It wasn't a surprise that there were trainers even deep in the cave, since the Sinnoh tourism pamphlet did say that Iron Island is a place where they came to train.

The two self-proclaimed veterans challenged them to a battle, Altair wasn't that surprised, though their choice of Pokemon was certainly interesting. They were weak to rock and steel type Pokemon, though that might be what these trainers are trying to do in the first place, overcoming their weaknesses.

G sent out her Sneasle, which was likely her strongest Pokemon. Altair looked at the Pokemon sent out, with two being dark type and G's Pokemon at a disadvantage, and relatively weaker offensively, it would be a bad idea to use Psion, as the Klefki's support capabilities would be blocked. Sneasle was at the very least, quite effective against Beautifly, though Altair didn't want to think about it taking a bug-type move from the sky.

"Alright. I accept." Altair replied after seeing G send out her Pokemon, he knew there was no refusing for him anyway. "Morgrem...and Beautifly. That's a combo for sure." He muttered under his breath, Altair recognized other Pokemon with the ability prankster from all his experience from working with Psion. It would be a bit troublesome without either of his dark types, or status immune Pokemon, but at least he did still have some type advantage.

"Come on, Kitaya." With a red flash from the Pokeball, the geometric dragon steel type Pokemon emerged. Duraludon, not the best choice perhaps, but he doubted that the Pokemon the opponents sent out were their best ones either. Training grounds are training grounds for a reason.

"As long as he doesn't bring me any trouble for hanging out with you." Altair whispered back to G while shrugging his shoulders after the heavily accented (or just speaking a foreign language) trainer allegedly wanted a photo with G for her internet fame.

"Kita, snarl." Altair waved his hand to command the first move. It wasn't an effective attack, but Altair was using it for its side effect of hitting both Pokemon while reducing their special attack. G seemed really eager for this battle, it's best to prevent her Pokemon from getting knocked out too fast.

"Oh good call, Altair. Now, maybe we should-" G was just about to go into the thought process, when her opponents started moving.

The Morgrem burst into crying, letting out a loud whailing cry while tears poured out of it. The Morgrem stopped crying as the wave from the Snarl pushed it back a bit. At the same time, the bug flying Pokemon fluttered her wings angrily at the impact of Duraludon's attack. But the bug wasn't done, she followed up the Fake Tears from her partner and began to hover higer into the air while sending slashes of wind towards both opponents.

Spicy cried out as the Air Cutter hit and knocked her back on her bottom. "Spicy! Get up, Scratch!"

Spicy jumped up, but only to be knocked down once again as Morgrem knocked her down with a Sucker Punch. Meanwhile, Beautifly began to gather energy around herself, getting ready to send a Silver Wind on the distracted Sneasel.

"Focus." Altair said to G as the battle was already beginning. Morgrem used fake tears, its movements were rapid, even more so than Altair's own Pokemon. He recognized those movements as being from a Pokemon with the ability prankster, but it seemed like its user didn't completely understand the ins and outs of the ability yet. Beautifly soared up to hit Sneasel with air slash, it seemed to be some sort of combo move with fake tears, though due to Sneasel's typing, it was immune from the crying of the fairy type.

"Get over there, Light Screen." As the Beautifly charged up another attack after Morgrem used sucker punch to knock back Sneasel's attack, Altair commanded his Pokemon to protect her battling partner with the defensive move, at the same time physically shielding Sneasel from the bug-type attack, as neither flying nor bug type moves would be able to do any serious damage to the steel-dragon type Duraludon.

"Don't panic. It happens." G seemed rather flustered, at least to the point where she forgot her Pokemon had super-effective ice type moves against the Beautifly. Altair quietly said to his partner as the silver wind struck the duo, but much of its power was filtered away by the barrier from light screen.

The Morgrem began to move again, in a speedy fashion as well, it was generating a spark of electricity that turned into thunder wave, and was sending it towards Duraludon. Likely to prevent it from supporting Sneasel again and securing the knock out. Altair narrowed his eyes at the sight. "Try to have Spicy block Morgrem's move." He quickly said to G before giving another command to his Pokemon.

"Thunderbolt, over there." In the corner, after sending off the silver wind that was weakened by light screen, Beautifly was flapping its winds and generating a breezes that permeated the cave, a tailwind began to blow behind the other team, before it was stricken by the bolt of electricity.

Easy for him to say.

G thought while she watched in awe the other trainers spring into action. But Altair was right, she needed to focus more on her side of things than admiring others. With her mentor's instructions, they lept into action. "Block that Thunder Wave!"

G wasn't sure how Spicy could do such thing but without a doubt, the Sneasel moved in front of her partner and with a quick movement of her claws, she slashed the electric move out of existence. Spicy looked tired but proud. The moves the enemy was using was taking a toll on her but she was finally being useful.

"Let's keep that Morgran thing away, Ice Shard!"

Sneasel summoned the pointy spears around, faster and better looking than when they first met Altair in Snowpoint. With accurate precision, the shards shot like bullets at the impy Pokemon.

"Dare it to attack back with Taunt!"

Spicy snickered and pointed her claws at the Morgrem, signaling for the thing to go after her.

Luckily G was fast to react, and ordered her Sneasel to block the thunder wave with its body. This way their team would still be faster than the opposing one. She followed up with ice shard, then taunt on Morgrem. Not the worse choice, Altair wondered if she's caught on to the Morgrem's move patterns, as it was playing the more supporting role in the duo, and taunt would shut down its main functions. "Not bad, that makes things a bit easier for us." He quickly complimented.

However, to a Pokemon weak to the opponent, taunt is a double-edged sword, as Morgrem fell for taunt, it began to charge up with an energetic glow. Beautifly was also regaining its momentum from the thunderbolt, and fluttered its wings to generate another silver wind, aimed at Sneasel once again. "Still going with that, huh." Altair muttered, it was an effective strategy to target down one side in a multi-battle, but it did feel a little like bullying, especially in this sort of circumstance. "Kita, get in front, protect!" The metallic Pokemon lunged in front of Sneasel and generated its protective barrier to shield it from the two super-effective moves.

After the two ranged attacks were finished and ineffective due to protect, Morgrem launched ahead physically into a punching stance, attempting to use drain punch, a fighting-type move that would be super effective on either of its opponents.

"Flash cannon it away." Altair saw the Morgrem moved and decided its moves were more dangerous compared to the Beautifly's, and the steel-dragon blasted a shining beam to the fairy Pokemon's direction. Meanwhile, the weakened Beautifly was fluttering down to the ground and seemed to be taking a breather after taking some attacks with roost, it was also a move that removed its weakness to Duraludon's thunderbolt and Sneasel's ice shard at the same time. "Don't let it take a break, G, you know what to do here." He said to his partner while gesturing to the Beautifly, as the moves played out on the field.

"Attack, Spicy!" G called out, not knowing what move she could use but knew they had to act fast.

Sneasel jumped over her protector, watching the Flash Cannon blast away. That's when the sneaky weasel got an idea. As she ran alongside the beam hitting the imp Pokemon, Spicy slashed the steel type enrgy beam. She flinch at first, like if it had hurt. But, the dark type kept rushing forward while her claws gained a metallic glow. Her claws were full of pain, as if they were being crushed by the energy of the steel typing forming around them.

The Beautifly was too busy trying to recuperate that she didn't have a chance to react to the incoming Sneasel. Metal Claw connected with the bug and some energy seemed to power up Spicy mover after using the attack, that she build up another round of Ice Shard, shooting that flying bug that was trying to get away.

"Go Spicy Go!" G cried out, not sure what just happened but knew they were winning.

Note: Trying something new with 3rd-person character POV narration, so I apologize if this comes out harsh.

After returning her Charcadet and escorting Milliana back to the Professor's Lab in Sandgem Town, Ramona said her farewell. There was no reason to escort Milliana, and even though she wanted to stick around the girl, there were plenty of reasons not to. Ramona wanted to be alone since her argument with Rincewind and Lewis's attempts at trying to be passive and non-confrontational (honestly, it reminded her of Eléonor and how much it irked her) had soured her mood, and Milliana didn't need protecting with that large steely dragon next to her.

Ramona just made sure she directed Milliana to the correct Pokemon - the small blue penguin monster - so Ramona didn't get upset with herself if Milliana grabbed the wrong Pokemon. Regardless, who would mistake a Water-Type blue penguin for a Fire-Type red monkey? A Grass-Type green and brown turtle? It was obvious to Ramona that Piplup would eventually become a Water/Steel-Type because of their natural habitat of needing to cleave through icebergs, obvious that the Chimchar would evolve into a Fire/Fighting-Type because of their naturally rambunctious and battle-hungry behaviors, obvious that the Turtwig will evolve into a Grass/Ground-Type because of their connection to nature and the soil they're on. And yet she found herself letting Milliana know how to distinguish a Piplup from the other starters because she felt like this stuttering girl was maybe not as smart as Ramona thought, especially after she asked what starter to get, like she didn't even do her research for a type she wished to specialize in.

Honestly, she was glad to be rid of her. She couldn't stand her stumbling. As much as Ramona tried to be patient, it had worn her patience thin. Now that she was free of any burdens people, she could finally start on getting to Jubilife City.

It was already the afternoon - her phone said 1 pm. Since it took fifteen hours walk there, she'd have to camp out six hours into her walk to camp out at 9 pm, and then finish off the next nine hours... Or cut the trek by half and walk for seven and a half hours until 10 pm.

Yeah, that would do.

Her trek along the rather straight yet hilly grasslands was quite nice. Yes, nice. No one to distract her, and she was left alone to her thoughts...

Hah, she didn't know what a Piplup was? Pathetic...

Ah! But this is very unbecoming of a Pokemon Ranger! We should go back and apologize...

Nah, there's no need. We're already so far ahead on this route anyway, it would be a waste of time to go back and apologize...

Wait, apologizing and letting someone know I don't actually think poorly of them is a waste of time??? How could I think that?!

Eh, well... I'm too lazy. She'll come find me, Sinnoh isn't that big, right?

Ugh, unbelievable...

These thoughts - a battle of wits between her conscience and her vices - continued. She really just wanted to be rid of this spiral.

They stopped when she caught sight of a Shinx. Pausing in her step, she stared at the blue and black cat, eyes wide. She should catch it, like she said she would earlier.

The Shinx, with his larger tuft of fur on his head swaying in the calm breeze, stared back at Ramona. The two locked eyes, yellow to hazel, until the Shinx ran off. Not wanting to lose her catch, Ramona chased after him.

She stopped short of a hill as she looked on with some concern. A Luxio was attacking a poor man. His clothes looked rugged and he looked dirty, as if he was either on the road and been in a few scuffles or poverty-stricken and forced to live out here. Pulling out her green school styler, she grinned at the Shinx.

"Thanks for leading me, snitch." She then jumped and slid down the hill, sending out the capture disc with its aura trail leading it. "It's okay, troubled homeless man, I gotchu!"

While the Shinx stared bewildered in confusion at what he was called and what it meant, the man stared bewildered at the woman with rising frustration. What the fuck did she call him???

The shocked expression on the man's face didn't waver as the young woman expertly wrapped the capture disc around the Luxio in tight circles, the Luxio trying to follow the disc's movements. The glowing bits seemed like a toy.

Then, the ring vanished as the momentarily distracted Luxio was no longer irate at the man, just confused and docile. The capture disc came back to Ramona's styler and she chuckled. "There we go! No more attacking this guy, alright?" She noticed the Luxio was a bit skinny, so she continued. "I don't think this guy's got any meat on his bones anyway for you to try and eat this guy anyway."

The Luxio huffed and ran off, clearly confused by this young girl's behavior.

When Ramona turned to the man, she was met with not a congratulatory gaze, but that of a stern look. She felt like he was her father with that sternness. It honestly surprised her. "H-hey, what are you looking at me like that for?"

"You honestly don't know...?" He asked, as if she were stupid.

She took great offense to that, her mouth agape in shock. "Hey! I saved you! Maybe you should be a bit more grateful!" She pointed at him, teeth gritting.

He nonchalantly waved his hand towards the side, as if brushing off her feeble attempt at guilt-tripping him. "Yeah, and I appreciate it, but I'm not a fucking hobo. But I'll at least let the comment about my musculature slide. Regardless, calling me a hobo is insulting. Are you really a Pokemon Ranger?"

Her eyes widened, anger coursed through her veins. "How dare you! You can't just say you appreciate it and then question my identity, that's contradictory! I'm the best in my class! I have a styler to prove it. What, do you need to get your eyes checked, too?"

The man chuckled darkly, rubbing his stubbled chin as his stormy blue eyes assessed her. "Hah... People like you exist?" He sighed, shaking his head. "Look, kid, I'm not going to beat around the bush. You don't just call someone based on what you think they look like. If they look worse off than you, that doesn't give you the right to assume their identity. And another thing, aren't Pokemon Rangers supposed to de-escalate? It seems like you're ready to pick a fight with me."

Her mouth was agape. How could this man talk to her like that?! She was about to say something else, but he interrupted her mid-breath, her words dying on her tongue.

"I can question your identity all I want because of you how behave. You sound arrogant and entitled just because of your position over me as a Pokemon Ranger. You expect me to be grateful? Act like a fucking hero instead of an arrogant little kid who got a new toy. How old are you even?" His eyes squinted.

Ramona snarled. "I'm nine-fucking-teen years old, I'm not a fucking kid!"

"You act like you're five. Come off it. You act as if you're better than me, I can hear it in your tone and I can hear it from the words you use." The man sighed, running his hands through his short brown hair. "I'm done. Go and spit your venom elsewhere." The man left, going on ahead on the path as Ramona - stuck in her anger - glared daggers at the man's back.

Then... Then she felt herself deflate.

Was... Was she that bad...?

She looked down at her hands. She could see the crescent shape of her fingernails having dug into her palms. Why was she so angry...?

Was she not... good enough to be a hero...?

Confliction and regret morphed her furious expression into something softer, more vulnerable. She reached out to the man's retreating figure. "Wait-! I'm-..." Words of apology died in her throat as she realized the man was either purposefully ignoring her or didn't hear her.

Hah, he should get his ears checked too, for treating me like that...

Wait, wait, no no no, I don't mean that either... What's wrong with me...?

Sensing her deep reflection and sorrow, two Pokemon leapt from their Pokeballs. Luchamar, her Ralts, and Lanuda, her Minccino. The two Pokemon looked up at her trainer, her arm falling to her side weakly.

Those words stung so much. With a deep sigh, she gave the two Pokemon a weak smile as she walked along the same path, her feet dreading to walk the same direction as the guy she saved, but she didn't want to contend with the stronger Pokemon on the edges of this route, nor did she want to contend with the tricksters in the Bewilder Forest. She could feel the comforting emotions coming from her Ralts, and the soft feel of Lanuda climbing up her clothes to perch atop her shoulder, her tail resting against the back of her trainer's neck.

There was a little chirp behind her. She turned around, seeing that same Shinx from earlier. She huffed, shaking her head. "No... Sorry, buddy. Just go on with your life."

She turned around and was going to leave him behind, but - out of pity or guilt - tugged on her pant leg. Sighing, she huffed. "I don't really understand why you want to be with the likes of me. But okay." She pulled out her Pokeball, the ball dropping on the Shinx's head as it wiggled thrice and caught the Shinx. She huffed, picking up the ball and pocketing it.

She still couldn't understand...

Well, maybe this Shinx wanted to fight for her unlike the five she had. She should probably give him a nickname.

Mind and heart heavy, she camped out as night fell, setting up her tent and letting her Pokemon and herself eat before sleeping for the night. The new additions to her team - the Shinx and Turtwig - as well as her old companions slept next to her, concerned for her well-being.

Altair sighed, he wanted to tell G to focus again as the girl began to fumble over her commands to her Pokemon, but the movement of her Sneasel became rather curious as it slashed at the Beautifly.

Its moves were sharper than before, and it did successfully attack the butterfly pokemon. At the same time, the flash cannon was a super effective attack into the Morgrem, but despite the damage the fairy-type took, it still managed to charge through and used drain punch into the steel type, attempting to hit one of its few weaknesses. "Kita, reflect!" Altair called out as he saw the Morgrem breakthrough the energy beam.

"Is that...hmm..." Altair looked at Sneasel's attack, it did look very familiar, and it began to use the attack after coming into contact with flash cannon. "I think that's metal claw." He said to G quickly. "Good timing, it's a move that's super effective on fairy types like Morgrem." He continued, as it seems like the Morgrem already lost a large part of its health due to flash cannon, and the recovery from drain punch was snapped by reflect as well.

"Thunderbolt!" Altair saw the Beautifly flutter back into the air after being staggered by Sneasel, now its airborne once more, the electric type attack would be more effective on it.

"I'll leave the other to you then." He nodded at G, referencing Sneasel's new move.

"Metal Claw?" G's confused expression was quickly followed by a confident one. The smug look on her face said it all. Those moments in life when you have the victory in front of you and you just need to give the final blow, the fatality, time to finish him!

"Metal Claw!" G called out, pointing straight at the fairy dark type trying to get back on his feet.

Spicy followed her trainer's instructions and confidence. The smirk on her face and her claws gaining that metalic look. It still hurt a bit to have such pressure and weight on her usually lighter claws, but the adrenaline was helping her push through. Sneasel zig zagged, just in the case the Beautifly tried to slow her down, across the floor and then...

Slash!

Her claws collided with the Morgrem. The impact sent the pinkish Pokemon flying and landing on its back, clearly unconscious. Just like clockword, the fairy's partner fell to the ground next. Spicy raised her shiny claws in a victory pose while G ran over to Altair. "Did you see that? Come on, that has to be like one of the coolest fight scenes in Pokemon history!"

G gave Altair a strong hug, while Spicy went over to the steel dragon to show of her shiny new move. G let go of Altair, only to notice the disappointed look on Riku's face. "Hey, you mind taking us a picture? I feel bad denying it after they tried to win against such a strong duo like us." She said teasingly while giving Altair her Rotomphone.

"Come on Riku and Haruto, we should take a picture together as a souvenier. Just, please wait a few days before posting it online. I don't want fans coming in here looking to try and get one too." The streamer walked over to the two trainers.

Riku said something understanable again, and Haruto just laughed it off. G stoo in between the two trainers while Riku tried not to look as nervous. Once the photo was taken, Haruto walked over to Altair while G tried to undersand Riku's rushed speech. "Hey, your Pokemon is pretty strong. Great place to train a steel type like that. Are you going for this years gym circuit? If you are, I need to be on the look out for you. I was wondering if we could exchange socials. Asking G might be too much and I'm more interested in a good battle than video games anyways."

Stretching, Ramona woke up from her sleep. She had about seven and a half hours before arriving in Jubilife City. While her and her Pokemon ate breakfast, she reflected on what happened yesterday. Met with her own personal denial over the situation as she glanced over at her new Shinx, she smirked.

Hah, she was in the right. Fate wouldn't pity her, it would reward her. Maybe she was actually doing something right by cussing that guy out!

Her Pokemon that had been with her the longest - Ralts, Minccino, Tandemaus, Charcadet, and Flittle - saw the look on her face, one born of arrogance. They gave flat expressions before collectively sighing. Much to their chagrin, she regressed. Her Turtwig and Shinx looked at Ramona, confused as to why she's looking like that and why the other five Pokemon weren't so pleased.

Ramona huffed as she saw the two Pokemon's confusion, deigning to enlighten them on her thoughts. "Tch, you two haven't been with me the longest, but my five Pokemon are well aware of my habits. I reflect on something that's happened and then come to the conclusion that nothing was my fault. Because it is actually not my fault." She gloated as she gave a smug grin to the other five Pokemon, as if smug that she found this out all on her own. "It's that guy's fault for questioning me. Fate wouldn't have had a Luxio fight him if he hadn't done something bad anyway, and fate wouldn't have let you come with me out of pity, so it must've been a reward." The Shinx was astounded.

What sort of mental gymnastics did her mind do???

Well, if she was going to talk like that, Radilux will just have to not battle when Ramona needs him.

It seemed Ramona was raring to go, as she packed everything up and stretched once she stood up. "Anyway, time to go~."

Before the Pokemon were returned, the Flittle chirped at the two newcomers. 'She's always like this. She doesn't believe in fate one moment because it won't let her be in denial, but when it would benefit her idea of her superiority, she suddenly believes in it. We're pretty sure she knows what she's doing, she just conveniently ignores it for her own sake.'

Radilux nodded, glad that Psijaro explained the situation.

The seven Pokemon were returned, so Ramona began walking her long trek through the hilly path of Route 202.

A few hours went by, and she found herself actually seeing the city with greater detail as she continued. As she got to the homestretch, she saw someone she was really hoping to not meet under the sun's zenith.

That guy.

Ramona glared daggers at him. How dare he ruin her happiness by existing!

The man - who was just pulling down his tent - looked over and saw her again. "Hah, you again?" He said a little too happily. Ramona knew it was fake.

"Hmph, what? You trying to pick a fight with me again?" She glared. Only for the man to continue smiling. It was rather unnerving. Why wasn't he saying anything??? "Hey, say something!"

"Oh? You sure about that? You know, I could get you into reeaal trouble." The man spoke with such calm alacrity, it made Ramona's face turn cold. "I just looked up what a Capture Styler was. Green Capture Stylers are only given to student rangers. They hold minimal capabilities that help to calm the Pokemon down, but because you aren't fully connecting to the Pokemon's aura with your own, you can't command them as your own. This is to prevent new and upcoming rangers from exploiting their gadgets before they're properly taught and vetted, but it apparently doesn't stop arrogant ones from saying they are a Pokemon Ranger. By all definitions, you aren't one. Not yet, anyway, as you haven't graduated yet."

Ramona's eyes widened. "W-wait, what are you getting at?"

"I found a law that says you could get punished and your academy is going to have to punish you for it if they ever found out." He sneered. "Something about a fine and whatever the academy has in store for you. It depends on how thin the ice is for you. They could either put you through therapy or prevent you from ever becoming a ranger." He then chuckled, pulling up his phone that had this particular information to show that he wasn't lying. "And before you say that this is blackmail, it's not. Since what you're doing is actually illegal, all I have to do is tell the authorities and press charges. But, I can always turn a blind eye. You're a young kid, so I would actually feel bad if I took away your career choice that you have been working all your young life to get." He then smiled again, as if he hadn't just said anything so evil. "If you want a name to this face who's got you cornered, you can call me Aoto."

Ramona was in complete shock as she stared at the screen. She honestly didn't know how bad the academy's opinion on her was, but she knew they took impersonation seriously. To know that they would punish one of their up-and-coming student rangers with penalties all the way up to revoking their privilege as rangers...

It scared her. And Aoto can see it.

Soon enough, Ramona regathered her bearings. She didn't even realize how clenched her fists were. "Ugh, can't believe you'd use your scummy underhanded tactics like that... You are correct. While I am not a Ranger yet, I'm still at the top of my classes. I only asked for vacation leave so I can roam around Sinnoh and spark a greater bond with my Pokemon." She huffed, crossing her arms. "So, if I were you, I'd watch it."

"Threatening me? As what? A Pokemon Ranger, a student, or as a civilian? And will your Pokemon even fight for you?" How could her Pokemon ever follow a single command?

Ramona glared daggers at the man. "They will fight for me, just you wait and see!" She threw out her Pokeball, sending out her Turtwig. "I'll prove it to you in a Pokemon battle!"

Aoto actually laughed, which only further brewed her anger. "Oh, how cute. Let's go, Sweetie." He released his Togetic, the strange, white avian floating just above the ground without flapping his wings.

Ramona knew that this thing was a Fairy/Flying-type, but she realized her Turtwig had no Poison- or Rock-Type attacks, let alone Ice or Electric. Maybe Turtwig knew a Steel-Type attack? Yes, that's it, he knew Heavy Slam! And Grassy Terrain won't affect Togetic because it's not grounded!

"Terretuga, Heavy Slam!" She knew he was heavier than the Togetic by a lot.

"At least you know your type chart." Aoto commented nonchalantly, getting a conflicted prideful and angry reaction from her. "Togetic, Charm."

The Togetic calmly stood there, letting the Turtwig charge at him. He then blinked cutely, Terretuga now having conflictions on hurting Sweetie. With Terretuga's lowered Attack, the Turtwig slammed into the Fairy/Flying-Type, but it barely did anything.

Ramona realized that it would take several hits before the Togetic was anywhere near being knocked out. However, with how little power Terretuga had now, Heavy Slam was the strongest move she had, effectively locking her out of other options without even using Disable or Imprison. She gritted her teeth. "Terretuga, Grassy Terrain!" Maybe she can do something here? She felt like a sitting Ducklett now.

"Sweetie, Air Cutter."

As the Turtwig made the grass glow and grant healing energy to grounded Pokemon, blades of sharp air rained down on the helpless turtle, sending the turtle back to his trainer, knocked out.

Ramona looked like she was close to crying, eyes getting shiny. She shook her head, returning her Turtwig and sending out her Shinx. "That's it! Radilux, Thunder Shock!"

Aoto let out a scoff. "Sweetie-... Hm?" Aoto watched as the Shinx did not even discharge an iota of electrical energy. Instead, he sat down, defiantly turning his head away.

Ramona was stunned. "Wh-... What...?" She was quiet at first, before suddenly yelling. "Why???"

The Shinx growled at her, trotted back to her feet, and then jumped at her belt. He returned himself.

Aoto started laughing, Sweetie staring at him with an unamused expression. He quickly schooled himself, but couldn't help the big grin on his face. "Wow, ain't that something." He sighed. "So, some of your Pokemon already don't follow your orders, so you went to use the two newest ones who will actually listen to you. But if the new one you just caught isn't even following your orders - especially against an opponent who is at a type disadvantage - I wonder why that is..."

Ramona glared, pointing at him with venom in her tone. "Shut up! You don't know anything about me! It's probably because that Luxio I calmed wasn't even a wild mon, you caught it and had its still wild relative embarrass me like this! This is your fault!"

Aoto sighed, crossing his arms. "Look, you can fight me all you want. I'm just telling you how it is. Your behavior - like right now - is the reason why your Pokemon aren't listening to you. They wouldn't want to follow the commands of an arrogant not-Ranger. A soldier wouldn't want to follow the orders of an arrogant general all the same. It's dangerous, could get them hurt or killed. Even if that captain was intelligent, all that rationale goes out the window when emotions get involved and trust becomes lost."

Ramona hated him, hated how right he was. It resonated with something in her heart and it made her want to dig her hand in her chest and pull it out. "Ugh, I hate you!" She then pointed at him. "From here on, you will become my nemesis! Every time I see you, I will fight you! And next time I fight you, all five of my original Pokemon will agree to fight with me next time!"

"Five? So now six Pokemon don't even listen to you?" He quipped, an amused smirk on his face. He tried to hide it behind his hand but it was too late.

"FUCK OFF!" She roared, before storming off into the direction of Jubilife City, wanting to not have to see the back of this guy's stupid head when she's just trying to get to the next city.

She can hear him scoff as he returned to packing up his things, which only caused her to nearly burst a blood vessel.

But, as she continued to walk and her anger simmered, she realized that... Maybe he was right. Her Pokemon haven't listened to her ever since she got them. An event would happen and they would suddenly stop listening to her. Deep down, she knew it was likely because of what she did, but she blamed the events and those people for making her Pokemon lose heart in their trainer.

But if the Shinx - who she just caught - was unwilling to fight for her... It scared her. Deeply.

Maybe I'm not cut out to be a Pokemon Trainer or a Ranger...

A few hours later, and she finally stepped through Jubilife City's perimeter and walked down the streets in the evening. The event should be joyous, but she held a heavy heart as she continued.

Why...? Why am I like this...?

But no, no, I was and am fine. Everyone else is the problem!

But... How could I get the Pokemon I have to listen to me again?

...

...

For once, the two dichomotic voices were silenced by melancholy. The sounds of the bustling city could barely be heard over Ramona's own woe.

Altair watched as the girl commanded her Sneasel to go in for one final attack, he nodded slightly as the opponents' two Pokemon fell. G was excited, more excited than in Hearthome, and Mt.Cornet. "Not bad, learning a super-effective new move just in time." He nodded to G and replied while waiting for her to come down the initial high. He patted Duraludon's head and commended her for a good job, but his voice was rather dry the whole way through.

"...Oh, right. If you want to." When G suggested letting the two take a photo anyways, Altair didn't think of it much, it seemed like something she would do anyways. He waved his hand for the Rotom phone to hover over before taking the photo. The two trainers seemed content with it, Altair wasn't that confident in his photography skills, but a tourist style photo was simple enough with the Rotom phone's built in auto-focus functions.

He stared off into space for a bit, before noticing Goomy still crawling around the cavern floor. "Oh no Goob Goob...don't eat that..." Altair muttered as he tried to pick up the small Goomy, who seems to be content eating the dirt on the ground, when he heard a voice speaking to him. It was one of the trainers, the one who knew how to speak the local language at least.

"Huh?" He blinked a few times before processing the question as he got up, still holding the Goomy. "Thanks...and...gym circuit, huh?" Altair seemed lost in thought for a bit and sighed gently. "I'm not sure, I'm...well, I won't say I'm over gyms, but...I just don't know, I don't have plans around it." He said, hesitately. "I just came to Sinnoh because I heard about a type of Sliggoo that is immune to poison lived in ancient Sinnoh, to help her. That's all." He lifted the Goomy up to show the other trainer.

"Socials...fine." Altair's Rotom phone hovered up and displayed a screen. "...I'm not very active on it though, not publically at least." On the phone displayed the latest post. It was a reply to an old VOD of the stream of Paldea gym leader, Iono.

Haruto nodded along while his own PorygonPhone took the information in. The trainer didn't think much of the information displayed on Altair's phone. Instead he was more interested in what the white haired trainer had to say. "An evolution for Goomy that makes it immune to poison? Yeah that sounds familiar. Riku knows more about stuff like that." The trainer turned to face the other two. One being G nodding politely while Riku talked his mouth off excitedly. "Yo! Riku! Come over here!"

The trainer apologized to G, at least it seemed like it since he bowed his head a few times and then rushed over to Altair and Haruto. "Tsbetr'eh'ant." Riku said with a rushed tone.

"My man here wants to know about a Goomy that is immune to poison."

Riku looked at Altair for a second before he started to speak. "Ya'na'getoing'n'eedet, eminerls. S'lled... Hisuian." Riku looked at Goomy for a moment and then continued. "Ill'ery'ow'emdodat.I'ckon'dizgool'plz'tatry."

Haruto nodded and turned to Altair. "Yeah even I didn't get every bit of it. Basically, this is a good place for Goomy to get minerals?" He turned to try and ask his friend for more, but he had ran back to G and started blabbering again. "Well, listen. We are going to send the night here. It's pretty normal for trainers to do so. Why don't you two join our camp? This level is basically safe for trainers around our level. But if you plan to venture into the lower ones, we should do it as a team. Just, don't even think about camping down there unless you're like Steven Stone or something."

Riku and G walked over with the streamer girl skipping a step or two and stopping next to Altair. "Hey, I think I understand Riku better now. Turns out he has a really good reason for speaking like that. So, one day he ran into a pack of Chatot that-"

"Hey!" Riku called out, looking red and nervous.

Haruto laughed. "He doesn't like sharing that story. So, what do you say, we exploring the lower levels?"

G's eyes lightened up with interest. "Oh~ That sounds fun. What do you say, best buddy?" She looked up at Altair with a big grin.

The route to Lake Shikotsu was not terribly dangerous; it was close to Route 202 and thus well-within the path of regular ranger patrols. Furthermore, during deep winters, the lake was frequented by festivalgoers attending the Shikotsu Ice Festival. Natheless, Eléonor’s demur persona and social hesitance in no way suggested social ineptitude—perish the thought! She was more than capable of profound insight, more than capable of perceiving the unspoken meaning behind Zera’s words and actions. She believed this was what they called, ‘acting Tsun’.

Eléonor graciously allowed her newest companion’s veil of concern to remain intact.

    “Very well.”
Unlike her former two companions, Eléonor knew not about Zera. She knew not about Ramona or Rincewind either, but comparatively speaking.
“If we are to keep each other in pleasant company, then introductions are the barest minimum!”

“I’m Eléonor, Sinnoh-born. Poké-Stylist and Journalistic Hobbyist. And you?”

Zera listened to Eléonor's introduction and nodded her head. She is coming to the conclusion that this girl was raised in was more of the traditional part of Sinnoh. Can't say Zera herself could tell where it was, but wasn't near where she was raised. Or at least she doesn't recognize her if she was. It would be polite if she introduced herself.

"My name is Zera. I'm also from here in Sinnoh. Pokémon trainer, and in the future I will conquer the Elite Four." It had been some time since she said it out loud and just doing so made her face become a scowl remembering unpleasant things. "So," shaking her head she tries to change the subject. "Why are you heading to the lake? Looking for a water type Pokémon to add to your team?"

Ambition appeared in myriad manners. There were lofty aspirations, fantastical fantasies, delusional delusions, and then whatsoever Zera had the misfortune of being afflicted with. The Elite Four was a mammoth goal; the Sinnoh Elite Four even more so.
    “Best of Luck!”

”Rather the opposite, a water type found its way onto my team and the Lake is the best place for me to give her a workout. I believe it will be less crowded than the Sandgem beach. Afterward, Jubilife is my next destination and from there…who knows.”

3 August, Jubilife City

The evening air in Jubilife City felt crisp as Teddy strolled through the bustling streets, his eyes taking in the lively surroundings. Lumi, his Brionne, bounced happily at his side, occasionally blowing bubbles into the air, while Thorn, his Ferroseed, rolled behind him in his usual steady pace. Cinder, his Charcadet, sat perched on Teddy’s shoulder, his fiery eyes scanning the busy streets.

After a long day of research and exploration, Teddy decided to take a break by a large plaza near the fountain. He found a bench and settled down, pulling out his notebook to jot down observations about the day. Lumi, unable to resist, immediately dove into the fountain, splashing around while Thorn rested quietly next to him. Cinder stayed on Teddy’s shoulder, peering over the notebook.

Teddy let out a content sigh, but a flicker of movement caught his attention. A young woman walked briskly past the fountain, her expression a mix of anger and frustration. Her body language was tense, and there was something off—an air of frustration mixed with something deeper.

He watched her for a moment, noticing the way her shoulders slumped as if she was carrying more than just her anger. Teddy hesitated for a second, then stood up, feeling a sense of concern tug at him. He didn’t want to pry, but something told him she might need a friendly face.

Stepping forward, he offered a small smile. “Hey,” he called out casually, careful not to come off too strong. “You look like you’ve had a rough day. Need a break?” He gestured to the bench nearby, his tone gentle and non-intrusive. He then raised his hands in a friendly gesture. “I’m Teddy, by the way. Just a fellow trainer and researcher. I didn’t mean to intrude, but... you seemed like you’ve been through a lot.” He gave a small smile, hoping to ease her mood. “You’re welcome to sit if you need to talk it out. No pressure.”

Lumi, still playing in the fountain, let out a cheerful bubble that floated toward the woman, as if trying to help break the tension. Cinder remained perched on Teddy’s shoulder, watching silently, while Thorn quietly rolled closer to keep an eye on the situation.

Teddy didn’t say anything more, leaving the offer open, unsure how the woman would react. Sometimes all someone needed was a moment to breathe, and he was willing to offer that.

After the battle, it seems like the trainers that were Sinnoh locals did know something about the Sinnohian Goomy evolution, though he was a bit surprised when the two asked them to stay together. Veteran trainers (self-proclaimed) sometimes had a weird sense of pride, especially when it came to younger opponents.

"...If she agrees, then I do too." Altair nodded at the two trainers before glancing over at G. "It's my responsibility to keep her safe, that's all." He replied rather dryly, though the other two had likely already noticed G was rather new at Pokemon training from the previous battle.

"I'd prefer if we don't get into any overly dangerous situations," Altair's Goomy looked around blankly with its beady eyes, "I left some of my heavy hitting Pokemon at the center to make room for this little one, I'm not as reliable as I could be, but that's the purpose of training grounds, isn't it." He glanced over at the trainer with the Beautifly, a Pokemon notoriously weak to rock moves, along with its steel-weak partner. He wondered if that was part of its training as well.

"As long as you think it's fine. Rollie is still around to help out in a pinch." Altair looked over at G, referencing the utility of Togedemaru's fake out when they have run ins with wild Pokemon that they'd prefer not to face head on, as it was with the Metagross in Mt. Cornet. The Togedemaru in question climbed up its trainer's leg and perched on Altair's shoulder, waving at the others in the cavern.

Huh?

Ears perking up, she looked over to see a young man... She looked on in some confusion, only to listen more to his compassionate words.

No, is this a cruel joke by fate? My newest Pokemon - Shinx - refused to listen to me. What if I make friends with this man and he starts hating me?

No, I don't know that yet.

Continuing to listen, she realized quite quickly he was just a concerned compassionate soul. Her shoulders eased their tension and she turned her walking direction - towards the benches he gestured to. She chuckled as she watched the blue seal blow a bubble at her, which Ramona grabbed, the smile on her face growing as she squeezed the bubble briefly, as if it were a delicate stress ball.

"Thanks... My name's Ramona." The fire that was in her earlier had nearly vanished, but like Ho-Oh's Sacred Flame, it will revive itself in its own ashes.

She sat down on the bench, the bubble popped as she sat down and she chuckled as the water splashed her. Seeing Teddy's Charcadet on his shoulder, she sent out her own. "He's Cabadura."

Cabadura looked around and firstly saw the other Charcadet. He ran up to Teddy, waving an arm in greeting. He seemed pretty excited to meet one of his own outside of Paldea.

Ramona sighed, looking up at the dreary evening sky. Or at least, she thought it looked dreary. "Not sure if I should talk about it yet. But thanks for the offer. I might later. It's just... really fresh and I'd rather not start getting emotional." She tried to give an easy smile, but it was clear she struggled with much more than just the events that happened this day.

But, since Teddy so graciously spoke about his profession, she might as well start with hers. Cabadura gave her a wary look, as if warning her about lying again about her status. She took in a deep breath before starting. "I'm a student Pokemon Ranger from Almia, which is just south of Sinnoh. I was going to graduate, but I wanted to learn more about the world and its people and Pokemon. So I'm doing the gym circuit here in Sinnoh. Maybe I'll compete in the contest too." She chuckled, though her chuckle sounded rather dry. "Why are you running around exploring? For research or got an itch?" She gave a light-hearted question, an easy playful smirk curling her lip.

Maybe... Maybe today won't be so bad.

3 August, Jubilife City

Teddy watched as the tension in Ramona’s shoulders eased and she walked over to the bench. He smiled when she caught the bubble from Lumi, her smile growing as she playfully squeezed it. It seemed like she was feeling better already.

"Nice to meet you, Ramona," Teddy said as she introduced herself. His gaze shifted when she sent out her own Charcadet, Cabadura. The small fire-type sprinted over to Cinder, waving enthusiastically. Cinder blinked in surprise but quickly waved back, his usual quiet and serious demeanor brightening up as he seemed genuinely pleased to meet another Charcadet. “This is Cinder,” The boy introduced his own Charcadet.

When Ramona mentioned she wasn’t ready to talk about what was weighing on her, Teddy nodded with understanding. "No worries, just take your time and calm down for now I guess." He could tell something was bothering her deeply, but he respected that she wasn’t ready to open up yet.

As she introduced herself as a Pokémon Ranger in training, Teddy nodded thoughtfully. “Wow, a Pokémon Ranger? That’s no small feat. Sounds like you’ve been on quite the journey already.”

He also noticed the dry tone in her chuckle, but he didn’t pry. Instead, when she asked about his own journey, Teddy’s smile widened as he leaned back a little on the bench, stretching out his legs. “Well, it’s kind of a long story,” he began, chuckling lightly. “I’ve been researching Pokémon behavior and ecosystems for a while now. It’s interesting work, but after spending so much time in the lab, pouring over data, it started to feel a bit... monotonous. Then one day, I watched a live Pokémon tournament on TV, and it hit me—why not try battling myself?”

He grinned at the thought, excitement flickering in his eyes. “If I’m any good at it, maybe I could even become a full-time trainer. You know, get out of the lab, see the world. I pitched the idea to my professor, saying the battles could help further my research, and he agreed to it.”

He glanced up at the sky, which had started to take on deeper shades of purple and pink as the sun set. “As for why I’m in Sinnoh… well, I decided to give the gym circuit here a shot for a start. Although I haven’t taken on any gyms yet, it’s definitely on my to-do list. Plus, it gives me a chance to see how trainers bond with their Pokémon in battle—something you don’t fully get from books or data.”

As Lumi continued to splash happily in the fountain and Thorn rested quietly nearby, Teddy glanced back at Ramona, his expression thoughtful. “You know, if you’re up for it, maybe we could tackle the gym circuit together,” he suggested. “I’m still a beginner when it comes to battling, but I bet I could learn a lot from someone like you.”

'Was this just fate bringing me up after smacking me down?'

'No... Maybe my own actions did this... Fate's just being merciful.'

Ramona watched as the two Charcadet greeted each other. After being so far from home, Cabadura finally found a friend from his home. Cabadura hopped up, grabbing the edge of the bench to stand on it and speak in squeaks, his flames crackling as he vocalized. In fact, it sounded as if he was using the crackling of his flames to vocalize in Pokespeak. "No way, how did you get here? How are you doing? I'm so glad to meet my own kind, the homesickness is crazy."

Ramona didn't realize just how complex the Charcadet language was... For some reason, she felt like she truly didn't know her Pokemon. Sure, she knew what Charcadet's type was, his ability, his weaknesses, his moves, how to take care of him, and some of his likes and dislikes...

But, she didn't understand who he was. It made something in her chest stir uncomfortably.

She probably had quite the constipated look on her face staring at how happy her Charcadet was, so she stopped and just focused on what Teddy was saying. It was nice to hear that someone sounded excited about her profession. She looked away when the specific phrase 'been on quite the journey already' reached her ears.

"Yeah, quite the journey." She gave a dry chuckle.

She listened to Teddy speak about his ambitions. It was weird, sitting down and listening to someone and not having others listen to her. Had she been missing out on something?

Humming, Ramona nodded as he spoke about what he researched, expressing his want to get some excitement... It sort of sounded similar. Not only did she want to learn from her journey to be a better Pokemon Ranger, but he wanted to go on a journey to understand his research better.

"Yeah, I've been told that some things written on paper and then put into practice gives a different result than what's expected." She looked up at the sky with him, her eyes able to see the colorful hues of the clouds. So, if Teddy journeyed with her, he'd learn from her...

And she could get advice... Well, when she was open to it.

This isn't an escort like she had taken to doing with the other people - just simply walking with them to the same direction. Now, she had the chance to have a travel companion. Seeing how happy her Charcadet was, it would be remiss of her to not take this opportunity.

She looked back at Teddy, smiling wide. "It gets kinda lonely journeying on your own. Sure, I have my Pokemon, but - as my Cabadura's reaction to your Cinder proves - having someone of our kind to travel with does make us feel better." She then cleared her throat, scratching the back of her head. "I uh... I just know about how battles, abilities, and moves should work. I'm still doing this for training on how it actually works in practice. So, looks like we're learning as we go."

Ahead, she saw an ad for a contest in two days. She recalled seeing it earlier on her journey through Route 202. She smiled, feeling a bit better about her chances. "There's a Jubilife City Contest happening in a couple days. I'm gonna compete in it. Do you know how to make moves look stylish? I mean, if not, then we can definitely figure it out!"

Cabadura had actually paused on his conversation with Cinder to look at Ramona with a surprised look. There's his trainer, looking more revitalized than she was minutes earlier. The fire in her eyes present. He looked back at Cinder, making chuckling squeaking noises. "Seems like your trainer is fuel for my trainer's ambitions." To the culture of a Charcadet - or at least Cabadura's culture - that was a compliment. It meant they worked well together as companions. "I can't wait to watch their flames grow."

But honestly? Seeing her accept a travel partner? Her opening up and actually being not only truthful with a stranger but herself? Even going so far as to request teamwork? He couldn't be more proud. While he still won't fight for her, he was sure that her Turtwig will help her in the contest.

Cinder responded firmly to Cabadura: “I’m doing just fine. I grew up in the lab, but now I’m here because my trainer’s on a mission, and I’m sticking with him every step of the way to make sure he doesn’t slack off—not even for a second. No time for homesickness when there’s work to do.” Cinder’s flames flickered confidently as he spoke, clearly proud of his purpose.

Meanwhile, Teddy felt a sense of relief as he noticed Ramona calming down. Sharing his story seemed to have helped ease the tension, and it made him happy to know his words had an impact. Though she hadn’t shared much about her own journey yet, Teddy was curious. If she’d been through "quite the journey" as she’d hinted, it must have been a thrilling one.

When she mentioned her experience with battles and strategies, but her need for more real-world practice, Teddy nodded in understanding. “You’re not alone there,” he said, offering her a reassuring smile. “I’ve studied how battles should go in theory, but once you’re actually in the heat of it... everything can go out the window. Guess that’s part of the fun, though, right? Learning by doing.”

He caught her glance toward the ad for the upcoming Jubilife City Contest, and he nodded his head as she mentioned competing in it. “A contest, huh? That sounds like it could be fun. Honestly, I haven’t thought too much about making moves look stylish, but I’m sure we’ll figure something out.” Teddy mused to himself. “When in doubt, it’s always good to take inspiration from the experts. Maybe we can learn more about contests if we can find someone who's an expert in the field.”

Cinder, listening to Cabadura’s comment about how their trainers worked well together, puffed up with pride, his flames burning brighter. “That’s good to hear,” he replied to Cabadura. “Teddy may be a rookie, but he’s got heart, no doubt about that. And it’s up to us to keep our trainers’ fire burning strong, backing them up every step of the way.”

Teddy stood up, stretching his arms with renewed energy. “So, it’s settled then. We’ll figure out how you can win that contest, then we’ll beat all the gyms in Sinnoh and become pokemon champions together! It’s not gonna be easy, but I think we’ll make an unstoppable team.” He looked back at Ramona, laughing to himself about his genius plan, which may or may not have skipped some major steps.

But just then, something struck him. “Oh, right! I still need to catch some local Pokémon for my research,” he groaned, as if suddenly remembering one of his original goals. He scratched the back of his head sheepishly. “Guess I got a little carried away.”

Lumi, who had been playing happily in the fountain, paused and twirled, sending a playful spray of water in Teddy’s direction. She chirped cheerfully, clearly enjoying herself. “Alright, Lumi, we’ll move soon,” Teddy laughed, wiping a few droplets off his face. Thorn, who had been quietly observing everything from a distance, made a subtle movement, rolling a bit closer as if to signal he was ready to go.

Teddy looked back at Ramona. “Well then, since it’s getting late, shall we get going?”

Cabadura liked the steadfastness in Cinder. While it was a bit disappointing to hear that Cinder wasn't from the wilds of Paldea, that was fine. He was just glad to see another of his kind.

To know she wasn't the only one needing experience made Ramona feel good about herself. Maybe it's not so bad to feel like she didn't know as much. The more she shared, the more Teddy supported her or understood her. It was such a freeing feeling, one that she barely had before.

Maybe...

Yes, I should.

While the thought of learning from others was a nice thought, it only led her to think about Eleonor. That bystander of a princess seemed like she had some contest ideas up her sleeves, but she really didn't want to learn from her.

Cabadura let loose a bright flickering flame, the flame coating bits of his body, as he agreed with Cinder's proud statement. However, it also reminded him of how he wasn't doing that. How could he make Ramona see her actions as wrong without it getting so far...?

He'll find a way, he was sure of it.

Meanwhile, Ramona chuckled at Teddy's energy. Being a Pokemon Champion? That was quite farfetched, but she wasn't about to rain on his parade. She just nodded along, giggling at his boisterous laugh. The tone changed to what he needed to do, and she smiled, also giggling at Lumi's antics. "Oh, well, I'll go with you then. I know a thing or two about Pokemon from the Ranger Academy, too." She softly boasted, feeling like she might actually prove helpful here.

Then a thought struck her. "Where we going?" She chuckled. "If you're thinking about getting an Abra near here, I'm sorry, I don't think I'll be able to help with that." She laughed, more so because trying to catch an Abra was an effort in futility and she's seen many videos of experienced Rangers being unable to capture an Abra - or any Pokemon with Teleport - with their Capture Styler.

Cabadura ran back to Ramona's heel, getting ready to go, as well.

"Okay, now...let's try to use tackle."

There was a small spikey Pokemon sitting on the ground, half buried in the loam soil of the Sinnoh route. It has been a few days since G departed for the Alola contest circuit, so for the first time in a while, Altair was rather free to do what he wanted. Being in the area that is known for being more easily traversable for newer trainers, he decided to get some training in with his newer team members. Well, "newer" was a stretch, as the Ferroseed sitting in front of him has been around since his student days, but never really progressed as a Pokemon. Altair have noticed its penchant to ignore any commands in battle, but only those that required offensive moves.

The Ferroseed sat completely still.

"It's okay, just a little nudge would be fine too." The trainer approached the spikey ball slowly, trying to pet its metallic exterior while pointing to a stray Bidoof cluelessly sitting on a patch of grass. Altair never expected the Pokemon to actually land an attack, but even attempting one would be a big step forward.

"...How about...metal claw?"

The Ferroseed sat completely still.

Altair sighed, and looked at the Pokemon again. "Try flash cannon? If you don't want to move. Goob goob and Psi can teach you." The Sliggoo poked her head out of her newly acquired shell, while the Klefki that hovered around his shoulder jingled his keys.

The Ferroseed still sat completely still.

"Alright then...let's just try this another time." The trainer seemed a bit dejected, but stretched his arms a bit before pulling out a Pokeball to return the grass-steel type. "At least he didn't-"

The Ferroseed shuddered a little and began to glow.

"Ack! He's doing it- Prot-"

Before Altair could finish giving the command, Sliggoo already retreated into her shell and covered herself in the light green barrier of protect, Klefki did the same while hopping in front of his trainer, using the move at an even faster speed thanks to its prankster ability. Altair fell back a few steps onto the ground as he watched the Ferroseed use explosion, scattering the Bidoof and Starly around the patch of grass. It wasn't the first time this had happened, in fact, it happened almost every time they tried to train, to the point where the rest of his team (and himself) basically expected this outcome.

Altair stepped up and picked up the now exhausted Ferroseed. "Goob goob, life dew please." He asked the Sliggoo melancholically before sighing again. "I really hope that didn't scare anyone...I heard this place has a lot of new trainers around..."

3 August, Jubilife City

“Alright, time to rest up, you two,” Teddy said as he returned Lumi and Thorn to their Pokéballs. The energy in Jubilife’s evening air was relaxing, but he knew it was about time to move on.

He grinned when Ramona offered to join him. “I’ll be counting on you then, partner,” he replied. Ramona’s experience at the Ranger Academy would definitely come in handy, especially since they’d likely encounter all sorts of Pokémon along the way.

When she mentioned Abra, Teddy chuckled. “Abra, huh? I was thinking more along the lines of Starly. Still though, if we do run into an Abra, it could be fun challenge to see if we can actually catch one. They’re elusive, though.” He laughed, recalling how even the professor struggled to catch the ever-teleporting psychic Pokémon.

As they made their way toward Route 203, the peaceful walk was suddenly interrupted by a loud explosion in the distance, making Teddy jump. “Whoa! What the—?!” His heart raced as he instinctively turned toward the source of the noise. Without thinking, he broke into a run, motioning for Ramona to follow. “Let’s go check it out!”

When he reached the scene, he saw a white-haired trainer holding a Ferroseed in his arms, looking a bit dazed but seemingly unharmed. The patch of grass around him was scattered with startled Bidoof and Starly, no doubt fleeing from whatever had caused the explosion.

Teddy skidded to a halt, catching his breath as he approached the trainer. “Are you guys alright?” he asked worriedly. He glanced at the Ferroseed, now looking exhausted in the trainer’s arms, and noticed the telltale signs of an Explosion attack. “That was some serious power... what happened?”

June 24th, Iron Island.

And so the training began. The team of four began their descend down the famous mines in Iron Island. The battles on the way down were easy to get by. G stood by her mentor Altair while the other two lead the charge. When it came to fighting a horde of two, G would jump in to assist. But mostly she watched and tried to learn from her new team. Her Psyduck was ignoring some of her instructions, but kept stacking up the knock outs. Finally, they reached what was known as the lowest level of the mine.

In such place they had to follow the path set up by previous miners and trainers. It was strongly recommended to do so, since beyond that, it was territory to the wild Pokemon. G was still excited and confident having such strong trainers around her. Altair was doing great like always. Meanwhile Riku had taken out a Medicham to adventure with and Haruto was using a Kantonian Sandslash.

"Wow it's a lot darker here." G shone her light towards the outsides of the path, barely getting to make out anything around them. "It's also a lot hotter. Probably because we are really really underground. How are you holding up, Altair?" The streamer playfully bumped into her traveling partner. "I'm starting to understand Riku a bit better. He says some interesting things sometimes. At least, I think he says them. They have really cool Pokemon, I wonder if I can catch-"

Rumble! Rumble!

The chamber seemed to shake a bit as dust and pebbles fell around them. G quickly stepped behind Altair, with her Snom hanging on tightly to her shoulder while her Psyduck looked wildly around, probably seeking the opponent. "This place should be safe right?" The coordinator looked around behind her.

Rumble Rumble! Rumble Rumble!

"Those sounds like... steps?" G looked ahead, watching as Haruto and Riku ran back to them and then looked ahead. "Did you see something?"

Haruto held up a finger to his lips, asking them to be quiet. "Something's here..."

"Oh my Arceus..." G pointed beyond the two veteran trainers. "Altair look... we found a-"

"Stlex!" Riku cried out!

Altair walked alongside the group as he tried to keep Goomy on track, the small dragon pokemon seems to be trying to eat the dirt in the mines constantly. Eventually, the trainer half gave up on stopping the Goomy from eating the dirt. As they ventured deeper, the two trainers that he and G met pulled out some other Pokemon, those that could more easily deal with the rock and steel types that lived in the cavern.

The ground began to shake slightly, although Altair usually didn't think much of slight tremours within caves like this, as the migration and movement of wild Pokemon often caused these vibrations, G's reaction did get him to look around a bit more. It wasn't for nothing, as the rumbles grew stronger, something emerged in the distance.

With both G and the two other trainers crying out, Altair looked at the large Pokemon that just caused the rumbles. The Steelix seemed to be charging through the old tunnels they had been walking through, which means it was likely coming right at them, at a rather incredible pace as well. Why was it so fast? Altair tried to take a better look at the Pokemon's movements, but the dark environment caused some trouble. Though he managed to catch that the metallic exterior of the Steelix shimmered with some sort of light.

"Mobi! Ally Switch!" Altair tossed out a Pokeball, and out emerged the abnormally large Dhelmise. With a whirl, the ghost type teleported a head of Altair and G, switching places with one of the Pokemon of the veteran trainers. "Stop that thing! Anchor Shot!" The ghost type launched its steel anchor towards the Steelix, and wrapped the chains around the long Pokemon tightly. Although it did seem to hinder the wild Pokemon's mobility, the smooth shimmering surface still allowed the Steelix to begin charging up attacks despite the hindrance.

"Ah shi-" Altair muttered as he finally recognized that the Steelix had used Rock Polish to travel through the cavern quicker, similar to the Alpha Metagross they've encountered in Mt.Cornet.

The Steelix began to rumble and tumble around, using the move Bulldoze to shake the surroundings rapidly, trying to also hinder the movement of the human trainers and Pokemon it has ran into. "Watch where you step!" He grabbed G's arm and looked at the Snom on her shoulder. "Return that- You don't want it to get hit by-" The Steelix, after shaking the ground with a Bulldoze, began to shake the cavern and causing rocks to fall from above, using the rock type move rock slide.
