Fandom My Little Pony Frontier

After his patrol Indicus went to the place labeled guard barracks on the map and after finding the officers quarters set down the few things he brought with him. There he went to the desk got out a journal and started reading about the old times he shared with his comrades during his military career. Most of which caused him to laugh and sigh, but all of them brought a sense of longing and nostalgia.

Arriving almost three weeks before any of the other ponies, Steel Heart had been helping Mayor Catchpenny get things set up for the new arrivals.

Using her magic and gift of speech, she was able to recruit many creatures into helping construct the living areas.

Separated from her friends and family by her mission, she had felt very lonely these past weeks.

Hearing a sigh echo down the hall, Steel Heart fluttered silently towards the sound.

When she was less the a meter from Indicu's back she softly landed on the ground behind him.

She could feel an aura of sadness, and yet, a strange fond happy sensation.

Steel Heart had never felt such a complex range of emotions coming from one pony.

She shook her head from side to side trying to decide if it was in fact just one pony.

Blind as she was, she was a bit confused as she called out " Hello?. . Is some pony there?"

Indicus turned to the voice surprised that someone managed to come behind him without a sound. "Yes there is." Indicus took a look at the pony that owned the voice to find a pink blind flutter pony mare in-front of him. The sight struck him as odd seeing as their society was very isolationist. "My name is Indicus, currently the only guard of the town but hopefully that will change soon and I can get back to being retired." a wave of irritation and a bit of anger came off him but was not directed at the flutter pony.

With a cheerful smile and a soft laugh she replied " It's very nice to meet you Mr. Indicus. I'm Steel Heart, but most of my friends just call me Steely"

Tilting her head, she expressed some concern " You don't seem like you like your assignment very much.. I bet it's gotta be hard to come out of retirement and come all this way."

Here empty eyes glinted in the reflective light as she continued " But ya know, this place has a lot of beauty to it if you look hard enough"

She then started laughing at the absurdity of what she had said. " Oh my, that didn't sound right coming from me."

She took a step closer to get a better feel for his presence, before smiling and re-phrasing- " What I mean is, I'm not to happy to have left home myself; but I have found lots of neat things in this strange new land.

She then rose a few inches from the stone floor to flutter silently, with a strange serenity about here.

In soft voice she mused- " It's strange how life take you places you never thought in a million years you would be."

She then snickered to herself- "But listen to me, prattling on. I'll let you get back to your reading.."

As she turned to walk away, she paused in another moment of perfect silence to add- " If you have some extra time though.. I could show you around. so to speak"

"Sounds like something that would be interesting, probably is a good idea to learn more about this place. So sure I'll come find you if I have some extra time available, until we meet again Steel Heart." Indicus replied with a smile, something about her cheerfulness making it impossible not to. Indicus thought about what she said and had to agree life did like to throw it's own twists at you.

Steel heart fluttered silently down the halls towards her room when she came across some strange claw marks in the tile.

as she walked closer to investigate a shadow loomed in distant hall.

Slowly it grew closer and closer, With Steelheart completely unaware of the approaching danger.

As she looked closely at the claw mark she remarked " These almost look like..-"

Suddenly the silhouette of a large beast cast darkness across the hall as she screamed "Timber wolf ! "

Thunder almost didn't see the little pony stop, luckily he did. Poor kid probably wouldn't want to be run over... again.

"haha! It's okay. Mules aren't so bad! It's donkeys that get quite brutal." Kadje giggled, kicking his back hooves in the air in excitement, accidently pegging thunder in the nose.

"OWCH!" Thunder grumbled.

"Whoops. sorry."

Firecracker Struggled not to laugh at Thunder's expense.

Clearing his throat he announced- " Yes, well.. Here we are! welcome to the finest pyro tech lab a pony could ever ask for"

He proudly opened the door only to find that the house was just that, a house.

There were no machines, chemistry equipment, or anything that could be used to make fireworks.

There was a living area, a dining room with a simple set of chairs and a table.

An upstairs loft could be seen from the door way, but you could see the bed taking up much of it's room.

Stunned, he walked a little deeper inside asking to himself " I don't understand.. How am I suppose to start a new life here, when I have no gear? "

Turning to face the others he blushed and lowered his head " Well..maybe not the best."

He really wanted to impress Kadje and Thunder, and he also wanted to get started on his new project right away.

He felt a sense of embarrassment wash over him as he was at a loss for words.

Starry Night and Bright Heart ran to the dock. "No! We missed the boat," Starry Night said ready to whine like a filly. "Couldn't you teleport us there?" Bright Heart asked Starry Night. "I would but I don't know where it is," Starry Night said," but I can try." Bright Heart put her hooves on Starry Night's back and Starry Night's horn began to glow. "Wow. We're actually here," Starry Night said in surprise. They started looking around.

Indicus got up from his desk seat and headed outside to see how the others were doing and he was glad to see that everyone was not causing a bunch of chaos and that there were no surprise attacks from the local wildlife, well yet anyway. "Hopefully I can stay here until I can train a guard to be fit to take my position and replace myself then head back home."

"I guess we can look around, Bright Heart," Starry Night told Bright Heart. "Okay, that sounds good," Bright Heart says to Starry Night. They walk for a few minutes then turn, then again, then again. "I think we're lost," Bright Heart told Starry Night. "There's a building right there let's see what's in it," Starry Night told her and started walking in. Bright Heart followed her sister and saw one path and Starry Night saw two. "You take the left I'll take the right," Starry Night told Bright Heart and they both started walking.

Rushing down the hall Steelheart tried to yell with her soft voice " Timber wolf ! somepony anypony, help!"

Blind, she couldn't see what was chasing her, or where she was going.

All she could tell is something that sounded like one was chasing her down the halls.

meanwhile, Mayor Catchpenny was busy greeting all the ponies coming off the ship, when something caught his eye.

Two mares that he didn't see come off the boat suddenly appeared in the distance.

They didn't look to be heading towards the crowds; in fact, they seemed to be walking towards the undeveloped part of the town.

"That's odd.. I thought I shook every hoof that came off the boat." He blurted out to himself.

It was then he head a distant scream from the garrison- " Anypony help! "

"Oh sweet Celestia, what now?!" Mayor Catchpenny whined, feeling more flustered then usual.

Indicus cursed when he heard Steelheart's shout for help it was hard to pick up but it was there. As soon as Indicus heard the cry for help he sprung into action his solider mentality taking over as he sprinted. He eventually saw the timberwolf chasing Steelheart and he immediately lit up his horn and took the timberwolf in his magical grasp and threw it into the wall, he did not draw his blade knowing that it would be useless but instead tapped into a library of combat spells that he knew. Indicus would make sure that this timber wolf knew that it was in the wrong territory and make it an example to the forest predators that they were not welcome.

Steel Heart cowered in the corner, unable to see what was going on.

She never let her blindness scare her before, but she had never had a Timberwolf chasing her either.

With each crash or thump she heard, she flinched and covered her head with her hoofs.

The wolf Shakily stood to it's feet, sneering and growling at Indicus.

Looking to see one of it's branch like legs had been broken, the timber wolf let out a shrill howl as two more wolf shaped shadows began to descend on the area.

Sensing the danger, Steel heart shouted- " Look out ! " before her empty eyes began to glow with flutter magic.

The whole hall was then lit in a glaring light, exposing all three Timberwolfs who pawed at their blinded eyes.

Despite the insane level of light, it didn't seem to effect Indicus.

At the very least, he wasn't blinded by it.

When Indicus noticed the light was not blinding he pressed his attack seeing the three timber wolves in front of him taking the oprotunity he checked his shadow magic and sure enough it still worked well enough despite the amount of light. Indicus smiled and summoned a tendril under each timber wolf to pierce through the wooden chests and destroy the magic cores that kept them alive using the time given by whatever Steelheart did, to concentrate on three at once.

With a sharp crack, their cores shattered and fell to the ground like glass from a broken mirror.

As they slumped to the ground as a pile of dead branches, the bright light began to fade.

Steelheart's eyes began to return to their normal empty state as she looked in the direction of the sounds.

When all the light had faded back to it's normal levels Steelheart asked in a shaky, soft voice-" Is it.. Is it over? "

Tilting her head from side to side to listen better she asked " Is somepony there?.. Who saved me?"

She knew somepony fought off the Timberwolfs, but she could't tell who.

She had used her magic instinctively, and wasn't even fully sure just what she had done.

She had an almost sad look of confusion on her face as she rose to flutter silently in place.

Indicus now done with the timberwolfs went up to Steelheart, "It's Indicus and yes it's over Steelheart, the timberwolves are done for." Indicus was right next to Steelheart at this point. "You helped a lot with whatever spell you used to stun them it would have taken quite a bit longer to defeat the timberwolves without that light blinding them." indicus was unsure of how to further comfort the scared Flutterpony next to him so he just kept close while softly saying "everything will be fine." over and over.

Steelheart's eyes shifted back and forth as if to desperately grasp for a glimpse of what was going on.

As Indicus tried to reassure her, she slowly regained her composure.

" I..Indicus?" she mumbled as she slowly descended back to the ground.

Abruptly, and with no concern for personal space, she pressed her face into Indicus's shoulder.

" I was so scared.. I'm sorry. " She pleaded as if the situation was her fault.

It was at this time mayor Catchpenny had arrived.

looking over the situation, he saw so many distressing things he almost fainted.

The damage to the interior, the piles of broken wood, the fact of Timberwolfs got inside in the first place.

All he could think to say was "What in the Great Sisters is going on?!"

Indicus gently put a hoof on Steelheart's back and let her cry. He looked up when the mayor slightly annoyed that he was interrupted during his comforting of Steelheart, "Timberwolves managed to get in the settlement or were already here and they had to be taken care of, what you see is the result" Indicus kept his voice monotone and professional as he spoke to the mayor keeping any irritation out of his voice. After speaking he turned attention back to comforting Steelheart. He could not say exactly why he wanted to comfort the flutterpony he usually would do his task and move away during the missions he took just before leaving the Lunar Guard letting others take care of the panicked or scared civilians. He guessed that he just saw the innocence in her and felt a need to try and protect it, maybe she reminded him a bit of his deceased marefriend and he wanted to hold on to that connection, or maybe none of those. But what he did know was that he was going to comfort this flutterpony next to him.

(The dawws, damn Steelheart is such a cute character.)

Fire cracker looked around in one last attempt to find some kind of side or basement door, but to no avail.

Even under his red coat you could tell he was blushing.

Trying to redirect the attention from his new workshop he asked- " So.. would you like to check out your new house?"

Meanwhile in the barracks as Indicus gave his report, Steelheart composed herself.

She felt the presence of the Mayor seemed to agitate the mood of the room.

She could feel a strange aura about Indicus.

Something about him was unlike any other pony she had met.

He was strong, stoic even.

But there was some kind of deep pain inside him.

Perhaps it was her flutter magic, or perhaps it was her blind eye taking away the bias of facial expression, but she could sense this.

as he took even one step away, she could feel a cold distance build as he spoke to the mayor.

Trotting up to the mayor, still with a small tear in her eye she stepped between them.

Straightening up her posture she reported- " Steelheart of the flutter tribe reporting sir. damage to the interior was minimal, about 785 bits.

total hazards would range in the tens of thousands. The use of force was both necessary, and carried out professionally."

She was only a Flutter Pony brought in to act as a support role, but she spoke like she was a seasoned soldier.

This change of tone was strange, but any real war horse could tell she was BS-ing to please the mayor.

Impressed, the Mayor again resumed is fake, pony pleasing smile - " Very good then, It seems the princesses were right in assigning you here"

as he walked away, Steelheart plopped on the floor in a slump- " oh queen RoseDust, I hate dealing with that parasprite." she whispered under her breath."

She then turned to Indicus general direction and smiled, asking " Are you alright?. they didn't hurt you did they?"

Once the mayor left he relaxed and let go of the stoic soldier act and turned to Steelheart, "Yea I'm doing quite well, the timber wolves landed a few scratches and maybe a shallow bite or two nothing that time can't fix but I probably should clean and cover them don't know what diseases are out here." Indicus reflected on what the Flutter Pony said to the mayor. "Steelheart when did you learn the whole i'm a professional solider gig? Serve in your military for a bit or something?"

Steelheart paused for a moment, tilting her head in confusion.

it never occured to her that other breeds of pony may not be resistant to the native germs.

She smiled at the softer tone Indicus had taken.

and when he asked if she had served in the military, she closed her eyes and simply smiled serenely.

After a strangely still moment of silence, she opened her eyes shook her head slowly and in a soft almost motherly voice she replied-

" I am but a simple flutter pony in the service to Queen Rosedust."

She took a step closer, the sound of her hoof hitting the stone floor sending an echo in eerily the silent hall.

Suddenly her nose twinged as she smelled the sent of blood coming from a small drop that glided from a small cut on Indicus's flank.

As her eyes shifted back and forth in distress, the acoustics and mood of the hall returned to normal.

Her voice became distressed and sounded like she was going to cry- " Oh no, you are hurt."

The cut was something even a normal civilian pony wouldn't notice, but Steelheart treated like a major wound.

Holding pressure on an area slightly off to the actual cut sight, she insisted " We need to get you to the doctor."

Indicus looked at the small cut on his flank that Steelheart was worried over. "Steelheart the wound is but a small cut and I know enough restoration magic to heal them. Though I must thank you for the concern." With a simple healing spell Indicus healed the small cuts on himself hoping to put Stealheart's mind at ease. "There the cuts are gone, and i'm still here." Indicus continued his soft tone and smiled admiring the flutterpony's concern for even a minor injury.

With the smell of blood gone, Steelheart breathed a sigh of relief.

It was then she noticed her hoofs were pressing down on his flank.

She recalled that Pony from the developed world had personal space issues, so she blushed and quickly withdrew.

"Sorry" she remarked with a soft blush to her face.

" I'm glad your alright. . I could never do what you did."

She looked over in the general direction of the timber wolf heaps adding " I would be too scared. "

She again began to float in the air, the beat of her flutter wings making no sound.

It was clear at this point she did this as a nerves habit.

Looking back, she asked - "Could I .. Could I stay with you? "

Blushing again, she reworded her question " I mean for the rest of the day! .. It would help me feel more safe."

As she descended back down, she added- " And if we run into the mayor again, it might be good to have some one who can actually see the parasprite coming,"

She laughed to herself at her own joke.
