I get the feeling it's intended to lean on the "bittersweet melancholic story of how the Dao family rose to power but Was it Reality Worth Everything We Lost Along the Way?" sort of deal, but I just wanted to be sure since I also don't want to go too hard on the gloom and the doom and the anguished tears.

For BoD, it's a little bit of everything. So yes, that is one of the few aims for it. Most of the time, we will try to maintain an authentic court experience without sacrificing or neglecting too much lighthearted moments. Anything can be done, tbh. It all depends on how y'all intend to veer your chars towards the end.
