"Anyone who runs is a VC. Anyone who stands still is a well-disciplined VC!"

Best way to function as a crew is to help each other in unique ways. Even if your character's job/discipline isn't immediately helpful to the situation, it's fun finding ways to help using what you know. For example, you're the engineer in ship combat? Reroute power to the primary guns, helping the gunners do more damage. You're the navigator when the ship's investigating the environment of an alien planet? Use your history to see if you've encountered navigational difficulties in similar environments.
Working as an individual for the unit is the way you form a close crew.
There's a reason why we got roles
Other than the uhhh
I dunno
To sound cool?

Come on down to Sail the Stars Rp!

We have:

-Scawweey alien
-The chad meme personafied
-A space cow
-The obligatory pink haired anime girl
-Some military guy we found outside
-Robo waifu
-robo child with a knife
-Some Samus Aran lookalike

I'll be updating choices of missions.
Important notice, not all characters will be going on to missions. important figures such as head engie, cap, nav will usually stay on ship unless the situation requires them badly.

I've been thinking, since we are dealing with themes of cyberpunk and mega corporations...it should involves the Japanese somehow.

Yamaguchi-Gumi (30th generation)
Kanji: 三十代目山口組

(The Yamabishi crest that had endured as a symbol of Japanese organised crime for centuries)

The Yamaguchi-gumi is an interstellar megacorporation that operates in every human territory in the galaxy. The gumi could trace it's origin back to a loose labour union for dockworkers in Kobe before World War 2, named after it's founder Yamaguchi Harukichi. Dealing in a wide variety of businesses, companies under the patronage of Yamaguchi-gumi had registered as interplanetary shipping, talent agencies, corporate security, banking, manufacturing and other legal businesses such as restaurants and bars. Under the disguise of such legal operations, the Yamaguchi-gumi as the most notable Yakuza organisation also engage in extortion, blackmail, smuggling, prostitution, arms trafficking, drug trafficking, gambling, loan sharking, slave trades, real estate and construction kickback schemes, with an army of lawyers and corrupted politicians defending the mega crime syndicate. The Yamaguchi-gumi are among the galaxy's wealthiest gangsters, bringing incomes of quadrillions of credits each year.

While they are indeed organised crime syndicate, the Yakuza had a tradition to serve as relief support for the public after disasters, when human were still living on Earth and Yamaguchi-gumi was operating in Japan, which often get hit by disaster like earthquakes and tsunami, the Yakuzas were usually the first responder in large-scale relief effort for the earthquake victims, opening its offices to the public as shelter and helping with the delivery and distribution of food and supplies like water, blankets and toiletries to evacuation centres. The Yakuzas who move swiftly and quietly to provide aid to those most in need were essential to the population, when official support was inconsistent and chaotic especially at the initially first few days after disaster.

Of course, while trying to help other people who are in trouble was part of their intention, they did not do this solely out of good will. They could gain lots of income from the reconstruction programme and creating good relations with locals would make it easier to collect protection rackets. Nonetheless, this tradition would be carry on into the age of space travel and the organised crime expands to the universe. In the chaos of the aftermath of the Last War, the Yamaguchi-gumi and other Yakuza clans organised the mass evacuation of the public that saved millions of people when the officials were clueless as the spaceship for the chosen few left the Earth for good. They also give a heavy amount support to Japanese communities all over the galaxy, despite their business practices and overall history being considered unethical, they had gained the respect of a surprisingly large amount of people.

The Yamaguchi-gumi operates a fleet of 30,000 warships, mostly small vessels like destroyers, frigates and corvette. The Yamaguchi-gumi did not possess most of these ships nor train the crew themselves, rather they are mostly space pirates, being employed as private military contractor granting them legal protections while still acting as pirates, and in return they will not attack assets of Yamaguchi-gumi and will serve the crime syndicate when situations calls for it, like privateers during the age of sails.

Organisation of the Yamaguchi-gumi is a hierarchy that is reminiscent of a family. The leader are the oyabun (親分; literally “parent status”), and the followers are known as kobun (子分; literally “child status”) with a rigid hierarchy and discipline, Kobun traditionally take a blood oath of allegiance, and a member who breaks the yakuza code must show penance—historically through a ritual in which the kobun cuts off his little finger with a sword and presents it to his oyabun, known as Yubi-tsume(指詰め). The exact title in the chain of command might vary in different Yakuza organisation, in the 30th Yamaguchi-gumi, the command structure are like this: Kumicho (組長, boss), with a Saiko-komon (最高顧問 chief advisor) as his aides -- Wakagashira (若頭, second boss) -- Shateigashira (舎弟頭, third boss), with their respective sub divisions. The Wakagashira are the second in line to take office when the Kumicho died or retired, and Shateigashira are not in this line, so while Shateigashira are de jury the third in command, some believe the de facto third in command are actually the assistant of Wakagashira, known as Wakagashira-hosa (若頭補佐). As the result, due to the nature of the job, the Wakagashira suffered relatively high casualty rate compare to other positions in the crime syndicate as the possibility of assassination are the highest against Wakagashira.

Well technically there's enough room for crime syndicates to dab around since the Totally Not Space Marines are busy with other matters...
WAR AMONG HUMANS CONFIRMED

Well, realistically speaking I don’t think Yakuza would be able to literally wage war, but, sure, sounds interesting
