Realistic or Modern Night’s Embrace | Private |

Emory was surprised at her reaction to say the least, the man's expression breaking and showing his shock for her to respond to him so formally. Had he actually enraged with his teasing? Worry had settled within him for a few seconds, but that vanished to relief as he saw the smile that crossed her lips. Thank goodness, he didn't cross a line with her. At her words, the man sighed as he got up from his position on the dock, brushing himself off before following after her, a wicked grin crossing his face in response to her, "Is that a challenge, Rose? I fear this isn't something you can easily win. And here I was thinking I was being the perfect gentleman." He followed after her as she had quickened her pace to a light jog, quickening his own pace until he caught up with her. Ah, when had he felt so carefree in his life? It was... odd to feel such a way, in such a playful mood. His golden eyes gentled as he watched her, yes he certainly could enjoy every day with her like this.

Falling silent, he enjoyed the cool night air as he trotted behind her, following her until the mansion had came into view. However, in the darkness, he could see a shape lingering near the side of the pathway, his eyes narrowing and expression hardening again. One of his henchman had returned, a sentry he used to track the ins-and-outs of the Black Market for either suspicious marks or potential targets. The sweet moment he had with Rose was quickly coming to an end, and it was time to force back his carefree feelings for his work demanded his attention now, and judging from the posture of the cloaked individual it was urgent. They normally never appeared directly at the mansion, usually sending letters. His pace quickened so that he was at Rose's side, murmuring to her as his tone seemed as cold as it usually would be, "Go ahead without me, there's something I need to attend to first." He paused, though looking to Rose with a faint smile upon his face, murmuring softly to her, "I'll make up for my rudeness later." The playful look in his eyes promised that much as he turned from her and approached the cloaked man, though the individual in question had bowed at his approach, Emory had lowered his voice to him a few quiet words which caused the mysterious individual to whisper in return, clearly the news wasn't too pleasant due to Emory's golden eyes becoming more frigid as he released a long heavy, seemingly annoyed sigh. Ah, why wasn't he surprised anymore? He muttered a few words to the cloaked man and the two walked off a few paces away from the mansion, the darkening skies concealing what path they were taking.

...
Viola was waiting at the mansion's front door, though the woman kept repeatedly checking outside for the two, eventually she had caught sight of Emory and Rose. Joy swelled in her heart at the sight, though confusion quickly followed as she spotted the sentry near the side of the road. Her heart dropped with disappointment seeing Emory stop, even if she was pleased at the way he was looking at Rose now, she couldn't help but be disappointed and worried with the expression that crossed his face upon seeing the sentry. Was everything alright? She knew well enough Emory was deeply tied with the Black Market, so the fact that he had been called away for whatever reason was not good. A frown had crossed her face as she watched the man walk off into the dark, though the woman quickly tried to change her expression to be more cheerful as she turned to look at Rose, a soft smile crossing her face.

"Welcome back, Lady Barclay." Her tone was warm, although brimming with her previous excitement, only allowing her voice to finally give way to the excitement threatening to burst through, "So, how was it? I trust the experience was good for you both, was it not?" With the way the woman's eyes were shining, she was very much eager to hear all the details of what had happened, desiring nothing more to feel more joy at the thought that Emory had finally found someone for himself. She seemed like an excited little girl though at this moment, a more youthful excitement brimming from the usually quiet maid.

Rose glanced back at him as she hurried back on the path, noticing that he was quick to follow her. She only stopped for a moment to face him and respond to his words. “You seem to forget that I am the youngest out of five sisters Emory. You have no clue what I am capable of.” Her words held a certain smugness behind them. She let out another gentle laugh before hurrying back towards the mansion once more. She slowed her pace enough to where Emory could catch up to her. It almost felt odd returning back to the grounds, knowing that the moment they just shared was coming to an end. She only hoped that this would be the first of many. She would be able to handle times like this every day. It brought her an immense amount of joy.

Some confusion flashed on her expression when she saw the cloaked man standing by the pathway near the front door. She didn’t recall ever seeing someone like him before. She paused her walking to look to Emory, raising an eyebrow slightly as she waited for him to fully catch up to her. It was clearly something that he needed to handle before they had dinner. She noticed the change in his expression. It put a damper on the happiness she was feeling. She offered him a soft smile in return, nodding. “You must otherwise it will be a very lonely rest of your evening.” She teased lightly in response, stepping towards the door. “Please do not take too long. I am sure dinner is ready.” She added before stepping inside.

She was immediately greeted by Viola, which was a comfort. “Thank you Viola.” She greeted in response. She allowed herself to laugh as she heard the excitement in her tone. She couldn’t help herself any. She knew that it must’ve been hard for the maid to wait to hear what all happened while they were at the lake. “It was incredible. We almost kissed, but he decided to be stubborn and hold off. I do not think he will be able to stop himself from doing so for much longer though.” She bit lightly down on her bottom lip. She could still feel the gentle touch of his hand on her face. Her cheeks flushed a light pink again. She carefully undid the overcoat she wore, deciding it would be easier to leave it in one of the coat closets near the front door.

After doing so, she turned to look at Viola once more. “I have never seen him act the way he did. We were laughing and bantering. He was smiling and enjoying himself. We are even going to be attending the spring ball and one of the festivals here in the summer.” She informed. There was so much that she wanted to tell her, but she didn’t know exactly where to start. She began to walk towards the dining hall, taking her usual seat at the table. She signaled for Viola to sit as well as she knew it might be a little until Emory joined them. It was then that she finally told her everything. She started with their conversation in the bedroom before moving to the occurrences at the lake. “I am so deeply in love with him. I never thought I would feel like this.” She confessed.

Viola's eyes grew wide, her face reddening as Rose had mentioned that Rose and Emory had almost kissed. If it was possible for the maid's jaw to hit the floor, it would have at that very moment. "L-Lord May, h-he did.. what?!" An excited squeal had left the maid's lips as she spoke in quickened voice, "Oh, you simply must tell me more!" It seemed like Rose had the woman hooked already, never would she think that Emory would have it in him to kiss... well nearly kiss someone. Perhaps the man was actually beginning to act normally? She certainly would hope so! Ah, all the possibilities had swirled about in the maid's head as she eagerly listened to every word. Of course, such gossip would eventually lead to the dining hall as Viola listened attentively, a broad and excited smile remaining upon the woman's lips. To hear of a different side of Emory was so difficult to believe, she almost couldn't bring herself to believe it if it weren't for the look Emory had given Rose before he had to leave her side.

When Rose had finished, Viola could only feel an intense feeling swelling within her chest. Relief? Or was it pride? Regardless, despite her happiness the woman couldn't help but tear up at Rose's words, lifting a hand to hastily wipe away the tears, "O-oh, forgive me. I just never thought such a day would come." She sniffled, attempting to regain her composure, a proud smile crossing her face her brown eyes swam with her happy tears, "I was so worried that he would be by himself forever. I couldn't help but think that would be true." She sniffled again, resting her hands in her lap a sigh of relief leaving her lips, "It really seems like Azeya answered my prayers, by sending you here, you truly have been the best influence on Lord May. Thank you." The gratitude could be heard in her trembling voice, lifting her head to grin happily at Rose as she laughed, "Here I am crying as if I've gone looney. I swear, I'd never thought I would be as bad as my own mother, but it seems as if I've reached that point."

The maid's gaze was warm, relief obvious in her expression as she said in amusement, "Now, if only my eldest boy would be the type to settle. I swear, he's always chasing the next skirt he sees." Exasperation had settled in the maid's expression, a concerned mother indeed. "But, I'm so happy at the very least Emory is pursuing you. I wish for many years of happiness ahead for both of you." The maid certainly meant those words, she could only wish that Rose and Emory would remain together as long as they could. She still had her worries of course, though they circled around Emory and his ever so bad habit of getting sunk deeper and deeper into the Black Market, but as long as Rose was there to pull him out of his dark moods every time, Viola was certain she wouldn't have to worry too much. A bright laugh left the woman's lips as she said excitedly, "If things continue smoothly, I expect to be invited to your wedding." Of course, such a thing would be a ways away, as she knew Emory still had a long way to go before he was ready to settle, but she was certain his eyes were only filled with Rose in mind.

Rose expected the reaction that she got from Viola. The maid had been the person she originally confided in. If it wasn’t for her, she might’ve never confessed. She didn’t know exactly what she had been feeling originally. Viola was the one who helped her realize that it was affection and love. “You do not need to apologize to me Viola. You are one of the people responsible for this happening. If it wasn’t for you and Merewin, I never would have confessed to him. I have to thank you for that.” She spoke truthfully. She was so grateful to have had the other woman around her this entire time. She would’ve lost her mind if she hadn’t. Viola was the first friend she made here. She only hoped she would eventually find a way to properly thank her for all that she had done.

“I hadn’t expected for him to act the way he did either. It just seemed as though he finally allowed himself to relax and to feel everything he kept pent up. He seemed so happy. I can only hope that I continue to make him that happy. He truly deserves to feel that way.” She confessed. She knew now that she would do everything in her power to help Emory overcome his prior fears. She reached out to carefully take the maid’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “You have no reason to thank me. But it does seem that Azeya did answer your prayers. I suppose she answered mine as well.” Her voice grew quieter. She had always asked for someone to show her the affection and care she always desired. Maybe Emory truly would be the one for her. It was an amazing thought to have.

Her smile softened at her final comments. “He will eventually. I feel as though all boys go through that phase. I am sure he will find someone to be smitten with quick enough.” She assured. She bowed her head in thanks for her words. “I am sure that will be a long ways away. I have no intention of rushing Emory into anything he is not ready for. But if we do eventually get married, you will be the first person I invite.” She promised. She let go of her hand then, a gentle sigh leaving her. “I hope he isn’t kept for too long. I would like to eat dinner with him and I believe he does owe my a kiss.” She didn’t realize just how grave the situation could be. After all, she never dealt with the black market before. She had no clue everything that went along with it.

Viola's expression turned satisfied with Rose's words, though the woman had to chuckle, "Are you quite sure that's a good idea? As you said, Lord May has kept a lot of his emotions pent up, don't you think that's a bit too rash to begin pushing his buttons so soon?" Of course, Viola was merely joking. Emory was a grown man and had a lot of self control... most of the time. She had little to worry about concerning the man and Rose, and was quite proud of the man as if he were her own son. Her smile did waver as she looked over her shoulder toward the door, a bit of concern crossing her face, "..He certainly has been away for aw-" Before she could finish the sentence, much to her relief the front door had opened with Emory stepping through, but it seemed for once that at the very least he didn't appear to be too upset, instead lost in thought as he shrugged off his coat, his mind seemingly miles away from where he currently was. It was only when Viola had stood had Emory looked up, as if startled as Viola had approached him, bowing politely, "Welcome back, Lord May. I trust that everything is alright?"
...
Emory's expression had relaxed slightly upon seeing Viola, and her concern he could already feel. His jaw clenched slightly as he looked aside, eyebrows furrowing as his tone was a bit cold, "Complicated at best." He didn't seem to be too keen on speaking more on the matter, as the matter concerned an all too nosey shrew that had crawled her way into things better left alone. Of course, he also needed to have a word with Laurence Barker, a few harsh words indeed. A heavy sigh left his lips as he shook his head, putting his coat away within the nearest closet, though he could see the concern in Viola's face as he turned to face her as she echoed, "..Complicated?" Emory's eyes lifted from Viola's face, peering at Rose in the dining hall. His golden eyes seemed a bit dark and dim than before, though he looked down to meet Viola's gaze and said simply, "It'll be sorted out soon enough." The cold edge made a chill go down Viola's spine as the man walked past her, her hands clenching into the skit of her clothes. That was a sign, Emory was either going to kill or torture someone, that was the tone he always used, and Emory knew that Viola was aware of what he meant well enough.

The man had taken the seat across from Rose where Viola had been previously seated. He offered Rose an apologetic smile, the gold of his eyes thawing slightly as he gazed at her, "I apologize, something urgent needed my attention." Leaning closer in his spot, he allowed a warmer smile to cross his face, "I assure you, you have my full attention now." He didn't seem too keen on explaining what had just happened, nor would he allow Rose to know more about the situation. At the very least, once he dealt with it, there would be one less problem he had to deal with and more time dedicated to Rose was always more appealing to himself. Of course, the man's eyebrows furrowed after a few seconds as he spoke in a hesitant tone, "I do hope you're not too upset at me for earlier." Even if Rose had played it off with laughter, part of him was concerned that maybe she was a bit angry at him for teasing her too much. He couldn't help it though, the moment was perfect for him to toy with her, as immature of him that it was... it seemed like she kept drawing out a different and more youthful side to him.

The man's head turned slightly as he heard the sound of pots and pans, clearly meaning that Viola was beginning to start dinner for the two of them. A silent bit of gratitude had flared in the man's chest at that, for it meant some more time face to face with Rose... my, my... he really was becoming more anxious to be around her it seemed. Even while the sentry had been giving his report, Emory's thoughts kept straying back to the woman who captivated him completely and utterly.

Rose had only smiled at Viola’s words. She could tell the maid was joking. She knew that she was probably as happy to see Emory expressing herself as she was herself. She perked up more as the front door open, turning her gaze towards it. She was relieved to see that Emory walked in alone. His expression had returned back to the coldness that it usually held. It didn’t worry him too much though. She was sure he would relax once more when they began to speak again. The one thing that she didn’t understand was the way in which he spoke to Viola. The maid’s demeanor completely changed after she heard his last sentence. She figured it was best for her to not say anything nor was it her place to.

She offered him a bright smile as he sat down across from her. “It is alright. I know that you still have duties to attend to. After all, you are a lord and I have been keeping you occupied for most of the day.” She spoke in a reassuring tone. She had actually been surprised that he was able to spend so much time with her that day. It worried her that she was causing him to get behind in his work. She would hate for it to become a burden on him. She did her best to push those thoughts away, knowing Emory would’ve told her if he needed to step out to handle his duties. It wasn’t as if the young lord lacked his senses. Her eyes softened at his next words. “Emory, I am not upset at all. I actually quite enjoyed the banter we had going on.” She assured.

She shifted her positioning in the chair to be able to be closer to the table. “Besides, I believe that you still owe me a kiss. We can continue to act as though we want to keep this facade around it up, but I would love for you to be improper and do so sooner rather than later.” She confessed. She didn’t mind being a bit forward with him. It wasn’t like the other male couldn’t handle it. She glanced towards the kitchen as she heard Viola begin to cook. A part of her was grateful for that. It allowed them to have precious time together. She was sure she would only have him until after dinner as he would then need to handle everything he avoided during the day.

“I ended up telling Viola what happened while you were away. She was so happy for us that she cried Emory. I do not think I have seen her like that before. She was already mentioning how we would need to invite her to our wedding.” Her tone was assumed as she leaned back in her chair some. She would never admit it, but the activities from the day had made her quite tired. She was still a bit weak from her illness and pushed herself farther than she normally would’ve. She refused to let any signs of it show around the other male. It would only worry him and she would be brought back to her room. After all, she wanted to go with him to the village tomorrow. There was quite a bit that she had planned for the day, even after that. She bit the inside of her cheek at her thoughts, her gaze still focused on Emory.

Emory's expression seemed a bit relieved at Rose's reassurance, a smile laying claim to his face again. The man found it odd that he couldn't keep a smile off his face now, never having the need to even so much as laugh or smile before. Didn't at one point he considered such emotions as useless? I must have lost my mind as soon as I met you. He could only think the past him would be looking at him with disgust, a lovestruck fool he was indeed. Before even encountering Rose, Emory put work above anything else, people were used as pawns to him and no one was important to him. He kept everyone at arm's length, never allowing anyone to draw close to him out of fear that he would be hurt. He wouldn't deny, the fear that he would be hurt still lingered over him, to be betrayed like his mother had done to the former Lord May, but he would never think that Rose would do such a thing. Yes, he trusted her a bit more than he trusted anyone before... more than he probably should ever do so for anyone.

A bit of surprise had flickered across his face at Rose regarding the kiss, as if caught off guard for a few seconds. He wasn't expecting her to be so forward... not that it was unwelcome. A broad grin had then crossed the man's face, "Oh, how bold of you. Granted, I fear you may be encouraging me too much again. You really shouldn't do that." It almost seemed like a warning, but with the playfulness in his tone, it was quite hard to tell. His eyes didn't seem to give anything away whether he would fulfill her request or not, but he lowered his tone to the ever alluring, soft purr, "Though, it's not that I don't like that of course. I must warn you though, if I start it'll be hard me to stop." He paused as he heard a sudden clatter of pots from the kitchen as soon as he said that, causing the man to turn his head as if startled, though judging from the scrambling it was clear that Viola hadn't expected Emory to ever use such a tone, or even speak so playfully. A chuckle left the man in response, turning his attention to Rose as a grin remained upon his features.

This grin softened and faded when the conversation had turned to Viola. Never would he had thought that Viola would shed tears over him. Although he knew the maid had taken a more matronly role when his mother had never filled it for him, he had always thought the maid was only nice to him because she was required to be. Yes, he knew she worried for him, but never would he consider her to be one to shed tears on his behalf. A smile once more returned to his face has he murmured, "I suppose I was worrying her a bit too much all these years." He seemed lost in thought for a few seconds, though upon seeing Rose lean back in her chair, his golden eyes narrowed as he spoke, his tone returning to being serious, "You're tired, aren't you? I told you not to push yourself too much." Though he enjoyed being with her earlier, nothing should take priority over her health. If she were to become weaker because of such an outing, he would only have himself to blame for not noticing sooner.

Rose studied the other male as he sat in front of her. She noticed the change in his demeanor from the moment he stepped into the manor to the moment that he began to speak with her again. It warmed her heart to know that he was comfortable enough with her to feel as relaxed as he was. She only would hope that he would continue to allow himself to be vulnerable around her. She would hate for something to happen that would cause him to recede back into himself. It wouldn’t turn her away though. She had plans to continue to be there for him no matter what. She doubted that there was anything he could do that would turn her away completely. She almost couldn’t believe how smitten she found herself now. It was enough to make her want to laugh. She withheld the urge and focused fully on the conversation.

An amused smile came to her lips at his tone, knowing his words to be true. “If you had only just kissed me while we were at the lake, I would not have to tease you in such a way. But, alas, here we are.” Her tone held the same playfulness as his did. She tilted her head slightly at his words, raising an eyebrow. “Oh really? I do think I can handle that.” She mused. The clanging of the pots startled her as well. She turned her head to look at the kitchen. It was clear that Viola must’ve been eavesdropping on their conversation. She let out her own giggle. It was clear that her mood was much happier than it had been before. She never would have imagined that the day would’ve turned in this way. She was glad that it did though.

She noticed the way his smile fell from his lips as she spoke of Viola. “I believe that you were. I told you she cared for you dearly.” She reminded in a slightly smug tone. She normally would’ve never allowed herself to speak to another in such a way, but she knew Emory wouldn’t mind. It just made her think of the banter that they shared not long ago. She couldn’t help rolling her eyes slightly as she heard his next words. “Emory I am just a bit tired. I did not push myself too far nor is it anything I haven’t done before I was ill. I would have told you if I needed to rest earlier in the day. It was actually nice to return to doing so many activities. Besides, I will sleep well tonight.” She assured. She knew that he would always be worried for her heath, especially with how easy she had gotten sick before. She only hoped he wouldn’t hold himself accountable when she were to fall ill again in the future.

"If I had kissed you at the lake, we would have returned far later than we should have." The words were swift to leave his lips, a counter to her own. The man grinned, a rather boyish smile again, "I don't think you know what you're asking for. As much as I commend your bravery, you really should be more cautious. What was that saying again...? Ah, yes. All men are wolves." His hands clasped together before him, his golden eyes darkening ever so slightly as he chuckled, "And I fear, I'm no exception. In fact, I might be quite awful if you keep encouraging me." Another warning had slipped through, even if Emory was being rather playful, he was well aware that he had plenty of pent up emotions. As much as there was fear, he was attempting at least to hold onto common courtesy for Rose's sake as well as his own. It had certainly been years since he had even allowed himself to come in contact with a woman, and having ignored attraction and other such things for so long... even he felt a bit of concern if he could control himself. These emotions and desires were so new, so fresh, that he wasn't even certain how to properly show self-restraint. And even he knew how he was like once he lost control, something that he didn't desire Rose to see.

Emory frowned slightly at her response, clearly unconvinced. However, a sigh had left his lips as he reluctantly decided to let it go. No need to force her to retreat to her room now, though he felt like he really should. "A bit tired? Very well." Clearly he didn't believe her regarding this just yet, but it didn't seem like the man felt too enthusiastic about sending her away from him. "I don't need you dying on me now, understand?" His voice although teasing had revealed the worry that was there. The thought of Rose dying... it wasn't a thought he wished to entertain. It felt as if the spring of his life had finally come to him as she had appeared, for it to suddenly end so abruptly... no he wouldn't allow it. It was a possessive thought, and as worrying at that was considering the type of man he was, he simply wouldn't desire to lose her. The more he was falling for her, the more he was setting himself up for some sort of disappointment, or worse; some sort of disaster. The man rarely allowed himself to hope for much, but Rose was an exception that he was allowing. If he was to lose her...

He closed his eyes as he brushed aside the thought, his expression becoming oddly grim. A clear change from his earlier playful mood. Now that he was grounding himself again, his mind was trailing back to the Black Market once more, perhaps Rose would desire to know? After all, it was a matter that concerned an all too annoying shrew, and said shrew was without a doubt up to no good. "Earlier..." Emory paused, almost hesitating as he considered his next words with care, not wishing to alarm Rose too much, "I received a report that the shrew had entered the Black Market and had come in contact with my fa- Laurence Barker." He stopped himself from calling Laurence Barker his father, even if that fact were true, the man had been no father to him. He would never acknowledge the man since he had been complacent in the torture he had to suffer. His hand's trembled slightly, a finger tapping an agitated beat against the table, a rare sign of anxiety that Emory would display, something that he had thought he'd gotten rid of since he only used to do so when he had been a mere boy. "From what my sentries reported, she got her hands on the drug that Eunice used on... me." His expression tensed, bad memories lurking behind the depths of his golden eyes, all vibrancy draining from his face.

"I had told Laurence to discard it all as soon as I took control over the manor, but it seemed as if he was holding onto quite the stock without my knowledge. Though, I should've known better that he wouldn't listen to a single word I say." The nervous tapping only seemed to intensify until Emory's eyes turned to the motion and abruptly moved his hand so that the action would stop. He was quiet for a few moments, though he sighed, "I know Demelza was as wicked as her mother, but I wouldn't think that she was such a fool." As if Emory wouldn't know, did she not think the man had the Black Market under constant surveillance? Obviously not. And what was Laurence playing at? Emory knew that the man was aware he was constantly being watched too, just in case he stepped out of line. Although, the only answer was perhaps the man was leaping at the opportunity for profit... like he always would do. A heavy sigh left his lips, the man raising his head to look at Rose, an apologetic expression crossing his face, "After tomorrow, I might have to leave for a few days to take care of the situation." It was something that he couldn't allow to continue for much longer, after all his father is a stubborn man and quite sneaky when he desired to be. As much as he didn't wish to entertain the thought of having to leave for an extended period of time, there were plenty of people that needed to answer for their incompetence, and a marriage offer that he was going to solve permanently. He wouldn't put it past Demelza either to try and drug him if she got the opportunity to, and he'd much rather not have that threat lingering over his head. It was quite difficult for him to recover from the effects when he was a child, after being away from it for so long... he didn't want to entertain the thought. Just remembering the pitiful state he had been when his mother finally had the sense to drag him away from Laurence's brothel, the boy was a shivering wreck and didn't speak for months. He'd much rather not return to such dark days so soon.

Rose raised her eyebrows at his words, finding this situation almost amusing. She leaned forward slightly, gazing at him with curiosity. “We would have?” She inquired. She knew completely as to what he was referring to. “I don’t think you realize just how much control I can exert in a situation such as that. One kiss will be plenty. If it helps, I shall allow you to kiss me right before I head to bed this evening. That way you can allow yourself to focus on your work without anything more happening. Besides, I do not want for you to feel as though you are forcing a situation on me,” She paused, thinking about how she wanted to phrase her next comment,” Though it isn’t as if I would mind what you are suggesting.” She was well aware how men acted in situations such as this. Emory must be craving that physical contact, especially since he was finally allowing himself to feel his emotions.

She noticed that he didn’t seem to believe a word that she said. It was actually quite funny. She would have to work hard to assure him that she was indeed alright and not overly tired. It was something that would take quite a long time. “I can assure you I won’t. At least, I have no plans on dying anytime soon.” She promised. She would do everything in her power to keep herself healthy. It would be helpful for her to stop in while they were visiting the kingdom to get some extra medicine just in case. She wouldn’t want for Emory to have to rush back like he had before. She still felt terrible that he had felt so panicked over her well-being. “I don’t think I ever properly thanked you for going to get me the medicine from the kingdom. So thank you.” She spoke in a soft tone.

Her expression grew more serious as Emory’s did, listening to everything he was saying. It actually worried her some, though she appreciated his honesty. She had been interested in the conversation as it seemed to be quite important. It had changed his mood from what it was at the lake as well. She scoffed at the mention of the Gallovan’s daughter, shaking her head. “I wish that I couldn’t believe that, but I do not put it past her. I am so sorry that she has done so.” Her words were sincere. There was something in the way that he was currently speaking that worried her. She knew of his prior actions and was sure he would act like that again. She just didn’t know the true extent of what he went to.

Her gaze fell at the mention of him having to leave to handle the situation. It hurt to think that she wouldn’t see him for a few days, especially as they were beginning to grow closer. “You do what you must. I will not protest or try to stop you. I know you have your duties. I will gravely miss you while you are gone.” She spoke truthfully. She knew it would give her some time to get some extra cleaning done. She still didn’t like the idea of him putting himself in danger, but she would have to deal with her worry later. “Just promise you will try to stay as safe as you can. I don’t need for you to come back all battered and bruised. I am the one who is ill enough for the both of us.” She tried to lighten the situation with a joke, though she knew it probably didn’t work.

Emory's expression couldn't help but thaw at Rose's concern, it set him at ease slightly although he said softly in response, "I don't think I should be the one you're supposed to be worrying about." Of course, the man was capable and was quite used to doing what he needed to do. Very rarely did he get severely hurt, after all he had to be swift on his feet in case the worst situation possible could happen. "But, I promise I'll stay safe and return to you in one piece." He chuckled at that, his golden eyes slightly brightening again as he forced himself from sinking too deeply into memories better left forgotten. Although he had told Rose what he had went through, he had spared her most of the more... distasteful details, and as he had been in a frenzied state it wasn't as if he could go into such detail to truly allow her to understand the nightmare that had been his childhood. Perhaps, she worried if he would return to her in such a horrid state again? The thought was sweet, but he found it unnecessary. He could take care of himself quite well, and he was skilled with a blade. Without a doubt the man would come back to her safely, he simply must.

Turning the conversation back to a lighter topic, as he found that discussing matters of his past would probably begin to sour the mood between the two, his lips played at a rather soft smile as he said, "As for another matter, I don't think it would be wise if we get too ahead of ourselves. Just one," He raised a single finger, "One kiss is acceptable for now. After all, I still need to be a gentleman, I can't simply cross that line just yet... as tempting as it is." He added the last words begrudgingly, although he knew quite well if he started he wouldn't be able to stop himself. Besides, he had plenty of experience that the man could draw on, and being quite confident in this fact, he knew that would be certainly an all too bad idea. "I don't need to start renewing bad habits that I used to have." He purred those words as he leaned back in his chair, his golden eyes warm in the light of the dining hall, "I truly don't think you'll be able to handle that. Besides, it's not as if I had revealed to the public that I'm officially courting you yet." One kiss he knew wouldn't be able to satisfy him, he knew that. But, he was a man of his word at the very least, and even if a single kiss would torture him... it would have to do. But, it seemed as if he in his own way had agreed to giving the kiss that he owed her.

The smell of food soon wafted into the dining hall, and not too long after a rather flustered Viola would come as she had set the table with platters of food, though it certainly seemed as if she put a bit more effort than normal. Perhaps, in her own way celebrating Rose and Emory beginning to trust one another on a deeper level... and admittedly the maid had been eavesdropping here and there on the two's conversation, though remaining tightlipped. She wouldn't tell a single soul on this rather different side of Emory she was seeing, after all she couldn't believe it quite yet herself. The maid had stepped away from the table, smiling at both of them as she retreated from the dining hall, going elsewhere in the mansion to try and give the two more privacy. The action certainly was appreciated by Emory, though he knew the woman's red face was due to her not expecting the man to be talking in such a way to Rose. Even if he'd not spoken to a woman in such a manner after coming to the manor, it wasn't as if he'd forgotten. It was old memories he was drawing on anyways, things that he simply couldn't really forget, although he didn't find a use for them... until now that is.

“And yet I will still worry about you despite that. I will blame it on my affection for it and leave it at that.” Rose didn’t know how much more she should say, knowing that Emory most likely didn’t want her worry to be spared upon him. “I am aware you can handle yourself well in any situation you find yourself in. I just do not want for something to overwhelm you in a way where you might not be able to protect yourself fully.” It was the lightest way she could put it. Her expression softened as he did his best to reassure her. She just didn’t want for him to go through any of the harm he had before. He seemed to finally be moving to a time of happiness. She wanted to keep him relaxed and joyful. She believed he deserved it after all he had been through. Her hands sat in her lap, fingers fiddling with each other. She didn’t want to let her nervousness about the situation fully show.

She appreciated the change in subject once again. She didn’t want to dwell on everything that could be happening in a few days time. Besides, she always told herself that she wanted to enjoy living in the moment. “I do appreciate your attempts to stay as a gentleman. I believe one kiss can satisfy me for the time being.” She agreed. It wasn’t as if she was going to push the other male forward into something he wouldn’t completely want to do. She wouldn’t mind waiting herself. She knew it would be a special moment for them when they were eventually there. “I don’t think the public would believe you if you were to shout you were courting me. After all, I am dead in everyone’s eyes for the time being. Now if you were to announce it at the ball then things would work a bit better.” She reminded. She seemed a bit smug that she convinced him to give her the kiss that she was so desperately owed for his teasing earlier as well.

She turned her gaze to look towards Viola as the maid began to carry the trays from the kitchen. She was surprised to see the vast amount of things that she had cooked, though it smelt amazing. Her stomach growled gently. She had forgotten just how hungry she actually was. “Thank you Viola.” Her words were polite as the maid left the hall. She moved to begin to eat then, relaxing in her chair some. Her exhaustion was hitting her more the later she stayed awake. “I might be able to have a bit of the barracks cleaned up by the time you return back to the manor. I am sure it will look much better to you. Then you can start teaching me how to use a sword.” She commented innocently, knowing he would probably end up rolling his eyes at her words. She was clearly excited for the training and it showed.

Emory was satisfied at her reply, though he chuckled, "I suppose not, but I wasn't planning to until the ball anyways." After all, he'd much rather have it be officially announced at a time where the confusion could be dealt with then and there. Part of him was nervous about it, however the majority of him was eager to claim to the world that Rose was his, and his alone. It wasn't as if he wanted to hide her away however, that was far from it. She was a lovely woman, someone who he was quickly coming to admire, even if he still didn't quite understand how she kept onto her cheer and probably never will. She was everything that he wasn't, and he was already set on cherishing her dearly. It simply burned him with rage that Blaine had ever mistreated her in such a way to make her the pitiful sight she had been when she had arrived. As his thoughts were turning rather somber, he had to chuckle at the smug expression on her face. So cute, he almost wished to plant a kiss on her then and there, but he restrained himself, merely shaking his head in exasperation.

However, as his attention shifted to the rather generous amount of food Viola had prepared, Emory too hadn't expected how hungry he had been. Did he even eat earlier? Perhaps not. It wasn't uncommon for Emory to skip over meals as the man usually was preoccupied over other matters to take care of his health, even dinner was something he skipped over if he was busy enough. As they had begun to eat, Emory had paused as she brought up the barracks although due to the sinking feeling in his chest he already knew where she was going with this. As anticipated, the young lord had rolled his eyes at Rose, shaking his head as he grumbled, "I must have been bewitched to have agreed to teach you." Emory's eyes narrowed at her, though considering the rather innocent tone she was using it was quickly becoming a tone he was weak to. A heavy sigh left his lips, dropping his gaze down to the food as he added in another annoyed grumble, "You're certainly not playing fair."

He wouldn't elaborate, it was already enough she had managed to get him to agree to give her a kiss, and train her in the art of the sword. If she knew she could simply twist him around her finger with the softest plea, he had a sinking suspicion that would be nothing but trouble. Never had he been such a pushover, rolling over at the slightest innocent voice and soft smile. He really had gotten soft ever since Rose came to the mansion, and he was certain she was well aware of such a fact. "When we do begin, I expect you to not do anything too rash. I don't want you to accidentally hurt yourself." His voice had returned to his usual serious tone, obviously fretting over her wellbeing, "And if I'm too rough, please tell me." It was a clear warning too, as Emory wasn't sure how much strength he could put into his blows for it to go over serious enough without being far too easy on Rose. If she wanted to learn, he would oblige. After all, it have been years since he picked up a wooden sword, and he certainly wasn't the thin-framed boy he had been, he had filled out a lot since his boyhood and had the hard muscles to prove it. Even now, he felt a sinking feeling in his chest as he looked over Rose again from where he sat. He really needed to be careful with her, else he would hurt her. Clearly, the worry wasn't too hard to read upon his face, but it seemed like his worries would not fade until they actually began training sessions with each other.

“I am rather excited to be seen by the public again. I never thought I would say those words, but I miss being able to go to dinners and balls.” Rose admitted. It was another reason as to why she was so excited for the ball to be the moment where she was revealed to be alive. She would finally be able to have some sense of normalcy, even though she now lived much further than she originally had. “I will not be looking forward to everyone urging me for particular duties again though. If you believed the court to be annoying before, just wait until they find out you are courting me. They will be ten times worse.” She spoke truthfully. She hoped it wouldn’t be too much on Emory. They would be getting many more invitations to events, though they didn’t have to go to each one they were invited to. She was more than happy to make a few public appearances every now and then.

A smile broke onto her face as she watched the way the young lord grumbled at her words. “I must say my beauty can do that to a man.” She joked lightly, gently flipping her hair behind her shoulder as she offered him a wink. “You can only blame the affection you feel for me. If it wasn’t for it, you wouldn’t be willing to do everything you are. I swear to not use it to my advantage though.” She assured. It was clear to her that Emory was becoming smitten with her presence. She continued to eat, enjoying every bite of the food Viola prepared. She hadn’t expected for it to taste as amazing as it did. The maid was a wonderful cook and she planned on reminding her of it when she saw her next.

“I will ease into it. I have never trained with a sword before and I will know my limits. Besides, I believe you to be a proper teacher. If you see I am struggling and I am too stubborn to admit it might be time for a break, help me realize that I need one.” She mused. She knew that he stubbornness might come out in full force at the beginning of their training. It had when she originally learned how to use a bow. She wouldn’t be surprised if it did again. “I swear that I will. I do not want to be hurt and I know you do not want for me to be hurt either.” She admitted. She place her fork down and stuck her hand across the table with her pinky raised. It was a rather childish thing to do for a promise, but she figured it right. She wanted to see a smile back on his face. She understood the topic was a serious one. It didn’t require for him to seem as though he would break her with the lightest of touches.

Emory could imagine that she would desire to step once more into the public eye, it was what she was used to. He had to occasionally go to public events, but it wasn't unusual if the man refused to allow himself to be seen by the public. After all, Emory wasn't a very expressive man when in the company of strangers, nor was he particularly friendly with strangers either. Perhaps the man would be different once his position would change politically? He would have to force himself to be at least slightly more approachable... though, the compromise being that he still would hold to his distaste regarding people touching him, especially those who were on bad terms with him; which there was plenty. However, with time it could be better, if only for Rose's benefit. He certainly wouldn't want to put a damper on her public events due to his own discomfort. But, even if he knew the court would become far worse, his face wrinkled in obvious distaste, but he didn't protest instead saying, "Of course they would. I can't say that I'm surprised, but it'll be inevitable." He would not allow himself to turn tail and hide just because of the foolish court's gossip, and if the situation got too out of hand he could always pull a few strings. Emory prided himself on having quite the dirt on the nobility, things that certain families had done which would put them in disgrace. And he knew most of the nobles had the sense to not take things too far.

He had to laugh at her joke, "Ah, please do have mercy on this wretched soul. I don't think my heart could take much more of your beauty." However, as Rose had continued to speak the man had grumbled, "Your stubbornness is a blessing and a curse." He shook his head at her in exasperation, knowing quite well he would have to be patient with her, not that he didn't think he could. In fact, Rose seemed to bring out a more patient and tolerant side of him that he wasn't even aware he had. But, knowing how soft he tended to be with her, he almost wasn't sure if he could even manage to do such a thing... well perhaps that wouldn't be true. At least when it came to her safety, Emory was immovable in his own stubbornness to keep her safe. But, as these thoughts swirled about through his mind, he had paused in eating as Rose had stuck her hand out across the table, pinky extended. He blinked a few times as if surprised, though a bit of laughter left his lips as he copied the action, linking his pinky finger with hers, "A pinky promise, hmm? I can't remember the last time I've done this." Perhaps it had been the second time in his life, the last being with his half-siblings long ago. He barely remembered what the promise had been about, but he did know he had been puzzled by the action much to his half-siblings' confusion. The memory wasn't unpleasant for once, a rare innocent memory in the sea of unfortunate occurrences.

Slowly, he unlinked his pinky finger from hers, returning to finishing off his plate, waiting until Rose was done a quiet huff had left his lips as he stood from his chair, remembering all too well that Rose was indeed exhausted. She needed to rest, and of course his priority would be her before anything else. Usually, Emory would simply say goodnight and dismiss himself from the table, but considering how things had changed between them, it seemed as if he was actively trying to venture out of his usual comfort zone. The man had crossed the table to her side, his hands resting on the side of her chair as he leaned over, smiling gently at her as he spoke softly, "Don't think I've forgotten that you're tired." His hands had pulled back the chair just enough, and in one swift movement the young lord had scooped her up in his arms, carrying her in bridal style. Emory certainly didn't find her heavy in the slightest, a chuckle leaving his lips as his golden eyes were quite playful, "I promise I won't keep you up much longer, princess." With that, the man began walking, carrying Rose up the stairway toward the direction of her room, though once he reached her room he had gently released her from his hold, waiting until she could steady herself as he paused, tilting his head, "Hm.. am I forgetting something?" Of course he was just teasing her, unable to resist. It was rare for Emory to be in such a playful mood, but it seemed as if he was enjoying himself.

“At least they might be a bit more bearable if my father is able to silence them. I do want to apologize ahead of time though as I know it will be retched when you first announce that you are courting me.” Rose held some sympathy in her gaze. She had grown up around many of the members that were still on the current court. They had seen her blossom from a young girl to who she was today. The news that she was to be married to a man that they all hated would be one of the worst things that they heard in a while. It would be amusing to her though. The only reaction she truly cared to see was Blaine’s. She wanted to watch as he fell into despair over his own actions. He deserved to suffer and lose everything he held dear to him. She imagined Emory felt the same way about the man.

She smiled brightly as she heard the laugh leave his lips. Seeing him at ease once more brought her great comfort. She wouldn’t have thought that being around him would allow for her to feel this way. After all, she believed he hated her to an extent only a few weeks prior. The change was welcome. “You will be able to thank my father for that. I am sure you already know just how stubborn he can be. As they say, a daughter is like her father,” She clicked her tongue before tilting her head slightly. “I do believe that it is a good thing I appreciate you much more than he does. It would be a shame to hate such a handsome man.” She gazed at him with seductive eyes, blinking slowly. She moved to take another bite of her food before she spoke again.

“I have never broken a pinky promise before. My sister Elizabeth made me promise to keep one of her secrets back when I was still a child and I have yet to tell anyone. I can assure you that this will not be a promise I break.” Her words were serious. She tilted her chin up some to show that she meant it. She was grateful that he didn’t waste time in linking his pinky with hers. She pulled her hand back and finished what was left on her plate. A happy hum left her lips as she reached to take her last sip of tea. She raised an eyebrow as she watched the other male stand from where he sat, moving to her side of the table. “Emory, what are you doing—?” She broke out with a sound of surprise as she was lifted from her seat. She quickly grasped her arms around his neck, gazing up at him with wide eyes.

It didn’t take long before she was laughing, head tilted completely back and eyes shut. She didn’t think she had experienced this much joy before. Her laugh faded into giggles as she gazed up at him. Her heart swelled at the chuckle he let out. She was a bit worried he might find her uncomfortable to carry, but he didn’t seem to have any issue with doing so. She waited patiently until he set her down, using her hands to flatten her dress. She turned to face him fully. His comment caused for her to roll her eyes. She reached her hand up to gently grasp near the collar of his shirt. “Oh, come here you fool.” She pulled him down carefully to her height before connecting their lips.

Emory usually wasn't one to be taken by surprise. The man pride himself on this one fact, however it seemed as if Rose would truly surprise the man by taking the initiative, as he had a rather smug expression on his face before she had grasped near the collar of his shirt. Before he could utter her name, her lips was upon his and his mind went blank. Emory had not kissed a woman for quite a long amount of time, to feel pressure upon his lips again was an alien feeling, one that he thought would strike fear into him... but it didn't. The warm press of her lips against his own sent sparks of pleasure through his body, chasing away the cold creep of fear that would usually keep him immobilized. However, it seemed as if Emory wasn't about to react to her, that was until the man's hand came to rest upon her waist, drawing her against his body as his lips moved hungrily against her own.

He never thought he had been starved in such a way, never having desired another due to his own terror. However, she had sparked such an unexpected hunger in himself that he'd thought would never come to him again. The pressure of his lips grew more demanding, more needy against her own, as much as Emory - if he was thinking straight - probably would have wanted to give her a soft, gentle kiss; clearly the situation had gone past the point of him being able to reign himself in now. His lips parted from hers, taking in a breath if only for a few seconds before pressing against hers again, one of his hands coming up to entangle in her hair, his lips parting against hers as the tip of his tongue lightly brushed against her bottom lip... only for him to knock some sense into himself. Abruptly, his lips parted from hers, his breath quick as he swiftly moved his hands away from her, his golden eyes dark with desire as he gazed down at her. It seemed almost as if he were in a daze before he closed his eyes and took in a deep breath to try to calm himself down, putting his hands behind his back as if restraining himself.

Clearing his throat, he then spoke, although even his tone seemed a bit strained, "I think it would be best for us to stop here." A sly smile crossed his face as his golden eyes gleamed in the dim lighting, "I don't think I'll have the self control to stop." His body felt as if on fire, a sensation that wasn't unwelcome. But, it would be better for the both of them if he didn't push things much further, they did have plans tomorrow after all. And he needed to calm himself down enough to sleep, a task easier said than done at this moment in time. Inclining his head to her he said softly, "Goodnight, Rose." His hands tightly grasped each other behind his back, digging his fingernails into his palms, though a pleasant smile was on his face, he was clearly trying to conceal his desperation at this moment in time for her.

Worry filled Rose as she waited for a response from him to her kiss. She believed that she might have shocked him with her actions too much for him to respond. It was only when his lips began to move against her own. Her thoughts were quieted and pushed away as she was drawn close to him, allowing for the moment to lead where it might. There was something different about this kiss compared to ones she experienced before. She didn’t know if it was the desire that the two shared for each other or something else. There was a fire in her stomach that she hadn’t felt before. One arm draped carelessly over his shoulder while the hand that held onto his tunic moved to be behind his neck.

Her eyes slowly opened as he pulled away completely, breath heavy. Her lips were still parted and her eyes held lust for the moment to continue. She knew that it wouldn’t be the best for them to though. Emory wanted for things to be taken slow and she would honor his wish. “I do not believe I would have any control to stop either.” She confessed. Her tone was quiet as she cleared her throat gently. She offered him a smile, her chest still rising and falling quickly. “I will see you in the morning then. Goodnight Emory.” Her response was kind. She leaned up to press a soft kiss to his cheek, his beard tickling her lips. She pulled back fully then. She slowly turned and reached for the handle to her door. Her hand gripped it while turning it, slowly stepping in.

She paused halfway through the door to face him once again. She seemed to have recovered from the moment, a smug expression back on her face. “That was two kisses, not one.” It was a light tease, something she couldn’t stop herself from saying. She stepped fully inside the room then before closing the door behind her. She put her face into her hands to stop herself from squealing out of joy. Her face was flushed red. She took a few steps before dropping her hands and taking multiple deep breaths. She moved towards her bed, taking a seat. She knew she needed to bathe, but the moment was still far too fresh in her mind for her to forget. She almost hoped Viola wouldn’t come in like she normally did that evening. She felt as though she needed to process what happened. It was one of the best things to have happened to her in quite a long time.

Emory's tense muscles had yet to relax as Rose had spoken, though he had been a bit surprised when the woman had placed a soft kiss on his cheek. The soft pressure of her lips upon his cheek was an all too unfair tease as he could only watch her, speechless. His heart quickened in his chest as she had paused halfway through the door, part of him, the side he was desperately trying to suppress wanted her to invite him in, to continue their moment of passion. The more logical side himself was silently scolding and feeling ashamed of his rather unbecoming behavior, but this was short-lived as she had teased him. He chuckled, his golden eyes brightening up slightly with his laughter, "Keep it up and I'll make it three." Although his tone was light-hearted, he was serious. Luckily enough for the last shreds of his sanity, she had closed the door behind her, leaving him standing motionless before her door.

The man allowed the remnants of pleasure to flow through him, giving him some time to remember the feeling, to savor it. He closed his eyes as he heaved a heavy sigh, muttering under his breath, "What are you doing to me?" Yet, as soon as he whispered such a quiet question, his back straightened up as he heard Viola's voice behind him, "Lord May? Are you alright?" The man forced his facial expression to remain under control as he looked over his shoulder to see Viola's very bewildered expression, turning to face her he had spoken quickly, "Y-yes, I'm fine." Better than fine... well almost. The insatiable need that coiled in his gut was an irritating thing, but his hasty response seemed to only make the maid cross her arms, a knowing smile crossing her face as she looked him over. Once, twice. The man suppressed the urge to squirm under her scrutiny as the woman burst out into laughter, "You're acting just like Sigric." Emory's expression turned to one of embarrassment, only slightly annoyed to be compared to Viola's eldest son, granted he supposed he had been caught in a less than stellar situation. A sigh had left his lips as Viola had taken in a breath to stop laughing, her eyes gentle though an all too knowing look came to her eyes, "Well, you'd best head to bed then. Judging from how you look, it seems you'll have trouble sleeping anytime soon." More color crept to Emory's face as he coughed, grumbling as he took steps toward the direction of his room, "I don't remember you ever being so bold."

Viola smiled gently at him, "Well, how can I help it? I have been taking care of you since you were a boy. Now, go on." Emory's expression had softened up slightly, although he was still quite embarrassed as he retreated to his room with rather hasty steps as Viola had shook her head at his retreating figure, her expression softening slightly as she whispered under her breath, "I'm glad at the very least, you're finally acting normal." She thought she would never see the day Emory would act like a person would, with a range of new emotions and expressions she had never seen before upon his face. It made her overwhelmingly relieved to say the least. I can't wait to rub this in Merewin's face! She was quite protective over Emory against her unruly husband, mostly due to the fact her husband nearly tried to murder the young man. A sigh left her lips as she looked over to Rose's door, slowly approaching and knocking gently on the door, but not coming in just yet, giving Rose some time if needed to calm herself down. After all, Viola was quite sharp, she had an idea of what had happened, though she would not pry. "Lady Barclay, are you alright?" She called out in a gentle tone, as she was going through her routine of preparing Rose's bath and cleaning up the kitchen and dining hall before leaving for the night.

Rose had only smiled at his warning before she had shut the door. The smile hadn’t faded as she found herself laying back on her bed, eyes focused solely on the ceiling above her. There was a part of her that desperately wanted for Emory to have followed her into her room. She could only imagine that the young lord felt the same way. She wished dearly that she allowed herself to act on such desires, but knew that this wouldn’t be the only time for them do so such. This was only the start of what she assumed would be a beautiful relationship. With Emory mentioning his plans to let it be known that he was courting her, she knew what would eventually follow. She let out a happy sigh at the thoughts that filled her mind.

She jumped slightly at the knock on her door, hope filling her chest. She wouldn’t say directly that she was disappointed it was only Viola, though it might show on her expression. She raised a hand to fix her hair some before she stood and made her way to the door. She opened it to see the maid standing there. The older woman seemed to still have the joy that she possessed from their earlier conversation. “I am alright Viola.” She assured as she stepped to the side to let her enter. She closed the door gently behind her. She didn’t say anything for a few moments, only moving to her wardrobe to pull out a sleeping gown for after her bath. She then sat in front of her vanity. She picked up her hairbrush before combing through the knots that accumulated in her hair.

“Dinner was lovely tonight. I do not think I have told you how wonderful of a cook you are.” She commented as she brushed her hair slowly. She kept her gaze focused on the mirror that sat in front of her. She paused for a moment, holding the brush in her right hand. She seemed to be deep in thought. “Emory told me that he might be gone for a few days after tomorrow. If you would like, you can have that time off. I am more than capable to care for myself. Besides you deserve to have the time with your family.” She offered. She truly meant every word she said. “You have done so much for me since I have arrived. I just want for you to have a well deserved break.” She added after a few moments of silence. She then returned to brushing her hair until all tangles were out. She stood and made her way towards the tub, waiting patiently for it to be ready.

Viola had caught the expression on Rose's face as she had opened the door. It was one that she knew very well herself, though she wasn't offended by it in the least. After all, Rose's and Emory's budding relationship was still very much fresh, it was inevitable that that the two would seek one another. A small smile crossed her face as she had nodded her head at Rose's answer, entering the room as Rose had stepped aside. The silence that settled, Viola hadn't broken and allowed to continue as the maid set to filling up Rose's tub, humming a quiet melody as she did so. It was times like this that the maid's mind would wander as she went through the motions, though mostly it was filled with happiness about the new couple, unable to keep a smile upon her face.

"Hm?" The woman paused, looking up from where she was positioned as she looked over at Rose. However, her words she found was touching as Viola had laughed, "Oh thank you, but I can only thank years of practice." She hummed as she looked back to the tub, "My husband and my boys always eat so much." It was rare for the maid to speak of her family while she was at the estate, after all she always had focused upon her duties and there was little time for her to bring up her rather large family. But, the tenderness was there in her voice as she spoke of them, as much as she enjoyed working at the estate, she certainly did miss her family often. Most of the time her sister would pitch in when Viola was off at the estate and had to work later into the night, as the woman had young children as well. However, the maid had stopped in her cleaning as an expression of surprise crossed her face at Rose's words, "Lady Barclay? Are you sure?"

She seemed hesitant to take the offer, as she had truly never missed a day unless Emory had told her otherwise. The woman looked quite dumbfounded at the moment, though her eyebrows furrowed as a light frown crossed her face upon thinking about Emory. Ah, yes... she wouldn't be surprised if he left for a few days. Worry darkened her eyes for a few moments, a sigh leaving her lips. She couldn't get the previous tone of voice he had used from ringing in her mind, though the woman straightened up from her bent over position, saying with a soft smile upon her face, "If you insist, then I'll gratefully take it. Thank you." She bowed politely to Rose, a habit of formality of course. She was more than grateful for the short vacation, as there was plenty she probably was neglecting at her home that she needed to straighten out. "Well," She paused, looking at the tub filled with warm water then looked back to Rose and smiled again, "I'll get out of your way. Goodnight, Lady Barclay." With that, the woman had left the room, closing the door behind her with a quiet click as she retreated down the stairs, finishing up her last task of cleaning the away the last of the dirtied dishes before closing the mansion door and leaving for the night.

...
The morning sun broke through the window of Emory's room, the man's golden eyes opening slowly as a grunt left his lips. He of course, didn't sleep much during the night, and as such his face appeared rather haggard as he felt tempted to pull the blankets over him. His body curled in on itself, shivers running up and down his spine, recalling his last hazy moments before he slept. Ah. He closed his eyes tight, a heavy sigh leaving him as he slowly sat up, running a hand through his ruffled hair. Although he felt little shame in his actions, he did feel... embarrassed. He wasn't a boy, now was he? He should have better self control, after all it was simply a kiss... easier said than done of course. The man stood up slowly, peering outside the window as he squinted. Normally, the sun wouldn't be so bright... would it? Surprise soon filtered through him as he realized he actually slept past the first light of dawn. That was certainly very unusual, no matter what would occur during the night, he would never sleep past dawn.

His golden eyes shifted to the vial that remained untouched for quite a few weeks upon his bedside table. His hand reached out, picking up the bottle as the sunlight reflected off of it. It felt so strange to not have to rely on it for sleep. Emory shook his head, putting the vial back upon the desk as he stretched out his cramped limbs, his tired mind slowly attempting to catch up with him. I have to go out with Rose today... I have to go out with Rose today! The thought had repeated itself in his mind, the man immediately rushed to his wardrobe, almost slamming open the door as his heart felt as if it were beating out of his chest. Never had he felt so flustered in his life as he looked through the clothes, inspecting each clothing item with scrutiny. Another change in his usual behavior, normally he would just pick up anything, but now he was taking a bit too much time with his choices, going over each clothing item once... twice... thrice. An odd change for the usually stoic and cold man indeed, however some irrational part of him wanted to look as good as possible for Rose. Such a silly thing that he normally wouldn't think twice about had now consumed most of his time.

The bath helped ease Rose’s mind that evening. The warm water relaxed her tense muscles. Her mind emptied as she sat in the warm water as well. It was actually quite peaceful. She hadn’t expected herself to calm so quickly after what happened. She ended up sitting there until the water went cold. She stood slowly, reaching for her cloth to dry herself off. She managed to drag herself to her bed, falling asleep rather quickly. Her dreams were pleasant. They mostly were just thoughts of what the future could hold for the two lovebirds. Each flash of a dream felt like it lasted an eternity. It was rather soothing.

She woke early the next morning, though she would’ve preferred to sleep more. Her body had a terrible habit of forcing itself awake at the same time every day no matter how exhausted she was. She raised a hand to rub at her eyes while a groan left her lips. She truly had pushed herself more than she should’ve the day prior. She refused to let it show. Her pride wouldn’t allow her to and she didn’t want for Emory to worry about her well-being. He seemed to have enough on his mind already with the dealings in the black market. She slowly forced herself to remove the warm blankets that were over her. The process to stand was rather slow. She stretched while she made her way to the wardrobe.

A few hums left her while she looked through the dresses she had. She wanted to find something to wear that day that was a tad nicer than she normally would’ve. The idea could be blamed on wanting to impress Emory, but she wasn’t sure where it truly stemmed from. She soon decided on one, pulling it carefully from where it hung. She quickly changed into it before tightening the strings to her corset. She was quite skilled in doing so, having learned while still married to Blaine. She took a seat at the vanity to brush through her hair once more. She decided on some simple braids for the day. Once she was happy with her appearance, she left the room.

As she walked down the stairs, the sun was just beginning to make its way over the trees. She was a bit surprised that Emory had yet to wake up. She wouldn’t bother him though until he was ready to. The young lord deserved every bit of rest that he could get. She was aware of his issues when it came to getting proper sleep. She hoped that it might begin to change with his mood improving. It wasn’t long until she found herself in the kitchen. She prepared a quick cup of tea as it was too early for Viola to be at the manor. She brought the cup to the table, sitting once there. The quiet inside was something she welcomed. She could hear the faint chirping of birds outside. It was just another reminder that spring was finally arriving.

As Emory agonized over what he should wear, eventually the man had settled upon somewhat brighter colors, a more casual appearance to blend in with the crowds of the village... even if the material was far finer than what a typical villager would wear. Satisfied with his choices, he set out to get ready for the day, hastily moving toward the bathroom and going through his usual routine at a quickened and frenzied pace. However, due to him breaking the mirror much to his great regret now, the man had to simply attempt to make himself as presentable as he possibly could. Whether he realized it or not, due to him looking forward to this particular day, the man's usually tired face seemed a bit more youthful, as if a load of stress had finally been lifted from his tired shoulders. Of course there was still plenty for him to worry about, but those issues seemed so very far away for now, until he would reach the village later on.

Stepping from the bathroom after triple checking that he was at the very least presentable, Emory's heavy footsteps could be heard coming down the stairway, although at an all too noticeable quickened pace. Being dressed in more casual attire, the man appeared a bit more youthful, opting to allow his dark hair to lie free from being bound for once. His golden eyes were bright, although there was some exhaustion in the depths due to him unable to get much sleep during the night, he refused to allow that to get in the way of spending time with Rose. Slowing his pace down as he reached the bottom stair, he had approached the dining hall, seeing Rose sitting there made his heart flutter, a strange feeling indeed. With a smile crossing his face, he approached her, his hand resting near her on the table as he leaned over and gave her a soft, yet hesitant kiss on the cheek. Though, the hesitation was mostly due to him not wanting to stir up the strange hunger inside of him again, otherwise he wasn't even sure he would allow her to leave his grasp.

"Good morning." His voice was calm as he greeted her, leaning back as his gaze scanned over her. How... adorable. He truly never found anything cute before, but taking in Rose in her attire, it was enough to say he certainly seemed to approve. His hand raised upward to playfully wrap a braid around his finger, a soft smile crossing his face, "You look quite lovely today." A genuine compliment, and a rare one. Normally, Emory never gave out compliments, though this was probably due to the fact that he was in quite the good mood with her around. Such an improving mood would affect his words regarding her.

Rose perked up as she heard the familiar footsteps that belonged to the young lord. She was eager to spend the day with him, especially since they were to head into town. She hoped that things would go smoothly as she didn’t know the people’s full opinion on him. All she knew was of what Merewin and Viola thought. She wondered if they did have a negative view, would it be swayed by the change in his attitude with her around? It was a far-fetched idea. She looked towards the entrance to the hall as he finally stepped in. A soft smile came to her lips as a greeting to him. “Good morning,” She responded in a sweet tone. She placed her hand gently on top of his own that sat on the table for a moment before moving to finish the tea.

“As do you.” It was then that she noticed his hair was down that day. She couldn’t recall a time that she had seen it as such, yet she had to admit that she loved how it looked. “Your hair is down today. It looks nice.” She spoke truthfully. She slowly stood, reaching her hand forward to adjust a few strands. Once she was satisfied with how it looked, she hurried back into the kitchen to return the teacup. She then returned to his side. “Let us be off. I am rather excited for the day.” She confessed. She reached to gently take his hand, leading the way from the mansion. She kept her grip light as she walked with him. “Did you sleep well last night? You do seem a bit tired still.” She inquired. She only wanted to make sure that he would be feeling alright.

She racked her mind to try and think of anything she could tell him from the time she last saw from until the time she went to bed. “Oh! I gave Viola the time off for while you are to be gone these next few days. I assumed that it would be best for her and I can care for myself easily enough. She deserves the rest.” She was hoping that he wouldn’t be upset with her doing so. It wasn’t as if this would be the first time that she was left to her own devices before. She was unsure if any harm could befall her while stay at the manor by herself. She doubted that there could. After all, she had some faith in her abilities to protect herself and anyone could know Emory would be gone. She glanced over at him to see if she could read his reaction any.

Emory was surprised by her response, though his expression didn't change much, the man couldn't help but feel a tiny bit more pleased with himself for taking his time with his appearance. He waited patiently for her to go about putting the teacup back and once she had returned to his side, he had given her a soft smile as she approached him, allowing her to grab hold of his hand as he followed her. As usual, he would adjust his pace accordingly so that she wouldn't struggle to have to keep up with him, his fingers eventually entwining with hers as he held her hand, however as she asked if he slept well during the night, the man suspiciously seemed a lot more interested in looking away from her, "Well enough." A lie, though out of embarrassment more than anything else. It was a moment of weakness for him indeed, one that he didn't want to linger on too much due to his own pride.

As they continued walking, he was relieved that she had spoken again, his body visibly relaxing which was also a very suspicious reaction indeed. His gaze turned toward her then, raising an eyebrow at her words. He didn't find much of a problem with it, though he was a bit surprised she had gone ahead and done such a thing without telling him prior. But, now his mind had turned to her safety. Considering she would be alone at the manor for a few days, he wanted at least someone to keep an eye on her while no one was there. It would be a simple thing to do to get some of his sentries to guard the home, after all considering he was going into the village, he could make arrangements there. His sentries oftentimes were undercover, blending in among the populous, so it was a simple matter he could go and take of while they were out.

"I'm sure she's very appreciative." He knew Viola would appreciate the gesture, and it seemed as if Emory wasn't upset with her in the least. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze, beginning to enjoy the feeling of having contact with her as he looked ahead, amused, "Look at you, already beginning to take over the estate. I should probably hand over the rights to you now." Of course, he was merely joking as he winked at her, "Though, I suppose you'll inherit it sooner or later, isn't that right Lady Barclay?" He rarely used her honorific now due to her requesting him not to do so, but he couldn't help himself this moment in time.

It wasn't too long after that they approached Dusk's Respite, with the sun being rather high in the sky in the morning hours, the streets were abuzz with activity. Lively conversation floated upon the nice breeze flowing through as it seemed like Merewin's tavern was receiving quite the amount of customers. Considering his tavern was located in a very busy spot, Emory, filled with reluctance had begun to approach the tavern in question, though his gaze shifted to a scrawny boy who was hefting a keg of ale over his shoulder from the side of the tavern itself, his reddish-brown hair shining brightly in the sunlight as he huffed, though upon seeing Emory and Rose, the boy had dropped the keg of ale abruptly, his brown eyes wide as moons, "L-Lord May?" A brief sigh left the man's lips. This seemed like it would be a common reaction he would receive today. "Hello, Sigric. It's good to see you helping out around the tavern, is business going smoothly?" The boy grimaced, rolling his shoulder as he grumbled, "Good enough that father kept me here. I was supposed to go on a date today with Acelina... ah, don't let him know that I was complain', he'll have my hide!"

Emory chuckled, causing the boy's face to pale a bit as if he couldn't believe his ears, "I don't think you've much to worry about." This seemed to cause Sigric's shoulders to sag with relief, though his eyes seemed to frequently flicker to Rose. Obviously, the young boy seemed quite enamoured with the princess, though of course Emory didn't seem too pleased with that, his expression seeming to grow a tiny bit colder, though it didn't seem he had to say a single word further to him as he heard unsteady footfall behind him, "Boy, by Azeya's tits, what the hell is taking ya so long-" Emory sighed, putting his free head to his hand. There was the voice he wasn't looking forward to hearing again. "Oh, look who's here. Back to collect my hard earned money are ya, you no good bastard?" Emory's expression tensed as he turned to face Merewin, the other male having his arms crossed, a fierce scowl already upon his face, however this scowl was quick to fade as his gaze shifted to Rose, "Well now, look who's all prettied up? Viola was talking nonstop about ya, nearly talked my ear off all night she did! It's good to see you again, better than his ugly mug." His eyes narrowed at Emory which caused the man to frown back at Merewin. Clearly this encounter wasn't going off as smoothly as possible.
