RWBY: The Years Before: Shadow of Grim

KURO MAYONAKA

Kuro rolled his eyes upon hearing Mel's outbreak. Honestly, he'd have the same reaction if someone interrupted his sleep with a pillow to his face, but Azure went a crueler route than that. Mel, however, would find an alarm going off @HoneyBear\-Kat @theManCalledSting

Ozpin watched in amusement from his tower. He could see the tiny figures of team LSOC down below, half an hour before call time for the bark collecting expedition. The other teams should have known about this optional activity as well, it had been on the morning announcements for the past week. But today was the first day of the semester, and there was business to attend to. So Ozpin picked up the mic on his desk and spoke into it.

"Good morning, Beacon staff and students," Ozpin read from his sheet, "Breakfast today consists of the usual options, along with a breakfast enchilada. Yum. The yum was a bit of forced enthusiasm. "Classes today for the start of the semester shall begin at their normal times, with the exception of those students involved in assisting Miss Goodwitch in the Emerald forest. We still have lots of room, and students of all years are welcome. Ozpin coughed a bit, holding the mic away from his mouth. "Excuse me. Ahem. Extra information about the history of the global wars is available afterschool, with Professor Oobleck. That's all for today folks, have a good start of the semester."

Ozpin put the mic down and went back to his window, taking a sip of his coffee. Those two transfers from Vacuo sure had his interest piqued. First and foremost, there was Curve, the Mafia crimelord. 'Law enforcer,' he corrected himself with the term Curve had refered to himself with. The boy seemed to know just as much, if not more than himself about the current crime situation in Vale. Something that someone his age shouldn't be concerned with. Ozpin understood why Shade had accepted him, to keep him off the streets, keep him from doing anything else bad towards the city of Vacuo. But in further investigation into the matter, Ozpin had discovered Curve had actually done more good than harm. His gang was full of criminals, but they seemed to cease to be... Well, criminals.

And then there was Sward. Who even was he? Ozpin didn't know, but the boy wasn't trouble like Curve was. Hopefully he'd use his potential to become a successful huntsman. Ozpin allowed himself a small smile, shook his head, then sat back down at his desk. [clolor=green] "Allright Glenda," [/color] Ozpin said, "Just a bit more time and you can head out with anyone else who shows up."

The faunus stood still watching the two. Kuro decided ot was time for a shower. He gathered his towel and other necessities and headed straight for the bathroom where the showers lined. She twiddled her fingers restlessly, not really knowing what to do now. She was already ready to go, and now she had to wait for the others. Her eyes wandered the room. She never spent much time in it, and never really got a good look around. Then she looked ag Kuro's bed beside her, sheets and blankets a mess after he sprung out of bed. She was like a bored housewife. Nothing to do but tidy up...and thats exactly what she did. Immediately, her hands went to work, and started straightening the fabric, then tucking them so they stay neat. When she finished she looked at Mel's bed,"I am not a...what do you call them...a maid? Yes. But i suppose just for today i could be." She looked at Mel,"Do you want me to fix your bed as well?" She asked but Azure didnt wait for an answer. She had already began straightening the blankets by the time she finished asking. While she made the bed, Ozpin made a PA. At the mention of Emerald Forest, the fox's right ear twitched. She froze in place, thinking for a moment. 'Emerald forest....that was....thats was on-'

"THE SCROLL!" she exclaimed. Her memory was jogged. The faunus remembered seeing the announcement on her scroll the previous morning. Their team is supposed to be on a short term mission for Goodwitch. It was a good thing Ozpin went through the schedule formthe day, or she wouldve forgotten completely. She gasped in a panic,"G-get ready! You must be quick! We are supposed to be at the forest at this time! We are not very punctual! Does not reflect good for this team, oh no no." She ran to the door, opened it then stopped,"I will tell the Alpha! But i will not come back!" She closed the door behind her and ran a few steps down the hallway,"Oh wait!" She ran back and popped her head into the room,"I will see you at the forest! Dontbelate!"

She ran down the hall way into the shared bathrooms. The steam signaled that Kuro had already begun his shower. "Alpha!--whoah," she called out before slipping slightly on water from someone who mustve showered before, but quickly caught herself. Even though each shower was covered, Azure could help but cover her eyes anyway,"I do not wish to disturb you, but we are supposed to be at the Emerald Forest. So please make haste and make your way. I will meet you there. I am leaving now!" She wasted no time, and waited for no reply. Azure ran down the hallway, tightening her belt that holstered her weapons.

She ran out of the dorms and through Beacon, then to the edge of the forest. The poor girl was already panting heavily. At least she was quick. Dodging trees, jumping over shrubs, she made her way as quickly as possible. The further she went, familiar scents grew stronger. She recognized them as Curve and the others. Now she had an idea of where she was going.

After some time she finally caught up. She slowed to a stop and put her hands on her knees, bent over and trying to control her breathing.

"What I see? I see a forrest that goes on for miles right next to our school which is filled with dangers and horrors that can be scaled on multiple levels of bad shit crazy stuff, and there sending 3 groups of kids to walk into it to collect materials. Yay I see this as a pretty cool place to test our might. Who knows maybe I can show you my "leader" skills out here in the field." Locke said this with a huff of confidence.

Curve glared at Locke. The nerve. "You've got one thing right." Curve glowered, the tattoos on the side of his face glowing, "It's dangerous. On everything else, you're horribly wrong." Curve pointed his finger at the kids chest, speaking through gritted teeth. "You're not supposed to have fun. You're supposed to work. And you're supposed to learn. As for your leader skills, I doubt you have any. But now I'm going to hold you to it. One of us gets hurt, it's on your head buddy." Out of the corner of his eye, Curve saw Azure and Mel approach out of the corner of his eye. They still had five minutes till go time, but it was good someone had the same idea as him. Curve stopped repremanding Locke, and stood up straight, adjusting his suit. With a disinterested grunt, he jerked his chin at the faunice girl and her partner, turning around again. Curve scooped a rock off the ground and threw it at the tree sward was in, folding his arms across his chest.

OJ was glad he hadn't answered Curves question. This guy meant serious shit. Sure, he took everything too seriously, but he did have a point here. And his accusing words towards Locke had a ring of truth with them. Their team had split once. Would it do so again?

Azure Snow

The tiny faunus caught hee breath and stood up straight, hearing Mel show up after her. Curve had just finished yelling about who knows what to Locke before jerking his chin at herself and Mel. Azure's head tilted at the gesture, was that supposed to be a hello? She pouted and frowned at the large male. His anger and inability to hold his tongue got to Azure, even if he wasnt on her team. You shouldnt talk to anyone like that on your team. She lined up next to the giant, still wearing her scowel next to him. Her arms crossed and she glanced at him, then looked back at the forest before her.

Where was Kuro? The fox turned back for a short time, staring at Beacon behind her, hoping her leader would emerge, and maybe their fourth member, whos disappeared since the day before. This was a team effort. Where were they?

Mel caught up to Azure, panting heavily from exhaustion, "You're faster than you look, dear..." she said. she held her hand up to Azure indicating to her she needed some time to regain her composure. "So... besides the other half of our team... what did I miss?" she asked her teammate while ignoring that fact that she may have woken up the other students with her frantic screaming.

KURO MAYONAKA

While enjoying a warm shower, Kuro heard the door open and the frantic placement of feet running on the ground. Then it sounded like that someone slip on the water. Sounds like someone's gonna be late for class. He smiled to himself while rinsing off the last bit of soap before turning the water off. Then he heard Azure speak, panicked and saying something about the Emerald Forest. Oh crap! They were supposed to meet in the Emerald Forest with Locke's team and another team! How did he forget when it had been on the morning announcements yesterday? He knew Mel was in here too, as she had entered not too long ago, and guessed that she would be following Azure out.

Before he could even thank Azure for reminding him, she left the bathroom in a hurry. He started to dry off as quickly as humanly possible. Even though his team was late a lot, he knew that making Goodwitch angry was a very poor decision that could shorten his life. After drying off, he changed into his outfit for the day, a new jacket on to replace the one he gave to Azure, and ran out of the bathroom and down the hallway to their room. Entering, he saw that everyone's beds were made. Azure's work no doubt, so that's two things he had to thank her for. He threw his dirty clothes and towel under his bunk and grabbed the custom weapon holster off of his bed and sprinted back out the door, working the clips as he ran.

By the time he exited the dorm building and started running towards the forest, the holster with both weapons in it was attached and he was pumping his arms to run as fast as he could. Guess this would be part of his cardio workout for today. He hit the cliff where he was launched off for initiation, which he still remebered and hated. He clotheslined himself on a tree branch at the end of his landing, which hurt like hell. Now that he was at the cliff, he wondered where to go now. He caught a glimpse of a blue and white shape running through the forest and knew that it was Azure. He took a running start and then hit the declining slope that led down into the forest. He was coming down almost too fast, and unholstered Taiyo, the shotgun he held in his left hand, and extended the blade on the end. He stabbed it into the rock and used it to slow his fall. When he was close enough to the bottom, he noticed Azure panting heavily with her hands on her knees. Found everyone else, too. He removed the weapon and kicked off the hill, landing into a front roll and coming up from it near everyone else. He holstered the weapon and casually walked to the group, also panting.

"So.....that was a nice warmup...eh?" Kuro tried to sarcastically say as he was still panting for air.

The faunus looked to her side at Mel and shrugged shaking her head, giving her a "beats me" look. She had just gotten there too, she had no idea what information she couldve missed. Not far behind, Kuro's aura was nearing the rest of the group, and fast. At least he hurried. Kuro caught up at last just as tired as she was when she showed up,"So...that was a nice warm up...eh?" he tried lightening the mood with a little sarcasm. Azure looked at her two team mates then facepalmed, a late team, thats never good. Not a single person was punctual. She started to lose faith in them but not her hope.

The faunus bent to the side slightly to look past Kuro, hoping their last member would join them. She blinked, her mouth forming a small "o" and her hand covered her eyes from the sun while she waited. But no luck. Azure turned on her heels, facing the forest again, and crossed her arms in a disappointed fashion. Her thoughts moved to the forest and so did her gaze. Standing on the cliff side all she saw were the tops of trees. But she knew under the dense canopy there were grimm waiting. Her eyebrows pinched together with determination. Killing grimm was something Azure had to get used to. Killing a living creature wasnt something she liked to do, but ahe knew it had to be done, for the safety of herself and others. The faunus took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Fox ears stood perked but they drowned everything out. At that moment, Azure was amplifying her semblance (not activating cause it cant really be turned off). Her senses became even more sensitive. She could feel the auras of those that surround her. Mel's, Kuro's, Goodwitch and Curve and Locke, OJ. The proximity at which she could sense these things extended far. There was another aura she picked up, "Green Knight?" she whispered to herself. She looked past him in her mind's eye. Grimm did not emit aura, they dont have one, but the Grimm do expel strong concentrations of negative energy. It would make sense really. Since that is what attracts them. Her semblance helped in two ways, locating auras (or other people) and pinpointing negative energy (or Grimm). A brief memory of a student crossed her mind. This particular student was able to supress his aura, he was the only one that couldnt be tracked by the faunus. She was blind when it came to him. She shook the thought, once again feeling the faint (at least from her distance) sources of negativity down below. The Grimm were there. However decreasing the Grimm population was not their objective. They were there to help Goodwitch...

Glenda Goodwitch came into being behind a tree with an audible *pop*. Teleporting wasn't something she liked to do, but it was efficient. Stepping out from behind the tree, she smiled when she saw the students who had decided to show up. Her grin faded however, when Curve spoke.

"Sixteen seconds late goodwitch." He stated bluntly, looking up from his watch. He spread his feet apart slightly and placed his hands behind his back in the 'parade rest' stance. Glenda went to say something, but the team Sward had taken on singlehandedly came into view at the time. "They're even later. You should pride yourself in being the better of the two squads when it comes to punctuality." Curve rolled his eyes and relaxed his stiff posture slightly. It wasn't quite a compliment, but with this woman, it was about as good as he could get.

OJ spoke up to make sure Curve didn't get into an argument with the teacher. "Ey, uhh, where them trees at? We lookin for bark, right?" Glenda turned her attention to OJ as fast as possible, glad to have a less abrasive person to talk to. "Why yes, Oronco," she replied, "We are looking for munic bark. Do you know what we use that for?" OJ shrugged, but then a look of realization came to his eyes. "Oh, that what we use to make bins. Like, dust bins." "Very good. Munic bark is used to line the containers that dust is primarily transported in. It is an excellent insilation from magic, impact, water proof, fire proof, the elements, pretty much anything. Selling the substance is one of the ways Beacon Academy makes some extra money. Curve yawned into the back of his hand. "Enough intel, how about some identification." This warrented a glare from Goodwitch. "Curve, I was just getting to that. You would learn more if you kept your mouth shut and your ears open." Curve simply held her icy gaze with his dark brown one, disinterested with a look on his face that said 'Get to the point.' Glenda continued. "Munic trees are identified easily by the rough corrugated surface of the bark. It looks like cardboard made with dirt, to say the least. Only strip about three square feet of bark off one tree, or else it could sustain long term damage, and not grow any more. Collect it, and bring it back here. I will be in this clearing if you need help, and if danger arises, just shout. But i'm sure you can handle yourselves." With that, the students were dismissed to do their assighnment.

Silas stood at the top, waiting for at least one of her team mates to come on out. "Where are they? I wanna get some training in." She muttered as she sighed in defeat, and stroked the handle on her Switch Axe. "Conqueress..... you are one weapon a girl can ask for." she said, as if the weapon were actually alive. @Metaphysics @Trundle

Ivory slowly sneaked up to Silas with a bread knife in hand. "Boo!" She screamed as she popped her face next to hers and tapped her lightly with the flat side of her bread knife. She giggled for a few moments before moving next to Silas. "Good morning!" She chirped out cheerily as she placed the remains of her breakfast on the floor. @Emperor Of Embers

Finally catching his breath, Kuro straightened himself out just in time for Goodwitch to pop out of nowhere. Good thing, too, since she already appeared to be pissy as soon as she saw Curve. He assumed Curve had previously said or done something with his charming personality to get on her bad side. She outlined what the munic bark was, even though most of them already knew, and what it was used for. She then told them to go off and start collecting, so he turned to his team.

"Alright gals," he said clapping and rubbing his hands together, "let's get cracking."

Silas jumped at Ivory putting a knife to her face, then backed up as she placed the rest of her breakfast on the ground, feeling weirded out. "Good morning to you too, Ivory." she replied skittishly.

Morganite soon came to the other girls, really he felt they were forgetting something but he couldn't recall what. Well it couldn't be that important if he forgot about it or it might have been something that seemed far to annoying for him to remember. In the end if they forgot they would be told in time what was the worst that could happen things were rarely life and death around here.

" Anythign good to eat today?" morganite asked with a yawn as he approached.

" ehh well whatever weren't we supposed to go somewhere today ?" Morganite asked not exactly sounding interested in goign somewhere, but he no longer sounded tired. He often put on little acts like being overly tired or overly happy , just as a way of getting along or just because the whim hit him, mostly the latter.

Adam the pogo bandit

Adam was rather hungry for grits, not sure why but grits was always the natural choice to pick in the morning. It wasn't great but it always satisfied him, all buttery and hot to wake him up fully. As he was venturing to the mess hall while riding a pink pogo stick and wearing swirly orange mask with only one hole, and I do not joke that he is riding a pink pogo because why not ride a pogo stick. Everyone of course was staring at him and he of course did not mind, luckily there weren't many people in line so he got off his pogo stick and tossed it aside and got his breakfast. After that he walked to a table with several people nearby , sat down, and then he lifted his mask high enough so that only his mouth was shown. Takes a bite anddddd......"THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING GRITS I'VE EVER TASTED!!!!" As he poses with the bowl of grits up and raises it up in the air as if he were offering to the gods. He then sits down and slowly enjoys the food. "hmmmmm Bacon and egg wraps first? Or Grits with biscut?" He raises his head and points to a nearby girl, "FAIR LADY WHICH IS BESSSSTT, GRITS OR BACON?!"

He then takes a big gulp water and reaches out a hand to the mystery girl. "My name is Adam, and who might be the food genius I am speaking to?

Curve snorted at the exchange between Goodwitch and OJ. It was good to know he wasn't completely incompitent though. Which Curve didn't assume he was, but hey, now he knew. Stalking off into the woods, he jerked his head at Sward to follow. OJ did as well, and Curve could only hope that Locke had some reason not to.

After a short walk, Curve noted a tree that looked different than the others. CUrve did not recognize this tree, but it matched the description goodwitch gave. With as much metallic noise as possible, Curve's blade shot out and he began stripping the bark off of the tree. He was about halfway done when one of the guys from the team Sward beat up came over and grabbed a handful of bark off the pile Curve had accumulated. Immediately, he recieved a viscious backhand from Curve, dropping the bark and sprawling on his back. "It isn't wise to come into my safety circle." He warned, "I have a sharp object. I might accidentially cut you." His remark was delivered with so much calmness, but the statement had underlying venom. The boy got up, dusting himself off. He went to pick the bark he had dropped up, but Curve siezed him by the collar and hoisted him in the air. "I hit alot harder than my partner does," He hissed through gritted teeth.

At that moment, Glynda chose to show herself. "Curve! Put my student down!" Curve one look at Glynda and promply dropped the boy flat on his ass. He said nothing in responce, but folded his arms, gesturing to the bark he'd collected with a slight nod. "Thank you Curve, now please, find some more." Curve shrugged and made his way back to where Locke and OJ were.

He then takes another bite off his sandwich and then pulling out his tied up sack. he unties it and reaches down to pull out a magazine drum, a rusty axe, rubber chicken, sickle, some yarn, and finally pulling out a hand book with a pen attached to it. He opens it and begins to write down several things, and looking back at Silas and Asher. Azure Snow

Goodwitch gave a quick debriefing about the objective at hand. The group of students are to retrieving a certain bark from a tree. Azure raised an eyebrow, was that the reason she rushed? To make Goodwitch's job easier? Well in any case, a job is a job and the team was signed up for it. Blue and silver eyes looked at her team,'Good time for the team bonding,' the looked at Locke's team beside her,'They could use some of the team bonding as well,' she thought.

"Lets get cracking," Kuro encouraged. Azure turned, her long locks moving with her. She bounced with excitement and nodded her head with a smile,"Let us," she agreed. There was no time to lose. A playful smirked danced across her face,"I will gather more of the required substance than you two!" she giggled and took off.

"Rough surface, identical to cardboard. Rough surface....cardboard..." she repeated quietly to herself,"Bark always looks like carboard..."
