He has a mid-transformation form as well, but he still appears to be Sonic, other than the dark blue aura coming off his body.

The multitude of fake Chaos Emeralds and Sonic's intense anger allowed him to achieve this transformation.

Not long story short, don't make Sonic angry when he's around fake Chaos Emeralds.
