Asher shook his head at the miss. He had done very similar things to poor Jordan in the past. Or when he was in a playful mood. “You can pout better than that, lovebug.” Because Asher was equally invested in the show. Carlos grinned something mischievous and feisty towards their observers. Then his face fell. No, it practically disintegrated. At first he stole away all that emotion and then it was replaced by the deepest sadness that he could manage, and that was a lot. This was how he got away with plenty of things in the QZ. He turned back around to face Jordan. “Sad like this?” Even his voice lost all of its pep. He was practiced. It could have been deception. Could have. It might not have been though. It could have just been manipulation.

Jordan flicked his gaze to Asher when he heard him and winked at him. He looked at Carlos when he turned back to look at him. That face.. oh even Jordan couldn’t quite get that sadness in his own expression. He tried though. He mimicked it as best he could. His eyes lost that sparkle that it held, his frown deepened and he gave his best puppy dog eye expression. “Mm.. sad like this.” Jordan replied, as Kaleb looked between the two. He knew it was in good fun but even he found it sad.

That was good. Carlos almost broke for a moment. He could feel the need to make Jordan feel better, and then he remembered that this was a lie. He would not be bested by a lie. He lifted the arm that held his and stared at the connection. With other hand, he took away that touch and slipped back, but he kept his fingers closed around Jordan’s. “That’s too bad.” He backed away, their hands dropped away, and he slipped by Asher and Kaleb and to the door to the next floor. “Guess you’ll have to come get it then.” All of his happiness and charm came back with a flick of his eyes towards him. He opened the door and slid out into the hall. Asher grinned. “You almost got him, babe. I saw that flicker.” He turned to Kaleb. “Yep, they’re going to be the most useful. Shall we?"

Jordan caught that flicker and he almost broke into a smile. What got him was the other hand pulling his hand off Carlos’ arm and the fingers lingered before Carlos backed away. Jordan watched Carlos slip away and saw that happiness and charm come back with that flick of the eyes. Jordan looked where the door had shut behind Carlos and over to Asher. A grin crossed his face as he moved out the door after him. “I’m coming to get it.” Jordan said as Kaleb rolled his eyes. “Yeah, real helpful. Let’s make sure they don’t hurt themselves?” Kaleb suggested as Jordan ducked into the hall and saw Carlos, Jordan was heading towards the side of the hall that was parallel to the hole on the second floor.

Carlos, having been unaware of the hole on the floor below, was heading straight towards the same area. He checked to make sure they weren’t being attacked by infected, and then he swiveled around so that he was walking backwards. He locked eyes with Jordan, finger beckoning him to come and join him. Asher with Kaleb moved out into the hall and sighed. “When I met you guys, I didn’t think they would be at it all the time, but I guess I should have known.” He shook his head. “Can you imagine if they were going after us like that? I would probably have to leave him.” He laughed, because he would never do that.

Jordan watched Carlos swivel around and beckon him with a finger as they locked eyes. A grin spread on his face as he followed, not noticing the shifting in the floor. It was worn from weathering and water damage. But that was hard to tell. Kaleb heard Asher and chuckled, shaking his head. “I can’t imagine that, and yeah. You’d leave Jordan about the same time I’d leave Carlos, never.” Kaleb said with a smile on his face, watching the two men. Jordan stepped onto the thinnest part of the floor as it gave way, his foot disappearing into the hole and the floor broke, cracked and opened up. Jordan’s foot going through it had started a chain reaction on the weak flooring, opening a giant hole that he was now falling into. “NO!” A scream from beside Asher as Kaleb watched the hole open up from under the other men.

Carlos backed up a little further as Jordan came closer. He didn’t even notice the creak in the floor. He was looking at this handsome man and not the part where the floor was a little bit darker where he was stepping. He was looking at his face and not the cracking under their feet. If he had paid attention at all to his surroundings, he might have seen how the world around them had the tell tale signs of being very bad to step on. Especially if they had looked at the floor below. As Jordan’s body began to fall, Carlos’ brows furrowed together. And then he fell too. Everything started rushing up as he started racing down, snagging on breaking wood, splintering his skin in numerous places, and plummeting down through that hole on the floor below. And then some.

“Jordan!” Asher pulled away from Kaleb’s grip and raced down the hall, skidding to a halt too close to the new hole in the floor. “Jordan!” He stepped lightly closer so that he could see down, but what he saw was the hole in the second floor. His heart felt like it was being clenched as it beat too fast for his body to find peace. Because they didn’t stop falling once they reached the main floor. They kept going. Asher whipped his head back around to look at Kaleb. He had never been so afraid in his entire life. Because there went his life.

Jordan’s body hit the main floor but that too gave way under the pressure of being landed on. The swirling of time and air around his ears and face was painful. And then with a grunt and exhale of air forcefully, he landed on a soft surface. Jordan rolled to his side and landed a foot away from the couch, coughing hard. His eyes were wide with fear as he looked around then he looked up as he laid there. His lungs forgot how to work as he ended up taking a deep breath. “A- Asher.. C- Carlos..?” Jordan coughed, trying to get his surroundings.

Kaleb’s heart dropped as he saw Carlos fall. “Carlos!” Kaleb yelled as he moved forward. Stumbling to his knees at the edge of the hole. “Carlos!!” Kaleb yelled again, his heart in his throat as he peered over the edge, fear gripping his body like vice.

Carlos’ reflexes were not at their peak. He had not been prepared for something like this to happen, so it was not until Jordan hit the pain floor and he hit it a moment later that his reflexes finally kicked in. One hand slammed into the ground just as the rest of the ground around them began to break. He held onto the edge for just a moment, his body beginning to fall with the collapsing structure beneath, and his eyes flew up to where they had been. He knew that was Kaleb all the way up there. Him and his beautiful blue eyes. The rest of the floor gave way, and he fell after Jordan, smacking into the couch and rolling mercilessly onto the floor. His entire body was angry, and he felt like he couldn’t breathe. The sound of Jordan’s voice echoed in his mind as he tried to regain his sense of reality. Falling. They fell. He laid there, motionless for a moment, before he turned his head painfully towards the sound. His blurry vision could only barely make out the lump-like mass that he could only hope was Jordan. Words did not come.

They fell. They were falling until they weren’t, and Asher couldn’t see them anymore all the way down there. Who knows, they could have still been falling, and they would never know because he and Kaleb were all the way up here when they needed to be all the way down there. He kept seeing over and over the slow motion fall of Jordan as everything began to collapse. He should have seen it. He should have known this was coming. They were the ones who saw the hole below. He saw the way the floor wasn’t so great on the ground floor. He should have known. The creaks of breaking caught his attention this time. Where? Below Kaleb who was so close to the edge. “Kaleb!” He reached down and grabbed at his sides, wrapped both arms around his chest, and moved back as fast and hard as he could as the floor below them started to collapse too. He flung a string of curses as he stumbled backwards, rolling them out of the way as the floor began to bow down. “Kaleb we need to move away from here now.”

Pain. It echoed around his body as he coughed, trying to figure out just what happened. His eyes struggled to make shapes, blurry vision focusing on everything and nothing. A groan slipped out after he spoke, and he pushed himself to his knees. Blinking away the blurry vision, he focused on a shape a little away from him that he realized was Carlos. His head turned up as debris fell on top of them. Ducking his head once more he waited l, let his body come to terms with the pain. “Carlos..” Jordan hissed quietly. “We have to move!” He looked ahead of them as he tried to figure out where they needed to go.

Kaleb watched the slow motion fall, barely registering the fact that Carlos was slipping away from him. Down. So far down. “No!” Kaleb yelled as he felt hands grab his sides. “No! No no! Carlos!” Kaleb yelled as he was pulled out of the way. He needed to get down there, get to him. He felt himself rolling out of the way as Asher got them to safety. Kaleb wriggled against the arms holding him, eyes locked on the large hole in the floor. “Asher! They.. they’re gone, they fell…” Kaleb could feel the tears in his eyes, as he looked at the floor. No no nonono this wasn’t fair. He’d just gotten over his biggest fear of not losing Carlos to another but now he was gone and Kaleb feared that he wasn’t going to see him ever again. That he’d lost him.

Everything felt fuzzy. That was better than when he really thought about it and realized that everything hurt. It almost felt like everything was shaking around him. Was this what an earthquake felt like? That same voice came back to him. Jordan’s. He could not focus on it. He blinked rapidly, trying to convince his eyes to focus on anything. He looked up. So far up. “Kaleb…” Something fell on him. Several? He didn’t really care, because it didn’t make a whole lot of difference. He was just looking for Kaleb. He was so far up. Could he get back up there? Move. Jordan was telling him to move, but he didn’t know how. His limbs didn’t want to work. Couldn’t? He tried to sit up, and when he did, the hazy world spun like he was a little kid who just stopped running in circles. “Jordan? Jordan, where’s Kaleb?” Up there? He pushed away something on him and tried to stand but fell back over.

Asher kept his grip around Kaleb tight in case the grief and madness of what just happened made him do something stupid like crawl back over there. That floor would not be able to hold their weight. Kaleb’s yells stung Asher as he tried not to think about the fact that the best thing in his whole world fell at least three stories down. When he remembered that, he also thought he might die. He released Kaleb enough only to turn him around so that Asher could grab his attention. He shoved his hands against Kaleb’s cheeks to keep his eyes locked on Asher’s. “I know I know I know stop I know.” This was really bad. This was not something he could will away. This was their reality. “Hey hey I know, but we can’t fall too, okay? We aren’t any use to them if we fall.” Any use like they were still alive. They had to be alive. He wouldn’t accept anything else. “We are going to go back down those stairs and find a way to them, and-“ a screech loud and angry interrupted him. “Oh fu-“ another one tore through the air. “We need to move. Come on, up up up Kaleb we have to move right now.”

Jordan heard Carlos’ words and flicked his eyes up as more debris fell. “He’s up there. With Asher..” Jordan whispered, pushing through the pain shooting in his muscles and standing up. Jordan wavered for a moment before he caught himself. He moved, slowly and painfully, but he moved over to Carlos. A hand on his arm as he helped him stand up. When he’d come over, he saw a dark hallway in front of them. “Masks on just in case. I can’t see if there are spores down there.” Jordan said keeping a hand on Carlos until he was steady then he’d put his mask on.

Kaleb wriggled for a moment, wanting to move to the hole again. Needing to see if his love was alive. His attention was turned to Asher when he was released a little and turned around. Hands on cheeks as teary blue eyes looked at Asher. His cheeks were stained with tears. “Yeah. We can’t.. can’t help them if we fall too.” Kaleb whispered as he blinked away more tears from his eyes. “Okay..” Back to the stairs, find a way. “Okay.” Kaleb swallowed hard as before a screech cut through the air. Oh no. Kaleb tried to get to his feet, struggling for a moment. “Stairs still?” Kaleb asked as he managed to stand, grabbing his pistol and was ready to move thought he did need help still. Stupid leg was still injured and Kaleb hated that he needed help when they had infected coming after them.

Carlos was up. He was mostly falling, but he was up. If he used Jordan as support, they were both going to fall, weren’t they? His breath staggered out through his body. Masks. Right. They needed to not die down here. He reached around and pulled the mask out of pack and put it on his head. He steadied himself until he knew that he was good to move. It hurt, but he could do it. “We have to get back up to them.” He had to get back to Kaleb. He promised that he would never leave him. Never. This could not be why he broke that promise. He hoped that Kaleb knew that he was going to find him again. He would stack all of this debris and this… couch until he could climb out of this hole if he had to. Though, that was a last resort. There had to be some stairs or something. “Down the scary hallway of darkness and death?” There was not much other option.

“Stairs,” Asher agreed as they moved to their feet. He also pulled out his pistol. He was ready to switch guns at any moment though. He kept an arm around Kaleb to help him along. They were going to move slower down there, but that was better than not getting there at all. As they made it back to the stairs, from a room further down came the stumbling movements of the clicker they probably heard before. He aimed, shot, and the clicker fell. It wasn’t until the clicker was falling that he realized that he had not put the silencer on. He groaned as he heard the movement of several runners making their way to the hall now.

Jordan had made sure Carlos was steady and slipped his own mask on. Then he heard his words and turned to look at Carlos. “We will get back to them. I promise. You’ll see your Blue Eyes soon.” Jordan said, as he turned to look at the black hallway. “Unfortunately, yes. Keep your eyes open, and keep quiet. I don’t know what is down here.” Jordan said as he moved forward, hand snagging Carlos’ and the other was holding his pistol. He wanted to be ready for anything. He needed to get back to Asher. And that was what he planned on doing.

Kaleb was thankful for the support, using Asher as a crutch. He needed it. But his heart lurched when he heard the gunshot. Saw the clicker fall and then he heard them. Runners. “Asher?? What do we do? Hold down here or try and escape to the stairs?” Kaleb asked, looking down the hall as the first runner turned the corner, screeching as it ran towards them. More were on their way, he could hear them.

A little smile appeared at his name for Kaleb. Those beautiful blue eyes that still graced his dreams when he could remember them. That was the goal. Find those eyes again. Wrap his arms around his handsome man. Kiss him like the world might end and this was their last chance. He loved being with Jordan, but he was not sure he would ever leave Kaleb’s side again. At least he still had Asher. They could make it through together. He squeezed the hand that took his, thankful for the reassurance. He kept his mouth shut as they began their journey through the dark. He clicked his flashlight on.

Good job, Asher. You really messed it up this time. He groaned and looked at the stairs but shook his head. “I can’t get you down fast enough.” Carlos or Jordan could have, but Asher wasn’t as strong or capable as them like that. His swiftness would not stick for that many stairs. Well, the sound was already out there. He might as well not worry about it then. He raised his hand and shot the runner down the hall. He moved them against a wall so that at least one side was covered. “Time to see how good that FEDRA training was.” He grinned as he shot at another runner that appeared in the hall. The sounds of fast movements were coming from everywhere.

Jordan clicked his flashlight on as they entered the darkness. He was quiet, and around them was quiet. Something wasn’t right. It should not be this quiet in a basement. Jordan’s eyes flicked around, glancing at the ground and then back at the walls. So far there were not other doors or rooms. It was eerily still. Until they got halfway down and then his eyes widened at the distant sound. Thump… thump… Oh no. That wasn’t what he thought it was.. was it? Probably. It would explain the quiet. He squeezed the hand back as he stopped them. “What do you have for weapons?”

Kaleb bit his lip as he heard that. They were going to have to fight. When Asher moved them to the wall, he flattened himself against it. Back flat to the wall. He aimed his pistol up at the runners and shot one that had gotten close. “Here we go.” Kaleb said as he aimed again, another one down. With how weak the flooring was, he wasn’t going to use anything other than his pistol and shotgun. Another shot, another one dropped.

To this point, Carlos was experienced in a total of two kinds of infected. Runners and clickers. He heard about other ones from talk in the QZ and Kaleb being kind enough to inform him. He had not really pushed the subject before now, but he remembered their rules. Things like ignore the clicking behind doors and no talking in the streets. Don’t go in the basement was another one of those rules. So, why didn’t they go in the basements exactly. “Um. Explosives mostly,” he whispered. “Kaleb hadn’t actually taught me how to use the guns yet. But I’ve got a crowbar too. Why? What is down here that scares everyone so much?”

As Asher shot two more that ran in from a room down the hall, he looked over at Kaleb. “I’m sorry that I caused this. I should have checked earlier to make sure the silencer was on it. I was just so…” freaked out by his world falling three stories down. “I shouldn’t have been so impulsive.” The sounds of running came from the stairs, and he was quickly using a lot of bullets. “Stay here. You shoot bad guys, and I will be right back.” He moved quickly a little down the hall to pick up a pipe that he saw as they were shooting. He ran to the stairs just as the first runner came up. He rammed the pipe into his head and kicked it down into the second runner. “I don’t think I like this building very much.”

Jordan looked at Carlos, hearing him and then turning his attention to the source of the sound. “Listen. Do you hear him?” Jordan asked quietly, that thumping was there but quiet. He thought about how they could work this. The building’s basement seemed in okay shape, explosives shouldn’t ruin the rest of the building. “That my friend is a bloater. Heavily armored, huge, and really hard to kill. We’ll need explosives but we need to watch out too. Usually these guys have company with them. Crash course in guns. Load it..” Jordan loaded his pistol showing Carlos. “Aim. Then press the trigger. Pistols don’t have the kickback like rifles, so just hold steady, your hand may move but it shouldn’t be too bad.” Jordan said. “Are you comfortable with that or you can throw the explosives and I’ll shoot whatever joins us.”

Kaleb fired at two more as he heard Asher. “It’s fine. We’ll get through this. We have too.” Kaleb said as determination dripped in his voice. He watched Asher go as he kept firing, downing runner after runner. “I’m with you. I would very much like not to be here anymore.” Kaleb commented as he fired again.

Yes, he could hear that. It sounded large. It sounded dangerous. It sounded like exactly the reason that Kaleb told him that they were not allowed to go into basements. This was fine. They had two of them, and they could get through anything, He decided. He pulled out a fun to mimic what Jordan just did. “You know, the best way to learn is by doing, right?” He grinned. “Plus, I really like to make spatter art. If you forget that it’s gore, it’s stunning.” Carlos knew that if they could get through this bloater, then they could get back to Kaleb. He was confident in it. “Throw some things, shoot some things, hit some things. It can’t be that difficult.” Despite feeling a little woozy still, he bounded forward. “Let’s go take out a big, scary guy.”

Asher rammed his foot into the side of a clicker’s head, listening to the snap of its neck. “Kaleb, how many more do you see up there? Because I think it was only these guys on the stairs. We can start moving down if you think we are clear. I’ve only got a handful of bullets left after that.” He kicked the bodies of dead infected out of the way for them to go down.

Jordan shook his head and gave a quiet chuckle at those words. “Oh boy. Okay. Here we go.” Jordan replied, turning to continue walking down the hall. A door on their left was up ahead and the thumping was louder now. Echoing and bouncing off the walls around them. “Throw the first explosive at him and then get ready.” Jordan said as they came to the door and he peeked around. There was the bloater, and a few runners were around him. “Now!” Jordan hissed as he got his pistol ready to fire.

Kaleb shot one more before he looked towards the stairs. “That was the last one, we’re good to move.” Kaleb said as he used the wall to head towards Asher. Keeping an eye on the hall just in case.

Was he prepared for what a bloater actually was? Absolutely not. Would that have stopped him if he had known? Nope. Carlos was a creature of impulse and want. He wanted to get through this dark and scary basement, so that was what he was going to do. That was the only way back to Kaleb. It was also kind of fun. If he couldn’t have fun doing things, was it even worth it? Carlos had his first explosive ready as they moved into the room. Holy- Well, that was something else. He threw the bomb, and it exploded on the giant thing. The thing screamed or possibly roared. Oh oh okay this was fine. He tried to shoot with the gun but wildly missed. So his aim wasn’t so great yet. You know, that was fine. And that big ugly guy was looking right at him. The runners were doing what they do. Running. Jordan was shooting, right? Okay. Then they needed to not be on him. Carlos took off into the room screaming, “What up, big dude? And you little dudes. Wanna party? I love to party!” Because if they went after Carlos, then Jordan could shoot them. If he could get far enough away, he could throw another bomb at the bloater.

Asher ran back up the stairs to Kaleb. “How do you feel about a piggy back ride this time? That way you have your hands free to keep me safe from the scary things I hear down there?” Shooting while carrying him normally was not an option, and he was afraid that if they tried to walk him normally that it would go less than well for both of them.

Jordan heard the thing roar as it was hit, and he started firing at the runners and clickers at the same time. His eyes widened as he heard Carlos yell and run, but he kept his pistol up and covered the other man. He didn’t have a lot of bullets so he was being extremely careful of how he shot. “Okay. Carlos! You’re clear! Toss another one.” Jordan called as he shot the last runner that was standing at the moment.

Kaleb nodded as he saw Asher coming up the stairs. “Let’s do this.” He said, determination to get to Carlos running through his veins. He was going to make it. They both were and he wasn’t going to leave his side. “I’m ready for that piggy back ride.” Kaleb said, moving to get onto Asher’s back.

Carlos was just going to keep running until something told him that he didn’t have to anymore. Like Jordan telling him that he was clear. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bloater was moving towards him. He pulled out the next bomb and twisted around to throw it just as something else fell in front of him and exploded. He fell back as the air felt like it was exploding. “What is that?!” He scrambled away as he looked down at his clothes. The looked like they were melting. “Did that thing- Did it just throw spores at me?!” He ran until he felt like he was a good way off and then threw the bomb.

Asher shoved his pack on his chest and bent down before hefting Kaleb onto his back. As soon as they were set, he started moving them down the stairs as quickly as he could go. “Hold on tight. If we have more down there, which I am pretty sure I hear, you may have to rely on your strong legs.” He moved quickly around the bodies of the infected he killed. As he ran past the door to the floor below, a runner came from in front of them.

Jordan slammed his hand on his forehead as he heard Carlos. “Uh, yeah. They throw spore bombs. Sorry.” Jordan called as he heard the bloater roar again. “Did it get on your skin?” Jordan called as he fired at the stalkers that had joined the party this time. “Watch out for these guys. Stalkers! They creep around.” Jordan yelled as he kept firing at each infected he could see. One last explosive should drop the bloater. “Whenever you’re ready for the last one! Throw it!” Jordan called.

Kaleb held onto Asher, leaning his chest against the others back. That gave him the ability to keep his hands free and pistol ready. “You just get us down there okay?” Kaleb said just as the runner appeared. A quick fire from Kaleb’s pistol dropped it and they were able to continue down the stairs.

“They throw spore bombs?!” Carlos backed up just to feel something grabbing at his legs. He leapt up onto a large container of something. Below him was one of said creeping stalkers. The second he looked at it, that thing ran into the shadows. “This is why I’m not allowed in the basement. That’s what I am learning right now.” Something felt something off behind him, and he turned to see one of them climbing up to visit him. He kicked at its head as hard as he could, and it fell back down and scurried away. He took the opportunity to throw the bomb at the bloater. It yelled, slowed, began to fall, and then exploded. Carlos hopped off and dropped to the floor to hide from the explosion. “Jordan! They explode spores too?!” It was a good thing that the adrenaline kicked in to get him through this.

Asher kept them running. He didn’t even slow when the runner came at them, because he trusted Kaleb to clear the path. He did. He moved fast as he heard the screeches of something else from below. “Were they all asleep before? Where did they all come from?” They made it to the ground floor, and he growled as the rest of the way down was blocked. So that was not how they were getting to the basement.
