"P'er'p'ch" Riku called out with his advanced dialogue, pointing at the rocks coming down on the team. His Medicham sprung into action, powering up her fists and slamming each stone one by one.

"Rock Smash!" Haruto followed up, helping with the rest of the boulders being a menace to them. The Sandslash crush the remaining boulders with ease.

At the same time, Bananan the Psyduck had sprung into action. He ran to the side of the giant anchor and starting shooting Water Pulse at the opponent. "Puddin?" G tried to follow up with Altair's question, stumbling to the side but staying on her feet thanks to her grip on her mentor's arm. She reached into the side pocket of her backpack, pulling out a Poke Ball to return the small innocent bug ice Pokemon. But then,

Quake Quake!

Another Bulldoze attack from the giant Steelix. G not only stumbled and fell on her bottom, but the Poke Ball rolled away into the darkness of the mine. She quickly snatched Snom from her shoulder and into her arms, checking that Altair hadn't noticed. "Banana keep up the good work!" The Sinnoh local shouted as she scurried back to her feet. "Let's focus on the battle, Puddin is fine!"

Medicham and Sandslash landed next to Dhelmise and preapred to support the team on attacking the Steelix.

Watching as Teddy returned his Brionne and Ferroseed, Ramona chuckled at the idea of being that helpful, a slight pink tint on her tanned skin. It really did stroke her ego, but not in a way that made her behavioral traits worse. She chuckled along with Teddy's laughter regarding Abra, but having a reliable and strong bird was just as great.

Ramona walked with Teddy towards Route 203 with her Charcadet at her heel, only to freeze up when she heard and felt the effect of an explosion. She ran before she had heard Teddy, her mind following one track as she thought of the worse thing ever. Either there was a bomb enthusiast, a terrorist, or-

Well, when she arrived, her one-track thought process got immediately derailed. There was a grown man, tenderly holding his Ferroseed as it was being healed by his ... strange looking Sliggoo? What even was that?

Ramona glared at Altair, thinking he had done something for his Ferroseed to just blow up like that. "If someone hadn't noticed, especially since this place has got newer trainers, they could've gotten seriously hurt! You're lucky nobody else was nearby!" Her harsh tone belied her concern. Taking a deep breath, she tried to mirror Teddy's more compassionate tone, but sounding more weary in the process. "Yeah, what happened? Your Ferroseed got spooked or something?" She at least knew it was the Ferroseed, there was no debris from an actual bomb, so it had to have come from the Ferroseed.

"Are you sure!?" Altair felt the weight of G's stumble as the group was hit by Bulldoze and Rock Slide, he wanted to ask the girl whether she wanted to just retreat like they did back in Mt.Cornet, but seeing her attitude, and the fact that there were two other trainers with them, Altair doubt that was what she was going to chose this time.

"That's a big one, but..." There were four trainers here, Altair remembered that was the recommended party size for taking on certain strong Pokemon was four, at least that's what he was taught back in school.

The giant Steelix began to curl up its body as Dhelmise was forced to retract its anchor after using the move, the chains binding the Steelix faded. Soon the latter half of the serpentine Pokemon's body began to glow as the Steelix raised its tail, the light indicating a large-sized Iron Tail coming down on the cavern.

"Mobi! Power whip!" Altair shouted for his large sized Pokemon to counter with their own move. The anchor Pokemon, this time revved up its plant-like tendrils and clashed with the steely tail of the Steelix. He looked back to make sure G was okay, and noticed that she was still holding her Snom. "I thought I said-" He wanted to comment on why the girl didn't return her weakest team member, but then quickly noticed that something was missing from around him as well.

"Ah, where'd she go-" Altair muttered as he noticed that Goomy was gone, a slight bit of cold sweat dripped from his forehead. Goomys are squishy right? They won't get easily squished by rocks right? The trainer shook his head quicky to try to gather his thoughts, before seeing the gumdrop-like Pokemon wobbling in the distance, trying to eat some of the shattered rocks from the Steelix's attacks. He sighed a breath of relief before tossing out another Pokemon.

"Go grab Goob Goob." The trainer ordered as Empoleon emerged from the Pokeball, charging at the Goomy.

Just then, the Steelix moved once again, similar to the Bulldoze from a few seconds ago, this quake was much stronger, and radiated out from the entire cavern, sending the few smaller wild Pokemon that remained scurrying away. It was a veritable Earthquake now.

As Silggoo dripped some mystical water around and onto the Ferroseed, Altair caressed the spikey Pokemon with his gloved hands (he wore them specifically for this training session). The trainer sighed again. "...What am I gonna do with you......" He spoke barely audibly to the Ferroseed. It has been years since he graduated, years since he left Paldea where he was given this Ferroseed as a "rare Pokemon", but it's brought him nothing but trouble and worry for so long. He didn't blame the person who gave it away.

Then he heard the rustling of footsteps through the tall grass, of course, that would've attracted some people. There usually are trainers on this route doing training after all, he's heard that there's a trainer's school in Jubilife too...He looked over to see two people, a bespecled young man with black hair and a reddish brown-haired girl with yellow highlights. The glasses wearing boy seemed rather concerned...about him, while the girl was more concerned about the route it seems. The girl seemed like a more experienced trainer, from the fact that she is able to identify that Ferroseed likely have exploded.

"Uh...I'm just here to...train my Pokemon." On the patch of grass nearby sat Sliggoo, and beside Altair floated Klefki. "...Well, mostly it's training my Ferroseed." He looked down at the seed Pokemon in his arms. "He has some sort of...condition, I think. I been training him for years, or trying to train him for years, but he barely reacts to any commands, and sometimes...this happens." Altair explained glumly, referring to the explosion that just happened.

"Don't worry though, I got it under control. This happens quite often, so we're all prepared for it." Both Klefki and Sliggoo showed the two newcomers a light green barrier, the barrier of protect, displaying their defensive abilities as Altair explained how this was actually a common occurrence for him. But after a few moments he simply sighed, realizing he was probably in the wrong for using an area where new trainers gather when he knew his Pokemon had a tendency to do...this. "Sorry if I scared you guys, but I promise it's fine...Oh, wait. Did I scare away a Pokemon you want to catch? Anything like that?" Altair rubbed his temples and asked, looking rather exhausted both physically and mentally.

Teddy hummed to himself, intrigued by the odd coincidence that two trainers today had Pokémon similar to his. First, it was Ramona with her Charcadet, and now this white-haired trainer had a Ferroseed too. Was it fate, or were the Pokémon he’d gotten from the professor just that popular? What stood out even more, though, was the unusual Sliggoo beside the trainer—Teddy’s research-focused mind recognized it as a Hisuian variant after pondering on it for a bit. And then there was the Klefki nearby too. All of them are steel types… could this trainer be a Steel-type specialist perhaps?

That was when Ramona gave the trainer a good scolding. Her words made sense—if this explosion had happened near less experienced trainers, things could have turned dangerous fast. But when he glanced at the trainer’s tired expression, Teddy decided not to push things further.

Hearing Ramona pinpoint Ferroseed as the culprit, Teddy’s eyes shifted to the Pokémon in the trainer’s arms. Explosion, he thought, piecing the scenario together. Ferroseed was known to use this technique, but typically only in dire situations—because it knocked them out cold afterward, it wasn’t a move used lightly. The trainer himself looked worn down too, as though he’d been dealing with this problem for a while.

Altair’s explanation confirmed Teddy’s suspicions: this wasn’t a one-time occurrence. Hearing what Altair had to say, Teddy opened his mouth to speak. “Not to worry, we just got here, but more importantly, it sounds like this isn’t as under control as you think,” he said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. His researcher instincts were just starting to kick in now. “If your Ferroseed is using Explosion unpredictably, without responding to commands, there’s definitely something deeper at play. We ought to figure out the root cause of the problem.”

He studied the Ferroseed, and looked back at Altair. “There could be a psychological issue—maybe stress from being forced to train, or something from its past triggering this reaction. Or maybe even a physical condition we haven’t identified yet.” Teddy’s eyes lit up slightly at the thought of diving into a mystery. “I’d love to help, if you’re open to it.”

Teddy offered Altair a reassuring smile. “I’ve got a Ferroseed myself, and I’ve done a fair bit of research into Pokémon behavior. Maybe together, we can figure out what’s causing your Ferroseed's erratic behaviour and fix it once and for all.”

"Banana!" G cried out as she held on to Altair for her life at the shockwaves of the Earthquake. Her Psyduck stumbled from side to side until he fell over, knocked out. "Return!" G used her free hand to bring out the Poke Ball for her water duck Pokemon and returned him. She watched as the other trainers managed to put up a protective barrier or simply took the attack. Her Sneasel was tired from training before, Puddin was in no condition to fight something like that, which meant her only option left was...

"Vanilla!" G tossed the Premier Ball into the air and out popped the white snow Vulpix. "Let's help them, Icy Wind!"

The artic fox ran over to take her spot next to her teammates, gathering energy before letting out the biggest Icy Wind she had ever done. "Can we use Mobi to avoid those ground attacks? My team can't take another one." G asked her mentor, figuiring if her Vulpix wasn't on the ground, she would be okay.

Ramona glared at the white-haired man as he said his piece. Soon, her anger melted into one of concern. If training his Ferroseed causes these explosions, they really needed to be in a safer area.

But she didn't want to miss the forest for the trees. This condition Altair spoke of had her concerned for the Ferroseed. Just what sort of thing caused this Ferroseed to not use any other moves aside from Explosion or Self-Destruct? And for it to go on for this long for years and have nothing help with no deviations?

She sighed, releasing the rest of her frustrations. At least the floating key and the strange dragon-slug thing could use Protect. But man, he looked as exhausted as Ramona felt earlier. She gave an easy smile. "It's okay. Glad you guys were prepared. From the blast, I could tell that the actually life-threatening wave of this explosion didn't get too far."

As Teddy went through the possible options of what Ferroseed's problem could be, Ramona listened quietly, looking around just in case a stronger Pokemon decided to get curious and find out who was it that caused the explosion.

Ramona then smiled as she spoke to Teddy. "Hey, why don't you show your Ferroseed to this guy's Ferroseed? See what happens? Oh," She then turned to Altair. "And what's your name, man? I'm Ramona, a student Pokemon Ranger. This is Teddy." Her Charcadet looked up at her, concern written on his features. What if they got a negative reaction and the Ferroseed goes to explode again?

At least then, it would give some sort of an answer.

"Mobi's not an 'actual levitating Pokemon', they can't completely avoid damage from those moves!" Altair shouted as more of the cavern crumbled. Although Dhelmises did hover above the ground slightly and are capable of moving in such ways on land, their levitation is not a strong or natural enough to completely avoid ground type attacks. Altair sent them out due to their grass typing resisting ground type moves, and being able to strike more effective attacks.

"I'll try to keep it from moving though." He quickly replied again. "Mobi, grass knot it up!"

After being hit by icy wind, the large Pokemon have begun to show signs of sluggish movements. The Dhelmise's tendrils reached out to form looplets in the ground, causing the Steelix to fumble its movements as it tried to use more ground shaking attacks. "You're right though, it's best if we don't let it attack more...but- Shit!" Altair whipped his head around to search for something, as he remembered that he had two other Pokemon out while he was busy commanding the Dhelmise to hinder the Steelix.

But in the corner, a light green barrier slowly dissolved, revealing the Goomy and Empoleon, who would be hit by the super effective ground-type moves, within. "Phew...good thing she at least knows protect......" Altair sighed a breath of relief before muttering and then shouting to the two Pokemon. "Aska, flip turn! Get back here with her!" He commanded the the water type to return with Goomy. The penguin Pokemon nodded and attempted to pick up the gumdrop-shaped dragon, but was stopped as a harsh bright light began to come off of the Goomy.

"Wait, I-I think she's doing it!" Altair watched the small Pokemon slowly morph and stretch out its form, eventually rounding into flat circular shape, as Goomy, now Sliggoo awakened, peering out of the shell at the Steelix. When the light has just completely faded from its body, the Sliggoo summoned a ball of liquidy energy in front of its newly acquired shell, and launched the Muddy Water attack at Steelix.

The water washed against the iron serpent's body, and dulling the metallic exterior, including the large Pokemon's eyes. Altair's attention being forced back into the battle at hand. "Hey guys, don't let up the attacks! Maybe we can finish this soon!" He exclaimed at G, as well as the other trainers present.

Altair looked up at the two new arrivals, the young man seemed rather calm and collected, as he was before, the woman at least have cooled off a bit and less prepared to turn him in to the police or rangers ASAP. He looked down at Ferroseed, who's eyes were quite unmoving as he listened to the bespectacled man, who also introduced himself as a Pokemon researcher speak. He sighed and sat down on the nearby fallen log where Togedemaru and Pawniard sat around as well. "I'm Altair, I'm...your average trainer, I suppose that's all I am." He sighed while looking a bit lost in thought.

"Well, I know there's a problem, it's just that I haven't been able to figure out what." He looked up at the researcher while pulling out a small jar of polish, dipped a handkerchief into it and began to polish off the scorch marks on Ferroseed. "I've known a few studious types, I'm a graduate of Mesagoza Academy...in fact, that's where I got him, from an old peer there who also didn't know much about...anything. Ferroseeds aren't native to Paldea, or at the very least, they're quite unusual there, so no one back there really provided me with any useful information." He continued while wiping off the final burnt marks on the surface of the Ferroseed and putting him down on the ground, the seed Pokemon instantly burrowed to bury itself half into the loamy soil.

Togedemaru jumped onto its trainer's lap, Altair's eye twitched a bit as it happened, one could almost hear the sound of bones cracking in the air. But he quickly regained his former composer and began to polish the electric rodent's tail as well. "I did go back to Unova, oh right, I was born there, since they're native around there. I asked around the usual places...well, except the fancy academy, that underwater one, I graduated already then and I missed the exchange program thing." He paused a bit as he realized he's getting off track. "I digress, but the point is that the Unova labs told me there's nothing physically wrong with him, compared to other Ferroseeds at least. I think it might be a psychological thing, I been trying to just...treat him nicely, and my other Pokemon are trying their best too," Altair glanced at the Sliggoo, who was slathering more Life Dew water on the Ferroseed's polished body. "...But I think I'm starting to accept that it's not something I can fix with just that."

3 August, Jubilife City

Teddy listened closely as Altair explained the situation, noting the fatigue in the trainer’s voice and the careful way he polished his Ferroseed’s scorch marks. It was obvious Altair cared deeply for his Pokémon, but he seemed worn down by the lack of progress in finding a solution. Teddy felt a pang of sympathy—it had to be frustrating, running out of answers when you’ve already tried so much.

“Altair, huh? Nice to meet you,” Teddy replied. As Altair continued, explaining the lengths he’d gone to in trying to diagnose the problem, Teddy nodded attentively. “Sounds like you’ve really done your homework,” he said. “You went all the way back to Unova and consulted labs there... It’s no surprise they couldn’t find anything physically wrong, though. Ferroseed are pretty resilient, but given what you’ve described, this does sound like something psychological.”

When Ramona suggested introducing Thorn to Altair’s Ferroseed, Teddy smiled, nodding at the idea. “Good thinking Ramona,” he said. “Let’s see if Thorn can offer us any clues.”

He reached for his Pokéball and sent out his own Ferroseed, Thorn. The moment Thorn emerged, he calmly assessed the scene before him. He noticed Altair’s Ferroseed, partially burrowed into the soil, and with a quiet curiosity, rolled forward to investigate.

“This is Thorn,” Teddy introduced his Pokémon as Thorn slowly approached Altair’s Ferroseed, showing no signs of aggression, just cautious interest.

As Thorn moved closer to Altair’s Ferroseed, Cinder watched the interaction intently. He then stepped closer to Teddy’s side, his flames flickering as he eyed the two Ferroseed carefully. He was on high alert, ready to intervene if the situation turned dangerous. His gaze flickered toward Ramona’s Charcadet, exchanging a worried glance with him.

Teddy, noticing Cinder’s reaction, chuckled softly and gave him a reassuring pat. “It’s alright, Cinder. Let’s give them a chance.”

He then crouched down, observing the interaction between the two Pokémon, stroking his chin in thought. “If there’s no physical issue, like you said, it’s probably something deeper. Pokémon can react to stress, or even trauma, in ways we don’t always expect. It could be something that happened early on—maybe even something from its days back in Unova.”

Ramona was unsure if she was feeling pity or sympathy, but the way Altair looked so tired and yet - despite looking burnt out to high heaven and hell - he still took care of his Ferroseed. It was oddly sweet, even if it concerned her more to see him in such a state.

Honestly, Altair looked a lot like her own father, worried stiff and his hairs greying worrying about his only child as she ran out to handle the world, hoping she didn't get hurt like in that forest last time.

More of Altair's Pokemon became apparent. The strange looking Sliggoo thing, a Pawniard, a Togedemaru, and the Klefki and Ferroseed. She expected him to have a sixth Pokemon with him, as well. For as beat down as the guy looked, his Pokemon did look a pretty strong.

She listened as Altair said his story about the Ferroseed, and then the ideas Teddy had about what could be the problem. She remember Mesagoza Academy, and her eyes widened at the prospect that he was taught in Paldea. She actually got excited. "Wait wait, you went to Mesagoza Academy? My dad's worked there-..." She cleared her throat and schooled herself. "Heh, s-sorry."

She focused on watching Altair clean the Togedemaru's tail, humming. He was likely talking about BB Academy. She had a choice to go there instead of go on this Sinnoh journey, but decided against it.

Refocusing, she smiled as Teddy praised her for her thinking skills, and she watched on curiously to see how Altair's Ferroseed would respond. "My thinking is, if it has something to do with his own kind, we might see an unusual response."

Her own Charcadet was worried as well, but he was quite sure nothing bad will happen. Though, Ramona's body was instinctually on the ready, just in case, even if there were a couple Pokemon here with the move Protect on standby. "Oh, that place you were talking about earlier in Unova is called the BB Academy. They have Tera stuff there like they do in Paldea. I don't know how, I just know it from the info blurb I was given when I was given a choice to exchange to a different school. Instead, I chose Sinnoh's gym circuit." She chuckled.

"Yeah......"
Altair looked at Teddy, then Ferroseed. "I'm not a Pokemon psychologist, but I've had my share of experience dealing with related issues." He nodded towards the Hisuian Sliggoo curled up at his feet. "She fell into sewage as a Goomy, and became terrified of poison because of that. I brought her to Sinnoh so she can evolve into the ancient Sinnoh, or whatever it was called's, form that's immune to poison."

When Teddy's Ferroseed was let out, Altair stared at the other Ferroseed, it was slightly smaller than his. "This is Alkengi, we just call him Alki though." He introduced his Ferroseed, seemingly being completely unaware of the fact that he gives nicknames of nicknames to his Pokemon. "Oh yeah, he's...not from Unova, I know that's where Ferroseed and Ferrothorn are mostly from, but he's from...Paldea, actually." The Ferrothorn in question stared into Thorn's eyes silently, before quickly spinning around and began burrowing into the ground further. When the Carcadets near Teddy and Ramona made a move, it began to rotate even faster, until it was almost completely buried by the soil.

Klefki and Togedemaru both gazed at the Carcadet with somewhat angry expressions, and both hopped or levitated ahead to separate the mostly buried Ferroseed from the two fire type Pokemon. Sliggoo looked on quietly, but one could notice what seemed to be balls of water energy forming near its body. Togedemaru had electric sparks flying off its tail, seemingly completely unafraid of the type disadvantage. Altair quickly petted the back of the round rodent and gestured for the floating key ring and shelled dragon type to return to his side. "Now now, they're not attacking us or anything..." He sighed while shaking his head slowly. "Alki doesn't do well with fire types, I think the reason is rather obvious, haha." Altair tried to laugh it off awkwardly, referring to the Ferrothorn family's extreme weakness to fire despite their usual resistance.

"Right, BB Academy, I think that's the...abbreviation at least. They invited all the champion-ranked students, and La Primera when they were starting off the the terastallization stuff. I was just a new student back then though, wasn't even done with the test yet, it was five or six years ago." Altair scratched his head, trying to remember the bits of stuff he ignored during his school days.

Meanwhile, Togedemaru and Pawniard seem to be trying to dig Ferroseed out of the ground with their tail and balded hands respectively. Using his tail as a crowbar, Togedemaru lifted the entire oval-shaped Pokemon from the dirt. Ferroseed looked at the other Ferroseed, still unmoving, before quickly bouncing up and onto its trainer's lap. Then, with a burst of red light, seemingly returned to his Pokeball out of its own volition.

"Shiii-" Altair scrunched up as the spikey ball hit him, but looked up at the two trainers after taking a few deep breaths. "Okay...not bleeding, good." He muttered before explaining. "He's always been a bit of a loner, he's usually okay with my other Pokemon, but maybe...well, he's never really great with his own kind, maybe it's because Paldea doesn't have many Ferroseeds at all, or maybe it's the..." Altair looked at the two Carcadets the two trainers had, "I don't own any fire types, he's probably not used to being around them." He muttered, implying that perhaps the Ferroseed was afraid of the fire type Pokemon.

"So...are you two like...related...in some way?" Altair muttered awkwardly as he gently pointed between the two Carcadets while eyeing the two, after a few seconds of awkward silence after Ferroseed returned to his Pokeball.

3 August, Jubilife City

Teddy observed Altair’s Ferroseed—Alki—as he initially made eye contact with Thorn before quickly spinning and burrowing further into the soil. He tilted his head, puzzled. Why didn’t he react with excitement at meeting a Pokémon of the same species? It was the opposite of how Cinder had reacted to Cabadura when they first met. Watching closely, Teddy noted the clear tension in Alki, especially once he spotted the two Charcadet.

Once Altair caught his breath and explained, Teddy nodded. “Makes sense that he’d be cautious around Fire-types.” And maybe there was more to the story there…

When Altair asked if the two Charcadet were related, Teddy shot a glance at Ramona, a grin tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Nope, just a coincidence!” he replied. “And it’s funny how it’s happened twice now. I mean, it’s not everyday that you get to see someone with a Ferroseed and Charcadet around these parts of Sinnoh.”

Turning back to Altair, Teddy scratched his chin thoughtfully. “It’s possible that Alki’s response here is due to unfamiliarity mixed with some old fear of Fire-types. Sometimes Pokémon develop these habits as defense mechanisms, even when there’s no immediate danger. It’s likely that some traumatic experience left him with a lasting impression.”

He sighed, his expression softening. “If I had to guess, maybe Alki had a bad run-in with a Fire-type in the past? Anyway it doesn’t seem like the kind of thing we can fix in a day. And... I’m sorry I can’t be of much help. So much for being a Pokémon researcher—looks like I still have tons to learn.” he added, while scratching the back of his head. As he said this, Cinder looked up at his trainer, his usually intense expression softening. Stepping closer to Teddy, he gave a firm nod and tapped Teddy’s leg with his tiny fist, as if to reassure his trainer.

Vanilla hadn't need to get on Mobi to avoid the ground attacks. Medicham picked her up and used Detect to find the safest spot on the ground to avoid the waves of ground shaking moves. Sandslash was still standing strong, thanks to its natural defense.

"Hey! Goomy changed!" G cried out excitedly. It was so awesome to finally see an evolution like that. But that quick reactions from the newly evolved Goomgoom and Altair made her turn her attention to the Steelix. "Vanilla, focus all your energy on Icy Wind!"

Medicham placed the artic fox down as she rushed in with Force Palm. Vanilla took in a bid deep breath and followed up the Muddy Water with an Icy Wind so strong she flew back into G's arms. The streamer barely managed to stand her ground as the wet metallic Snake was covered in a muddy frozen layer. Medicham connected with her Force Palm and to follow up, Sandslash emerged from the ground, smacking the Dig attack into the Steelix's jaw.

The giant Pokemon roared as it began to break the ice off and crashed against the cave's walls, slowly falling towards the ground. "Premier Ball, go!" G called out as she ran ahead and threw the white Poke ball as hard as she could. The sphere smacked Steelix and began to shake wildly, before Click! it secured the capture.

"Huh?! It worked?!" G's jaw dropped and turned to look at Altair, unsure on what to do after that.

Ramona listened to Altair's tale about his unique Sliggoo and then Ferroseed, which the latter had only stood to confuse her greatly. A Ferroseed in Paldea? There was a possibility of it being dropped off there or it had a small little family hidden away in seclusion. What happened when Thorn and the two Charcadets got close was even more bizarre. Was it scared of another Ferroseed?

None of this was adding up, the only thing that was adding up was the fear of Fire-Types. Cabadura noticed the fear of the Ferroseed and the Klefki and Togedemaru got mad at them, and the Sliggoo flexing the Life Dew to protect the seed. To show peace, Cabadura held up his hands and backed up.

It was a little amusing watching the Ferroseed getting digged out by the Togedemaru and Pawniard, and Altair had his own insights about who was invited to BB Academy. A part of her realized their invitation didn't extend to her, and she felt a bit glum, but only briefly.

The Ferroseed hopped onto Altair's lap and returned itself. She winced, wondering how painful that had to be. She had to suppress her initial shock upon hearing his mumble, but now she was thinking.

A potential loner, but whatever happened must have happened before Altair had the little guy.

Upon being asked if they were related, Ramona laughed. "Haha, no, he'd be speaking with a more Paldean flair if he were." She then looked at Teddy with a teasing grin. "You could get two nickels for the coincidence and you could actually use that meme now." She giggled.

Teddy had a good theory going, but some things didn't make sense. First of all, why Paldea???

"Well, if it was a loner since you knew it, it's possible it wasn't like that until it had the traumatic experience. When you are dealing with an unknown, like that of Alki's history before you met it, it's good to find something regarding it, even if it is just a small clue. Pokémon not native to a region are usually placed there by a person - whether a former trainer or getting rehomed, and the latter tend to dump small families of Pokémon if they're doing that. Or, they were already there, they were just hard to find because they hid themselves so well. Might want to look into that to find a direction. Plus, Pokémon generally don't have problems with their own kind unless they have a bad experience because of them or regarding them. It's the same reason why a child generally wouldn't hate their parent unless something really bad happened to shatter that trust and that homely feel. It doesn't have to be that they got bullied, but that's sometimes the case. Hope that helps." She smiled, feeling like she did a good job. Ironic that she knew a bit about this sort of stuff and yet couldn't apply it once she got upset with someone.

She then turned to Teddy. "You'll get there. I'll even help." She gave him a soft nudge on the arm with her elbow.

She then gave a soft 'oh', having been reminded why they were here. "Right, we need to find you a Pokémon, and I need to start contest training. Altair, you've been around the block. Got any tips or know anyone who can give tips?" She asked excitedly, her hands in eager fists and her stance leaning forward slightly. Her Charcadet slapped his forehead.

"W-what?" Altair shouted towards G as he saw her toss a ball at the Steelix. "Are you sure you can-" He pulled on the girl's arm a bit, trying to stop her from getting close to the ball she just thrown while it was still shaking slightly. Before he can finish attempting to scold the younger trainer for attempting something so reckless, the click of the successful capture overtook the atmosphere in the cave, as things returned to silence with a bit of scurrying of the remaining smaller Pokemon.

"Okay, fine." He got up and walked towards the newly evolved Sliggoo, before turning back to look at G. "Good job. It was a little reckless, maybe use an ultra ball or dusk ball next time. But it's good that things worked out this time." He patted the Sliggoo as it rolled around a bit in its newly formed shell, the trainer smiled slightly at the shelled Pokemon. "How're you feeling? Are you still our Goob Goob?" Empoleon and Dhelmise wandered back to their trainer and glanced at the Sliggoo as well.

It was a few moments before Altair would notice that G seemed lost as to what to do, she didn't even get close to the Pokeball that held the Steelix despite the capture being successful. He sighed, realizing what has happened.

"Were you...not expecting that?" He asked softly, wondering whether her actions were out of panic rather than and sort of real plan. "It is a bit of an advanced Pokemon for level, I'm not sure if it'll listen to you, considering..." Altair looked at his Pokemon, and the two other trainers who assisted in the battle against Steelix. He didn't want to say it outloud that Steelix might not approve of G as its trainer, since it was mostly others who actually fought it. "-But, uh, this type of thing happens a lot actually, it happens all the time back in Paldea, haha." He laughed a bit awkwardly trying to lift the mood. "As long as you can prove yourself strong enough to handle a Pokemon, it'll respect you back, that's all."

Altair looked at the two others present, the girl was the more...wordy one, compared to the researcher. Both of them offered some similar advice, that his Pokemon's behaviour was probably due to something in its past.

"...Uh...Yeah..."
Altair didn't really know what to respond with, considering that much was to be assumed. "...It's alright, researchers don't know everything either, I wasn't expecting that much." But it was interesting that both Teddy and Ramona mentioned Ferrothorn's abnormal behaviour around its own kind, he haven't really thought about it much before.

"Oh, is that so?" He said half-heartedly while lost in thought. "I didn't think much about that, the part about being uncomfortable with their own kind." Pawniard jumped off from the log they were standing on. "During my second year at the Academy, I did my treasure hunt project on the unique evolutions of Paldea, and certain Pokemon like Pawinard and Bisharp, it's actually normal for them to have intense conflicts with their own kind. It's the same for the Luxio and Luxray that also lived in the area. I almost got my arm sliced off a few times, ha." He laughed a bit before looking over at Pawniard, who exhibited a concerningly excited demeanor at the mentioning of slicing limbs off. "But you're right, it probably isn't normal for most kinds of Pokemon, there's no mention of the Ferrothorn family engaging in that sort of behavior."

Ramona seems to be of the same attitude towards the quiet researcher before she mentioned that they were actually here to catch Pokemon and train for contests. The girl asked him for some tips, Altair considered for a moment before replying. "...I do know a few things about catching Pokemon." Klefki hovered behind him, raising his tendrils. "The Pokemon around here are weaker, and easily startled, they would probably run if you cause too much of a ruckus, but Psi here can help with that if you need. He knows a few tricks to make sure nothing can escape." He nodded towards the Klefki, who has a devious expression on its metal ring. "...As for contests...I do know someone who is also doing that, but she's...only been a trainer for...maybe 6 weeks. I could contact her if you really want, but uh... I been a trainer for a while, but I don't know much about contests, that's all."

3 August, Jubilife City

Hearing Ramona’s offer to help, Teddy smiled warmly. “Thanks, Ramona. I really appreciate it. And it sounds like Altair might be able to point you toward someone who can help with contest training too,” he added with a nod toward Altair.

Before the conversation could continue, Teddy’s phone buzzed in his pocket. Glancing at the screen, he noticed it was an unknown number. “Sorry, everyone. Let me take this real quick,” he said, stepping aside as he answered the call.

As he listened to the voice on the other end, his expression shifted, the usual warmth on his face fading into concern. His brow furrowed, and he ran a hand through his hair as he processed the news. Ending the call, he turned back to Ramona and Altair, his voice quiet but steady. “That was... unexpected. I just got word that the professor had run into a car accident. I need to head home right away.”

He gave them both an apologetic look. “I’m really sorry to cut this short, but I need to pack up and catch the next ferry.” Turning to Ramona, he smiled faintly. “Good luck with your contest, Ramona. I know you’ll do great. And Altair,” he added, “I hope things work out with Alki. I'm sure you'll get it eventually if you keep trying.”

With a wave, Teddy called Cinder back to his Pokéball, then slung his bag over his shoulder. “Take care, both of you. Maybe we’ll cross paths again someday.”

And with that, Teddy set off down the path toward Jubilife City, the urgency of the news propelling him forward. As he walked, the cool night air did little to ease the growing worry in his chest, but he knew he had to focus on the road ahead.

It seemed that Altair had never thought about why Alki was so... strange around his own kind. Ramona hummed as Altair began speaking. She understood the dynamics and relationship between Pokemon and inner conflict, but the problem stemmed from how they behaviorally acted with one another on instinct. It was interesting to note that Altair had some teaching in Paldea, which was great. Her home region's educational system getting some acknowledgment was nice. Her and her Charcadet passed off a worried look as the Pawniard seemed a bit too excited for ... the macabre.

Things moved on to her question, and it seemed that Altair had some modest view of his knowledge. He explained that some Pokemon here were more skittish than others, which really meant that - due to the Explosion earlier - there wouldn't be much around unless they went into the tree line. It was nice to know that he had a Pokemon that could prevent their escape though.

Unfortunately, Altair didn't know much about contests, and it was weird to get the phone number of a random stranger from another random stranger she didn't put much stake into sticking around them, especially when this girl he was talking about was a new trainer. Nope, she'll pass, but she wanted to make it seem like she was actually thinking about it to not be rude. She hummed, tapping her finger to her chin. "Uhh... You know what, I'll think I'll figure it out myself. But thanks for the offer. But, it does seem like you got some battling tips. That could help." She smiled, only for her Cabadura to look at Teddy worryingly.

Ramona also caught on, turning her head to see Teddy was on the phone, listening to someone on the other end. She could tell things weren't good. When it was explained, she hummed from disappointment. She felt a little bad he couldn't stick around, but he needed to go back home, so she gave a smile, her Charcadet waving to Cinder. "Well, see ya later then. Hope he's alright. Good luck on your research stuff." She grinned, watching as he regarded Altair and then left.

She sighed, scratching the back of her head. Now she really had to figure out what in the hell she could do with her Turtwig and Shinx-... No, just Turtwig. She scratched the back of her head, humming, realizing how embarrassing this was. "Huh... Well uh... I just realized I need to talk with my Pokemon-..." She paused, her Charcadet glaring up at her and crossing his arms. She sighed. "Okay, fine... Since my Pokemon here thinks I need more help than that, I guess I can stick around with you for a while. Not sure where you're heading though, so if you need to go anywhere, that's fine. I need to stay in Jubilife for a couple days anyway."

That's when she realized. She didn't get Teddy's phone number. Not wanting to miss this chance, she held out her phone. "Uhhh, but if you do decide to leave, can we exchange numbers please? I might need some battle help in the future." She smiled, hoping to salvage the awkwardness she created.

"Ah, yes. I do hope you get that sorted out." When Teddy informed them that he had to leave, Altair nodded and gave him some condolences. If they were a bit further from Jubilife City, he may have offered to escort the researcher to back to the city. Though the latter seemed both in a rush and comfortable enough to handle the area.

After the researcher left, Ramona seems to get back on track with her own goals...or at least that what it seemed like. Altair didn't expect her to take up the offer of being introduced to G, since that girl doesn't exactly have a ton of battle tips to give out. "Battle tips?" He asked. "It's true I don't know much about contests, but I take that contests isn't your only goal?"

Ramona then mentioned something about needing to talk to her Pokemon awkwardly, her Charcadet seems rather crossed at her attitude. Altair wasn't one who liked to judge the relationship between people and Pokemon, but it seemed like Ramon's party is taking issues to some of her actions. "I see...I'm honoured that your Pokemon...approves of me?" He can tell the girl seemed defeated, for whatever reason, that may or may not involve her Pokemon, though he wasn't sure exactly what was going on.

"I'm not too sure where I'm heading, I came to Sinnoh for some rather specific tasks that I'm...mostly done with." Altair glanced at Sliggoo before looking back at Ramona. "I don't really have anything to do, for now, until my savings run dry at least." He chuckled in a slightly self-deprecating fashion.

"Uh, you said battle tips, and battle help or whatever, but you haven't told me anything about yourself." Altair looked back at the girl and tried to pivot the conversation to be more substantial. "You don't even know me or whether I can be of help either." He responded. "I'm not against it, giving you my contact information that is, but maybe you can explain what type of help you need a little first? Beyond the Pokemon contests that is."

Yeah, Ramona was all over the place. First, she wanted some tips, but then if she wanted to train, she didn't want Altair to see how poorly her own Pokemon thought of her. She nodded as Altair asked his first question. "Yeah..."

Of course, that didn't stop her from being all over the place the next moment, giving some sort of tired scoff as Altair remarked on how honored he felt. She listened further to what Altair had to say, humming when he said he had almost finished his task. She almost felt bad for him financially. Upon hearing that he would like to get to know her better and pointed out that she didn't know much about him either, she gave a sheepish chuckle. "Ahah yeah... Uh, okay." She can feel Cabadura staring holes into her skull, so she might as well fess up. "I'm an up-and-coming Pokemon Ranger, but I was told I couldn't graduate yet. So, instead of taking the exchange program, I asked if I could compete in the Sinnoh Gym Circuit, and they let me. You look like you've been through a lot, you also have some pretty strong Pokemon and know what you're doing. It's rare to come upon someone who knows how to stop a Pokemon from fleeing and keep down the Explosion without getting anyone or yourself hurt. All these require some amount of training - and if not training - then experience a veteran trainer has. You've been through this before, otherwise your Pokemon wouldn't have Protect or Life Dew. Plus, you said you were in Paldea's university, so I assumed you know what you're doing as it's been a while." She gave a sheepish smile. "So uh... Yeah, I basically started this whole journey thing a couple days ago..." Actually... It was yesterday.

After that was done, she hummed. "Well, since you don't seem like you're heading much of anywhere, I wouldn't mind if you hang around and helped me. You don't have to if you don't want to, though." She gave an easy smile, hoping he wouldn't stick around her, but something told her he might. She didn't want to come off like some sopping wet Growlithe, but she swore she did, which only furthered her embarrassment that she was trying to keep down.

As Aldon had concluded his book reading, it would soon be time for him to begin trekking his journey to the next town, and his next destination. As he made sure all of his belongings were accounted for, he noticed Skol whom was sleeping with a book gently resting against his snout. The eager little hippo tired himself out while attempting to help Aldon read. Though upon further examination, Aldon realized Skol was in posession of a fishing guide. At least he was consistent.

The books were returned to where they belonged and lifting Skol whom was still snoring. A peak of the eye revealed the psychic pokémon to be faking and seeking carriage. Soon enough, the duo was back again out on route 218. In order to get to Oreburgh City, he'd first need to travel through Jubilife City, which was great because he could visit the oldest settlement in Sinnoh. It didn't seem likely he'd find any hint or clue to the location near Oreburgh that he was looking for, but any chance to expand his knowledge was appreciated.

He arrived in Jubilife around lunchtime, and had eaten a sandwich he had gotten from the pokémart. His next destination was the Pokétech Company. A detour or two on his journey wouldn't hurt and he could get his Pokétech watch updated. As he arrived at the company building, there was a woman at the front desk to greet him.

"Hello, how may I be of assistance?" She asked.

"Oh, uh. I was doing sone traveling through Sinnoh, and while passing through Jubilife, I thought I'd get this thing updated." As he extended his arm, revealing his wrist. Her cheerful smile began to sag and form into a look of confusion. She then looked at Aldon before blinking.

"That's a C-gear. This is a pokétech store, and we don't work on C-Gear" just as those words slipped her mouth, a scientist overheard this commentary and walked over. With peaked interest, he looked over to Aldon.

"Did I by chance hear you have a C-gear? Because I've been working on a collaboration project that would allow Pokétech features to work on C-Gear" he patiently held his hand out. Aldon hesitated for a moment, but handed it to him.

"I'll be done in a few minutes" and just like that, the man walked away and shuffled off to an 'Employee Only' door. Not entirely sure what to think, Aldon asked the lady if they had a tour, and luckily for Aldon, the next one would begin in thirty minutes. Giving him time to wander the streets of Jubilife City. He visited the Global Trade Station and WCS building briefly and hunting around town for various plaques and signs which were about Jubilife Village. By the time he returned to the Pokétech Company, it was nearly time for the tour to begin. During the tour, the scientist gave him his updated C-Gear. The C-Gear now had two additional screens. Now having a top and bottom screen and additional screen which folded on the side. One on each side. Fancy. He thanked the man whom requested that he call him at some point to see how his prototype faired. By the end of the tour, Aldon stood outside the company building. His next destination would be route 203, and he'd plan to set camp at the Oreburgh Gate.

In Oreburgh City Aldon accidentally found himself stumbling. As he did so, Skol, lagged behind at a leisurely pace, occasionally stopping to munch on a blade of grass or stare blankly into space.

As Aldon and Skol stroll through Oreburgh City, the steel-gray hues of the industrial town greeted them. Towering stone cliffs frame the horizon, their massive forms casting long shadows over the city. The air is thick with the earthy scent of quarried rock and the sharp tang of iron from the machines that chisel away at the mountain's heart.

The rumbling drone of drills and the clanging symphony of metal against stone echo through the stillness, punctuated by the occasional muffled boom as another load of ore is blasted loose from the mines.

Amidst the bustling factory district, you see workers clad in gritty overalls pausing for a smoke, their weathered faces etched with grime from a day's labor. Neon signs flicker to life as dusk falls, casting eerie reflections on the slick pavement. Aldon had his work gloves on ready to search for fossils.

Line_Cook_Brian.pngOuyi patted down his clothes as he emerged from the cave mouth that marked the halfway point of Route 203. A few encounters had left his already worn clothes dusty, but it had not been as bad as the number of bugs near Hearthome. No matter how many he had his Salandit fight off, more seemed to flock to their location. Ouyi followed the falling dust to the Pokemon surrounding his feet. His Salandit, darting between his legs in a tight, 8-shaped pattern. “We should find a calm place and take a break,” Ouyi said, his eyes turning to the other Pokemon he had out. His Trubbish was wandering nearby, searching the edge of the tall grass.

Only misguided people throw stuff there, Trubbish. You don't want their stuff, it's bad karma.” Ouyi paused as a calm breeze brushed by him. It made him realize how much an underground path could make him miss something as simple as fresh air. “This place has calm all around...” He said to himself and adjusted the straps of his makeshift backpack. “Let's go!” He called, eyes smiling whenever he addressed his Pokemon. It had not been long since Ouyi left home. It kept surprising him how fast one could get attached to the freedom of a trainer's life.

As they made their way down the beaten path toward Jubilife City, Ouyi came upon the stump of a large tree. “Right here is nice...” He said quietly as his hand brushed over the wood, tracing the exposed rings. “This stump was kind to remain. I wonder if people sat down around it to take a break and share stories...” It was comforting to imagine how many stories this one stump could retell. It reassured Ouyi that this stump would be a kind surface on which to prepare a meal. “Stay close, both of you, it won't take long to make some egg-fried rice to celebrate crossing the mountains.

As his Pokemon freely explored their immediate surrounding, Ouyi placed down his pack and began to unpack onto the stump. His eyes occasionally moved onto the road ahead as he sliced up some scallions and beat an egg. “Hello.” “Have a nice day.” “Be careful out there.” He would say with a smile to the passersby. His words varied between greetings and simple advice whenever someone crossed his line of sight until it was time to heat his pan. “Salandit! Would you mind helping me out?

At his request, Salandit scurried over. The lizard Pokemon made a few laps between Ouyi's legs before settling beneath the pan. Salandit danced in place, his tail whipped side-to-side, and his eyes stared up at the bottom of the pan. A few embers slipped from the Pokemon's mouth before it produced a steady flame to heat the bottom of the pan. “Thank you,” Ouyi said as he added oil to the hot pan, “You are a great assistant.” The words had barely left his lips and the steady flame disappeared. Ouyi moved the pan to find his Pokemon staring at him, huffing out a small ember as if spitting on the ground.

No, I did not mean-- Of course, you are helping-- I mean, I am the one who needs help! Yes! That's right!” Ouyi, noticing the slight shift in Salandit's demeanor, continued. “I need help or I would never be able to cook this meal. We-- would never eat again! Will you please help?” Seemingly satisfied, Salandit fell back in position and resumed breathing a small fire. He side-eyed Ouyi until he placed the pan back over the flame. “Thanks...” Ouyi said before letting out a sigh of relief. He appreciated Salandit for being able to provide a flame to cook on wherever they went, but this 'stove' was more temperamental than the one back home.

With his Pokemon-based heat source under control, Ouyi returned his focus to cooking. As he progressed through the recipe, one he knew by heart, the smell of his cooking mixed with the sweet scent of Salandit's flame. With some help from the gentle breeze that danced through Route 203, the scents of a warm meal spread through the air. There were a few who turned their heads, but none of them felt invited enough to approach. “It seems we won't be sharing any stories around this stump... That's alright, we don't have to.” Ouyi said as the meal was nearing completion. He looked down at the food in his pan, smirked, and let out a burst of laughter at the many portions. “I hope you both are hungry! I planned on guests at the table, and wasting food is bad karma.

She sure talks a lot. Altair thought as he looked at Ramona, who was introducing herself while seemingly complimenting him. His brain was making a small buffer symbol while Ramona explained her situation. Something something about being a Pokemon ranger? But also that she was planning to do the Sinnoh gym circuit? Didn't she also mention being a coordinator? Altair didn't know whether to call her ambitious or indecisive about what she actually wants, especially after hearing about how she just started her journey.

"Alright alright alright, pause." He found a pause in Ramona's words before interjecting. "Yes, I have been a Pokemon trainer for...Around a decade, if you stretch it." He also paused for a moment as he thought about his past and how much could it be counted as 'being a Pokemon trainer'. "But before you butter me up, what was that about rangers? Not letting you graduate? Exchange program? What?" Altair asked, a bit exasperated. He was vaguely aware that Pokemon rangers had to go through some sort of special training to be certified, but he wasn't so familiar with it that he knew what types of people could and couldn't graduate from it.

"...Why didn't they let you graduate? Because you're not good at battling?" Altair asked apprehensively, considering the information the girl has developed so far, her desire to get battle tips and participation in the Sinnoh circuit, that seemed like the most reasonable guess on why she couldn't complete her ranger program yet. Although Altair wasn't sure about how good at battling Pokemon rangers needed to be in the first place, if the rangers he's occasionally encountered in Unova and Kalos were the ones to go off of.

"I didn't expect to be picking up apprentices left and right when I came here, but it's true that I don't have much to do for the moment. If all you want is some advice on battling, I could try." Altair sat back down on the log and sighed calmly. "Is there anything you want to learn about specifically?"

As he waited for an answer, a gentle breeze blew through the relatively cool summer air of Sinnoh. But something was off with this breeze.

"Do you smell fire?" Altair paused for a moment before asking Ramona, but the smell wasn't strong and it was mixed in with what seemed like food. It was likely just a traveler settling down for a meal or the likes. "Well, it doesn't smell that strong, probably a campfire." He added quietly.

Ramona looked at Altair quizzically. How was it that hard to follow? Were people that d-...

She caught herself and decided not to even think it.

So, she explained herself. As much as her pride was willing to do so. Well, first, she waited for all of his questions so she could answer them one by one, but it took every part of her will (and Cabadura's constant skull-boring gaze) to even answer any of these questions truthfully.

She looked like her face was about to explode, her tone hesitant. "W-well..." She rolled her eyes and scoffed, crossing her arms. "Ugh, fine, I didn't graduate because I don't know how to talk to people or Pokemon, apparently. They said my behavior - which can be changed - wasn't suitable to be a Ranger." She let out a terse sigh, relaxing her arms. "In Almia, there's a boarding school for teenagers to become the next Pokemon Rangers in some amount of years. They test everything from how you handle emergencies to dealing with people or Pokemon who are panicking at set intervals so they can get you experienced enough to work well in a team and under stress with uncooperative people. We're supposed to be the first responders if anything happens in the region, so we're not just there to twirl our discs around a panicked Pokemon and command them. There's a lot more to it than that. They mentioned an exchange program to help me figure out people and Pokemon better, but they decided that doing the gym circuit would be a better idea after I brought it up."

She looked away, huffing. The next question was going to be answered until she smelled something off. Fire, yes, but it smelled so delicious. When was the last time she ate?

Her and Cabadura exchanged glances, before she began running off towards the smell, using this opportunity to run from the embarrassing situation she was in temporarily. "Let's go see what's up!" She yelled, hoping it didn't look like she was running away from confessing.

Cabadura - on the other hand - slapped his forehead, letting out a crackling sigh. He looked back up at Altair with a flat expression that spoke that this wasn't the first time, then chased off after Ramona.

When Ramona made it to the little spot closer towards Jubilife, she finally found whoever was making the food, but what she saw put into question the potential health hazard of the meal. Three Poison-Types? She recognized one from Paldea, that being a Varoom. Salandit was an easy one to remember, and so was Trubbish.

Luckily, she didn't throw herself out of a bush, she had jogged along the path where she checked to see a guy make a huge portion - more than just for the four of them. She waved, giving a sweet smile. "Hiya, that's quite a lot of food you've made. And it smells really good. Are you willing to accommodate me, my friend, and our Pokemon?" Realizing how a lot that sounded, she blinked a few times, then chuckled nervously. "Ah, that-... That sounded too much, I apologize."

She just threw herself from one embarrassing situation into another, her cheeks turning quite red. She backed up a bit, only for her Charcadet to make a beeline for her and kick her in the calf. She jumped a couple times, holding her leg as she glared down at her pesky Fire-Type. "What was that for??? That hurrrrt..." She whined, earning a scoff of embers from her Fire-Type, who gave her a scathing a look.
