Marvel/Daredevil Roleplay

"I know," Sable said, glad the discussion was off of her and Ryder, "what are your plans for tonight then?" She asked, rolling up her pizza to eat it easier.

Maddie shrugged. "Dinner with an old college friend." She replied, doing her best to sound casual. The truth was she had been extremely surprised and shocked to even hear from James, knowing be left college to be a businessman. When he told her he would be in the city awhile and wanted to catch up, she had agreed. The two had dated a few times in college but hadn't become serious. Maddie had her heart set on moving back to hells kitchen, but James didn't seem to care much for new York. She was surprised he was even here.

"Sounds fun." Sable said, "Don't get into too much trouble." She played with a receipt she found on the coffee table asking, "Is it blindie?" She began slowly smoothing and folding the receipt absent mindedly.

Maddie chuckled. "Uh no. Matt and I are just friends. Always have been." She said, finishing off her pizza. Truth was, Maddie had always thought it was too cliché, to be in love with a best friend. And she didn't want to become another girl he had slept with and then moved on. Or dated for awhile and then left. Truth was, Maddie assumed he had slept with few girls since he was Catholic and that's generally frowned upon. Either way his love life was none of her business, and she wanted no part in it.

Sable listened to Maddie's answer. She shrugged in response, "oh okay." She sat non chalantly taking out a ziploc bag of various pills. Opening the bag, her fingers scanned through them as if picking her favorite gummy bear color, "I just thought you liked him. There seemed to be some kind of chemistry there..."

Maddie shook her head. "I don't think so. And even if there was, well. Matt doesn't have the best track record with women." She shrugged. "I figured if he was interested he would have asked me out by now. And he didn't. And then James did. This will be the first date I've been on in a couple years." She looked embarrassed.

"So you are going on a date tonight. Have fun." Sable smiled, drawing her feet up on the couch and sitting criss cross. She spoke, "Maybe the reason Matt hasn't asked you out is because he respects you to much to mess things up... Ya know if it's that bad." She shrugged, "I have never been on a date before."

Maddie shrugged. "Either way he hasn't asked. Dates are kind of fun. Gives you an excuse to dress nice and get out. Speaking of which, I need to shower." She stood and headed to the bathroom, turning on the bathtub.

Sable leaned back in the chair, pulling out a book and smiling as she did. She was happy for Maddie, genuinely. It surprised her how much she started to care.

Maddie showered and dressed in a black dress that came across her shoulders with a wide neck and down to her lower thighs. She had on black pumps and a simple gold-chained diamond drop necklace with matching earrings and a black clutch purse, and her red hair was curled and twisted into an up-do with a couple of the curls down, framing her face. She left the house as silently and quickly as possible, sort of hoping Sable wouldn't notice as she waved and headed out the door. Downstairs, a black SUV was waiting for her. James got out, smiling, and opened the rear passenger door for her. "You look breath-taking." He told her in his matter-of-fact, no-mincing-words way. Maddie smiled, "Thanks. You look pretty sharp yourself." she told him, getting in. He took the seat next to her and the driver started off. "My employer says hello and he hopes we have a lovely evening. Unfortunately, he's very private so he asked me not to share his name. Hope you don't mind." Maddie shook her head in response. "Not at all. He must be pretty high up. He has rights, too." She said, shrugging it off. James smiled at her. "It's so good to see you. You haven't changed a bit." Maddie smiled back. "You have. You're much better dressed now." James chuckled.

Once at the restaurant, James ordered a special wine for them to share. Maddie took one sip and loved it. "Where did you learn about wine?" she asked, in awe. James smiled "I went to Italy with my employer. We had business there. It was a very educational trip for me." he explained, sipping the wine himself. He ordered for Maddie, which she thought was somewhat old-fashioned, but didn't mind since she trusted his taste in wine and food, and she had no idea what to order. James didn't even get a menu. Maddie noticed the entire place was empty. "Where is everyone?" she asked. James made a face "Yeah...my employer insisted on buying out the place for the evening. He wants us to have privacy, and he insists it's also a safety measure." he shook his head. Maddie looked surprised. 'Wow. He must be filthy rich. That must be how James looks so good.' she thought, taking a sip of her wine again.

James changed the subject. "So what have you been doing since we last spoke?" He asked Maddie. Maddie smiled. "Well I graduated with my Bachelors in Nursing, became an RN, and now I'm head nurse down at the ER on 53rd and 9th." she replied. James nodded, "Sounds like you did what you wanted. Is it what you hoped it would be?" "Treating overdosed druggies and beaten housewives? No. But it's good to know I'm doing some good, somehow." Maddie replied with a small smirk. James smiled warmly at her. "You always did want to help people. I'm...to selfish for that." Maddie shook her head. "I don't know, sounds like your employer thinks alot of you...surely you've helped him a few times. I know how loyal you are. He'd be a fool not to protect you." she replied. James met her eyes for a split second, then looked away, feeling a little shy. "I suppose you could say that. So do you have new friends? Neighbors? Surely there's more to tell me." he teased. Maddie smiled. "Friends, yes. Not all of them new. One of them is a childhood friend I recently was reunited with. The others are his friends. I even managed to befriend a client of his." "His?" James zoned in on the pronoun. "Should I be worried? Is he gonna beat me up?" he teased, smiling but slightly concerned that someone else had her attention. Maddie laughed aloud, and James' face showed a warm smile. That was the Maddie he remembered. He had always loved her laugh in college. "No, no nothing like that. He's blind, for one. And two, he's not interested in me like that." she explained. "Oh no. he's got the wounded duck thing going doesn't he? Oh this is terrible!" James faked desperation, putting his head in his hands. Maddie laughed again. "No, believe me! I'm all yours." she joked, batting her eyelashes over-dramatically. James grinned. "Good to know. Just checking." He winked at her, lightening up and enjoying himself. Only Maddie had ever been able to make him come out of his introverted, shy, overly-professional shell. He was so happy to see her.<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_07/525092-0fb41626-f84e-11e4-857f-b08ec264ced5.jpg.c0d16ed6be892140f5aaa8d094c500d6.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="64483" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2015_07/525092-0fb41626-f84e-11e4-857f-b08ec264ced5.jpg.c0d16ed6be892140f5aaa8d094c500d6.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

When Maddie hurried out the door, Sable had her head buried in a book. She simply raised her hand in response to the clicking of the door knob turning. At first the night was calm and quiet. Sable enjoyed the silence. Then the pills started to take affect. Her whole body felt fuzzy, excited, exhilarated, she had to do something. Getting up, Sable looked around the apartment for a printer. Once found she snagged some pieces of printer paper, then the search began for pencils and erasers. Finally finding some, she started taping the sheets together. Once a grid had been created, she began to draw. Each paper had a new image that was in someway related to surrounding images, like a sliding puzzle out of order. She drew photo realistic faces, flowers, buildings, weeds, everything that represented her, the chaos of decay in her own life. Almost an hour had passed without even a cease in her creative out poor. The more she went on, the more abstract the seemingly random images became. Only one thing was able to pull her from her state.

A knock on the door, at first a distant echo, and then a real, tangible sound she could feel pulling her back. Lifting her head she looked at the door first, eyes darting around as if to allow herself to be put back into reality. Slowly she pushed herself up to her feet and shuffled over to the door, pulling at the too big sweater she wore which hung loosely off of one shoulder, her hair pulled into a loose loop at the top of her head, baby hairs sticking out at random angles. Sable looked through the peep hole, seeing it was Ryder, "What the..." her voice trailed off as she stood there, not wanting to move, not sure if she should let him in. Taking a deep breath she opened the door abruptly, standing in the middle of the entrance, staring at him. Her stomach was in knots, her head swimming with not only the high from the pills, but also the mixed emotions which crept up with the sight of Ryder, "What the fuck do you want?" she asked, suddenly deciding on anger.

Ryder lowered his head, his bright blue eyes scanning the floor, nervous to look at her. He put one hand on the back of his neck, rubbing it as he spoke, "Sable..." he paused, his mouth looking tense, "Please... may I come in?" he looked into her light hazel eyes.

Sable stared back, it was like an ocean. A few seconds passed, it seemed like nearly a minute before she was able to pull her eye away. Rolling them, she snapped, "Fine, whatever!" in her high pitched voice, raspy voice, "Hurry up then." Ryder entered, Sable slammed and locked the door behind her. She placed her hands on her hips, standing with her back against the door, "What are you doing here?"

"Sable... no one followed me, I made sure of it."

"And I am supposed to trust you?" Sable scoffed, "Please." she crossed her arms, "After what you did?! You piece of shit." she looked out the peep hole, "Piper knows, he always knows."

"Sable, I have been trying to make it up to you. I said I was sorry... please forgive me." he sounded remorseful as he sat on the couch, "Piper doesn't know, he's not here."

Sable turned around from looking through the peephole and snapped angrily, "He already knew, Ryder!" she began to pace, "He figured out everything! He knew about us. I don't know how, but he found out!" she was getting hysterical, her high quickly turning to one soaked in anxiety, a bad trip.

"No, no. He couldn't have, he would ha-" Sable interrupted him,

"He did! He had you try to kill me and frame me! Why do you think he did that?"

"Because you were talking about leaving. Which you shouldn't have done. That was on you, not me." he pointed a blaming finger at her.

"Why do you think he began to threaten your sister? Huh?" Sable stopped pacing and put her hands on her hips, "Are you that fucking stupid? Really? Piper wants all the mutants to feel safe. He wants them to feel like it's a family, a family they've never had before. He does this so he can brain wash them and obtain their undying loyalty. He doesn't 'force' women to do anything they don't want to, but suddenly he starts threatening your sister? Then shortly after he has you get rid of me? Connect the dots, he knew." Sable snapped. She started pacing again, "And if he finds you here he's gonna go after me. I can't go back, I won't go back to that shit. I'm done. I'm nobody's fucking pawn and I ain't his fucking girl!"

Ryder felt sick, scared. If Piper knew what Ryder and Sable had been doing, why didn't he kill him, was he going to kill him? What was keeping it from it? Was Ryder that much of an asset to him with his mutant abilities? He shook his head, "Stop." he said quietly, "Please... sit down." What had gotten into her? She normally didn't panic like this. He looked down at the coffee table and noticed the plastic bag of pills, "Sable." he said firmly.

She kept pacing, ranting, starting to feel dizzy and frustrated at everything and everyone. She just wanted Ryder to leave and never return.

"Sable!" he snapped getting to his feet and holding up the bag, "What is this?"

Sable stopped suddenly, growing quiet and staring hard at Ryder. She crossed her arms over her chest, looking defiant, "None of your fucking business."

Ryder approached her, "Sable what the hell is wrong with you?! So you're telling me I've been giving you money and you're spending it on this shit?!" he slammed the bag on the ground furiously.

Sable's anger boiled inside her, ready to blow, "You should give me money for the rest of my life you, fucker! And where do you get off on questioning what I do with the money you have been giving to me since you... what was it? Oh yeah! Dropped me from nearly three stories onto a hard floor to be picked up by cops and thrown in jail. I broke three bones!" Sable got in his face.

"And who do you think bailed you out?" Ryder put a hand up pressing it against her upper chest to hold her back firmly, "You're high off your ass right now." he said annoyed.

"Don't avoid the issue. Don't try to weasel your way out of this. You betrayed me! You left me for dead!"

"No, Sable I didn't... I knew you would be okay."

"Yes you did!" tears began to stream down her face. She threw her first at Ryder, punching him in the diaphragm. He stumbled back knocking a lamp off an end table by the couch, holding his gut as he regained his breath, her having knocked the wind out of him, "I trusted you!" at this, objects started rising around her, her hair floating up, body getting a soft glow around it as a shoe flew at Ryder with considerable force, striking him in the face. This dazed Ryder leaving him unable to avoid the dining chair that Sable telekinetically threw at him next. It hit his arms he drew them up in a quick attempt to protect his face, causing him to stumbling backwards against the back of the couch, "You were my friend! I was supposed to be able to trust that you wouldn't hurt me! Trust that you of all people would be there for me! You left me!" she swung at him again, this time Ryder was ready. Now back up on his feet, Ryder reached forward and grabbed Sable's fist with one hand and her arm with the other. He spun her around, pulling her into his embrace, her back against her chest, his arms wrapped around her front, his strong arms holding her close,

"Sable..." he didn't know what to say as she burst into tears, her head hanging, hair covering her face. They sat there on the floor, Sable sobbing as he just held her, stroking her hair with one hand softly. The guilt rose inside him. He felt terrible. He just wanted to help her. The two were now sitting against the back of the couch on the old, faded wood floor. As he sat holding the distraught Sable in his arms, he glanced over at the bag of pills. He sighed as he realized he was the one who pushed her to this. He knew she had a difficult life, a poor upbringing, history of abuse, neglect, and in attempts to be strong and earn her keep from a young age, she did work for Piper that caused her to see what no child should have to see. She wanted to erase those memories, to cover it all up with various, random drugs and self medication. He couldn't help but feel it pushed her over the edge. Sure she had always been a fan of the high, but he thought he had convinced her to cut back, to slow down, obviously not. If anything, he made it worse. He hurt her, betrayed her, gave her ta reason to take that final step from her normal life and placed her in a new, terrifying world without any of her previous relationships there to support her. He knew he owed her the money. Piper took everything she had worked for all those years, it was rightfully hers, "Come on... let's sit on the couch." Ryder stood up, slowly helping Sable to her feet. He gently set her down before running to search for a blanket and pillow. Getting back to Sable, he sat at the end of the couch, placing the pillow on his lap and pulling the small girl towards him. Sable, who was crashing from the high and exhausted from being emotional drained by the situation. She rested her head on the pillow across his legs as he draped the blanket over her. Quickly she began to fall asleep, she was so warm, so at peace. She knew this wouldn't last. It couldn't... it just couldn't. Ryder sat there with Sable, stroking her hair softly. Seeing the remote on the counter, he picked it up and turned on the television, surfing for a channel to watch. He told himself he was going to stay until Sable woke up. He didn't want to leave her or disturb her, but he knew he would have to get back... Piper would get suspicious if he didn't show up to the briefing tomorrow. Slowly running his hand over her face, he stroked her hair, looking at her delicate side profile. He had to leave her. He couldn't stay. In his eyes, Sable had agreed to something he couldn't and started life he would not follow. He would never leave Piper... not while his sister needed him. The lifestyle he was able to live with Piper gave him everything, a home, food, clothes, school supplies, a college savings for his sister, everything Gwen and him needed to survive. Without Piper, they would have nothing. He owed his life to Piper, and no matter what he did, he was either betraying Sable or Piper... truth be told, Sable wasn't the one paying for Gwen's safety and future. However, he didn't think he would feel so much guilt for what he did to Sable. He thought he could just shake it off, tell himself he did it all for Gwen, that it had to happen, that it was Sable's fault for trying to leave in the first place. It only worked partially, there was still that part of him that missed his partner and wanted her back.

Maddie and James finished their dinner but continued to talk for a few hours after they were done. They had dessert and laughed about crazy memories and interesting experiences James had had overseas. Finally it was almost midnight and Maddie yawned. "I should really be getting you home." James said, standing and helping her up. "I'm up past my bedtime, that's for sure. But this was fun." Maddie said, not minding her sleepy self. James smiled back, paying the manager of the restaurant and walking with Maddie to the SUV. He held the door open for her again and the two rode back to Maddie's apartment, chatting. When they finally got to her place, James walked her to her door.

"I'd like to do this again sometime. Maybe I can take you to this Italian place my employer likes." James said. Maddie nodded and smiled. "I'd like that. I had fun, James. It was really good to see you." she said, a genuine smile playing over her lips. James smiled as well. "Everyone calls me by my last name now. It's strange to hear you call me James." "Should I stop?" Maddie asked, concerned. "No, no...it's...nice. Reminds me of who I really am. You know, underneath the better clothes." Maddie laughed with him. "Well, goodnight." she said, about to open the door. "Wait.." James grabbed her hand and leaned in close, barely touching her lips with his. Maddie took a step closer, closing the kiss and putting her arms around his neck. When James stepped back, Maddie was breathless and smiling. "Goodnight." James said, opening the door for her. Maddie smiled and went inside.

When Ryder heard Maddie approaching. He quickly and carefully darted to the bedroom before sneaking out the window and down the fire escape leaving Sable asleep on the pillow, the light from the television illuminating her young, child-like face of false innocence. In front of her were two glasses of water, and two plates, one empty and one with a half a sandwich still on it. As the door clicked open, Sable slowly opened her large, round hazel eyes, blinking them slowly.

"Hey sleepy." Maddie teased, walking to the couch. She glanced curiously at the plates and glasses. "Who did you have over?" She asked flatly, frowning at the dishes as she took them to the kitchen.

"An old friend." Sable replied as she sat up and smoothed out her hair in attempts to push it down. She looked around for her bag of pills and saw it still left on the floor, "He didn't take it?" She whispered to herself as she slowly walked over, picked it up, and placed it back in her pocket.

Maddie frowned. "Ryder, huh?" She asked, washing the dishes absentmindedly. She was still in her dress and makeup with her hair done. After she finished with the dishes she changed into her pajamas and wiped off the makeup. She came back into the living room. "If you wanna go back, I won't stop you." She told sable, though it was clear she didn't like the idea.

Sable sat, arms crossed, staring off to the side of the television, not really watching what was on the screen, "I'm not going back." She said firmly as she lifted her head and leaned back into the couch.

Maddie nodded, looking thoughtful. "Oh. Okay. I'm gonna go to bed. Tomorrow I have a day off....I was thinking maybe we could go shopping." She offered, putting away the dishes.

Sable didn't budge as Maddie stirred around her. She sat still, her legs crossed, arms folded, back planted against the couch. The expression on her face looked emotionally burdened. Maddie's suggestion pulled her out of her daze enough to give a small smile and reply, "Yeah, that sounds good." She nodded, "Real good." She messed with her hair nervously.

Maddie sat on the couch next to her finally. "You gonna tell me what happened with Ryder or just sit there and stew?" She asked, a small smile playing on her lips.

"Nothing... He just blames me for leaving and wants me to go back." Sable said with a shrug, "But there's nothing left for me there. I've been there a long time and... It's not what it used to be..."

Maddie nodded, curling up on the sofa. "I see. And I agree with you. I think there isn't anything left for you there. Especially since you can't trust anyone now. And it's a painful truth but it's one that you've obviously realized. And I'm glad that you have. Now about those pills." Maddie looked at sable. "You know I don't care what you do. But as a healthcare professional, whatever you're taking you can get addicted to easily. And then you're flushing your newly found future down the tubes. All because you're upset. I don't know how your physiology works, with your abilities and all. I'd imagine it's very different from most people's. But I still want you to be careful. Because if you do become an addict I won't hesitate to stick you in rehab. Okay?" She said in a conversational tone. She didn't want to be sables mother. But she didn't want to watch her throw her life away either.

Sable sat forward and took a sip of her water before answering, "Depends what you consider an addiction." She put the glass down, "If you mean unable to function without it, steal money from my mom's purse than no. If you mean self medicating to feel better and enjoy the high... Than yes." She spun the glass slowly, watching the water, "I heal so fast, any damage I do geta fixed right away... I can't die." She said the words like they were a curse.
