How much experience in actual magic should Merlin have at the beginning? Rate it based on the chart below. If you want to leave it in my hands, I guess I'd go for 4.
Green: Good places for a start in my opinion.
Orange: Merlin will be a bit too strong/weak compared to other characters, but we can use this as a starting point too.
Red: We definitely shouldn't touch these levels of power.
Black: I wouldn't start here if I were you, but then again, it is up to you.
1 - Barely knows the orthodox basics and is unlikely to apply them in combat.
2 - Can pull off minor feats of telekinesis and telepathy when focused. Access to elementary spells.
3 - Can reliably use telekinesis and telepathy with minimal concentration, but the strength is lackluster. Access to basic spells.
4 - Can use telekinesis and telepathy at will, the strength is moderate. Access to a full branch of basic orthodox magic and some knowledge in other fields. Can reliably fight with magic alone, brew potions, and make magical swords given time. At this level, Merlin has visions and prophetic dreams, and all that kind of stuff you probably read about.
5 - Skilled in the use of telekinesis and telepathy and they may have combat applications. Intermediate magical knowledge in several fields. At this level, Merlin obtains his infamous shapeshifting skills although they are still unrefined and lackluster.
6 - Has a spell that might be useful for every major situation and encounter stored somewhere in his brain. Moderate knowledge in numerous fields. Shapeshifting becomes precise.
7 - Very skilled in the use of magic. Telekinesis and telepathy are enough to disable small groups of soldiers with minimal effort. Advanced knowledge in all fields of magecraft with exceptional hold over one of them.
8 - This reaches bullshit levels. Can create potions of longevity, or create powerful artifacts in the span of a week or several days. Access to powerful spells; stuff like summoning dragons at will, or creating an infinite hallway.
9 - This breaks through the bullshit barrier. As above, but can do so in less than a day, perhaps taking a few hours. Can incinerate small armies with storms of magical energy.
10 - Practically a living God that can pull off anything on the fly.
I'd say 3 or 4 would be good, but it's your roleplay . Also, a character sheet would be useful.
Don't worry. I am a firm believer in 'Power Needs Depth' and I am known for my in-depth character sheets.I will get on a character sheet right away when I am home from being out and about. Also, I think green, maybe slowly changing into orange is good? and 3 & 4 sound good to me.
I want to make it clear that I want to give you all the most freedom with your characters, inside of a certain limit. That limit is judged by these three things:
1) your characters power level being way to strong.
3) Your character has no depth. By this, I mean there is no drive in your character. A thing that helps me with characters is I think of them as real people and if I could have a conversation with them what would they say.
3) Your characters backstory is too elusive. This means there is not enough in their past. It's fine to have mystery in your character, but I've seen people who are like 'yeah their bio is unknown'... Like bye. They came from somewhere and it shouldn't be unknown.
I am a sucker for details, so once the character sheet is up please keep those three things in mind.
Yes! I would love to use your source. (:Hey, do you wanna have my source? I use this awesome podcast. Ill link it to you.
I like that. There are a lot of people out there who just don't understand. I also, wanted to ask you a little more about Mordred. I understand that he is Arthur's son, or... And if he is Arthurs son, perhaps our story could start when Arthur just achieves the title of king, and has dedicated his quest to the holy grail. (In my original idea, he was just a prince, without Excalibur keep in mind.)Don't worry. I am a firm believer in 'Power Needs Depth' and I am known for my in-depth character sheets.
If a character's power isn't there for any other reason to establish the character as powerful, it adds little depth save for when the character is a villain and the heroes need a strong opponent. I will also include Merlin's full backstory, so no worries.
The whole thing with Mordred is that he is both a bastard and an incestuous child. He's a secret villain. Mordred was born out of one night that Arthur and Morgana spent together after she cast a spell on Arthur. Creating Mordred was a part of her plan to kill Arthur, and it played out exactly as she expected in the end. She basically played chess for several years and raised Mordred by herself, then when he was old enough she sent him to Camelot with a recommendation to Arthur (who had no idea Mordred is his son, or that he has a son with Morgana since it all came from a spell,) and thus, Mordred was quick to be accepted as a Knight of the Round Table. Cue several years of infiltration and mystery behind Mordred's true identity and Arthur has to set out somewhere else, in different versions of the story he either hunts Lancelot for having a relationship with Guinevere or he sets out to find the Grail, or on a crusade, or to conquer France, or to re-conquer Rome, or many other things. When Arthur is outside Camelot, Mordred steals the Clarent from the armory and crowns himself the new king. When Arthur returns, a civil war breaks out and you know the rest of the story. Both Mordred and Arthur die. Yeouch.I like that. There are a lot of people out there who just don't understand. I also, wanted to ask you a little more about Mordred. I want to point out Mordred's most common title is: "Knight of Treachery," and for good reason, as you can read above.
Also, Arthur obtains Excalibur much later. He achieved the title of King when he pulled out the sword in the stone created by Merlin, often called Caliburn. Excalibur comes from the Lady of the Lake and acts as a symbol of Arthur's virtue.
To be honest, there is no reason you'd have to trust me. There are hundreds if not thousands of different versions of the Arthurian Legend, each one differing slightly from each other and only having a few consistent details. Some describe Arthur as a greedy tyrant king, whilst most of them (especially early ones) describe him as a virtuous, pious man willing to give his life away for God and country.Huh. Mordred seems to play an important part in the scheme of it all. I like the villainy. So, do you think Mordred would be a good character to have in the beginning as a knight then, or should he be introduced later on, after we establish who will play Morgana, because she is on the list of characters I would want. To be fully honest I might play Morgana myself, but I am not sure.
Hm, interesting. I thought Caliburn was Excalibur. However, I trust your word for it. So, that all being said, where should this story begin? I want to start having a solid plot to follow, and I think I've overloaded my brain on Arthurian legends.
Totally off topic, and interesting poem I found from a poet is The Lady Shallot. I enjoy.
Nice. Thank you, your information is helping paint a picture in my mind. :3To be honest, there is no reason you'd have to trust me. Trust me when I say you can be totally free to re-invent things with the legend as you see fit. It's practically a part of its tradition at this point.

If anyone has questions, or things they would like to add, don't be scared to ask. :3
You don't have to use the coding. You can just copy paste without the codes?I'm sorry if there's one thing I don't do it's coding
There is not much going on, just discussion on the legends of King Arthur. . IF you see the first post, there is a list of characters.Hmmmm. Well, I have no idea what's going on.
BUT STILL I SHALL TRY.
What roles are left _WastedYouth ?
I am thinking not, should stick to humans for now.An OC, you say?
Hmm, since magic is allowed, do you allow any magical beings as part of the crew?
Not yet. I am about to head out the door.Is there a csthread?
Everyone should use the same one, so you can use the uncoded one. :3So do I use the Coded, or the uncoded cs sheet?
This is wrong! In the French Vulgate it states that his half sister Queen Morgoss (Morgana's sister and Gawain's mother) is Mordred's mother! Also, Arthur willingly slept with her, but did not find out that they were related until Arthur learned of his true parents around ten years later. Until then, he was known as a lowborn. The whole thing with Mordred is that he is both a bastard and an incestuous child. He's a secret villain.
