Tu'er Shen the Rabbit God
All heaven has broken loose.
It had been just an ordinary day for those in the eastern provinces of the empire. Fishermen were dragging in a fresh haul and framers were tending to their fields. Yet in the southeastern corner of the realm a battle raged on between the imperial army and the Dragon Goddess. No one wished for them to fail, but everyone feared the outcome should the imperial soldiers succeed in their mission. And they were right to. No more than an hour after her defeat, the Dragon Goddess’ absence was felt by all along the eastern coast. A powerful burst of energy from her body sent a shockwave across the land that uprooted trees, flooded valleys, destroyed fertile land, and drained rivers. Panic and fear quickly set in among the people as their homes and their lives were all destroyed in an instant. To make matters worse, the sky had changed in that there was now a whole world hovering just above the mountain tops.
The spirit world had long been hidden behind a veil, but now that it’s creator lay dead that veil no longer existed. At first the people of the western provinces were intrigued by the sudden appearance of the spirit world. They cheered and praised the emperor for his brave decision for surely nothing bad could come from this.
How wrong they were. Within several hours, spirits of all kind descended into the mortal realm and many of them were not the benevolent kind talked about in stories. Humanity was beset upon by monsters that saw them as easy prey, and many of them were. Within days entire villages were consumed, razed, or cut off from the rest of the world. Spirits and all manner of creatures began building nests and staking their claim on the souls of humanity.
While the common men suffered, the Imperial city and its adjacent provinces endured and survived, Their high walls and skilled defenders kept out all threats to the Emperor. The who despite now possessing the Dragon Goddess’ power, had yet to do anything to put an end to the chaos devouring his land.
The further one got from the imperial city, the worse off they were. Rumors of the undead had spread throughout the land, along with talk of demon armies and spirits abducting people. Many of these lands lost their Lords in the battle with the goddess or in the madness that shortly followed and now they had no leaders. As if they didn’t have enough problems already, crops were dying and the people were going hungry, causing some to resort to stealing from their own kin. Bandits are on the rise in the east, along with opportunists seeking to claim what little authority remains there.
All is not lost though. Word spreads that some minor lords still protect their lands and their people, and enclaves from the demons are rumored to have formed in the east where little hope survives. The future of the middle kingdom hangs in the balance and the fate of two worlds could be decided by the actions of a brave few. This is where our story begins.
