Graded [Kruhrin Village][Ciu'nan]Orson's Feast III

Kruhrin is a town carved into the top of the foothills on the Ryke-East Empire border. The town is comprised of three semicircular terraces, each standing about 24 feet high, wrapped around a central plaza where the main entrance is located. The main road leading up through the terraces cuts off a wedge of land equal to a fourth of the town on the northern side. This land is mostly forested and sloping, with a windmill at its foot and a small shelf at the top used as a sort of campground. The natural peak of the foothill remains intact save for a natural split where the main road passes through to the meadow beyond.

The plaza, aka the first terrace, is the lowest point of Kruhrin and acts as the tourist level. There is a singular expansive tavern as well as shops that non-locals would find helpful during their stay. Many celebrations and feasts are held in the plaza. The buildings on this terrace are a mix of one and two story structures, with the two story buildings being shops with an upstairs living space for the owner.

The second terrace is the residential area. All structures on this level are homes for the citizens of Kruhrin. As such, it's not uncommon to see buildings reach three stories. Also on this terrace, on an isolated rise just above the tavern, is the windmill, the only four story structure in Kruhrin.

The third terrace holds the town hall and acts as the administration level. The three members of the council live in the town hall. Next to it is the barracks of Kruhrin, which is a building shared by the guards and hunters of Kruhrin, who are often both hunter and guard. Next to the barracks is a slaughterhouse where the usable goods are extracted from the carcasses. The edible portions are sold to the tavern, while refinable parts like the pelt and bones are sold as-is.

Behind the town, a vast meadow sprawls across the rolling hills, interrupted periodically by ravines and clifffaces as the mountain range climbs higher. Nestled into the landscape a couple miles from town is an amphitheater where various contests are held, primarily the contests that take place during Orson's Feast. Not far from amphitheater, a rocky formation can be seen where two colossal bear statues guard the way to the monastery of Kruhrin.

After the moment had passed, Daichi stood to watch the elder bearkin walk away, turning out of sight down the terrace that led to the town hall. He nodded in response to Hathaway's question.

"That's the head monk of the monastery behind Kruhrin. All of our guards and hunters, as well as Misha and Jia of the council, have received training from him or his students. He doesn't come to town...well, ever really." Daichi hesitated then motioned for Hathaway to follow him as he took off after the head monk. "Come on, Hathaway! Let's see what he's doing here. With any luck, you'll get something even better than my training!"

Ciu'nan cocked her head to the side at Levia's return compliment.

"Bad...ass...? What does that mean? It sounds like it would be, well, bad." Ciu'nan said confused. Levia's smile made it seem like a well-meaning compliment but the words themselves sounded malicious. After her earlier conversation with Anasi, Ciu'nan couldn't be sure of others' intentions. "In any case, I'm just here to make sure this one"--Ciu'nan softly sets a hand on top of Crymaria's head, rubbing side to side--"doesn't get into trouble. In all honesty, she's the brains here. I'm just a supporting character." Ciu'nan retracted her hand as Crymaria laid out her findings. The fae ran her fingers through her long mane as she thought about things. "Wow...a secret lover and an artist quarrel. Maybe the woman told Karsh to commit this crime? There were plenty of those carving tools on the cart back in the meadow."

Ciu'nan paced a little before noticing the nun and the witch again. She raised her hand in a motionless wave to them. "Oh, right, I'm Ciu'nan by the way. Nice to meet you two. Say," Her fingers curled in towards her palm, leaving the index extended as it lowered to point at Joanne, "there are several churches around Ryke. Which church do you serve exactly?"

Eventually, it was time to make a decision on where to go next. Ciu'nan would turn to Crymaria once more. "Where do you think the clues are telling us to go next? The tavern keeper might know more about that wine crate. Levia and Sister Joanne think we should look in the caves. I guess I should also mention that there was a bearkin monk heading to the town hall a short while ago. May or may not be related."

Testing the door, it was unlocked. Inside, a bed was immediately to the right. The back end was raised with a tall crate standing in its center. Several bags lined the wall opposite the door. Some had been opened, showing articles of clothing within. A table with various carving implements lay to the left of the entrance. A crate filled with empty wine bottles was left on the desk. The crate could hold nine bottles, but only eight were in the crate.

Levia watched in awe as Ciu’nan got all confused over the word ‘badass’. Ah… of course, there was no way a tribeswoman would come to know of such a modern term. “It means cool.” Levia whispered to her. Hearing Ciu'nan's comment that she was just a supporting character, Levia would shake her head. "No way, you're definitely a main character to me!"

As Crymaria was giving her report of the situation, Levia’s eyes lit up when she heard about the hidden bag of extra Rykes. So he DID have money to spare after all! However, she wouldn’t voice her thoughts out as the others still seemed to think of her as a thief, although that was just untrue. She hasn’t even stolen anything yet!

Ciu’nan seemed to have come to the same conclusion as Levia, hearing what Crymaria had to say. There was probably a third party involved. Whoever who had sent the love letter could have been the one who persuaded this fellow into doing her dirty work. And the missing wine... Maybe he was drunk at the point of time? However all of this was merely speculation; the girl had just got here and was still piecing things together in her head.

“Now this is getting interesting.” Levia paused, taking a moment as her gears were turning. ”And what about the hidden bag of Rykes? Oh, don’t look at me like that. I mean why didn’t he bring it along with him? Was he in a rush or something?”

Later on, Levia would turn to Sister Joanne. “Actually before we leave, I was just wanted to make sure we’re on the right path. Which of the clues so far has suggested us to go looking into the caves?”

After introducing herself, the shaman looking woman named Cuinan refered to her with an inquiry, she entwined her hands together, and with a zealous tone she replied, "May your path be blessed Lady Cui'nan I follow a small but very devoted fellowship named the Keepers of the Grail. We aren't usually active in the worlds affairs, keeping more towards our traditional ways of life. However, something has been plaguing our people."

She seemed a bit unsettled and hesitated continuing but her eyes spoke with a degree of desperation but not enough for her tone to change, "We can only explain it as some sort of.. possession.. it's a most unsettling experience for the families of those afflicted. Unfortunately and quite frustratingly our council refuses to look into it and dismissed our concerns as isolated events related to common sicknesses." The nun glanced towards the caves, "This is why I have come to this place in search of some sort of solution, something I can potentially adapt towards our affinity of cleansing rites." She was obviously then holding back further details.

She stopped there, and looked at the others upon hearing cuinans suggestions, "Perhaps we could consider splitting up? I'm certainly following the path towards the caves." Looking towards Levia she affirmed, "It seems this place has a concentration of spiritual energy, perhaps we may also find out what truly was in that cart."

Crymaria's eyes glanced up as she felt Ciu'nan start to pet her. Is this what Comrade Boris feels like? I suppose I should ask him later. She thought to herself as she turned her attention back toward the group as they spoke. She brought her hand to her chin tried to piece some of the things together. She let out a small sigh as she let her arms drop to her side. "Ah, don't think about those Rykes little thief. There are still too many unknowns," She relented before walking toward Comrade Boris and started to pet the bear. Each of those ideas has merit and we are already at the caves I suppose checking them out wont be terrible. But I do feel we need to ask the barkeep as well and maybe try to catch the monk if possible. She thought to herself.

"Jai is a tradesman at heart having carving tools in the cart and the ones we found here are moot unless you can find a tool that you can say for certain was involved in the matter. But I suppose it can't hurt to check out the caves. However I think we should go talk to the barkeeper at this maybe he will know more about the wine that was brought in maybe he purchased some," Crymaria responded as she struck the palm of her hand with the bottom of her fist.

"But as to evidence well there is none that leads us to the cave on this matter the Nun on the other hand has her own reasons for checking out the cave," Crymaria pointed out as she looked around at the group. There was still much to do an so many questions that still needed answered and as of right now it did seem like they were only just starting to scratch the surface in her mind.

Once he had gotten a good feel for balancing and had his fill of it, Hathaway slowly lowered his leg as if he were landing from a flight. The priest took note of just how much respect Daichi was giving to this mysterious individual. He rubbed his chin in thought. Just what kind of person were they to have such a list of talents under their tutelage. Not only that, but they must be well-practiced in multiple skills to have garnered that attention.

The more he thought of that ominous figure, the more curious he became. While he wasn't a thrill seeker, he was someone that liked to let his curiosity drag him to where the fun was. So just like Daichi, Hathaway too became excited. As indicated by the grin on his face once he briskly walked behind his master. "This should be fun, I didn't know there was a monastery around these parts. There's a lot I need to learn of Kruhrin and it's ways. That could be a sign I need to stay here longer. It wouldn't hurt after all." He spoke his thoughts aloud casually.

Hathaway trekked alongside the path toward the the head monk that he didn't know existed until now. Thinking on his own religious status, he adjusted and out of place clothing on himself and knocked some sand out of his hair. It was incredibly important that one present himself well, especially before another who was deeply devoted to the spiritual. As any slight recklessness could be seen as disrespectful. "This head monk, you talked him up quite highly. What's his name, if I may ask? Well the real question should be how powerful is he?"

Daichi ran with Hathaway to catch up with the monk, who was surprisingly quick despite the casual appearance of his gait. As they rounded the corner of the terrace, he was already halfway to the town hall. Quickly catching up to him, Daichi called out to the bearkin, "Sifu Akim!"

The monk turned back in a slow, controlled manner when he was called. His face was expressionless upon seeing Daichi and Hathaway run up to him, but the eyes showed some interest in the pair.

"Young Daichi." Came the brief acknowledgment from the monk. Then he turned to look at Hathaway as his eyes scanned the human priest up and down. "And who is this human dressed like one my students?"

Daichi laughed nervously as he rubbed the back of his head. "Oh, that's my fault, Sifu. This is Hathaway, a visiting priest. He asked me to train him, but the only clothing he had were his priest robes. I didn't think it would matter lending him my old uniform."

Sifu Akim's face began to take on a disapproving expression. Extending an arm towards Daichi, he motioned for him to step back. The young bearkin obediently did so as Sifu Akim began to walk around Hathaway, observing him from all sides. The wind stirred his fur and whipped at his robes, but his walk remained slow and purposeful as he analyzed the "monk-in-training" before him. He stopped when he was standing in front of him once more.

"Tell me, then, Hathaway, what has my pupil taught you thus far?" said Sifu Akim, his eyes narrowing as he awaited a response.

Caves
Approaching the caves took no time at all--barely a stone's throw from the cart. A cliff face approximately three stories high rose up before them. Each story was terraced to provide a walkway in front of the caves. The caves along the ground level were all opened with no walls, doors, or other blockages to their entryways. The caves along the second story were partially closed off by a mixture of fencing or tarps to partially obscure the entrance. The third story caves were completely walled in with doors.

At a glance, the ground level caves seemed more populated. Some had feral bears coming and going from them or sleeping within. Others had various beastkin camping out in them. All of the caves were single chamber rooms.

To see in the upper two levels, one would need to climb up there via the ladders provided or the stairs hewn into the clifface.

Tavern
Ciu'nan would accompany those going to the tavern. With the wind at their backs as they walked down the slope of the main road to the plaza, they had to be careful not to be pushed over and go tumbling head over heels. With some luck, interested parties would find themselves at the tavern.

Stepping into the large establishment, you might involuntarily shiver as the pleasantly warm air within shows you just how cold you are. The afternoon crowd had assembled, and the place was jumping. The crowd that had been gathered around the fireplace that morning had now scattered as more bodies meant more heat, elevating the general temperature to a more comfortable threshold. The hunters were nowhere to be seen, but the catkin duo were playing a bright melody between Gray on his lute and White on his flute. The tavernkeeper was minding the counter as usual and a couple young bearkin could be seen assisting him, running drinks and food to various tables.

Levia listened intently at the side as Sister Joanne explained her situation to them. “Well Sister, I hope you will be able to find a solution to the problem here. And should you require any assistance, I’d be happy to lend a helping hand.” She smiled confidently at Sister Joanne, her usual playfulness was gone now. The past her would have just sighed and ignored Joanne, believing that those weaklings in the village ought to resolve their problems themselves. However, after her defeat the hands of a demon, she had resolved to change her ways. On top of that, there was the issue of her still recovering back her former powers, and right now she was barely capable of using strong magic at all. Oh well, hopefully there weren't any need for her to use her powers this time.

When they arrived shortly at the caves, Levia wondered about the structure of their housing. So the first floor was open to all and was like a public sleeping area, while the upper floors provided more privacy and security, something like that? How interesting… Although she couldn’t see herself sleeping out in the open with a bunch of strangers. They must really trust one another for them to do so. “Let us begin by asking around.” She said to those who had followed her to the caves, if there were any.

Walking up to a group of beastkins, she’d ask them a few questions. “Hello there, sorry to bother you but has there been any strange disturbances lately?” Following which, she would ask the question regarding the missing artist.“Oh and also, has anyone last seen the artist Karsh?”

Hathaway

Hathaway shared the same excitement that Daichi held in getting to meet this Master Monk known as Akim. Who knew what they could learn from him? Especially a greenhorn like himself. Without much to go on, but just a general idea of their identity, Hathaway figured that the old Monk was not only strong but wise. So there was more than just physicality that he could be taught.

However, himself and his aspirations came to a screaming halt once he was caught in Akim's sights. Hathaway held his breath at the noticeable unamused glare within the monk's eyes. He had anticipated something of this nature, afterall all religious orders had a certain amount of sanctity that they wanted to protect. He was used to dealing with the elders within the Church similarly.

Yet Hathaway was aware that there was another angle to this. The very fact that he was a human above all else, was what probably unsettled things the most. Still, in face of the Master Monk's gaze, the young priest tried to remain firm. "Master Akim, yes? It is an honor to meet you. My training under Master Daichi has only recently started but it has already been fruitful." He spoke with the pleasantry he had grown up with.

"As for what I learned. It has already been quite a bit. For instance-" as Hathaway explained, he very slowly lifted up his right knee. Leaving his left leg to center his balance. The youth recalled Daichi's words earlier, "The way of being both loose and tight at the same time. Allowing me to gain some grasp as balancing on a single leg, even against the wind." Hathaway declared boldly. He suspected that showing, rather than just telling, would prove himself in Akim's eyes.

"Not only that, but he has taught me his strength of character through both his earnestness and humbleness." Hathaway finished with a smile. "I hope to further my lessons under both his and your teachings. Of course, I will respect and honor your ways and aid you to the best of my capabilities." As he said this graciously, he planted both of his feet on the ground and bowed in the same manner he saw from Daichi earlier.

Crymaria, on her second judgment, thought the caves probably would be a dead end, so she decided to leave the two to their own business. She was hoping that the tavern would have some information they had missed the first time around. Though that in itself was a rather far stretch though this mystery or well, the potential mystery needed to be solved. There was still much to do. As they traveled back, Crymaria climbed on top of Boris and let the bear carry her back into town, seeing the condition of the roads.

When she walked through the door, the temperature change was instantly noticeable. Crymaria looked around the seeing as the people earlier were more spread out in the room. Looking toward the Catfolk for a moment, she folded her arms across her chest as she looked at Ciu'nan. "Well, at least the place has warmed up, Comrade Ciu'nan," She stated before walking further into the tavern and making her way toward the barkeep seeing as that was probably going to be her best source of information.

"Comrade Barkeep, you wouldn't happen to know where the hunters went do you? Also did Karsh ever come in here and sell a bottle of wine?" Crymaria inquired as she took a seat at the bar counter. She was curious as to what the barkeeper would have to say. If there was anything going on she figured he would have seen something about it going on.

As Hathaway answered Sifu Akim, the priest would notice the smallest softness beginning to settle in the bearkin's features. Upon Hathaway calling Daichi 'master', surprise took over Akim's features. A smirk undermined his serious expression as he glanced towards Daichi. Carefully observing Hathaway's demonstration of his newfound balance, the smallest nod of approval was made before Sifu Akim forced his face back into its former seriousness.

"It seems the human churches are good at teaching flattery. I most certainly did not think I would live to see the day a human called a beastkin 'master'. Giving young Daichi this title, however, well...you have my sympathies." said Sifu Akim before suddenly clearing his throat. "It is quite cool today. Why not join me in the town hall to warm yourself up? It will make the trip back to the monastery more enjoyable for us."

Daichi's breath caught in his throat. "Excuse me, Sifu, did you say 'us'?"

"Yes, 'Master' Daichi. I would not dream of missing the chance to see your teaching methods with my own eyes. In exchange, I might show you some of my own...if you think you are up for it."
A dangerous look flashed in the monk's eyes as the subtle challenge was spoken. Sifu Akim gestured to the door to the town hall. "Shall we?"

Levia approached a cave on the ground floor where two wolven were reclining against opposing sides of their cave facing one another. They each had cloth wrapped over their muzzles. Once Levia had announced herself, they both looked up eagerly.

"Are you here to finally do something about that awful stench? It'll soak into our fur at this rate!" said the female.
"Please get that frog to air out his chamber. He's right above us so all of the odor is just settling in front of our cave and being stirred by the wind." said the male.

Ciu'nan hugged herself and rubbed her arms with her hands to warm them up. She had apparently been a lot colder than she realized. Turning to Crymaria, she nodded. "Yes, I'm grateful for it too. I think I'll head up to my room and grab my cloak while we're here." The fae woman departed with brisk steps up the stairs to the second story where she disappeared down the hall to her room.

The barkeep watched Crymaria approach and offered her a smile. "Welcome back. Need a pint to warm you up?" Realizing Crymaria had instead come for information, he leaned an elbow on the bar and listened to her questions. "It's funny you should ask. The hunters went up to the town hall. Beni came by to collect them not too long ago. She said that I should send you and the fae woman there as well if I see you." The barkeep leaned in pointing his ear at Crymaria as though he had misheard her. "Karsh? Selling wine? No, but he was trying to buy me out of my best stock last night. I convinced him to settle for a single crate of our vintage from Houisil. I tried to get him to stay and share with...well, anyone, but he insisted on taking the crate back to his cart. Is he alright? Drinking alone is never the beginning of a good story."

Sister Joanne didn't expect much from anyone, but Levias words gave her a bit of comfort. "Thank you miss, I hope when I can." It was impossible to read beyond that, being an advocate if the meek and pious the weak and the poor made her increasingly more devoted to her cause.

When the nun arrived at the caves, she was following behind Levia, glancing and looking at the whereabouts of the devotees.

Overhearing what the wolf like creatures were saying she looked around for a bit. "Smell?" She asked, then when the wolves mentioned the frog, "Pray tell, what is the frogs name?" She asked and nodded before heading further up to meet the frog.

Levia had a feeling that the caves were probably a dead end to the Karsh case, as the wolven duo didn’t really address her question regarding it. Instead, the duo had requested them for help in running some errands for them. Levia wrinkled her nose as the stench hit her out of nowhere. She shot a glance at the nun with a look of disapproval on her face, however now that they have come this far, it was hard to back out of it.

“Why of course, we’d be happy to help.” Levia said with a forced grin on her face. If anything, this was a good chance to show off her good side and clear up the bad impression of her being a thief! Right after, Levia would follow along Sister Joanne to meet with the frog.

Crymaria leaned forward a bit as the barkeep started to tell her what he knew. When the barkeep mentioned Karsh buying the crate and taking it back, she let out a small sigh. Though the fact that she and Ciu'nan were called to the town hall. "That would seem to be the case; apparently, Karsh hasn't been seen for a while Comrade Barkeep. Did Comrade Beni happen to say what exactly she wanted us for?" Crymaria inquired as she looked back over her shoulder to see if Ciu'nan was back yet or not from getting her cloak.

So did Karsh drink one of the bottles along the way or is there more to this? Well there isn't much to go on at least not from what I've gotten so far. She thought to herself before letting out a sigh. "Say did Karsh have anyone one traveling with him? Or did he show up to the festival by himself?" She inquired thinking about the extra clothes that were found. So far no one had mentioned he had come with other people but maybe someone in the tavern would know more about it.

For the moment, it appeared that he had appeased Akim. Though from what Hathaway could convey from the senior's tone, there was still plenty of work to be done. At the very least they weren't on hostile terms. Time would tell just how Hathaway would have to deal with this grand master.

"Sorry, you see, I am under the faith of Elisiul. They are a god of peace. Therefore I'm rather quick to appease and soothe the souls of those around me. However, recently, I've noticed that it comes with some detriments.." Hathaway explained in order to give a better understanding of his situation. Still, it was apparent to him the oddity of a priest of peace seeking the desire for strength. Like before, he decided to swipe that thought under the rug and try to not think about it.

"A walk with you both sounds like a good idea. It'll give us the chance to get to know each other better." Hathaway lowered his foot and walked alongside the two bearkin. "So, Masters, may I ask how long have you both been acquainted with one another?" He hesitantly asked while approaching the town hall door.

Daichi seemed anxious at the thought of Sifu Akim scrutinizing his teaching methods. When Hathaway agreed to go with Akim, however, all he could do was fall in step beside them and hang his head. Akim engaged with Hathaway's discussion of the god he served.

"Gods of peace are funny beings. How do they expect peace to last if they forbid defending it by force? Does your Elisiul promote such a paradox?" Akim asked in earnest.

The town hall loomed up ahead of them. Presently, the front door opened and closed as Beni emerged in a bit of a rush. Closing the distance between them in no time at all, the rabbitkin saluted everyone but did not linger for conversation.

"Good day, Sifu Akim, Daichi, Priest Hathaway."

"Last name, Neighbor. First name, Bad. As good a name as he deserves, smothering us all like this!" snapped the she-wolven.
"Pardon my sister--even if what she says is true." said the he-wolven.

Taking the path down to the end of the row of caves, Joann and Levia find a staircase cut back and forth in the cliff face to reach the second and third terraces. Climbing to the second terrace, they travel back along the new set of caves to the one in question. While the cave interiors were obscured by their tarps, the "doorsteps" of the caves on this tier were noticeably cleaner, having a stone floor instead of dirt. There were also fewer signs of passage left by feral bears such as claw marks, droppings, and carcasses/bones of past meals. That said, occupied caves had other decorations, such as bottles of wine and clothing airing out on the line suspending the tarp.

For the duo investigating the caves, it wasn't hard to spot the frog's cave, even from a distance. A thick hide hung over the large entrance, billowing in and out as though the cave itself were breathing. From underneath the tarp, a sickly colored fog crawled along the ground before being caught by the wind and mingled with the transparent air.

As the pair approached, they would realize that the whiff they were getting from the ground below had been diluted somewhat by what stirring the wind provided. Now standing outside the cave, the pungent odor was enough to bring tears to the eyes. Somewhere in the weighty tones of the fetid aroma, one might pick out the slightest hint of a meat broth, or perhaps what had once been meat broth. The cook had apparently gone astray shortly thereafter by means of the herbs he added or more likely by adding in items no one would dream of putting in a broth, let alone ingesting.

If the nun and witch could collect themselves in the face of this olfactory onslaught, they would hear some low chanting, steady and rhythmic coming from behind the curtain. Shadows flickered on the ceiling and upper walls, suggesting a fire was going.

Tavern

Ciu'nan followed the familiar second story path over to the residential part of the tavern. Up here, only a few lanterns burned along the walls to provide light--their sparse use a necessary safety measure for primarily wooden structures. Thus the halls were largely in shadow, which was only darkened due to the overcast sky outside. A few people were dipping back into their rooms or else emerging as she passed by, most likely to join the commotion back in the main lobby. Her room was towards the end of the hall.

Producing her key, she quickly undid the door and entered. Not having much to begin with, finding her cloak was as simple as opening the door. There it was perched on the bedpost at the foot of her bed. Crossing the room, she snatched it up and threw it around her shoulders, snuggling into the warmth it provided. Her moment of bliss was cut short, however, as the door shut behind her.

Spinning on her heel, a knife was to her throat before she could act. Why had her [Danger Sense] not warned her? The ability to act would leave her as she stared into the face of her aggressor. Her eyes widened as, even in the shadows of her room, she knew this figure before her.

"A second meeting...how curious...." It was the familiar voice of the Pilgrim. "Tell me, girl, which are you?"

Ciu'nan's strength left her as the familiar fear brought on by this being overtook her. The memory of her skirmish with the mercenaries, even the very nature of her business here in Kruhrin, were swallowed by the abyss that threatened to swallow her here in this room.

"I-I don't know what you m-mean...." she stammered like a frightened little girl.

The Pilgrim's free hand rose to adjust the cloak now covering her, pulling it neatly together in the front and smoothing it here and there as necessary. Once the front was fixed to his liking, he began smoothing out her shoulders and giving the hood a toss. The hand then began tugging her hair up and out of the cloak so that it could free fall behind her.

"What I mean is"--the hand fixing her hair suddenly grasped a handful and wrenched her head backwards--"are you going to continue playing nice with these beasts or do what you came here to do? How long has it been now since you arrived? Nearly a fortnight already? And there's barely any blood been spilt at all!"

Ciu'nan gritted her teeth against the pain, but that seemed to have given her some of her nerve back. One eye clenched shut, while the other glared at the Pilgrim. Through clenched teeth she growled, "My spear's in the shop! I can't just walk up to the monastery anyway! The ceremony at the end of the feast is my best chance!"

There was silence as the eyes behind the mask stared back into hers. After a lingering moment, the hand clutching her hair released first as the pilgrim rose away from her, taking the blade away from her neck as well. Ciu'nan raised a hand to her neck and rubbed the back of her head, while the Pilgrim sheathed his blade.

"You've done your research at least. Though with how [Flaky] you are, it's hard to tell if you are serious. Just know that this town will fall one way or another--whether by your hand...or another kind of disaster." said the Pilgrim matter-of-factly as he turned and took a few steps towards the door. His hand touched the doorknob but paused as he spoke over his shoulder at her. "You were scared of me at the ruins as well. As soon as you saw me, in fact...Why do I have such an effect on you?"

Ciu'nan grabbed at the hem of her cloak and pulled it tighter around herself. She seemed to shrivel as she considered his question. "I...don't know...."

"Hm...a pity...."
With that, he left, his footsteps rapping on the floorboards as he went.

The tavern keeper slipped a biscuit over the counter to Boris in a not-so-subtle manner as Crymaria talked with him. The catkin finished their medley and were taking requests for the next diddy. One innebriated guest called for them to "play the saucy one about the three catkin in heat". Two bearkin promptly stood and forcefully escorted the intoxicated bloak from the premises.

"I imagine she needs you for the same reason she needed the hunters. If the council is calling for the hunters, there must be a pack of wild animals or something getting too close to town. With the Contest of Wisdom tomorrow, they probably want to ensure conditions are safe." While Crymaria was thinking of her next question, the tavern keeper stealthily drained the mug of a patron distracted by the removal of the drunkard. Setting the mug back down, he turned back to reply, "Karsh was--*hic*--oh, excuse me! I think Karsh arrived with others--assistants or some such--but I've only seen him by himself when he drops in."

Crymaria waited for quite a while. She would see a handful of people come and go from the upper level of the tavern, among them a masked individual who promptly left the establishment. Boris took notice of the individual and stood between him and Crymaria as the individual left. Ciu'nan did eventually emerge swaddled in her cloak and donning her skull headwear once more. She paused at the banister, looking out over the lobby below as though looking for someone. Her eyes met Crymaria's as she was scanning. Managing a weak smile, Ciu'nan came down to her.

"Sorry to keep you waiting. I, uh..." she fumbled for words as she tried to give a reason for her tardiness before finally managing to say, "What did the barkeep say?"

Upon arriving on the second floor, Levia would take her own sweet time admiring the other caves. She was still kinda reluctant in confronting some weird frog guy, and this was a good chance to take in the culture here. However, as much as she wanted to stall for time, eventually she would still arrive outside the stink zone. She gagged for a bit, covering her mouth with her hand. Just what in the world was going on in there?!

“Here goes nothing…” She took one last glance at Joanne, before going closer to the cave in particular. Suddenly, she’d stop in her tracks. “Wait, you hear that?” The low chanting was now audible. “What’s he doing in there, summoning a demon or something? What should we do?” She looked to Sister Joanne.

Crymaria shook her head as the barkeeper didn't seem to have that much information on the matter. But she did remember the hunters from earlier this morning mentioning there were creatures about. She turned her head to the patron, who was too drunk, and saw him just as he was escorted out. When she turned back to look at the barkeeper, he was secretly swapping out a patron's drink with something else, to which she cocked an eyebrow and simply shrugged her shoulders. As the drunk patron was talking about Karsh Crymaria turned her attention to them. "So Comrade, you haven't seen what these, any information might get you another drink," Crymaria stated as she winked at the Barkeep whom she knew wouldn't give them another drink at least not with Alcohol in it.

Turning around now Crymaria was wondering what was keeping Ciu'nan so long after all she had only gone to get her cloak. That didn't seem like a tasks that would take this long, letting out a sigh she watched as the people came and went. One that caught her eye was a masked individual that walked out and the fact that Boris reacted to that individual meant there was something more to it. Maybe I should mention the description of that person to the councilors, no doubt they will think that person is strange as well. Though what could they be doing in a place like this? She thought to herself as she brought her hand to her chin.

Looking around again her eyes caught Ciu'nan who was up on the higher floor over looking the tavern before she returned to the bar with her cloak and her skull. "Comrade Barkeep say that the wine we found was bought from here, but I did find out that it Karsh did come with others. Though apparently they haven't been seen with him in here at least. Though apparently we have been summoned to the town hall, it would seem that the hunters need our help or the village elders will be asking us for help Comrade. But there was a strange man with a mask that walked out Comrade Boris didn't like him. Which doesn't bode well but regardless I don't think we will learn much else here," Crymaria sighed as she stood up from the stool.

Upon opening the door to the town hall, he was pleasantly surprised to see Beni, the rabbitkin from yesterday. They had started off on a bad foot but they managed to come to terms. With a smile and a wave, Hathaway greeted her "Miss Beni! It's a pleasure seeing yo-" he tried to finish but for some reason she was in a hurry to go somewhere. Having a confused expression, he watched her back going further into the distance, "She must be busy with work. Hope it isn't too stressful for her,"

After listening to Akim's comment, Hathaway's eye shifted uncomfortably to the ground. He didn't want to discuss these 'contractions' but silence would only worsen his status before the master. "That's not necessarily the case. You see, it is our utmost duty to strive for peace as much as possible. Even if it seems impossible, the very act of trying in itself is important for both the sake of others and one's self." He gave a bit of his preaching to the bearkin as he walked along beside them. Getting a chance to speak of some of his teachings allowed him to relax a bit.

In contrast, the priest saw that Daichi was nervous. Trying to help take his mind off the stress Hathaway asked a question of his master, which also included Akim, "So what may I ask, are the philosophies that your group follows? I've learned what little I can, but I'd like to hear exactly what it is."

Hathaway took his time in answering Akim, which the monk quietly appreciated. Upon reaching the door, Hathaway chose to hold it open for the trio as they entered. Akim was beginning to wonder if he would receive an answer at all when the priest finally responded. He stopped and looked to Hathaway, his eyes never leaving the young man as he gave his answer. A sound escaped Akim as he contemplated Hathaway's words.

"So this Elisiul sees you as newborns, coaxing you to crawl and stumble towards this idea of peace if at all you might grasp it. If you do achieve it, then, like a newborn, this prize is easily wrenched from your hands. What are you supposed to do then? Stumble after it once more as if history won't repeat itself? Sounds like a cruel game employed by an evil parent for their own amusement." Akim spoke plainly. "You are a priest of Elisiul, so I can only imagine that at some point something of this god's message spoke to you. I would encourage you to see the reality of what your god expects of you though."

They had reached the lobby of the town hall. The upper floor to their right where Jia's room was situated was rather quiet. A lone bearkin, dressed in hunting attire, stood outside his door like a sentry. On the ground floor to the left of the monk trio, the door to Lady Bao's meeting room was opened. Mhu'ati was standing in the doorway seemingly talking to someone within. She turned and waved to Akim.

"She is ready for you, Sifu!" Mhu'ati said excitedly as she crossed the lobby towards them.

"Please, woman, just Akim is fine. 'Sifu' is what I'd expect my students to call me." he said amicably.

"It is such a fun word to say! How could I not use it whenever I see you?"

"Very well. If enjoy it that much, I won't deny you."
Then to Daichi and Hathaway. "I will return shortly."

Mhu'ati would approach them to take Akim's place. She smiled broadly at them. Daichi seemed to loosen up some now that Akim had departed for the moment.

"I am Mhu'ati. You are Daichi. But you I do not know." she said indicating Hathaway. "Please tell me what you are called, friend."

As Levia waited for Joanne's guidance, the chanting would stop. The faint clink of metal on metal could be heard beyond the tarp that covered the cave's entrance. A gratuitous slurping noise followed accompanied by a sound of contentment that resembled a frog's croak.

Tavern
Stepping into the large establishment, you might involuntarily shiver as the pleasantly warm air within shows you just how cold you are. The afternoon crowd had assembled, and the place was jumping. The crowd that had been gathered around the fireplace that morning had now scattered as more bodies meant more heat, elevating the general temperature to a more comfortable threshold. The tavernkeeper was minding the counter as usual and a couple young bearkin could be seen assisting him, running drinks and food to various tables.

After the commotion from the drunk being removed died down, the catkin announced that their next song would be their last, having earned a much deserved break. They chose a song they heard in the Republic. It was a slow tune that compelled you to close your eyes in order to fully experience it. The notes played on the flute were drawn out, while the lute provided a percussive element that accented certain moments. Everyone seemed lulled into silence and taken to a far away place as the duo escorted them with their music.

Ciu'nan half listened to Crymaria rattle off the information she had gathered. She sunk into a chair next to martial artist. It wasn't until Crymaria mentioned the summons that Ciu'nan's interest was piqued. She cradled the arm hanging in its sling as she replied, "Well, my arm isn't quite healed, but if they think I can help, I'll try. Maybe we should get going then." Ciu'nan turned to stand up but paused when Crymaria mentioned the mask man. The fae glanced back at her but quickly looked away. "A masked man? Sounds odd. I didn't see him." Quickly standing, Ciu'nan made her way to the door without waiting for further questions about the masked man.

Exiting the tavern, the pair would begin the climb back up the hill to the town hall. The smells of roasting meat congregated in pockets here and there where the winds could not whisk them away. Being downwind was about the only way to get a whiff out in the open. Smoke signals from the fires told the passersby where to look if they sought a meal. Overhead, strings of lanterns swayed in the wind.

Joanne, made her way through the cave, climbing up through the stair case, Levias glances would not go unnoticed as the nun attempted a smile with a hint of urgency and beckoning. Whatever ailed the nuns town was much more grim than the potential stench that awaited them.

Wandering though, a most hideous odor assaulted the nuns nostrils, "By.. the.. heavens." She muttered as her sleeve came up to somewhat keep the smell out of her nose. Yet it was to no avail, she'd groan and hold her stomach as her eyes got watery from unnoticed gag reflexes.

"Perhaps I should have listened to you, miss." The nun whispered as she appeared to heave a bit. Then nodded before going in. Suddenly, a chanting could be heard, she nodded at the witch and looked around some, but then, it stopped.

Joanne would walk through the animal hide tarp then, right after a familiar croaking sound could be heard. Surely, this was some sort of meditating frog and they'd likely interrupted, however, her eyes wouldn't see what was just beyond this veil just yet.

Following behind Joanne as she passed through the tarp, Levia wondered if it was rude of them to just barge into someone else’s room without saying anything. And boy did she have anything to say to the frog.

“Pardon the intrusion, but there had been complaints regarding the stench you’ve been causing. Have you considered hiring a cook or a chef? Because what you have there is not real food. From the smell alone, I can deduce that it’s some sort of poison.” Levia snapped at the froggie. She had little doubt that the frog would listen to what they had to say anyway, since they were unwelcomed guests that showed out of nowhere. In that case, she might as well go all out in hitting him with the facts!

Hathaway was a tad annoyed at Akim's leisurely way of criticizing his god and beliefs. A frown only escaped his lips. As he was well versed in hearing others' unpleasant opinions about his religion. He was practiced enough to not let a tempter get the better of him over something that small.

Truthfully, there was a time when he was very young that he had similar thoughts about this faith. It had been a struggle for his mother to get him to understand this belief system, but eventually he had gotten on the path.

Still, he had to silently admit that there was something about Akim's abrasiveness that rubbed him the wrong way. Hathaway swiped off some dust from his sleeve as if brushing off the comment. "The journey and lesson themselves are the rewards. Still, I thank you for the insight,...Sifu." he spoke amicably and bowed with respect at the back of the leaving Akim. After bowing, the priest raised his head and continued to stare at the master monk's back. He would have to find some way of winning over that one. "I think we handled that well." He commented with some sarcasm to Daichi on the side

Getting back to reality, Hathaway turned his attention to the newcomer, Mhu'ati. The young man returned the bearkin's smile in kind. Placing a hand on his chest, the priest introduced himself, "My name is Hathaway Peacecraft, a priest. I've come here under the training of Sifu Daichi." he tried his earnest to use their honorific properly.

"What about yourself? You seem well acquainted and casual with Sifu Akim. Let's like I need to learn some lessons from you as well."

Crymaria eyes Ciu'nan for a moment, trying to figure out if she was messing with her or not. "If you say so Comrade Ciu'nan I don't know how you missed him. He did tend to stand out," She concluded with a simple shrug of her shoulders, she tavern atmosphere had changed a bit now that the tune had settled down and hopefully most of the drunks were passed out in their seats or slumped on the floor. "But apparently were were summoned for some reason or another, so I suppose they think we can help," she stated starting to walk out of the tavern and signaling Boris to follow.

Now outside the tavern, Crymaria looked around and saw the lanterns strung overhead and the smell of food permeated the air. Walking along the path Crymaria stopped by the first fire that had some meat roasting taking some and thanking the group before moving on toward the townhall. I am curious as to what they think we can do with just the two of us? They did call for several hunters. She thought to herself as she took a bite of her food and continued onward.

Beni would eventually return with the hunters in tow. They would file up to a chamber adjacent to Jia's on the second floor. Sifu Akim would still be in conference with Lady Bao. Mhu'ati would bring Daichi and Hathaway to a sitting area there in the main hall. While they spoke, Ciu'nan, Crymaria and Boris would arrive. They would all sit for a moment, catching up as necessary/desired, before Beni would appear on the second floor balcony and beckon them up to the room where the hunters were gathered. Mhu'ati and Hathaway would be asked to join them as well. Daichi volunteered to hang back and inform Sifu Akim when he emerged.

Inside the upper room, a group of six hunters as well as Beni and the non-bearkin sat around a long table. Beni took lead in opening the discussion.

"Thank you all for coming. We've asked you four to sit in on this meeting as our hunting party is diminished in light of the business with Houisil. No one is forcing you to help, but we would greatly appreciate your assistance in the matter we are about to discuss.
"Now, the matter at hand. Earlier today scouts spotted a group of large frogs wandering the valley on the southern side of the meadow. They are far enough away that we are not seeing any present danger, but their proximity to the meadow, especially now during the feast, is something to be closely monitored. I'll turn it over to our captain of the hunters, Wei, for our plans going forward."

Beni sat down as a husky bearkin took her place.

"I'd like to also thank you all for coming. Given the unusual circumstances with most of our fighting capable citizens having left for Houisil, it is our decision to ask some of our guests for support in this matter. If you can help in scouting, combat, or healing, we would greatly appreciate your aid at this time. At the moment, we are regularly stationing a team of two bearkin near the area of the sighting. Thankfully, we don't have to be incredibly close to the creatures as their ribbiting is loud enough to be heard from quite a distance. It's necessary that we make visual confirmation now and again, however, to be sure of their exact location.
"As far as the frogs themselves, they are large, stout creatures with muscular hind legs capable of leaping great distances. Additionally, they have long, sticky tongues capable of pulling in grown deer whole. The tongue is cylindrical in shape with a bulb at the tip that produces a sticky substance for ensnaring prey. Their outer flesh is tough but not impenetrable. We suspect that their insides are particularly durable as well given that they aren't gutted when eating antlers and other sharp objects.
"We have an infamous story of a hunter long ago, who was on a cliff overlooking one of the creatures. Believing himself to be safe, he antagonized the creature by throwing stones. Once the creature had located him, it jumped up to his cliff to grab him. Reports say it was about 48 feet from floor to cliff. The beast miscalculated its jump and slid back down the cliff face to the ground below. The hunter began to run away. The frog performed a second jump and once its mouth cleared the cliff, its tongue lashed out quicker than a serpent's strike and caught the retreating bearkin, pulling him to his doom. Estimates from the survivors of that encounter say the tongue stretched 20 feet. It's not clear if that is the maximum limit or not.
"That's all we have for now. Any questions?"

Mhu'ati raised her hand.

"Would any of you like some mushroom soup? I brought some for Lady Bao. This sounds like tiring work, so you should all eat well to perform your best!" she smiled pleasantly.

Wei chuckled a bit. "I don't know about mushrooms, but food does sound nice. She makes a good point. I want everyone to eat a decent meal if you haven't already. Now is not the time to neglect ourselves. If we're not fit to fight, it's our family and neighbors that suffer for it."

Ciu'nan spoke up. "I'm not sure why you would even incorporate a cripple like me. I'd be a liability more than anything."

"Don't sell yourself short, Ciu'nan. You have eyes and ears. Scouting doesn't require anything more. Understand that we wouldn't ask this of any of you if we weren't in dire need."
Beni replied.

Upon entering the cave, Levia and Joanne would see a cauldron atop a fire in the back. The powerful stench of its contents swirled around them in a fog that crept along the floor. A counter was carved into the wall beside the fireplace, and on top of it were arrayed a number of empty jars. A few dead rodents were laid out on the counter as well. The chamber was minimally decorated with totems made of bones.

Standing in front of the cauldron was a lean figure decorated in scaled leather. The anuran (frogkin) remained facing the cauldron as it ladles some of the concoction into the empty jars. The full jars were then transferred from the counter into a sack. Upon finishing this task, it turns to them holding a jar in its hand, bulging eyes permanently expressing surprise. The anuran replied, "Frogs don't complain about my cooking. Try some--I insist!"

The anuran chucked the jar at the feet of the two women, splattering its contents as a plume of smoke erupts upward carrying a fresh dose of the broth's stench. In the commotion, the anuran makes to escape with his sack of jars.

Levia held a hand over her nose as the stink swirled around them. It took all she had just to suppress the urge to puke. They’d better finish things here quick, otherwise she wouldn’t know if she’d be able to make it out of this toxic wasteland alive!

All of a sudden, the rascal of a frog tossed the jar of sludge at their feet. Levia leapt back instinctively, but couldn’t help it as her lower half got splattered by the gunk. Her eyes widened in horror. No way… Now the stench was stuck on her beautiful clothes! She felt lightheaded all of a sudden. “Oh, great! How wonderful of you! Just shower me in all that gunk why don’t you?”

Seeing the rascal attempt to flee right after what it had done, she’d yell, “where do you think you’re going?!” Immediately after, she’d give chase right behind it. He was gonna pay!!!
