O.K.. What is your take on the Ley Line Walker vs. the Ley Line Rifter in general?

(I think the Mystic is out; they can only learn so much magic and I don't want the Psychic powers enough to limit their magic use.)

Oh whoa! Ley Line Rifters are kind of nuts! (Must have a Phobia or Obsession at levels 4, 8, and 12.)

I personally prefer the standard Ley Line Walker. There are some good things about the Ley Line Rifter, but I still prefer the original.

I think I can see why. For one thing, Elitists tend to be snobs and you and I have never liked snobs. (Snob sez, "Oh, we'll get along fine after you realize I'm just better than you.")

=)

Are there other classes that can freely pick up magic the way Ley Line Walkers can?

Not that I am aware of, other than the Techno Wizard, but you wish to steer away from that line of 'magic' with Snowfall. One nice thing about the class is that you are not restricted by your level for what magic you can learn. If you find someone to teach you a level 15 spell while you are second level, you can learn it and cast it - assuming you have enough PPE to make the spell work, that is.

Yeah. Techno-Wizardry is certainly something to be respected (anybody who can make their own darned P.P.E. batteries is a force to be reckoned with).

Are there any "must-have" spells you would recommend for a caster?

Also, the more I think about playing a casting class, the more I've been thinking of Egg Shen from Big Trouble in Little China, who is just a great character! =)

"Big Trouble in Little China (1986) opening scene"

Sil, I would take Automatic Dodge any way I could get it! Be it martial arts, psionic power, magic item device, what-have-you. It is an eternally handy skill to have! =)
Which kinds of ma's offer it at first level? Any recommendations? Like, I really like the idea of HEMA, but maybe I can shuffle things around to pick up a third system? It would be Eron-like to go all-martial...

Silanon Silanon That would be... Tai Chi Ch'uan, Drunken Style Kung Fu, Cotton Fist Kung Fu (Mien Ch'uan), and... Monkey Style Kung Fu.

Thanks! I'll take a look what might fit, potentially. Don't think I want Drunken Style for Eron specifically... but I'll see. Would have to see if I can find enough skills anyway...

Why not? Have you seen real Drunken Style in action? I think it's all about deception, relaxation, footwork, and hitting when your opponent doesn't expect it.

EDIT: Then again, that really isn't very Eron-like is it? =)

Sherwood Sherwood Silanon Silanon Psychie Psychie This is the latest (and hopefully final) write-up for my Hand to Hand: HEMA. =)

Exactly - he's mostly the kind of guy who sees an opening and just goes for the kill. Rex had Drunken Style in Broadsword, so I've seen some of it there; enough to think that it needs a different mentality than Eron's.

And World Book Three: England strikes out too. I can't think of anything in there that would fit Snowy. Time to reach for Rifts Conversion Book One (for the Warlock and potentially others).

EDIT #1: Dang! I can't find my copy of it (I could have sworn I own one). I tried Mystic Russia. No dice. Don't think Spirit West is Snowfall's gig any much more than I did Russia. =)

EDIT #2: Mysteries of Magic is based on the Palladium Fantasy game, but it too is a dry brook for a thirsty Snowfall. Hmm. It's looking more and more like Ley Line Walker. =)

Sherwood Sherwood Looks like it's Ley Line Walker at the moment. I've run out of resources on my end (physical books) to look.

Concerning experience points, are Snowfall's XP transferring point-for-point? Because if so, that 76,000 XP he's got makes him (barely) a 9th level Ley Line Walker.

Concerning spells, so... Ley Line Walkers get to choose 3 invocation spells each from Levels 1-3 then 1 spell at their own level or below when they level. Yes? So, Snowy would have (12 from 1st Level) + (8 from each additional level) 20 spells?

I'm sure I'll have more questions later, but for now? This is looking like genuine fun! I have had a taste of magic spells with Snowfall's rune weapons and I like what I've tried. The way this is headed, I'm thinking Snowfall is going to wind up even happier for having helped Brazamal, Olsen, Dweomer, and Clan Draco Amicus in the past. Not to mention good ol' Terra who started as a caster. =)

Yeah. This is... feeling pretty good! =)

Welcome to the caster club, Dann! Don't forget that as time goes on, I have a bunch of spells that you can learn from Terra. We'll get Snowfall up to speed with a quickness!

Here is a list of spells on my 'must have' list from Terra:
Globe of Daylight - simple spell, but it is 'true' daylight for vampires and other monsters that are vulnerable to it.
Lantern Light - more utilitarian and lasts longer than Globe of Daylight, even if it is not 'true' daylight

Cleanse - another utilitarian spell to help maintain your equipment
Cloak of Darkness - good defensive spell

Impervious to Fire - self explanatory
Simple Invisibility - I know that Snowfall can turn into mist, but this lets you stay in a solid form while being hidden

Magic Net - good spell to incapacitate an opponent for several minutes while you deal with some other opponent
Multiple Image - less important to us with our high MDC, but any chance to avoid getting hit is a good thing

Distant Voice - magic walkie-talkies
Escape - I don't know if you can be restrained and made unable to shift into your mist form, but if you wish to keep that ability under wraps, this spell is a good one to be able to free yourself from bindings to be able to cast again.

Impervious to Energy - not effective against rail guns or other projectiles, but makes you totally resistant vs energy attacks.
Reduce Self - a great way to slip into somewhere hard to get to by shrinking down to six inches tall

Lightblade - awesome weapon against vamps and other demons.

Magical Adrenal Rush - boosts your number of attacks by two for the duration of the spell of one melee per level. It does have a drawback of making you very exhausted for 1d4 minutes, but if you need those actions, it is great

Meteor - its an expensive spell PPE wise, but it does a lot of damage to a 40 foot area

These are all spells that Terra has, and I would be happy to share them with Snowfall.

After a while, all the casters are just different versions of one another with just a little bit of flavor added in.

Xp wise, you will not be using the Ley Line Walker xp chart, but will instead continue with the one you have. You are not losing your ability to get more tattoos, and as you level up you will be able to pick between getting spells or tattoos, but not both. Terra had to shift her xp chart to the Undead Slayer because of getting all the bonuses of the new class, even with losing her ability to control her automations, so that is a little different than Snowfall's situation.

Yes, before getting any spells from Terra, Snowfall will start with the twenty spells you listed.

As always, feel free to bring any questions you have to me. I am here for you guys.

Hooray! I just knew Snowfall would have his party leader's endorsement in this!

with a quickness!

There is only one other person I know who uses that particular phrase. He... didn't help infect you with the "desire to RP" craziness, did he? I swear it's just as long-lasting as ADHD (which is lifelong!)! =)

lol I guess I've spent too much time around you guys . . . it has made me a better gamer all around and has really sunk into my DNA.

From my experience, it's not possible to spend enough time with those folks.

Just had a look at Eron's skills - right now, I have 5 free skill slots, so I'd have to switch out 3 more skills to pick up two martial arts systems at the same time... candidates for that sort of thing would be his ability to read and speak spanish, his horse-riding skills that don't really show up ever, or various skills for ranged weapons - honestly, he'd rather bring grenades than an actual gun to a fight, it feels like. He just likes to be in the center of the action too much...

So you want that Auto Dodge that bad, huh? I'll have to keep this in mind for your future opponents!

I am not thinking that Terra needs auto dodge now. With her tattoos and new MDC level, she can hit almost a 1,000 points of MDC without going to her caster spells like Armor of Ithan. I can really take a hit.

Sherwood Sherwood So... he stays on the Tattooed Voyager xp track. O.K., I'm cool with that! But... is he then a Ley Line Walker with tattoo magic? Or a Dimensional Voyager with spells? What's happening to him here?

Yes, you'll stick with the Dimensional Voyager xp chart. It is hard to quantify your character here as exactly what you are, but I would go with a Dimensional Voyager with spells. That seems to feel right to me, since you are not losing your ability to use your tattoo magic but instead gaining the caster powers.

Terra is one badass character, and I'm glad you are happy with your progression with her.
