Fantasy Supernatural Teenage Drama

Jackie laughed. "True, true. But have you seen the fire breathers? They're super cool. And I could do those fire-spinny things, you know what I'm talking about? I'd be freaking awesome." She bumped Alec's shoulder with hers. "We should totally just drop out of school and go join a circus, yeah?" She snickered at the mental image.

Ryan thought for a moment then responded, "Nope!" He took a cookie and ate one, "I can read minds, go through walls, and turn invisible". The teen smiled, "Oh and that whole hearing thing? That was me standing too close to the bell". Why not play around a bit? Today was the first day of school and he had to relax.

"Oh, yeah. I could be every single animal in a circus." He chuckled and then groaned as the principal's door swung open and he was called inside. He waved to Jackie before stepping into the office and sitting down.

"Already, Dryden? The first day and you've already been in a fight. What would your father say if he was here?" The principal shook his head.

Alec flinched. "I... I..." He stuttered, staring at his hands.

"You what?" He asked impatiently.

"I'm sorry," Alec muttered. He hunched his shoulders, looking much smaller than he had just seconds ago.

"You've got a detention tonight and you're banned from the shooting range for a week as punishment," the principal told him with a sigh. "Send the other boy in after you. Tell Armstrong she can go. What she did was an accident."

Alec nodded and trudged out of the office, shoulders hunched. He waved the other boy in before walking by Jackie and mumbling, "He said you could go."

"Oh, ok." Miuna didn't question it at first, but as soon as she thought about it a bit more, it clicked that he was throwing her off. "But I was standing right next to you," she thought aloud. "Also, you picked up those two boys like they were made of feathers. So that makes strength one of your powers. What else?" Miu ran over the possibilities. "Maybe reading minds? But bells don't have minds, so that wouldn't work." She wracked her brain, trying to figure him out. "I don't know," she finally admitted, giving up and taking another cookie.

"What? Seriously?" Jackie said. She was about to say something along the lines of "hell yes", but noticed Alec seemed upset. She touched his shoulder tentatively. "Hey... you okay? What did he say?" Alec seemed like the type to not really care about what authority said. She reached up and ruffled his hair, trying to be comforting. "Well, anyway, let's get out of here at the very least." She tugged Alec out of the lobby, and into the bustling hallway. It was passing period.

Alec let her pull him down the hallway. He didn't speak until they were in one of the courtyards. "He asked me what my dad would say if he could see me now. And I just..." Alec shrugged, looking down. "My dad died when I was 7. That's why I've been here for 9 years. And I just never wanted to let him down. But that's what I've done." He scuffed his shoe back and forth over the pavement.

Ryan smiled, "I can read minds...Answer my question. What are we eating?" He paused then smiled, "Don't say it! Cookies! Bam, just read your mind. I can go through walls, but I would have to break them. I can turn invisible too". The teen waited for her to blink her eyes and he ran up the roof with his speed before she opened them again.

Miuna looked around, reaching out to where Ryan had been. "That's so cool," she said softly, feeling around the air to find him. "But also kind of scary. It's like you're not even here anymore." Something about not being able to see someone with her normal eye or her spirit eye set her on edge. "You didn't leave, did you? That's horrible, Ryan," she called teasingly when there was no response.

Jackie just looked at Alec for a couple heartbeats. Then, she pulled him into a hug, standing on her tiptoes as high as she could. "I'm sorry," she said, patting his back. "Number one, that was a low blow from the principle. Number two, I don't know why you got in that fight, but I'm sure it was for a perfectly good reason. And anyway, your dad would understand, but people screw up sometimes, yeah? Give yourself a break." She squeezed him. "But I think it's a good thing that you want to make your dad proud. Keeps you out of trouble." Jackie smiled at him, but couldn't fully hide the complicated feelings churning inside her.

Jordan looked back at Rob, her bad mood was still lingering, but she felt relieved. She smiled softly, "Thank you. You know for a while there, you had me worried. I thought I scared you." She looked down then back up at him, "That's why I don't go around sharing my power to others. If I did... Well..." She laughed softly without humor, but more of pain. "You're one of the first people to actually accept me, so again thank you..." She looked at him sincerely.

"I won't tell anyone, I know what it's like to be rejected. My family doesn't speak to me anymore... I'm an Orphan basically..." He looked down a little, "but don't let that get ya down." He looked up and smiled.

Alec was surprised at first, but then he smiled slightly and hugged her back. "Thanks, I guess. But no, I went looking for a fight. Told someone off and I should've stopped with just telling him. Didn't need to turn it into a physical fight." He shrugged and looked down again. "Especially not with using my power. You know how it is with that." When Alec got upset, his accent thickened, like it was now.

Jordan couldn't help but frown and she studied him for a moment then crossed her arms, and replied gently "If you want to talk about it, I'm open to listen. You can trust me. Why don't they speak to you anymore...?" She asked concern filling her features.

Jackie stepped back. "I'm sorry, I'm a really huggy person. And yeah, I do. A lot more than some people here. But it happens sometimes." She patted his shoulder. "I guess all you can do is try to not let it happen again." She smiled at him then, and said, "Nice accent, by the way. Irish?"

"They're all regulars. I don't like the term ungifted, I turned one day out of anger and destroyed the kitchen... After that they sent me here, and they don't want me back... That's why when I'm done I'm going back, but to be a hero... This talk of... War? That's crazy to me..."

"Yeah." He nodded and started walking again. "Got sent over here because I've got no other family and my dad was a bit paranoid. This is the only place he trusted." He tipped his head back and stared up at the sky. "What about you? Where are you from, Jackie?" He asked.

Ryan heard her from his distance then sped back to her, "I was on the roof". He smiled then continued, "Honestly, I have enhanced physical abilities". He sat down then looked at Miu, "How about you? What can you do?" The teen noticed some new kids heading to their next class at a super early time.

Jordan felt saddened from his explanation and she looked at him, "I'm sorry. That must be terrible." She thought of her own family life. Although it wasn't the best, it wasn't nearly as bad as Rob's. Her older sister Renee, who was eighteen, completely hated the idea of Jordan being gifted, and constantly was calling her a witch. To say the least, they didn't get along. However, her little sister Lindsey, who was twelve, absolutely adored her gift and was always by her side. Jordan loved Lindsey with all her heart. Her parents and Jordan got along, but they had their typical arguments. Jordan forced her thoughts back to Rob's words, "And war... It just seems so unnecessary. I really hope it doesn't happen." Jordan was aware that they were on the edge of a forbidden subject at school, but she was taking the risk.

Jackie jogged to catch up with Alec. Not her fault she had short legs. But at his question, she stopped short. "Uh. Um. Well..." she sighed. She guessed he had the right to know, since he had told her about him. "My parents both... died... in a fire." Catching Alec's look, she shook her head. "No, not mine. They were actually both firefighters. It's just your average touching story, you know. Firefighter hears trapped child. Firefighter saves child. Firefighter doesn't make it out. The usual." She smiled sadly. "Guess fire runs in the family, huh? It happened when I was in second grade, so I've been here ever since." She shrugged. "Aside from being an orphan, it's been pretty great, actually."

"Ooh, that's handy." Miu sighed in relief when she was able to see him again. "I can see dead things," she stated bluntly, the dark statement in direct contrast to her innocent demeanor. "I can also talk to them, and sometimes control them." Her right eye went out of focus as her left eye kicked in, demonstrating her ability. Without a word, she pointed to a spider crawling on the ground and watched as the spirits attacked it, smashing it to bits. Once she was finished, she focused her right eye again and turned back to Ryan, sporting a cheeky smile.

"Ah. I'm sorry. I don't remember my mom much, so it's not as bad, I suppose." Reaching the other side of the courtyard, he pulled open the door and held it for a moment while she walked inside. "Yeah, I remember you being here over the summer. There's enough of us who stay." Many kids still had their families. Their families just didn't want them. So, like Alec and Jackie, they stayed at the boarding school year round.

Ruby watched as with mild interest as the paper cut on her middle finger healed up, the pain disappearing as her body worked with her powers. Classes had been interesting but slow and despite herself, she couldn't seem to keep her mind off planning the latest party or trying to sort through the latest boy trouble gossip that had been revealed after the break. It was all so difficult to stay on top, but she had to try. Her life in and out of school was the most important thing to her. Looking up, she realized she had gone a little further than planned and sighed. She was going to be late in meeting up with her friends.

"Hey? Where am I? Seven years at this school and I still haven't memorized it all." She remarked turning to two students she definitely did not know.

Ryan looked at Miu and blinked a couple of times, "Are you just getting me back? You could have at least chosen somethin-" He stopped himself when she saw her space out a bit and look at a spider. "Oh interesting" Ryan said scanning the area, "Are any of them here?" The teen turned to Ruby and responded, "Courtyard. Want a cookie?" He held the cookie plate up.

Upon leaving the classroom, Ryder noticed a girl who seemed lost and was talking to herself. She was pretty cute, but that didn't matter much to him. "You need help?" he called from inside. There weren't many people left in the hallway, allowing his voice to actually be heard for once. Ryder made his way out the door to where a group of familiar faces had gathered.

Miuna nodded. "They're all over. There are a lot of dead people in the world," she explained. When Ryan offered the girl a cookie, her eyes widened. "Oh, I think I know you," she murmured. "Was it Rory?" she guessed incorrectly. She was never any good with names.

Rob looked at Jordan, "If.. If it came to that, I'd protected my friends.. but only if they were defending themselves.. and not the aggressors... We're too powerful. Even though my parents disowned me, its because I scared them... if they were to meet me now, know who I am, it would all be much different."
