Fantasy Moments in Time

-The First KO-
Lydia stopped moving and sat there under the blanket watching James, still with the almost begging expression marking her green eyes. The blanket tightened slightly around her peeping hole as James hesitated, her hands closing the opening slightly, "Jaaaaames!!" She squeaked in embarrassment and completely closed the hole in the blankets, once more becoming Lydia-ghost.

She fought with him slightly to keep the blanket on her head, not wanting him to see her like this, but then the thought occurred to her that they were in a courtship and if this was the worst he was ever going to see her, it would make any other way he saw her during their life together seem a whole lot better by comparison. So with a resigned sigh, she finally relented and let him take the blanket away, though her surrender wasn't joyful and she covered her face with her hands, squinting her eyes shut beneath them, "C-can you... help me fix it?" her voice was muffled as she spoke into the palms of her hands.

"Yes." said James immediately, relieved she didn't get mad at his answer. That begging expression had made him want to lie and said she looked absolutely spiffingly perfect, and he felt regretful, wondering if he made her feel ugly by his words.

"Patchy bald, I still like you, okay?" he said, rubbing her hand, and bent down to try and peek at her shut eyes, smiling. "You're the prettiest patchy bald girl I've ever seen." he kissed her bald spots gently. He asked Renee for the hair growing cream. "How does this work?" he added to his sister.

"I couldn't attack because she reminded me of my little sister." Chenglei answered quietly as he watched Kenren get treated by the healers. He stood by the door, knowing that Renee, who came over to see what was going on, is listening in. She had her hand over her mouth, shiny eyes wide as tears fell down. Then he can see her brows furrowed down and Chenglei blocked her way in the room, restraining her from entering.

"Ren Ren-! No! Don't-!"

"He's hurting because he knows he let you down!" Renee started, looking angry herself. "He's hurting because he knows he did something wrong to the one who he loves the most-!" A large hand clasp down on her mouth and she struggled to be free from Chenglei's bear hug.

"Ren Ren, you know better then to-"

"Shut up Chenglei!" Renee said firmly as she freed herself from his hand. She glared heatedly at him. "If you won't say it, then I will." She transformed to completely be free from Chenglei's grasp and returned to her normal self; she walked in the room, sitting down on a chair nearby Kenren's bedside. She sat up straight with a firm stare at the prince.

"Chenglei and I were captured and held against our wills in a mirror. He got us out somehow and we hid in the barrens as we waited for help from the others. The only reason why we are even alive is because we got Seifer to snap out of it and tell everyone in the palace about the army that was waiting to attack." Renee was angry all right but not towards the prince or Chenglei. It's his choice of words that she's angry. "He couldn't be there to save you because he was in trouble himself. He didn't know where you were nor could he find out until your men came over here with you half dead."

"So stop insinuating that he loves me or my brother like that. He loves you. Even Valdanr knows that. He said it while we were battling against him. Chenglei wanted to see your smile again. That stupid fat lizard tried to manipulate him too by using your image saying 'I hate you!""

"Renee, stop. The prince needs to rest and get better."

"I will not stop. Kenren wants to know, right? Well he will know now." Renee said, not once did she back down. "Yes, I know. Seifer and I are selfish but you know what, Kenren? I had enough with everyone looking at us like we deserve to die when Seifer had nothing to do with this whole thing against the dragon. He was an innocent bystander. You want to be angry at someone; then be angry at me because I was the one who grabbed Chenglei's attention when I was calling out for help. I was the one who didn't hold up our oath on helping each other by putting you and others in danger. I was the one who kept being stubborn about helping others, but don't you dare assume that Chenglei doesn't love you because he sure as he-"

"Renee." A hand clamped down on her shoulder, stopping her tirade. "Please. Enough. Prince Kenren needs to heal." She moved her shoulder violently, looking at Chenglei in disbelief. "Wha- but Chenglei-"

"No. Kenren's right at being angry. Don't say anything more then you already said." Chenglei looked so tired and so lost that he's not standing up striaght, hunching down a few inches like he was carrying the world on his shoulders and it just broke his back. "Please...no more..."

Renee glared again. "But he, of all people, should know to not give up! If he gives up, then the dragon really will win this war." She looked at the Prince. "Don't you dare stop. Don't you dare say that someone else will get the throne. Stop thinking that you lost. Plan. Recover. Recuperate. Then go fight against that dragon. We even have the dragons here to come with us to do battle over the other side of the Storm wall." She insisted. "We have allies who are willing to help. We got what we came for; help to stop Valdanr from hurting others. Kenren, your plan is working, now think of a twist that fat lizard will never expect. Something to take him off guard. We'll set a trap on him instead."

Renee blanked out a bit before shaking her head and explained how the hair cream worked. Then she left the couple alone saying. "I'll come back to cut your hair if you like Lydia. Just tell me when."

Lydia couldn't be mad at his honesty, especially when he had obviously wanted to just make her feel better. She knew that she couldn't have looked all that great if her hair looked as awful as it felt so the fact that he hadn't run for the hills spoke multitudes to her especially when he so quickly agreed to help her.

Nodding her head slightly to him, her fingers splayed near one of her eyes so she could peek out at him, smiling faintly before she covered her face and giggled, "James! Stop," but the words weren't angry, more embarrassed than anything. She wriggled away from his kisses, but finally uncovered her face, looking to Renee as James asked about the hair cream.

" How dare you speak to me that way?" hissed Kenren at Renee. His mouth opened to say some more, but at the broken look on Chenglei's face he didn't say anything and just looked away, annoyed, as the healers helped him.

They politely ushered Renee and Chenglei out, saying that they have to stay away from the prince for now, his head was still recovering from the concussions, and patted the swordsman and Renee's shoulders, before heading back inside the room and closing the door.

ames grinned and showered Lydia in kisses. After listening to Renee's instructions, he asked her when would be a good time for them to apply the cream on Lydia's bald patches as he didn't want to irritate the burns there, then sat down with his girlfriend to talk about when she'd like for him to do it, if she didn't mind him doing it, since they'd probably be in the bathroom together.

When Renee left, and it seemed to be in a hurry, her older brother looked at her back incredulously. "Did she just run away because I was being mushy?" he added to Lydia. "When she's so lovey-dovey with Seifer most of the time?"

"Nope! I just want you two to have some alone time!" Renee yelled back. James could hear that mischievous grin on her face. "I want you to stay lovey-dovey!" Her giggling can be heard in the hallways.

Renee stood up, not daunted at all. "I dare because you wanted to know and now you know." She said, calm compared to before. She let the healers pull her out of the room with a very quiet Chenglei, hearing the door close behind them. Then she looked over at the soldier.

"How are you holding up, Chengl- Chenglei?!" Renee watched the soldier slide down and curl up into a ball and she could only sigh. She patted his shoulder as she sat next to him. "I'm sorry-"

"No...you only said what you wanted to say...I couldn't stop you even if I wanted to." Chenglei whispered as the words Kenren told him before Renee caught his attention echoed in his mind. Tormenting him some more as he knew his care for the kids caused Kenren to lose his arms and eye. He buried his head into his crossed arms and Renee could hear a hitch in his breathing pattern.

Renee nuzzled and patted his back, letting Chenglei have his moment to cry silently as she tries to shut Kenren's harsh words out of her head.

A few days passed, the morning sun was shining on Awashima and it's sleeping residents. A lone and haggard blonde soldier with shadowed purple eyes walked in the quiet grand halls of the palace and stopped in front of a door that he hasn't peeked in for days now. Breakfast was made and placed on a tray that he carried, knowing that the Prince will be waking up soon and will start a tirade for it.

The other soldiers have left, doing something that was necessary and it seems that all of them agreed to have Chenglei watch over the Prince for the day. By watch, they meant for him to go in the room and help Kenren get used to his prosthetic like they have been doing, recommended by all of the healers.

Which terrified the blonde to no end.

But here he is, standing in front of the Prince's bedroom door and Chenglei gulped. After gathering up his broken courage, he walked in and quietly set it down, hoping that he gets to leave the room without waking the Prince up. Maybe Chenglei can care for him without Kenren seeing him? Wishful thinking.

Kenren didn't wake up, but moments later, the clumsy chinking on a plate and the prince's sighs of frustration was heard from beyond the closed door. It seemed to take him a long time to finish eating. Afterwards there was the patter of bare feet, the dragging of a chair, ruffle of parchment, and the scribbling of a quill. Kenren was probably learning how to write again.

Chenglei sighed in relief when he got out of the room in time but then he listened in. After pondering about something, he left his post and returned with a few books that he thought Kenren might like to read. A shogi board was at the top of the pile as he quietly opened the door, not wanting to grab his attention. Then he tip-toed towards the empty bed and placed the books on the bedside cabinet, unfortunately creating some noise from the shogi pieces rattling inside the wooden case.

He held his breathe and froze, his fingers curled up and trembling. Eyes wide before running towards the door-

"Stop coming in here, Chenglei!" snapped Kenren, without looking at him from where he sat in front of a desk. The swordsman could sense another tantrum coming up. It was obvious the prince was still mad at him. Most of the breakfast hadn't been eaten and was left on the bedside table.

He turned around and glared at the stuff he brought, and stood up. "Don't bring me food and --- and whatever." he kicked it, sending the tray and the shogi and books flying, looking annoyed as usual that he couldn't remember words. "You're not my care taker, so don't come back!"

Chenglei froze at the door when Kenren snapped. Then his shoulders slumped as he turned around. He didn't look at Kenren; instead he simply walked over to where the angry Prince toppled over the tray, shogi board, and books on the floor. He picked them up slowly so he doesn't startle him.

"Books and Shogi." Chenglei said slowly and quietly. Then he stood up again to place them back on the bedside table and took the tray and plate with food with him. The floor was clean again. "I'll come back to get more food for you to eat. Hold on."

A few moments later, he came back with another plate and sat down on a chair with the tray on his lap, waiting for Kenren to calm down so he can try eating again.

Kenren didn't speak, just stood there breathing down at him like a winded rhinoceros, and when Chenglei came back with more food, he sulkily said, "Go away." and returned to the desk with his back to him.

He took the quill once more and started writing again, sometimes needing to adjust as the feather would slip from his grip, or he'd accidentally hold it too hard and snap it in two. If Chenglei wouldn't leave he'd throw a glare at him again. "I said go away."

Chenglei didn't leave when Kenren told him so. He stood up, placed the tray on his bedside table, and walked over to where Kenren is practicing his writing. Then he noticed how many quills he broke, so he left to bring some more quills that have a sturdier base for him to grab as tightly as he wanted.

"Here. It should help with the grip." Chengei said slowly. "For now, please Prince Kenren. You need to eat."

Kenren looked at Chenglei, affronted that he'd dare approach him, but the knitted brow was twitching as though he was trying not to be so angry. He just looked away when the swordsman talked about eating again. "I'm not hungry." his stomach growled. The prince stood up from the desk and just went to the bed and drew the blanket over himself completely. "I'm tired. Go away." said the muffled lump that was Kenren.

Kenren could hear Chenglei sighing before quiet footsteps came closer. A clatter from the tray being picked up and the sound of someone sitting down was heard.

"You are hungry. Please eat more." Chenglei slowly pleaded. If Kenren peeked out from his covers, he would see Chenglei completely slumped over on the chair like he wanted to stay as small as possible. The tray on his lap again, ready for the Prince to eat.

"You need to eat." That's when Chenglei tentatively picked up the spoon with food on it, finally looking at Kenren fully in the eye. His own ash purple eyes are dull and there were bags under his eyes. He seem a bit pale too like he was sick or something, but the blonde is functioning somewhat.

The prince didn't answer for a full twenty minutes. Then the blanket was pulled down. He looked at Chenglei's face and sighed. Grudgingly, he sat up and took the spoon from him, though not unkindly, and began to clumsily feed himself, holding it like a shovel.

He didn't speak as he ate. After a while he looked up the swordsman's baggy eyes and his expression softened. He sighed and fidgeted guiltily, going back to eating. Kenren ate everything. "Thanks." he muttered. He didn't look angry anymore, just was avoiding Chenglei's eyes.

"Can we talk?" he said after a while.

Chenglei waited patiently for Kenren, not looking away nor looking at him as he ate in his pace. Once he was done, the blonde soldier nodded and took the tray away to place it on the bedside table. He was about to stand up to leave him in peace when Kenren mentioned about talking and flinched.

He froze for a while before sitting back down and stared at his trembling hands. "Of course. What is it that you wish to talk about?" Chenglei said slowly, gripping his hands together as if to disguise it by moving them, twiddling around.

"She reminded me of Tsumiki and my brotherly instinct kicked in." Chenglei answered, looking back but not really looking at Kenren.

Kenren huffed. "Is that how its going to be from now on?" he said crossing his arms and looking grumpy again. "You'd pick her and just let me . . ." he looked at his arms, "die? Get hurt? I don't know, "his tone became sarcastic. " throw away everything we worked so hard for?" he glared angrily at him. Renee said Chenglei loves him, but he didn't believe it. They broke up six years ago, he probably moved on already. Anguished because he almost let his friend die. "I mean, if not me, then okay, but at least for our country you'd protect what we've been trying to do for our people . . ."

Kenren was looking like he was betrayed again. "Is she who you choose? Those kids? . . . "

Chenglei shook his head. "No." Then he sighed, practically melding into the chair and shrunk a few inches. "I pick you. I always pick you, but I noticed that I was warming up to the kids and got worried. It's why I asked you if it was a good idea for me to look out for them. Then you told me that it was fine...now..." He trailed off, his eyes have gotten duller.

"I regret ever caring for those kids. I regret being friends with Johnny. I regret on missing my little sister and having Renee as a reminder." He leaned over, his hands covering his eyes and leaned on his knees.

"I regret on not being able to save you or attacking them. That memory haunts me over and over again in my nightmares. Over and over and over...with you ending up all bloody and Princess Mia pointing at my face screaming murderer and I just-!" He took a deep and shuttering breathe as to calm down and not stress Kenren again.

"I know my words are nothing more then words but nothing can describe how sorry I really am. "

Kenren didn't answer for a long time, just sat there huffing. Eventually his arms uncrossed and he was just thinking, looking at the wall and glancing at Chenglei every now and then, becoming less and less grumpy. "Okay." he said grudgingly.

"Are you happier with them?" said Kenren, this was now more of wanting to know instead of a criticism. "I mean, do you hate having to choose sides and having to kill friends?" he looked at Chenglei's tired face.

Chenglei flinched despite Kenren being curious. "Why do we even have sides to the ones whom we trust on the research? When we have similar goals? They were even helpful with making sure none of the plants we ate were deadly and helped fix the warship while restocking." He started slowly and quiet. Hands twiddling again.

"It's not the matter of me being happy with them or not. It more of I accept them as part of our army. Of our cause. I see them as comrades in arms since they risked their lives too, coming over here and they're kids-! They are younger than us. All of us. They didn't need to come here. They could have just stayed behind in the warship, but they didn't." His tired eyes looked back at Kenren.

"I wanted to look after them because I understand how it feels like to risking my own life at that age and I never regretted my decision. I can tell they didn't regret their decisions coming here to help you. No matter how many mistakes they made, they always came back up and tried again."

"I mean, do you hate being in a position, where you'd have to kill friends in order to preserve our goal?" clarified Kenren patiently.

Chenglei realized that he might not have had enough sleep to understand his previous question. So he thought it over in his head and solemnly nodded. "I hate being on the position but I will do it if it means to reaching our goal." He sighed again, looking more tired.

"The whole matter with Renee however, it took me off guard with how close I am with the kids...I thought I knew where I was but I guess not..." His tone shifted into one of despair at not recognizing how much he cared.
