The first day of school. The first day of Junior year. It was something Matt had been looking forward to since his first day as a freshman, but now? He dreaded it. He’d spent the night glaring at the clock as the numbers ever so slowly made their way towards dawn, unable to sleep. Unable to do anything but stare towards the photo wall he hadn’t been able to take down these last few months. Photos of him and Stella, ranging from when they were toddlers, barely able to walk, to a few days before she...before she disappeared. Photos of the happiest years of his life.

Now, the photos were all he had left. He’d folded the hoodies that still smelled like her perfume and shoved them in the back of his closet, out of sight, and...not out of mind. He’d taken all the gifts they’d exchanged and stuffed them in the chest that sat in the corner of his room, desperate to be rid of any reminder of his girlfriend. His best friend. When he’d gotten to the photos he hadn’t been able to take them down, so now Matt spent the majority of his day staring at them, waiting for her to come home.

She couldn’t...she couldn’t be dead. Bubbly, carefree, golden Stella Denver wasn’t dead, and yet that was what the whole town seemed to believe. Even her stuck up, no good parents. Next week they were going to bury an empty casket just to prove it. It was as if the whole world had moved on, and Matt was left behind, stuck in the past. Stuck in the memories, the feelings, the smells. And he hated it. Matthew Foster, who hated nothing and no one, hated himself for still caring.

Groaning, he heaved himself off of the cold wooden floor where he’d been laying next to his bed, the world spinning around him. An empty bottle of Jack Daniel’s lay by his feet and Matt nudged it with a bare foot, watching blearily as it slid a few inches across the floor, the sound of it grating against his eardrums. His head throbbed, and his tongue felt thick and heavy in his mouth, like a wad of cotton. What would Stella think of him now, going to school on the first day with a hangover? Matt didn’t want to know the answer. He’d been desperate to forget, if only for the night. Instead he’d sat on the floor crying like a fucking baby. Pathetic. He was truly pathetic.

He stumbled towards his bathroom, bumping into more than a few walls on the way. Flicking on the light he swore, wincing against the abrasive brightness, rubbing at his temples with icy fingers. His house was silent; his mother was still asleep and his father at work. Good. Matt wasn’t sure he could look them in the eyes anyways.

Sighing, he studied his reflection in the mirror, frowning at what he saw. Red rimmed, swollen red eyes, deep purple bags lining them. The barest hint of golden blonde stubble gracing his jaw, his shoulders slumped and curved inwards, skin wan, mouth set in a grimace. He looked just as pathetic as he felt, and he had to leave...he looked down at the phone he hadn’t realized he had clenched in his hands. 7:11. Great. He had to leave in less than five minutes.

Snatching his toothbrush from where it lay by the sink, Matt scrubbed furiously at his mouth, hoping the smell of liquor would be gone by the time he got to school. After he was done, he splashed at his face with cold water, not bothering to dry himself off before striding back into his room and digging through his closet haphazardly, looking for an acceptable outfit. Not that he cared, it was just that...he had a show to put on. Bubbly, happy, innocent Matt had to make an appearance or else nothing would be right in the world. He settled on a baby blue crew neck sweater and khaki pants, before shoving his (now socked) feet into a pair of white sneakers, not bothering to tie the laces before grabbing his keys from where they were thrown on his dresser, creeping down the stairs as quietly as possible and out the door, backpack slung over his shoulder.

The drive to the school wasn’t long by any means, but it certainly stirred up memories. Matt looked to the empty passenger seat, tears welling in his eyes for the umpteenth time that morning as a bombardment of memories flashed before his eyes. Memories of Stella in the seat besides him, feet propped up on the dashboard no matter how many times he’d jokingly scolded her for leaving smudge marks on it. Memories of them driving through town with the windows down in the summer, hand in hand with music blasting through the speakers. She’d stick her head out the window like she hadn’t a care in the world, her blonde hair whipping around like a tumbleweed. Memories of their first kiss in the backseat at a drive-in movie and eventually their first time…

Matt pushed the thoughts from his mind as he came to a stop sign, realizing he’d drifted into the middle of the road. He needed to stop thinking, stop feeling, stop caring, or he was going to wind up hurt. Or, worse, someone else was going to get hurt, and Matt didn’t think he’d be able to live with himself if that happened. He pulled into the parking lot of Benton Grove High School, the place that had been both his home and his prison for the past three years. Now it looked like a boneyard, bleak and grey in the dim morning light.

There weren’t many people there, and he was able to park close to the entrance. He turned the engine off and sat for a minute, staring at his driving wheel blankly. That god damn headache was still pressing at his temples, and his stomach rumbled uncomfortably, to the point where Matt wasn’t sure if he was hungry, or nauseas, or both. Letting out a weary sigh, he finally stepped out of the car, banging his head on the top of the door on his way. He swore sharply, snatching his bag from the back seat before walking towards the school building, scowl set on his face.

Matt stopped just before the doors, hand hovering over the handle. Why was he hesitating? It was just school. School without Stella. School without...he clenched his brown eyes shut for a second, heartbeat thundering in his chest as his breath began coming out in uneven pants. He was going to have a panic attack, like he’d been having almost everyday since she disappeared, wasn’t he? God had a funny way of doing things, didn’t he. He really enjoyed fucking up Matt’s life when he expected it the least.

"you've got a friend..."

kye larson

Kye parked his car near the entrance of the school. It was the start of his senior year. He only had to make it through one more year of high school, and he'd finally be out of this hellhole of a town. No matter how hard he tried, he could never find a place in high school where he belonged. Every time he tried to fit in, he was pushed away. He was a bit of an outcast, and that was fine. Deep down, however, he desperately hoped that this year would be different. He hoped that he wouldn't have to feel alone again, that he wouldn't have to spend another year as a complete outsider, that he wouldn't constantly be kicked around like a small, innocent puppy.

But perhaps he wasn't completely alone... he always had music. Music was the only thing that made him happy, especially after his friend's disappearance. For the duration of the summer, Kye found himself at his piano, attempting desperately to get his emotions out. He never cried, he didn't feel the need to. All he really needed was a semi-positive outlook. Stella couldn't actually be dead, right? It was impossible. Everyone seemed to like her, so it was very unlikely that she could've been murdered. And it couldn't have been a freak accident, either... or a suicide. She has to be alive somewhere.

...But what if she's not?

Kye recalled giving her piano lessons, piano was something she enjoyed. She seemed to understand him and his passion for music, probably one of the only people who did. She was quite talented, too, especially for a beginner. He smiled a bit at the memory of Stella sitting at the piano, plunking out her favorite songs. Teaching her made him incredibly happy, and now she was just... gone. Probably forever. He closed his eyes. He wished he was still in bed, or at least anywhere but at school, memories of Stella replaying over and over in his head. Stupid memories. He wanted to force a smile and pretend everything was okay, even though it wasn't. He'd participated in a few local plays, why couldn't he just... act? Why does this whole mess have to be different?

Opening his eyes, Kye opened the car door and stepped out, walking towards the entrance, slightly surprised to see Matthew Foster, golden boy, with a shaky hand hovering over the door handle. He moved a bit closer. His facial expression said it all, he was sleep deprived, and he'd been crying. A lot. Which was understandable, his girlfriend of two years disappeared out of nowhere. He couldn't even imagine himself in Mattie's situation, he didn't know what he would do. As he approached the football player, worry filled Kye's eyes. The poor kid looked like he was about to have a panic attack. Careful not to make any sudden movements, Kye rested a hand on the other boy's shoulder. He'd had his fair share of panic attacks, he knew what it was like. He wanted to help Mattie, even if only a little bit. "Hey... it's okay... just breathe..." he mumbled, giving a soft smile in an attempt to calm him down. "Just... close your eyes and focus on one thing... like the feeling of your shirt on your body..." He was reciting the things that calmed him down. Sure, they didn't always work, but they usually at least helped a little.

"Breathe... you got this..." he whispered, wanting more than anything to pull the younger boy into a hug and tell him it was going to be okay, even though it probably wasn't. "It's okay... we can go somewhere... and just talk, if you want..." He didn't seem to be thinking about what he was saying, cutting class normally wouldn't even cross his mind. But this wasn't normal. Not even close. "Or... not talk. We don't have to talk about it if you don't want to," he quickly added, figuring Matt might not want to talk with Kye of all people about his girlfriend flat-out disappearing. Kye didn't like talking about his emotions at all, why would Matt want to talk with a near stranger about Stella's disappearance?

Of course he wouldn't.

And that was completely fine.

The summer, to put it lightly, had sucked. Not because of Stella’s disappearance, though that had certainly added to it. No. It had sucked, simply because Rowan hadn’t had a single moment to relax, to spend time at the water hole like everyone else. Instead, she’d spent the past three months zipping around the town at the beck and call of whichever friend needed her most at the moment. In between she had to take care of her mother, her father and her three, needy younger siblings, on top of working double shifts at the diner.

Normally she wouldn’t have minded it—Rowan loved her friends, and family, as well as her job—but she was running thin. She just wanted one day—one—to sit back and relax. To sleep. It was wishful thinking, she knew, but wishful thinking was all that she was running on at the moment.

Her alarm had gone off far too early, and she was exhausted, but...at least she had time to get ready. It was the first day of senior year, she was going to look her best. And hopefully pick up some breakfast and coffee for her and Jules before school. Ro had already taken a shower—thankfully taming her head of messy blonde curls—and now she sat on her bed, towel wrapped around her as she contemplated the outfits choices she’d laid out the night before.

Normally she would have just called Toby and he would’ve been more than happy to help her pick, that adorable grin of his lighting up his face. He’d been her best friend long before they’d ever dated, but Rowan had gone and ruined things by breaking up with him. Now he wouldn’t even look her in the eyes. It hurt more than she cared to admit, but being in a relationship with someone she had no romantic feelings for had been exhausting. So she’d ended it, on the last day of school last year. The kick off to the most truly awful summer of her life.

Rowan knew she shouldn’t complain—Jules and Matt and Baz and whoever else had just lost their best friend and girlfriend, and Rowan was upset about ending things with a perfect guy and being busy for a few months. It was selfish, something she prided herself on not being. Sighing, she grabbed the outfit closest to her: a black short sleeved shirt and a pair of jean shorts. Simple but cute enough. Besides, no matter what she wore, heads had never truly turned in her direction. Not with Jules and Ada and Yessi striding confidently through the halls. Her friends were all beautiful, inside and out. Rowan couldn’t have been more proud of the people they’ve become these last few years.

When she was dressed and satisfied with the way she looked, she grabbed her keys, bag—which was chock full of snacks, a first aid kit, extra clothes and you name it—and headed down the stairs, popping into her mother’s room. “Hi mama,” she whispered, leaning down to peck her on the cheek gently. “I have school today. Is there anything you need before I leave? Dad’s just in the other room, and he knows I have to leave, so he’ll try and help you today, okay?” Rowan continued, the brightest smile she could muster up plastered on her face. It hurt to see her mother like this. Pale and so, so skinny. She truly wasn’t getting any better.

Her mom merely reached up a shaking hand and placed it on Rowan’s cheek, green eyes crinkling in a smile. “I’m fine, Rowan. Stop worrying about me. Go to school and have fun. I love you,” she murmured. Ro could tell it took more effort than it should have and she chewed on her bottom lip anxiously, before straightening and pulling the blankets up higher around her mother’s frail shoulders. “I love you too, mama.”

She exited the room, shutting the door with a soft click behind her before UC king into the living room, where her father was sitting in his recliner, staring out the window as he always did. Rowan came to a stop before him, frowning. “I have to leave now, dad, for school. Maggie, Oakley and Ash have school at eight. Can you please make sure they catch the bus on time? I made pancakes last night, so all they have to do is heat them up in the microwave,” she asked, praying that her father didn’t forget. She’d set her younger siblings alarms before they had gone to bed the night before, but knowing them they would turn them off and go back to sleep. When she didn’t get a response, Rowan scowled, before turning on her heel and walking out the front door.

They weren’t her kids. Her father would get them up or ready or he wouldn’t, but it wasn’t on Rowan. She tried her best, but she was seventeen. She was still growing, still expected to be immature and brash. She wasn’t...she wasn’t ready to give up her freedom just yet. And maybe that was the most selfish thought of all, but she really couldn’t bring herself to care. She wanted to live—to go to parties, and get shit faced and smoke way too much weed and kiss boys (and girls because girls are hot)—and when she graduated, she didn’t have to go to college. She could stay home and watch her friends leave her behind. And that would have to be the price for her selfishness.

Jumping into her car, her antique Cadillac convertible that was her pride and joy, Rowan sped off in the direction of Benton Grove’s one and only coffee shop, desperate to make it there before a line formed, as it did every morning. She was lucky—when she arrived there were only three cars in front of her, and ordering two iced coffees, an iced tea and two bagels was easy work. Thankfully Jules lived right down the road from the cafe, and driving there took all of two minutes after she paid.

When she pulled into the cheerleader’s driveway, she pulled out her phone and sent a quick text to the blonde beauty, unsure if her bitch mother was still sleeping.

Hey baby, I’m here with breakfast and coffee so get your cute ass out here. XoXo.

Waking up, Beauxchamp immediately slammed down on his alarm clock.
Who in the Jesus fuck said that the dispensery opened at 5:00 am?
He groaned, wiping at his eyes in hopes of getting the gunk out of them. He stretched upward into a sitting position, before quickly laying back down to snooze for another 10 minutes.

Finally, when his alarm clock woke him up again, he got out of bed. Grabbing his jeans out of the pile of dirty clothes, Beaux was happy that his style allowed him to not worry as much about the look of things, so long as it wasn't smelly. It only took him a few minutes to get dressed, and he spritzed on some cologne, mildly aware that he should use it in moderation to avoid smelling like a middle-schooler. The most effort he put into the day's outfit was in his hair, which he stopped at his mirror to
fuck with
(in his words). Would he opt for a headband to hold his hair back or let it flop? Given he was about to go purchase an absurd amount of carts, he chose the more mysterious route. Hair in the eyes it is. Slipping on his rings, including his mom's wedding band which fit his ring finger, Beaux stepped into the hall.

His mother sat at the kitchen table, drinking coffee. She had kindly set out a mug of coffee, with mostly creme and sugar in it, given she was dimly aware of what her son was doing up so early. Even Layla couldn't deny what her son did for a living, though she wasn't necessarily a huge supporter of it. And she didn't even know about the dime bags sitting in the bottom of his backpack. All she knew was that Beaux sold carts that he bought with his med card for anxiety, up charging the price in order to make money for college. Ultimately, that's all that mattered: Beaux was going to college, or so she thought. Really, he didn't know what he was doing, and that is perhaps why he was looking to profit off of a bunch of grieving teenagers.

Though that's a bit morbid, he knew what was to come. He was dimly aware of the Disney kid currently taking residence at the Astors, and it wasn't necessarily a massive secret that Stella's friends were grieving their loss. Hell, everyone was set to attend her funeral in a few days. While everyone wasn't exactly Beaux's biggest fan at the moment, considering many people think he's got something to do with her being gone, he was sure that a few kids would meet with him in secret and exchange some cash for some green or some powdered.

Sitting at the table, he sipped on his coffee and smiled at his mom.
"What are you up to today?"

"Nothing much, just work,"
was all she said before looking down at her paper. While it seemed a little cold, Layla gave her son a smile to show she just wasn't in the mood to talk this early.

He nodded, sipping on his coffee until the cup was empty. He checked his phone, noting the time was 4:52 a.m.
"Shit, I gotta go."
He scrambled up, putting the cup in the dishwasher and running to give his mom a kiss on the cheek and a small hug.

"Love you!"
he yelled out the door, clicking on his keys to unlock his pickup truck.

Picking up a slew of Plats at the dispo was easy pickings for Beaux, who prided himself on being consistent in his quality. Since his inception as the local dealer, he hadn't seen a single overdose on coke or some sort of popcorn lung from the carts he's bought. Always lab tested, always safe to consume. He placed all of the carts in the dufflebag that sat in the back of his car, stuffed under the seat. Of course, he'd take them home and put them in his room after his A.A. meeting today, but for now it was a good hiding place. Swinging his car door shut, he sat back and waited for his supplier to show up.

As per usual, it took Harris twenty minutes longer than he said it would for him to show up. Beaux didn't complain though. The only way to get his hands on coke was through Harris or organized crime ties, and he wasn't exactly eager to join a cartel or try to get in with the Mob. Harris had ties that Beaux opted to leave unexposed. All that mattered is that Harris was doing him a favor, and probably the rest of Beaton Grove one too. There was no gang presence here, and the only people getting confronted by highbrow criminals was rich dads who were in over their heads. Plus, it certainly helped that Harris looked more like an old farmer than a man with devious ties.

Finally, at around 6:30 a.m., Harris showed. Beaux sighed, getting mildly annoyed that the man was almost 40 minutes late this time. Thankfully, he didn't have to get out of the car, and he kept any comments about the old man to himself.
This is just a business deal
, he thought to himself. Letting out a breath, he turned to Harris.

"How much do I owe you?"
he asked.

Harris stuffed the ziploc freezer bag filled with little dime bags into the dufflebag.
"Money,"
he said as a joke. Beaux only smiled, not willing to give Harris the benefit of a laugh. After a moment, he continued,
"You've got about a half of a kilo there, so the usual. Plus servicing fees for packaging them and of course, a delivery free and tip is more than appreciated."

Beaux rolled his eyes.
"Alrighty."
He got out of the truck and Harris followed suit. Moving around to the back, he opened up the back. There was another bag, similar to the one he put all his drugs in.

"Thanks, man, for letting me borrow your tools,"
he said with a little bit of a louder voice than usual.

Harris squinted at Beaux.
"Quit it, you goon. No one is looking for a small time dealer in fuckin' Beaton Grove."

Well, at least now Beaux knew Harris was innocent in regards to Stella's death. Or at least he was a touch more confident in the idea.
"I mean that girl is dead. It'd be no surprise if there were a few people being a little suspicious of our monthly meetings."
He pulled the bag out of the truck, and Harris opened it.

"Ya know, kid, for a guy who's supposedly doing all of this for a college fund, you've probably paid me for a degree five times over at this point. And I know you're making more than ten grand every month, otherwise you wouldn't be payin' me."

Clearing his throat, he zipped up the bag for Harris.
"Don't worry about it, old man."
He rolled his eyes.
What business did he have, putting himself in Beaux's business?
It made Beaux a little pissed, frankly, and he no longer was interested in prolonging this deal to shoot the shit.
"I'll see you 'round, Harry,"
he said before getting back into the cab of the truck and heading to BGHS.

The ride to school was quick, probably due to Beaux speeding. He always got an adrenaline rush after deals with Harris. Whipping around Bessie, his truck, into a parking lot, he laid his head back for a moment. Today was going to be long, and he was sure he wasn't going to remain unscathed from people's glares and maybe even an offhand comment. All he wanted was to get to his A.A. meeting and then put the duffle bag in his house.

He turned the radio up, blaring DK, and started stuffing a few dime bags into the secret compartment of his backpack. He'd leave the carts in here, given how clunky they are in their packaging, but he'd carry the receipt with him to prove that they were real. Any buyer would meet him during lunch or after school. Beaux had a set way of doing business, which everyone knew, but it still gave him a rush to walk around with the coke on him. Everything about his 'job' gave him adrenaline, and he liked it that way. The music was screaming now, and he got out of the car, with the music stopping abruptly.

Slinging his backpack on his shoulder, Beaux pushed his hair back before walking towards the doors. He was gonna kick today's ass.

Adalezya Godfrey
Gentle rays of sun slowly crept through the partially drawn curtains and splashed on the two figures lying in bed, their limbs tangled together in a somewhat loving way. The young woman in the bed felt the warmth of morning settled over her tanned skin and it made her stir, her eyes squeezing shut a bit tighter since she was facing the light that was filling her bedroom. With only a few minutes of direct sunlight, Adalezya was awake and groaning softly, burying her face in the plush pillows, not wanting to get up in order to get ready for school. There was really no reason for her to get up anyways, especially since her summer had been so shitty. It had been three months filled with sleepless nights, endless tears, breaking things out of frustration, and burning self-hatred as she cursed herself for being such an awful person. She had been painfully self-destructive the entire time, despite how happy and put together she acted in person and on social media. She had spent so much time repeating conversations in her head, trying to manifest a different outcome. Any comfort she had sought out was rejected and left her feeling more empty and broken inside than before.

However, the previous night was her breaking point. It was the last day of summer and she couldn’t keep going. Her legs had carried her over to the only place that she felt safe at, lips quivering and breath uneven as she sat on the curb, just waiting for him to show up. Marcel was the one person that Adalezya couldn’t move on from. Those two years of them being together, laughing, and having fun behind closed doors had unfortunately caused the girl to really fall for him. That wasn’t something she did. She didn’t fall for people, she cut them out before that could happen. But for some reason, she couldn’t do that to him. So when she started letting her guard down, started showing the fragile pieces of her heart to him and she was met with bitter words on both sides, it really hurt. She didn’t know why she said those things, accused him of expecting too much from her when it was just a physical relationship, but she was desperate to hide the ugly parts of her soul. She didn’t want him of all people to see that she wasn’t perfect.

But when he found her and brought her into his house, she fell to pieces, practically begging him for his forgiveness, her heart clinging to the possibility that they could go back to the way things were before. It seemed like it might’ve been hopeless but when he agreed to go with her back to her place, she couldn’t stop herself from hoping. They talked for hours at her place and for the first time in her life, Adadlezya opened up to someone and let them see inside of her twisted feelings and thoughts, and much to her surprise he only wrapped her up in a warm embrace, setting her heart at ease. She slept soundly for the first time in months, curled up in his arms, not wanting to let him go.

The memories were a big blur in her mind as she shifted onto her side, her dark hair cascading down her shoulder and back, light eyes trained on the sleeping features of Mars. Adalezya didn’t know what they were but she was okay with that, she just wanted to enjoy him and the time they spent together. The ghost of a smile played on her lips before she sat up in the bed, pulling the sheets around her bare frame, a hand running back through her long hair, hoping that it didn’t look too awful. She knew that she needed to get ready first since she took the longest but she felt bad about leaving Mars alone. It only took her a few minutes to decide that she had to get up and be a human. Awkwardly scooting over to the side of her bed, Adalezya tried to grab her robe so she wasn’t completely on display for whatever weird neighborhood boy that might be trying to peak through her open curtains.

She barely managed to grab it and put it around her figure before she felt a toned arm wrap around her waist, effectively pulling her back into bed. A laugh escaped her lips as she looked at the culprit, knowing that Mars wasn’t going to be happy about letting her leave the bed. “Mars, I have to get up. It’s a school day and I’m not playing hooky.” Her words were light and airy, obviously filled with happiness as she struggled to pry his arm off her body. Eventually, he gave way and she got out of the bed, pulling the blankets back up on the other’s body. “Just sleep some more.” The walk to her bathroom was short and she allowed the fabric to fall from her shoulders as she turned on the water, stepping underneath it to enjoy the few minutes of alone time. The hot water kneaded her muscles and helped wash away the morning anxiety and concern that was bubbling up in her chest so that she could breathe.

Once she was done with her shower she pulled back the curtains to grab her towels, wrapping one around her body and the other around her hair as she went over to the counter, grabbing her toothbrush and turning on the sink. Placing the toothpaste on the baby pink toothbrush, she began to brush her teeth, making sure that there was nothing but pearly whites and fresh breath left behind. Rising her mouth out with water, she reached under her sink to grab mouth wash, grimacing slightly as the taste was far from pleasant. It stung the cuts on the inside of her cheeks from her anxiously biting them when she was talking to Mars. Still, she was left feeling refreshed and a bit more like herself. Although she knew that she didn’t look the best, her eyes tinged with red, obviously due to the constant tears that had been shed only hours before, but it was nothing a little makeup couldn’t hide.

The makeup hid all her imperfections and eye drops helped wash away the redness in her eyes, leaving behind the flawless Adalezya Godfrey that Benton Grove had learned to know and love. The young woman pulled the towel off her head and let her damp hair fall down her shoulders before grabbing some product and a brush, eager to look put together. Dark waves tumbled down her frame, spilling down her back and chest, her bangs framing her unique features, and ultimately breathing life back into her body. The next obstacle was picking out an outfit but honestly, she didn’t have anyone she needed to impress so she didn’t spend too much time in her closet. The white Nike skirt hugged her hips and thighs, clashing with the deep honey skin tone of hers, the matching white crop top tight against her frame. The whole outfit complimenting her tan and all the work she put into her figure so it helped boost her confidence. Normally that would’ve been enough for her but for some reason, she slipped on the cropped sweater-vest and a pearl necklace.

Finally, she felt like a real human. Adalezya wandered over to her bed, climbing back on it with a big smile on her lips. She began to pepper kisses against Mars’ skin, quietly whispering that he needed to get up so they could go to school. So maybe she was forgetting her rules and acting more like a girlfriend than a FWB, but she couldn’t stop herself from indulging in expressing her happiness. She just hoped that the day wouldn’t get ruined by someone from school, but she knew that with the shadow of Stella’s death/disappearance, there was bound to be tension. Maybe it was selfish of her, but she just wanted to enjoy the time she had with Mars and not think of anything or anyone else.

59 days. That’s how long it’d been since Stella Denvers had gone missing and her jackass cousin had started ignoring Jules.

It’d been 31 days since Jules had started to think the two were connected.

Baz wasn’t a jackass—who was Jules kidding? She was just bitter—betrayed, even. It wasn’t as if Baz hadn’t ignored her before—he had been known to avoid her for days at a time in order to get her riled up so he could make it up to her later—but this had gone on for far too long. Before Stella went missing, Jules had started to slip under the illusion that there was something there between her and Baz, but alas. Now, he wasn’t answering any of Jules’ texts after he’d read them, and the smell of weed no longer lingered in the corners of Jules’ bedroom. What bothered her the most, though, was that Stella had been her best friend, too. Jules missed her terribly, but when she needed someone who could relate to what she was going through the most, Baz had decided that that was his cue to leave.

Well, that was just fine. Two can play at that game, Jules thought, slipping into her floral pink dress. It covered just enough that it wouldn’t get her sent to the office, but just barely. If Baz wanted to ignore her, then Jules wanted him to suffer.

There wasn’t just the issue of Baz and Stella, though. There was also Hunter. The mere thought of him sent chills over Jules’ skin, though whether they were the good kind or the bad kind, she could never tell. They all sort of felt the same, now. She and Hunter had broken up at the start of the summer, but their breakups were never permanent. No matter how messy, in the end, they always came crawling back to each other. Jules hated that about herself. She craved love and affection and didn’t care what form it came in or who it came from. She blamed her parents for that.

Actually, there were many things that Jules hated about herself, despite popular belief. One of those things was the way she looked—if she didn’t know any better, she’d say that she had gained a little weight recently. Turning to the side in front of the full-length mirror leaning against her wall, Jules placed her hands on her waist, her fingertips digging ever so slightly into her flesh. She wasn’t bad, but she could always be better. That mindset was something else her parents had so graciously given her.

Maybe she could skip breakfast for the day. It’s not like that was an especially important meal, anyway.

Jules sat down on the edge of her bed and strapped on one of her hot pink platform heels. They were unreasonably tall and would’ve been hard for most people to walk in, but they didn’t cause much of a problem for Jules. Given her short stature, wearing obnoxiously high heels was a habit that she had developed fairly early on. Even as a kid, she had liked to stumble around the house in her mom’s pumps and jewelry. Some things never change with age.

As Jules reached down for her other shoe, she found it missing. Her pale eyes darted around in confusion before she slid down to her knees and peeked under the bed.

That’s where she found the heel—its bright pink material peeking out from beneath the black fabric of a pair of sweatpants. They were Baz’s—he’d left them behind the last time he’d come over—and Jules had recently moved them out of the dresser drawer in which they’d been living and into the dark abyss of missing things that had accumulated under her bed. She could’ve just as easily dropped them off at his house when Baz wasn’t there, but as much as she hated to admit it, she didn’t want to get rid of them. She probably would eventually, once she got mad enough, but she wasn’t quite there yet. She didn’t want to look at them, either, though, so hiding them in a place they wouldn’t haunt her was the only option. Either way, she wasn’t sleeping in them anymore, so that was progress.

Jules shoved the sweatpants to the side and grabbed her shoe. As she was stuffing her foot into it, her phone buzzed from where it was buried in the blankets on her bed. When she picked it up, the screen came to life, displaying a message from Rowan, who was letting Jules know that she was waiting for her outside.

Despite it all, Jules smiled a bit. She didn’t deserve a friend like Ro, and yet there she was, helping Jules through everything, even if she didn’t know all the details.

It was early, and Jules’ mom was still asleep when she crept downstairs—something that the girl was immensely grateful for. Jules was already feeling bad about herself, and the last thing she needed was for her mom to repeat the words that the voices in her head were already telling her.

Jules gave her makeup another quick check in the mirror on the foyer wall before quietly slipping out into the early morning air. The blonde pulled the flimsy, pink cardigan tighter around her shoulders as she made her way to Rowan’s car. Beauty really was a pain in the ass sometimes, especially when one’s ass is nearly exposed to the cold.

Plastering on a smile to hide the pain, Jules pulled open the passenger side door. “Hey, babe!” she greeted Ro as she sat down and grabbed the coffee that had been offered to her. “How was your summer?” The sentence sounded unnatural coming out of Jules’ mouth—she was making small talk to avoid addressing the many elephants that she had brought with her into Rowan’s car.

"you're not gonna be like this all day, right?"

Home.

A relative term. Home is where you’re supposed to feel safe. Secured. To live without having to look over your shoulder, or anticipate an attack.

For Hunter, Benton Grove High School was his home. His territory where he felt untouchable. Its fields were his playing ground. When the lights shone down over him, the ball in his hands with rival students between him and the endzone… He felt untouchable. An unwavering sense of safety, and assuredness that by the end of this play, the crowd would be howling his name.

When the summer came around that feeling of home; The feeling of belonging vanished.

He was no longer in his domain, the school.

The Rhodes estate was unbearable for Hunter. The fights between his parents were only growing worse. His mother was bold about her infidelity, and his father becoming increasingly violent. He only knew this from the few times he returned home for clothes and cash.

Hunter had spent his summer outside, as much as he could. In the morning he trained with Matt, kept in shape and was able to feel a sense of liberty when his friend threw to him. He’d stopped by Jules’ home a couple times… but that was all it was. They weren’t talking right now. A hook up at a mutual party here and there but it was never anything more… He missed the more. He needed someone to confide in about what was going on at home.

The whole Stella thing basically erased Hunter’s inclination to share things with his best friend. Not that he gave a damn about Stella- he never got along with her anyway. For whatever reason Matt loved Stella. It was disgusting for Hunter to see, especially knowing what had gone down between her and Marcel. Still, he gave his friend space to grieve from Stella’s disappearance rather than burdening Matt with his own issues.

So when he’d crashed into Ada, he dived deep into that relationship-- or lack of it. Ada didn’t talk much, and neither did Hunter. She was somebody that he could channel his anger into. His uncertainty with Jules, the difficulty it took to protect Matt feelings, and the rage burning through him about Marcel. There was no finesse or romance during the nights spent with Ada. Hunter was rough with her; maybe even mean, and just as wordless as their relations were, he disappeared without so much as a goodbye. Hunter needed something, and so did Ada. It was a symbiotic relationship with no clear end in sight.

He needed the outlet, but as rapidly as they fell into it, Ada had disappeared. Ghosted him. That was a couple weeks ago.

***

“I’m keeping it!”

The shouts of Hunter’s mother had woken him up before the alarm set on his iPhone. In spite of his party habits it was never difficult for Hunter to wake up in the morning. A strict exercise regimen did that. He made no effort to decipher whatever his parents were arguing about this time. Hunter simply put a windbreaker and joggers over his boxers, 50 Cent shouting in his ears as he jogged the neighbourhood. Once around. Then twice. Three. Four. Five.

Hunter did that. He got lost in his exercise. A mixture of excitement for school resuming, and a need to get away from his parents had allowed him to get lost in the ache of his thighs, and speedy beat in his chest.

Shit.” He cursed following a glance at his smart watch. 7:07.

He was quick to get inside and freshen up. Hunter left his room with his signature musk of Dior Homme lingering on his skin. The sound of a belt whipping through air caught Hunter off guard, followed by his mother’s screams once more. Dad wasn’t happy this morning.

His breath grew hot, brows furrowed, and fingers curled into a fist. Since his run and shower till now Harris Rhodes wasn’t finished? Enough was enough, and today Hunter was going to show his father. It took only a few long strides before Hunter stood face to face with the closed door of his parents room. Abruptly, the door swung open from the inside. Hunter’s father eyed him up and down before pushing past him, muttering under his breath as he did so.

He should have got him then. Clotheslined him and gave him a piece of his mind. Instead, Hunter was frozen in place until he heard the front door shut behind his dad. A look over to his teary mother revealed a woman hunched over on the floor, holding her stomach with what looked like a thermometer in her hand. A pregnancy test.

Putting two and two together wracked Hunter’s brain. Just what he thought was going on was hurting his head. His parents weren’t intimate at all and so if his mother was pregnant she’d be just as bad as Stella if not worse.

I’m going to school now.” He turned away without another word. Down the stairs, and into his jet black Jeep Wrangler.

Loud rap music carried Hunter to school. He’d started off humming quietly to the tunes of the songs, but by the time he was at BGHS he was headrocking and shouting to the lyrics too.

Hunter descended from the car and made his way to the school. In his hands sat two separate burritos that he’d picked up from the joint a couple blocks to the school. The sight of Matt and another kid Hunter didn’t quite recognize caused him to pique a brow as he neared.

Move.” Hunter growled at Kye, and handed one of the breakfast burritos to Matthew. Hunter threw his arm over Matthew’s shoulder. He gave Kye his iconic “beat it” stare, lips curled downwards at the other kid as he ushered Matthew inside.

Fucking dork.” He chuckled, when they were a ways ahead of Kye. He grinned back at Kye just for the added kicks. It felt good to be back at the school, under the pale lights of the hallways where he was treated like royalty. Feared like royalty.

Matthew did little to hide how uneasy he was feeling though. His breathing was audible and coarse… beads of sweat were forming over his forehead and he wasn’t greeting him as cheerily as he usually did. It only caused Hunter to frown. Why the fuck was Stella still bothering him? Knowing her she was probably running away from her parents-- probably to Canada or something. Fucking hoe.

You’re not gonna be like this all day, right?” Hunter said as he took a giant bite out of the burrito. “Look like you're about to fucking cry, bro.

What was he tellin’ you anyways?” Hunter added with another glance back at Kye, and a second bite out of the burrito. “Stella?”

Ginny Jovanovic
An alarm broke the peaceful silence, the sound obnoxious enough to make anyone turn it off immediately but the owner of the device didn’t make any effort to silence it. In fact, Ginevra had been up for the last two hours just staring blankly at the ceiling of her bedroom, trying to count all the colors that were present in the swirling sky. Her body felt numb and heavy against her mattress and she wondered if she had really painted her room over summer, Stella sitting in a chair complaining about the newest gossip floating around town. She couldn’t really shake the feeling that her bedroom no longer smelled like various florals and there were no longer heels strewn across the floor as her friend kicked them off before ultimately jumping onto the bed. It didn’t feel like she had just vanished, their last words being bitter and slurred as Ginevra ripped her arm out of Stella’s grasp, not wanting to be anywhere near the girl.

“Ginny! Will you turn off your alarm, please? You’re going to wake up the neighbors!” Her mother’s voice cut through the rather heavy atmosphere that had settled around the blonde and she sighed heavily. “GINEVRA!” That was her cue. Rolling over onto her side, she grabbed her phone and silenced the noise, her body screaming out in protest from the sudden movements. “Thank you! Breakfast is ready downstairs so hurry up” the sound of footsteps disappearing down the staircase was the only thing the girl could focus on as she laid limply in her new position, parts of her body in rather uncomfortable angles but it was too much effort to do anything about it. She didn’t know if she was brave enough to go to school without Stella. While they weren’t always on the best terms, she always could count on her when she needed her the most.

Whether that was holding her hair back while she emptied her body of her latest meal and beverage or helping her squeeze into some jeans, Stella was always there to help put the imperfections into a place where Ginny couldn’t find them. She missed that. Now she had to stare the ugliness in the face and deal with it alone, finding that her stomach wasn’t flat enough, her waist not small enough, it was all too much. Still, she could hear Stella in her head just telling her how dramatic she was being about the whole situation and how she needed to get out of bed and at least be there for Jules. It wasn’t something she wanted to do at all, in fact, she was content with staying in bed all day and sleeping, but she knew that she would never forgive herself if she wasn’t there for her friends when they were suffering as well. With a lot of effort, the petite blonde forced herself into a sitting position, her legs tingling from being asleep for the last twenty minutes.

Even so, she forced herself to wake her body up and walked across her bedroom floor to her closet, running her fingers across the various articles of clothing. She pulled out a cute dress that she had bought over the summer with Jules and Stella but for some reason, she told herself not to wear it. Instead, she settled for a plaid mini skirt and a cropped white cardigan. She grabbed a clean towel from her closet as well before she closed the doors and slowly made her way into the bathroom. Ginny knew that she had to look presentable so she forced herself to shower, shave, wash her hair twice, brush her teeth, wash her face, and rinse all evidence of her depressive state down the drain. Her blonde hair stuck to her body once she got out of the shower, lightly tanned skin looking rejuvenated despite the fact she still felt like shit. She rubbed her body down with the towel before she moisturized and gave herself a mental pep talk. She could get through the day. She could hang in there for Jules. She could handle Stella being gone.

Well, maybe the last bit was just wishful thinking. It helped a little though. The clothes soon were on her skin, the familiar feeling of lace and cotton reminding her that she was a popular girl and she had expectations to live up to. Grabbing a brush and hairdryer, she started to style her hair, ultimately pulling it back into a high ponytail, her long bangs falling around her doll-like face, making her seem much more innocent than anything you’d hear at school. While those rumors surrounding her did nothing but chip at the little bit of armor she wore, she knew it came with the territory. Shaking away the thoughts and concerns, Ginny grabbed her makeup bag and began to hide the imperfections, the stress, and the worry without a second thought. Her makeup was always simple, just enough to give some life to her skin and a bit of eyeliner and mascara to help her eyes look a bit more attractive.

When she wasn’t at school, she rarely wore makeup outside of lipgloss and mascara, she hated spending so much time on it but she wouldn’t dare go to that place without looking perfect. Smiling at her reflection, she made sure that it didn’t look fake and someone would believe her if she said that she was hanging in there. God was that a lie. “Ginny! Breakfast is getting cold! What are you doing in there? Making your makeup from scratch?” Her mother’s voice caused Ginny to yelp and practically jump out of her skin, not expecting her parents to be this determined to get her to eat.

“Sorry! I got an eyelash in my eye! I’m coming out now.” As quickly as she could, the short blonde cleaned up her bathroom counter and left the room, face to face with her mom. The woman smiled softly, her dirty blonde hair pulled up in a messy bun, glasses resting on her nose. She always looked so tired from the long shifts at the hospital but still managed to be so warm and loving whenever she saw Ginny or her husband. Her arm naturally wrapped around her daughter’s shoulders as she squeezed her into her side. “Were you guys waiting on me?”

“Of course honey, you know Dad, he won’t eat anything unless you’re at the table. He’s suuuuuch a gentleman.” The tone was teasing and soon enough Ginny’s mood felt just a bit better. They joked and talked as they made their way downstairs and into the kitchen, and her dad was quickly standing up with his arms crossed, obviously pretending to be annoyed. “Arthur you aren’t fooling anyone, we both know you aren’t annoyed.”

“Thanks for spoiling the fun Kenna, I really had her going!” With a dejected sigh, Ginny’s father sat back down, shortly followed by her mom as they had already dished up their breakfasts. Since both of them were high profile doctors, breakfast tended to be incredibly healthy. However, the mere thought of putting food into her mouth made the girl’s mouth feel dry and her stomach churn uncomfortably.

“Umm, I’m going to make a smoothie real quick. I think my ride will be here soon anyway so I’ll get food at school.” That was another lie.

“Okay honey! No worries. Is Leon picking you up today?” The question almost made Ginny drop the knife she was holding, not sure how to respond. It wasn’t exactly something she felt like talking about over the breakfast table.

“I doubt it, Mom. I mean we aren’t really that close you know. Plus I’m pretty sure Rowan is getting me.” Dismissing the question, she cut up fruits and vegetables before tossing them into the blender, eventually opening the fridge to grab some Greek yogurt and some ice from the freezer. Before anything else could be said, she slapped the lid on the blender and turned it on, allowing the loud noises to fill up the room so she could ignore her mother’s prodding. Leon was the last person Ginny wanted to be stuck in a car and it seemed that simply thinking about it was enough to send an unpleasant chill down her spine. The blonde wasted no time in dumping the purple smoothie into a Starbucks travel cup, making sure she had the right straw to go with it. “I’m going to clean up and leave because I’m running out of time!”

She was buzzing around the kitchen like a trapped bee, washing the blender and practically throwing everything back into the fridge. Once she was done she ran over to the table, planting kisses on each other her parents’ cheek, not wanting to hang around any longer. “Love you guys! I hope your shifts aren’t too bad!” Thankfully her backpack had been packed the night before by her mom and hung up by the door so she could just grab it after putting on her shoes. The door closing behind her allowed her to let out a soft sigh of relief, knowing damn well that she didn’t have a ride scheduled for the day. Stella usually was the one getting her, whether or not it was when she got a ride from Matt or was by herself. Ginny didn’t want to dwell on her old routine, plus she needed the exercise. She ate way too much the previous night so walking to school would do her good, she didn’t live that far away after all.

Putting her Airpods in, Ginny started playing her playlist as she walked down her driveway, taking a few sips of the smoothie as she did so. She just hoped that nobody would really pay attention to her lack of energy once she got to school.

Marcel had roused awake sometime between Ada covering him back up, following her escape, and hearing her get ready ahead of him. But he wasn’t prepared to get up yet; it was peaceful laying in bed with the sheets tangled around his legs and comforter slipping down along his chest as he turned to lay on his back, sprawled out like he owned the furniture he rested upon.

The sun filtering in between the gaps in the blinds felt good on his bare chest, the golden rays sparkling against the melanated skin they had deepened over the summer.

The summer…

The summer before senior year was nothing like the movies made it out to be. There was no cross country road trip, no trip to an exotic resort, no bonfires, no camping, nothing worth remembering like that. Instead, Marcel’s summer would be memorable for all the wrong reasons, and it all stemmed from a dumb party that ruined friendships, stirred up stupid rumors, and more importantly, had brought to whatever it was he had with Ada. It was no wonder that the rest of the summer was spent in a rinse and repeat cycle of working too hard in the gym and spending the restless night tossing and turning in bed, reliving the regretful things he had said to Ada the night they “broke up.” Marcel was suffering, slowly spiraling out of control and losing himself, at least until an old flame came crash landing into his life one hot, July evening. Esther reminded him of a lot of things. Still, most importantly, of a time when all this pain and uncertainty didn't exist, when they’d run around the town without a care for the world, just some dumb kids reminding all the miserable adults there was more to life than suffering.

It was like breathing the first time after having his head held underwater, and for that, he’d always be thankful for Esther coming back—despite the circumstances and consequences that would come from their two part summer ‘love’ story. Just as a fire eventually burned out, so did their intimacy, an ephemeral glance into what could have been, had either of their cards been played differently. That thought was saved for another life.

All it took was an instant last night, and his decision was made for him as he gazed upon the girl that had been absent from his summer and the cause of his inner turmoil. Just a second of looking at her in this state, arms hugging herself tightly to keep the fractured pieces of her in place while she waited for him. Marcel had never hugged her so tightly, and the intention to never let her go hadn’t lessened in his heart even as his eyes slowly opened to see her smiling face inches from his own. The warmth of her kisses on his skin lingered as those green gems twinkled in the light of the morning sun.

“Beautiful…” he muttered, his tone coarse with morning grogginess but as sure as his beating heart. Those strong arms of his wrapped Ada into a warm embrace, paying no mind to the wrinkles he pressed into her clothes, only caring about preserving this moment for as long as he was able to.

“Potrei guardarti tutto il giorno… have I died and gone to heaven in my dreams?” He asked seriously, though his boyish grin gave way to the light-hearted atmosphere between them. A moment longer with his angelietto in his arms seemed adequate enough before he released her, though not without stealing a brief kiss from her pretty lips and maneuvering expertly out of her bed. His muscles ached from the overwork they had endured the past week, but he fought through it if only to maintain the image of strength for those that relied on him.

Marcel paused in the doorway of the bathroom, looking over his shoulder again as if to double-check Adalezya would still be there, sitting pretty on her bed— and there she was, green eyes meeting his once again, “I’ll be quick, so we can grab some coffee on the way in, I think I left my keys on the kitchen counter if you wanna warm up the car, I’ll be down like 10 minutes tops.” He sent a playful wink and turned around to enter the bathroom and sell his soul to the god of hot water that soothed the pains of his achy muscles and renewed his lease on life, or something like that.

Esther woke up to the screaming of her alarm. Groaning, she turned it off, tossing her phone off her bed. To say she was mildly unenthused about being up this early would be an understatement. She hated waking before 10 a.m., and it was currently three hours before that. Sitting up, Esty cleaned the gunk out of her eyes. It made her want to fall back asleep, just those few moments of having her eyes closed. Whose idea was it to stay up to 3 am and organize her shoes? Oh right, hers. Nerves had kept her up all night, but the line she did at midnight certainly didn't help. Looking over at the mirror sitting on her lingerie drawer, she grabbed the metal cylinder with a single jewel at its top that she was notorious for. In a few sniffs, she was ready to face Marcel and Ada and everyone else who dared piss her off today.

There was something shameful about Electra finally attending a normal school. She was used to just doing online school and conversing with tutors on set. Would she be able to succeed in this new environment? Well people as stupid as Toby and Koren sure managed it. There's nothing stopping her.

~***~

Or so she thought. Entering the school, Esty played with the ends of her hair nervously. She had done everything to manicure herself to a T. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail, with the ends curled. Her nails were perfect with the acrylic polish matching the exact lavender of her animal print dress. All she wanted to do was make a good impression, though for who Esther didn't know. Perhaps all she needed was to blend in a little? The trouble was that Esther didn't want to blend in. She was Electra, and she still could be Electra if she got her life together. Though, there was a fat chance of that happening given her appointment with a pregnancy test after school and the early morning appointment she had with her little white lines. Even then, she was deserving of some sort of respect for who she is. Plenty of stars, particularly male ones, got to do the same thing she does. It's pretty unfair that she has to hide away and attend some new school for doing such a common thing in the world of Hollywood.

Her boots clicked and clacked against the linoleum. She was just trying to get from point A to point B without running into anyone that remind her of the terrible decisions she's made. At least not anyone who'd laugh at her for having absolutely no idea where she was going. In one hand, Esther held her class schedule. She just needed to get to her English class. Though the numbers made no sense, and she didn't want to ask anyone. Instead, she mosied around the school, hoping to figure it out by trial by fire.

It occurred to Esther that most people would be mourning Stella today, including Jules. She found it hard to feel the same type of sympathy for the girl's fate. It wasn't that she hated Stella, though she certainly didn't like the girl who dated Matt and who was Jules' best friend when she was away. In a lot of ways, she was admittedly jealous of the girl. It only made her more nervous about the day, knowing full well that so many people would be more focused on Stella than a starlet's arrival to BGHS. Not that Esther had to be the center of attention, but she needed to be the center of attention.

Finally, she found herself in some sort of direction. Except she only ended up at the entrance to the school. The relief on her face upon seeing Hunter was unmatched by any other. At least now Esty had someone she could rely on to get some sort of direction around this place. The only dilemma was he was with Matt, who was the last person she should be seeing right now. He certainly didn't look right, either. Yet, Electra had things to do and places to be. Ultimately, she opted to wait until the boys were in closer proximity to make herself known.

Astraia spent forty-five minutes of her morning sitting at her vanity, scrolling through the backlog of Snapchats and DMs she had ignored over the summer. The Snaps from a certain pretty boy had brought a small grin to her face only for it to get wiped away as soon as she logged into Instagram. She scrolled through the messages sent to her by old friends and acquaintances trying to curry favor with her by keeping her updated on all the gossip surrounding BGHS. Greaaat.

Astraia had cut ties with the “friends” that failed to pass the vibe check just before the end of the school year for “health reasons”. From whence they came not to be heard from again, or at least that’s how it should have been. But it seems the instructions weren’t clear enough, but at least they offered something entertaining. For a second, Yessi thought about not opening the DMs; most of it would undoubtedly be bullshit but what if something particularly juicy was at her fingertips?

“un poco de chisme, won’t hurt…” she mused as she clicked through the handful of gossip girl worthy messages. Most of them were pretty impressive, the end of the year party, Mars and Stella hooking up— “pfft.. yeah right, that bitch wishes.” Stella’s disappearance, “no mames, esa perra huyó, verdad?” Yessi wasn’t significantly cut up by Stella’s disappearance, nor surprised really; the girl made a lot of selfish decisions and was generally terrible to everyone, so really it was a matter of time all that caught up to her. In light of learning about her disappearance, Yessi’s mind went to Baz, who she hadn’t spoken to all summer, and Matt, who she hadn’t spoken to since he started dating Stella. Yessi made a mental note to seek them out later in the day, at least to let them know they weren’t alone but hopefully to offer help while they were hurting.

The final message was one Yessi regretted opening as soon as she read the opening line.

𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚒𝚍𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝚋𝚘𝚢 𝚝𝚘𝚢 𝚘𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚑𝚞𝚗𝚝 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚊 𝚂𝚝𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚊 𝟹.𝟶 𝚊𝚕𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚢?

Yessi made it only half-way through the wall of text before slamming her phone down on the top of her vanity. The sound echoed in the otherwise silent hom and was apparently enough to startle her aunt.

“Yessi, Stai bene?” concern accompanied a couple of soft knocks against her closed door.

“Yes, just getting ready!” Yessi called back after taking a deep breath and standing from her seated position.

“okay, don’t be late, Estrellita” Bianca tried her best to sound stern but it sounded odd coming from someone who had always been soft and unassuming. After a beat Bianca shuffled away and Astraia let out an annoyed grumble as her lithe fingers carded through her sun-kissed tresses, shaking at the roots a bit aggressively.

Now, what to wear to remind everyone she was that bitch?

———————

Yessi crossed through town and entered the Benton Grove neighborhood in record time. With irritation weighing her foot down on the gas and luck bringing her green light after green light her mood wasn’t as bad as it was when she entered the black ‘19 BMW M8.

But as she pulled into the familiar driveway of her bestie’s house she wasn’t exactly in the right mood to receive the southern hospitality his family always graced her with. So she opted for parking at the entrance of the long driveway and texting him, manners be damned.

Amelia should've been used to first day jitters by now. She'd had plenty of practice, after all, but it never seemed to matter. New town, new faces, new school, new job—it was the same every time, but it always took Amie by surprise. She was tired of having to make first impressions. Maybe it was just her imagination, but it felt as though her personality changed with each move, too—got watered down bit by bit with every introduction she made—and maybe that was just her brain's way of adapting. If she didn't let them see too much of herself, maybe she wouldn't get attached. It'd be easier to say goodbye, as she would inevitably have to, when it was all said and done with.

That didn't mean she couldn't have a little fun, though, for the sake of keeping things interesting for herself. She'd moved so many times by now that if she didn't change it up every once in a while, she didn't trust herself to not spiral.

Amie had seriously considered cutting off her hair and dying it blue, but her parents had been quick to remind her that, with her internship at the hospital, that wouldn't blow over well, so, she'd decided on a fake American accent. She'd traveled to enough places by now that she had a number of well-learned accents at her disposal, but an American accent was the only one that wouldn't turn heads. She was no stranger to the way that American teenagers liked to mock English accents, and the last thing she wanted was to become a laughing stock. She'd already done a bit of internet stalking—these kids were ruthless, so she knew that if they found any sort of flaw with her, she'd be a goner, and since she didn't know how long it'd be before her parents packed the family up again, that wasn't a risk she was willing to take. If nothing else, it'd be a sort of game for her, something to occupy her mind other than the stress she was already feeling.

That very same stress was evident in her face. As Amie gazed at her reflection in the mirror, she realized the dark circles under her eyes made her look old and tired. Then again, she was tired, and that made her feel old. The Harrison family had only been in Benton Grove for a week, but already, her internship was proving itself to be more than she'd signed up for. She was supposed to be learning to be a doctor, not making coffee runs and doing paperwork, yet, here she was, and it was exhausting. Nothing a little concealer can't fix.

As Amie was blow drying her hair, her eyes scanned her bedroom absentmindedly, happening by chance to land on the clock that sat on her nightstand. "Shit," she muttered, the hair dryer's motor cutting off as she hastily let it fall to the countertop. She was nowhere near being late, but Amie had learned over the years that being on time often turned into being late. She didn't know the layout of the town well enough yet, not to mention the high school's, and she was in no mood to spend her morning wandering aimlessly.

Amie grabbed her white-and-orange racing jacket from the foot of her bed and stuffed her feet into her white sneakers as she ran into the kitchen. Her parents were already gone, but there was a bowl of fruit on the dining room table. She snagged a banana, followed by her house key, and headed out the door.

She took the apartment building's elevator down to the ground floor—since Amie didn't have a car, she wanted to save her energy for the walk to school, not waste it all sprinting down three flights of stairs. As Amelia emerged into the sunlight, she squinted, looking around as she took a bite of the banana in her hand. A part of her was still half-asleep, and she felt turned around. Somewhere, in the back of her mind, she knew the direction of the school, but her body was telling her to march back upstairs and crawl into bed—she could be the new kid another day, but what she needed now was sleep.

No, Amie told herself, being lazy never got anyone anywhere in life.

A blonde girl that looked to be Amie's age, give or take, passed by on the sidewalk, carrying some sort of drink that would've made Amelia turn up her nose if it was hers to have to consume. She didn't recognize the girl from her social media stalking, but then again, there were so many blonde girls in Benton Grove that they all sort of ran together. Either way, she seemed nice enough, so Amie jogged to catch up with her. "Do you know where the high school is?"

Damn it. I forgot the accent.

Amie cringed, bracing herself for a tidal wave of questions.

Zosia Miracle
The fabric clung to her skin as she rolled over onto her back, eyes glassy and unfocused, lips parted in a silent sigh of approval. Her mind was filled with haze but she could distinctly recall the sound of a deep Australian accent, soft smiles, the occasional warmth of his fingers as they passed the joint between each other, it was all fuzzy but it was there. She could feel his name on her lips as she proudly showed him the slightly crooked finger she now was stuck with due to one very eventful party. She was so close to calling out to him, so close to spilling it all, but she held her tongue and soon enough the door was flung open and left her feeling rather startled.

Zosia was incredibly out of it when Milo walked into her room, arms crossed in annoyance as he stared down at her petite frame. The girl had somehow managed to roll out of her bed and onto the floor, her limbs spread out as she probably tried to ground herself due to the drug-induced dreams. “Heyyyyyyyyyy Milooo” the words felt foreign on her tongue as she grinned up at him, obviously hungover as hell from her exciting night. She had been met with an ultimatum before she had crash-landed on Milo’s doorstep, clearly already starting her high, and she was not dealing with it well. Her father knew that his daughter was hanging out with other boys than the strange one that wore skirts, and he threatened to send her to a different school that would keep her on the right path if she didn’t stay on it herself.

In other words, if Zosia strayed from the path her parents had laid out for her, she would be sent to a church camp and have every rebellious bone in her body beaten out of her. It was a lot for the girl, especially since she was so close to tasting freedom, she couldn’t get shackled down now. So naturally, she turned to drugs, enjoying the joint as she made her way to Milo’s no longer even caring if someone saw the trail of smoke as she walked down the street. Out of respect for her best friend’s parents, she let herself in through the window of Milo’s bedroom, not even bothering to give him a heads up before she crawled onto his bed and shook him awake. They had stayed up for a few hours passing the joint back and forth, trying to make sense of her family situation. When it was clear they were getting nowhere, he went to bed but she stayed up, forcing her mind to become one large blur, to the point that she felt like her bed was a cloud and she was able to just float away from all her problems.

But the look on Milo’s face and the feeling of the carpet beneath her body confirmed that she wasn’t floating away at all, she was crashlanding, forced to stay on Earth and deal with all her shitty situations alone. “Zo you need to get dressed. You’re starting to smell like Baz” he sighed heavily as he tossed a clean towel onto her body and ran a hand back through his hair. “Mom and Dad made breakfast if you’re hungry so just come to the kitchen whenever you’re ready” Milo didn’t have much bedside manner, especially when it came to Zosia. Most likely it was because she often showed up out of the blue completely stoned out of her mind and needed help staying out of trouble and possibly ODing. It was a thought that had previously occurred to her but she never talked about it. What was the point? Now Milo knew how to deal with her and no longer found himself being too concerned unless she was genuinely having problems he could help with.

A lazy grin played on her lips as she forced herself to sit up, only laughing slightly as her room seemed to spin a bit, clearly her brain clinging to the side effects of her high. Oh well, it would make school more interesting. “You can go, I’m up okaaaay. I don’t need a babysitter.” Zosia waved Milo off and rested her head on her knees, trying to make herself up before she had to actually get on her feet. The last time she had gone straight into standing up she had fallen over and almost cracked her head open on the dresser. So she waited until she felt grounded enough to pull herself off of the floor and onto her fuzzy sock-covered feet. It felt odd but she knew she had to become a person and go to school. She had friends she needed to see and honestly, she wanted to make sure that Milo could arrive at school without his ass getting beaten. Still, dragging herself into the bathroom and having to peel the clothes off her sweat-covered frame was less than ideal.

But as the scorching water ran down her body and cleansed her of her high, she couldn’t help but feel incredibly unmotivated. I mean, if she already bathed and got ready for the day, did she really have to exert all that extra energy and attend school? Well, she knew that she had to or else Milo would have her head on a plate, but it didn’t make it any easier. She still didn’t know how to face the school, knowing that rumors were floating around town already and it was only a matter of time before someone approached her at school asking if it was true that she lost her v-card. “Why is losing your virginity such a big deal at this school. I’m surprised nobody has offered to pay me yet” Zosia’s shower thoughts were often said outloud and were usually very awkward for someone to hear if they accidentally walked in to ask her something. However, nobody was present in the bathroom other than her so she was saved the embarrassment of explaining what she was even going on about.

Turning the water off, the girl got out of the shower and grabbed her black towel to dry off, making sure to wrap it around her hair so she could get ready without water running down her back and chest the entire time. She didn’t do anything too crazy outfit or makeup-wise, but she did try to look somewhat nice. While she refused to ever admit it, there was at least one person that she wanted to impress when she went to school. Though she doubted he saw her as a girl, let alone more than a friend. Shaking those thoughts away, she pulled the towel off her hair and dropped it on the floor, not caring that it was in a pile and wouldn’t dry. She ran a brush through her damp black hair before she grabbed the blowdryer, allowing it to fluff up and curl slightly as it framed her soft features. She pulled a section back into a ponytail and made sure to style her bangs so they properly covered her forehead.

Blonde peaked out from underneath the black and she scrunched up her nose at it, knowing that she’d have to bleach it again soon. “Oh well, that’s a problem future Zo has to deal with.” She barely remembered to slip on her shirt before she left her bedroom and headed towards the kitchen, bidding the Beckett’s good morning as she grabbed herself a breakfast wrap from Milo’s plate. “You ready to go?” Her tone was pretty chipper and bright despite the fact she was seriously dreading stepping foot on the campus. Maybe church camp wouldn’t be that bad, after all, a virgin wouldn’t be that out of place there… right?

For the first time in forever, Cade’s summer hadn’t been complete shit. How ironic. While everyone in town was busy being miserable, he’d been as close to happy as he’d been in...well in forever, really.

Honestly? Cade couldn’t have cared less about Stella’s disappearance. She’d been the most righteous of all Benton Grove bitches royalty. But...she’d been Baz’s bestfriend, his cousin. Did it make him a bad friend for not caring? He didn’t really want to know the answer.

He was still getting used to it—caring about people, about what they thought about him. While currently it was limited to three people, that was still three more than he’d had a year ago. Milo, Zosia and Baz, unbeknownst to them, had saved Cade from himself more times than he could count. What a blessing they had been.

He’d spent the majority of the summer running around the town, hand in hand with Zos, going all the places he hadn’t cared to go before. The bowling alley, frozen yogurt shop, the thrift store with cool vintage clothing (that she’d end up stealing from him anyways), the roller skating rink. They weren’t dates—as much as he’d like them to have been—but they were close enough. Somewhere during those three, long, hot months, Cade Jarvis—who catches feelings for no one—had caught more than his fair share for the dark haired bombshell who’d brightened up his life.

He’d never tell her that, of course. If he did she’d likely never speak to him again. How could anyone ever return actual feelings for the rich Australian asshole who stayed holed up in his house more than any person should? So he’d vibe loudly, but suffer in silence. That was his motto. Sort of.

The only downfall to the summer? The absence of Baz, his best friend, husband and cuddle buddy. After Stella disappeared, his weed-loving friend had locked himself in his house and refused to come out, even going so far as to send Cade away when he’d tried to go over. He missed the shorter boy more than he cared to admit these last few weeks, and hoped he’d be at school today.

Speaking of school...he was late. Or close to it, at least. Cade sat up in bed, frowning as his (excessive amount of) blankets slid down his bare chest, leaving his skin exposed to the freezing air of his bedroom. Living in an ancient stone mansion had its downfalls, its drafty rooms and lack of a heating system being one of them. Usually he lit the circle fireplace in the center of his room before he went to bed, but he’d forgotten to last night, too tired (and admittedly very high) to care.

Despite the exhaustion that lay heavy on him like a wet blanket, Cade hadn’t gotten much sleep, and instead had spent the night staring at the ceiling and listening to music, lost in thought. It was pathetic, but the only time he ever got enough sleep was when Zo or Baz stayed the night. Stretching, he stood, waiting for the dizziness and loss of vision that happened every time he stood too fast to subside. Add an iron deficiency to the (many) ways God—if one even existed—had screwed him over.

Blinking blearily at the digital clock on his desk, a low groan slipped from Cade’s mouth. 7:25. He was really late. First period started in five minutes. Way to start off his senior year. Grumbling under his breath, he dug through his drawers, tugging out the first shirt and pair of pants his hands came in contact with, throwing them on without bothering to look in the mirror, before shoving his feet into a pair of black sneakers.

He ducked unto the bathroom to brush his teeth, not bothering to fix his hair before ducking back out, grabbing his keys and tromping down the stairs, not bothering to be quiet. Cade couldn’t care less about waking his mother up. The bitch probably wasn’t even home, anyways. Most likely she was passed out in some corner of the town, too drugged up and hungover to have bothered coming home.

Cade was shocked, however, to see her standing by the door, applying makeup while looking in the mirror they kept just inside the entrance to the house. He froze at the bottom of the stairs, muscles tensing as he waited for her to notice him. Her grey eyes met his in the mirror, twins to his own, and he was unable to keep himself from looking quickly down, at the ground.

“It’s the first day of school, isn’t it?” she asked, voice amused. It was a simple question, and had anyone else asked he would have no issue answering, but with his mother there was always some...aggression, behind the words.

Cade looked back up, keeping his gaze firmly on the space just above her head. “Yeah. I’m late,” he muttered, shoving his hands into the pockets of his black sweatpants. Despite what he’d just said, he remained rooted in his spot by the stairs as if frozen in place.

“You look like shit,” she added, turning to face him after shoving the tube of lipstick into her purse. It always amazed him that she was still beautiful despite the drugs and drinking. Cade knee he looked like shit. He felt like shit, too, but he didn’t bother telling her that. She wouldn’t have cared, anyways.

“No, seriously,” Eloise continued, smirking. “You have bags under your eyes deeper than my Kate Spade purse.” His mother let out a chuckle. She found delight in his misery, didn’t she. Cade didn’t blame her—he was the reason that his father left in the first place. So he stood, blinking, waiting for her to finish so he could leave, hoping it wouldn’t be too much longer.

She made a show of looking him up and down, before crossing her arms smugly over her chest. “Are you going to eat, before you leave? Wait, don’t answer that. You’ll just throw it all up anyways. Your father really gave you the shit end of the stick where genes are concerned,” she sneered, before striding off into the kitchen. Thank fucking God that was over.

Cade was finally able to move from his spot by the stairs, and strode out the door, closing it swiftly behind him. He hadn’t realized how tightly he’d been clutching his keys, and he relaxed his hand a bit, studying the grooves that now marred his skin. The ride to school was quick, especially in his mustang, and it gave him time to empty his mind of any distracting thoughts.

When he pulled in, the parking lot was full of cars and devoid of people, which wasn’t surprising considering that first period had begun half an hour before. There was no point in going now, anyways. Besides, chemistry really wasn’t that important. As Cade saw it, school in general wasn’t that important. He’d learned everything he needed to know and more when he was in elementary school.

Cade stepped out of his car, slamming the door shut behind him, before striding off towards the football field and the bleachers. It was as good a place as any to spend the remainder of the period, he supposed. When he saw a familiar head of dark hair slouched on one of the bleachers, a small smile graced his features. “Bazzy!” he called, stepping down the metal stairs until he got to the row his best friend was siting in. Sliding onto the bench besides the stoner, Cade threw his arm lazily around the shorter boy’s shoulders, poking Baz’s cheek with his free hand.

“I missed you, you twat,” Cade chirped, not mentioning the fact that Baz looked worse than he did. Losing someone close to you would do that to you, he supposed. Withdrawing his arm, Cade took a moment to study Baz, frowning. “Seriously, mate, are you alright?” he asked, before sighing and shaking his head.

“Okay, that was a stupid question. I’m sorry,” Cade amended, stuffing his hands into his pockets. He was still getting used to being someone’s friend, to asking all the right questions and giving all the proper responses. “I’m sorry,” he apologized again, frown growing. “You know I’m useless at this stuff.”

Jinx Vandermeer

I want another life, I want another chance
I want another life, I wanna try again...

No...no, no, no. You can't wear a crop top to school.

Jinx scowled at the image in her bedroom mirror, black jeans clinging to her tiny hips, a strip of pale midriff on display. What made her choose this over the usual fitted but modest t-shirt or slouchy sweater, Jinx hadn't a clue.

Why not? Milo wears crops all the time. So do half the girls at school.

...Yeah, but they actually look good in them. They don't have the body of a 7-year-old boy
, she thought, frowning at her waifish figure in the mirror.

Jinx grabbed at her phone, then quickly put it back down with an exasperated sigh. She'd already texted Milo when she woke up, so she couldn't do it again before she even showed up at school. She didn't want to seem clingy. Okay...clingier. Jinx instead promised herself she'd hurry up and get ready quickly, so she could see Milo at school. She knew a hug from her sweet prince was sure to lift her spirits, and found herself smiling just picturing his delicately handsome features and pale blue-green eyes, rare and precious as the finest aquamarine.

With this new resolve, Jinx made quick work of getting ready. She threw a choker on, along with her usual makeup, taking the time to meticulously paint her neat black eyeliner on. She powdered her pert nose and dried her damp hair, freshly dyed a dusty, pastel pink. After scampering downstairs, she wolfed down a quick bowl of cereal while watching her little cream-colored fluffball, Marcia, sniff around the backyard. Jinx had never been so grateful of her father's penchant for heading out early in the morning to oversee his construction jobs, as she was spared the disapproving looks on her choice of school attire for the day. Once Marcia was fed and settled in her plush dog bed, Jinx grabbed her messenger bag, stuffing a black hoodie inside. Finally, she slipped on her black Converse and scuttled out the door, sighing at the arduous three-block journey ahead of her.

Scowling the whole way, the pink-haired girl absently fussed with her flimsy little t-shirt every few feet, as if it might magically grow a couple inches in length if she tugged hard enough. She didn't even want to think about what might lie ahead on this first day of school, how things were bound to be weird and different after the whole Stella thing had gone down.

To keep anxiety at bay, Jinx did what she always found most comfortable -- wallow in self pity. Better to reflect on how much she hated walking to school, alone with nowhere to hide on the sidewalk, left in the dust by all the cool kids passing by in their very own cars. Probably all rich pricks like Hunter and Cade, handed some spectacular set of wheels on their sixteenth birthday. Yes, better to daydream about the murdered-out sports car Jinx would've chosen if she'd been born a rich prick; a sleek, sexy thing with an elegantly ominous, matte black paint job.

Jinx's heart fluttered as she spotted Beaux ambling through the student parking, giving her top one more quick yank down before picking up speed to jog over. Despite how razor sharp and perceptive she knew her friend to be, she still hoped in vain that he wouldn't notice what she was wearing -- nevermind the fact that she'd be all too happy to tease him mercilessly if the tables were turned and he showed up to school in something out of the ordinary.

"Hey, loser!" She chirped, giving Beaux a playful shove in the arm upon catching up with him. He looked hot, as always, with his effortlessly cool punk look and messy hair. And as always, Jinx tried her best to appear casual, careful not to let her attraction show too much, though the faint pink blush glowing on her cheeks betrayed her a bit.

Feeling a punch in his shoulder, Beaux looked over to see Jinx. He smiled immediately, lighting up at seeing one of his closest friends. Briefly, he looked at the peak of flesh that her crop top allowed. He felt is face heat up a little, given he already liked Jinx far more than he was willing to admit (though perhaps his blush admitted that all on its own). He turned his head towards her, happy to have someone who made the day brighter. Wrapping an arm around her shoulder, he rolled his eyes at her words.

"Hey, silly goose."
Beaux smirked at Jinx, knowing it was a stupid nickname she'd probably hate.
"How're you doin' today?"

His backpack laid heavy on his shoulder. It was business as usual, but it wasn't. There was someone missing from school, someone everyone missed. Sure, it wasn't someone he missed, necessarily. Beauxchamp didn't want Stella to die, by any means, but it wasn't exactly like being in the same English class made them best friends. At least Jinx and her weren't close, otherwise, he'd probably have to be a far more comforting friend. Hell, she might've been one of the kids who thinks he had something to do with Stella's disappearance.

Walking into the school, he removed his arm from around Jinx and opened the door for her. His bracelets jangled together, making for a little cowbell that kept track of all his movements. However, these bracelets had little spikes on them and beads. Beaux followed Jinx in, hoping to avoid anyone who might want to punch him in the face.

t.n.t. (ac/dc cover)

Silence greeted Kore as she squinted up into the eeriness of the early morning. Another day gone by and no parents to show for it. Might as well be an orphan at this point. She thinks grimly to herself before she's rolling out of bed with a stretch and a pop, finger fumbling the bed sheets for her phone. Once she found what she was looking for she tapped the screen, with too much force than necessary, and took in the time displayed there.
'Three hours is better than none...'
she sighed aloud taking a second longer than needed to stare deeply at the phone's wallpaper. A selfie, of course, of the entire squad taken a few weekends ago when there was a rare moment of pure sunshine dancing through them, nothing seemed wrong. Nothing seemed... unusual. It was spur of the moment and they sure made the most out of it. Half lidded eyes scanned the faces of her best friends, stroking the screen lightly of each of them before an exceptionally loud siren broke her from her reverie. Flashing across the screen was her alarm. Of course she woke up before it. Signalling her to get up and complete her morning rituals before heading out and facing the day.

Hour an a half later, would have been sooner had she not found herself zoning out as the scalding water cascaded down her back for what seemed like only a few minutes, and Kore was dressed and prepping her meal shake in the stillness of her "family" home.
'Not much of a family,'
the bitter thoughts flit through her mind, tapping away at a text to her brother in another timezone before slipping the mobile device into the pocket of denim jacket. The amber container beside her bag calling to her. Only half filled with the blush pink circular pills stamped 40 she pulled one out before crushing it and dumping the powder into her tumbler. Dusting her hands off and fixing the high pony through her black cap the blonde swiped her murky green tumbler and messenger bag from the counter before she was out the door; locking it behind her.

A new and unique voice pulled Kore from her mindless thoughts and halted her from getting settled with the tunes that called out for her attention. Upon turning to the latest distraction Kore found herself met with a gorgeous set of pale blues she nearly missed the girl's question. Shaking herself coherent she flashed the brunette a dazzling grin,
"Howzit goin'! Oh BG? Yeh, I'm just on my way there now,"
tossing a thumb in the direction they were both headed as if the campus were right there beyond the parked cars and street signs. Just over the horizon.
"C'mon let's walk t'gether,"
the Australian native didn't even give her a chance to reply before she was nudging her slightly forward and continued on her way, mouth running a million miles an hour.

"Gotta be new to the area. English, yeh? Welcome welcome!"
With energy that seemed unlimited Kore began to question her new companion. Talking her ears off about the campus and the types of people she was down to run into throughout her stay. Finally taking a break in her ever consistent stream of words, Kore took a break to chug the remaining bit of her tumbler, emptying it one go. Letting out a satisfied sigh she wiped her lips with the back of her hand.

Hazel eyes sparkled in the light of rising sun as the two of them breached the threshold of the campus grounds. Soon the place will be running wild with students and staff alike. For now, the population seemed steady. Nothing too crazy going on. People gathered around, chatting each other up before the bell would inevitably screech for them to disperse. For now, it was easy street. Just time to get bearings down. Vibe. Almost as if a shock were admintered to her spine, Koren jumped up and turned back towards her new friend, beaming excitedly with a a curl to her lips
"Oi mate. Didn't introduce myself. 'm Kore. S'nice to meet ya."
