So you want that Auto Dodge that bad, huh? I'll have to keep this in mind for your future opponents!
At the moment, it's really just a thought experiment - but a fellow gamer named Dann recommended I take a look into it, and it's not worth sacrificing HEMA style-wise. Like, Eron was made to swing swords around in style. And there are a few skills that never saw any use for him.

If you're worried about auto-dodge on Eron, let me know - I'd be happy to pick up another martial system instead, no worries! There are other fighting styles for swords, right?

Yes, you'll stick with the Dimensional Voyager xp chart. It is hard to quantify your character here as exactly what you are, but I would go with a Dimensional Voyager with spells. That seems to feel right to me, since you are not losing your ability to use your tattoo magic but instead gaining the caster powers.
O.K.! =)

That is *definitely* the easiest way to go about it.

There are, but they're not that many. It's one of the reasons I made Hand to Hand: HEMA in the first place.

Friends, we are on page 250 in our OOC section here. Page 250!!

Wowowowow!

If you go with Auto Dodge, it will not make you invulnerable to damage, just hard to hit. Area of effect attacks can still rock your world, along with other stuff to make it easier for your opponents to score a hit. I can work with this.

Concerning spells, unlike most D&D/Pathfinder games, here in this Rifts game, spells are a marketable commodity? One can spend credits and get lots of the low-level spells but higher-level spells cost in the hundreds of thousands and Spells of Legend, whatever those are, cannot be purchased? At least that's how it's described in the Rifts Ultimate Edition.

Sherwood, does your game differ in this?

Are there some spells you'd rather me not select for the sake of gameplay or balance?

Between all of the people and places we know, might there be rare spells we could quest for or otherwise attain?

I'm still trying to get a handle on how all this works.

Psychie Psychie Snowy will definitely take whatever help Terra's willing to give him, including new spells! And thank you so much in advance for the help! =)

I still remember us sitting in the dinner room, making plans to move out to Atlantis - damn, it's been a while, huh?

I'll actually have to see how much HEMA will actually offer me compared to the Leopard style, given that it'd be at level 1, and my style is at level 8 already... since they won't stack. Auto-dodge would have the advantage that i can basically switch to that system to make sure that I can tank shots for a while without running out of actions... hmm...

Silanon Silanon Ah, you know that level difference takes a HUGE spike when your character ups a level? In other words, Sherwood is counting actual xp using my way of doing things in Robotech: Broadsword? You'll be 1st level now, but like... 7th-8th level in any system you choose now when next Eron levels!

Ah, I missed that part - I thought that at level 9, I'd have Leopard at 9 and HEMA at 2, which is... hardly a real choice. Well then, that makes HEMA much more attractive again - thanks for pointing that out!

My pleasure! In my tabletop Rifts games, folks would hardly ever use their second Martial Art system because it was so low-levelled. So, I took to looking at how much xp they gained between levels. Put that against the xp table of their class and - bang. You have what level they are in their second Martial Art system! It works great for me plus people use what they've rightly earned. =)

You understand you can only use one system at a time though, right? At the beginning of Initiative, you inform the GM which of your systems you're using for that round. When initiative comes up again, you can swap forms only then. Not mid-action (say, to get more actions)! All W.P.s and Attribute bonuses you get accumulate, but you can only use Weapon Katas in the system you have those Katas in. Put another way, The "Ways" in HEMA can only be used when using HEMA, not Eron's Leopard Style Kung Fu. However, any W.P. Skills he has earned from either system are simply Skills and therefore open to be used.

That was my understanding, yes! And it's probably a good thing. I mean, switch to another system after each own action, just to get auto-dodge? Please no. But I like to have options, personally, and it feels like the one thing Eron would try to really become better at. After all, he's a dedicated fighter.

Spells can be tricky to learn, especially the higher level ones. The hard thing is to find a spellcaster that is willing to teach you, no matter the price. There are a few spellbooks out there, but they are rare.

So far, I have not come across a spell that is game-unbalancing. Spells like Carpet of Adhesion and Magic Net are low level ones that have a very crippling effect on your opponents that is almost impossible to counter. There may be spells out there that are problematic, but off the top of my head I don't know any.

Sometimes, you might be able to do a spell swap with another caster, exchanging knowledge to get a new spell that you lack.

I've got a better business model: We're grabbing some evil spellcasters, let them go for the knowledge of a few spells, then move out and catch them again. That's infinite spells and infinite missions in one!

Speaking as a real life martial artist, I have to add this in there. In general, I say learn a martial art because you genuinely like the culture surrounding the system as well as the system itself. I think someone's really robbing themselves when, for example, they take, say, Karate only for its powerful attacks and defenses. They do not look into what Karate is all about! What a shame this is!

What about the character building, the self-control, the drive for excellence, reaching for hard work, and the changes to Karate over the past 70+ years in real life? In each martial art, I find strong heritage, history, and sonetimes deep wisdom. I think it's a very rich world out there to partake in.

I'm glad it's that way. There are a good number of things that I could not do half of my lifetime ago, that I can do now. And well. I busted my butt to learn and change myself for the better.

If spells are like that, then I'm all for it!

Yeah. I was getting that impression. They are magical secrets but they're also... like.... trading cards like Magic the Gathering or Pokemon. An odd combination of both, it seems! "Gotta catch 'em all!" Or however it goes!

To all - Are there any spells that you would highly recommend Snowfall get?

Sherwood Sherwood I would like to somehow involve Japan in this. Not because Rifts Japan has any new spells (they don't). But that Eastern magic is somehow represented.

Since Snowfall is retaining his abilities, is there a way to do this? I don't want to simply say he learned everything he knows about spell casting outside of his birthplace. It feels wrong to do otherwise somehow. This isn't just picking up another language, but like a martial art, a new way of life.

There must be a way to add some kind of Eastern flavor to his magic somehow.

/silly on

I don't know where your ideas, Sil! It is like you're a Game Master in another game thinking these things up or something! Heh heh!

/silly off =)

Definitely the net. And obviously everything that reads "protect your dual-wielding friend or make him more badass".

I also felt like the more controlling spells like the wind walls etc match Snowfall's cunning approach quite well. Are there illusion spells? Trickery? That sort of thing? I'd recommend spells that let him outsmart people, not necessarily outgun them.

*slaps his own forehead.* How did I not see that coming? =)

Sherwood Sherwood If Snowfall now uses the Ley Line Walker's ways, he can cast Invocation spells, right? Is he able to cast from any other style of magic (for lack of better word)?

I like the idea of trying to find Eastern spells for him to cast, but I'm avoiding Chi magic entirely because of the rules you set down when I first created Snowfall concerning chi. You said no Chi combat. That very probably means no Chi Magic either, right?

Edit: If this is true, are there Eastern invocation spells that Snowfall could learn somewhere? He would visit Japan again if he needed to.

Yes, any Invocation spell is valid for you to be able to learn/cast. Depending on the level of the spell, you'll need some extra PPE from willing (or unwilling) donors to provide it.

I would have to look into Chi Magic to be able to rule it in or out. I am totally ignorant in that category of magic and would have to study it to see how it would effect the game.

As far as I know, all the Invocation type spells are listed in the Book of Magic. If there is some oriental flavor that you wish, the special effect of the spell can be altered a bit.

So, we have Terra getting a whole-body tattoo session going on and Snowfall learning how to cast Invocation spells. Is there anything along these lines that Eron would like to look into besides learning other martial art styles? Or do you just want to see what kind of armor I will be offering up to you in the next arc of the story? I don't want to leave Eron out in the cold.
