The Debutante Ball
03D006D5-0C44-4E9B-9426-7024388FC42B.gif

Debutante balls are an outdated tradition when it comes to our modern world. Girls used to dress up, show their proper etiquette, and pretend to be bashful for any future husbands that may take interest in them… Well in Rosemary Beach the tradition continues. With the amount of rich families that reside in the town, what better way is there to show that their daughters are available? Their moms go crazy preparing their daughters to debut their availability to the other families. The daughters on the other hand see the debutante ball as a way to get drinks and be flirty, or to show off their status and riches.
Everyone at Rosemary Beach wants to go to this event… Besides the people working it. With easy tips and only mild annoyance to the rich snobs, the ball holds a big dollar sign over it for the working class.
Be there or be square.

ELOISE EVERMORE
As she stood in the mirror, Eloise was regretting saying yes to this ball. It was the exact day that she had met him, the day she had finally opened herself up to someone, gave her heart to someone, and he took that heart away while he drove away on that damned bike. A lot has changed in a year for her. The first few weeks without him, she had been like a zombie. A shell of the self that people had grown to love. Eloise lost a piece of herself that day, and since then, she has not been the same. This day, for example, she had actually said yes to going to the ball with someone. He was just one of the regulars- a young golfer who was on the greens almost every day, buying drinks with daddy's money. Eloise never would have said yes before, she would have laughed in this mans face and never spoken to him again. Maybe it was an attempt to completely free herself from Ryan, maybe it was because she was genuinely interested... She had no idea, but she had said yes to dressing up for this stupid ball. The stupid ball that usually paid and tipped well enough to get her through two months of rent.

With Blu living with her though, Eloise had been able to loosen up a bit. Free herself a little bit, from the life that consisted of working for her own money and her mothers money. Because here she was, standing in front of the mirror in her room, dressed in an expensive gown that this Golfer had paid for, about to go to a ball that she always thought was ridiculous. If she hadn't been so focused on not completely breaking down, maybe she'd be more excited to go. The Golfer was handsome, charming, and from the few times she had served him at work, he had made her laugh. But not in the way Ryan had. The Golfer her to try, really really try, to get Eloise to laugh. But it had been effortless to Ryan. And as that thought popped into her head, she couldn't help but look at the jacket that hung on the back of her door. The one that had been absently forgotten in his rush out the door. She'd worn it for week after the dog in her brain had lifted, and worn it until the smell of him no longer lingered. Yes, the pair had only known each other for a few months, but Eloise had never loved someone so deeply. She was used to people leaving her that when they did it never came as a surprise, but Ryan had broken that last little touch of trust for people that she had left.

The buzz of her phone broke Eloise out of her thoughts. It was probably the Golfer here to pick her up. What was his name? Ian? Alexander? Her phone gave no hint as to what his name was, as she had labelled him in her phone as "Golfer". If she had been smart, she would have put his name in. But these days, Eloise couldn't care for people's feelings enough to avoid hurting them. If he knew she didn't know his name, and maybe got hurt by that fact, then oh well. It's not like the tickets to the ball were refundable. They were for charity after all. The faint sound of a horn outside was a definite indicator that the Golfer was here, and it took everything in Eloise to grab her purse off her bed and make her way to her bedroom door. But, she paused for a moment, taking the sleeve of his jacket between her fingers. After tonight, she would throw away the jacket, she would move on tonight. And who knows, maybe this Golfer dude would be the one to help her with that? Though that was a long shot, he was rich and had a normal family. She was not, and he probably only asked her to the ball to get into her pants.

The car horn sounded again and Eloise left the house. He seemed happy to see her, and she knew he was admiring her in the dress, but his gaze felt more like a laser beam burning her skin than a look of adoration. She got into the sleek, black car anyway, "hey." Was her only greeting before they began their drive to the country club. The place was already booming with girls her age, girls younger, it wasn't normal to be asked as a date to this thing. Normally you would have to run as a debutante, but this man spent the excessive money to bring her here, dress her up, and do his best to woo her. She was only here for the alcohol, and if she got lucky at the end of the night, then she'd try her best to enjoy that too... Even if there was only one person on her body count. Eloise watched as the Golfer got out, jogged around to her side, and opened the door for her. She had to force the smile of appreciation to convince him that she was happy to be here. If he hadn't asked her to come, she'd either be at home eating a tub of ice cream, or working here to make some extra tips for her savings. Either sounded more appealing than the sequins of this dress.

"Over here, there'll be more champagne." He told her, as if she hadn't worked a dozen of these already. She knew where the champagne was, how many hors-d'œuvre's would be walked around the ballroom, and what the path of the servers was. But that was the difference between Eloise and this Golfer, he didn't have to pay attention to the things that would get him what he wants. But, she looped her arm through his, pretended she didn't belong with the help, and followed him to a server holding a tray of champagne flutes. She greatly accepted the drink and did her best not to down the whole glass. Every year, this even felt claustrophobic but at least she had a drive for that money that people would shove into her pockets. This year, it felt like there was no reward to push past the stuffiness of the room for. Why did she agree to come? Why did she put on this itchy dress and do her hair and do her makeup? The desperate attempt was to get him out of her mind for good. That was why.

"Do you want to dance?" Asked the Golfer, a hopeful look in his eyes. Eloise just nodded simply, finishing the glass of alcohol to hand off to one of her coworkers, before she followed him to the middle of the room where everyone else was dancing. The way he slipped his arm around her waist was almost tender, but the way his hands grazed the top of her butt showed for what he was truly hoping for. She just ignored that graze and placed one hand on his shoulder, while the other rested on his arm. She did her best to ignore the fighting in her head, how everything was telling her just how wrong this was. Telling her to run. She did her best to ignore her instinct, until the song was over, "I'm going to step out for some air, go mingle with your friends." She told him. He looked worried, but she gave him that fake smile again and his shoulders seemed to relax before he let her go and wandered into the crowed.

With his grip released from her waist, Eloise turned the opposite direction and made a beeline for the main entrance. It felt like the air in the room was choking her, hoping to bring her pain. Until that fresh, night air hit her lungs and she was able to finally breathe again. Quickly, she made her way down the steps that led to the front entrance, and took a seat at the very bottom one. With her face buried in her hands, those thoughts kept screaming at her. How pathetic was she? Pining over a man who left her, proved to her that he didn't love her, showed to her that he only used her for a place to stay. He claimed he was dangerous, but the only thing that opened Eloise's eyes to that fact, was that he was so easily able to rip out her heart and run... and never look back.

probably the single most outdated thing in this whole entire town: the debutante ball. if things hadn't ended the way they had with her father, he'd probably find this a perfect opportunity to get ruby married off to someone. however, that was not the case. her mother, too, found the whole thing a little outdated, but, in order to help get her daughter out there a little more, she encouraged her to go.

that's how she found herself roped up in a conversation she wasn't really interested in. this man was extremely pleased to see her, but she was, in no way, pleased to see him - it was definitely a one-sided interest. unfortunately for her, there was really only one escape: disappearing in the crowd of people. so, she grabbed her clutch and moved a strand of hair from her face, looking back at the stranger who had a smile on his face, probably hopeful for more time with her. how unfortunate.

" i'm going to go get a drink. "
she spoke, her voice quiet yet audible against the music and people talking all around them. the male opened his mouth, but she shook her head.
" no, uh, i'll go get it myself. "
she sent him a small smile and turned on her heels, walking in the direction of the bar. turning her head to look back in the direction she had just come from, she sighed, before looking back in front of her. ruby didn't consider herself one for alcohol, but if she wanted to make it through sixty minutes of this entire thing, she might need a little bit of it in her system.
" wow, the bar's hella crowded... "
she muttered, raising an eyebrow. that's when she accidentally hit someone's arm in lowering her clutch back to her side. she turned her head, sending them a small, apologetic smile.
"uh... sorry about that. there's a lot going on. "

she wasn't wrong. there's probably be a lot going on for rest of the night.

ryan murphy.
"Hey, El."
“Are you in or out, James?”

“Yeah, hurry the fuck up, kid, we don’t got all night.”

Ryan, who had been elsewhere in his mind, choked back the urge to cough at the thick blanket of cigarette smoke in the air. Glancing down at the cards in his hand, his face remained steady and unmoving. Bad cards, of course, but that wasn’t anything that he couldn’t fix.

“I’m in,” Ryan noted with a nod, “I’m all in.”

Ryan pushed all of his cash to the centre of the table before taking a swig of whatever liquor was in the bottom of his solo cup. It was tart, bitter, and quite frankly, it tasted how piss smells. Still, it kept him numb enough to feel nothing and sharp enough to slowly release a few cards from his sleeves undetected.

The four other men at the table took their turns displaying their cards, some proud of their accomplishments while others frown in lost dollars. Ryan spread his cards out carefully on the table and leaned back.

“Royal flush,” he laughed, “and I think I’m done beating you old geezers up. I’ll take my payout and go.”

One of the biggest guys at the table, a scruffy biker named Little (yes, terribly ironic), growled behind a cigar. “Ain’t no fuckin’ way you had that shit again.”

Ryan shrugged, swallowing the last of his drink and throwing on his most charming smile. “What can I say? I’m a fuckin’ pro.”

Little burst up from the table, lunging across to grab the collar of Ryan’s shirt. He began to shake him aggressively, demanding to know what happened, when his jacket began to slip. A few cards tumbled out onto the table from Ryan’s sleeve, causing Little to pause his assault.

“You sneaky little ba-“

“Bye!”

Ryan scooped up as much money as his arms could carry and shoved it into his pockets and down his shirt before smacking away Little’s hands. Now free, though the other men immediately rose to catch him, Ryan burst out the door. He ran and ran despite how many people were on his tail until the sounds of them screaming for him to come back fell into little more than echoes between brick walls.

“Fuck you, James!” Little screamed somewhere in the distance. “You’re a fuckin’ scumbag, just like your father! You ever show your face here again and I'll fuckin' kill ya!”

Ryan faltered, only for a moment, as the sting of the man's words settled in his chest. He was wrong, of course, Ryan wasn't anything like his father. He wasn't a drunk, a cheat, an abuser. No, Ryan wasn't a great guy, but he certainly wasn't as bad as his father.

Wasn't he?

Swallowing his own pride, Ryan took a quick inventory of how much he'd stolen off the old geezers and flipped open his worn leather wallet to shove the bills within. As he moved the wallet, a small picture fell from its spot tucked in behind his drivers license and to the rain soaked concrete underfoot. Ryan scrambled to pick it up as the edges of the photograph began to curl with exposure to the puddle. He let out a curse as he wiped the photograph off, ignoring the familiar pang of loss in his chest.

He should've gotten rid of that picture as soon as he left Rosemary Beach, as soon as he made the decision that stormy night to leave the one good thing that had ever really happened in his life behind him out of fear. Ryan didn't have any claim to the woman in the photograph, not her dazzling smile or halo of dark hair or the crinkle of her nose or the way she looked like the most goddamn beautiful girl in the world. No, he forfeited his right to her, to the life he could have made with her, yet he couldn't get rid of that picture. Even when he left Rosemary Beach, the wounds around his heart still gaping and bleeding, Ryan couldn't bring himself to cut off that one final tie with Eloise Evermore. To be honest, he wasn't sure he ever really could. Instead, he kept that small piece of her tucked behind his driver's license, hidden from view but close to him at all times. Perhaps it was sick of him to keep torturing himself like this, or maybe he felt he deserved that pain. Either way, he returned the now water damaged photo to his wallet, along with the cash, and made his way towards his motorcycle.

Since leaving Rosemary Beach, Ryan had returned to his drifter ways. He made temporary friends and crashed on their couches, made beds under overpasses, bribed and bartered his way to safety when it got cold or stormy. He'd grown out his hair a bit before cutting it real short and letting it grow again, he covered both of his arms with sleeves of patchwork tattoos. The changes in his appearance, although subtle, made Ryan feel safer, gave him some control over how he was perceived. Besides, clearly something had been working, after the incident in Rosemary Beach the year prior, his dad had never been able to find him.

As Ryan neared the motel room that he was staying in, his phone began to buzz wildly in his pocket. Furrowing his brow, Ryan pulled into a parking spot and freed his phone from his pocket, hovering his hand over the screen to keep it from getting wet from the rain. Unknown Caller? That was odd. Ryan pressed his finger into the hang up button and turned his bike off, making his way to his room.

Just as soon as Ryan was inside, shivering from the cold rain that seemed to chill him right down to his bones, his phone rang again. Unknown Caller again? Ryan huffed and picked up the phone.

"I don't fuckin' want any, leave me alone.," he huffed. Ryan lowered the phone to hang up when the voice on the other side of the call spoke. Her voice was soft, sweet, but aged with time and crackled with one too many cigarettes. It was a voice he'd recognize anywhere.

"Ryan?"

His blood turned to ice in his veins.

"Mom?"

"It's him, sweetheart," she said softly, "he's gone.."

ıllıllııllıllı

Ryan refused to attend the funeral. What was the point in going? He wasn't about to celebrate the life of the man that had brought him so much pain, nor would he subject himself to the rage he'd feel if he showed up and didn't burn the fucker's body where he laid in his casket. The eulogy said it all, Ryan's father was finally dead, and somehow that had spurred his mother to call him and try to rekindle their relationship. Not a chance, Ryan thought, she had abandoned him with their abuser, left him as a young child to run off and do who knows what! She didn't deserve another chance and Ryan made sure that she knew that.

They buried his father on a Tuesday morning. The funeral was somewhat nice, Ryan heard through the grapevine of extended family that were trying to convince him to forgive his father. He ignored them all and by that evening, he was on the road again.

Ryan drove. He wasn't sure where he was driving to, or why he was driving at all, but he drove. Running felt normal, felt like the only thing that made sense anymore, so he leaned into the feeling and just drove and drove until he realized that he was truly on autopilot as the sign for Rosemary Beach passed him by.

There was a sort of sick sense of deja vu about the whole thing. This was almost exactly how he'd arrived here the first time: distraught, on a busted up motorcycle with a bloody lip and a black eye from getting into a fight at a gas station a few miles back. He couldn't tell why he was here again, why his body screamed for him to come back, yet there he was, parking his motorcycle on the edge of the parking lot and hopping a tall fence to sneak into the ball.

He wanted to see some of his friends. Yes, that was the excuse, he had friends here. Cole, for starters, he'd learned some interesting information about recently and wanted to catch up with him. His mom had let something odd slip about a guy sharing a name similar to that of Cole's father. Ryan was curious about the similarities, that was all, that was the only reason he was back. He had loose ends to tie up.

And yet, like he was reliving a memory, there she was sat on the steps outside the building, only this time, she looked different. A bit older perhaps, but in a way that made her that much more beautiful. She was wearing a dress darker than a shadow and glistening like the night sky.

Ryan should've turned around. She didn't need this garbage from him, she deserved to be happy with her life and not dragged down by his lowlife bullshit. For a moment all he could do was stare until he finally willed himself to speak.

"Hey, El," Ryan laughed sadly, "long time, no see."

"Make it a double"
The instructions had been clean cut: get over the whole divorce thing, clear her head, get ready to release new music, and take a goddamn chill pill. Instructions, of course, were never easy for Cadence Adams to get along with, and so as soon as her plane touched down in Rosemary Beach, every rule and guideline that she'd been given went directly out the window. She was going to take advantage of her time off and away from the spotlight but not in the way her manager wanted her to. No, she was going to drink and smoke and fuck randoms and have a goddamn good time. That's what she really needed, not some spa retreat on a beach.

That was precisely why when Cade heard about some stupid rich bitch ball, she signed herself the fuck up. What better place to find some poor sad guy in need of some comfort than a ball literally designed to make single people feel bad. A good hunting ground for some fun, Cade decided, so she found herself a dress she wore to a press event a few years back tucked away in a banged up cardboard box, dolled herself up, and off she went.

Upon arrival, Cade immediately swerved anyone trying to talk to her and made her way to the bar. She couldn't cope with all this stupid stuffy bullshit without some alcohol in her system. The rich were fucking insufferable.

Two shots of tequila later and a rum and coke in hand, Cade situated herself at the end of the bar and began to watch the crowd. To think that some of these people took this whole 'sell young women off to the highest bidder' thing seriously was honestly kind of sickening. They really had no idea what they were getting into, jumping in with some random guy in hopes that maybe his red flags could tint their glasses so rose that he'd be tolerable enough to fall in love with. What sort of life would they live with people like that, willing to trade them off like cattle?

Cade took a swig of her drink, questioning why the hell she even showed up in the first place. She would've been much better off going to a bar or some shit, there was too much polish and glitz here. It was making her feel fucking sick.

Then, as if hearing her thoughts, someone at the opposite end of the bar stirred. Attractive enough, Cade supposed, and failing miserably a few times at hitting on people. It was a sad, yet deeply entertaining, thing to watch. She had to applaud his efforts and his ability to hop right back in the saddle when he inevitably got rejected. Downing her drink and placing the glass on the bar top, Cade strode over to the guy, tracing her finger along the tops of his shoulders and over the back of his neck as she sat herself down on the other side of him.

"Another round for my friend here," Cade purred to the bartender, "and another rum and coke for me, make it a double."

Cade turned to the man beside her and smiled, her ruby lips parting in a cat-like grin.

"So, you're coming home with me later, right?"

EMILY CHARTER
"I'm sorry honey, but I think it's time me and your father get a divorce..."

That wasn't how Emily had expected to start her day. And of course it was a little ridiculous for her to be upset over it. She was a grown woman, with a child of her own... But that thought of her parents putting up their happy act for so long, despite her father's cheating, was all for the kids. Emily and Daniel. It was nice to have an inkling of a normal childhood. It was more than what most people in town got. But, Emily hated that her mother was miserable for so long. Putting up with affair after affair. Emily of course knew what her dad was up to. When she was at school, the students would always make fun of her, how she had similarities to Eloise Evermore. They would say mean things like, "Of course your dad fucked the scum in town." Selma Evermore didn't have the best reputation in town... Emily knew that, and it always confused her why her dad could have another child with her. But, Emily's mom still put on that smile, the 'I have a perfect family' smile.

But now her mom wouldn't have to put on that smile anymore. Not for anyone. Instead, it was Emily who had adopted it. Which, also didn't make sense. Owen wasn't her boyfriend or husband... He was just simply the father of her child. They could have been more, once upon a time. But she'd found out about Cora after he had brutally dumped her at a public event, then rejected Cora, but then he started therapy and became good... It took a long time for him to prove that to Emily. At first they had gone slow with spending time together. He would go to appointments with her, the baby shower and gender reveal. But after that, she knew for sure he still had her heart. Which is why she officially broke it off with Cain, the person who had brought her out of her shell. Cain had deserved better than a woman who was still in love with the man who ruined her.

Maybe it was selfish of Emily to not want a fucked up family of her own. But, Owen gave no inkling that he still loved her - apart from that one kiss they shared the night of the storm. He was a good dad though, spending nights over to help with Cora. And she could tell that the little girl would grow to be attached at his hip. He was the only one who could get her to stop crying once she was fed, swaddled, and rocked. But him proving just how good he was, only made Emily fall harder. She ached for that love to be shared with her. To hold her when she was sad, and tell her it was them against the world. No, that would never happen again though. He was too devoted to Cora and the idea of giving the little girl a normal childhood.

Which is why the news of her parents divorce upset her. Even now as she held back tears while she made the bed for Owen to spend another night while he was in the living room talking away to Cora. She envied that her parents had tried, all because of Emily and Daniel. Even if it didn't end well. Could her and Owen just try? Or would that ruin all progress that they had made? She refused to say anything, for fear that would ruin even being close with him anymore. She didn't want him to snap again, and walk out on her and Cora. Because having him there, even if it was just for Cora, was better than not having him at all.

So, when she finished making the bed, she walked to her room to let the tears out for a moment. Just for a moment. To free that longing she had for him, and close that door on herself yet again. And if he asked? If her eyes were swollen? She'd just tell him that her parents were divorcing finally, and hope that he didn't remember all those time she'd wished for them to. When the tears finally stopped, she checked herself in the mirror for a second, before she walked to the kitchen. He'd surely be hungry by now. So she'd begin their regular routine. Make dinner, eat together, then watch him cuddle Cora while they put on a movie or something until it was time for her to go to bed. Because this was their version of normal. Even if it didn't end with her in his arms at the end of the night.

ELOISE EVERMORE
"Hey El."

The voice, it was like someone poured a cold bucket of ice water down her back. For months she had nightmares of his bike driving away, his words ringing around in her head "Just forget about this, about me, about us, okay? Trust me, it's easier that way." Those words were the last thing he said to her. Forget about him. Forget them. She knew when he said them, that she never would be able to. Not with him owning that piece of her soul that she had given to him. Loving him had practically been making a deal with the devil. And she'd grown to resent those words. They haunted her for a long time. And they only stopped when she began to work again, finally take her mind off of the dread that life had given her.

Straightening her spine, her eyes raked over Ryan. Was this a dream? A nightmare? Was she actually at the ball or was she asleep in her bed at home. Because how, after a year of nothing from him, was he standing in front of her on the exact day they met the year prior? His nervous laughter broke her out of her thoughts, was he actually making a joke? "I wish I never met you." She said quietly, repeating the words he had said to her last year. She held on to them, she let them break her. And now he was here to hurt her even more. Standing, she leaned her hip against the railing with she crossed her arms and levelled a cold glare on him, "what are you doing here?" She asked, her voice shaky with emotion.

Eloise had never been a religious person, because what God would throw a child into a trailer park with a mother who drank, did drugs, and neglected that child. But, after Ryan had left, she prayed to whatever God decided to give her a shitty life, to bring him back. To make him see that they were made for each other. To carry each other through the shit deal of a life they were given. And the only thing she was given, was a drunk text in the middle of the night. She had begged, really begged, for him to come back. And he didn't. Not until now, months later, when she was finally trying to heal, "you fucking left." She said, the tears finally rimming her eyes, "you don't get to come up to me and say 'long time no see'. That's not how this is going to work. You're going to get on that bike and leave, again, and let me fucking heal." She told him, the anger only making more tears fall.

From the front entrance, she could hear the Golfer asking, "Hey El, is everything okay here?" Eloise only took a glance at the man before turning her attention back to Ryan, "yeah just go back inside." She said coldly. This only made it clear that she didn't want to be here, "actually, I'm going to go home. I'll call a cab or something." She said, slipping off the uncomfortable heals, that were only a reminder that she very much was not this girl.

The Golfer seemed hesitant to leave her with this grubby looking guy, but nodded, as Eloise wasn't his and he wasn't Eloise's. Little did he know, she had no plans to call a cab. She'd walk home, or take a stop in the closest bar to forget any of this ever happened, and then walk home. She just knew she needed to forget all of this. So, she began to walk toward him, "you chose this. I wanted to fix us, but you drove away. Now it's my turn to leave." She said, those tears finally running down her cheeks, as she pushed passed him to make her way down to the front gate. Which, the attendant opened for her.

The pavement was cold against her bare feet as she turned on the sidewalk, to a bar that was decently close to her house. She didn't care that the pebbles hurt or that the night air was raising goosebumps on her skin. She just needed to get the hell away from the Country Club. As she walked, the tossed the heels into some bush that she passed by. She'd never wear them again, and the swish of the sequins on the dress were beginning to annoy her, which she did her best to ignore. She needed to forget though, this nightmare or whatever it was, that was happening. Why did he come back? She didn't know. All she knew now though, was how pathetic she looked with her makeup smudging and her dress dragging against the sidewalk. God, why did he come back?

In hindsight, maybe going to a ball that was marketed as a way for women to find their future husbands wasn’t Callix’s best idea. He was far from marriage material, and it wasn’t like he was trying to be. He preferred casual flings and low-commitment relationships that didn’t require him to become too emotionally vulnerable. In his mind, marriage was just something that would tie him down, make him deal with issues that arose in relationships rather than just running from them, and prevent him from engaging in the meaningless sex he so enjoyed.

Nevertheless, he made the decision to go to the debutante ball. He figured since it was such an outdated tradition, there would at least be some people there purely for fun. So he paid for the ticket, put on one of his more expensive suits, and hit the country club. As he entered, it seemed like a good place for him. People were all dressed up, looking to get to know other people with money, something Callix had far too much of. He perused the crowds, sizing up the well-dressed women and men, mingling, and getting to know each other. He ended up approaching and chatting up a rather attractive blonde woman. This encounter seemed promising until she stepped away for a second, leaving an opening for her mother to approach him and interrogate him about his marriage prospects, a conversation he swiftly backed out of.

So, yeah, the evening was shaping out to be a bit less fun than he planned. He wasn’t about to give up hope yet, though. There had to be at least one person desperate enough lucky enough to go home with Callix Lavelle. He was determined, that’s for sure. Heading to the bar to loosen up a bit, he ordered a gin and tonic and got right back to his game. He was determined, thats for sure. As he walked around the ball, he attempted to hit on way more women than he probably should have. Some briefly entertained his interest with an amused laugh, then quickly made their escape. A few seemed mildly interested, but those women were guided away by either their mothers or more intelligent friends. It was like people could sense his lack of commitment from a mile away.

Callix ended up back at the bar, getting another drink to lift his spirits. Maybe he’d just go to a club, anywhere less future-focused, where he’d be able to find someone interested in living in the moment. Though he made a couple more attempts to flirt with women at the bar, “You look—" the woman he was talking to just walked away in the middle of his sentence. Great. He took about five seconds to single out another target. “Baby, I’m about to call 911 because you are on fire.” The woman just laughed, shook her head, and walked away. He’d get it eventually. He turned to the next closest woman. “What’s it feel like to be the most attractive woman in this room?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. “Dude, you suck,” the woman said, rolling her eyes and walking away. She definitely heard him attempt to hit on the last two women.

Sighing, he turned back to face the bar and set his empty glass on the counter. He was about to call it quits and head to somewhere easier, before he felt someone’s hand graze his shoulders and neck. He looked to the side, locking eyes with one of the most attractive women he’d ever seen. Fully checking her out, not even attempting to hide the fact he was sizing her up, he noted that she definitely won best dressed in his eyes, looking dramatic and glamorous in a stunning dress. He smiled when she ordered another round of drinks. He was lucky that the bartender was still making his drink when the woman asked if he’d be coming home with her, because he definitely would have choked, unprepared for her directness. Quickly recovering from being caught off guard, he played it cool. “Is that a question or a command?” He smirked. “Either way, sounds fun to me.” Grabbing his drink, he took a sip. “So, do I get the pleasure of knowing the name of who I’m going home with? Or is this more of an anonymous kidnapping sort of thing?“

heobe Evans

Pheobe ran the comb through her hair one last time before resting her hands either side of the sink and stared at herself in the mirror. She liked the outfit she had managed to pull together for the evening. Her jacket didn’t quite fit her anymore, but she wasn’t planning to do it up, it would ruin the scandalising effect of the sports bra underneath. It wasn’t perhaps the most appropriate get up given that she was sort of working but it was comfortable and was much cheaper than having to go out and buy some fancy dress.

Happy now, with her look, she pushed off the sink and headed back out into the country club pausing only to toss her comb back into her kit bag on the bench. She emerged into a fairly empty venue, not to say that it wasn’t busy; server’s, chefs and other staff moving all over, but there were no guests around yet just everyone preparing for the ball tonight. Pheobe strolled off to find Cam, the head of security. She was quite excited for the evening really, growing up her family was never well enough off to attend something like this and by the time that she could have worked it she had already left.

After she walked for 10 minutes before found her target and greet him with a smile and a big hug, Cam was one of her father’s old friends and really the only reason she was here, sure officially she was here as a security consultant but actually she was just here to help the security team set up and then not get too drunk so she could help out if anything came up. For the next hour the two of them steadily walked around the venue chatting through what ifs and how to quietly remove people from the party if necessary. As the first guests arrived Cam split off to supervise the first tickets so with a brief hug Pheobe peeled off and headed to the bar to see what non-alcoholic drinks they had.

Pheobe was decidedly bored, it turns out that these sorts of parties are very boring if you’re not exceedingly rich or a guy looking for a wife, though the view was hardly unpleasant with everyone dressed to the nines. The only entertainment that she’d managed so far this evening was scandalising a bunch of “daddy’s girls” with her outfit and getting at least one wife to storm off as her husband stared. She had scoped out a nice spot for the moment and was casually leaning against the wall near the entrance casually chatting to the people running the cloakroom in-between the few late arrivals and early leavers.

There was no way in hell Raquel was going to that ball. A year ago, maybe even less, she wouldn't have hesitated to dish out the money for tickets, put on a fancy dress, and try to find her partner for life. But the last year really changed her, and the girl so desperate for love that she'd sell herself off at a debutante ball was no longer who she was. She'd been single for longer than she'd ever been and no longer felt like she needed to chase after some man to feel complete. Raquel was good enough on her own.

Although she wasn't about to partake in an old-fashioned, misogynistic, traditional debutante ball, she still wanted to go out and have fun. There were a lot of nights where Raquel was good with just staying in and curling up with a nice book, but it was clear that tonight was not one of those nights. She wanted to go out, have fun, and meet some new people. So, after looking up places in town she could explore, she settled on a pub.

Getting ready always took her ages. She had tried on way too many outfits, not necessarily because she disliked anything she tried on but because she got distracted with her options. Eventually, she ended up going back to the second or third dress she'd tried. Before she left, she made an effort to throw the clothing that was scattered across her room into her closet, just in case she ended up taking someone home. She'd been lacking in flings lately, mostly because she was scared of jumping headfirst into a relationship after sleeping with someone, but she'd grown more comfortable with being single and trusted herself to make good decisions. Maybe tonight would be the night she got back out there. Giving herself a quick once-over in the mirror, she headed out.

The pub was pretty nice. Yeah, sure, it was clearly a bit old, but it had a certain charm to it. The location also made it appealing; right on the water, there was something so calming about being able to just look out to the open water. She took a second in her car to touch up her lipstick, then started for the door. She could hear music and some chatter as she approached. She spotted a couple people she recognized from around town as she entered. She stopped for a second to smile and give a small wave to those she recognized, but didn't stop to chat with anyone. She was headed for the bar.

She took a seat on a bar stool, waiting a second as the bartender finished up his chat with some other people at the bar. When he made his way over, she smiled warmly and gave her order. "Hi! Could I get a vodka cranberry?"

Rich people better tip as well as people said they would, or else Veronica would be pissed to be wasting a night with these snobs. She had been offered a gig painting at the debutante ball, creating mini portraits of whoever wanted to. She was hesitant at first; it wasn't exactly her scene, but she was never one to turn down someone who offered to pay her well. She put little effort into getting ready; her hair was kind of messy, and she just threw on some plain black clothes that had a minimal amount of paint on them. It's not like anyone would pay her that much attention; she was just hired help or whatever.

Getting to the event a bit before it started so she could set up, she decided to just chill in her car for as long as possible. She wanted to spend as little time amongst the people who actually cared about this thing as possible. Catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror, she looked around for a comb, just to seem slightly more put together. Opening the glove compartment, she did not find a comb, but she liked what she found even better. A small tin of edibles she'd forgotten about a couple weeks ago. She picked them up and threw them in her pocket. For the sake of professionalism, she wasn't going to go into the job high, but if it got too boring or if one of the rich snobs rubbed her the wrong way, at least she'd have something to make her night a little better.

Heading inside, she found an event organizer. Despite this woman giving her a side eye (probably due to how unpolished she looked), she led Veronica to her spot outside and handed her a check. Veronica set up pretty quickly, getting her art supplies out and opening up a box with a ton of mini canvases. Already a bit bored, she began doodling a bit before the doors opened and the ballgoers began to arrive.

It was mindless work, really. She didn't put too much effort or creative vision into the simple portraits, but people seemed to love them regardless. People also didn't talk to her much; aside from simple hellos and thank you's, they tended to chat with their fellow wealthy friends as they sat to be painted. Not that Veronica minded; she was glad not to have to make pleasant, boring conversation. She was making pretty good tips as well. Lost in her own little world, she was close to finishing up a portrait for some guy all decked out in a tux. Although she was bored out of her mind, she figured at least she'd be going home with a decent amount of cash.

Frankie and Faith have been on the beach for the past few weeks. They moved in during the summer, after enrolling into the nearby college. Frankie met with the football coach and had already built up a good relationship with his other teammates. The plan was going smoothly, they just had to tough it out for the next four years, and then the world was theirs. Frankie would be a professional football player, and Faith..well Faith would be taken care of even if she never spoke again. Now today was a day for shopping, they had to get supplies for school, and they also wanted to explore their new place of living. He didn't care what they did, but as long as they stuck together.

Well, that was the plan at first.

Faith had gotten distracted by a bookstore and he was left holding all the bags. After twenty minutes of watching her explore the shelves, he wanted to go somewhere else but she just waved him off. So he just told her that he'll be around, and to call him if she needed him then he left to explore. Of course, the bags were weighing him down, so he had stopped by their apartment, to drop them off and left once again. He was walking along the beach when he spotted cameras and a girl in a bikini. Of course, he may not be sleeping around anymore, but it doesn't mean that he can't still appeciate a view like that. Plus, it was a pretty good place to watch the sundown.

So he sat, taking glimpses of the girl posing for the camera, and watching the waves. More or so looking at the woman, she was fucking beautiful, and if he was the old frankie, he would have introduced himself right away. Wasting no time to try his hand, and get her in his bed.

But the old Frankie was gone now, and the new version of him was a bit more reserved.

To survive this world, he needed to change. To protect his sister, the only family that ever mattered to him. He had to change who he was, to who he is now. Now all he does is watch people live their lives, while he is rebuilding his because this was the way his world was surviving. This is the way he was surviving. That means no more flirting, no more beautiful girls or guys in his bed. All he needs is his sister and their little home. That's how they stay safe.

But damn was she beautiful.
"...I wonder what's her name.."
He mumbles as he looks yet again.

The clink of the glass hitting the marble surface of her island, sounded off in her ears amidst the tip-tap of her fingers hitting the keys in the keyboard of her laptop. She’d been working long hours, throwing herself into her work and writing non-stop because the was never a shortage of drama in Rosemary beach. Jinx was gaining popularity among her peers, which meant long hours of writing senseless drama and downing wine in order to actually get through it.

Even with all the drama in Rosemary beach, things had been going well for Monroe. She was no longer at the beck and call of someone who didn’t even want her. She was with a nice man who showered her with lavish gifts and complimented her everyday but there was always something missing. Sure, he was nice and kind but Monroe was starting to get a tiny bit bored—even if she didn’t want to admit it. Evan was everything that she deserved and she could imagine what their life would be like up until the day they inevitably passed on. That’s what scared her, it was the knowing. She liked the unexpected and a little crazy, she craved it and Evan was not that— not like Everett. Their toxic cycle was exciting and unexpected. She couldn’t help but find herself wanting that, wanting him, even if he wasn’t good for her at all.

Monroe’s eyebrows furrowed together and she threw back her head to gulp down the rest of her glass, letting it clink once more with the marble. Reaching up, she grabbed the clip that was holding up her golden blonde hair and let it down fall down to her shoulders. Stretching her arms above her head, she let out an exasperated sigh just as her phone lit up but a knock at her front door caught her attention. Grabbing her device, she shoved it in the pocket of her cardigan and shuffled over to the door to peak through the peep hole. There stood none other than Everett fucking Astor.

Monroe’s heart thumped in her chest but she didn’t know if it was from utter frustration or if it was because there he was, standing in the hallway of her apartment building, waiting for her to open the door. With a shaky hand she swung the door open, just a little.

“Why are you here, Everett?” She asked, swallowing softly to cover up the quiver in her voice.

It was a pretty quiet day in the bookstore. Not that Sofia really minded the days it was busy; she actually enjoyed chatting with people and helping them out, but when it was quiet, she didn't really have to do much work. She could just sit by the register and do some reading of her own. She had been perched at the register for a while now, reading her well-worn copy of Sense and Sensibility while snacking on some freeze-dried strawberries. She had expected it to be pretty uneventful today; there was a lot going on in town, so not many would be coming in to wander the bookstore.

Days like these were always nice; she got some much-needed time to herself since she tended to pack her schedule with school and social events. Sofi liked being busy, but sometimes she forgot to schedule relaxation time. Still, Sofi hadn't been too stressed recently; she was in a pretty good place. Yeah, once school was back in full swing, she'd get busier and busier, but for now, her life was calm.

Only a couple people had come in since her shift started, and when she was alerted that someone else had entered by the bell on the front door, she barely looked up from her book to see a guy and a girl. "Welcome in; let me know if you need anything," she said in a pleasant tone, but remained distracted by the book in front of her. A decent amount of time passed before she heard the bell again, and when she looked up, she noticed that only the guy who had entered had left; the girl must still be looking around.

Since it had been a while, she decided to put a bookmark in her reading to get up and go see what the girl was up to. She was at work; she should probably actually go be helpful. Besides, someone who spent a good chunk of time browsing through books was her kind of person. Looking through a couple aisles, she found the girl gazing at a shelf with much interest. After getting a good look at the girl, Sofi noted that she was rather pretty, but she was never one to hit on random people, so she'd keep that thought to herself for now. She smiled warmly as she spoke. "Hi there! You looking for something in particular, or just browsing?"

It had been a year. A whole year since Owen had betrayed Emily's trust by sleeping with her best friend. So much had happened since then, and it was all weighing heavily on his mind today. He had thought about it all throughout his shift, the thick cloud hanging over his head as he waited tables. He had, however, learned how to be comfortable with his low-paying, grimy career. It wasn't the most prestigious job, nor was it respectable, but Owen was going to try to bring in more money for his daughter and her mother. He and Emily were really trying to make things work, at least, in a strictly platonic sense. He owed it to Cora to raise her right - he was not going to be like his father. Hell, he had never met the bastard in his twenty-two years of life. His mother hadn't kept in touch with Jack, either. So who knew where Jack Manning was? Would it be better for Owen to know that he was dead? Would he ever get the closure that he deserved? He didn't know. All Owen knew was that he was determined to be there for both of his girls, no matter what.

The clock hit six. Owen was finally off of work. He made sure to clock out before heading out the door, getting into his familiar Cadillac. Even though he had given up all hopes of living a lavish lifestyle, he still worked hard to continue to pay the car off. It was his second baby, only behind his actual baby, of course. Owen couldn't see himself giving it up, at least not now.

Tonight would be one of those nights where he'd stay over at Emily's to spend time with Cora. He wasn't trying to win Emily back, especially since she was single now. He was convinced that it would never work out between them again, and to stay co-parents would benefit everyone in the situation. He didn't want to confuse his little girl.

His little girl. Cora had her mother's eyes and a headful of thick hair. Her middle name was Florence, another name settled upon mutually between him and Emily. She had been tiny when she was born, but with lots of milk, she was on track to being a normal weight. Cora was two months old now and the apple of her father's eye. At first, he wasn't too sure if he was going to be able to do this whole parenting thing. But seeing those big bright eyes look into his, he knew that he had to. He had to provide for a helpless being. See? All that therapy was finally paying off.

Gravel flew underneath the screeching of his tires as he pulled up to Emily's house. Her back was turned to him as she made dinner. "Mm, smells good." Owen tried not to startle her with his words, but it didn't look like that had worked. "Is Cora sleeping? If she is, maybe I could help you cook?" It didn't matter that he was absolutely exhausted and just wanted to get off of his feet -- if Emily needed the help, he'd offer it to her. But when she turned to face him, he could tell that she had been crying. He was pretty good at noticing that - after all, he had been the one to make her cry time after time again. He was used to seeing those red, puffy eyes. But Owen was fairly certain that he hadn't done anything to make her upset. "...Are you okay? No, scratch that, I know you're not. Do you want to talk about it?" He had learned to open up about his feelings through the miracle of therapy. He just hoped that he wasn't crossing a line by doing so.

Frankie and Faith have been on the beach for the past few weeks. They moved in during the summer, after enrolling into the nearby college. Faith had toured her new school and saw where her classes would be. Even decided to take a class during the summer, learning about the history of music. She loved music, it brought her comfort in the darkest of days, the days that her brother couldn't even save her from her mind. Music did, which is why she wanted to study it. She wanted to be a singer, but that might never happen. A lot of shit in her past has made her scared of using her voice, she just grew tired of screaming, and no one hearing her. So she stopped talking, just stopped having a voice. Her brother did his best but he could never really heal the trauma that came from their past. All he could do was be there for her. Which is why they decided to spend the day together shopping.

The plan was for them to explore the beach, and grab some things for their apartment. The one rule was for them to stick together, knowing that separating scared the hell out of Faith and Frankie. The plan was going well at first, but then as always, something caught her eye.

A bookstore.

Faith loved books, so she dragged her brother into the store. After 20 or so minutes, she wasn't really paying attention as she was exploring the shelves and looking at a few books to purchase. Her brother got bored and tried to tell her that he wanted to leave but she was deep in a summary of a story that she was interested in. So she just waved him off, so he let her know that he'd be around in the area and that she should call him if she needed him. Faith nodded, kissing him on the cheek in thanks as he left. She went back into the book, putting it under her arm as she looked for more to buy. She was looking at a shelf filled with science-fiction stories when she heard someone come next to her. She turned to see a girl.

A really beautiful girl.

Faith wasn't one to talk to others, that was usually her brother's role. Before everything happened, Faith was like him. She was outgoing, and everything that came with being a part of the popular group but she was different now. She was quiet, a selective mute, and shy as fuck. So she shyly looked away from her face, as she looked at the shelves. She knew that one of her favorite series had come out with the next book. Faith couldn't find it. She glanced back at the girl in front of her, who had asked her if she was looking for something in particular. She nodded softly. She placed the book she had already picked out on the shelf. She took out her notepad, which she had kept on her in case she needed to 'talk' to someone. She wrote softly on the paper.
Do you have the newest book in this series?
She showed the notepad to the girl.

Faith also pointed to the series on the shelf as she showed her. Hopefully, she could help her, and not hate her for being a mute.

To be honest, Veronica wasn't really paying attention to what was going on around her as she finished up the details on this rich guy's portrait. But, when she glanced up, there was suddenly a new guy there, who looked a bit less put together, and the guy she was previously painting was standing in stunned exasperation. She wasn't really sure what to do, but before she could say anything, the guy she had been painting walked away. What a waste. As the guy currently in front of her positioned himself, she began to doodle over the old portrait since that guy clearly wasn't coming back for it.

"Get my good side, will ya?" The guy said with the utmost confidence. Veronica looked him over and rolled her eyes. "You're just so handsome, I can't tell which is the good side," she deadpanned, a clear lack of sincerity in her voice. She returned to painting a goofy mustache over the face of the guy in the old portrait. At least she got to have a little fun taking artistic liberties since she wasn't painting for anyone at the moment. But she knew she missed out on a tip. A tip that, from the looks of that guy's tux, she was bound to get.

"Seriously, what the fuck dude?" Veronica began ranting to the guy who had sat down. "I was nearly finished with that, I was probably going to get a huge tip. So, I just worked on that for nothing, just because you're an asshole who can't wait like five seconds."

She moved the painting she was messing with from her easel to the ground, out of the way, grabbing a fresh canvas and some more paint. She was hired to be here, and from the looks of it, this guy was here to stay, so she might as well get to painting him. Taking another good look at him, the wrinkled tux that was clearly too big for him and his earlier rude behavior told her that he was definitely not going to tip. He didn't seem like he belonged here; how did he even get in? "This obviously isn't your scene, so what's your deal?" She questioned.

When the girl Sofia approached didn't speak to her right off the bat, she thought maybe she could be deaf. But the girl did seem to acknowledge her presence quickly, even when turned away from her initially, so she figured she heard her. As the girl pulled a notepad out and began writing, she figured that she must be mute, something she had no issue with. Reading the response and taking a look at the series she had gestured to, she nodded with a smile. She had seen the new book in that series when it came in just a little bit ago, so she was familiar with it. "Yeah, follow me." She made a beckoning motion with her hand and then began to move through the bookshelves back towards the front of the store.

"It's up here with the other new releases. It can get kind of confusing with it not being near the other books in the series, though." She shrugged with a laugh. They approached a bookshelf near the front, but to the side, so it wouldn't be that visible unless you were looking for it. It had a small sign that said new releases. "This sign should probably be bigger too. But hey, I didn't design the store." Sofia examined the shelf before spotting what she was looking for, pulling the book out, and handing it to the girl. "Here you go!"

The book was from a series Sofia hadn't read before, but she'd heard good things about it and had thought of reading it a few times. The summary looked interesting enough. Sofi did often judge customers based on what they were reading, and this girl seemed to have good taste. "You ever been here before? I don't think I've seen you around." She wondered if the girl was new to town, since this was the main bookstore in town, and since she'd been working there for a while, she'd met most residents who were interested in purchasing books.

There weren’t a lot of things that made Evelyn Alexander excited but there was something that made her feel giddy about the possibility of a blossoming relationship. There was something different about Liv that Evie couldn’t quite place her finger on yet but she knew she’d figure out in due time.

She was working late into the night as her phone pinged, pulling her attention away from the task at hand and put a small smile on her lips as she stared down at the words on her phone. This was unusual for her. Especially since her failed engagement, she didn’t allow herself to feel anything, for anyone. She preferred to keep her head down and get her work done. But lately, there was a discomfort brewing in her chest ever since she moved to Rosemary beach and now a year later, she was ready to do something about it and finally put herself out there. Which meant, agreeing to go for drinks with a very pretty lady.

As the clock struck 7, she eagerly rid herself of her lab coat and smoothed down her crumpled clothes underneath. Then, she slipped on her pumps that she had stored in her locker and then threw on a soft touch of makeup. After, she grabbed her bag and made her way to the pub that was situated a little ways down the street from the lab. She took a seat at the bar and pulled out of her phone, sending Liv a quick text to confirm they were still meeting.

Are we still meeting at the pub? I’m sitting at the bar.

  • COLLIN MAXWELL
Collin wasn't expecting it to be a busy night at all. In fact, he expected it to be a ghost town, where he would spend most of his night cleaning and then maybe hit the hay early. But as more people poured in through the front door, he realized that his pub is where people gravitated to when the events in town didn't interest them or fit their social class. Despite the slight disappointment of not being able to go to bed early tonight, he was happy that people chose his bar to spend their time at, apart from all the other bars and restaurants the town had to offer.

Some people who came in were regulars, they usually left by 12. But then there were some new faces who Collin greeted happily. Normally people turned their noses up at his bar, with the old furniture and gritty feeling. But he was always determined to give a positive attitude and warm welcome, hoping the charm of himself and the bar would offer them a reason to come back. While his servers ran table to table taking orders, and his other bar tender was fast at work, Collin began to service the people at the bar top, joking and laughing with them as he made their drinks. Slowly he made his way down the line until he reached a familiar face. Though, he didn't quite know her name. He'd been in Rosemary Beach for some years now, so sometimes people who he'd never talked to before would come in, but had seen around town.

"Well good evening pretty lady, Vodka Cran coming right up." He said as a charming smile touched his lips. Grabbing the glass and supplies he needed, he began to mix up her drink. He even topped it off with a sour candy worm. Normally it wasn't a cocktail that he would add it to but sometimes he would add things like that to the drinks just to make others smile. "So what brings you out tonight?" He assumed someone who seemed high status like her would go to the ball, but he never judged when they didn't want to. It seemed weird for people to auction off their daughters to the highest bidders. Taking a quick glance at "the" ring finger, he noted that it was bare, which meant she was either just dating someone or single. Most of the time if they were taken that didn't matter to him, but he really didn't enjoy angry boyfriends or husbands showing up at his bar.

She’d been at the bar for about fifteen minutes now and still no reply to her message. This whole situation was out of Evie’s comfort zone. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d been on a ‘date’. Was this all a mistake? Even if it was, she’d calculated the risks 10 times over, poring over every little scenario and determining the ended but there was nothing that could have prepared her for the real thing. Even so, she had this feeling in her chest, the one that made her heart pitter patter with curiosity. She wanted to know what made this girl tick.

A minute or two passed of Evie sitting at the bar. She was playing with the edge of napkin when Liv walked in. Her curled purple hair swished back and forth with each step she took toward Evelyn. Evie’s cheeks were surely tinged pink and her face felt a bit hot. Liv was breathtaking and she didn’t need alcohol to know that for a fact.

Liv instantly pulled her in for a warm hug, which only deepened the flush of her cheeks. She couldn’t help but note how good Liv smelled or the way her eyes crinkled when she smiled. Evelyn cleared her throat, returned the hug, and then shook her head.

“I was waiting for you.. I hope that’s okay?” Liv wasted no time in calling over the bartender to order. Evie didn’t drink much but she did partake in a couple glasses of wine here and there but, this wasn’t exactly a fancy bar.

“So science, what exactly are you working on in school?" Liv asked. She was grateful that Liv knew how to get a conversation going because Evie wasn’t so good at it.

“I study biology.. I’m currently researching for cures to diseases and things of that nature. I’m not at liberty to discuss most of my work.. What do you do? Do you have a career?”

To say that Zach had ever been surrounded by such a level of opulence before would be a total lie. He wasn't even middle-class, much less wealthy-adjacent. So Zach stood out like a sore thumb, to say the least. But you know what Zach had done? He had successfully snuck into one of the biggest rich people events of the year. And he was like a proud papa holding his chunky baby boy his arms for doing so. Maybe he could find a rich hottie to take back to his place later tonight. With the luck that he was having already, it seemed like it was already being written in stone. All he had to do was find his target for the night. But first, a portrait.

Zach sized up the portrait-taker sitting in front of him - a moppy-haired blonde who clearly wanted to be anywhere but there at this very moment. There was an air of apathy around her, which intrigued him even more. But he wasn't going to take his chances on her in a physical sense - she wasn't from the upper crust like everyone else seemed to be here. No, she was more along his socioeconomic level, which was slightly disappointing, even though he totally wasn't going to make a move. What kind of man would he be, Owen Manning? Nah. It had been just about a year since Zach had caught wind of the scandal that had went down in this very building. Zach may have not been a good person at heart, but he would never stoop as low as that raven-haired freak had.

You're just so handsome, I can't tell which is the good side. The portrait-taker's voice brought him back to the moment at hand, the sarcasm as potent as the stench of an onion. But that didn't bother the dark-haired man any -- he was here to have a good time, and nothing was going to stop him, not even a sour mood. Before he decided to flip that around to a positive, the woman began to speak once more. Seriously, what the fuck, dude? I was nearly finished with that, I was probably going to get a huge tip. So, I just worked on that for nothing, just because you're an asshole who can't wait like five seconds..

Zach just grinned in response. "Well, I'd consider myself more of a suave, dashing leading man than an asshole. But tomato, tom-ah-to, eh?" He knew that he was definitely getting on her nerves, and, of course, he was going to take pride in that. Who wouldn't? But the painter must have obliged with his request to get a portrait painted, as his gaze moved from her to the materials she was getting. Everything was going to plan. He would finally get something to hang over his fake fireplace that was strictly for decoration purposes only. This obviously isn't your scene, so what's your deal?

He stifled a laugh at that. "What, I'm not passing off as Daddy Warbucks over here? I thought I'd fit in just well here - I'm wearing a suit, aren't I?" A counter-attack - one filled with as much sarcasm as he had in him. "Seriously, though, I just wanted to see what it was like on the other side of the fence. You know, grass is greener and all of that." Zach shrugged, loosening the tie around his neck slightly. "I don't know how these people do it - this seems so stuffy. Don't they ever have fun?"

nightmare dressed like a daydream
The ambience of Rosemary Beach’s ballroom enveloped Valerie like a familiar embrace. It reminded her of all the parties she attended back in Miami, leaving the young woman with a nostalgic yet intrigued feeling. yet within her, perhaps that was the reason behind the whirlwind of thoughts and desires that mirrored the chaotic elegance of the evening.

As she walked through amidst the sea of people, Valerie couldn’t suppress the amusement that shined in her eyes. This was going to be a night to remember, not because she would find her happily ever after, but because she knew she would be making this night her night.

“Another night, another opportunity to make everyone desire to be you,”
she thought, her lips curved in an alluring smile. The superficial charm she wore was her shield, a compass to navigate the sea of expectations that surrounded her. Yet, beneath the facade, her mind was full of a rebellious streak that defied the actual tradition of a debutante ball.

The fluttering gazes and hushed whispers that followed her every move were not unfamiliar; they were the symphony of attention she effortlessly commanded. But amidst the superficial allure, her thoughts flitted to those she held dear—the steadfast few who knew the depths beneath her playful facade.

Everything would be going according to Valerie’s plan. She knew she would end up leaving this party with one or maybe two people who would be down to their knees for her; it was just a matter of time. After all, it just takes a flutter of her eyelashes to mesmerize anyone that crossed paths with the girl.

But right now, it was just a matter of decide who would be the lucky one
