Fantasy Moments in Time

When James let go of the gun, Minnie released his wrist, knowing she left a red hand mark. Then she watched the tall guy rummage around, pondering an argument in her mind.

She could go back to sleep, imagine that she didn't let the idiot leave on his own without protection. The group will have a gun and they can shoot whatever comes their way...

But James is right in a way: People will start to hurt each other if no one brings food...That's not a good thing...

But they don't know what's out there exactly. All the group knows is that people don't return after leaving, thinking, fearing it's either dinosaurs eating them alive or worse...the terrorists that caused this whole mess in the place. They could be hunting them down too...

But still...living in fear is not living. It's surviving. Anticipating if they get to be alive the next day with another person possibly dying from hunger, thirst, or murder-

The tiny author sighed quietly, carefully untangling Mike's hold on the gun before swinging the sling over her shoulder, and standing up. She folded her blanket and tucked it in her small pack before carrying it on her back. Then she carefully tip-toed her way to the older teen and sat down next to him.

"...Fine...but I'm coming with you." Minnie didn't want a repeat of what happened to her friend.

James looked at her in surprise, then his eyes glanced at the strap and the rifle on her back. " . . . Why do you have the gun? Don't you care about them, or something?" he wondered if this girl was a hypocrite or one of those people who think they're in charge where it's not okay for others to do things, but it's okay if they do it even though it was going against what they originally said.

Minnie looked at him with narrowed eyes. "I have a license to use a gun...I can watch your back and shoot a target from afar..." Then she sighed, rubbing her forehead. "...but I did say to leave it, didn't I?....I'll just have to find another one while getting food...hopefully."

The tiny teen took off the sling and stood up, ready to put the gun back in Mike's arms.

James watched her go. It's suicide, he thought, not stopping her, and going out into the jungle with, well, nothing. After she had given the gun back to Mike, he got ready to rope down. "Minnie, listen, it's dangerous out there, okay? You still want to come? Maybe it's better if you stay."

Katsuya Katsuya

"We are persecuted by the government to die just to ensure the terrorists' deaths too..." Minnie countered, emotionless as she sat back down. "We're in a life or death situation the moment they closed those gates and shot anybody who comes close to leaving the island. It's just a matter of time and the way we die that's different."

"Don't tell me to stay here and fool me into believing that this place will keep me alive. If it's like you said and people will start killing each other for food, then I rather do my best to getting food then be someone else's dinner. Now can we please go?" It's what she learned during this whole month of being stuck in an island and slowly losing people to something and she begrudgingly accepted it.

Zer0 Zer0

- James Pendragon -
" Rest House, Lysaur Valley "

"Alright. I'll admit though, it's nice not have to have to go at this alone." said James, roping down. There was a bit of climbing they had to do, as the rope blanket didn't reach all the way down from the third floor to the ground, but they made it alright. Minnie's companion didn't seem the outdoorsy type what with his many slips and slow going, but he didn't lack for determination.

They had no light, but at least it was a cloudless night, allowing them to see the black silhouette of the trees and the pavement of the road. The rest house was right beside the main highway where jeeps and tourists vans drove through. They were on the west side heading for the west gate that had been locked shut a month ago. They had no power, so perhaps the electric fence was down and could allow them to climb over it. This was also the place those who had disappeared had gone through, so they had to be vigilant. They didn't walk along the road, too open, but kept to the shrubbery, listening to any noise.

Finally they came upon the gate fence where there was a straggle of vehicles that had been abandoned. The two would recognize a few as coming from the rest house a month ago. Now they were slightly rusty, dusty, and a few plants had crept over them.

"Maybe there's some supplies here." said James. "Should we risk a light?" They were close to the gate that was closed as usual. No lights were on and only blackness stared at them from the windows that lined the side of the gate. The side of the gates were two towers where outpost guards once stood. The two doors were closed, and from this distance there wasn't much to make out. They could creep closer to investigate it.

Katsuya Katsuya

Minnie nodded and climbed down after him. It took her a minute to jump off the rope when they reached the dead end of the blanket rope, but she did it. The fall wasn't so bad, thankfully. James' companion didn't seem agitated whenever he slowed down nor did she say anything about slipping; she just seemed...worried? Perhaps she's worried about being caught by something?

Once they reached close to the gates and heard James' question, Minnie pondered for a moment. "We might be seen if we risk a light. Targeted even if we're not careful." It's too risky in her opinion. "I say we use the light when we really need it like to blind any attackers..."

Zer0 Zer0

- James Pendragon -
" Rest House, Lysaur Valley "

"It's hard to scavenge without a light." said James. "I'm desperate for a weapon. There might be one in the guard towers or around here and I don't want to miss it. I'm going to check the towers, if nothing's there, then I think it's safe to make a fire."

There were a couple of things they could do around here: search the abandoned vehicles for anything useful, search around and inside the guard towers, or start making something from the scattered junk around here like a simple club or a spear.

- Tutorials -

- Scavenge -
" Cost: 1 AP "

Roll 2d6 to find out what random item you found (The GM will tell you what item you got, or you can check out what you got in the Jurassic CS over at the OOC thread). You can scavenge as many times a day equal to 4+ your Vigilance Skill Rank. 1 Scavenge is 1 hour spent digging around trash, going on supply runs, using make-shift tools that don't last forever to break open locked storage, or using up ammunition to hunt for food.

- Scavenging -

Scavenging with Others
Don't have AP, but you got the Vigilance Skill? Someone with AP can go with you and you can search.

Scavenging at Night
Run boy, run! Zombies are faster and have heightened senses at night, making going outside very dangerous. Every time you scavenge at night, roll a successful stealth check first to begin scavenging. Failure means getting into a battle.

*Stealth check will not work if you are carrying a light or are noisy. You are automatically spotted.
*No Light = Instead of rolling 2d6 when scavenging, roll 3d6. If your third roll = 3 or less, you find no item. Because you can't see, scavenging without a light has a chance to fail. What one can do to have a light is scout an area for foes. And if there are foes, have an ally engage as many of them as he is capable and then draw them away from the area so you are free to search with ease.

Free Scavenge
No need to spend 1 AP, and has nothing to do with your Vigilance Skill Rank.Free Scavenge is a search that only requires a moment. Some conditions, such as defeating an enemy, provides one or more free scavenge opportunities that gives you all his items that you can grab quickly.

Search Harder
Requires tools. Players may scavenge more times than their Vigilance Skill Rank a day. They do this by venturing to more dangerous places, really turning a place upside down, or by exerting a lot of effort. For exerting effort, simply reduce condition by 1 for every extra search. For venturing to more dangerous places or turning a place upside down, this puts them at risk, which has a chance to initiate battle with a random foe. The GM will roll 1d6 to decide.
1. Small Horde
2. Medium Horde
3. Small Hostile Force
4. Medium Hostile Force
5. Safe
6. Safe

- Hunting -

1. Hunt as many times a day equal to 1+ your Vigilance Rank (stacks with scavenging). Roll 1d6 to find out what prey you found. 1 hunt takes 1 hour.
(1-2) Fast Prey. Rabbits, birds, rats.
Requires 2 rolls: Stealth roll --> Ranged Attack. Gives 3 food, 1 fauna chunk. If fail, prey escapes.
(3-4) Challenging Prey. Wild boar, deer, horse.
Requires 4 rolls: 2 Stealth rolls --> 2 Ranged Attack. Gives 7 food, 3 fauna chunks. If fail, prey escapes, and make 1 roll for mishap.
(5-6) Dangerous Prey. Bear, wolves, moose.
Requires 4 successful attack rolls, can try again. Roll for mishap for each attack roll. Gives 15 food, and 7 fauna parts. See the mishap list below for this prey:
1 = fracture, +6 bleeding, -4 condition. For fracture roll 2d4. First result is the body part that got fractured (1 = main arm, 2= arm , 3 = one leg, 4= back), second result is how many months you cannot use that limb, making some items and skills unusable.
2 = +5 bleeding, -3 condition
3 = +4 bleeding, -2 condition
4 = +4 bleeding
5 = +2 bleeding
6 = Safe
- Crafting -

Crafting is done by performing one of the three AP actions:
Craft +1 . Cost: 1 AP
Craft +3 . Cost 2 AP
Craft +5. Cost 3 AP

The +1, +3, and +5 are Crafting Points (CP), which you use to complete an item. Items require a certain number of crafting points to finish. Some items such as the shiv require only 1 Crafting Point or 1 CP, others such as a stone wall require 40 CP and may take days to finish.

If you do not have AP or do not wish to spend it, you can gather the required materials instead to make it.

Wood & Stone:
Most materials require these two. Instead of searching randomly, you can spend 1 AP and 1 hour gathering 3 of whichever combination you choose. Ex. 3 wood, or 2 stone & 1 wood.

Maximum of 3 during day time and 1 at night if you don't have a light source. Light source allows you to gather the usual 3. Some items like the pickaxe allows you to gather more.

When in a forest, you automatically get +2 wood every hour you spend traveling/scavenging/scouting for other things there. If you randomly happen to get wood during the scavenge dice roll, you get 4 wood instead.

Crafting Blue Prints Instructions:
1. The higher your Operate skill rank, the more recipes will be available to you. Rank 0 recipes can be done by anybody, as they do not require any ranks in the Operate skill.
2. If an object has a material requirement in bold. It means that material requirement isn't used up in the building or crafting of that object, and can be used in the crafting of other things. Ex.

Spear = 1 wood + knife
*What you get afterwards is the spear and you get to keep the knife. Wood is gone. Some items can be disassembled into their raw ingredients. The spear, for example, can be turned into wood and used to make a campfire when you really need it.

3. Replacements. Certain items can be used to replace other materials.
Coal = can replace wood unless it's for carpentry.
Bowdrill = can replace firestarter and will not be used up.

" Crafting Blue Prints "

Operate 0
*Ranks in the Operate Skill allow you to craft better items. The blue prints below, however, are things anyone can craft and do not require any ranks in the Operate Skill.

BLADE:
1. Shiv = 1 CP |or| 1 stone |or| 1 fauna chunk |or| 1 Junk
Knife. Made of sharpened bone, stone, or jagged metal. Used for skinning animals and can be used up to pick one lock open without spending AP. When used to lockpick, make a successful steal roll to open the lock. A shiv is a very weak dagger. Broken easily after 3 hits.
Upgrades:
x1 poison dagger charge = 1 chemical |or| 1 poison. Poison berry mix or excretions from venomous animals.
2. Spear = 2 CP |or| 1 wood + knife
The tip can be set aflame by using up 1 fire starter, or for free at the campfire for extra damage and light.
Upgrades:
x1 fire spear charge = 1 gasoline + binding |or| 1 cheer food + binding. Burns enemies. Max 6 charges.
x1 poison spear charge = 1 chemical |or| 1 poison. Poison berry mix or excretions from venomous animals.

2. Hammer = 3 CP |or| 1 wood + 1 stone
Adds +2 pts. when crafting structures.

3. Crude Shovel = 3 CP |or| 1 wood + 1 stone.
Adds +2 pts. when crafting hiding spots, traps, holes, anything that needs digging. All shovels give +1 free scavenge per scavenge when looting structures.

ARMOR:
*Armor doesn't reduce damage, instead it is your damage threshold. The higher the better. Any damage that exceeds your armor threshold worsens your character's condition.

1. Pajamas = 1 CP |or| 1 bindings + 1 flora + sewing kit
1 Armor. Cloth Armor. They don't protect you from zombies, but they do keep you cozy and warm at night. Made of heavy, coarse cloth, stuffed with straw and typically reinforced with ductaped or sewed in magazines for extra padding.

MISCELLANEOUS:
1. Bow Drill = 2 wood + bindings + knife
A Fire Starter that can be used again and again unlike matches. Useful for making fire if you don't have matches or lighters. Takes at least half an hour to make the fire.
2. Sewing Kit = 1 fauna chunk + 1 bindings + knife |or| 1 flora + 1 bindings + knife
For making and repairing clothes, leather armor, and creating a trauma kit.
3. x1 Rope = 2 CP |or| 12 bindings + 1/2 hour
Consumable. Create 50 ft. of rope. Can be used up to give +2 climbing. Ropes are sturdier than bindings. Can be unwound quickly to give 6 bindings.

4. Bandages = 2 bindings
Consumable. -1 bleeding. Make a successful Fortitude Skill roll to prevent bacterial infection. Non-sterile bandages.

5. Rain Catcher = 1 junk + 1 wood |or| 1 junk + 1 stone |or| 2 junk
All you need is plastic. Includes a water distiller which you can purfiy water with. Can be carried in the backpack. When it rains and this has been assembled on the ground, morale will not go down for lack of food for that day.

6. Molotov = 1 binding + 1 gasoline + 1 junk |or| 1 binding + 1 gasoline + glass |or| 1 binding + 1 cheer food
??
7. Twig Basket = ??
Handwoven. Can make it to replace backpack.

STRUCTURES:
*Allies can spend AP for you.

1. Campfire = 1 CP |or| 1 wood + 1 fire starter |or| 1 wood + 1 hour
Keeps you warm and you can roast things, or smoke them to preserve them. Also keeps rats away. Rats eat your food. Can cook:
a. Food = 3 fauna chunks + 1/2 hour |or| 3 flora + 1/2 hour. Mmm, rat burger and beans! Heals 1 Hp.
b. +2 Food = 1 food + 1 junk + 2 hours. Salted, smoked, or dried food preserved in make-shift containers.
c. + 2 Condition until healthy = 1 food + 1 fauna chunk + 1/2 hour |or| 1 food + 1 flora + 1/2 hour.
d. + 3 Condition until healthy = 1 food + 1 food + 1/2 hour.

Can craft:
a. Bandages, Sterile = 2 bindings + 1 food + 1 junk |or| bandage + 1 food + 1 junk. -3 bleeding. Cloth boiled in hot water to make clean bandages inside a clean container. No rolling for bacterial infection.
b. x1 Poison = 1 chemical |or| 1 herb |or| 3 flora |or| 3 fauna chunks
Applied on weapons or ingested. The more poison used, the sooner the death. Slows enemies (- accuracy??)

*Once you successfully make a camp or cooking fire, you don't need to use a firestarter or fireplow again to restart the fire, except when the fire gets put out by water or heavy snow.

2. Hiding Spot = 1 CP |or| ?? + shovel
Combined with "Anywhere Stash". And if built in safehouse, maximum of four for each area, and can hold ten items each. Very important during PvP events. This is where you can hide your vehicle and items when you are in a PvP area, because people will rob you of everything you've got if you leave it out in the open. It can be rage-quit infuriating. Though some players will wisen up and booby-trap them, so beware of precious items in the open too.

You can spend as many crafting points as you want to make it DC9 fool-proof (roleplay-wise you are adding locks, more secure storages when you are doing this). And also add in a bomb. Quick note, if that bomb is set off, all your items inside are destroyed.

3. Garden = 15 CP
Requires rain catcher. Allows you to have +10 people in your colony, starts one month after garden is completely built. Even without food in their inventory, a character who wakes up or returns to a safehouse with a thriving vegetable plot will not starve. 1 per area.

4. The Brig = + 60 CP
Turns your captured prisoners into allies. Requires a safehouse. A place that holds rowdy colony members, prisoners, and where your allies convince them to join your side. Stronger or more useful NPCs take a longer time to convince compared to, say, a lowly scavenger.

5. 1 Fortification = 1 CP |or| 1 wood |or| 1 stone
Gives +4 defense. 1 defense kills 1 zombie before it is destroyed. Can be made outside of the safehouse, like when you're camping outside. Once you've reached the 'Hardened' character rank, the activity in your larger colony will begin attracting zombies every night = 1 zombie/2 people. They won't break through unless they number more than your defense, at which point they are automatically killed by your fortifications until the zombie numbers are even with your defense number. The number of zombies will not increase every night unless you bring in more people. They won't decrease either even if you move away the people. Starts as a mud hut outside.

Operate I
*Requires at least 1 Rank in the Operate Skill. Not yet available.

Arrows can be used to shoot rope across a distance. Max 30 arrows without quiver.
Upgrades:
x1 fire arrow charge = 1 gasoline + binding |or| 1 cheer food + binding. Burns enemies.
x1 poison arrow charge = 1 chemical |or| 1 poison. Poison berry mix or excretions from venomous animals.

Minnie pondered again before nodding.

"Alright, but I'm coming with you. It would be a bad idea to split up." She really didn't want to risk anybody popping out of nowhere while they are looking for something. "Sorry about being this wary when we just started to scavenge for stuff." Maybe she can find a gun around here after making a fire?

"No, it's alright. I'm wary too." chuckled James. "So, ladies first?" he gestured at the guard towers. "Just joking, I'll go first."

Acquired Forest Region Bonus: When in a jungle, you gain +2 wood for every hour you spend in there.

+2 wood to James and Minnie from traveling from the rest house to the gate.

James crept along, moving quietly from car to car until they reached the closed doors of one of the towers. He was tempted to toss a rock at the electric fence to see if it was on, but the sizzle might be loud enough to attract attention.

There were no bodies in the area, but there was dried blood and damages to the vehicles that looked like the metal got ripped and slashed by something with large claws. There were scattered belongings, and he accidentally nudged something heavy that made a grazing metallic sound. "Oho." he said after he stooped down and felt around the floor.

"Look, Minnie, some kind of make-shift pick-axe." he whispered. It was crudely made from wood, jagged metal, and duct tape, but it was sturdy enough to chop wood.

The two could see slash marks on the door, likely made by the same large claws as the ones made on the vehicles. It was dented as though something large had tried to ram in. A little push, and the metal creaked open, wide enough for Minnie to slip in, but not for James as he was tall and there seemed to be a barricade behind the door that made the opening too short for him. Minnie can remove the barricade, but it was so well made she would have to be very careful not to make any noise.

Whatever the two decide, they could see that it was dark inside, and . . . was that heavy breathing up on the second floor?

Katsuya Katsuya (OOC: Please roll for Vigilance. James cannot pass through the door unless Minnie and he either push it open making noise, or Minnie attempts to stealthily take down the barricade. If she picks stealthily taking down the barricade, please roll for stealth)

It might have been a trick due to how dark it is, but he might have seen the corners of her lips quirk up in a small smile. She followed behind him, looking around and behind them as they made their way.

The bodies and claw marks made the tiny teen's heart beating faster in fear. Whatever made those marks might still be here and she didn't want to know what made them nor meet it. She blinked in surprise when James showed her a handmade pick-axe, walking closer to see how sharp it is until she leaned back again, nodding in approval. "We can chop wood with this." For fire. That would wonderful to have.

When they reached the door, Minnie narrowed her eyes cautiously. She didn't trust it already. There were dents and claw marks with...is that dried blood?! Then she looked up where the second floor windows are as she can hear...heavy breathing. Inside was really dark too, so without a light source they couldn't see what's inside. With a light source they would alarm whoever or whatever is inside...

Before she backs out, the tiny teen quietly sighed and whispered to James that she will go inside to take the barricade away so he can come in too. Minnie passed the much taller teen her bag so he can hold onto it as she carefully squeezed through the opening. Once she was inside (again feeling that spike of fear piercing her heart), Minnie concentrated on dismantling the barricade. Her tiny hands quietly took all the items down, one by one, as gently possibly. Like she was afraid of waking a sleeping baby if she made a loud sound.

With the last remaining blocking rock was moved away and making a bigger space for James to go through, Minnie waved a hand at him. Letting him know to come in but to be careful on not alarming whatever is upstairs.

- James Pendragon -
" West Gate, Lysaur Valley "

"Thanks." James slipped in. All was dark inside and it smelled of rotten flesh the closer they came up to the second floor. The two knew from the tours that the controls for the gates were in the guard tower, and that power lines ran underground. They could check if the power was on, and if it was, they could open the gate and get out of Lysaur Valley on a vehicle. Though a month had passed, he was sure at least one of those abandoned vehicles was still working.

He hesitated on the stairs. It felt like he was approaching something dangerous, it reeked so bad now. "But it can't be dinosaurs up here, right?" he whispered to Minnie. "The door wasn't broken down so whatever tried to get in, failed."

He stepped on something sticky, and cobwebs tangled in his hair. James, waved it off, but there seemed to be no end to the web in the darkness; suddenly, a large, hairy something with many long legs crawled underneath the moonlight streaming from the hallway window. An acromantula.

It was a giant spider, as big as a horse carriage, kept in the giant terrarium where tourists could watch them in safety behind reinforced glass. It must have escaped. It had a terrible blackened wound across its head, as though it had been terribly burned. A single milky white eye glimmered under the moonlight. It was either blind, or partially so. In any case James had frozen in place the moment he saw it.

It didn't pounce. Rather, it crept along carefully, feeling along the webs with its two little front pedipalps on either side of its massive pincer. It was so large that it covered the width of the hallway. They could attack it, or they could carefully, without stepping on the webs, slip into an adjacent door and close it, or they could immediately run out of here.

Minnie froze the sight of the acromantula, holding her breath. That's a big spider...a very creepy spider too.

The tiny teen wanted to cringe when she saw a milky eye glimmer under the moonlight. It's still very creepy, blind or not. She didn't know what to do. There were spider webs everywhere and she didn't have a gun. James...James?

What is he doing?!

Minnie tensed up as she watched the taller teen's actions, hoping that he knew what he was doing.

" Rest House, Lysaur Valley "

James didn't know what he was doing either. He knew they were trapped. If they moved, that would tell the giant spider where they were and a bite from it was venomous, so he did what he logically thought was the best option.

"H-here, big guy, easy, easy." He had some food from the loose floorboard in the rest house, a can of smoked spam, something he'd been saving. He pulled the metal lid open and slowly offered it to the approaching spider.

Hairy pedipalps touched his arms as those giant pincer-like fangs flexed open --- they were as long as his arm. James dropped the spam with a clang on the floor and the spider busied itself with eating. It didn't bite him. It didn't bite him! Bearing the horrid rotting stench around it, he opened his bag and spilled out all of his food: a can of sour cream Pringles, a bowl of instant chinese noodles, and a couple of chocolate bars.

Then he backed away. "Minnie, come on." he whispered, hugging the wall as he side-stepped around the giant spider.

Very carefully, and not caring that he was covering himself head to foot in sticky webs, he made his way around it. When the two came upon the room it had crawled out from, many bones and shiny things glimmered under the moonlight. Clothes of people they had known from the rest house about a month ago, bones of raptors, and the corpses of soldiers.

Acquired James has acquired a giant pet spider.

"Now we know why they never came back." said James. He looked back at the spider that was still eating, and dared to go in its den to grab as many items as he could, before moving to the third floor.

After they had locked the door and barricaded it, the two finally have a safe place to rest. This was the control room, and sure enough the controls for the gate was here, but there was no power. It seemed the electric fence was down as well.

From searching around they learned from the written maintenance logs that there was an emergency electrical generator down at the basement, but after reading further they learned that it had been flooded two weeks after the terrorist attack. Luckily there was a drainage system that they could manually operate. Two hours away on foot beyond this gate was a sewage gate that had been closed to prevent the waste from going into the river. They could manually open that and the basement water will drain away, allowing them to start up the generator and open the gate. They could have a vehicle as they make their way through the island. It'll help them carry more things and it would be a comfortable place to rest --- or they could forget about the vehicle, I mean, they still hadn't met the things that slashed those cars, so who knows what's out there? They could just climb over the fence and make their way to the nearest rest house, but they'd have to leave a lot of stuff behind.

They could go back and tell the others in the rest house about this too. It's safer in numbers, right? Though they'd probably have to kill the giant spider. It wasn't a dog, maybe James was safe from it, but what about the others?

Minnie watched on with wide eyes, looking more like her age then she previously had shown in the past month. She nodded when James insisted on following him, hugging the wall as she walked around the huge spider. She held her breath again when she smelled that pungent waft of horrid rotting flesh, feeling sick for a moment.

When they reached the room the spider came from, the tiny teen flinched at all the bones of both human and raptors that laid around with items and clothes-! She recognized that pink top and those golden ring bracelets that always jingled whenever her friend moved around. That must have been how she...she...

Not wanting to think about it anymore while they were still in danger, Minnie helped carry some of the items. The only thing she took is a single golden bracelet from her deceased friend's bony wrist and wore it. Then she moved to the third floor with James. The fringes of her hair overshadowed her eyes as they locked the door, barricading it in case the spider was planning to make them as it's lunch too.

The tiny author looked down, sitting on the floor as she went through the items James took from the spider's den. Then she passed him the anti-vemon. "H-here...you might need thi-this..." Was that...a sniff? Her voice, normally emotionless and dull, had a hint of emotion in there.

"...G-gonna pile the items in order...D-do you want to put the li-light on now?" Minnie asked, still not looking at him or at the door behind them as she started to feel what item she had in a pile now; she had a soldier's shirt. Her shoulders were trembling.

"Thanks." said James, accepting the anti-venom. Holding a flashlight in one hand, he checked his arm for any scratches. There were none. He gave out a sigh of relief.

"Minnie, you alright?" said James, when he heard the trembling in her voice, but didn't flash the light on her face. He could see that she was trembling.

"..." Minnie sniffed. "You remember Evangeline?...She left about two weeks ago a-an-and..." Her voice wavered, an arm went up to her face and made a wiping motion. "Her clothes are in the spider's den, James..."

She looked up. The moonlight from the window revealed her wet teal blue eyes. Grief and regret swam in her eyes , hot tears flowed down her red round cheeks as she sniffed again. Her frowning lips were quivering. "...no-not okay...I-I'm no-....."Minnie looked down again as she wiped her seemingly endless tears.

"I kn-knew she's d-dead...but t-to s-se-see it..."The little author quietly mumbled through her soft sobs. "..."

" . . ." James sat beside her and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. For a few minutes he just stayed like that in silence. "I'll get a fire going."

With a scratch from a match, the small pile of wood he had collected during their hike from the rest house to here kindled to life. It was warm now.

James resumed sitting beside her. " . . . " his hand was back on her shoulder again. He thought of killing that spider tomorrow and then retrieving Evangeline's body. They could bury it or cremate it, give her a proper send off and a prayer.

Minnie didn't move from her spot as James made the fire, quietly crying at her friend's death. It's one thing to think it's happened; it's another to actually see it with your very eyes. Proof that Evangeline is gone. Really really gone...

She shouldn't have left her friend go alone...

Feeling a hand on her shoulder once more, she looked up, red in her watery eyes. The little author hiccuped, a hand reached up to lightly pat the hand on her shoulder. Once again that night, she sighed but it's to calm her sobbing, her lungs jerked harshly with the sharp breathing in motions. "S-sorry...I-I'll t-try to c-calm down so-soon..."T-tha-thanks fo-for making the fi-fire."

" You're welcome. And it's okay, it's nothing to apologize about, Minnie." said James, patting her back. "If you want to cry, just cry." he nodded.

He took the first watch that night, just sitting beside her. Indeed he didn't know how to use a gun, so he familiarized himself with the pistol as he whiled the hours away. Bullets were precious. He wished they had more so that he could practice.

Rested Slept for more than four hours.

Minnie and James' AP's have been restored to full.

The next day, James was fast asleep curled up against the wall on top of a pile of the soldier's uniforms. It was early in the morning, and the sun had not risen yet from the sea of trees. Outside their door all was quiet, save for the few rustlings of bone and debris as the giant spider moved about every now and then.

The fire had smoldered into embers, the heat just enough to cook something without burning it. Their loot lay in a neat pile on the floor, including the soldiers' notes and a diary they had scavenged.

Katsuya Katsuya

Minnie nodded and continued to cry until she tired herself out. Tired, her head bobbed and lightly leaned on the wall and James' side as she couldn't hold her eyes open anymore.

Throughout the night, she didn't make a sound. When it was her turn to watch the night, woken up by James, Minnie looked a bit better.

She didn't move from her spot as James curled up for the night. When he woke up, the taller teen will see Minnie cooking enough fauna meat over the burning glowing wooden chips. The rifle laid beside her, ready to use in case anything happened.

"...Morning James..."

"Morning, Minnie." said James blearily, rubbing the gunk out of his eyes. He sleepily blinked at the food cooking over the glowing coals. "That's not barbecued spider nor raptor bone stew, is it?"

Katsuya Katsuya

"No, it's beef jerky..." Minnie said, staring at the meal that's cooking. "I made it with the beef jerky I had saved up before..." Then she peeked over her shoulder to raise an eyebrow.

"...Do you want some raptor bone stew or barbecued spider? I could just-?"

" Oh, thank goodness --- and no, yech, no, that would be disgusting, Minnie." said James, putting up a hand. Then he became curious, "You could just . . . what exactly?"

He asked her if he could have some, and if she said yes he'd eat ravenously, spearing a jerky with a piece of twig. All these goods stuff and not a single food from the spider den. He's going to have to hunt or forage for food today. Forage more likely or set some traps.

After nodding a 'Yes', Minnie watched stoically as James speared an innocent jerky with a piece of twig. "I would just go to the spider and shoot it so we can eat barbecued spider or raptor bone stew." They can't exactly get picky right now. She pondered as she methodically chewed her jerky piece.

"...Then again...I don't know if eating the spider would make us sick and the raptor bones might not be editable..." She sighed almost sadly, once again pondering what they should do. Maybe she should scavenge around now since it's the morning or make traps. The tiny gunner couldn't waste her bullets either so she had to be careful with making stuff...

"..." She should have payed attention to her boyfriend when he was showing her his traps for his older brother. Those traps would be so useful here.
