Dayne Matthews

Dayne nodded in response to the guard and made his way inside, moving along the streets of the colony towards its centre.

He also kept an eye out for the man in his Vision in case he encountered him. He felt a pair of eyes on him as he came into the colony.

This soon passed but he could not shake the feeling as he had stood by the front gates.

He neared the center of the colony and looked around, finding out that he did not have any idea what the man he was sent to looked like.

Biting his lip, he looked around for any sign of someone who could help.

It was then he saw the familiar face from the vision he was sent.

Walking over he tapped the man on the shoulder

"Excuse me, I just arrived and I was told to find someone called Jonathan Diffy. I am to report to him"

William stood in the hallway, leaning against the opposite wall to take in a deep breath. The task in front of him seemed monumental; the Council along with everyone else in the colony would be looking to him in some fashion. Any action he took was a gamble and the stakes would be paid out in lives saved or lost. He wasn't alone -- Elijah having his back was a given and the Council members themselves would not be sitting idle... but he needed someone else. A right hand, someone he could trust. Someone capable. A person who knew the threat and was willing to do whatever it took to put an end to it...

His eyes drifted to the door of Mackenzie's room. Someone who knows the threat...

Pushing aside his own mind's protests that he was making a mistake and that she'd never go for it, Hendrix took several self-conscious steps forward. He stood outside the door, hand raised and hovering for several moments. Finally, he forced himself to knock twice.

Brendan was surprised by the tap, mostly so because people didn't often approach him without great need, he'd turn to face the young man and offer a welcoming smile. "Ah, a new recruit, well welcome to Vitae."  He'd hand the documents he was holding over to another man standing near him before turning to look around the center of town before catching sight of the person Dayne was searching for. "Jon!"  He'd call out and catch the sight of a elder man, likely in his sixties, the portly man made his way to Brendan and smile to Dayne as well.  "Look's like Bart sent him up here for you, Jon."  Brendan would nod towards the other Councilmen and take his leave.

Jon would hold out a hand as offering to Dayne, "Sure you know, I'm Jon Diffey, Gate guard told you to see me, right?"  He'd chuckle.  "Looks like you need a hot meal."

Ashley had exited the house pensively, uncertain of the climate outside, she knew that William and gone and returned seemingly without issue, so she could only assume the raging mob of villagers had dispersed.  She made her way to the Mess Hall, intent on finding what she'd need to make a decent Hash for dinner, hoping to brighten Mac's mood.

Mackenzie had settled, delicately, at top the bed, finally finding a position that didn't strain the muscles in her back, but provided a small allowance of comfort when she heard the knock at the bedroom door.  She'd close her eyes and inhale slowly, calming herself, or at least trying to, she was doing what she could to sooth the seething anger within, but she'd hand enough.  Rising from the bed, painfully slow she'd sit at it's edge for a long moment, letting the pain subside before shuffling stiffly to the door way.  She'd open it forcefully, letting it swing wide, and she was just a little surprised to see William on the other side.  Features etched with pain she did her best to play up a false smile. "What is it with you and knocking today, Doc?"

Will grinned. "Chalk it up to me testing your mobility," he said. In truth, the knock had been to gauge her interest in even taking any visitors at this point. He hadn't expected to her to even allow him inside, much less answer the door herself. Remaining at the treshold, not intent on pressing his luck, Hendrix leaned against the door frame. "I met with Brendan and the others. There's something I need to talk to you about." He cleared his throat. "Privately."

As Hypnos slept on the couch his consciousness flew over to the other side of the earth where night had already fallen and his duty already fulfilled. Now he was here to find a lead on his wife. Using his power Hypnos opened a portal into the Dream World. A place where all of his children the dreams reside. It was here that he could craft special dreams or watch and review dreams. Hypnos would spend several hours within the Dream world combing through the subconscious minds of all the sleeping mortals to no effect. No a single mortal saw or knew anything to the effect of his wife. Well with every bad omen there was also good. This meant she wasn't on this side of the earth, and that whatever was going on. It was going to happen in the west.

Mackenzie's false smile faded with Williams rather serious tone, he'd spoke to the Elder, and now needed to speak to her?  This certainly did not bode well.  She'd thought with the disbursement of the angry crowd meant that she was in the clear, but now she was beginning to worry otherwise.  She'd keep her feelings from changing her expression and step back into the room, allowing William entrance.  She would make her way back to the bed, once more in the slow shuffle that seemed to incite the least amount of discomfort.  "So," she'd speak, glancing over her shoulder to him as she moved. "Firing squad at dawn?"  Once at the bedside she'd take care to sit at it's edge again, pushing aside journals to clear space for herself and William if he chose.

William entered the room, stopping just short of the bed and crossing his arms. He scoffed, smiling at the comment. "Please. You and I both know they can't afford to waste the ammo," he said. The smile slowly faded as he spoke again. "From what I've heard and seen, I think most of the guys that were after you have been... appeased. I'm not gonna tell you not to keep watching your back, but I think the worst of it is behind us." He cleared his throat. "The Council wanted me to see if you had anything you could share about the Pack that might help." He glanced at the arrayed collection of research materials on the bed. "...But it looks like you're way ahead of them as far as that's concerned."

Hendrix hesitated, considering how to proceed. Brendan's recommendation that he keep Mack in the dark about his newfound position echoed in his mind... and it made some sense. But looking at Mackenzie now, he knew he couldn't do it. He wasn't willing to risk it for a momentary bit of leverage. Slowly, self-consciously, Will took a seat on the bed alongside Mackenzie, making sure to leave some modicum of personal space for her. "And there's something else. The Council... they asked me to join them for the time being. To help 'coordinate'. I said yes."

Mackenzie wouldn't deny feeling a little bit of comfort hearing the unruly tenants of Vitae had been compelled to end their attempts to either rid her of the colony or kill her; she was still uncertain of which they had intended, but it wasn't as thought she was going to ask any of them.  She'd watch Williams expression, confused now as to why the Council would send him to speak to her, it had been Brendan the night before, trying to get anything out of her.  She'd assisted, for the most part, but he'd wanted details of her life she was quite willing to give up, willing to openly share, most would frown upon her life choices, she knew other hunters certainly would without question.

He'd move to sit near her, and she could hear the hesitation in his voice, it confused her more so as to why he seemingly felt the need to speak to her carefully, it wasn't as thought they'd known each other long, and she couldn't imagine him feeling hurt if he'd lost their short lived friendship, but then a cold shiver ran down her spine as she listen to what he needed to say.  "I said yes."  She was frozen, dark eyes watching him, she couldn't stop her facial features from reacting her emotions, first shock then horror.

"You're an idiot." There was simply no way she was going to let him do this, he was too smart.  "And if we live through this?  Those of us that aren't dead or Turned.  How many do you think will live?" Voice was cold, harsh, but she wasn't letting him answer. "Fifty percent is a generous number, do you think those surviving are going to thank you for your effort?  No, they're going to blame you for the loss, the council wants your help because you're not from here, and you'll be easy to blame."  She couldn't sit still, rising from the bed she'd pace away quiet, considering, before turning back towards him.  She hated herself for thinking this way, seeing him, he reminded her of Ashley.  He wasn't like her, born to the world of darkness, he could still see light. She'd inhale slowly before speaking again, calmer.  "Maybe it's because I'm a glass half empty person, but I've Hunted and killed Monsters my whole life, and humans are by-far the worst beings that exist." She'd pause again, quelling the want to run, to flee.  "I'll help you." She would remark quietly, at least this way he could pass the blame to her, if they lived.

MattLauria1.jpg

William was silent as Mackenzie unleashed the verbal flurry on him. He simply sat there on the bed, eyes lowered as he absorbed the words. The thought had crossed his mind that the Council might have an ulterior motive regarding his appointment. Using him as a scapegoat for the survivors' collective wrath? That was something else. Hendrix didn't want to dismiss it, but he found himself marveling -- morbidly -- that Mack had come to a point in her life that it was her first assumption. Still he couldn't disagree with her about one thing: humans had the potential to be every bit as monstrous as the things Elijah had grown up hunting. Will had seen enough children torn to shreds by car bombs and suicide vests, not to mention innocents publicly beheaded, to understand that all too well. He had been opening his mouth to finally reply when Mackenzie added -- almost as an afterthought -- "I'll help you."

Will shut his mouth, stunned by the three simple words. He couldn't help himself, "Why? Don't get me wrong, Mack. I'm glad to hear it. I actually came to offer you the job. Officially. But... why?" he repeated, still more than a little awestruck.

dx0HE3H.jpg

Mackenzie would watch him for a few long quiet moments as she considered this herself, it was rather uncharacteristic of her, but she knew why, "Three simple reasons."  She'd say slowly, crossing her arms over her chest shifting her weight to her left, right foot tapping.  "One, as I said before, you're an idiot, and it's only a matter of time before the Council wants you to do something else that would be just as stupid and I will be there to prevent it from happening.  Two, you've patched me up twice now, and probably more that I can't remember, so at the very least preventing you from being executed when we're done is my problem now."  She was slowly shaking her head watching him. "And three, I might have a connection to someone that can help, but it will be costly, he's a business man, and he's not human."  She'd watch him, letting the information sink in.

Will watched Mackenzie impassively as she rattled off her list. She wanted to be in a position to influence the Council. That much was understandable; he tactfully chose to ignore the fact that it wasn't quite a vote of confidence for his part. The gratitude for him patching her up was misplaced, but it made sense nonetheless. His lip curled involuntarily at the last, however. "You're talking about a a Crossroads Demon," he remarked flatly -- a statement, not a question.

dx0HE3H.jpg

Mackenzie's face would twist, offended by Williams suggestion. "I don't deal with Demons, I kill them, every chance I get at any cost."  Though she couldn't fault him for believe that, it would be a feasible solution to their situation. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."  She had hoped she had more time with her secret before she had to tell them to the Council, and she certainly had not thought that William would be one to hear them, but at least she could keep it from Ashley and maybe Eli a little longer.  "A vampire, an old one.  I spent ten years in the North fighting and running from the Pack, but I wasn't alone.  Shortly after Duncan, my youngest brother, was Turned I was found by them.  Circumstances what they were we came to mutual terms.  Hunting in the North is far far more dangerous than here.  It's like the Wild West compared to modern day.  There are Monsters, everywhere, too much country to hold so you make deals with the ones that are the least problematic.  He's among them.  His Den is massive, he's kept the Pack out of his city for very long time, longer than I know.  I said might have a connection.  We did not end on good terms, and I have not spoke to him in nearly six years."

MattLauria1.jpg

William was relieved to hear that Mackenzie didn't have any demonic entanglements in mind. He wasn't much more excited about dealing with a vampire, but demons were in a class all their own as far as he was concerned. He knew it was entirely personal prejudice that made him feel that way, but he had neither forgotten or forgiven what happened overseas so quickly. As for the vampire... he found himself all but bunking with a pagan god at this point. Times weren't so simple anymore. Open-mindedness could be a double-edged sword, but it was one they'd need to embrace if they wanted to survive what was coming. Still, Mackenzie's statement that they weren't on the best of terms caused him to raise an eyebrow.

"You think he'll still help us? And for that matter, what did you have in mind?"

dx0HE3H.jpg

"That's a great question." Mackenzie would sigh and move back to sitting at the edge of the bed, crossing her legs beneath her.  "I know I can get him to at least listen, but helping us..."  She'd slowly shake her head. "We need to convince him that Vitae would be an ally to him.  Boresti was a stop-gap for the Pack, with them around the Pack more or less left him be, but after the fall it's been war between the two.  If we can convince him keeping us alive and as allies is beneficial to him..." She'd trail off, not necessary to explain the rest for the moment.  "Question is, will the Council even consider it an option?" This is where William would have to do his work, she certainly did not have any sway, and he was uncertain if he did either.

MattLauria1.jpg

Will rubbed at his brow, considering Mackenzie's proposal. "They may not be in the most open-minded of moods right now, but we at least have to try. They seem to have accepted dealing with a pagan god for the moment, so it's not a total lost cause," he remarked. "The trick will be to convince them that they won't be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. The experiences most of those Hunters out there have with vamps won't be positive. If we can get them to focus on the immediate threat..." he sighed. "It's worth a shot, anyway. Assuming we can convince him, like you said." William paused to look up at Mackenzie. "How will we find him?"

She was surprised to hear William thought he could convince the council and more so that they were tolerating Hypnos' presence.  She knew she could at least get her contact to consider the option of assisting them.

" I have a phone he gave me.  I haven't used it in years, not since I left but I keep it charged and ready."  she had always prepared for the worst and in this case it was returning North to his territory.  She would lean down to retrieve her duffle and dig through it remiving an old Motorilla KRZR Red, complete with celtic cross dongle attached.  Now she as hesitant glancing to William, "Do me a favor?" She'd ask quietly.  "Keep this between us?"

Chase had started to tunnel vision whilst he ran, his wolf form low as he sprinted through the forested area. It hadn't occurred to him that he didn't particularly know the area's layout until he zoomed by a rather rickety and abandoned old cabin that the forest had taken back with a tree practically coming through the middle of it. How long did the forest go on for? Hard to say but he had crossed a side road at one point and the wooded area had kept going. The other wolves scents were still faint, leaving Chase to assume he had plenty of time to make up.

After he'd ran who knew how many miles Chase started to slow his pace by at least half, attempting not to use up so much stamina. Chase was hoping he wouldn't be nearly caught up until night so that he'd have the cover of darkness at least. When the wind shifted in the opposite direction the wolf's pace slowed even further until he'd stopped, there was the scent of blood again...with the slightest of decay coming from behind him. Is that a vamp---?

Chase's thought process was cut off by a voice, "Well what do we have here?" A nude man in a ponytail stepped out of a tree further ahead in the direction Chase was headed. Immediately he pegged the stranger as a Werewolf, and a growl from another tree as a wolf stepped into view made Chase realize he wasn't alone. His worry for Joe and the possibility that there was a Vampire in the woods had distracted him...or possibly saved him if this was an ambush he nearly ran smack into. "You know...", the man continued looking at Chase rather curious as he moved closer along with his shifted friend, "...we were expecting a hunter or two to come romping through here after us. Not some two-bit manged wolf." The comment clearly amused himself. Chase however growled at the insult on sheer instinct at this point, taking up a defensive position and spreading his paws apart.

"Woah calm down there. Can't take a joke this guy..." Ponytail looked down at the wolf beside him with a smirk before turning to look back at Chase. "How about you both shift so we can actually speak to one another, eh?" At this, the other wolf shifted back to a large pale man who looked rather angry with his arms crossed....or maybe he just had some sort of resting bitch face. Either way Chase decided to go along with it, at this point he had little choice. Once the three were standing on two legs, he gave a flash of a smile. "Don't recognize you, which pack you with? And why in the hell are you all the way out here? We were supposed to be the scouts." It was only then that Chase realized they'd have no idea who he was. Not to mention this wasn't a single pack...but an alliance of packs.

"We uh...just arrived this morning. I was actually sent to scout the colony by my alpha. You'll have to take it up with her." Chase internally clenched at his own words as the two men before him looked at each other with raised brows before looking back at him. "By the smell that's wafting off you, you did more than just scout...you were inside their walls." Ponytail's eyes narrowed as he took another big whiff and Chase was trying to plot an escape. "And if I'm not mistaken you got near enough to the group we chased back to Vitae." Chase was an inch from shifting and making a run for it. "The girl still alive?" When Chase hesitated an answer due to not knowing if he should give up that sort of information or not, Ponytail cut him off as he opened his mouth. "What pack did you say you were from again?" At the accusing question, big boy's arms dropped to his side and Chase cursed himself for being unable to keep the charade going.

Before Chase could even react big boy was on him, quicker than one might think a man of his size could move. Chase had thrown up his arms defensively expecting to need to protect his face from an assault, instead he felt his forearms being grabbed by the other mans hands. They were like clamps, and Chase only got one failed attempt to pull himself free from the large mans grasp before he heard the growling.

Dammit. Big boy was not only distracting him, but keeping hold of his arms so Chase couldn't shift. Meanwhile Ponytail had already shifted and was moving to finish this quickly, the two worked well together. So Chase only did his partial shift, both his teeth and nails extending as he kicked as hard as he could straight to the large mans under area. No matter how big you are, getting hit there was as good a plan as any. However Big boy didn't let go much to Chase's surprise, but his grip loosened enough for Chase to shift the mans weight. So Chase surged forwards, headbutting the bald head with his own as he attempted to disorient or throw off the larger man more. This worked as the other man started to fall back with Chase pushing into him, luckily Big boy let go and fell back against the wolf. Chase was sure to get a good deep swipe on the mans abdomen in the midst of it as well.

This distraction gave Chase the time he needed to shift into his wolf form, not enough to get away though. The moment he'd finished Ponytail in his wolf form was already on him, teeth tearing into Chase's shoulder causing him to howl in pain.

----

Joe was leaning against the back of the truck still at the treeline when the faint howl reached his ears. The mans eyes going from the treeline to Vitae and back again, it was hard to say if the colony could hear it...the last thing they needed was the colony to get worked up into a panic about hearing a wolf. That thought only lasted momentarily before he reached into the backseat and pulled out a shotgun loaded with silver bullets. There he stood by the vehicle with the weapon in one hand and his phone showing Chase's in the other, willing the dot to move on his screen...to know that Chase was still on the move.

William nodded. "Of course," he replied. He didn't particularly like the idea of hiding things from Elijah and the others, but the request was reasonable. Noting Mack's hesitation, he looked her in the eye. "You don't have to do this if you don't want to. If you think there's a better way, we'll find it..."

dx0HE3H.jpg

Mackenzie would give just the slightest of smiles at Williams agreement to keep what they discussed and what was about to transpire quiet for the time being.  There would be a time and a place where she would tell Ashley about the rest; there was no point in exposing a potential venue of an argument if her connection would decline her out right.  She'd inhale and sigh, shaking her head. "We have, what, at most 30 viable Hunters?  I doubt we could take on an equal amount of wolves.  We're out powered, by far.  There is nothing better."

She'd power on the phone and press and hold the programmed speed-dial for her contact, immediately selecting speaker.  She'd set the phone down between them on the bed, no reason for William to be secluded from the second half of the conversation, she couldn't hide forever.  It would ring several times, and Mackenzie was beginning to worry that it would go unanswered when the line connected. There was a long silence then a voice spoke, deep and raspy; as though he'd just been woken up. (In French) "Bonjour? Qui est-ce? Qui a ce numero?"  Once more Mackenzie was hesitating, every part of her wanted to end the call, destroy the phone and run. She fought.

"Franklin." It wasn't a question but a statement, she knew the voice.  Once more there was a long silence before the voice whispered, "Skye."  It has been a long time since anyone has called her by her name, her real name and it made just the slightest of smiles quirk to her lips, but it was quick to disappear.  She wouldn't bother with pleasantries, never been one for conversation, "The Pack is on the move."

The voice would chuckle and sigh, "I should have known.  It's been nearly six years and you're still tracking them."  Mackenzie wouldn't respond, she hadn't realized she was that predictable, after a time the voice, Franklin, would speak. "They are.  They're targeting a small Colony in the South.  Poor souls."  At this Mackenzie's dark eyes would turn towards William, she was uncertain if Franklin knowing about the planned Pack activities were good or not.

"I know," She'd say slowly.  "I'm in the Colony." Before she was even done speaking there was an explosion of curses and expletives from the voice, in English then French transitioning to another language, something old, that Mackenzie didn't recognize, but he would come back soon after to English. "Get out.  Run now."  There was hesitation before he continued. "I can't reach that far, get across the border, I can get you home."

At this Mackenzie winced, eyes shutting tightly, it was not good news.  "You know I can't."  Franklin's voice would revert to French, rambling on before Mackenzie would interrupt, "English."  Franklin's voice would pause, before speaking again, in English, slowly.  "Who is with you?"  Once more Mackenzie would watch him, but she'd answer.  "Part of Vitae's Council."  It was the truth, "We want to talk about an alliance, a mutual agreement." She would bite her lower lip, hoping William would come up with something to say, anything that might entice Franklin away from Run and Hide.

With his goal complete Hypnos relaxed knowing that all he needed to do was wait for nightfall and he would have his answer. Waking up with a yawn the God rose from the couch and stretched out Hypnos looked around to find that the house seemed a little empty. Shaking off his own influence Hypnos noticed that there were in fact two people within the home. Hypnos stashed his artifacts in Williams room where they had been, but kept his horn on his person.

As Hypnos approached the room that Mackenzie had taken up as her own he would knock on the door frame and wait to be noticed. " Planning the colony's defense in here?" Hypnos guessed as it was pretty much the only thing everyone was worried about at the moment.

MattLauria1.jpg

William watched at the conversation progressed, trying to parse what he could of the segments that were in French. He spoke several languages proficiently, but French was not one of them. Still, he'd managed to get the gist of it. Thus far he had avoided speaking up; this was Mackenzie's show as far as he was concerned and the last thing he wanted to do was overstep any boundaries and drive away a potential asset. When Mack finally revealed his presence, Hendrix noted the anxiety in her demeanor. Franklin wasn't going for it.

"Hello, Franklin," he said. "My name is William. I'm a member of Vitae's Council," he shook his head at the introduction. It didn't feel right, even if it was technically true at this point. "Mackenzie mentioned that you might be willing to assist us with the Pack." He paused, searching for the right words, but kept his tone calm, professional, trying to exude an auditory confidence that he didn't feel. He switched gears -- Mack had mentioned he was a businessman. A realist, then. "I realize this is a lot to ask. We're willing to talk terms."

Will turned to the sound of a knock at the threshold, seeing Hypnos but not acknowledging him for the time being.

Alex's head whipped around when she heard howling. She crept closer, watching that her steps were nearly silent. When she got close enough to see, what she saw shocked her. Werewolves, if she was to go by the size of them. She picked up a rock and threw it full force at the wolf biting the one. "Hey, mutt. Come at me, bro."

Dayne shook Jim's hand

"Its nice to meet you sir, thank you for letting me stay here. Its been 4 weeks since I have gotten to properly rest.

I said at the gate I'm more than happy to do what I can here to help. I just want a place to settle down"

He said, explaining the situation to the older gentleman. He decided to keep his visions to himself for now. He did not know

why he was led here but his visions rarely went against him. Unfortunately because of the frequency of the visions, he lost sleep

and after 4 weeks he had lost some body weight as well as shaking slightly from the strain of the 4 weeks of constant travel

Jon would give Dayne an appreciative smile, hearing the youth's trouble. "Not to worry, we have a place for you to rest, until we can find a permanent place for you."  The older man was leading Dayne away from the command tent down the road slightly to a large building, once Motel now served as a boarding house, temporary housing for new civilians.  At the front desk he'd step behind and collect a key to turn over to Dayne.  "Rest here for now, mess hall serves three meals a day.  Once we get a place for you to stay, we'll talk about work.  Keep in mind you might have room mates, personal space is going quick here in Vitae."

Mackenzie's dark eyes would snap upwards hearing Hypnos's voice from the door way, she'd been so focused on the phone she'd entirely forgotten the door was still open.  She'd hiss at the god, raising a finger to her lips to hush him, god or not she was not about to let him distract Franklin from Williams train of thought.  There was silence over the phone after Williams introduction and proposal before he spoke again. "I don't do business over the phone."  At this Mackenzie would wince, shaking her head but then Franklin continued. "Given the nature of this issue, I'll come to you."  The line went dead and Mackenzie couldn't keep the shock from her face. She'd turn to William and speak quietly. "Step one, pique his interest."

Dayne nodded and headed into the motel, hoping just for a bed and possibly a vision free sleep.

Going up the stairs, he used the key to access a room, taking no notice of anything else in the room

he went across and threw himself onto the free bed. He lasted seconds before nodding off to sleep.

All that mattered was that he could stop being on the move, whatever reason for the visions leading him here

would hopefully stop for a while since he had done as asked.

He woke feeling more rested than before but still starving. Getting up and stretching with a groan, he felt a few joints pop.

He made his way towards the mess hall that had been pointed out to him earlier. He had a chance to look at himself in the mirror

and saw he was definitely more gaunt that he had been before. Clothes that once fit his frame now hung loosely.

Shaking his head, he got to the mess hall and took the plate of food with a nod and smile.

Sitting down, he dug into the food hungrily, until the plate went back clean. With a small sigh, he patted his stomach.

Getting up he now felt better than he could last recall. He made his way back outside to look for Jim and report in that he was good to go.

He really wanted to help out here, anyway that he could
