Name: Damian Leeds

Age: 40

Species or Cryptid Type: Jersey Devil

Species Info: Wikipedia Link

Birthplace: Leeds Point, New Jersey

Side in the Revolution: Loyalist

Capable of Human Speech?: Yes

Primary Language(s): English, Latin

Secondary Language(s): Dutch, Munsee

Affiliation(s): The British Crown, the Hidden Order of the Third Eye

Appearance: Mostly appearing as a cross between a human and a goat that stands 6’2’’, Damian is coated in black hair all across his body. His head appears like that of a goat, with exceptionally sharp horns, long ears, and a wicked forked tongue. Unlike a goat, Damian has a long tail and massive black wings, similar to that of a bat. Each of Damian’s fingers end in claws, while instead of feet Damian has hooves. Damian has long since foregone modesty, not wearing any clothing, his hair covering up any parts that may be viewed as risqué.

History: Born one of the Leeds family, the most famous family in Leeds Point, New Jersey, Damian would be born a normal child. The thirteenth child of Deborah Leeds, known as Mother Leeds, the head of a witches’ coven, Damian would be a surprise child as Mother Leeds was already in her sixties when she had him. With no known father, as all of Mother Leeds former husbands had since died, there were rumors that Mother Leeds had interacted with a demon, the Devil himself being a potential father.

For the first day of his life, Damian was a perfectly normal baby, pale with a small tuft of red hair. However at the stroke of midnight, Damian’s form would shift into that of a goat-human hybrid, with massive black wings. This demonic shape-shifting would be the last straw for the people of Leeds Point, a mob forming to go after the witch and her son. Burning down the Leeds household, the mob would also kill several members of the Leeds family. However Mother Leeds and Damian would escape, taking refuge in the Pine Barrens.

Raised in the wilderness, Damian would initially appear like a primitive animal, not seeming to learn anything. But eventually after a few years, Damian would learn to speak, quickly becoming fluent in English. Mother Leeds would occasionally leave Damian in the woods to go get supplies. It would be during one of these times that Damian would encounter some of the indigenous Delaware people. These people would not be scared of Damian, instead seeing him as some kind of spirit. Damian would interact with the Delaware enough that he would learn some of the Munsee language.

Eventually Damian would start growing into an adult, all the while his mother’s health would worsen with age. By the time he was twenty, Damian would have to bury his mother, her advanced age catching up with her. Now alone in the world, Damian would briefly live with the Delaware people. That was until some white traders came to deal with him, viewing him as a demon, the traders would attack the Delaware for dealing with Damian.

Damian would fly into a frenzy killing the white people. When all was said and done, the village was ruined. Still enraged, Damian would head for the nearest white village, murder in his mind. However as soon as he entered the town, Damian would be captured. Locked in a jail cell, Damian was aware that the townsfolk planned to kill him publicly in the morning. However, Damian would be visited in his cell by a wizard named Geoffrey. The wizard would then offer Damian a way out, breaking him out of his cell.

Convinced to go with Geoffrey rather than kill the townsfolk, Damian would find himself on a boat headed for England. Once arriving in Europe, Damian would be offered a place in the Hidden Order of the Third Eye, a group made up of wizards and magical creatures that wished to serve the British Empire. Once admitted, Damian would meet the leader of the Order, the legendary oculist John Dee.

Once a scientist and sorcerer serving the British crown, John Dee had died in poverty, only to be resurrected soon after as a lich, forming the Order after that. It would be that John Dee that confirmed Damian’s demonic heritage, Damian realizing that he possessed certain powers. Damian would learn that his wings were actually capable of flight, and that he could breath blue flames, the flames of the underworld.

It would be while working with the Order that Damian would come to trust in the British Empire, viewing it as a necessary thing to maintain justice and order around the world. King George III would even become aware of Damian, content with Damian’s swear of fealty to the British crown. Damian felt that he was finally living his best life.

Damian had considered remaining in England for the rest of his life, happy just being a member of the Order. That was until King George decided to send some of his magical agents back to the New World, as there was rumors of growing unrest among the magical population. This included Damian, who begrudgingly went back to the land of his birth.

Arriving back in New Jersey, Damian would be named head of the local chapter of the Hidden Order of the Third Eye. While hidden from the public at large, Damian would govern over the local magical community. However, despite Damian’s efforts to maintain control, rebellion would break out in the New World colonies.

While not initially involved in this new war, the Order would send Damian to Massachusetts, where they believed a battle was about to start. While the British forces initially wanted to keep Damian a secret, they have realized that he could be useful in battle, slowly revealing his existence to the higher ranked officers of the British Empire stationed in the New World.

Other Notes: Damian is a one of a kind cryptid, the result of a union between a powerful witch and a demon. His wings aren’t for show, as he is capable of flight, and can breath blue flames. Damian is well versed in the occult, learning Latin so that he may read the ancient texts. Besides his affiliation with the Hidden Order of the Third Eye, Damian’s true loyalty lies with the British crown.

Name: Alexandre Gagnon

Age: 32

Race/Ethnicity: Caucasian

Nationality: Acadian

Side in the Revolution: Patriot

Occupation(s): Teacher/Librarian/Soldier

Primary Language(s): English, French

Secondary Language(s): Latin, Arabic, Greek

Wizard?: Yes

Gift: Alexandre is a scrivener, though he didn’t know it until he was older. Thanks to some wizardly blood tracing back to France, Alexandre has an innate knowledge of magical symbols, glyphs, and other iconography. By drawing these symbols, Alexandre can draw on ancient magics, doing things like granting blessings, creating wards, or otherwise generating things out of nothing like a glowing ball of light. Alexandre has learned some symbols of different civilizations, giving him access to a wide variety of spells. While Alexandre is well taught, he is nowhere near the strongest scrivener.

Affiliation(s): 1st Canadian Regiment, Hidden Library of Montreal

Appearance: Alexandre is Acadian, descendants of the French living in the New World. Like most of his people, Alexandre has pale skin and dark brown hair. His face is traditionally handsome, with pale blue eyes and a trimmed beard and short hair. He is of average height, standing at 5’7’’, with a pretty athletic build. Alexandre’s clothing is nothing special, just what the middle class people of the period would wear. However lately he has worn the uniform of the 1st Canadian Regiment, a brown and white attire.

History: Born in New Brunswick, Alexandre was Acadian, descendants of the French who settled in the New World. The grandson of a French lord who settled in the region, Alexandre would grow up upper class. Being privileged in one of the more built up towns, Alexandre would not want for anything, and would receive a great education.

As part of this education, Alexandre would be introduced to the wizardly arts, the Gagnon family having included several wizards. While Alexandre would greatly enjoy and excel in his studies, though he would show no magical talent. When Alexandre was a young teenager, he became the head of the Gagnon family when his father passed away from blood poisoning caused by a cut.

Overwhelmed by this newfound responsibility, Alexandre would have immediate problems with running the family. Within a few years, Alexandre would lose most of the family fortune, making bad investments and other unwise monetary practices. By age sixteen, Alexandre had almost ruined the family name. Not able to deal with this anymore, Alexandre would leave New Brunswick, heading west.

Eventually ending up in Quebec, Alexandre would find employment as a school teacher. Alexandre would spend the next few years tutoring the children of the upper class, teaching the same lessons once taught to him. Eventually one of the upper class parents would become interested in the wizardly arts, Alexandre agreeing to teach what he knew. However this renewed interest in the occult would get Alexandre curious.

Investing a good chunk of his finances into acquiring new books about wizards and magic, Alexandre would fall down the rabbit hole of learning the occult. It would be while studying this topic that Alexandre would discover that he did indeed have some magical talents. Learning that he was a scrivener, Alexandre looked back and realized that the doodling of his childhood was him unconsciously creating magic symbols.

Deciding to go with his newfound magical abilities, Alexandre would leave the countryside to head for the big city where wizards gathered. Alexandre would find himself in the massive city of Montreal, one of the most populous places in the New World. Initially still working as a teacher, Alexandre would eventually encounter fellow wizards. Alexandre would quickly become part of the magical community of Montreal, his magical abilities growing gradually.

It would be the next few years of living in Montreal that Alexandre would become aware of the Quebec separatist movement. This group would wish to obtain independence from the British who had taken Quebec from the French several years prior. Seeing himself as neither British, nor truly French, Alexandre would associate with these beliefs, becoming an outspoken member of the movement.

Eventually this secessionist talk would start to impact Alexandre’s job opportunities, most of the upper class not wanting their kids to learn from a radical. Without steady employment, Alexandre would have to rely on his fellow wizards for help. Eventually Alexandre would find work assisting in the hidden library of Montreal, a secret repository of wizardly knowledge.

Around this same time, the first rumblings of revolution were happening in the more southern colonies. While initially getting the impulse to head south to help his fellow secessionists, a cooler head took over Alexandre, as he remained in Montreal, focusing on independence for Quebec.

However, war would actually break out south of Quebec, the British army engaging a newly raised American army. Alexandre would pay attention to this with key interest, as the war grew ever closer. Eventually the patriot army would push northward, forcing the British army into Quebec. British commander Guy Carleton would fortify Fort Saint-Jean to prevent the Americans from pushing into Montreal.

Alexandre would see this as the perfect time to start fighting, a merchant named James Livingston raising a militia out of volunteers. Known as the 1st Canadian Regiment, they would assist the American army in the battles in Quebec. Alexandre would quickly make a name for himself, proving to be a competent soldier.

Soon James Livingston himself would approach Alexandre, deciding to make him his ambassador to the American forces. Sent south, Alexandre would meet up with the American patriot forces in Massachusetts, where he is to be Livingston’s eyes and ears as the war progressed.

Other Notes: While Alexandre left his family many years ago, he does still wonder about them. Alexandre can also learn things very fast and retain them easily, but despite that his magical prowess is average at best. Alexandre is also both an anglophone and francophone, and has learned a little of several other languages so that he may read those texts. The face claim for Alexandre is Nicolas Simoes.
