Mackenzie didn’t have any grand plans for reasons why Ashley-May couldn’t go on this mission and she hated the idea of Will being pushed into it himself in lieu of Ash. “You can’t go, Councilmen.” She stated simply, knowing very well he needed to attend the meetings and actually be within Vitae to do what he’s supposed to do. “If they need a fourth they can have me, I know how to keep someone stitched together long enough to get them to emerg.” Typically it was herself that she was stitching and simply figured it would be far easier to do it to someone else.
As they approached the Command tent they could already see Brendan there, with the three people Ashley-May had mentioned. Bruce and Aiden she recognized but the third she did not entirely. He was mildly familiar, like she’d known him once before but couldn’t really place it. She was not surprised to see Brendan’s annoyed expression and braced for the onslaught of his anger.
Brendan witnessed the Councilmen and his aide approaching hand in hand once more and while he still thought the pair of them odd; wasn’t Mackenzie with Ashley-May? He simply ignored it as trivial information, not worth inquiring. He was not surprised to see the pair instead of the medic he had assigned, and sighed heavily. Before either of them could speak he stepped away from the waiting trio to approach them. “As much as I would like to hear the reason why you’re both here instead of Ashley-May, save it. Normally I’d fight you, but we’ve got an ace in the pocket for his mission.” He glanced to Mackenzie briefly before turning his focus back to William, the far more reasonable one to deal with of the pair. “Have you two made your decision then? The Council has already decided its vote, even before it’s been taken: they want Skye gone for bringing Franklin here. “He paused briefly. “Have you decided I can expose her for the Oracle to keep her here?”
Morgan gave a growl at Chase’s final suggestion, speaking to the colony. She turned from the sink to face the two at the table, hands dripping with suds, but Emile prevented her from speaking. The shift in his position on his chair, the slight tilt of his head was more than enough to indicate she was about to over step her bounds. She turned back to the sink and pulled the plug, letting the water drain before drying her hands. In a moment of annoyed defiance she tossed the towel onto the countertop instead of re-hanging it over the handle of the stove before striding to the front door and exiting.
Emile waited quietly and patiently as he niece had her ‘moment’ and when the door slammed behind her he cleared his throat. “Six mois… er. Months ago a hunter called me. Called Malcolm actually. La Chasseur hear from un loup he kill here about the Abyss, the premier Sin. He call and ask if it is true, he hear same thing when he go to Borseti. We tell him what our Prophet says, what the Prophet say for hundred of years. “ He paused for a moment, wanting to express the remainder clearly. “He tell the Council. He told Elders of Vitae and they deny, told him we lied.” He gave a little huff at the final word, rather insulted by this insinuation. “He told them he was to leave. To come to the pack, as a human, to see for himself. They threatened his family. Told him if he leaves the colony, steps outside the walls, they will exile his loves and friends. Not all want to be pack, but they don’t deserve to be exile from their homes.” He took a sip of his coffee before clearing his throat.
“We come to speak to Vitae, they do not listen. We ask to free the ones that want to be Pack, they deny and threaten their families. Now we will go and free them ourselves.”
Christopher glanced to his father as he went to speak to the newest Councilmen and Skye, seeing her instead of Ashley-May told him all he needed to know; that the fourth would not be attending. At the very least they had been told that Thor would be leaving on this mission with them, that the god would meet them on the road to New Jersey. He turned back to the other men with a shrug. “Guess we hit the road.”
Within a few minutes they were packed into the Christopher’s SUV and exiting the gates of Vitae.
