had the some of the largest numbers of females actively involved in what would be considered "combat rolls." 89 of these many women would go on to achieve the Soviet Union's highest award, the "Hero of the Soviet Union" medal.

Heck, as far as I remember the Soviet Union eagerly accepted female volunteers and there have even been Soviet units completely consisting out of women. A good example would be the Night Witches, a group of female bomber crews who did night bombings on the Nazi forces when the conflict was still on Russian soil, can't remember if they were part of the later offensive into eastern Europe and Germany.

Also @Incognito are the characters limited to only conscripts or is it possible to be one of those experienced Russian soldiers that actually got good weapons and gear equiped? (For example: the few soldiers in Stalingrad that actually had helmets and PPSh-41's, but then in this setting for example crossbows?)

@Duke the Impossible the characters will be limited to the conscript rank at the time of creation. This was a creative choice on my part so that there is more room for the characters to grow and change throughout the role-play story itself. Some of you might get promoted!

@LegateGaiana just throwing it out here before Incognito has to, but the idea is that all the characters begin as conscripts and guns don't work anymore so a PPSh-41 is pretty much just dead weight. I like the rest of how you wrote your character though :)

@Duke the Impossible

Didn't realize that we couldn't not be conscripts, however I'll stick with everything but the epaulets. I realize the PPSH is dead weight after I posted it. I was literally too lazy to change it. Will do it now. Also, females historically were conscripts as home defense in Stalingrad, (Watch Enemy at the gate) along with tankers, officers and pilots.

A former farmer, a hunter from the Ural and a female farmer who volunteered. Now we only need a former priest and somebody who lived in Stalingrad and will call out everybody he lost for every German he kills xD

So, will horses/cavalry be later introduced? It'd be awesome because most of my weapons are favored by that of the Cossacks.
I remember that the Russians actually employed Cossacks during WW2 although they weren't present in Stalingrad. Would be a nice touch to have them show up though.

@LegateGaiana Cavalry were historically present during the initial invasion of the Soviet lands, before Stalingrad and the counter-attack that followed. Most were destroyed by superior german firepower. Almost all cavalry battalions were later converted into armored battalions since the recently invented T-34 was conceived of as a direct replacement. However, I have had several discussions with a close friend who has helped me flesh out the world, and we constantly go back and forth on if cavalry would be present. As of right now I won't promise anything, but its not entirely unlikely. I can say they will not be present inside the confines of Stalingrad however.

@LegateGaiana

Update: Entering my final week of exams after this coming weekend. We'll start the character acceptance process the following Friday (May 6th) and start RP that saturday (May 7th).

You're not, fill in your Conscription form asap soldier! Mama Russia needs you to fight the Nazi war machine as a meat shield, I mean brave soldier!

I like it @Blue098 but where are your papers hmmm? You have no papers? Off the boat you go illegal conscript! (B')

Jokes aside, nice character sheet. And also, it seems like my guy is kind of a giant compared to the rest of the characters xD
