Door would open and she would offer Elijah a smile, Ashley was about to comment on William and Mackenzie earlier awkward reactions when the man stepped back and revealed William was in the room.  "Ah," She'd nod towards William.  "Just the man I wanted to see." She lied, and no doubt it was easily seen through.  "How's Mackenzie's back?  Sutures look good?"

Will was caught momentarily off-guard, but quickly responded. "Yeah, the sutures were secure. No sign of SSI. Good call on the ice -- it seemed to help with the pain and swelling."

Elijah pursed his lips, looking back and forth between William and Ash. As close as he'd been to her, he noticed the woman's briefly jarred reaction upon spotting Will. The last thing he'd do was call her out in front of him; he had learned his lesson about that for the night. The gears in his head began turning to find a way to chat with Ash privately without arousing Will's suspicion. He didn't imagine whatever it was was life-and-death, but his curiosity was piqued.

As it happened, the solution came on its own as Will stood up, grabbing a handful of clothes from his bag. "Early start tomorrow," he explained, moving toward the door. "Might as well get a shower now."

"Thanks." Ashley would reply, she was happy to hear the ice worked, it was often the simplest way to for Mackenzie to feel relief; the woman was prone to adverse reactions to drugs.  "Great, well it's a relief to hear, just wanted another medics opinion."  William was collecting his gear and stepping past her, excusing himself from the room.  Ashley's eyes would watch Eli, listening intently for his partners movements; she wouldn't speak until she hear the bathroom door close firmly behind him.  Sly grin came to her lips and she'd laugh a little. "That was almost very awkward, on my part."  She would shift to lean causally on the door frame, arms crossing she continued.  "I have come here, sir, to discuss your partners intentions with Mac."

Elijah chuckled at the statement, turning to walk from the door and sit on his bed, gesturing for Ash to enter if she wished. "Noticed that, have you?" He sighed. "I think 'intentions' would be a bit generous. He hasn't mentioned anything to me, nor will he. William's a good Hunter -- a natural. He's quick on his feet, observant... but when it comes to things like this?" Eli's smile returned. "He's about as clueless as a teenage boy at his first school dance. It's obvious he cares about her, but beyond that... I honestly have no idea. I doubt he does, either."

Davenport shrugged noncommittally. "I'm assuming you have concerns of your own on the matter?"

Hypnos could see that his presence wasn't wanted in the home and with night quickly approaching he had his own duties to perform. As Mackenzie disappeared into a different room all but ignoring Hypnos the deity too disappeared from mortal sight. As the Sun sank under the horizon Hypnos met with his mother Nyx as he began her procession across the sky to bring night. Following behind his mother Hypnos turned his horn downward and a thin gas only spiritual beings such as angels or demons could see began to fall towards earth.

Ashley would accept the invitation, stepping into the men's room and take a seat at the edge of the bed opposite Eli, she laughed and nodded, "Yea I can see that,"  William certainly had not been very covert about his feelings, but neither had Mac.  Ashley would sigh and lean back, prompted up on her elbows.  "Concerns, yes.... But for William, not Mackenzie."  She'd offer Elijah a smile.  "I've never seen her act like that before, not around anyone, even myself, but I'm worried about William.  She's..."  Ash would pause, searching for the right words, "Well you know, you've seen it.  She get's... dark, some times, like nothing matters, like she doesn't feel anything."  She shrugged slightly.  "Just worried William will get invested and Mac will do what she does best; run."

M1w8MMG.jpg

Elijah considered that, idly scratching his forehead. "So I noticed. I wasn't going to ask, but after that incident earlier in the living room..." he shook his head as if to dispel that train of thought entirely.

"If I'm being perfectly honest, William isn't the most well-adjusted person, either. The things that led him to start Hunting, and even before that..." He shrugged. "That prosthetic leg may be his most obvious injury, but it's not his worst." His face became scrunched up as he searched for the proper way to voice his thoughts. "It's not... the thing that cripples him."

Elijah leaned back, spreading his arms wide. "But, at the end of the day, they're both adults. And who knows? Maybe it's that shared perspective that lets them work together. Two tortured souls recognizing a kindred spirit," he remarked, a bit lightly. He knew he was getting close to rambling at this point. He understood Ashley's concerns and to an extent he shared them, for both their sakes. Still, he could protect William from a lot of things, but he wasn't sure this was one of them... and he wasn't sure he wanted to in this case.

Ashley nodded solemnly as Elijah described William's history, rather vaguely, but she'd learnt the hard way over the years, you don't pry into other hunter's pasts, not unless you want to witness it come back.  "Tortured is an understatement." She'd remark, "And I wouldn't call Mackenzie an adult.  I mean, she's old, but if left to her own devices..."  Ash would give Eli a shrug, "Maybe William can rein her in?"  It was an idea Ashley liked.  "Calm her down, she's the kind to be rather reckless, with herself, she'd never risk anyone else.  This might be a good change for her, unless of course she corrupts William, but he doesn't seem the type."

M1w8MMG.jpg

"William? Corrupted into recklessness?" Elijah asked with a laugh. "That'd be a sight. I'm sure he'd still be giving me grief for speeding on the way back to Vitae after the attack if he thought he could get away with it." It was an exaggeration, of course, but not by that much. William had always been the methodical one in their Hunts -- he took surprising risks sometimes, but at least he was consistent. "Maybe they would be good for each other," he said, thoughtfully. "But that still begs the question: what now? The two of them are about as stubborn as mules and I don't get the sense that they'd be willing to talk openly about this whole thing."

Ashley smirked at the thought of William scolding Eli, she'd witness plenty of his silent glares, and honestly hoped none would come her way; she wasn't afraid of him in any sense, but it was as simple as she didn't want the disappointed dad look turned on her.  "Well we start by making them actually be around each other, I think the ice pack thing did them some good.  Next time either of them need something, just volunteer the other to help?"  Something came to mind and she'd grin.  "Oh they do have that hot date tomorrow, car part shopping."  She laughed quietly, uncertain of how long William would be away.  "I'll talk to Mac tonight, see if I can get anything out of her," She'd pause, glancing towards the doorway, speaking softer.  "Might put the idea in her head if I bring it up."  Ashley loved the idea of Mackenzie finding someone, even if it were temporary, she'd never seen her partner care for anyone but herself, Ashley was a fond believer of happily ever after, no matter how twisted the story was to get there.

M1w8MMG.jpg

Elijah laughed out loud before quickly stifling it. He raised a hand to Ash in apology. "I'm sorry, there's just something morbidly amusing about the two of us playing matchmaker in the middle of all this." He shook his head ruefully. "But Hell, I'm with you. I'll do what I can to help. I know he'll be tight-lipped about the whole thing, but I might able to pull something out of him if I keep it subtle." Elijah paused. "Thank you, by the way. Most Hunters wouldn't bother with this with all that's going on, but it's nice to have a change of pace that's not all doom and gloom."

GxQZJgl.jpg

Ashley would giggle, biting her lip to try and quiet herself, "Well I'm happy to have a partner in crime for this, we need a change of pace, and I don't know about William, but Mac isn't really the type to push things aside and enjoy the moment.  She's always planning and calculating. Even after a job's done, she'd already looking for the next."  She'd shake her head some.  "She hasn't stopped since we got here, not since the thing at Alliance.  She might not talk about it, but I know, she'd thinking about it constantly."  She smiled weakly.  "Here hoping William will be enough to distract her."

M1w8MMG.jpg

"William's the same way. I don't know if it's the Soldier in him, or if he's always been that way. 'Uptight' doesn't even begin to describe it," Elijah chuckled, before flicking his eyes to the floor. "He was beginning to improve, but with his new job and him feeling like the protection of Vitae is on his shoulders..." he looked back up at Ash with a smile. "Let's hope the 'distraction' is mutual."

"Glad to hear we're on the same page."  She was standing then, moving back towards the door way, she wanted to be gone before William returned, didn't need him any more suspicious of her actions today.  "I'm going to go see what Mac's up to, get this ship sailing."  She'd give Eli a wink and step out of the bedroom back into the hall way.  Ashley wasn't really sure where Mackenzie had gone, but given her boots were gone, she could safely assume outside.  She'd wander down the hall way and pull open the front door; her assumption had paid off.

Mackenzie would look upwards from the crate she was rummaging though, an assortment of pieces lay spread across the lowered tail-gate and she could see Ashley's confusion.  "It's for a trap." She'd explain and then continued seeing Ashley frown.  "We're going to get Vitae into shape the hard way.  We're going to trap and wolf and bring it back here...."  She'd trail off seeing Ashley's expression change from confusion to concern.

"Where, exactly, do you plan on doing this and with who?"  Ashley was crossing her arms, annoyed that she hadn't been included in the planning process.

Mac would reply, rather sheepishly.  "Errm.  William and Eli?"  Seeing Ashley's frown she'd quickly add.  "And you, you'll be with William."  She would offer to try and make this work, there had to be compromises, and having two medics out on the run would not be a bad thing.

Not long after Ashley left, William entered. He was dressed in a pair of sweatpants and a simple tee shirt. He placed his bag of toiletries back in his bag, turning to look at Elijah. "Did Ashley leave?"

Eli had his nose buried in another obscure book on the occult, nodding without returning eye contact. "Yeah, you just missed her."

"Oh," William said, sitting down at his bed. "What did the two of you talk about?"

"Just the basics. The plans for defending the Colony, your new job, Mac..." Eli listed off the items casually.

"Mac?" Will asked quickly, before quickly moderating his tone. "What about her?"

Eli resisted the urge to smile. "The little incident earlier, not to mention her and Ashley's background together." It was close enough to the truth. "Why?"

William decided to change the direction of the conversation. "No reason. Listen, speaking of Mac, the two of us came up with a plan. We'll need your help."

All business, then. Time to shelf the matchmaking for now. Eli sat up, turning to face Will for the first time. "What do you have in mind?"

Will took a deep breath before plunging in. "There's a good chance the Council will veto any involvement from vampires, 'friendly' or otherwise... and that's assuming the people don't riot first when they hear what we have in mind. Mac and I decided it might be best so stage a little 'demonstration'. Capture a live werewolf, have a little show and tell. Make it real for the people here, make sure they understand that what's waiting for them is worse than any alternative."

Eli's eyes went wide as he whistled. "Not bad, Sergeant. Not the kind of approach I'd expect from you."

Will shrugged. "Desperate times."

"Indeed," Elijah remarked. "But it still leaves the question of how we capture a live werewolf." Understanding dawned in his eyes a moment later. "I'm guessing Mackenzie has some plans in that regard?"

"Yes, she has a mechanical trap that she's used before. She's crafting one as we speak." Will's tone took on a slightly grim aspect. "She's also offered to use herself as a lure."

Elijah closed his eyes, rubbing at his forehead. "It makes sense, I suppose... but it'll be dangerous."

"I know. That's why you're going with her," Will said flatly, receiving only raised eyebrows in return. "You have some experience with this, Eli. Your family history..."

Davenport's mouth formed a thin line, his jaw set at the mention. After several moments, he nodded. "Of course. I'll help."

Ashley's attention would turn towards the odds and ends laid out in some sort of organization she couldn't understand.  She would frown once more before asking.  "Dougies Trap?"  She didn't need to see Mackenzie's nod to confirm, this was something Mac had described to her in the past, idle conversation while Mac had been training her, teaching her to Hunt and not die.  "Alright, let's get this inside, you missing stuff?"  She set about collecting the odds and ends, being certain to keep them in the same order Mackenzie had laid them out.

Mackenzie was a little surprised at Ashley's acceptance of her plan, that she was alright with them trapping a wolf, but of course, Mac had left out that she would be the bait.  She'd close up the final crate she'd been searching, pushing it back into place then collected what ever objects Ashley couldn't carry.  Truck back in order, the two would head back into the house, to the living room where there was the most space.

Ashley knew how Mackenzie's mind worked, seen her build (or rebuild) all sorts of things in the past, mostly her Baby.  She'd push the coffee table out of the way with her knees, and start laying out the pieces the way she'd found them, Mackenzie following suit.

It wasn't long before William had fallen asleep in his bed, having finally lost the battle to fatigue. He'd had the presence of mind to set an alarm, so at least he wouldn't be late rising tomorrow for the council meeting. Elijah gave his sleeping form an amused glance, his eyes flicking idly to the prosthesis resting next to the end table. Quietly shutting his book, Elijah swung his legs clear of his own bed and slipped out of the bedroom, shutting the door behind him as he made his way into the living room.

He stopped short upon seeing Ash and Mac hard at work, laying out various odds and ends that no doubt made up the trap Will had mentioned. He let out an appreciative whistle; just seeing the components gave him an idea of the ultimate form and function of the device. He wouldn't have been surprised to find out that his own family had used something not so different, once upon a time. "Burning the midnight oil, I see," he remarked lightly -- despite Will's slumber, it wasn't all that late yet.

Alex climbed onto a roof in the middle of the town. She watched as the streets thinned and the sky grew dark, allowing her to take off her sunglasses and hood. She had hung up on her friend, and sat in silence. She mulled over the fact that she found werewolves out in the forest. Were there more of them? She wouldn't be surprised. There hardly ever are just two or three. She sighed and lay back, watching the stars, listening to the peaceful sounds of the night.

Hypnos had returned from his duties of spreading sleep to this side of the earth and even managed to find a good lead on his wife. On the entire western hemisphere there was only one place that his power couldn't easily get into. The office building of some sort of global conglomerate.  They apparently had a dig in Egypt going on at the moment and their offices seemed to be awarded against pretty much anything. Even he had a hard time getting in there and one of his titles was the conqueror of all! Still when he forced his way in he couldn't get very far. There were too many layers of security and even if he was a God he wasn't about to charge in there with no plan and no back up.

Still in a incorporal form Hypnos had listened to Elijah and Ashley plot their matchmaking as well as their defense plans. Both of which were really quite sound plans, and while he couldn't help much with the defense he could do his part on the romance front.

Rather than manipulating their dreams into something... perverse like he would do for normal humans Hypnos simply linked their dreams together and allowed their unconscious minds to share a dream together.

Both women turned upon hearing Elijah's voice, but only Mackenzie would reply,  "Was..." She'd glance back to the bits and pieces she'd put together. "But not enough to actually start, I'll have to go through the junkyard tomorrow when I pick up my parts." She'd shrug and look back to Eli.  "Hopefully William won't mend."  Mackenzie would stand and test stretch her back, most the ice packs numbness was gone; it was never meant to be a sure fix.  "I'm heading off, Good Night, Eli."  Mackenzie would slip down the hall way and disappear into her and Ashley's bedroom, hoping to find sleep before the pain returned to her back.

Ashley moved from where she'd been crouched over the parts Mackenzie had selected to seat herself in the lounge chair, sideways, hooking her legs over the arm she would regard Eli and speak softly.  "So it begins...." She'd give him a wink then continue.  "Did you hear about the wolf trap?"

Elijah nodded. "I did. William filled me in. I'm surprised he went along with it, considering the risks involved," Eli said casually, surveying the arrayed parts. It never occurred to him that Ash may not have been privy to all the relevant information about the plan, especially Mac's involvement.

The sound of the heart monitor beeping was the only thing audible in the tiny room. The space was white, sterile. Cold. Will couldn't bring himself to look toward the foot of the bed, towards his leg... or what was left of it. So he laid still, like a corpse. He felt like one at this point; it seemed trivial to act the part as well. He was beginning to doze off in a haze of pain medication when he heard the door to his room open. He turned, expecting to see a nurse or perhaps one of the attending doctors. Instead, he saw an older man in street clothes. He was in his mid-to-late fifties, undeniably fit for his age.

"Hello, Sergeant," the man said.

"Who are you?" Will asked with a frown.

"Someone who's interested in your story. I heard about what happened in Afghanistan."

Hendrix narrowed his eyes. "You're not government. You're not a journalist, either."

"You're right, I'm not," the old man said, easing into a chair alongside Will's bed.

"Then who the hell are you?"

The man leaned toward Will's bed, elbows resting on his knees and fingers steepled. "My name is Derek Shaw."

"And what is it you want, Mister Shaw?"

Derek smiled somberly. "I came to offer you the truth about what happened to you and your buddies that night. I can't promise that you'll like it."

Will's jaw set as he stared at the older man's features. He saw no sign of deception, of malice. "Tell me."

dx0HE3H.jpg

Ashley's smile would fade, "Risks?  What risks?"  She was shifting to sit forward, cursing herself for not asking Mackenzie details; believing that if William was involved it would be safe.  "We're setting a trap and catching a wolf to put on display.

Mackenzie was far more exhausted that she'd originally thought, slipping off into sleep almost as soon as she climbed into bed.

Adrenaline.  She was fighting it.  Inhaling deeply.  Exhaling slowly through the leather visor of her helm.  Breath escaping if a fog in the cold night's air.  Snow; several inches of it covering the ground and everything else in the quiet street.  She felt like an idiot.  Like a cosplaying fool, but it was the only way he would let her leave.

She shifted, rolling her shoulders, hard leather pauldrons creaking with first time use.  They stunk like leather and chemicals, layer upon layer of leather lovingly and carefully laid, each edge stripped with sharp silver.  Hands would flex the clawed gloves, testing.  Feedback in her right ear, causing her to wince, hand rising to her helm, the noise would leave and his voice resounded inside the helm.  "Your heart rate is too high, you're not ready Skye."

"I'm fine."  Months.  It had been months since the last time she'd been out, free, since she'd hunted.

"You're not, I'm calling this off, come home."

Howls in the night, she'd glance left, to see another hunter, like her but not, vampire.  To the right, the same.  She was not alone; she was exactly where she belonged.  With the Monsters.  "Too late."

Elijah paused, biting the inside of his lip. He knew he had slipped up. He briefly considered making some noncommittal remark and hoping Ash would write the whole thing off, but one look at the young woman dismissed that idea. Time to face the music. "It probably won't surprise you that Mackenzie offered herself up as a lure for the wolves," he said, stoically.

The howl pierced the night sky. Will whirled around to look at Shaw. He nodded. "You hear that?" the older man asked rhetorically.

"...Is that--" Will began to ask.

"Yeah, that's a werewolf alright. You never forget that sound," Derek said, drawing the 1911 pistol from under his jacket.

William scanned either side of the street. They'd tracked the creature to the slums outside of Topeka, where it had been ambushing the homeless during full moons, feasting on their hearts. Now Hendrix glanced at the darkened alleyways and boarded up buildings, his heart beating faster with each and every moment.

"No, please--" a desperate voice screamed out, unmistakably less than a block away.

Without a word, both Hunters took off in the direction of the sound.

With the two soon to be lovebirds taken care of Hypnos decided it was time to put his own plans into action. His Oracle was still inside the city and he needed to do his duty to the boy and warn him of the dangers, but Hypnos would give every sleeping person within the Colony a premonition of things to come. As the Bringer of Prophetic Dreams Hypnos figured it was only appropriate that the people of the Colony know exactly what was in store for them, and who would always help if they only asked.

Hypnos would spend the night weaving nightmares for the Council and the people of the Colony. They would endlessly be slaughtered by the werewolves until at least one person called his name or had the for thought to help William. Mackenzie and the group.

"Of course she did."  Ashley would shake her head and lean back in the chair, "Because of course there wouldn't be any other reasonable way to do this, she would have to be the bate.  And she would have to be in the middle of it, because if she wasn't, then she wouldn't have a plan."  Ashley would inhale deeply then exhale slowly, calming herself.  "I would assume the part where she said you'd be with her, you're okay with.  The wolves I mean?"

"No, please--" a desperate voice screamed.

Mackenzie and the two vampires had been in a dead run when she'd heard the voice, the scream.  She skidded to halt in the snow, head whipping around, where had it come from?

Another baying of howls, now down an alley, not far.  She was running again, vampire escort on her heels, silent.

Around the corner where she'd heard the howl, thought she heard the scream come from.  There! A cowering human, a wolf, not the one she'd been hunting, this one was not pure.

Twin vampire escorts surpassed her, part of the plan.  They attacked the lone wolf, driving it away from the human, easily evading it's wild strikes.

Mackenzie was arriving, placing herself between wolf and civilian; waiting for her moment, but it didn't come.

Instead more howls were in the night, the ones she'd expected, the ones she'd been searching for, back down the alley she'd come from.
